Thermal cycling of a Ni-excess NiTi alloy was conducted between 50 °C and liquid nitrogen temperature to induce martensitic transformations and to reverse them after. The starting point was an annealed and slowly cooled state, the end point a sample thermally cycled 1500 times. Positron annihilation lifetime spectra and Coincidence Doppler Broadening profiles were obtained in various states and at various tem- peratures. It was found that the initial state was low in defects with positron lifetimes close to that of bulk NiTi. Cycling lead to a continuous build-up of a defect structure up to 20 0 −50 0 cycles after which saturation was reached. Two types of defects created during cycling were identified, namely pure dislo- cations and vacancies attached to dislocations.
Fukuda et al. published a paper (Scripta Mater. 68 (2013) 984–987) in which they claimed to be able to determine the isothermal nature of the martensitic transformation in a Ti–Ni alloy. They analyzed the evolution of electrical resistance during isothermal holding stages and concluded that the variations were a consequence of the isothermal transition between austenite and martensite. In the following we will demonstrate that the discussed data do not allow the interpretation presented and that the isothermal nature is not proved.
Shape memory alloy structures for actuator and vibration damper applications may be manufactured using wire arc additive manufacturing (W AAM), which is one of the additive manufacturing technologies. Multilayer deposition causes heat accumulation during W AAM, which rises the preheat temperature of the previously created layer. This leads to process instabilities, which result in deviations from the desired dimensions and mechanical properties changes. During W AAM deposition of the wall structure, a systematic research is carried out by adjusting the interlayer delay from 10 to 30 s. When the delay period is increased from 10 to 30 s, the breadth decreases by 45% and the height increases by 33%. Grain refinement occurs when the interlayer delay duration is increased, resulting in better hardness, phase transformation temperature, compressive strength, and shape recovery behavior. This study shows how the interlayer delay affects the behavior of W AAM-built nickel-titanium alloy (NiTi) structures in a variety of applications.
