The application of a LIBS system is presented. A diode-pumped low energy laser (3 mJ, 1.5 ns, 100 Hz) and a compact NIR spectrometer are used. A scanner allows the two-dimensional element mapping. For the quantitative analysis calibration of the system is carried out with reference samples in a concentration range of chlorine of 0.05 wt.% to 2.5 wt.%. To determine the 2D distribution of harmful elements (Cl, C), concrete cores were drilled, split and analyzed directly. By comparing the chloride ingress and the carbonation, the interaction of both processes can be visualized in one measurement that takes less than 10 minutes with a drill core of 50 mm x 100 mm. Results obtained were compared and verified with standard measurements.

X-ray back scatter imaging is rarely applied compared to classical X-ray projection imaging. 20 years ago the company Philips developed “COMSCAN”, a first application case in the aircraft industry, which allowed even a depth resolution using back scatter imaging. The company AS&E in Boston offers back scatter imaging solutions for the security market. Their principle is to scan the object with a highly collimated X-ray needle beam from one side only and detect the backscattered radiation by a large area detector side by side with the collimation wheel. A new prototype is investigated at BAM for application and optimization in non-destructive testing. As modern industrial application field in-situ testing in additive manufacturing is targeted. The accessibility of the printed part during the production process is very limited. This prevent the application of a two sided X-ray inspection or Computed Tomography, were an rotation of the object is required to acquire projections from 360 degrees. An important advantage for the X-ray back scatter technique are also the materials used in additive manufacturing (polymers, ceramics, light metals like Aluminum or Titanium). These materials with lower density and lower Z values give better scatter signals than metals with higher densities and Z values. The back scatter intensity decreases with increasing density and Z value of the material. But the requirements on spatial resolution and contrast sensitivity are more stringent for non-destructive testing of additive manufactured parts compared to the security area. In NDT sizes of indications smaller than 1 mm have to be detected clearly. The investigation of these limits on a stateof-the-art prototype for X-ray back scattering using rotating collimated X-ray needle beams is a part of the BAM project “ProMoAM”. The contribution shows first results of the optimization for NDT and the achieved application limits for several example cases.

X-Ray Computed Tomography (CT) is applied in industry for flaw detection, flaw evaluation and dimensional measurement. This requires the correct CT system settings for sufficient visibility and detectability of flaws and structure elements. The visibility of indications for human observers on a monitor depends on the square root of the reconstructed flaw area (here pores with diameter < ½ inch) in the cross sectional 2D images, the Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR) and the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). This applies also to 2D-projections, meaning also to “normal” digital radiographs. The ASTM guide E 1441 describes three essential functions for prediction of the visibility of small circular indications in slice images of a 3D reconstruction or a 2D reconstruction. This is the Contrast Discrimination Function (CDF), the MTF (see also the revision of ASTM E 1695), and the Contrast Detail Dose (CDD) function. The prediction of the visibility of circular indications in reconstructed slice images can be determined from the Contrast Detail Dose function, which is the combination of CDF and MTF and a physiological factor c. The measurement procedures and formulas for the prediction of the detail visibility by CDD will be corrected, tested and verified by modelling and in a Round Robin Test with modern commercial 3D CT systems of different manufacturers. Conclusions will be reported and recommendations will be given for the correct psychological factor c and the consideration of the influence of artefacts, as e.g. cupping and scatter.

Neues aus der BAM 2019
(2019)
With rising popularity and availability of additive manufacturing (AM), companies mainly in the aerospace sector, set high requirements on quality control of AM parts, especially produced with selective laser melting (SLM). Since it was shown that those parts are prawn to flaws like pores or cracks, every part needs to be tested. Therefore, NDT Methods, like eddy current testing (ET), could help to characterize SLM parts. Research on ET has shown, that offline ET with high spatial resolution MR (magneto resistive) sensor arrays is possible and that flaws as small as 50 µm could be detected while significantly reducing testing time. A first approach on automated online ET method for testing SLM parts is proposed in this contribution.
