Gleichermaßen bilden physikalische Materialkennwerte die Grundlage für die rechnerische Dimensionierung und die Restsubstanzbewertung von Betonfahrbahndecken. Eine relevante Kenngröße bei der Untersuchung thermisch induzierter Spannungs- und Verformungszustände stellt der thermische Ausdehnungskoeffizient dar. Im Zuge der systematischen Weiterentwicklung der rechnerischen Dimensionierung, aber auch im Zusammenhang mit der gezielten Verbesserung der Gebrauchseigenschaften von Betonfahrbahndecken gilt es zu hinterfragen, ob lastunabhängige Formänderungseigenschaften der verwendeten Betone aktuell ausreichend Beachtung finden, ob allgemeine Literaturwerte für die heutigen Fahrbandeckenbetone stets Gültigkeit besitzen und ob deren Implementierung in numerische Modelle zu realitätsnahen Vorhersagen führt. Für eine empirische Herangehensweise ist die Verfügbarkeit adäquater Prüfverfahren von entscheidender Bedeutung. In Deutschland existiert aktuell jedoch kein standardisiertes oder genormtes Verfahren für die prüftechnische Bestimmung des thermischen Ausdehnungskoeffizienten von Beton. Daher wurden unter Beachtung straßenbauspezifischer Gesichtspunkte zwei Prüfansätze entwickelt, die in diesem Beitrag vorgestellt sowie hinsichtlich möglicher Messunsicherheiten und Messungenauigkeiten diskutiert werden. Außerdem werden ausgewählte Ergebnisse aus Analysen an Bestandsbetonen aus dem BAB-Netz dargestellt. Ziel dieser Studie war es, einen Zusammenhang zwischen den Prozessparametern und der generierten Schichtgeometrie zu ermitteln. Dazu wurden definierte Referenzkörper mit einem robotergestützten Schweißsystem additiv gefertigt und hinsichtlich Schichthöhe, Wandstärke und Mikrostruktur analysiert. Fokus der Untersuchung waren sowohl konventionelle als auch für die WAAM-Fertigung speziell entwickelte hochfeste Schweißzusatzwerkstoffe. Die geometrischen Eigenschaften additiv gefertigter Bauteile lassen sich insbesondere durch die Faktoren Drahtvorschubgeschwindigkeit und Schweißgeschwindigkeit gezielt einstellen. Jedoch können diese Parameter nicht beliebig variiert werden, auch aufgrund der rheologischen Eigenschaften der Zusatzwerkstoffe. Zu hohe Streckenenergien führen zu lokalen Überhitzungen und Fehlstellen in der generierten Schicht. Undefinierte Fließ- und Erstarrungsvorgänge im überhitzten Bereich erschweren die maßhaltige Fertigung. Deshalb wird bei speziellen WAAM-Schweißdrähten das Fließverhalten gezielt modifiziert, sodass es über einen größeren Temperaturbereich hinweg konstant ist. Erst die Kenntnis über die komplexen Zusammenhänge zwischen den Prozessparametern und der Bauteilgeometrie ermöglicht die Erzeugung exakter Schichtmodelle für die additive Fertigung. T1 - Guidlines for flexible joint transition systems RTD 1007-4:2020 N2 - Flexible joint transition systems in the form of bituminous joint transitions, type 4.1a according to RTD1007-1, have been used in the Netherlands with varying success. The lifespan in practice was found to vary greatly: between 1 and 5 years. This is too short a lifespan in relation to the lifespan of the layers of asphalt pavement. Ideally, the replacement of these bituminous joint transitions should take place simultaneously as the maintenance of the asphalt layers. In the meantime, research has been carried out nationally and internationally into improving the life span of bituminous joint transitions. In Germany and Switzerland, the regulations have been shown to lead to a life span of more than 10 years. On this basis, ETAG032-3 was established in the context of EOTA in 2013. In a competition "Silent sustainable joint transitions" held by the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management in the period 2007-2012, three flexible bituminous joint transitions have already been tested, two of which were ultimately found to be suitable. These have been included in the multi-choice matrix (RTD 1007-1) as concept 4.1b (anchored bituminous joint transition) and 4.1c (unanchored bituminous joint transition with stretch-spreading inlay and poured asphalt edge beams). Monitoring these joint transitions in practice over the past 8 years has shown that the desired life span is achievable with these improved joint transitions. It is expected that the improvement in life span achieved abroad can also be realised in the Netherlands if several aspects specific to the Netherlands are taken into account:  For large parts of the Dutch main road network, the traffic intensity of 500,000 heavy vehicles per year assumed in the ETAG032-3 is insufficient. This is a factor 4 to 5 higher on the busiest main roads in the Netherlands.  On 90% of the Dutch main road network, in contrast to countries such as Germany and Switzerland, an open layer (ZOAB (zeer open asfaltbeton [very open asphalt concrete])) is used.  In the Netherlands, in contrast to countries such as Germany and Switzerland, bridges and viaducts are made on a large scale of prefabricated beams and 'floating' support systems that consist entirely of rubber supports that can be deformed all-round. Such constructions have a less favourable, high-frequency deformation behaviour under traffic load.  