In recent years a variety of non-destructive evaluation methods are more and more used for the inspection of constructions. Increasing the information value of inspections and the economic aspects of applications leads to a combination of methods on an automated system. Therefore, the BetoScan robot was developed. Gaining more experience in applications was realized with the inspection of a car park which was unused for several years. The building was made of reinforced concrete with melted asphalt as floor coating. Within the frame of the inspections eddy current, radar, ultrasound and microwaves were used. The application of the BetoScan system and the results are presented in this article.
Nowadays there are several applications of secondary mineral materials and residues. In the framework of the German research project 'Sustainable Building with Concrete', a concept to assess the applicability of already used and new secondary materials in concrete has been developed. It considers sustainability aspects and includes the following four assessment steps: I. Basic considerations, II. Advantages for sustainable construction, III. Alternative paths of application, and IV. Sensitivity analysis. Depending on changing technical, ecological and economic aspects, the assessment has to be performed for changed technical, ecological and economic conditions as necessity arises.
With regard to the conformity assessment of the compressive strength of concrete, there will be significant changes in the EN 206, which is scheduled for publication in 2014. So called control chart systems will be approved supplementary to the existing methods. Any control chart can be used as long as the system can grant an average outgoing quality limit (AOQL) of 5 %. The informative appendix of the standard presents two fundamental control chart methods, the so called Shewhart method and the CUSUM method (cumulative sum), both of which fulfill the required AOQL.
Control card systems are actually tools for process control. They can effectively help to optimise production processes technically, economically, and ecologically. However, control charts are much more complex to use than the methods known from the recently applied standard. This paper presents these new methods and their characteristics using examples. Furthermore, the additional benefit of these systems is illustrated and advantages and disadvantages are discussed in comparison to existing methods.