This PhD project is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie International Training Network MUMMERING. The overarching goal of MUMMERING is the creation of a research tool that exploits the wealth of 3D imaging modalities applied in materials engineering.
The focus of this work is advanced reconstruction algorithms. The primary objective is the development and implementation of the DIRECTT algorithm. Due to restrictions introduced by the sample or the imaging setup during a measurement, it is not always possible to acquire data that fulfil the Nyquist sampling criterion. The DIRECTT algorithm is intended to produce reconstructions of superior quality for such cases of limited data sets, compared to those of other available algorithms, such as algebraic iterative ones. Although DIRECTT has been developed primarily for the reconstruction of volumes from data acquired by an X-ray Computed Tomography scanner, it can also be applied to the different modalities, such as laminography.
The talk describes the reconstruction principle of DIRECTT. Furthermore, reconstructions of measured data are presented and compared to reconstructions produced by other established algorithms.
Using magnetic materials for energy conversion as an example, this lecture shows how X-ray tomography investigations can contribute to structure elucidation in composites and solid samples. The components are tested non-destructively in order to characterize cracks, pores and other defects and their influence on the functional properties three-dimensionally and in good time in the life cycle of the material. If you combine microtomography with other methods of magnetic material characterization, you can make unique statements about the structure and the functional properties.
To date, there are only very few technologies available for the conversion of low temperature waste heat to electricity. In this talk, we first describe the principle of thermomagnetic generators. Then we focus on the impact of topology of the magnetic circuit within thermomagnetic generators. We demonstrate that the key operational parameters strongly depend on the genus, i.e. the number of holes within the magnetic circuit.

A variety of testing methods are discussed (integrity testing, ultrasonic crosshole logging, parallel seismic and others). Capabilities and limitations are given as well as specific hints for practical use.
Functional materials for energy conversion are important technology drivers needed for the implementation of low carbon energy. Therefore, researchers commonly focus on improving the intrinsic properties of a functional material. However, for applications, the extrinsic properties are at least as important as the intrinsic ones. Consequently, it is important to investigate and understand the external and internal structure of semi-finished products and especially defect dependent properties. The extrinsic properties may change during application and the life cycle of the material as well as through processing and molding steps.
Our studies show how X-ray tomographic (XCT) investigations can contribute to structure investigations in composites and massive samples using the example of magnetic materials for energy conversion. The components are tested non-destructively in 3D in order to localize and characterize cracks, pores, inclusions as well as other defects and their influence on the functional properties and also “in-time” during the life cycle of the material. Exsitu and in-situ experiments performed with non-destructive XCT are predestinated to follow damaging mechanisms of materials under certain load conditions, atmospheres or liquids, e.g. went through several working cycles of a functional material. By combining microtomography with other methods of magnetic and classical material characterization, unique statements about the structure and the functional properties can be made.
From the applications point of view, sometimes complex, three-dimensional geometries are needed to fully exploit the functional properties of the materials, e.g. to ensure a high surface area for heat exchange. Since many functional materials are brittle and difficult to form, shaping is often a big challenge. In principle, additive manufacturing processes offer the possibility to produce complex, porous components from poorly formable alloys.
If all stages of additive manufacturing are accompanied by X-ray tomographic imaging, the process of finding the optimal parameters for material processing can be significantly accelerated.
Based on the quality control of the initial powder material used and also investigations of the shape and arrangement of defects within the molten structure and their relationship with the melting path scanning strategy, Xray tomography has proven to be an ideal tool for additive manufacturing, even for functional materials. Overall, tomographic methods are important tools for the development of functional materials to application maturity.
Recently, various guided wave tomography algorithms have been developed to map structural changes from remote locations. The focus has been on structures made of isotropic materials and little work has been done on structures made of anisotropic materials. Primary complication to implement tomography in composite laminates is associated with the complex forward model to accurately simulate the 3-D guided wave propagation. In this study, we demonstrate that guided wave propagation can be approximated by an equivalent 2-D acoustic model. It is based on finite-difference discretization method in which the wave-field is parameterized by phase velocity and dimensionless anisotropic parameters. The reconstruction of defects is based on a full-waveform inversion algorithm and was implemented on the data obtained from finite element simulations. Results on a localized stiffness defects in composite plates with various layups demonstrate the attractiveness of the proposed methodology.