In Germany and Switzerland, a minimum joint mass temperature of -20 °C is assumed to test bituminous joint transitions. For the Netherlands, -15 °C is assumed, which has a favourable effect. The present second version of RTD 1007-4 is a guideline for the development and realisation of a new generation of more durable flexible joint transitions with a minimum design life of 10-15 years and is a guideline for contractors to demonstrate that a flexible joint transition system meets the requirements as set out in the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management guideline RTD 1007-2. Ten European accreditation bodies attended the comparison, four of which had already taken part in the pilot phase of the benchmarking project, which was conducted in 2017 by the German accreditation body Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH (DAkkS) and BAM. The study, designed to examine and compare the operation of accreditation bodies in Europe, used a management tool called Process Maturity Benchmarking Tool, which was especially elaborated and validated for this purpose in the pilot phase, in order to determine the values of indicators, thus enabling a comparison of the accreditation bodies despite different operational processes and organizational forms. The management tool is based on the analysis of selected processes with high relevance for the operation of accreditation bodies. The processes are derived from a process map designed for accreditation bodies in a universally applicable way. The indicators used to characterize the processes come from two sources: The first source relates to data already available from internal databases, reports, financial audits, and others. The second source is derived from the self-evaluation of process maturity performed by the accreditation bodies. The criteria for evaluating process maturities were designed by applying the criteria of the EFQM excellence model 2013 of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) to the processes identified in the process map. These minerals play an important role in many geochemical and industrial processes, including the sulfur cycle, the construction industry (e.g., plaster of Paris), fault tectonics, acid mine drainage, and even rare biominerals. Important to note are the abundant amounts of sulfate (minerals) located on the surface of Mars, and in meteorites, extending the relevance of this mineral group beyond the realm of our planet. In geological systems, sulfate minerals such as barite are also important for indicating certain sedimentation environments. In this regard, sulfate deposits can be used to evaluate the redox state of ancient oceans during early Earth time periods. T1 - Disclosing glittering and sparkling effects in 20th-century reverse glass paintings: a study of metallic pigments and metal foils by means of in situ XRF and DRIFTS analysis N2 - This work presents a spectroscopic study of metallic pigments and metal foils used in reverse glass paintings that were created between 1912 and 1954. Metallic pigments induce a notable sparkling effect by means of the lateral incidence of light, whereas metal foils enhance the gloss and create a glittering effect when the painting is viewed in reflected light. Both effects were desired features especially in modern reverse paintings on glass and applied by artists in manifold creative manner. The paper gives an overview on the composition of the metalfoils and metal pigments in 14 works as determined in situ by X-ray spectrometry. Metal foils made of tin, brass, aluminium and silver were found in nine paintings. Gold imitating Cu-Zn pigments in different hues and with various Cu/Zn net intensity ratios were recorded for six paintings. Silvery pigments were identified mainly as Al pigments, but also as Cu-Zn-Ni alloy in one case. Other uncommon metallic pigments were detected in Arlequin vindicatif (c. 1925) by Floris Jespers, who used not only Cu-Zn and Al pigments, but also brownish Cu and Cu-Zn-Sn pigments. Non-invasive diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was used to classify the binding media of the metallic pigments. Drying oil and natural resin probably mixed with oil were the most common binding media. A polysaccharide-based binder was found in the silvery Cu-Zn-Ni pigment of Ohne Titel (1954) by Marianne Uhlenhuth. Scattering-type near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) in the mid-infrared (IR) region is used here to collect IR nanospectra from both fixed and native plant samples. We compared structures of chemically extracted silica bodies (phytoliths) to silicified and nonsilicified cell walls prepared as a flat block of epoxy-embedded awns of wheat (Triticum turgidum), thin sections of native epidermis cells from sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) comprising silica phytoliths, and isolated cells from awns of oats (Avena sterilis). The correlation of the scanning-probe IR images and the mechanical phase image enables a combined probing of mechanical material properties together with the chemical composition and structure of both the cell walls and the phytolith structures. The data reveal a structural heterogeneity of the different silica bodies in situ, as well as different compositions and