The results of a structural study combining NMR and Raman spectroscopy of several melt-derived glasses in the system Na2OMgOCaOP2O5SiO2 are presented. The Raman spectra show clear changes in the SiOSi vibrational modes (related to the bridging oxygen atoms, BO) and also verify the presence of non-bridging oxygen atoms (NBO), also named terminal oxygens. The intensity of the SiONBO stretching mode depends on the cation concentration. It can be concluded from the NMR studies that the MgO-containing samples have orthophosphate units charge-compensated by Ca2+ and Mg2+. The silicate matrix also contains both types of two-valent cations and consists of Q2 and Q1 units. Similarly, the Na2O-containing samples contain isolated orthophosphate units in a silicate matrix (Q2 and Q3 units), both charge-compensated by mixed cations Ca2+ and Na+. These experimental data were compared with theoretical parameters given by the Stevels model, which is a suitable tool for understanding bioactive behavior of these glasses. Furthermore, results of the in vitro tests carried out in simulated body fluids are presented and compared with both Raman and NMR structural data.
Two strontium-based dicarboxylate systems [Sr(oBDC-F4)(H2O)2] (1) and [{Sr(oBDC)(H2O)2)·H2O] (2) were synthesized mechanochemically via milling of Sr(OH)2·8H2O with tetrafluorophthalic acid (H2oBDC-F4) or phthalic acid (H2oBDC), respectively. The new structures were determined ab initio from the powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data. Both compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21 /c as two-dimensional coordination polymers (2D-CPs). The determined structures were validated by extended X-ray absorption (EXAFS) data. Compounds 1 and 2 show different thermal stabilities. The fluorinated CP 1 is decomposed at 300 °C while the nonfluorinated CP 2 transforms into a new phase after thermal treatment at 400 °C. The two hydrated CPs exhibit small surface areas which increase after the thermal posttreatment for 1 but remains unchanged for the dehydrated sample of 2. Dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) experiments indicate that both the dehydrated and hydrated samples of 2 depict no significant differences in their adsorption isotherms. The DVS of water indicates that the phase transition after thermal posttreatment of 2 is irreversible.
This study proposes a new guideline for designing biodegradable apatite ceramics. Boron-containing hydroxyapatite (BHAp) particles were prepared by a high-temperature solid-state reaction processing method and were characterized in terms of their chemical composition, apatite lattice defects and in vitro biodegradability. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance analysis showed that boron-incorporation into hydroxyapatite (HAp) derived by thermo-chemical reactions between borate and calcium phosphate phases led to disordered phases (BCaP) of a CaO–P2O5–B2O3–OH system covering the crystalline HAp core. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the BCaP phase must consist mainly of a crystalline oxyboroapatite (OBAp) phase. An in vitro biodegradability test showed that BHAp degraded quicker than HAp or ß-tricalcium phosphate. The biodegradability of BHAp particles can be controlled by boron incorporation into a HAp lattice leading to the formation of a disordered OBAp phase.
Under the Comité Consultatif pour la Quantité de Matière (CCQM), a key comparison, CCQM-K104, was coordinated by the National Institute of Metrology (NIM). The comparison was designed to demonstrate a laboratory's performance in determining the mass fraction of the main component in a complex high purity organic material. Nine NMIs or DIs participated in the comparison. Eight participants reported their results. An additional impurity was resolved from the avermectin B1a peak and was tentatively identified as an unknown impurity by NMIA (National Measurement Institute (Australia)). It was subsequently identified by NIM as a diastereoisomer of avermectin B1a at the C-26 position. Final reference value (KCRV) = 924.63 mg/g, with uncertainty (k=1) = 3.89 mg/g, and expanded uncertainty = 8.97 mg/g. The degrees of equivalence with the avermectin B1a KCRV for each participant were reported. The measurement results and degrees of equivalence should be indicative of the performance of a laboratory's measurement capability for the purity assignment of organic compounds of high structural complexity (relative molecular mass range of 500 Da -1000 Da and low polarity (-log KOW ≤ -2).
The design of sample flow cells, commonly used in on-line analytics and especially for medium resolution NMR spectroscopy (MR-NMR) in low magnetic fields, was experimentally and theoretically investigated by 1H NMR and numerical simulations. The flow pattern was characterised to gain information about the residence time distribution and mixing effects. Both 1H NMR imaging and spectroscopy were used to determine the characteristics of flow cells and their significance for on-line measurements such as reaction monitoring or hyphenated separation spectroscopy. The volume flow rates investigated were in the range from 0.1 to 10 ml/min, typically applied in the above mentioned applications. The special characteristics of flow cells for MR-NMR were revealed by various NMR experiments and compared with CFD simulations and to flow cells commonly used in high-field NMR. The influence of the design of the inlet and outlet on the flow pattern was investigated as well as the effect of the length of the cell. For practical use, a numerical estimation of the inflow length was given. In addition, it was shown how experiments on the polarisation build-up revealed insight into the flow characteristics in MR-NMR.
Influence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on alumina sols prepared by a modified Yoldas procedure
(2008)
Al13 polycations containing alumina sols, prepared by a modified Yoldas procedure were mixed with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Although Al speciation in freshly prepared sols was not affected by PVP addition the decay rate of Al13 polycations was slightly decreased in PVP-containing sols. PVP does not show any influence on particle size and particle growth. The influence of PVP addition on viscosity and flow behavior of modified Yoldas sols depends on their solids content and NO3-/Al molar ratio.
In summary, we report a highly modular solid TTA-UC system comprising of a crystalline, thermally stable PCN222(Pd) MOF with CA-coated MOF channels and with a DPA annihilator embedded in a solution-like environment in the MOF channels. This solid material displays blue upconverted delayed emission with a luminescence lifetime of 373 us, a threshold value of 329 mW*cm-2 and a triplet–triplet energy transfer efficiency of 82%. This optical application adds another facet to the versatile chemistry of PCN-222 MOFs. The design concept is also applicable to other TTA-UC pairs and enables tuning of the UCL color, for example, by replacing DPA with other dyes as exemplarily shown for 2,5,8,11-tetra-tert-butyl-perylene, that yields UCL at 450 nm. Current work aims to reduce the oxygen sensitivity and to increase the retention of the trapped annihilators in organic environments, for example, by tuning the chain length of the carboxylic acid and by coating the MOF surface. In addition, the TTA-UC efficiency will be further enhanced by reducing the reabsorption of the UC emission caused by Pd(TCPP) and by optimizing the sensitizer/annihilator interface.
Boron-containing hydroxyapatite (BHAp) particles were synthesized by the wet chemical
processing method and subsequent thermal treatment at the temperature ranging from 700-1200°C,
and examined the effect of boron introduction on the microstructure of BHAp. The local structure
around boron and phosphorus in the BHAp was analyzed by solid-state magic-angle spinning (MAS)
nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The heat-treatment above 700°C induced the
thermal decomposition of HAp to β-TCP and then the chemical reaction between HAp and B(OH)3
was induced above 900°C, resulting in the formation of boron-substituted HAp particles
accompanied by the formation of β-TCP and its transformation to α-TCP above 1200°C.