Diffraction-based experimental determination of Residual Stress in AM parts: A critical discussion
(2019)
Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have experienced an exceedingly rapid growth, not always paralleled by the knowledge about the materials properties and performance. In particular, residual stress (RS) has been soon recognized as an issue in AM parts, so that parts are always post-heat-treated. Moreover, much effort has been spent on simulating RS, especially using finite element methods.
The experimental determination of RS has thereby become increasingly important, and even simple data constitute (to date) a piece of knowledge to fill the above-mentioned gap. In particular, diffraction methods, which are basically non-destructive, offer enormous possibilities to gain knowledge on real components, since neutrons and synchrotron radiation can penetrate even heavy metals up to several millimeters (or even centimeters). Indeed, some success has been obtained, and the knowledge about the origins of the RS fields, as well as their variation as a consequence of heat or mechanical treatments, has been greatly expanded.
In this talk, a few success stories will be outlined. It will be shown how the determination of RS in metallic parts (with focus on those produced by laser powder bed fusion) has even allowed showing that process parameters that were considered unimportant play a major role in the onset of stress.
However, while RS is starting to be considered in the part design, deposition strategy (e.g. build plate temperature), and even in the definition of the relevant metric to assess the quality of a part, much is still to be investigated about the hypotheses underlying its experimental determination. Therefore, some aspects to be aware of, or even to date unclear will also be discussed, such as the determination of the reference unstrained samples and of the principal axes of stress. All these aspects will draw the path towards a comprehensive understanding of the process-structure-performance relationships in AM materials and parts.
The combination of tomographic, microstructural data with other experimental techniques and with modeling is paramount, if we want to extract the maximum amount of information on material and component properties. In particular, quantitative image analysis, statistical approaches, direct discretization of tomographic reconstructions represent concrete possibilities to extend the power of the tomographic 3D representation to insights into the material and component performance. This logic thread equally holds for industrial and academic research and valorizes expensive experiments such as those carried out at synchrotron sources, which cannot be daily repeated.
I will show a few examples of possible use of X-ray tomographic data for quantitative assessment of damage evolution and microstructural properties, as well as for non-destructive testing. Examples of micro-structured inhomogeneous materials will be given, such as Composites, Ceramics, Concrete, and Additively manufactured parts. I will also show how X-ray refraction computed tomography (CT) can be highly complementary to classic absorption CT, being sensitive to internal interfaces.
Additionally, I will show how Neutron Diffraction, which is extremely well suited to the study of internal stresses, both residual and under external load, can well be coupled to the microstructural framework gained by CT, allowing understanding the microstructure-property relationships in materials.
Finally, I will show that BAM is very active in standardization and certification, including production of Reference Materials and Methods.

Photothermal radiometry with an infrared camera allows the contactless temperature measurement of multiple surface pixels simultaneously. A short light pulse heats the sample. The heat propagates through the sample by diffusion and the corresponding temperature increase is measured at the samples surface by an infrared camera. The main drawback in radiometric imaging is the loss of the spatial resolution with increasing depth due to heat diffusion, which results in blurred images for deeper lying structures. We circumvent this information loss due to the diffusion process by using blind structured illumination, combined with a non-linear joint sparsity reconstruction algorithm.
The use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) is demonstrated for efficient real-time data processing in optical fiber sensing applications. Using ANN-based algorithms, two orders of magnitude improved computation time and improved measurement resolution is achieved for distributed strain sensing using the wavelength-scanning coherent optical time domain reflectometry technique.
