Using the method of directional solidification, single crystals of experimental nickel-based superalloys with negative, zero, and positive γ/γ' misfits are obtained. The γ' solvus, solidus, and liquidus temperatures of the alloys are determined, and the microstructures of the alloys after directional solidification, heat treatment, and creep tests are investigated. Creep tests are performed at temperatures of 800 and 1000°C. It is found that single crystals of the alloy with a negative γ/γ' misfit have the highest creep resistance and lifetime (the crystal lattice period of the γ' phase is smaller than that of the γ matrix).
The temperature dependences of the periods of the crystal lattices of the γ and γ' phases, their dimensional mismatch (misfit), and volume fraction of the γ' phase of an experimental single-crystal hightemperature nickel-based alloy have been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis in the temperature range of 18–1150°C. The temperature ranges in which intense changes in the structural and phase characteristics of the alloy under study take place have been determined.
The main difference between high entropy alloys and conventional alloys is the solid solution strengthening effect, which shifts from a single element to a multi-element matrix. Little is known about the effectiveness of this effect at high temperatures. Face-centered cubic, equiatomic, and single crystalline high entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi was pre-alloyed by arc-melting and cast as a single Crystal using the Bridgman process. Mechanical characterization by creep testing were performed at temperatures of 700, 980, 1100, and 1200°C at different loads under vacuum and compared to single-crystalline pure nickel. The results allow a direct assessment of the influence of the chemical composition without any disturbance by grain boundary sliding or diffusion. The results indicate different behaviors of single crystalline pure nickel and CrMnFeCoNi. At 700°C CrMnFeCoNi is more creep-resistant than Ni, but at 980°C both alloys show a nearly similar creep strength. Above 980°C the creep behavior is identical and the solid solution strengthening effect of the CrMnFeCoNi alloy disappears.
We studied the influence of coformers flexibility on the supramolecular assembly of 5-substituted resorcinol. Two cocrystals of orcinol (ORL) with two dipyridine molecules, i.e. 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethane (ORLeBPE) and 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene (ORLeBPY), were prepared by mechanochemical synthesis and slow evaporation of solvent. The new crystalline solids were thoroughly characterized by single crystal Xray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X-ray diffraction analysis (PXRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Structural determination reveals that in both cocrystals, the phenolepyridine, i.e. OeH/N(py) heterosynthon takes the main role in the formation of cocrystals. In ORLeBPE, the components form infinite 1D zig-zag chains, which are extended to 2D layer structure by inter-chain CeH/O interactions between BPE hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl oxygen atoms of ORL. In ORLeBPY, the components form a 0D fourcomponent complex. Formation of the discrete assemblies is attributed to the comparative rigid nature of BPY, which restricts the formation of an extended network.
Rafting during high temperature deformation in a single crystal superalloy: experiments and modeling

Experimental characterization and mechanical modeling of creep induced rafting in superalloys
(2012)
A constitutive model has been developed for the high temperature mechanical behavior of single crystal superalloys, including rafting and its consequences. The flow stress depends on the γ channel width via the Orowan stress. An evolution equation for channel widening during high temperature straining has been derived and calibrated with measurements. Therein, rafting is assumed to be driven by the relaxation of internal stresses. The model is able to represent the mechanical softening at high stresses consecutive to rafting. The model has been applied to simulate rafting during uniaxial creep in several crystal orientations, in notched specimens as well as in cyclically loaded specimens.
This work deals with the formulation of a three-dimensional crystallographic time-incremental lifetime rule for face-centered cubic (fcc) single crystals used for gas-turbine blade applications. The damage contribution rate of each slip system to the total damage is governed by the current values of the resolved shear stress and the slip rate on the corresponding slip system. The damage rule is combined with a crystallographic viscoplastic deformation model. For the nickel-base single-crystal superalloy CMSX4 at 950 °C, various strain- and stress-controlled uniaxial cyclic tests with and without hold-times can be described for different crystal orientations by one set of material parameters. For verification, simulation results for a single-crystal specimen with a notch have been compared with corresponding experimental results. The predicted lifetime is within the factor of two of the measured one.
Laird and Smith [(1962). Philosophical Magazine 8, 847857] proposed a plastic sliding-off mechanism for the stage II fatigue crack growth via striation formation. In their view, the fatigue crack extension results solely from the changing character of deformation at the crack tip during loading and unloading. In particular, the crack tip blunts during the loading stage and folds into a double notch during the unloading stage, resulting in striation formation. In order to verify Lairds plastic blunting mechanism for ductile polycrystals as well as for ductile fcc single crystals, FE calculations were performed for a rectangular plate with an initially sharp crack under plane strain conditions. The plate was subjected to a fully reversed tension-to-pressure cyclic load perpendicular to the crack plane (Mode 1). In the single crystal case the crack propagation simulations were carried out for cracks with crack plane (001) for two different crack growth orientations [110] and [100]. No initial radius for the crack tip was assumed. The actual shape of the crack tip followed from an initially sharp crack by repeated remeshing. To model the constitutive behavior typical for polycrystalline ductile metals, J2 hypo-elasto-plasticity model with ArmstrongFrederick kinematic hardening was used. To model the constitutive behavior typical for ductile fcc single crystals, a geometrically nonlinear version of Cailletauds model based on the multiplicative elasto-plastic decomposition of the deformation gradient was implemented into the FE program ABAQUS. For simplicity, only octahedral slip systems were considered. Using repeated remeshing for severely distorted elements at the advancing crack tip, deformation patterns in the sense of Lairds mechanism for fatigue crack propagation with striation formation were obtained in the case of the polycrystal simulation as well as in the case of the single crystal simulation for [110] crack growth direction. The simulation for [100] crack growth direction with the same stress level as for [110] direction also yielded crack extension by progressive large deformations but without striation formation. The dependence of the fatigue striation formation on the crack growth direction as predicted by the simulation of crack propagation in single crystals is verified by the experimental results of Neumann [(1974). Acta Metallurgica 22, 11551165] on pure copper single crystals.
