There is an urgent demand for reliable data on microplastic analysis, particularly on its physico-chemical properties as well as validated methodology to obtain such data. Through interlaboratory comparisons (ILCs) it becomes possible to assess accuracy and precision of methods by involving many laboratories around the world. At BAM, my tasks focused around organisation of an ILC on physico-chemical characterisation of microplastic detection methods under the international pre-standardisation platform VAMAS (www.vamas.org/twa45/) as Project 2 “Development of standardized methodologies for characterisation of microplastics with microscopy and spectroscopy methods” under the Technical Working Area TWA 45 “Micro and Nano Plastics in the Environment”.
With a proud number of 84 participants this ILC is able to provide superior statistical results. Thermoanalytical (Py-GC/MS and TED-GC/MS) and vibrational (µ-IR and µ-Raman) methods were asked for identification and quantification of microplastic test samples according to mass or particle number. Preliminary results indicate which methods show a higher accuracy and precision and reveal some sample preparation ideas which work best for microplastics characterisation. At the end of the ILC an overall plausibility of the results will be assessed.
Rapid tests and assays to be used outside of a laboratory for non-trained personal and also at a point of need are becoming increasingly important in areas such as health, food, security, or the environment. Specially on that regard, paper-based sensors are emerging as a new class of devices because they fulfil the requisites of the "World Health Organization" to be ASSURED: affordable, sensitive, specific, user-friendly, rapid and robust, equipment free and deliverable to end-users. The physical, chemical and mechanical properties of cellulose or glass fiber paper in combination with the facility of preparation are making these materials of great interest while looking for cost-efficient and green alternatives for device production technologies. To improve the sensitivity of these systems, a particularly promising approach is the employment of gated indicator delivery systems using preorganized nanoscopic solid structures incorporated on paper strips to produce an exponential amplification of the detectable signal. Having in mind these concepts, several examples of (bio)gated materials incorporated into sensing membranes will be presented for the detection of small organic molecules, having fluorescence or electrochemiluminescence signal as output signal. Compared with fluorescence, it has been demonstrated that the non-optical excitation has significantly reduced the background signal, and with the help of a portable potentiostat in combination with a home-made 3D-printed case fitted onto a smartphone, the sensitivity of the sensing system has been improved tremendously, from the lower ppb range (fluorescence) to the lower ppt range. With this study, the applicability of ECL detection on paper strips in combination with gated indicator-releasing materials has been demonstrated for the first time, presenting a novel synergistic match. Considering the modularity of the system developed, the platform technology potential is obvious, promising expansion of the general concept to many other analytes, applications and scenarios.

In recent years the BAM has been focusing on the characterization of the writing materials of the medieval Torah scrolls. The challenge imposed by the study of this specific type of manuscript led to designing and building dedicated stages to ensure the safety of the scrolls during the analysis. Furthermore, the identification of multiple corrections executed in apparently identical inks required broadening the standard two-step protocol of near infrared reflectography and X-ray fluorescence to include multispectral imaging. This work has prepared the division to participate in the large collaborative project “To roll: Materialisierte Heiligkeit (Materialised Holiness)” based at the Free University, Berlin.
The presentation will demonstrate the aims of the studies, preliminary results and the strategies adopted by the division 4.5 of the BAM.
This presentation deals with the phenomenology and design of pile foundations for offshore wind turbines, and is divided into two lectures.
The first lecture presents a brief introduction to the context and peculiarities of such foundations, and then focuses on the particular case of axially loaded piles. This part is most relevant for the relatively slender piles of the multi-pile substructures (i.e. jackets and tripods). A clear distinction between physical phenomenology and practical design is drawn here.
Design challenges for Offshore wind-farms. From foundation mechanics to wind-farm aerodynamics
(2023)
This talk provides a brief introduction on general engineering design challenges for the offshore wind energy production. Some general features of the offshore wind-energy field from a civil engineering perspective are firstly presented, followed by a brief discussion of some of the main geomechanical issues for the foundation of the offshore turbines into the seabed.
