Investigation of temperature effects on ultrasonic velocity in a prestressed concrete bridge model
(2022)
Ultrasonic measurements have recently been applied in the context of structural health monitoring in civil engineering. The ultrasonic method is very sensitive to environmental conditions and material property changes, which might be caused by prestress losses and loading effects on the bridge. However, it remains a challenge to identify the damage mechanisms causing structural property changes from the above mentioned factors influencing ultrasonics. The focus of this contribution is to investigate the correlation between ultrasonic velocities and temperature by the coda wave interferometry (CWI) analysis. Long-term monitoring of a prestressed concrete bridge model under field conditions was carried out to observe the effect of temperature. The homogeneous change in concrete caused by temperature was revealed by applying the CWI method. The threshold value of the best correlation coefficients for the linear regression of temperature and ultrasonic velocity changes was also studied. Experimental assessment will provide a ratio for temperature correction to evaluate the pre-stressing force decrease and its consequences on crack opening or extension.
Reliability assessment of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems
poses new challenges pushing the research community to address many questions which are still open. For guided wave-based SHM it is not possible to evaluate the system performance without taking into account the target structure and applied system parameters. This range of variables would result in countless measurements.
Factors like environmental conditions, structural dependencies and wave characteristics demand novel solutions for performance analysis of SHM systems compared to those relying on classical non-destructive evaluation. Such novel approaches typically require model-assisted investigations which may not only help to explain and understand performance assessment results but also enable complete studies without costly experiments. Within this contribution, a multi input multi output approach using a sparse transducer array permanently installed on a composite structure to excite and sense guided waves is considered. Firstly, the method and the analysis of path-based performance assessment are presented considering an open-access dataset from the Open Guided Wave platform. Then, a performance analysis of a guided wave-based SHM system using Probability of Detection is presented. To explain some unexpected results, the model-assisted investigations are used to understand the physical phenomena of wave propagation in the test specimen including the interaction with damage. Finally, issues and future steps in SHM systems’ performance assessment and their development are discussed.
Performance assessment for GuidedWave (GW)-based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems is of major importance for industrial deployment.
With conventional feature extraction methods like damage indices, pathbased probability of detection (POD) analysis can be realized. To achieve reliability quantification enough data needs to be available, which is rarely the case.
Alternatives like methods for performance assessment on system level are still in development and in a discussion phase. In this contribution, POD results using an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based data analysis are compared with those delivered by conventional data analysis. Using an open-access dataset from Open Guided Wave platform, the possibility of performance assessment for GW-based SHM systems using AI-based data analysis is shown in detail. An artificial neural network (ANN) classifier is trained to detect artificial damage in a stiffened CFRP plate. As input for the ANN, classical damage indicators are used. The ANN is tested to detect damage at another position, whose inspection data were not previously used in training. The findings show very high detection capabilities without sorting any specific path but only having a global view of current damage metrics. The systematic evaluation of the ANN predictions with respect to specific damage sizes allows to compute a probability of correct identification versus flaw dimension, somehow equivalent to and compared with the results achieved through classic path-based POD analysis. Also, sensitive paths are detected by ANN predictions allowing for evaluation of maximal distances between path and damage position. Finally, it is shown that the prediction performance of the ANN can be improved significantly by combining different damage indicators as inputs.
Temperature Compensation Strategies for Lamb Wave Inspection using Distributed Sensor Networks
(2022)
The application of temperature compensation strategies is crucial in structural health monitoring approaches based on guided waves. Actually, the varying temperature influences the performance of the inspection system inducing false alarms or missed detection, with a consequent reduction of reliability. This paper quantitatively describes a method to compensate the temperature effect, namely the optimal baseline selection (OBS), extending its application to the case of distributed sensor networks (DSN). The effect of temperature separation between baseline time-traces in OBS are investigated considering multiple couples of sensors employed in the DSN. A combined strategy that uses both OBS and frequent value warning is considered. Theoretical results are compared, using data from two several experiments, which use different frequency analysis with either predominantly A0 mode or S0 mode data or both. The focus is given on the fact that different paths are available in a sensor network and several possible combination of results are available. Nonetheless, introducing a frequent value warning it is possible to increase the efficiency of the OBS approach making use of fewer signal processing algorithms. These confirm that the performance of OBS quantitatively agrees with predictions and also demonstrate that the use of compensation strategies improve detectability of damage.
