Treatment and reusing of hazardous wastes have become significant issues of modern societies. Blast furnace sludge (BFS) and electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) are such typical wastes, because they usually contain high amounts of undesirable elements such as zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb).
These elements can cause operational problems in reusing of BFS and EAFD. In this study, the Ferro Duo GmbH and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing have investigated a novel approach for eliminating and/or recovering Zn and Pb from both wastes. Applied was a selective chlorination and volatilization of Zn and Pb as chlorides at temperatures between 500 °C and 1100 °C. Both product obtained, Zn and Pb in the form of ZnCl2 and PbCl2 and the purified solid mineral compound are attractive materials for further use. Hydrochloric acid and iron(II) chloride were used as chlorination agents. Exceptionally high Zn and Pb removal efficiencies of >99.5 % could be achieved with both chlorination agents, whereby iron(II) chloride exhibited better performance.
Polyolefin surfaces (polyethylene and polypropylene) were exposed to haloform (CHX3) plasmas for introduction of monosort halogen groups. Bromoform and chloroform plasmas produced selectively C-Br (100 Br/100 C) and C-Cl (200 Cl/100 C) groups in high yields. The bromoform plasma showed 1-3 and the chloroform plasma 2-7 post-plasma introduced O-functionalities per 100 C. The polyolefin C-Br groups were grafted wet-chemically or by exposure to the vapour of amines, diols and glycols. Thus, spacer molecules could be covalently bonded to maximal 15 spacer molecules per 100 C for the smallest grafted molecules and 1.2 molecules/100 C for larger molecules as octaaminophenylene-POSS. After metal evaporation the end groups of these polymer-bonded spacer molecules formed also covalent bonds to the metal. Thus, flexible, hydrophobic and barrier elements were introduced into the polymer-metal interfaces for high-impact, high-durable and water-resistant metal-polymer composites as measured by means of peel strengths.
In this work, the behavior of the polycyclic musks 6-acetyl-1,1,2,4,4,7-hexamethyltetraline (AHTN) and 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta-
γ-2-benzopyran (HHCB) was investigated upon disinfection by using sodium hypochlorite as disinfectant in a model disinfection basin in order to find new disinfection byproducts (DBP). In the case of AHTN, the carboxylic acid 3,5,5,6,8,8-hexamethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalene-2-
carboxylic acid (AHTN-COOH) was generated by a haloform reaction, being the origin for two new chlorinated DBPs. In the case of HHCB, disinfection via hypochlorite led to the HHCB-lactone. All reaction products and intermediates were synthesized and isolated. The relevant degradation mechanisms are discussed in detail.