In the following part, an overview of relevant fluid-structure interactions and some options for an efficient numerical analysis are provided, where the hydromechanical Wave–Tower interaction is firstly discussed. Then, some general aspects of the windfarm aerodynamics are introduced. On the one hand, some modelling possibilities for the wake analysis of single turbines and turbine groups are discussed. And on the other hand the relevance of such analyses for a proper windfarm layout optimization is pointed out.
In particular, this talk shows that: i) The performance and behavior of the turbine's foundation is often conditioned by the appearance of large deformations, fluid couplings and grain-scale phenomena, whereby specific physical testing (both in field and lab conditions) and ad-hoc simulation techniques can provide useful insights for design; ii) Numerical analysis of a turbine’s interaction with wind/waves is already affordable in engineering scales, while simplified models can already provide a useful insight into the windfarm aerodynamics. iii) Turbulent wake analysis is very relevant for the windfarm layout.
This presentation deals with the phenomenology and design of pile foundations for offshore wind turbines, and is divided into two lectures.
The second lecture continues with the case of laterally loaded offshore piles, which bears most relevance for the case of the monopile foundations. Here again, a clear separation between physical reality and design methods is intended.
Finally, the last part of the second lecture introduces several advanced topics which lie outside the classical design approaches, namely the hydromechanical coupling effects (i.e. the excess pore-pressure generation around the monopiles), the cyclic pile fatigue and the so-called pile setup (i.e. the time effects on the axial pile capacity). The relevance of the latter two topics is illustrated with experimental results from a field testing campaign on real large-scale piles.
Several recent studies have revealed that the phase decomposition in medium- and high-entropy alloys is triggered by solute segregation at grain boundaries. The chemically complex nature of these alloys already clues that such segregation in materials should be something more than the interaction between solutes and grain boundary, but also affected by the solute-solute interactions during the segregation. In fact, experiments indicate the significance of such solute-solute interaction. Yet, the mechanisms of co-segregation in multi-component alloys are rather challenging to explore and rarely studied quantitatively. Recently, a CALPHAD-integrated density-based phase-field model has been proposed for studying grain boundary phenomena. Several applications of this model have shown its expansive capacity for investigating grain boundary segregation and phase behavior. In this talk, the applications of this model to studying co-segregation phenomena and grain boundary phase diagrams in multi-component alloys are presented ––the term ‘co-segregation’ here refers to co-evolution and any mutual interplay among the solutes and grain boundary during the segregation. In particular, the iron-based ternary and quaternary alloys are discussed. I show how a grain boundary may have its own miscibility gap and how this immiscibility can influence the co-segregation behavior. As an alternative to grain boundary phase diagrams, rather suited for binary and ternary alloys, a new concept of co-segregation maps for screening and segregation design in multi-component alloys is presented. Applying the co-segregation maps, the nonlinear Mn and Cr co-segregation in Fe-Co-Mn-Cr is discussed.
The research carried out at the Laboratory of Spectroscopy of Functional Materials at IFSC/USP, in Brazil, is focused on the synthesis and structural-property correlation of luminescent materials including rare-earth (RE) doped glasses, ceramics and hybrid host-guest materials. For the past five years, we have been particularly interested in the development of single- and multifunctional nanosystems based on core-shell upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) associated with dyes, organometallic complexes and other organic molecules, for biophotonic and sensing applications. In these systems, we take advantage of energy transfer between the UCNPs and the molecules to either supress or enhance luminescent response. Examples include the possibility of bioimaging and photodynamic therapy of bacteria and cancer cells, simultaneous magnetothermia and thermometry, localized O2 sensing, fast detection and quantification of biological markers (e.g. kidney disease) and microorganisms. On what concerns the development of luminescent sensors - a recently started project, our aim is to develop paper-based platforms for point-of-care devices. In this presentation, an overview of our contributions for the past years and our future aims will be presented with several examples.
