The phase behavior of a dendritic amphiphile containing a Newkome-type dendron as the hydrophilic moiety and a cholesterol unit as the hydrophobic segment is investigated at the air–liquid interface. The amphiphile forms stable monomolecular films at the air–liquid interface on different subphases. Furthermore, the mineralization of calcium Phosphate beneath the monolayer at different calcium and phosphate concentrations versus mineralization time shows that at low calcium and Phosphate concentrations needles form, whereas flakes and spheres dominate at higher concentrations. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron diffraction confirm the formation of calcium phosphate. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction confirm the predominant formation of octacalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite.
The data also indicate that the final products form via a complex multistep reaction, including an association step, where nano-needles aggregate into larger flake-like objects.
In Near Edge X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy X-Ray photons are used to excite tightly bound core electrons to low-lying unoccupied orbitals of the system. This technique offers insight into the electronic structure of the system as well as useful structural information. In this work, we apply NEXAFS to two kinds of imidazolium based ionic liquids ([CnC₁im]⁺[NTf₂]⁻ and [C₄C₁im]⁺[I]⁻). A combination of measurements and quantum chemical calculations of C K and N K NEXAFS resonances is presented. The simulations, based on the transition potential density functional theory method (TP-DFT), reproduce all characteristic features observed by the experiment. Furthermore, a detailed assignment of resonance features to excitation centers (carbon or nitrogen atoms) leads to a consistent interpretation of the spectra.
Small-area/spot photoelectron spectroscopy (SAXPS) is a powerful tool for the investigation of small surface features like microstructures of electronic devices, sensors or other functional surfaces, and so forth. For evaluating the quality of such microstructures, it is often crucial to know whether a small signal in a spectrum is an unwanted contamination of the field of view (FoV), defined by the instrument settings, or it originated from outside. To address this issue, the d80/20 parameter of a line scan across a chemical edge is often used. However, the typical d80/20 parameter does not give information on contributions from the long tails of the X-ray beam intensity distribution or the electron-optical system as defined by apertures. In the VAMAS TWA2 A22 project “Applying planar, patterned, multi-metallic samples to assess the impact of analysis area in surface-chemical analysis,” new test specimen was developed and tested. The here presented testing material consists of a silicon wafer substrate with an Au-film and embedded Cr circular and square spots with decreasing dimensions from 200 μm down to 5 μm. The spot sizes are traceable to the length unit due to size measurements with a metrological SEM. For the evaluation of the FoV, we determined the Au4f intensities measured with the center of the FoV aligned with the center of the spot and normalized to the Au4f intensity determined on the Au-film. With this test specimen, it was possible to characterize, as an example, the FoV of a Kratos AXIS Ultra DLD XPS instrument.
A novel photoswitchable rotaxane was synthesised and its switching behaviour in solution was analysed with NMR and UV-Vis. A monolayer of rotaxanes was deposited on glass surfaces and the on-surface photoswitching was investigated. Angle-resolved NEXAFS spectra revealed a preferential orientation that reversibly changes upon switching.
A sealable ultrathin window sample cell for the study of liquids by means of soft X-ray spectroscopy
(2017)
A new sample cell concept for the analysis of liquids or solid-liquid interfaces using soft X-ray spectroscopy is presented, which enables the complete sealing of the cell as well as the Transport into vacuum via, for example, a load-lock system. The cell uses pressure monitoring and active as well as passive pressure regulation systems, thereby facilitating the full control over the pressure during filling, sealing, evacuation, and measurement. The cell design and sample preparation as well as the crucial sealing procedure are explained in detail. As a first proof-of-principle experiment, successful nitrogen K-edge fluorescence yield near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure experiments of a biomolecular solution are presented. For this purpose, it is shown that the careful evaluation of all involved parameters, such as window type or photon flux, is desirable for optimizing the experimental result.