The distributed measurement of relative humidity is a sought-after capability for a wide range of applications in civil engineering and structural health monitoring. We show that polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) optical fi-bers can be employed as a sensor medium to conduct distributed humidity measurement by analyzing Rayleigh backscattering traces obtained by OTDR. We make use of the effect that water penetrates the fiber core and directly influences the local fiber attenuation and Rayleigh backscatter coefficient. We conducted distributed backscattering analysis for two different pulse wavelengths: 500 nm and 650 nm. The 650 nm results are susceptible to both, attenuation changes and backscatter changes, whereas backscatter results at 500 nm are not affected by humidity-induced attenuation and only exhibit a change of Rayleigh backscattered power as a function of humidity. The combined measurement and analysis of both parameters at these two wavelengths has the advantage that cross-sensitivities on backscatter change and attenuation, such as strain and tempera-ture changes, could be separated from the humidity response of the fiber. We present laboratory results for a humidity range between 30% and 90% for both pulse wavelengths: including step responses, humidity cycles and hysteresis analysis. In addition to the attenuation and backscatter coefficient dependence, we also analyze optical runtime changes as a function of humidity. POFs have the advantage that they can be directly embed-ded into materials such as concrete or soil to measure water content or localize water ingress. Standard step-index PMMA POFs can be used as a distributed relative humidity sensor up to 200 m distance.
We present our research on the development of a Brillouin optical frequency-domain analysis (BOFDA) using a perfluorinated graded-index polymer optical fiber (PFGI-POF) as a sensing fiber. The described works include investigations both on the selection of the setup components with respect to mode coupling effects and on the impact of the humidity cross-sensitivity. The suitability of the developed POF-based BOFDA is proved by a distributed measurement on an 86 m long PFGI-POF recorded with the spatial resolution of 6 m.
Composite pressure vessels for transporting dangerous goods and for hydrogen and natural gas vehicles consist of a load-bearing composite and a gas-tight, metallic or polymeric barrier layer (liner). To investigate the aging behavior of such composite pressure vessels, BAM carried out the interdisciplinary project COD-AGE. The aim of the project was the development of methods and models for the description and determination of the aging behavior of carbon fiber composites using the example of pressure vessels in order to better predict aging and safe working life. One focus of this project was the provision of suitable NDT methods. These included both test-related tests and the possible development of test equipment for later practical use.
In the lecture, test results of the age-related eddy current test on composite pressure vessels are presented.
In aging tests, pressure vessels made of an approximately 4 mm thick aluminum liner and approx. 8 mm thick CFRP layer were examined. Typical application of such pressure vessels are respiratory protective devices of the fire department. The pressure vessels were tested using conventional eddy current technology from the outer and inner side as well as with high-frequency eddy current technology. Both damage to the metallic liner and structures of the CFRP could be detected. A particular mechanical challenge was the inspection of the inside of the liners, since a cylindrical surface with an inside diameter of 150 mm has to be tested with an access of only 15 mm diameter.
An overview of the BAM funed Focus Area Materials Project "AGIL" will be presented. AGIL focussed on the stdiy of the ageing characteristics of additively manufactured austenitic stainless steel with a "powder to mechanical failure" Approach. Recent Highlights are presented and a perspective for future studies.
Residual stresses in Laser Beam Melting (LBM) – Critical Review and outlook of activities at BAM
(2019)
Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have experienced an exceedingly rapid growth, which is coupled with the knowledge about the resulting material properties and performance. In particular, residual stress (RS) was soon recognized as an important issue in AM parts, such that parts are usually subjected to a post build-heat-treated. Significant effort has been spent on simulations of RS in AM, especially using finite element methods. As a consequence, the experimental determination of RS has thereby become increasingly important as a validation tool for simulations, as well as a method for assessing the influence of process parameters. In particular, diffraction methods, which are fundamentally non-destructive, offer enormous possibilities to gain knowledge on the residual stress state in real components, since synchrotron radiation and neutrons can penetrate even heavy metals up to several millimeters or centimeters, respectively. Indeed, significant progress has been achieved, in the understanding of the origins of the RS fields as a function of process parameters, as well as their stability under thermal and/or mechanical exposure.
In this paper, a few success stories will be outlined. It will be shown how the determination of RS in metallic parts (with the focus on those produced by laser powder bed fusion) has even revealed that process parameters that were previously considered unimportant (e.g. the position and orientation on the base plate) play a major role in the onset of residual stress accumulation.