When it comes to dental treatments, success is not only measured by attained functionality but, to a large extent, the associated aesthetics. This can become challenging for certain restorations and implants due to the complex optical characteristic of a tooth, which reflects, absorbs, diffuses, transmits, and even emits light. Thus, to get acceptable aesthetic results, favourable shade matching of ceramic restorations and implants should be achieved by strict control of optical response, which translates into a materials design question. Optical response is affected by several factors such as the composition, crystalline content, porosity, additives, grain size and the angle of incidence of light on the dental ceramics. The properties to be characterized are colour (and its stability), translucency, opalescence, refractive index, and fluorescence. Several techniques can be applied for the characterization of these properties and in this presentation, an overview will be given. Moreover, particular emphasis will be given on the capacitation of less familiarized public to UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence (PLE) spectroscopies that are versatile and widely employed for functional and structural characterization of glasses and glass ceramic materials.
O3BET Quality Protocols
(2023)
Presentation of the process-oriented approach for the development of the quality protocolls (standard operation procedures and work instructions) for the O3BETs. O3BETs are innovative testing facilities for building envelopes which are developed in the course of the Metabuilding Labs EU Horizon 2020 project.
Sustainable product policy is one pillar of the European Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan. The European Commission is to begin to address recycling, recycled content and repair under the Ecodesign Directive and very likely in the announced European Sustainable Products Regulation. In addition, initiatives on recyclability and other aspects of sustainable products can be observed in France under the Ecomodulation Approach for some electrical and electronic products. Neither the Commission's ambitions nor the Ecomodulation Approach have so far led to a crucially better ecodesign of products.
Therefore, at the EU level, indices for reparability (already developed for smartphones and tablets), recyclability and recycled content of products are being discussed within the Ecodesign legislative framework in an attempt to achieve better ecodesign through advanced consumer purchasing decisions. The product standards requested by the European Commission to assess the recyclability (EN4555) and recycled content (EN4557) of energy-related products have already been published, but are purely based on a mass-based approach. Material-specific aspects such as the environmental impact or the financial, technical and redesign efforts required by manufacturers to facilitate the recycling and use of recycled materials are not addressed. Materials that are easy to recycle and use and have a high recycled content, such as copper, are treated in the same way as plastics that are difficult to recycle and use in products as post-consumer recycled plastics. Including such aspects would be essential to trigger environmentally relevant and significant improvements in product design.
Interaction of L-phenylalanine with Magnetic Metal-Organic Framework: Electrochemical Analysis
(2023)
As the basic units of proteins, the importance of amino acids in organisms is self-evident and therefore detection of the concentration of amino acids is significant in monitoring human health. For example, patients suffering from phenylketonuria should be able to monitor their phenylalanine (PHE) level in a rapid, decentralized, and affordable manner to avoid high levels of PHE in the body which can lead to a profound and irreversible mental disability. Herein, a magnetic and conductive Iron based metal–organic framework (MOF) is prepared using tetrahydroxyquinone and benzene dicarboxylic acid, dual ligands. The uncoordinated carboxyl groups provided the binding sites for PHE. Physicochemical properties of MOF were characterized by XRD, SEM, DLS and FTIR analyses. The effects of different operational parameters: pH (2, 4, 6, 7.2, 8.6, 10, 12), contact time and MOF concentration were optimized for best properties using cyclic voltametric technique. The 10 µl of 1mg/ml MOF (pH 8.6) in deionized water was used as working electrode on screen-printed gold electrode. The presence of new well-defined oxidation and reduction current peak in electrochemical signal of MOF-modified SPGE sensor vs. Ag/AgCl in phosphate buffer solution (pH 1.9) remarks the quantification of PHE. The analytical calibration curve for PHE showed a linear response with concentration in the oxidation and reduction peak current range from 50 to 1000 µM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 35.16 µM.