The largest percentage of component life under fatigue loading conditions is spent in the short crack regime and in the initial phase of long cracks. The use of Fracture Mechanics in the characterization of fatigue crack growth rate curves has proven to be a useful and adequate tool in the prediction of fatigue lifetimes as long as certain conditions are satisfied. All the above implies the need for a methodical and accurate procedure of assessment of the material response in order to achieve a reliable prediction of lifetime in components under safe conditions, based on the damage tolerance approach. It also highlights the need to analyse the response of increasingly reduced thicknesses, which, as time goes by, show greater differences with respect to those commonly studied and defined in standards and design guidelines, as well as to the experimental studies that can be found in the literature at present. Some examples of thin-walled components are turbine blades or certain additively manufactured parts where, additionally, variations in material properties can occur locally and should also be examined.
Toughening mechanisms and enhanced damage tolerant fatigue behaviour in laminated metal composites
(2022)
In the present study, fatigue crack growth (FCG) in a laminated metal composite (LMC) consisting of Al-based constituents with dissimilar strength was studied. Additionally, the FCG in both monolithic constituent materials was determined and a linear elastic rule of mixture (ROM) concept was calculated as a reference for the FCG of the laminated composite. Crack networks in the laminates were analyzed post-mortem by means of light microscopy and synchrotron X-Ray tomography (SXCT). Significantly reduced FCG rates for the LMC were found at elevated stress intensity ranges compared to both the monolithic constituents as well as the ROM concept. This is the result of the formation of a complex 3D crack network in the laminated architecture caused by the appearance of the two different toughening mechanisms a) crack deflection and b) crack bifurcation at the vicinity of the interfaces.
Robotergeführte Ultraschallprüfung von Gasturbinenschaufeln mit adaptiver TFM im ZfP 4.0-Umfeld
(2022)
Brillouin Optical Frequency Domain Analysis (BOFDA) is a powerful and well-established method for static distributed sensing of temperature and strain. Recently, we demonstrated a BOFDA system based on convolutional neural network which shortens the measurement time considerably. In this paper, we apply leave-one-out cross validation to evaluate the generalization performance and provide an unbiased and reliable machine learning model for a time-efficient BOFDA system.
Larvae and adults of Korynetes caeruleus (de Geer 1775) (Coleoptera: Cleridae) were collected from old churches and reared in the laboratory on Anobium punctatum (de Geer 1774) (Coleoptera, Ptinidea, formerly Anobiidae). Breeding success of K. caeruleus was low, but basic parameters of this species’ developmental cycle were identified. At 21 °C and 75 % relative humidity and a four-month cold period at 4 °C, the development of K. caeruleus from egg to adult appearance lasted 2 years. The pupal stage may be reached and completed after one and a half years. Feeding on larvae of A. punctatum by larvae of K. caeruleus was observed and consisted of a combination of sucking haemolymph and consuming body parts. The sickle-like mandibles of larvae of K. caeruleus penetrate the cuticle of prey larvae followed by pumping and sucking body movements. Adult beetles of A. punctatum were not attacked by K. caeruleus larvae. Feeding behavior of adult K. caeruleus was not investigated.
11 laser printers from 5 manufacturers were purchased in 2017 and tested for their UFP emissions. Size resolved sampling of the emitted particles was done with a 13 stage (30 nm to 10 µm) low pressure cascade impactor. The sampled particles were analysed for their chemical composition by thermal extraction (vaporization at 290°C) followed by GC-MS analysis. High boiling cyclic siloxanes (D10 to D16) were detected as constituents of UFP from laser printers. In comparison to measurements in 2008, aliphatic long-chain alkanes (C22 to C34) were detected additionally as chemical constituents of UFP from most of the tested printers and their amounts were higher than for cyclic siloxanes. Printers of one manufacturer showed very low UPF emissions compared to the other manufacturers.
