The overview of the activity of Federal Institute for Material Research and Testing (BAM, Belin, Germany) in the field of additively manufacturing material characterization will be presented. The research of our group is focused on the 3D imaging of AM materials by means of X-ray Computed Tomography at the lab and at synchrotron, and the residual stress characterization by diffraction (nondestructive technique). Also, two successful research project in collaboration with CAM2, Sweden are presented.
In this work we present results for three typical sealing materials (EPDM, HNBR, FKM) after up to 100 days ageing at high temperature under hydrogen. To allow for a better evaluation of the occurring changes the results are compared with effects of ageing in air on the material properties. Despite the common assumption that ageing under hydrogen atmosphere is expected to be less severe for the material in com-parison to air ageing, this is not seen for every material.
In particular, the rapid development of lateral flow assays as indispensable tools for everyone to contain the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has fuelled the global demand for analytical tests that can be used outside dedicated laboratories. In addition to their use in medical diagnostics, rapid tests and assays have become increasingly important in various fields such as food safety, security, forensics, and environmental management. The advantage is obvious: taking the assay directly to the sample minimizes the time between suspicion and decision-making, allowing faster action. Especially today, when mobile communication devices with powerful computing capabilities and built-in cameras are ubiquitous, more people than ever before around the world have the basic skills to operate a powerful detector at their fingertips. This sets the stage for a much wider use of analytical measurements in terms of prognosis and prevention, enabling professional laypersons in particular.
However, current strip-based systems are primarily focused on single parameter analysis, whether it is SARS-CoV-2 biomarkers, blood glucose levels, or lead concentrations in water samples. Industrial applications of such methods also often still rely on single-parameter assays, requiring multiple runs even for a limited number of key parameters. Overcoming these limitations depends on developing low-number multiplexing strategies that ensure robustness, reliability, speed, ease of use, and sensitivity.
This lecture will give an overview of several generic approaches developed in recent years to address these challenges. It will highlight how the synergy of supramolecular (bio)chemistry, luminescence detection, hybrid (nano)materials and device miniaturization can result in powerful (bio)analytical assays that can be used at a point-of-need.1-5 Selected examples will introduce key aspects of such systems that include tailored signaling mechanisms and recognition elements, materials functionalization and device integration, including hybrid nanomaterials, gated indicator release systems, strip modification, and smartphone-based analysis.
The development of a Lab-on-a-Chip (LoC) is presented, which can detect reactive phosphorous compounds in the gas phase in combination with an optochemical hand-held sensor. The LoC prototype contains three pairs of sensing materials containing fluorescent indicator dyes in various carrier materials. By measuring the fluorescence response to phosphoryl chloride, a surrogate compound, the detection of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) in gas phase becomes possible within seconds, introducing a novel approach to CWA detection.
The progress of the VAMAS interlaboratory comparison Project P13 "Lateral size of graphene oxide flakes by SEM" within the Technical Working Area 41 "Graphene and Related 2D Materials" is presented. The challenges at sample preparation on substrates for accurate measurement and image analysis as well as two different analysis approaches, containing exact guidance how to measure the main descriptors for the lateral size measurement of the imaged graphene oxide flakes with Scanning Electron Microscopy are highlighted. The implementation of the results into the corresponding ISO technical specification AWI/TS 23879 is also discussed and planned, in relation with the AFM part.

Magnetohydrodynamic technology is increasingly recognized as a promising approach for enhancing the quality of deep penetration laser beam welding. This study employs experimental and numerical methods to investigate the effects of an auxiliary oscillating magnetic field on reducing porosity in the laser beam welding of 5754 aluminum alloy. The experimental results clearly demonstrate a significant reduction in the porosity ratio, thereby validating the efficacy of applying MHD technology in mitigating porosity during the laser beam welding process. In addition, a transient 3D multi-physical model has been developed, integrating the magnetohydrodynamic and metal vapor plume, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the porosity suppression mechanism. The introduction of an oscillating magnetic field generates a time-averaged downward Lorentz force. This Lorentz force, in turn, induces an electromagnetic expulsive force, which effectively increases the upward escape velocity of bubbles in the molten pool. Furthermore, the molten pool shape is significantly enlarged, which further facilitate the escape of bubbles. The simulation results agree well with the experimental results.
