Preparation of graphene oxide by cyanuric chloride as an effective and non-corrosive oxidizing agent
(2016)
In this work, we report a new method for the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) using cyanuric chloride as a non-corrosive oxidizing agent.
The mild conditions, simple purification, and scalability of this method are significant advantages over common approaches in which harsh oxidizing agents are used. Moreover, a major drawback with the Hummers' method, the production of toxic gases, is not an issue with this process. This method is a safe and large-scale alternative for the production of GO under mild conditions.
The maximum magnetisation (saturation magnetisation) obtainable for iron oxide nanoparticles can be increased by doping the nanocrystals with non-magnetic elements such as zinc. Herein, we closely study how only slightly different synthesis approaches towards such doped nanoparticles strongly influence the resulting sub-nano/atomic structure. We compare two co-precipitation approaches, where we only vary the base (NaOH versus NH3), and a thermal decomposition route. These methods are the most commonly applied ones for synthesising doped iron oxide nanoparticles. The measurable magnetisation change upon zinc doping is about the same for all systems. However, the sub-nano structure, which we studied with Mössbauer and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy, differs tremendously. We found evidence that a much more complex picture has to be drawn regarding what happens upon Zn doping compared to what textbooks tell us about the mechanism. Our work demonstrates that it is crucial to study the obtained structures very precisely when “playing” with the atomic order in iron oxide nanocrystals.
Synthesis of Molybdenum and Niobium Mono- and Binary Silicides by the Method of SHS-Metallurgy
(2016)
The process of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of the Mo–Nb–Si silicides from the powder mixtures has been investigated. Based on performed experiments, the composition of powder mixtures as well as technological parameters are proposed which provide the synthesis of monosilicides MoSi₂, NbSi₂, and binary silicides Mo₁-хNbxSi₂ with different ratios of Nb/Mo by adding different contents of MoO₃ and Nb₂O₅. Microstructure and phase compositions of the obtained silicide ingots are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, X-ray diffraction, and backscatter electron diffraction.
Polysarcosine (M-n = 3650-20 000 g mol(-1), D similar to 1.1) was synthesized from the air and moisture stable N-phenoxycarbonyl-N-methylglycine. Polymerization was achieved by in situ transformation of the urethane precursor into the corresponding N-methylglycine-N-carboxyanhydride, when in the presence of a non-nucleophilic tertiary amine base and a primary amine initiator.
Arsenolipids (AsL) of the type arsenic-containing fatty acids (AsFA) and hydrocarbons (AsHC) are natural organoarsenic compounds present in high abundance in seafood. Since little is known about their toxicity, there is a significant concern about their health risk. Here we report the synthesis of two new AsL and their identification in fish by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled simultaneously to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and to high resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS). The molecular structure was elucidated on the basis of their exact mass and their product ion mass spectra. One of the synthesized AsL has been already identified in fish samples, meanwhile, the other arsenolipid is reported here as a natural product in fish.