crystallinities of cell wall components. In conclusion, IR nanospectroscopy is suggested as an ideal tool for studies of native plant materials of varied origins and preparations and could be applied to other inorganic–organic hybrid materials. Tere is a high degree of confdence among scholars in supposing that the fragments come from the lost work Scythica written in Greek by the third-century historian P. Herennius Dexippus (Δέξιππος) of Athens. The new fragments have hence also been called Dexippus Vindobonensis. In his Scythica, Dexippus recorded wars of the Romans with the Goths (and other tribes) whom he called Scythians. The work had been hitherto known only from excerpts and quotes by later authors. Eight pages of a Byzantine manuscript copy of the ancient text have survived hidden underneath the visible surface of the last four parchment folios of the Vienna manuscript Historicus graecus 73, f. 192r -195v4. The copy is written in a Greek calligraphic minuscule which has been estimated by palaeographers to be of the middle or the second half of the eleventh century. In the thirteenth century, the text (on each of the eight pages arranged in one column, with 30 lines per page) was washed of the parchment and the valuable material made from animal skin was re-used for Christian texts. The new writing largely covered the faded remnants of the original text. It thus became hidden from the human eye for more than seven hundred years. Its discovery by Jana Grusková, a classical philologist specialized in the transmission of Greek texts, resulted from a systematic review of all Greek palimpsests kept at the Austrian National Library in Vienna at the beginning of the twenty-first century and a detailed examination of the four folios in 2007-20097. Curved tracks are subjected to demanding situations due to elevated stress levels, as a function of the operating conditions and vehicle/infrastructure design. In such segments, steering forces are superimposed to lateral load transfers. The steering forces depend on the condition and the design of the centre plate and bogies’ suspensions design. While the friction at the centre plate provides the needed damping to mitigate the hunting vibration of the bogie in straight track segments, such yaw resistance originates high steering forces and rail damage on curved tracks. A centre plate with low friction at turns and high friction at straight track segments would thus be highly advantageous. In this paper, a centre plate design is proposed which provides a yaw-rotation resistance torque that depends on the bogie-car relative position. Two different designs are considered for that purpose, one that combines a spring-acted centring mechanism with a lower pair kinematics, while the other one involves higher kinematic pairs which should incorporate lateral damping elements. As a result of using an engineering design approach, the higher kinematic pairs-based design is recommended however, the validation of such operational principles, including the introduction of the needed damping, should be configured on the basis of experimental models. T1 - Quasi-static dispersion of dusts for the determination of lower explosion limits of hybrid mixtures N2 - Knowledge of explosion limiting concentration of explosible materials is necessary for the design of explosion protection measures. Currently employed methods of testing MEC of a dust cloud or LEL of a hybrid mixture are based on arbitrary assumptions and possess technical limitations that often lead to values of MEC/LEL, which are unrealistically low or poorly reproducible. This contribution presents an improved method for experimental determination of MEC of a combustible dust cloud or LEL of a flammable gas or hybrid mixture. The new set-up operates under laminar conditions and allows a uniform suspension of dust particles in an open top acrylic glass tube. Dust concentration is measured with the help of infrared sensors installed a few centimeters above and below the ignition source. In order to evaluate the dependence of MEC on flow front velocity, MEC of lycopodium was determined at four flow velocities. The results show that the flow field intensity does not significantly influence the MEC of lycopodium for the flow ranges tested in this work. Moreover, LEL of hybrid mixtures of lycopodium and methane was also tested at flow velocities of 4.7 cm/s, 5.8 cm/s, 7 cm/s and 11 cm/s and compared with the values obtained from other sources. The results suggest that the requirement of high energy pyrotechnical igniter may be relinquished, provided that a truly homogeneous suspension of dust particles could be achieved. Moreover, the effect of relative amount of dust and gas, on the course of ignition and flame propagation in hybrid mixtures at their LEL, was studied by the help of high speed videos. For hybrid mixtures of carbonaceous dusts (like lycopodium) at their LEL, ignition occurs in the gas phase, however, flame propagation is only possible through a two-way interaction of dust and gas during the course of combustion. Here we introduce a protocol that is aimed at exploiting transcriptomic data to study immunity in non-model insect organisms. We provide instructions