Self-ignition Behaviour of Bulk Materials: How Reliable is the Extrapolation of Laboratory Tests?
(2022)
The self-ignition behaviour of bulks is usually determined with the aid of isoperibolic or adiabatic hot storage tests; the sample volumes here are typically in the range of approx. 100 cm³ to several litres. The extrapolation to technically relevant volumes holds, however, considerable uncertainties. To reduce these uncertainties, a test stand was set up that allows to investigation sample sizes of up to 1000 dm³. These allow the study of selfignition behavior closer to the conditions that prevail in practice. The suitability (or unsuitability) of the established methods (including dangerous goods classification tests) were to be demonstrated and influencing variables that cannot be measured on a laboratory scale were to be determined.
In addition, various analytical methods were used for the determination of reaction kinetic data of solid bulk materials and to predict the self-ignition behaviour of large storages. These are thermal analyses such as differential scanning calorimetry DSC, simultaneous thermal analysis STA as well as microcalorimetry for highprecision measurement of heat flows.
Complete test series using all mentioned test methods will be presented for crosslinked polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) and conclusions regarding the applicability of the extrapolation methods will be discussed. Hot storage tests up to semi-industrial scale and their combination with various thermoanalytical methods allow a much more precise prediction of the self-ignition behaviour of large bulks. A further promising approach to estimate their heat release rates, and hence, the risk of self-ignition under technical conditions, is the use of microcalorimetric methods.
The services of Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) are essential to provide for trust in and safety of digital products and services by demonstrating that requirements from standards are met. Thus, it is vital that CABs are ready to fulfil their tasks also in the digital transformation, having the necessary capabilities and resources. Our study is the first to comprehensively assess the digital maturity in the CA industry and to provide some insights into the readiness of the industry to support and at the same time benefit from the digital age. To this end, we developed and implemented a digital maturity model tailored to the CA industry. In this paper, we present first results from our survey among 354 accredited CABs in Germany. With our research we contribute to better understand the digital transformation and maturation of CABs along distinctive stages. The findings suggest that the transformation process in the CA industry is just at the beginning, with the majority of CABs still in early stages of digital maturity. Also, only a few of them already exploit the latest digital technologies and applications like artificial intelligence, blockchain or big data analytics. Nevertheless, CABs regard digitalization as a big
opportunity – for themselves and their industry.
The Impact of Publications, Patents, and Standards on International Trade - The Case of Hydrogen
(2022)
Hydrogen as a clean energy carrier has received increased attention due to climate change and the need to introduce new, low-emissions technologies to the market. However, the drivers of increased hydrogen use have been barely explored. Therefore, this research paper investigates the impacts of publications, patents, and standards on international hydrogen trade, an established technology diffusion channel. In a fixed-effects (FE) regression model covering 37 countries between 1995 and 2020, we demonstrate that publications, patents, and standards are associated with increased levels of hydrogen exports and imports. Furthermore, we test the technology gap theory and explore the meaning of our empirical results for the hydrogen technological innovation system (TIS). Among others, we show that publications, patents, and standards can contribute to a more developed hydrogen TIS.
Sound production due to main-flow oriented vorticity-nozzle interaction in absence of a net swirl
(2022)
The downstream acoustic response due to the interaction of main-flow oriented vorticity with a choked nozzle in a swirl-free flow was experimentally demonstrated. The response was obtained by means of impulsive radial air injection in the pipe upstream from the nozzle. The resulting downstream acoustic data are shown to obey a scaling rule that differs, from the one for swirl-nozzle interaction, which according to the literature is proportional to the square of the swirl number. In contrast, here evidence is presented that points to the scaling of main-flow oriented vorticity noise with the cross-sectional average of the square of the transversal velocity at the throat divided by the square of the critical sound speed.