However, while RS characterization is starting to be considered in the component design, deposition strategy (e.g. build plate temperature), and even in the definition of the relevant metric to assess the quality of a part, much is still to be investigates about the hypotheses underlying its experimental determination. Therefore, some aspects to be aware of, or even those which to date are unclear, will also be discussed. These include the determination of the stress-free reference and of the principal axes of stress. All of these aspects will lead towards a comprehensive understanding of the process-structure-performance relationships in AM materials and parts.
In traditional NDT, human is seen as the main source of error. The advances in NDT 4.0 lead to believe that by increased automation, people, and therefore human error, can be diminished. The research on human-automation interaction shows that increased automation does not necessarily lead to a decrease of human error, a phenomenon dubbed as “automation ironies”, introduced by Bainbridge in 1987. The research shows that whereas with automation the known human error can be prevented, there is still room for new risks and error sources, which are unknown. As we advance from automation to industry 4.0 concepts, the possibility for human error shifts slightly to the developers of systems but remains in the interaction with systems as well, as the tasks and task demands change and give rise for possible failure at different stages of the NDT process, as once known.
It is known that human factors (HF) affect the reliability of non-destructive testing (NDT). However, reliability is often expressed in probability of detection (POD) curves, obtained in practical trials, where human and organisational factors are considered only indirectly, through the few people taking part in the trials. Recently, we have observed an increase in the use of numerical modelling to obtain POD curves outside of practical trials. The so-called model-assisted POD(MAPOD) approaches have so far only very rarely included some kind of variation to account for HF. This talk presents different possibilities to include HF in MAPOD and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.
This presentation discusses industry 4.0 from the perspective of human machine interaction (HMI). Based on available literature the changes, new demands and possible problems related to people’s jobs as a result of increased digitisation and use of artificial intelligence are addressed. Combining literature with own experience in non-destructive testing (NDT), the author addresses the possible challenges and chances for the NDT personnel in the era of NDT 4.0.
Rapid cooling rates and steep temperature gradients are characteristic of additively manufactured (AM) parts and important factors for residual stress formation which have implications on structural integrity. This study examined the influence of heat input on the distribution of residual stresses in two prisms produced by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) of austenitic stainless steel 316L.
The layers of the prisms were exposed using two distinct helix scanning strategies: one scanned from the centre to the perimeter and the other from the perimeter to the centre. Residual stresses were characterised at one plane perpendicular to the building direction at half of its build height using neutron diffraction. In addition, the defect distribution was analysed via micro X-ray computed tomography (µCT) in a twin specimen.
Both scanning strategies reveal residual stress distributions typical for AM: compressive stresses in the bulk and tensile stresses at the surface. However, temperature gradients and maximum stress levels differ due to the different heat input. Regarding the X-ray µCT results, they show an accumulation of defects at the corners where the laser direction turned through 90°.
The results demonstrate that neutron diffraction and X-ray µCT can be successfully used as non-destructive methods to analyse through-thickness residual stress and defect distribution in AM parts, and in the presented case, illustrate the influence of scanning strategies. This approach contributes to deeper assessment of structural integrity of AM materials and components.
Laser based Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is an additive manufacturing technique that has been continuously developed in the past years. It offers unparalleled design freedom and the resulting mechanical properties match, in some cases even exceed, those of materials processed by conventional manufacturing techniques. Nonetheless the process is prone to create Residual Stresses (RS) resulting from the sequential melting and solidification of the material. RS can reduce load bearing capacity and generate unwanted distortions thus diminishing the potential of L-PBF. This research activity aimed at characterizing the RS state in Inconel 718 L-PBF specimens using multiple diffraction methods. The microstructure as well as the surface and bulk residual stresses were investigated. The RS analysis was performed using X-ray, synchrotron and neutron diffraction methods to provide information at different depths within the specimen. The measurements were performed at the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und –prüfung (BAM), the EDDI beamline at BESSY II synchrotron and E3 line at BER II neutron reactor of the Helmholtz-Zentrum für Materialien und Energie (HZB) Berlin. The results revealed a depth depending RS state. The longitudinal and transverse stress components measured by X-ray and synchrotron at the surface agree well, exhibiting stress values around the yield strength of the material. In addition, synchrotron mapping showed gradients along the width and length of the sample for the longitudinal and transverse stress components. Lower RS values compared to surface RS were measured in the bulk of the material using neutron diffraction. The longitudinal stress component in the bulk was tensile and gradually decreased towards the edge of the specimen. The normal component however did not change significantly along the specimen dimensions and was of compressive nature. The transversal component was almost negligible. The results indicate that a stress re-distribution takes place during the deposition of the consecutive layers, which has to be further investigated.