for an entire workflow, starting with successfiil extraction of insect RNA through to bioinformatic guidelines for the effective analysis of mRNA sequencing data. The RNA extraction procedure is based on TRIzol Reagent and a spin-column clean-up Step. The bioinformatic pipeline is intended to help users identify immune genes from de novo transcriptome data and includes guidelines for conducting differential gene expression analyses on transcriptomic data. The immune gene prediction method is based on inferring protein homologs with HMMERand Blastp and talces Advantage ofthe ImmunoDB database, which is a valuable resource for research on insect immune-related genes and gene families. This project is aiming to clarify and compare the general and local corrosion properties of high entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi and medium entropy alloy CrCoNi in different aqueous environments. The focus lies on the local corrosion processes that result either from microstructural imperfections (inclusions, defects at grain boundaries etc.) in the base material or processing related changes in the microstructure and/or local composition. The corrosion behavior of the alloys was monitored via potentiodynamic polarization experiments and the local corrosion characteristics were further investigated by means of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). Their passivation behavior was analyzed in three different electrolyte systems (NaCl, H2SO4 and NaClO4; c = 0.1M). The characterization of the surface morphology and composition of the passive film was performed by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) and X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. Considering long term corrosion effects, electrochemical work was supported with immersion tests and the analysis of corrosion products by SEM/EDX and XPS depth-profiling. Our results indicate that the medium entropy alloy CrCoNi has a significantly higher corrosion resistance in comparison to the high entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi. Considering the continuity of structural health monitoring information, a framework is developed in this article to support decision-making for structural Health monitoring systems arrangement in the context of structural integrity management, which integrates the concepts of value of information and risk-based inspection planning based on an approach which utilizes a conjugate prior probability distribution for updating of the probabilistic models of structural performances based on structural health Monitoring information. An example considering fatigue degradation of steel structures is investigated to illustrate the application of the proposed framework. The considered example shows that the choice of monitoring variables, the Monitoring period, and the monitoring quality may be consistently optimized by the application of the proposed framework and approach. Finally, discussions and conclusions are provided to clarify the potential benefits of the proposed Framework with a special view to practical applications of structural health monitoring systems. Werkstoffe dieses Legierungssystems weisen eine ausgeprägte Heißrissanfälligkeit auf, weshalb das artgleiche Fügen dieser Materialien, mittels Metallschutzgasschweißen, heutzutage immer noch eine Herausforderung darstellt. Kommerzielle Al-Mg-Si-Schweißdrähte sind am Markt nicht verfügbar. The appearance of the ink employed to write the appellations was significantly darker than that of the surrounding ink. X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) has shown that the light and dark brown inks had similar elemental compositions, but contained different ratios of iron to potassium, which could be explained by the use of different batches of ink. According to some medieval sources, the divine appellations were sometimes filled in during a second stage of writing in the presence of ten men from the Jewish community. In Erfurt 7, the two-stage procedure was only performed in the first 1.5 columns of the original sheets, suggesting it may have been part of a public ceremony inaugurating the writing of the divine names in the scroll. Erfurt 7 emerges from this study not only as a ritual object used for liturgy, but as a rallying point for the Jews of Erfurt to come together as a community to express their reverence for the written form of God’s name. The divine name YHWH ( יהוה ) was written in a smaller script than the surrounding text on three replacement sheets using the same two-stage procedure. The ink used on the replacement sheets contained zinc, which is characteristic of other Erfurt manuscripts as well. This suggests that Erfurt was the place where the scroll was used, cherished and eventually repaired. One fungal pathogen, Ascosphaera apis , affects larvae and causes the disease chalkbrood. A previous genome analysis of As. apis revealed that its genome encodes for RNA interference genes, similar to other fungi and eukaryotes. Here, we examined whether As. apis -targeting double-stranded RNA species could disrupt the germination of As. apis. We observed that when spores were co-incubated with As. apis -targeting dsRNA, fewer spores were