The effect of the oscillating metal vapor plume on the keyhole and molten pool behavior during the laser beam welding of AlMg3 aluminum alloys is investigated by experimental and numerical methods. The real-time height of the metal vapor plume is measured by high-speed camera observation. The obtained experimental results are used to evaluate the additional heating source and laser beam attenuation caused by the scattering and absorption based on the Beer–Lambert theory. Furthermore, the dynamic behavior of the metal vapor plume is incorporated into a 3D transient heat transfer and fluid flow model, coupled with the ray tracing method, for the laser beam welding of the AlMg3 alloy. It is found that additional heating resulting from the scattered and absorbed laser beam energy by the metal vapor plume significantly expands the shape of the molten pool on the top region. Moreover, the oscillating metal vapor plume caused the fluctuation of the high-temperature region in the molten pool. The probability of keyhole collapse at the bottom increases 17% due to the oscillating laser power induced by the laser beam attenuation. The internal interplay between the metal vapor plume, molten pool shape, and keyhole collapse is obtained. The developed model has been validated by experiments, which shows a good agreement.
The talk gives a short overview and explains basic principles of research ethics for PhD students. We examine the most important principles in the codes of conduct for good scientific practice on EU and national level. Based on these general rules, we give some hands-on practical tips for daily scientific work and discuss in detail one of the fields most susceptible to conflict, the topic of authorship in scientific publications.
Gas source localization (GSL) helps mitigate the impact of industrial accidents and natural disasters. While GSL may be dangerous and time-consuming when performed by humans, swarms of agile and inexpensive nano aerial robots may increase the safety and efficiency of gas source localizations. Since the small payloads of nano aerial robots limit the sensing and computing resources, strategies adapted from biological swarms, such as colonies of social insects, are used to coordinate robot
swarms. Most swarm GSL strategies are based on the assumption that the maxima of gas concentrations are sufficiently close to the gas sources. However, prior studies have indicated that the occurrence of “bouts”, a metric for the intermittency of gas distributions, may advantageously be used as a more accurate gas source proximity indicator. This paper presents a swarm GSL strategy employing bouts as source proximity indicators and a bio-inspired pheromone system for communication. Nano aerial robots, deployed in this study, act as agents and emit
pheromone markers in an artificial environment upon detecting bouts. Leveraging the concept of artificial potential fields, the agents switch between exploiting the knowledge of the swarm by following pheromone gradients and exploring the search space by targeting a random point. The agents are repelled by each other and by walls to avoid collisions. The swarm GSL strategy is implemented into three nano aerial robots and validated in a real-world experiment in an indoor environment with a single gas source. The results indicate that the the swarm GSL strategy
presented in this paper is capable of GSL in indoor environments and that the intermittency of gas distributions is a better source proximity indicator than the mean concentration.
BAM (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing) is developing an electronic measurement system to be placed inside a waste drum, which will be filled with concrete. The goal of this measurement system is to monitor the process of hardening and the evolution of the concrete itself over time to indirectly identify potential defects such as corrosion or cracking. The measured parameters are humidity, temperature, and pressure. In this regard, particular attention was given to the design of the electronic board’s enclosure, to allow the sensors to measure the state of the concrete without being in direct contact with it. In the scope of the European Commission’s project of PREDIS, the supply of power to the battery-less sensors and the data acquired by such sensors are transmitted through the metallic waste drum by an innovative wireless technology developed by VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) in order to ensure long-term operation while keeping the integrity of the sealed container.
BAM is developing an electronic measurement system to be placed inside a waste drum, which will be filled with concrete. In the scope of the EU project PREDIS, the data acquired by such sensors are transmitted from inside to outside the metallic waste drum through wireless technology.
The sensing system is made of a chain of small sensing units, called SensorNodes. Each SensorNode includes two off-the-shelf sensors, one for relative humidity and temperature and one for pressure and temperature. A SensorNode is designed to have a unique identifier, in order to be connected to other units while being uniquely discoverable by a standard communication protocol. In this way, a distributed matrix of measurement points is created.
One of the most challenging tasks in designing a measurement system to run in a harsh environment (such as hardening concrete) is to let the sensors sense the external environment without damaging the sensor itself.
To keep the external environment away from the electronic board while still letting the sensors measure the concrete behavior, holes have been drilled through the lid and covered from the inside with a layer of a porous membrane. The membrane's pores allow water and gas particles to pass through and let the enclosed air equilibrate with the external environment.
With the help of the developed sensors, monitoring concrete in cemented waste drums will be possible. The derived data will also serve as the basis for ongoing modeling approaches for digital twins within the Predis project. Overall, the sensors provide a means of enabling safe nuclear waste management through advanced monitoring