Rail inspection performed by ultrasonic rail inspection trains is a complex and challenging process. A large number of variables and parameters given by the environment, the track and the testing-system have an influence on the overall performance of the inspection and the inspection result. Typically the parameter vary in a combination depending on the track condition.
To evaluate the individual influence of each relevant variable, simulation tools can be used. Therefore the entire inspection process has to be transferred into a model using combined modelling techniques.
The goal of this work is to model an instrumented ultrasonic test run with a rail inspection train with the parameters varied by a script over a virtually driven distance.
Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a major contributor to the safe railway operation. Even though NDT reliability in railway maintenance is affected by human factors, there are only just a few studies published in this field so far. Education and training of the NDT personnel are some of the most important drivers of safe and reliable NDT. Continuously improving current practices and tools used for educational purposes can be achieved not only through technical content, but also through the attention to human factors. The aim of this study was to deepen the understanding of possible human-related risks in the manual ultrasonic inspection of the hollow railway axles and to suggest measures to improve the education and training of the NDT personnel. This was achieved by means of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) carried out with eight NDT experts and by a survey of 27 experienced inspectors. The results show that failures can happen throughout the entire NDT process. Prevention of those failures could be improved through the optimization of the organization, technology, documentation and regulations, working conditions and the general process, and through the optimization of the formal education and training. Specialized training of the executives, extended training of the supervisors and the inspectors and improvement of the inspection documentation have been suggested. The study also showed potential for the improvements of the inspection in the field.

Due to the many possible applications, the uncomplicated production and the high application range, reinforced concrete is a widely used building material. This large range of physical material properties still poses an engineering challenge in determining all necessary requirements for predicting dynamic effects under impact load.
Many aspects of impact have already been examined and some correlations have been studied intensively. Examples are the work of Lastunen and Booker, who studied the influence of projectile properties on the impact form. Li has also investigated the local effects of an impact. The field of detailed damage analysis has not been in focus so far.
This presentation shows some studies in medium-velocity impact with the focus on post-impact damage evaluation. The impactor is modified so that the test plates show low penetration on the top and scabbing on the bottom. With the unique tomography lab test stand at BAM the plate is scanned after the impact and the damage is analyzed. Cracks and scabbing are made visible with a reconstruction. The comparison of simulation and tomography allows to create prognosis models for damage characterization.
Non-destructive testing for surface crack detection and head check depth quantification at the gauge cor-ner of railway tracks can be achieved using eddy current methods. With the extension of the tested zone to the running surface, rail defect signal types other than head checks can be measured. Due to their most-ly irregular shape, a quantitation based on a calibration against regular test cracks of varying depth may not be linear. Estimates of the expected influence of more complex crack patterns may be obtained by a finite element simulation of sufficiently simple limiting cases, like two displaced or intersecting cracks or a simply branched or flexed crack. As a first step, a 3D finite element model of the HC10 eddy current probe distributed by Prüftechnik Linke und Rühe (PLR), Germany was built and verified against meas-ured results from an (easily fabricated) reference block with isolated long cracks.