In this study, the concept of a Zero Mass Flow Liner is evaluated. The concept enables impedance control by the induction of periodic bias flow through the perforated facing sheet of the liner. The periodic bias flow is generated by a secondary high amplitude acoustic actuation. By means of the periodic bias flow, the liner can be tuned to different operating points in a given range of grazing flow velocities. The equivalent fluid impedance model for perforated plates is modified to account for the effects of periodic bias flow and grazing flow. An optimization routine, based on a genetic algorithm, is implemented. The method is applicable to any liner concept and uses the impedance of the lined surface as boundary condition in a numerical simulation. Thereby, a set of liner parameters is derived in order to obtain the desired damping characteristics. Based on the results of the optimization, a Zero Mass Flow Liner is manufactured and consequently evaluated experimentally. The damping characteristics are evaluated in form of the dissipated energy along the lined surface. Prediction and measurements show agreement. The Zero Mass
Flow Liner delivers broad band dissipation of high peak value over a range of grazing flow Mach numbers. Under grazing ow conditions, the effect of periodic bias flow is reduced. This poses high energy requirements in high Mach number flow regimes which might restrict the applicability of the Zero Mass Flow concept to grazing flows of low Mach numbers.
(ii) Parametrisierter Ansatz - Ermittlung einzelner Materialempfindlichkeiten
Mikroklima an bestrahlten Oberflächen) erforderlich.
Gas distribution mapping is important to have an accurate understanding of gas concentration levels in hazardous environments. A major problem is that in-situ gas sensors are only able to measure concentrations at their specific location. The gas distribution in-between the sampling locations must therefore be modeled. In this research, we interpret the task of spatial interpolation between sparsely distributed sensors as a task of enhancing an image's resolution, namely super-resolution. Because autoencoders are proven to perform well for this super-resolution task, we trained a convolutional encoder-decoder neural network to map the gas distribution over a spatially sparse sensor network. Due to the difficulty to collect real-world gas distribution data and missing ground truth, we used synthetic data generated with a gas distribution simulator for training and evaluation of the model. Our results show that the neural network was able to learn the behavior of gas plumes and outperforms simpler interpolation techniques.
Up to now, the inspection of wind turbines with industrial climbers has been considered ”state of the art”. However, ever-larger wind turbines and advancing digitization make modern and automated inspection methods indispensable. Passive thermography can serve as such a digital and atomized method while it is well known for its applications in the inspection of buildings or electrical circuits. However, its application relies on thermal gradients in the inspected object such that a temperature contrast exists between damaged and sound areas. This also holds for unheated structures like rotor blades of wind turbines which show no intrinsic temperature gradient and can hardly be heated. Under certain weather conditions with sufficient solar loading and diurnal temperature variations, passive thermography is suitable for the in-service inspection of rotor blades. However, for a reliable use of passive thermography on ”thermal passive” components, the incorporation of these environmental conditions in the planning and evaluation of thermal inspections is crucial. Additionally, the complex inner structure of wind turbine blades in comparison to other objects and buildings require a specific method referencing the individual rotor blades to each other. This allows the distinction between the thermal response of design-specific structural features and damages or irregularities between the three blades. We show thermal signatures of damage in rotor blades and contrast them with structural characteristics by comparing the three blades. In addition to measurements in industrial environments, laboratory measurements are shown and compared to simulations. The long-term goal is to simulate the influence of different weather parameters and thus gain a better understanding of measurements in the field. The results shown here can be seen as one step towards industrial application.
Remote gas sensors mounted on mobile robots enable the mapping of gas distributions in large or poorly accessible areas. A challenging task however, is the generation of three-dimensional distribution maps from these spatially sparse gas measurements. To obtain high-quality reconstructions, the choice of optimal measuring poses is of great importance. Remote gas sensors, that are commonly used in Robot Assisted Gas Tomography (RAGT), require reflecting surfaces within the sensor’s range, limiting the possible sensing geometries, regardless of whether the robots are ground-based or airborne. By combining ground and aerial robots into a heterogeneous swarm whose agents are equipped with reflectors and remote gas sensors, remote inter-robot gas measurements become available, taking RAGT to the next dimension – releasing those constraints. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of drone-to-drone measurements under realistic conditions and highlight the resulting opportunities.