Multiscale modeling of heterogeneous structures based on a localized model order reduction approach
(2023)
Many of today’s problems in engineering demand reliable and accurate prediction of failure mechanisms of mechanical structures. Thus, it is necessary to take into account the heterogeneous structure on the smaller scale, to capture the underlying physical phenomena. However, this poses a great challenge to the numerical solution since the computational cost is significantly increased by resolving the smaller scale in the model. Moreover, in applications where scale separation as the basis of classical homogenization schemes does not hold, the influence of the smaller scale on the larger scale has to be modelled directly. This work aims to develop an efficient concurrent methodology to model heterogeneous structures combining the variational multiscale method (VMM) [1] and model order reduction techniques (e. g. [2]). First, the influence of the smaller scale on the larger scale can be taken into account following the additive split of the displacement field as in the VMM. Here, also a decomposition of the global domain into subdomains, each containing a fine grid discretization of the smaller scale, is introduced. Second, local reduced approximation spaces for the smaller scale solution are constructed by exploring possible solutions for each subdomain based on the concept of oversampling [3]. The associated transfer operator is approximated by random sampling [4]. Herein, we propose to incorporate the actual physical behaviour of the structure of interest in the training data by drawing random samples from a multivariate normal distribution with the solution of a reduced global problem as mean. The local reduced spaces are designed such that local contributions of each subdomain can be coupled in a conforming way. Thus, the resulting global system is sparse and reduced in size compared to the direct numerical simulation, leading to a faster solution of the problem.
In this contribution, a methodology for fine scale modeling of large scale structures is proposed, which combines the variational multiscale method[1], domain decomposition and model order reduction. The influence of the fine scale on the coarse scale is modelled by the use of an additive split of the displacement field, addressing applications without a clear scale separation. Based on the work of Buhr and Smetana[2], local reduced spaces are constructed by solving an oversampling problem with random boundary conditions. Herein, we inform the boundary conditions by a global reduced problem and compare our approach using physically meaningful correlated samples with existing approaches using uncorrelated samples. The local spaces are designed such that the local contribution of each subdomain can be coupled in a conforming way, which also preserves the sparsity pattern of standard finite element assembly procedures. Several numerical experiments show the accuracy and efficiency of the method, as well as its potential to reduce the size of the local spaces and the number of training samples compared to the uncorrelated sampling.
Fracture mechanics-based methods can be applied to the fatigue assessment of mechanical components containing defects or cracks subjected to cyclic loading. The knowledge of the crack growth behavior for short and long cracks enables the determination of both finite and infinite life regimes. Nevertheless, a first problem arises from the empirical determination of the fatigue data, which vary according to the test conditions, e.g., the test method, frequency and the stress ratio R. This is due to crack closure and further environmental phenomena affecting crack propagation behavior. A second issue regards the lack of standard experimental procedures for the determination of the fatigue crack propagation threshold ΔKth dependency on the crack size. This is problematic, since ΔKth increases with the build-up of the closure effects in the short crack regime and its inaccurate experimental determination leads to large deviations in the assessment and, even more critical, to non-conservative predictions. Aiming at providing more reliable and safer assessment procedures, the present work proposes a method based on effective crack growth data obtained at high stress ratios (R ≈ 0.8). A short-crack model based on the cyclic R-curve and CPLR data is employed for describing the development of the closure effects. The predictions are compared to established methods and validated by experimental tests.
Classification tests (UN 6a and 6c) of firework batteries and composite fireworks in metal wire cages were presented. The cages are intended to be used during transport to prevent the occurrence of projections in the event of a fire. However, the results of this investigation showed that, particularly in the case of articles with whistle effects packed in this way, confinement phenomena occurred that lead to mass explosions and must be considered in future classification.

Corrosion of reinforcement is one of the major reasons in questioning the sturdiness of building structures. The application of cathodic protection techniques plays a big role in controlling the corrosion process to ensure a longer service life of building structures. This systematic study compares the efficiency and durability of various discrete galvanic zinc anode systems available in the current market using different criteria for measuring efficiencies such as potential measurements, electrolyte resistance measurements and several polarization methods to determine the polarizability of the anodes. Results to validate the performance of long-time exposure of discrete zinc anodes in the concrete medium are already shown in 2021. Now the results of analyzing the phase boundary between mortar and anodes by using 3D computer tomography are shown, as also the field application at large-scale specimens where the potential distribution and the current were investigated.

Hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking (HSCC) is well known, and highly sensitive pre-stressing steels are normally not available on the market. But in the case of existing structures, it could be necessary to ensure their safety through special kinds of investigations. Those kinds of investigations are often not applicable in a non-destructive way.
