Abstract While classically used to visualise the magnetic microstructure of functional materials (e.g., for magnetic applications), in this study, the Bitter technique was applied for the first time to visualise macroscopic deformation gradients in a polycrystalline low-carbon steel. Spherical indentation was chosen to produce a multiaxial elastic–plastic deformation state. After removing the residual imprint, the Bitter technique was applied, and macroscopic contrast differences were captured in optical microscopy. To verify this novel characterisation technique, characteristic “hemispherical” deformation zones evolving during indentation were identified using an analytical model from the field of contact mechanics. In addition, near-surface residual stresses were determined experimentally using synchrotron radiation diffraction. It is established that the magnetic domain distribution contrast provides deformation-related information: regions of different domain wall densities correspond to different “hemispherical” deformation zones (i.e., to hydrostatic core, plastic zone and elastic zone, respectively). Moreover, the transitions between these three zones correlate with characteristic features of the residual stress profiles (sign changes in the radial and local extrema in the hoop stress). These results indicate the potential of magnetic domain distribution imaging: visualising macroscopic deformation gradients in fine-grained ferromagnetic material with a significantly improved spatial resolution as compared to integral, mean value-based measurement methods.
The local structure around Ni and La atoms in Al85Ni10La5 amorphous powder after ball milling was investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. A continuous decrease in coordination number of Ni and La as a function of milling time was observed, while the nearest neighbour distance and the mean square atomic displacement did not change, pointing at the creation of free volume around the Ni and La atoms. These structural changes resemble those of a liquid upon temperature increase. The results are described by a shear band model in which the coordination numbers of Ni and La are different within and outside a shear band.
All melting range alloys are subject to the risk of material-, design- and welding process-specific hot cracking during liquid to solid phase transition. The present study was focused specifically on the influence of additional external loads, e.g. resulting from component welding fabrication, on weld pool near displacements and on the associated structural hot cracking behaviour. Respective experimental investigations were conducted using the controlled tensile weldability test enabling defined additional tensile load imposition during welding. Depending on external loading, the local weld pool near transverse displacements dy and transverse displacement rates dy/dt were determined in situ during welding with the help of the digital image correlation technique. The measurements allowed time and spatially resolved identification of hot crack critical transverse displacements and displacement rates.
In this study, the influence of production-related gaps on the shear tension strength and fatigue performance was investigated for resistance spot welded TRIP steel HCT690. Furthermore, the local strain distribution in shear tension test was calculated by the digital image correlation technique (DIC). The static shear tension strength was found to be almost independent of gaps up to 3 mm. The maximum local strain in the spot weld region however decreases depending on which sample side (deformed or undeformed) is considered. In addition, it has been ascertained that gaps of 3 mm lead to a significant drop in fatigue life compared to gap-free shear tension samples. This fact could be attributed to decreased stiffness, higher transverse vibration and higher rotation (θ) between the sheets as well as increased local stress calculated by 2 dimensional FE simulation.
The thickness measurement of transparent layers with optical techniques is very problematic. The observed deviations can easily reach 100% of the layer thickness to be measured. In order to analyse these deviations, tactile reference measurements have been developed. The proposed method is based on contact mode measurements with low contact pressure. With stylus instruments, this can be realized either by using the recommended tip radius of 2 µm and very small probing forces in the micronewton range (and low scanning speeds of 50 µm s-1) or by using the recommended probing force of 750 µN, but a large probing tip radius. Three metal layers on silicon or silicon dioxide and two polymer resist materials on a thin chromium adhesive layer on silicon are used as artefacts. The comparison of the optical measurements with the tactile reference values disclosed deviations of the optical measurements of up to 195% of the layer thickness. Layer thicknesses were between 200 nm and 4 µm. This paper analyses the deviations of two white light interference microscopes, one phase shift interference microscope, one confocal microscope, one autofocus sensor, a chromatic sensor, an interferometric film thickness sensor and one spectroscopic ellipsometer. Simple and well-known expressions for the description of the observed deviations are presented and discussed. The order of magnitude of the observed deviations can be described well by these correction formulas but further investigations are necessary in order to better understand the systematic deviations of optical surface measuring instruments on non-cooperating surfaces.