Untersuchungsmethoden beim Fräsen additiv gefertigter schwer spanbarer Kobalt-Chrom-Legierungen
(2021)
Due to the diffusive nature of heat propagation in solids, the detection and resolution of internal defects with active thermography based non-destructive testing is commonly limited to a defect-depth-to-defect-size ratio greater than or equal to one. In the more recent past, we have already demonstrated that this limitation can be overcome by using a spatially modulated illumination source and photothermal super resolution-based reconstruction. Furthermore, by relying on compressed sensing and computational imaging methods we were able to significantly reduce the experimental complexity to make the method viable for investigating larger regions of interest. In this work we share our progress on improving the defect/inhomogeneity characterization using fully 2D spatially structured illumination patterns instead of scanning with a single laser spot. The experimental approach is based on the repeated blind pseudo-random illumination using modern projector technology and a high-power laser. In the subsequent post-processing, several measurements are then combined by taking advantage of the joint sparsity of the defects within the sample applying 2D-photothermal super resolution reconstruction. Here, enhanced nonlinear convex optimization techniques are utilized for solving the underlying ill-determined inverse problem for typical simple defect geometries. As a result, a higher resolution defect/inhomogeneity map can be obtained at a fraction of the measurement time previously needed.
The work on Tribology, digitalisation, and the harmonised procedures developed in i-TRIBOMAT Open Innovation Testbed was presented. The project develops procedures and shares ideas on how to deal with characterisation techniques and provide services to end users in different places and locations, which is realised by adopting a common and widely agreed procedures. i-TRIBOMAT is active also via YouTube platform to enhance communication and spread the word amongst the interested parties and society.
In the last few years, the use of machine learning has emerged in the field of distributed fiber optic sensors as a promising approach to enhance their performance and provide new capabilities. In this study, we use machine learning for simultaneous measurements of temperature and humidity in polyimide (PI)-coated optical fibers based on Brillouin Brillouin optical frequency domain analysis (BOFDA). Different non-linear machine learning algorithms are employed, namely polynomial regression, decision trees and artificial neural networks (ANNs), and their discrimination performance is benchmarked against that of the conventional linear regression. The performance is evaluated using leave-one-out cross-validation to ensure that the models are reliable and able to generalize well on new data. We show that nonlinear machine learning algorithms outperform the conventional linear regression and thus could pave the way towards simultaneous cost-effective temperature and humidity distributed sensing, which has the potential to find attractive new applications in the field of civil and geotechnical engineering, from structural health monitoring of dikes and bridges to subsea cables and long pipelines corrosion detection.
Hundreds of papyrus rolls, carbonized during the 79CE eruption of Mount Vesuvius, were discovered in 1754 at Herculaneum. Sophisticated mechanical methods for unrolling the best-preserved scrolls have been applied, with varying success. However, such processes have been abandoned, to prevent risk from irremediable damage or loss and to preserve the integrity of the extremely fragile rolls. Following the development of X-ray based non-invasive techniques, attempts to virtually unroll the scrolls were made. The most common ink in Antiquity was carbon-based, and the main element of carbonized papyrus is carbon, making these investigations difficult. However, some attempts with synchrotron X-ray phase-contrast tomography (XPCT) were successful. Recently, the identification of antique inks containing metals raised hope that if some of the inks contain metal the rolls can be virtually unrolled using conventional CT- technique. We investigated the inks of a selection of partially unrolled fragments stored at the Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli with X-ray fluorescence in order to select the best candidates for tomography. Despite the many difficulties (analysis of several layers sticking together, letters barely visible, difficulty to separate contribution from the ink and from the papyrus, inhomogeneity of the support, fragility of the fragments…), encouraging results were found, with a number of inks from Greek fragments found to contain additions to the soot (Fe, Pb, Cu P).