activated for germination, suggesting an uptake of exogenous genetic material at the very onset of germination and consequent damage to essential transcripts needed for germination. This status has been reaffirmed in the latest European standard. The consequences in the motorway network due to unsatisfying capability and durabilty of joint sealing systems are unacceptable. In addition, inadequate traffic performance (noise emissions, roll-over comfort) and traffic safety losses in the joint area of concrete pavements are existing challenges. These deficits and weaknesses reflect a demand for joint sealing materials and constructions whose approval requirements take functional aspects into account. Furthermore a sufficient analysis of decisive loads and a practice-oriented method to evaluate the requirements towards performance and durability is still missed. In this contribution decisive loads to German highways are analyzed. The design of test specimen for representative functional testing of joint sealing systems is discussed. The focus is on the geometry of the test specimens and the used concrete mixture. Finally, a new approach for a function-orientated test concept that considers representative load functions is presented. The potential of this approach to validate the durability and capability of various joint sealing systems is also presented using an example. Multi-Modal Microscopy of LiSOCl2 Cells N2 - The ability to track electrode degradation, both spatially and temporally, is fundamental to understand performance loss during operation of lithium batteries. X-ray computed tomography can be used to follow structural and morphological changes in electrodes; however, the direct detection of electrochemical processes related to metallic lithium is difficult due to the low sensitivity to the element. In this work, 4-dimensional neutron computed tomography, which shows high contrast for lithium, is used to directly quantify the lithium diffusion process in spirally wound Li/SOCl2 primary cells. The neutron dataset enables the quantification of the lithium transport from the anode and the accumulation inside the SOCl2 cathode to be locally resolved. Complementarity between the collected neutron and X-ray computed tomographies is shown and by applying both methods in concert we have observed lithium diffusion blocking by the LiCl protection layer and identified all cell components which are difficult to distinguish using one of the methods alone. Auf Grund dessen wird das Bemessungskonzept für Lehmmauerwerk vom Deutschen Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt) voraussichtlich 2023 außer Kraft gesetzt. Ein statischer Nachweis von tragenden Lehmbauten wäre in Deutschland dann ausschließlich mit einer Zustimmung im Einzelfall (ZiE) oder vorhabenbezogener Bauartgenehmigung (vBg) möglich. Beides ist mit erheblichem Mehraufwand und höheren Kosten verbunden, was für den Lehmmauerwerksbau einen entscheidenden Nachteil im Vergleich zum konventionellen Mauerwerksbau darstellt. Um eine unkomplizierte Praxisanwendung von Lehmmauerwerk zu ermöglichen, werden innerhalb eines Forschungsvorhabens, welches von der Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), dem Institut für Massivbau der Technischen Universität Darmstadt sowie dem Ingenieurbüro ZRS durchgeführt wird, auf Basis der Produktnormen für Lehmsteine und Lehmmauermörtel Grundlagen für ein aktualisiertes Bemessungskonzept entwickelt. Im Rahmen des Projekts wird ebenfalls untersucht, inwiefern die Bemessungsregeln nach den vereinfachten Berechnungsmethoden für unbewehrtes Mauerwerk gemäß DIN EN 1996-3 / NA auf den Lehmmauerwerksbau übertragbar sind. Falls eine Anwendung des normativen Nachweisverfahrens bei Lehmmauerwerk möglich ist, wäre zukünftig eine Aufnahme von Lehmsteinen und Lehmmauermörtel in den nationalen Anhang des Eurocode 6 denkbar, was eine bedeutsame Erweiterung des Anwendungsbereichs von Lehmmauerwerk zur Folge hätte. Diverse wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen konnten zeigen, dass bemessungsrelevante Festigkeits- und Verformungseigenschaften von Lehmmauerwerksbaustoffen stark von der vorherrschenden Materialfeuchte abhängen, welche im hygroskopischen Wassergehaltsbereich im Wesentlichen von der relativen Luftfeuchte (RLF) bestimmt wird. Auch die Zwischenergebnisse des laufenden Forschungsvorhabens zur Entwicklung eines Bemessungskonzepts für Lehmmauerwerk ergaben eine deutlich erkennbare Abhängigkeit zwischen der Materialfeuchte und den relevanten Festigkeits- und Verformungseigenschaften. Eine detaillierte Kenntnis des feuchteabhängigen Materialverhaltens von Lehmsteinen, -mörtel und -mauerwerk ist zwingend erforderlich, um ein konsistentes und zuverlässiges Bemessungskonzept für Lehmmauerwerk zu entwickeln. Im Rahmen des laufenden Forschungsprojektes werden deshalb umfangreiche Versuche zum Drucktragverhalten von Lehmsteinen und -mörtel sowie Lehmmauerwerk nach Konditionierung bei unterschiedlichen RLF durchgeführt und analysiert. Weiterhin werden auf Basis der experimentellen Ergebnisse numerische Modelle kalibriert, welche die detaillierte Analyse der Biegedrucktragfähigkeit von Lehmmauerwerk ermöglichen. In diesem Beitrag werden zunächst die