Global energy consumption will increase in the future necessitating both fossil fuels and renewable energy choices - especially wind energy. Such high energy demand requires installation of offshore energy structures, rigs, platforms and towers, which are susceptible to adverse environmental conditions along with maintenances. Due to their large size and remote locations, cylindrical grouted joints are often adopted between substructure and foundation in these offshore platforms and wind structures such as monopiles. However, these connections are composite structures with exterior sleeve, interior pile and infill mortar. Degradation and settlements were reported inside similar connections, which were installed in last three decades. Besides, grouting in the offshore sites were proven difficult to obtain ideal load bearing capacity. In-situ loading conditions were also found to be affecting the failure mechanism inside such connections. This study aims at characterizing the nature of cracks generated in these grouted connections under both static and cyclic loading. Scaled grouted joints were manufactured using a novel reusable mold, and connections were loaded to failure to visualize the main failure patterns. An assessment between failure under these two types of load is drawn along with comparison to previously available literature.

During the past 20 years, innovative developments in concrete technology have enabled the production of ultra-high performance fibre reinforced concretes (UHPFC) for the protection and preservation of concrete structures. The main characteristics of UHPFC comprise high compressive and flexural strength as well as high ductility compared to normal strength, normal weight concrete (NSC). This paper focuses on the analysis of crack formation and crack propagation in UHPFC under tensile loading under quasistatic conditions by using acoustic emission (AE) and optical deformation analysis (ODA).
AE is a non-destructive technique to monitor the development of micro structural damage processes caused by external forces. In this context, AE allows for a continuous monitoring of changes in the microstructure (cracks) over time and the corresponding localisation by appropriate algorithms. The AE measurements were performed along with ODA at the surface of the samples in order to analyse the deformation behaviour of the samples and the crack propagation.
For the tests, a UHPFC reference mixture was developed and tested with three different volume percentages of steel fibres (1.0 V.-%, 2.0 V.-%, and 3.0 V.-%). This paper shows that the application of AE is a suitable method to analyse the crack propagation in UHPFC specimens under tensile loading and to localise the crack initiation. Furthermore, insights into the failure mechanism of the fibres are offered by the analysis of the signals of the AE measurements, which allows for a better understanding of UHPFC and its general performance.

The increased utilisation of higher-strength steels and filler materials necessitates more profound understanding of the connections between the welding process, the heat input, the cooling conditions and the resulting metallurgical processes in the weld and its surroundings. Strategies which help to improve the strength properties and service lives of welded structures to such an extent that the utilisation of higher-strength materials can be justified and their lightweight construction potential can thus be exploited to the full can only be derived from the interaction between all the influencing factors. Examples of a few investigations on welded joints between higher- strength fine-grained structural steels with regard to the interactions between the main variables influencing the cold cracking are presented in this article.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the case of high-strength austenitic steels, welding-induced cracks may arise during resistance spot welding in the rough conditions of body shell fabrication. The influence of such cracks on the dynamic strength is not sufficiently well-known at present. Within the framework of this paper, welding cracks in various positions and with various formations were therefore investigated with regard to their effect on the strength and fracture behaviour of resistance-spot-welded joints subjected to high-speed shear tension. In this respect, the analysis of the force/displacement courses, the tensile shear strength and the energy absorption capacity served to prove that surface cracks in the interfacial region and in the peripheral region of the electrode indentation do not have any negative influence on the dynamic strength for the tested circumstances.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Neither the latest standardisation with regard to microscopic investigations on welded joints nor the permissibility of microcracks and their definition are unambiguous. According to the representation of currently applicable standards in the fields of the assessment of welds, the qualification of welding processes and the execution of welded joints, the problems associated with microcracks are discussed on the basis of the latest welding tests on high-strength quenched-and-tempered fine-grained structural steels. Not only outstanding points and questions but also improvement possibilities are indicated and opened for discussion. Finally, attention is drawn to the clarification of the influence of microcracks on the mechanical- technological material parameters of the welded joint subjected to both static and cyclic stresses.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thick-walled pipes made of steel are the basis of a large number of components in mechanical and installation engineering, e.g. for hydraulic components, in power station technology or in the petroleum industry. Particularly when strict positional and shape tolerances are demanded, the classical manufacturing process is chip-producing machining from the solid material. However, this is time-intensive and material- intensive. The laser/GMA hybrid processes with modern high-power lasers are a suitable alternative. With these processes, it is currently possible to weld components with a wall thickness up to approx. 15 mm with little distortion in one pass. However, in initial experiments, solidification cracks with longitudinal and vertical orientations in relation to the welding direction, so-called central rib defects, were established in welds on pipes. Within the framework of a research project, it was possible to determine the cause of the cracking and to find measures in order to avoid it. The technical boundary conditions could be complied with in this respect. The article gives an overview of the research project and the essential results.
Rocks are commonly very heterogeneous materials. Randomly distributed micro-flaws inside the rock are believed to initiate tensile cracks from which shear fractures develop and coalescence through en echelon interactions leads to fracture. In this paper, we describe the results of applying high-resolution X-ray tomography to samples of greywacke and limestone experimentally deformed under unconfined axial shortening at various loads equivalent to different fractions of the sample strength. Mineral grains, pores, micro-cracks and other voids were imaged with a resolution of 10 µm. 3D image analysis enabled us to monitor the initial state of the samples and the changes in them due to compression. Crack morphology is characterized and compared to the micro-structure of the sample before and after deformation. In the greywacke, formation of a macro-crack ~10° oblique to the stress direction is observed. It initiated in fine intergranular material at the top tip of the sample and is composed of tensile fractures connected by wing cracks. None of the voids defined in the initial state fractured, and the crack is interpreted to have started either as a micro-crack which was smaller than the resolution of the tomography, or, as a completely new crack. In the limestone, cracks are observed to initiate in features that are too small to be imaged by the tomography, or also in newly created cracks.