Investigation of the internal impact during a 9 m drop test of an accident-safe waste package
(2021)
The safety assessment of packages for the transport of radioactive material follows the IAEA regulations and guidance. The specified regulatory tests cover severe accidents and demonstrate the package containment system integrity.
Special attention must be drawn to the behaviour of the content which could move inside the package due to unpreventable gaps caused by the loading procedure and the structure of the content. A possible internal impact of the content which occurs during the drop tests onto the lid system is investigated. The IAEA regulations SSR-6 and the Guidance SSG-26, revised recently, consider input from Germany and France related to the significance of internal gaps.
In the context of a waste package design assessment, a model was equipped with a representative content to conduct a drop test with an internal impact. The weight and kinetic impact of this content covered all possible real contents. The objective of the test was to maximize the load onto the lid system and to prove the mechanical integrity by complying with the required leak tightness. The test was conducted
conservatively at a package temperature lower than -40 °C at the BAM Test Site Technical Safety.
This paper gives an overview of efforts to address internal gaps and their consequences, and the BAM efforts with the implementation of this topic into IAEA regulations and guidance material. The paper then focuses on the conduction of a drop test and investigation of internal component impact.
The tropical environment of Sri Lanka accelerates bio-deterioration of cultural objects. Termites are one of the most damaging insect pests destroying the cellulose components of historical artifacts. Herbal extracts obtained from resin of Vateria copallifera (Retzius) Alston and seeds of Madhuca longifolia (Konig) Macbride have been used for centuries to preserve e.g. palm leaf manuscripts from insect attack. Herbal extractions of these traditional products for palm leaf manuscript were tested for their effect against the termite species Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, 1909. Natural and artificial aged herbal extractions were tested to obtain a repellent index. Resin oil of V. copallifera caused slightly higher repellencies than M. longifolia. Artificially aged samples produced lower repellencies than naturally aged samples. The results indicate that the active ingredients are volatile. The potential for barrier treatment was tested only with V. copallifera. Tunnelling-behavior of C. formosanus workers through sand in the presence of V. copallifera resin oil was largely reduced.
Atmospheric pressure plasmas interact in various physical ways with their surroundings. They release heat and generate charge carriers, which leads to two effects. The first effect is the generation of acoustic waves due to heat release, known as the thermoacoustic effect, and the second effect is the perturbation of the resting fluid provoked by the release of charge carriers, called “ionic wind”. The direct connection between the charge carrier production of the discharge arrangement and the surroundings also allows the detection of acoustic waves by tracking the electrical current of the arrangement.
This contribution introduces a multi-fluid model approach to describe the acoustic interaction of atmospheric plasmas. In addition, we present experimental results on commercially available and in-house fabricated discharge arrangements for either emitting or receiving acoustic waves.
The studied aluminium alloy is EN AW-2618A (2618A). It is very widely used for exhaust gas turbo-charger compressor wheels. Due to long operating times, high cycle fatigue (HCF) and material aging under the influence of temperatures up to 230 °C is particularly relevant for the wheels. The wheels are typically milled from round wrought blanks. From such round blanks, different testpieces are extracted and a comprehensive series of HCF tests is conducted at room temperature. The tests investigate the materials fatigue performance in the T61 state for two load-ratios, namely R = -1 and R = 0.1. Additionally, two overaged material states are tested, accounting for the aging process the material undergoes during long operating times at high temperatures. The experimental results are evaluated and compared to each other.
Furthermore, the design process of notched specimens is presented. With the notched specimens, it is aimed to quantify the notch sensitivity of the material. Relating thereto, two potential model parameters for the fatigue lifetime model are introduced. Finally, the extended research data management in this project is highlighted and its advantages for sustainable use in material science and engineering applications are shown.