For more than 60 years ultrasonic rail inspection is used as non-destructive testing method to ensure the safe operation of rail tracks. Constantly increasing traffic density and heavy loads have been the motor for the development of new test equipment from handheld devices to rail inspection trains. (Krull 2003)Up to the present most of the system solutions feature conventional ultrasonic transducers housed in wheel-type and slide-type probes. Different tasks have to be carried out during an in-service inspection for flaws in the rail head, rail web and rail foot as well as rolling contact fatigue (Heckel 2018). The more tasks the inspection system has to perform, the more probes are needed. Compared against standard ultrasonic testing methods the application of array probes offers advantages and flexibility by the electronic steering possibilities to control the transmitted and received sound fields. This allows to increase functionality by software while decreasing the number of probes needed in hardware in parallel. One drawback in application of phased array probes is that the repetition frequency of the subsequent measurements will be reduced by the number of virtual probe functions each phased array probe has to perform. This may limit the range of use for phased array probes in high speed applications. To overcome these limits special designs for array probes and signal processing are necessary.
Damage Quantification in Aluminium-CFRP Composite Structures using Guided Wave Wavenumber Mapping
(2019)
The use of composite materials is associated not only with the advantages of weight reduction and improved structural performance but also with the risk of barely visible impacts or manufacturing damages. One of the promising techniques for the detection and characterisation of such damages is based on ultrasonic guided wave propagation and analysis. However, the multimodal nature and dispersive behaviour of these waves make their analysis difficult. Various signal processing techniques have been proposed for easier interpretation of guided wave signals and extraction of the necessary information about the damage. One of them is the wavenumber mapping which consists of creating a cartography of the wavenumber of a propagating mode over an inspected area, using a dense wavefield acquisition measured for example with a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer. This technique allows both the quantification of the in-plane size and the depth of damage, for example, impact-induced delamination in composite laminates.
In this contribution, wavenumber mapping is applied to a delaminated aluminium-CFRP composite structure which corresponds to composite-overwrapped pressure vessels used for storing gases in aerospace and automotive industries. The analysis of experimental data obtained from measurements of guided waves propagating in an aluminium-CFRP composite plate with impact-induced damage is performed. The output of the imaging is a three-dimensional representation of the delamination induced by the impact. Good agreement between conventional ultrasonic testing and guided wave damage mapping can be found.
Aluminum alloys are extensively used in the automotive industry. Particularly, squeeze casting production of Al-Si alloys is employed in the conception of metal matrix composites (MMC) for combustion engines. Such materials are of a high interest since they allow combining improved mechanical properties and reduced weight and hence improve efficiency. We investigate two types of MMCs, which can be potentially used for production of combustion engine pistons: 1) a near-eutectic cast AlSi12CuMgNi alloy reinforced with 15%vol. Al2O3 random planar oriented short fibers and 2) the same alloy reinforced with 7%vol. Al2O3 random planar oriented short fibers + 15%vol. SiC particles.
Complex 3D microstructure of the samples in as-cast condition, consisting of four and five phases (Al matrix, eutectic Si, intermetallics, Al2O3 fibers and SiC particles) was investigated by synchrotron computed tomography (CT). Advanced methods based on machine learning were applied for segmentation of all phases. This allowed extracting quantitative information such as volume fraction, shape and interconnectivity of every phase.
In-situ compression tests during neutron diffraction experiments were used to track the load transfer among phases, while CT on pre-strained samples to monitor and quantify damage. A micromechanical model was developed to simulate the evolution of the internal stress of each phase during uniaxial compression. We showed that in composites with the Al2O3 fiber mat plane perpendicular to the load axis the Al-alloy matrix presents a large hydrostatic stress component, i.e. undergoes compression also in the direction transverse to the external load. This feature holds with and without the addition of SiC ceramic reinforcement and is absent in the case when the Al2O3 fiber mat plane is parallel to the load axis. We show, that the intermetallics play a decisive role at very high loads, when all other reinforcement phases suffer (extensive) damage. The addition of SiC particles does alleviate the load on the Al2O3 fibers, on the eutectic Si, and on the intermetallic phases in both cases of parallel and orthogonal (to the load axis) Al2O3 fiber orientation. Apart from the beneficial addition of ceramic reinforcement, the presence of intermetallic phase and eutectic silicon, forming an interconnected network even at high loads, when single particles break, confers peculiar properties to these multi-phase composites.