bisherigen Zwischenergebnisse bezüglich der experimentell ermittelten feuchteabhängigen Materialkennwerte von Lehmsteinen, -mörtel und -mauerwerk dargelegt. Darauf aufbauend werden numerische Untersuchungen zur Bestimmung der Systemtragfähigkeit von Lehmmauerwerk unter Feuchteeinflusses durchgeführt und erläutert. N2 - The structural design of load-bearing earthen masonry in Germany is based on the Lehmbau Regeln. The verification procedure outlined in these regulations is based on a global safety concept that no longer corresponds to the state of the art from a reliability theory perspective. As a result, the structural design concept for earthen masonry will most likely be discontinued by the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) in 2023. A structural verification of load-bearing earthen buildings would then only be possible in Germany with an approval for individual cases (ZiE) or a project-related permit type (vBg). Both methods are associated with considerable additional work and higher costs, which is a decisive disadvantage for earthen masonry construction compared to conventional masonry construction. In order to enable a straightforward practical application of earthen masonry, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), the Institute for Solid Construction of the Technical University of Darmstadt and ZRS Engineers are laying the groundwork for an updated structural design concept based on the product standards for earth blocks and earthen masonry mortar. The project will also investigate the extent to which the design rules based on the simplified calculation methods for unreinforced masonry according to DIN EN 1996-3 / NA can be transferred to earthen masonry construction. If the normative verification procedure can be applied to earthen masonry, it would be conceivable to include earth blocks and earthen masonry mortar in the national appendix of Eurocode 6 in the future, which would result in a significant expansion of the field of application of earthen masonry. Various scientific studies have shown that the strength and deformation properties of earthen masonry building materials relevant to structural design are strongly dependent on the prevailing material moisture level, which is essentially determined by the relative humidity (RH) in the hygroscopic water content range. The interim results of the current research project for the development of a structural design concept for earthen masonry also showed a clearly recognisable dependency between the material moisture level and the relevant strength and deformation properties. Detailed knowledge of the moisture-dependent material behaviour of earth blocks, earthen mortar and masonry is absolutely essential to developing a consistent and reliable structural design concept for earthen masonry. Within the framework of the current research project, extensive tests on the pressure load bearing capacity of earth blocks and earthen mortar as well as earthen masonry after conditioning at different RH levels are therefore being carried out and analysed. Powders or dispersions where 50% (number distribution) of the constituent particles have sizes ≤ 100 nm in at least one dimension are defined as nanomaterials. This creates a need for industrial manufacturers and research or analytical service facilities to reliably characterize potential nanomaterials. Currently, BAM is developing reference nanoparticles, which shall expand the scarce list of worldwide available nano reference materials certified for particle size distribution and will also target other key parameters like shape, structure, porosity or functional properties. In this respect, materials like iron oxide or titanium dioxide are considered as candidates to complement the already available silica, Au, Ag, and polystyrene reference nanoparticles. The thermal decomposition of iron oleate precursors in high boiling organic solvents can provide large quantities of iron oxide nanoparticles that can be varied in size and shape.[1, 2] The presence of oleic acid or other hydrophobic ligands as capping agents ensures stable dispersion in nonpolar solvents. This effect was studied for X2O-ZnO-B2O3 (X = Li, Na, Rb) glasses for silver-glass metallization pastes. Viscosity and the glass transition temperature, Tg, were measured with rotational viscometry and dilatometry. Dried model pastes with 30 vol% LZB, NZB or RZB glass were prepared for sintering studies by means of heating microscopy measuring the silhouette area shrinkage of uniaxially pressed powder compacts during heating at 5 K/min. For comparison, the silhouette area shrinkage of pure glass and silver powder compacts were determined. Glass-silver wetting was investigated during heating of bulk glass cylinders placed on silver substrates. Glass RZB turned out to have the lowest viscosity among the glasses under study. Its glass transformation temperature, Tg, was found at 444 °C and it caused the lowest sintering onset for its glass and paste powder compacts. Slightly increased values of Tg were found for NZB and LZB (468 °C and 466 °C, respectively) and a slightly retarded sintering was found for both paste powder compacts. These results indicate that liquid