The first manuscripts from the Qumran caves were found in 1947. Within the following 10 years, clandestine and legal excavations revealed some 900 highly fragmented manuscripts from the late Second Temple period. This collection is generally known as Scrolls of the Judea Desert or Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS). For many years after their discovery, text analysis and fragmeents attribution were the main concern of the scholars dealing with the scrolls. The uncertain archaeological provenance of the larger part of the collection added an additional difficulty to the formidable task of sorting some 19000 fragments. After 60 years of scholar research the question of origin, archaeological provenance and correct attribution of the fragmenst are still hotly debated. To dtermine a possible contribution to the debate from the point of view of writing materials, we used otpical and electron microscopy, various X-ray based techniques as well as vibratiional sprectroscopy. We validated our approach with SY - based studies using the advantages of the synchroton radiation source with respect to the benchtop devices. Our laboratory studies showed that often production and storage locality could be distinguished thenks to the specific residues ("fingerprint") they left on the material. Moreover, we have diescovered that diferrent parchment production processses coexisted in the antiquity, and the resulting writing materials can readily be distinguished.
Indoor air quality is affected by the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) or the odour from building products. Odours can be measured by applying the standard ISO 16000-28:2020.
In the study presented here proposals for further technical development of the ISO method are presented. The sampling procedure and evaluation
method of the perceived intensity are investigated in particular because they have a major influence on reproducibility of measurement results.
ln most of the ASR-test procedures, the expansion of concrete or mortar specimens is used as an indicator to assess the ASR-potential of an aggregate or a specific concrete mix. For these tests, the specimens are stored in an ASR-provoking environment, where the reaction is accelerated by elevated temperature and humidity. To measure the length change, the storage must be interrupted for at least a few minutes. Düring the 60 °C Concrete Prism Test (60 °C-CPT), the specimens are cooled down to 20 °C for 24 hours, to ensure the same hygrothermal conditions for every measurement. This limits the number of measurements during the test period and may lead to additional effects, that probably influence the expansion development.
With a recently developed device, it is possible to continuously monitor the expansion ofprisms without interrupting the ASR-provoking storage. Due to the dense database of this automated test, the results can contribute to a better understanding of the ASR-process. This study compares results of the automated and conventional 60 °C-CPT. Tests of different aggregates showed, that the results of the automated and conventional test are consistent, but the expansions during the conventional test are generally higher. Preliminary results led to the conclusion, that the cooling for the measurements leads to additional expansions. Therefore, a modified threshold should be discussed for the automated 60 °C-CPT.
The durability of concrete structures due to alkali-silica-reaction (ASR) is usually been assessed by ASR concrete prism tests (CPT). Therefore, the expansion of concrete specimens indicates an alkalisensitivity.
In Germany these tests are performed at 40°C or accelerated 60°C. Nevertheless, ASR prism tests are expensive, power and time-consuming. For these reasons, an alternative chemical test (“mod. BTU-test”) was developed in the past. The “mod. BTU-test” was correlated with German standard CPT.
In this test, the solubility of silica and alumina in the liquid phase is measured by ICP-OES.
For special requirements in concrete road construction, stricter test procedures are necessary. The specimens are repeatedly subjected to cyclic alternating storage in NaCl. On the one hand, the presence of NaCl increases the ASR expansion, on the other hand NaCl also changes the dissolution behaviour of silica and alumina.
For now is not possible to correlate the solubilities of “mod. BTU-test” and ASR expansions influenced by NaCl. Therefore, four aggregates with different ASR sensitivities were chosen and ASR concrete prism tests (in addition with NaCl) have been performed. According to the “mod. BTU-test” the solubilities of silica and alumina in presence of different NaCl concentrations were measured.
This paper is about the regression analysis of silica and alumina dissolution and ASR expansion tests in presence of NaCl. The regression analysis shows the influence of a quasi-continuous and an interrupted cyclic alternating storage. Additionally the effects of temperature and NaCl concentration are investigated. In the end, a suitable NaCl concentration of the “mod. BTU-test” for dissolution experiments is recommended. The “mod. BTU-Test” with NaCl might be a serious and reliable test method for ASR classification for concrete road construction.