Reinforced concrete (RC) is used as structural material in most diverse civil engineering applications. For the variability of its physical properties it is still an engineering challenge to meet all necessary requirements for the prediction of dynamic effects under impact loading. In this paper, investigations are shown within the scope of quantifying and evaluating the damage caused by an impact. The experimental investigations are performed in the field of low- and medium-velocity impact. The chosen flat nose shape results in small penetrations on the top side and scabbing on the bottom side. The plate is scanned with an adapted planar tomographic examination after the impact, and the damage is analysed, afterwards. Cracks and spalling are made visible with a reconstruction. The numerical model validated on the tomographic results justifies the application for further predictions of the damage description.
The application of phased arrays in either linear or matrix arrangement in combination with signal processing opens the door for the mechanized inspection of different thin wall materials itself as well as their joining methods.
Modern lightweight components are typically manufactured by a composition of different types of e.g. steels, metals, fiber reinforced plastics and glass. Dependent on the material combinations e.g. welding, brazing, bonding, cladding or coating may be applied during the manufacturing process to join different semi-finished products to form the component.
The resulting complex material composition and different damage mechanisms pose new challenges to non-destructive testing with ultrasound due to the different material properties and the overall arrangement of the materials employed.
The sound field variation capabilities of array probes may be helpful to overcome some of these challenges if adapted to the specific inspection task.
Examples for the non-destructive mechanized phased array inspection of different types of materials and joining methods will be presented.
Despite of the significant advances in AM process optimization there is still a lack of experimental results and understanding regarding the mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution of AMparts, especially in loading conditions typical for safety-relevant applications e.g. in the aerospace or power engineering. Within the scope of the presented investigations, a characterization of the fatigue behavior of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V in the low cycle fatigue regime was carried out in the range of 0.3 to 1.0 % strain amplitude at room temperature, 250°C and 400°C. The Ti-6Al-4V specimens are machined out of lean cylindrical rods, which were fabricated using powder laser metal deposition (LMD) with an improved build-up strategy. The improved strategy incorporates variable track overlap ratios to achieve a constant growth in the shell and core area. The low-cycle-fatigue behavior is described based on cyclic deformation curves and strain-based fatigue life curves. The lifetimes are fitted based on the Manson-Coffin-Basquin relationship. A characterization of the microstructure and the Lack-of-Fusion (LoF)-defect-structure in the as-built state is performed using optical light microscopy and high-resolution computed tomography (CT) respectively. The failure mechanism under loading is described in terms of LoF-defects-evolution and crack growth mechanism based on an interrupted LCF test with selected test parameters. After failure, scanning electron microscopy, digital and optical light microscopy and CT are used to describe the failure mechanisms both in the longitudinal direction and in the cross section of the specimens. The fatigue lives obtained are comparable with results from previous related studies and are shorter than those of traditionally manufactured (wrought) Ti-6Al-4V. In this study new experimental data and understanding of the mechanical behavior under application-relevant loading conditions (high temperature, cyclic plasticity) is gained. Furthermore, a better understanding of the role of LoFdefects and AM-typical microstructural features on the failure mechanism of LMD Ti-6Al-4V is achieved.
An essential task in many industries, e.g. food, petrol or chemical industry, is the precise and accurate characterization of liquids. Therefore, the development of innovative in-line sensors is of great interest. New concepts based on periodic structures, so-called phononic crystals (PnCs), are an interesting idea for the design of innovative sensors.
A PnC-based sensor can be designed by introducing a resonance inside a bandgap, a frequency region where no wave propagation is allowed. High-Q measurement systems using PnCs are already reported in the literature. However, existing designs cannot be implemented into a piping system directly, but need special fittings, openings or by-passes to be in contact with the liquid.
To circumvent this issue, we develop a new sensor based on PnCs, which can be directly implemented as part of the piping system. For this purpose, we use a PnC consisting of hollow cylinders with a periodic change of the outer diameter.
A bandgap could be found for the described geometry without fluid in simulation and measurement. However, simulations show, that a bandgap for fluid-filled cylinders can only be obtained for quasi-longitudinal modes. Hence, we propose a mode selective excitation for the sensor.