phase sintering of silver-glass pastes under air atmosphere is mainly influenced by glass viscosity. T1 - Tailoring the FeO/SiO2 Ratio in Electric Arc Furnace Slags to Minimize the Leaching of Vanadium and Chromium N2 - Based on recently published research on leaching control mechanisms in electric arc furnace (EAF) slags, it is assumed that a FeO/SiO2 ratio of around one leads to low leached V and Cr concentrations. This ratio influences the mineral phase composition of the slag toward higher amounts of spinel and a lower solubility of calcium silicate phases by suppressing the formation of magnesiowuestite and highly soluble calcium silicate phases. To evaluate this hypothesis, laboratory and scaled up tests in an EAF pilot plant were performed on slag samples characterized by elevated V and Cr leaching and a high FeO/SiO2 ratio. Prior to the melting experiments, the optimum FeO/SiO2 ratio was calculated via FactSageTM. In the melting experiments, the ratio was adjusted by adding quartz sand, which also decreased the basicity (CaO/SiO2) of the slag. As a reference, remelting experiments without quartz sand addition were conducted and additionally, the influence of the cooling rate of the slag was examined. The remelted (without quartz sand) and the remelted modified slags (with quartz sand) were analyzed chemically and mineralogically and the leaching behavior was investigated. The modification of the slags yielded a minimized release of V and Cr, supporting the hypothesis that the FeO/SiO2 ratio influences the mineralogy and the leaching behavior. Since the matrices are semi-crystalline thermoplastics, the influence of cooling rate on the strength is statistically evaluated. While the 0° tensile strength is found to be independent of the cooling rate, the 90° tensile strength is strongly influenced by the matrix type and cooling rate. The matrix modulus increases as the cooling rate is decreased; the degree of crystallinity also increases. The matrix residual stress, interfacial shear strength, and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness are also found to depend on the cooling rate, with the trends different for different matrices. However, the complex morphology of such catalysts constitutes a challenge even for modern analytical techniques. Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) is a versatile method for studying material properties by using appropriate models (e.g. film thickness, optical and electronic properties). The fact that the material properties cannot be taken directly from the measured spectra, the developed models have to be validated. In a first step, the model for the ellipsometric fit studies of a calcination series of mesoporous iridium oxide films (300 – 600 °C) was investigated and validated with respect to their material properties. Im vorliegenden Forschungsvorhaben wurden grundlegende Untersuchungen zur schweißtechnischen Verarbeitung eines LTT-Zusatzwerkstoffes durchgeführt. Dies beinhaltet die Sicherstellung der Schweißbarkeit sowie die Charakterisierung der Verbindungseigenschaften. Untersuchungen zur Schweißeignung machten deutlich, dass ein sicherer Einsatz in dem für hochfeste Stähle zur Verfügung stehenden Arbeitsfenster möglich ist. Der verwendete LTT-Zusatz auf Cr-Ni-Basis lässt sich mit hoher Nahtgüte fügen. Auch die mechanischen Eigenschaften erlauben den Einsatz im Bereich hochfester Stähle mit einer Streckgrenze von 960 MPa. Entwicklungspotential gibt es hinsichtlich der Zähigkeit. Die in dieser Arbeit erreichten Kerbschlagwerte liegen deutlich unter denen kommerziell verfügbarer konventioneller Schweißgüter. Die Untersuchungen belegen, dass der Effekt der martensitischen Phasenumwandlung im gesamten Schweißgut zum Tragen kommt. Die angestrebten hohen Druckeigenspannungen finden sich vornehmlich im Schweißgutinnern. Im weiteren Vorgehen wurden Schwingfestigkeitsuntersuchungen an den Stählen S355J2 und S960Q unter Verwendung konventioneller Zusatzwerkstoffe im Vergleich zum LTT-Zusatz durchgeführt. Die verwendeten Konstruktionsdetails sind ein Stumpfstoß unter Variation der Schweißnahtausführung (DY-Naht und V-Naht), ein Kreuzstoß mit HV-Naht sowie ein Überlappstoß mit einseitig und beidseitig geschweißter Kehlnaht. Weitergehend wurde eine bauteilähnliche Probe (die Längssteife) untersucht, bei der der LTT-Zusatzwerkstoff als zusätzliche Schweißlage aufgebracht wurde. Neben der Schwingfestigkeit wurden die Schweißnähte hinsichtlich der Eigenspannungen, der Eigenspannungsstabilität im Schwingversuch sowie metallografisch charakterisiert. Eine generell positive Wirkung des LTT-Zusatzwerkstoffes im Hinblick auf die Schwingfestigkeitssteigerung kann nicht bestätigt werden. Teilweise ist eine Steigerung der Schwingfestigkeit bei Substitution konventioneller Zusatzwerkstoffe zu beobachten, teilweise zeigt sich kein Effekt. Ursächlich hierfür ist die bei manchen Stoßformen mangelnde Steifigkeit quer zur Schweißnaht, die zur Ausbildung hoher Druckeigenspannungen infolge Phasenumwandlung notwendig wäre. Die bauteilähnliche Längssteife bestätigt allerdings das grundlegende Potential der LTT-Zusatzwerkstoffe bei Vorliegen hinreichender Steifigkeit. A partial implementation of this method in a