To prevent future alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) damage, which has occurred frequently in the Germanhighway network in recent years, a new regulation has been drafted. This regulation severely limits the use of alkali-sensitive aggregates by requiring that their suitability be verified by certified inspectors using newly developed AAR concrete tests that involve the external supply of alkali. This has led to a significant limitation in the number of aggregates usable for concrete pavements. A novel AAR avoidance strategy is now being pursued, which aims to enable the use of borderline alkali-sensitive aggregates through the application of an internal water-repellent treatment. The addition of water repellents during concrete production should significantly reduce the ingress of water and external de-icing salts into the concrete pavement, thus reducing the potential for AAR damage.
This paper presents the results of laboratory tests to assess the suitability of this new AAR prevention strategy. Representative, highly AAR-susceptible road paving concrete made with an alkali- sensitive greywacke and various water repellents were used as the basis for these experiments. The tests for concrete suitability included determining the conventional fresh and hardened concrete properties as well as concrete prism tests with external alkaline supply. Building on these results, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyses of de-icing-salt intrusion as well as microscopic examinations for verification of the AAR characteristics were carried out.
The results of the AAR concrete tests with external alkaline supply support the conclusion that, when hydrophobic agents containing a suitable active ingredient are used, the AAR damage process in road paving concrete can be sufficiently prevented.
This contribution presents a set of largely novel reference standards specially designed for testing different important physical effects and functionalities of radiography-based computed tomography (CT) simulation software. These standards were developed within the scope of the German cooperation project “CTSimU – Radiographic Computed Tomography Simulation for Measurement Uncertainty Evaluation” [1] and serve as tools for the basic qualification of the sufficient physical correctness and required features of simulation software of CT-based coordinate measurement systems (CMSs) via the analyses either of 2D projection images only or of full CT scans. The results serve as input to the German standardisation committee for the development of a new national VDI/VDE guideline in the series VDI/VDE 2630 dealing with the basic qualification aspect of CT simulation software and shall lay ground for the measurement uncertainty determination of dimensional measurements using CT.
An important focus of research in Industrial X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is to determine the task-specific measurement uncertainty of CT measurements numerically by using simulations. For this, all relevant influence factors need to be identified and quantified. It is known, for example, that geometrical misalignments of the detector lead to measurement deviations if the reconstruction does not consider these misalignments. This contribution uses computer simulation of CT data to investigate the influence of geometrical misalignments of the detector on several measurands found in typical measurements tasks in the industry. A newly developed test specimen with a broad variety of features is used for this study. Angular and positional detector deviations are systematically introduced into the simulations and deliberately left uncompensated during the CT reconstruction. The resulting measurement deviations are shown and discussed.
In this contribution, we consider two applications in which probabilistic approaches can potentially complement or enhance the design and assessment of offshore wind turbine foundations. First, we illustrate in a numerical example that probabilistic modelling can be helpful in dealing with chang-es in turbine locations during the planning phase of an offshore wind farm. In this case, spatial probabilistic modelling of the ground conditions enables (a) an inference of the soil properties at the modified turbine location from field data collected at different locations across an offshore wind farm site and (b) an optimisation of further site investigations. Second, we discuss the uncer-tainties and risks associated with the installation of large diameter monopiles in soils with hetero-geneities such as strong layers and/or embedded boulders. Subsequently, we present a concept for modelling, understanding, and managing these risks based on a probabilistic model of the subgrade conditions, monopile, and subgrade-pile-interaction.
Traceable determination of non-static XCT machine geometry: New developments and case studies
(2022)
It is fundamental to determine the machine geometry accurately for dimensional X-ray computed tomography (XCT) measurements. When performing high-accuracy scans, compensation of a non-static geometry, e.g. due to rotary axis errors or drift, might become necessary. Here we provide an overview of methods to determine and account for such deviations on a per projection basis. They include characterisation of stage error motions, in situ geometry measurements, numerical simulations, and reconstruction-based optimization relying on image quality metrics and will be discussed in terms of their metrological performance. Since a radiographic calibration is always required to provide an initial absolute geometry, this method will be presented as well. The improvements of the XCT geometry correction methods are presented by means of case studies. The methods can be applied individually or in combination and are intended to provide a toolbox for XCT geometry compensation.
