The paintings and manuscripts discovered in the sealed ‘library cave’ in Dunhuang, Western China, contain the earliest surviving examples of Tibetan artistic and scribal practice (9the10th centuries AD). Despite their importance, their material characteristics have not previously been studied. The present paper discusses the results of the analysis of paper and pigments in a selection of items across a variety of forms and functions: (i) Buddhist manuscripts, (ii) official letters, (iii) hung paintings, (iv) ritual items, (v) banners, and (vi) stencils and preliminary sketches. The material analysis of these items is presented in historical context, to address three research questions. First, whether there is a correspondence between the materials used in the creation of these objects and their geographical origin. Second, in terms of the choices made in the available materials and techniques, whether there is a detectable correlation between materials chosen and the intended function of the objects. Third, whether the characteristics of the objects analysed here be considered to be part of a broader Central Asian artistic and scribal culture. The authors conclude that a local culture of paper and pigment production can be detected in these results, though further research is needed especially on the geographical origin of raw materials for pigments. The results show that artists and scribes made technological choices in paper and pigments depending on the function of the objects they were creating. Finally, understanding of the broader Central Asian context of these results will depend on future analysis of material from other archaeological sites, and comparison with the results of this study.
The great variety of manuscripts found in the Turfan oasis at the Start of the twentieth Century by Grünwedel and Le Coq reflects the cultural backgrounds of, and communication among, the people who travelled along the network of Eurasian trade routes. Specifically, this Connection is directly reflected by the use and distribution of inks, pigments, and papers. Research is now underway to examine these and a report on the initial findings is given below.
Unter den von Humboldt in Amerika erworbenen Schriftstücken der Kolonialzeit findet sich eine Tributliste aus dem Jahr 1569, die der Otomí Bevölkerung aus dem Ort Mizquahuala im Staat Hidalgo/ Mexiko zugeordnet wird. Sie ist in Form eines Kalenders ausgeführt, Wochentage und verschiedene Produkte lassen sich unterscheiden. Eduard Seler beschreibt dieses Manuskript zusammen mit einer weiteren Tributliste, die in Inhalt und Zeichnung anders gestaltet ist, jedoch ebenfalls aus dieser Region stammt.
Mit den für die Analyse von Manuskripten bewährten Untersuchungsmethoden werden Papier und Farbmittel identifiziert. Hierzu zählen Raman-, FTIR-, Röntgenfluoreszenz- und VIS- Spektroskopie. Charakteristisch für die Herstellung von schriftlichen Dokumenten in der Kolonialzeit von Amerika ist die Verwendung von indigenem Material wie Papier aus Baumrinde und Pflanzenfarben zusammen mit den aus Europa bekannten Materialien. Geklärt wird, welche Auswahl von Farbstoffen zur Herstellung der Dokumente genutzt wurde, die diese als Gruppe klassifizieren könnte.
Die den beiden Fragmenten zugeordneten Farbmaterialien sowie formale und inhaltliche Aspekte lassen vermuten, dass zwei weitere Schriftstücke der Berliner Sammlung `Manuscripta Americana´, deren Herkunft nicht bekannt ist, mit ihnen in Beziehung gebracht werden können. Stilistisch gleiche Fragmente befinden sich zudem in Mexiko, Paris und den USA.
Im Vergleich dieser Fragmente untereinander wird diskutiert, inwieweit die über die Materialanalyse identifizierten spezifischen Farbstoffe einen Hinweis auf eine gemeinsame lokale Herkunft zulassen.
VIS-Spectroscopy of Aztec colors. Possible application of a non-destructive analytical method

VIS-spectrometry is a rapid, non- invasive, mobile method that offers a first overview of possible colorants used for painting. This is worked out in detail for European paintings and applied for artefacts and illuminated manuscripts. Manuscripts from Asia for example show colorful decoration identified to be mostly prepared with mineral pigments such as cinnabar, azurite, malachite or orpiment, which can be well confirmed by elemental analyses due to their color-giving metal ions. This is not the case for the colorants used in pictorial manuscripts from pre-Hispanic America, painted mainly with organic dyes from plants. The palette of colors used by the Aztecs is very rich due to their extensive empire and long- distance communication with vassal states liable to tributes including dyes of high quality. These include for example red cochineal, yellow zacatlaxcalli, tagetes, safflower, and achiotl, as well as blue indigo, or matlalli.
The objective of this study is to find out, to what extent the geochemical characteristics of lapis lazuli can be utilized in respect to its provenance. A wide range of variables is taken into consideration depending on the quantity of samples analysed from a specific geological region and the methods applied. In order to provide evidence, a multi-technique analytical approach using µXRF, ESEM, PGAA and PIXE is applied to samples from the most famous deposits of lapis lazuli. Special elements determined as fingerprints are compared in relation to the forming conditions obvious in textural features. The results and statistical output allow a differentiation that enables an optimized local classification of the blue stone. An absolute requirement for all geo-tracing performed on blue colored cultural objects of unknown provenance is awareness of the limits of analysis. The possible sources of lapis lazuli are tested by analysing the blue pigment used as paint on murals and ink on manuscripts from the Silk Road.
The collection Manuscripta Americana in Berlin consists of fragmented codices acquired by Alexander von Humboldt in Mexico. Some of these Humboldt Codices are published as hieroglyphic writings of the Aztecs in “Vues des Cordilleres et Monuments des Peuples indigènes de l’Amerique”. Starting from a special compilation of seven fragments on plate 36 in the “Atlas”, we investigated the corresponding original fragments using material analysis in order to clarify their historical relations. The analyses were carried out with X-ray fluorescence analysis, VIS spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy in diffuse reflection and revealed typical indigenous colors like cochineal, indigo, and organic yellows (e.g. mangrove and zacatlaxcalli). Four fragments under investigation show exactly the same material and thus must once have belonged together in one compendium. An additional manuscript from Mizquiahuala also shown on plate 36 can be matched to another one that is not published in the “Atlas”.
