Avoiding antimony – effect of Ca(H2PO2)2 on smoke emission and fire behaviour in brominated ABS

The replacement of antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) in brominated flame-retardant ABS (ABS/FR) is of great interest. This study investigates the influence of calcium hypophosphite (CaP) in ABS/FR on flame retardancy and smoke emission. Different amounts of talc are added to ABS/FR/CaP to evaluate the influence of an inorganic barrier on smoke emission and flame retardancy. The cone calorimeter unveiled a reduction by 46% in PHRR for ABS/FR/CaP. Additional 8 wt.-% talc (ABS/FR/CaP/8Talc) reduced the PHRR by 61%. ABS/FR/CaP exhibited a more condensed phase action, which resulted in less smoke emission. The study investigates the influence of CaP in ABS/FR on the smoke toxicity, smoke density and the smoke particles distribution in the smoke density chamber (ISO 5659-2) coupled to a FTIR spectrometer and electrical low pressure cascade impactor (ELPI).