Therefore, a once in a lifetime project was initiated.
In the course of the deconstruction of the "Bridge of the 20th anniversary of the GDR" at the Altstädter Bahnhof in Brandenburg a. d. Havel, new information on the initiation of hydrogen-induced stress cracks could obtained. The initial observation to do several investigations at this bridge are several meters long longitudinal cracks in the concrete web of the box girder above and below the tension duct. The BAM was commissioned by the Brandenburg State Road Administration to participate in a corresponding joint project which is financed by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. The added value of the new information gained in this project goes beyond the specific structure. It describes unexpected new damage patterns that can be transferred to other structures with concentrated tendons (tendon block method and Baur-Leonhardt method) and were previously unknown in this form. These should be made known to other developers to enable them to initiate any necessary actions.
One of the major results is, the wire breaks observed at this bridge can be attributed to cracking as a result of HSCC and subsequent crack growth until breakage, due to cyclic loading from traffic and alternating restraint stresses. The probable trigger here was crevice corrosion processes at the contact points of the wires to the spacer plates in superposition with high tensile stresses due to prestressing after or with in grouting the duct. Tension wire breaks, which may have occurred before grouting and during prestressing, were not detected. The unfavorable gap situation at the spacer plates occurs over the entire cross-section of the prestressing channel and can thus affect each individual prestressing wire. Losses in the load-bearing capacity of the prestressed concrete structure can then be the result. A disadvantage of the prestressing block method in this respect is that a large number of individual wires can be affected at the same time (theoretically all wires), which can reduce the prestressing effect of the concentrated tendon accordingly. With the usual use of only one tendon per web, the possibility of load transfer to other tendons is thus not given (lack of redundancy).

Liquefied Hydrogen (LH2) or Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) establish themselves as important energy carriers in the transport sector. Its storage requires tanks with Thermal Super Insulations (TSI) to keep the transported fluid cold. The presentation includes 2 main topics of the department.
First TSI has proven itself in various applications over a long time, but not in the land transport sector, where accidents involving collisions, fires, and their combination are to be expected. To analyze fire scenarios a High-Temperature Thermal Vacuum Chamber (HTTVC) was developed that allows the thermal loading of thermal insulation material in a vacuum and measuring the heat flow through the TSI in parallel. Within this chamber, 5 samples were tested regarding 3 different types of MLI, rock wool, and perlites. In the presentation, the results are presented.
Second, the studying of accident scenarios enables the improvement of thermal superinsulation and to find novel insulation concepts. This is necessary for LH2 large-scale storages, for which state-of-the-art solutions are not suitable. Within the presentation, a novel insulation concept will be presented.
The importance of tanks for storing cryogenic fluids in the energy industry is increasing because of ongoing political conflicts and the implementation of more environmentally friendly energy sources. Key representatives for the application of cryogenic tanks are natural gas in the form of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and hydrogen, e. g. in the form of Liquefied Hydrogen (LH2), for which significantly higher transport capacities can be achieved with the same transport volume using cryogenic storages than with storages based solely on overpressure.
What applies to all cryogenic transported fluids in common is their condition that must be maintained. Hence heat flows into the preserved fluid must be minimized. Thermal super Insulations (TSI) based on e. g. multilayer insulations (MLI), perlites, and vacuum are utilized for this purpose and have already proven themselves in similar applications. However, for the use of tanks for cryogenic fluids in the transport sector, there is insufficient knowledge regarding the course and consequences of incidents, which is due to the still short period of use and the few documented incidents, hence few investigations carried out in this field. Typical scenarios in the transport sector represent car accidents with collisions, fires, and their combination, which are associated with extraordinary loads on the tank.
The focus of this study is to investigate the behavior of TSI as a result of their thermal exposure to a heat source representing a fire. It is worth mentioning that this could lead to an increase of the heat flux into a tank by several orders of magnitude, and to permanent damage of the TSI, ultimately rapid release of flammable gas as well as a Boiling Liquide Expanding Vapour Explosion (BLEVE). For this purpose, a high temperature thermal vacuum chamber (HTTVC) has been developed that allows thermal loading of MLI or perlites in a vacuum and simultaneous measurement of heat flow through this TSI. The HTTVC is designed to represent realistic insulation conditions and to withstand thermal loads from typical design fires.