custom program was developed for use in research focused on crack quantification in Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR)-sensitive concrete aggregates. During the CT image processing, a series of image analyses tailored for detecting specific, individual crack-like characteristics were completed. The results of these analyses were then “fused” in order to identify crack-like objects within the images with much higher accuracy than that yielded by any individual image analysis procedure. The results of this strategy demonstrated the success of the program in effectively identifying crack-like structures and quantifying characteristics, such as surface area and volume. The results demonstrated that the source of aggregate has a very significant impact on the amount of internal cracking, even when the mineralogical characteristics remain very similar. River gravels, for instance, were found to contain significantly higher levels of internal cracking than quarried stone aggregates of the same mineralogical type. Moreover, high quality weld joints are achievable thanks to a stronger automatization degree and better repeatability of the process. A further advantage of the laser beam welding is a manufacturing of parts with very low distortion according to much lower heat input, so that rework amount can be reduced significantly. Nevertheless, there are still some unresolved problems limiting the range of application of the technology in part manufacturing within ship building industry, restricted by development and application of new materials or new design of ship vessels. The present contribution deals with some novel aspects of laser beam welding technology allowing to widen this range significantly. One of the possibilities is to increase the weld seam thickness for single pass laser or laser-hybrid welding is to apply contactless EM-support system based on generation of the Lorentz force counteracting the liquid metal drop out. Also, application of laser-hybrid welding technology for welding novel materials like cold resistant steel X8Ni9 used for construction of LNG tanks brings technological and design advantages comparing to conventional welding technologies by using of a similar alloyed filler wire instead of expensive Ni-based filler material. Their failure heavily impairs the serviceability and the operational safety. Consequently, knowledge of the failure behavior under static and cyclic loads is of great interest to estimate the operational strength and to compare the performance of different materials. Ideally, the damage evolution under operational load is determined with in-situ non-destructive testing techniques. Here, we report on in-situ synchrotron X-ray imaging of tensile stress induced cracks in carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) due to inter fiber failure. An in-house designed compact-tensile testing machine with a load range up to 15 kN was integrated into the beam path. Since conventional radiographs do not reveal sufficient contrast to distinct cracks due to inter fiber failure and micro cracking from fiber bundles, the Diffraction Enhanced Imaging technique (DEI) is applied in order to separate primary and scattered (refracted) radiation by means of an analyzer crystal. In the laboratory, scanning X-ray refraction topography of CFRP has been applied long before but it comes along with several disadvantages: the long total measuring time hampers real time (in-situ) measurements and the required small beam size hinders end-to-end imaging. The introduced technique overcomes both drawbacks. Imaging and tensile test rig are run unsynchronized at the greatest possible frame rate (0.7 s-1 at 28.8 µm pixel size) and smallest possible strain rate (5.5∙10-4 s-1). For 0°/90° non-crimped fabrics (ncf) the first inter fiber cracks occurred at 380 MPa (strain 0.7 %). Prior to failure at about 760 MPa (strain 2.0 %) we observe the evolution of a nearly equidistant 1 mm grid of cracks running across the entire sample in the fully damaged state before total failure. While many simple and versatile ionization sources have been developed, challenges lay in achieving efficient sample introduction. In previous work, a sample introduction method employing direct current corona discharge (CD) coupled to a surface acoustic wave nebulization (SAWN) device enhanced sampling performance for both polar and nonpolar analytes by up to 4 orders of magnitude. In fact, the SAWN-CD method generated a multiply charged peptide ion signal comparable to that of conventional ESI. Unfortunately, the high cost of the SAWN devices themselves limits their accessibility. Herein, we report on an analogous implementation of CD with an inexpensive ultrasonic nebulizer (USN) on the basis of a commercial room humidifier demonstrating equivalent exemplary performance. We subsequently compare the two methods of SAWN-CD and USN-CD in a screening application of milk for the detection of two antibiotic drugs, ciprofloxacin and ampicillin. Finally, we further investigate the relative softness of these CD-coupled acoustic nebulization methods in comparison to that of ESI using a survival yield study of the thermometer ion nitrobenzylpyridinium.