ToF-SIMS has been used to study the surface functionalization of polypropylene and polyethylene samples by exposure to low-pressure ammonia plasma. Static secondary ion mass spectrometry is an appropriate tool to determine hydrogen isotopes as elements and in fragment ions with high sensitivity and selectivity. Specifically the exchange of hydrogen isotopes and the incorporation of N-containing moieties in the near-surface layer of the polyolefins have been studied in ND3 plasma experiments with conventional polypropylene (h-PP) and polyethylene (h-PE) and NH3 plasma experiments with deuterated polyethylene (d-PE). Considering the exchange of hydrogen between the plasma and the polymer surface studied by using deuterated ammonia and polyolefin samples the conclusion has been derived that polypropylene with its side chain methyl groups is more susceptible to hydrogen exchange reactions. For ND3 plasma treatment of polyethylene and polypropylene similar N-containing fragments were obtained and the measured semi-quantitative ToF-SIMS N-uptake data are rather similar. The observation of a wide range of characteristic mixed CkNlHmDn+ secondary fragment ions suggests complex and manifold reaction pathways at the polymer–plasma interface besides simple grafting of –ND2 or –NH2 moieties formed by ammonia fragmentation in the plasma. Finally, indications of an isotopic effect for hydrogen isotopes in the plasma process have been observed by comparison of ND3/h-PE results with those of NH3/d-PE.
The dismutation of CHClF2 to CHF3 and CHCl3 was used to probe the effect of γ-Al2O3 fluorination on fluorine-against-chlorine (Cl/F) exchange reactions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray excited Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy were employed to probe the modifications at the surface of γ-Al2O3 accompanying the initial stages of fluorination. The results suggest that fluorine uptake by γ-Al2O3 starts initially at the surface of the oxide particles, with the formation of a fluorine species that is characterised by a single bond and a high effective charge q. Catalytic Cl/F-exchange is only observed after accumulation of higher fluorine concentrations, for which insertion of fluorine into the sub-surface region of the oxide crystallites has commenced. Quantitative XPS shows that the fluorination level must exceed approximately 10 atom% of the anions to achieve catalytic activity. The spectroscopic evidence suggests that the formation of aluminium oxofluorides is sufficient to provide catalytic activity. The presence of an AlF3 phase is not a condition for the observation of catalytic activity, even though defect-rich AlF3 is ultimately the endpoint of the fluorination process and is itself a Cl/F exchange catalyst.
Carbohydrate films on gold based on dimannoside thiols (DMT) were prepared, and a complementary surface chemical analysis was performed in detail by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), FT-IR, and contact angle measurements in order to verify formation of ω-carbohydrate-functionalized alkylthiol films. XPS (C 1s, O 1s, and S 2p) reveals information on carbohydrate specific alkoxy (C–O) and acetal moieties (O–C–O) as well as thiolate species attached to gold. Angle-resolved synchrotron XPS was used for chemical speciation at ultimate surface sensitivity. Angle-resolved XPS analysis suggests the presence of an excess top layer composed of unbound sulfur components combined with alkyl moieties. Further support for DMT attachment on Au is given by ToF-SIMS and FT-IR analysis. Carbon and oxygen K-edge NEXAFS spectra were interpreted by applying the building block model supported by comparison to data of 1-undecanethiol, poly(vinyl alcohol), and polyoxymethylene. No linear dichroism effect was observed in the angle-resolved C K-edge NEXAFS.
Plasma-deposited polymer films were prepared from organic molecules and investigated using near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for aging effects after exposure to air. Results from the investigation of homopolymers are summarized. Primarily the effect of the deposition parameters duty cycle and power are dealt with. The effect of the deposition parameter pressure is briefly discussed. An example to show the effect of feed gas composition on the aging of plasma polymerized ethylene/allyl alcohol and styrene/allyl alcohol copolymer is also given. In general, change in content of unsaturated or aromatic species, change in concentration of monomer functionality, and change in the oxygen content was observed in the plasma polymerized films on aging.
Ternary alloys have been studied as the gate metal of chemical sensors based on the field effect in silicon. The investigation of reduced poisoning of hydrogen sensors by H2S is presented in the alloy system PdxNiyCo1-x-y. A new method in high throughput screening of alloys is applied. Not singular sample compositions but a continuous gradient in alloy concentrations was produced on a semiconductor sample. A laser scanning system produces a photo current in the semiconductor to map the sensor signal and provide a quasi continuous alloy characterization. The new system is therefore called Continuous Gradient—High Throughput Screening Macroscope (CG-HTSM). Typically 625 alloys are characterized in 15 minutes. The resolution of our set-up allows distinguishing 100.000 alloy compositions.