The HTTVC was applied to investigate TSI based on MLI and vacuum. It is shown that the thermal stress caused permanent damage to the TSI, with shrinkage, phase change, pyrolysis, and condensation being significant damage mechanisms. The results are relevant for the evaluation of accident scenarios and can thus contribute to the improvement of TSI and the development of emergency measures for the protection of persons and infrastructures.
One crucial metric of interest to wind farm operators is the remaining useful life (RUL) of single components, wind turbines, or even entire wind farms. Occasionally, questions arise regarding how to operate a turbine, even in the presence of manufacturing or design errors, which from a computational design standpoint reduce the remaining lifetime below the intended service life. A typical measure involves adapting the monitoring and inspection plan. Using such a maintenance plan, the author intends to simulate the lifetime of jacket-type structure in a fatigue test. The objective of the experiment is to demostrate that systems like three-dimensional jackets possess redundancies that enable reliable continued operation, despite the reduced fatigue life of individual components due to technical flaws, if an appropriate maintenance concept is in place. This presentation discusses the steps leading to the procedure of the experiment including the design process and the maintenance planning.

The presented research work examines the effects of different fuel-air equivalence ratios and initial pressure on ignition temperature.
This study shows a non-monotonic pressure dependence in stoichiometric mixtures at varying pressures from 1 to 10 bar and a low sensitivity to changes in the equivalence ratio (0.5-2). The results form the basis for our future research into the complex interaction between lubricant characteristics and hydrogen-air mixtures to better understand pre-ignition phenomena in internal combustion engines.
Recent advances in Deep Learning (DL) have significantly impacted the field of materials modelling. DL tools have been recently considered as promising tools to address the complex relationships among processing, microstructure and property of materials. The thermal stability of polycrystalline materials is a highly interesting and complex problem that could be addressed using DL techniques. The Multi-Phase-Field (MPF) method has emerged as a powerful tool for addressing grain growth phenomena from multiple perspectives. Unlike sharp-interface based methods, the MPF approach bypasses the need for detailed information on individual grains. In this work, we use DL to address issues related to MPF simulations of grain growth including numerical efficiency, computing speed, and resource consumption. This presents specific challenges for high-performance computing (HPC) due to the large datasets and complex computations required by both MPF and DL methods. We study various 3D microstructure settings with the goal of accelerating the simulation process while exploring different physical effects. In particular, the impact of grain boundary and triple junction energies on grain growth are to be investigated. The results will be presented in terms of the evolving size and shape distribution of the grains.
Mechanochemistry emerges as a potent, environmentally friendly, and straightforward approach for crafting novel multicomponent crystal systems. Various milling parameters, including milling frequency, time, filling degree of the milling jar, ball diameter, vessel size, degree of milling ball filling, and material of jars, are recognized influencers on the mechanisms and rates of product formation. Despite the growing interest in mechanochemistry, there exists a gap in understanding the mechanistic aspects of mechanochemical reactivity and selectivity. To address this, diverse analytical methods and their combinations, such as powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, NMR, Raman spectroscopy, and thermography, have been developed for real-time, in situ monitoring of mechanochemical transformations.
This discussion centers on our recent findings, specifically investigating the formation of (polymorphic) cocrystals and metal-organic frameworks. Through these studies, we aim to unravel the impact of milling parameters and reaction sequences on the formation mechanism and kinetics. Notably, in the mechanochemical chlorination reaction of hydantoin, normalizing kinetic profiles to the volume of the milling ball unequivocally demonstrates the conservation of milling reaction kinetics. In this ball-milling transformation, physical kinetics outweigh chemical factors in determining reaction rates. Attempting to interpret such kinetics solely through chemical terms poses a risk of misinterpretation. Our results highlight that time-resolved in situ investigations of milling reactions provide a novel avenue for fine-tuning and optimizing mechanochemical processes.
