X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) were used to study the formation of AlN films by N+2 ion implantation of aluminium at energies of 3 keV and 100 keV. In both cases, a two-stage mechanism was found, comprising first the oriented precipitation of small particles of the hexagonal AlN-phase, followed by growth and coalescence finally forming a continuous AlN-layer while increasing the implantation dose from 1×1017 cm-2 to 2×1017 cm-2. The results of both methods are in excellent agreement and furthermore provide complementary information concerning chemical composition and binding energies as well as microstructural details.
Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), capacitive scanning dilatometry (CSD) and differential ac-chip calorimetry (DACC) were used to examine the glass transition and segmental dynamics of ultrathin poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PBAC) films. An increase of Vogel temperature (T0) as well as glass transition temperature (Tg) with decreasing film thickness was observed when the thickness is less than 20 nm. Moreover, the segmental relaxation time at a fixed temperature was found to increase for the aluminium (Al) capped PBAC films (<20 nm) in the BDS measurements, whereas in the DACC measurements no thickness dependency of the segmental dynamics was detected within the experimental error limit for the supported PBAC films (10-55 nm). These properties are discussed in terms of the thin film geometry and the relevant interfacial interaction between the polymer and the substrate.
The performance of adhesively joined hybrid components relies strongly on the stability of the adhesive-material interface. With the increasing utilization of multi-material structures in the automotive and aerospace industry, it is of great scientific and technical interest to understand the processes leading to adhesive failure and to develop novel strategies to increase corrosion and delamination resistance of adhesive joints.
The aim of this study is to develop thin epoxy based films and their carbon nanofiller loaded composites on aluminium alloy AA2024-T3 and to investigate their interfacial stability under corrosive and coupled corrosive-mechanical load. Spin coating was used for the layer-by-layer deposition of poly[(o-cresyl glycidyl ether)-co-formaldehyde] and poly-(ethylenimine) bi-layers. Carbon nanofillers are introduced either by mixing into the coating components or in between individual layers. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis was performed to investigate the porosity and water uptake of the model films, respectively. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) results indicated a very homogeneous and dense film with low surface roughness. The bi-layer thickness ranged between 30 to 40 nm. Electrochemical measurements show a higher corrosion resistance with the increase of the bi-layer number.
The main novelty of this contribution is the in-situ AFM investigations under coupled corrosive-mechanical load. For this purpose, a tensile module capable of uniaxial stretching and compression with up to 5 kN force was integrated into the AFM stage. Stretching experiments were performed to investigate the mechanical properties and adhesion of the films, as well as structural changes of the film morphology during uniaxial deformation. The contribution will provide detailed information on the new AFM setup and summarize our results on the stability of model epoxy and nanocomposite films on AA2024-T3.
Refinement of the weld metal grain structure can improve the mechanical properties of the weld and decrease the susceptibility to solidification cracking of the weld metal. In this study, commercial Al Ti5B1 grain refiner was used to refine the microstructure of LB (laser beam) and GTA (gas tungsten arc) aluminum welds by inoculation. The grain refiner additions led to a significant decrease in the weld metal mean grain size whereby a transition from columnar to equiaxed grain structure (Columnar to Equiaxed Transition, CET) was observed. The development of both grain size and shape depended upon the base metal (Al alloys 1050A, 5083 and 6082) and upon the welding process. The GTA welding process allowed a more pronounced and a more efficient refinement than in LB welds. Furthermore, the influence of the solidification conditions on the CET was investigated through temperature measurements in the weld metal. The temperature profiles revealed a faster solidification of LB welds than in GTA welds. The results from the temperature measurements were also used to estimate (according to an existing model) the critical thermal gradient at which the CET occurs.
Surface modification of mild steel was undertaken using two covered electrodes and two tubular electrodes. The two covered electrodes are DIN 8555: E6-UM-60 and E10-UM-60GR; however, the two tubular electrodes are E10-GF-60GR1 and E10-GF-60GR2. Chemical analysis for the weld metal and XRD of the flux covering for covered electrodes and flux core for tubular electrodes were conducted. The most important factor in determining the wear resistance is the microstructure of the deposit layers. In similar carbon equivalent electrodes E10-UM-60GR and E10-GF-60GR1, electrode E10-GF-60GR1 (tubular) shows larger carbides area fraction and better wear resistance than electrode E10-UM-60GR (covered). This could be attributed to a lower dilution associated with tubular electrode compared with covered electrode. The two tubular electrodes showed higher wear resistance than the covered electrodes which is mainly due to the larger Fe-Cr carbide precipitation area fraction.
