TY - CONF A1 - Schartel, Bernhard A1 - Pawlowski, Kristin A1 - Perret, Birgit T1 - Flame retardancy mechanisms in Halogen-Free PC/ABS Blends N2 - For applications such as in electronical engineering and transportation the fire behavior of PC/ABS is a key property and hence the flame retardancy of polycarbonate (bisphenol A)/acrylonitrilebutadienestyrene blends (PC/ABS) is a key challenge. Within the search for halogen-free flame retardants the development of phosphorus-based systems plays an important role. In the last decades aryl phosphates, such as triphenyl phosphate (TPP), resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) (RDP) and bisphenol A bis(diphenyl phosphate) (BDP) were proposed successfully for PC/ABS.1,2 Nowadays, predominantly different systems based on RDP and BDP in combination with poly(tetrafluoroethylene)(PTFE) are used. However, halogen-free flame retarded PC/ABS blends show high growth rates and it is a highly innovative field, which means that several products have been launched to the market in the last 5 – 10 years. In order to invent the next generation of PC/ABS, the scientific understanding of mechanisms and the comprehensive description of the resulting performance is recognized as a possible key towards an aimed or tailored development. AlPi decomposed mainly through the formation of diethylphosphinic acid and aluminium phosphate and influenced the decomposition of the PBT only slightly. AlPi acted mainly through flame inhibition. A halogen-free V-0 PBT/GF material was achieved with a LOI of 44%. Additional charring influenced the flammability. MC decomposed independently of the polymer and showed some fuel dilution effects. T1 - Pyrolysis and fire behaviour of epoxy systems containing a novel 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide-(DOPO)-based diamino hardener N2 - Highly soluble 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide-(DOPO)-based diamino hardener (2), bearing its amino groups directly on the DOPO framework, is investigated with respect to its use as a reactive flame retardant in thermosets. A mechanism for decomposition of the corresponding phosphorus-modified epoxy resin system based on a diglycidylether of bisphenol A DGEBA and 2 (DGEBA/2) is proposed and compared to the systems using DGEBA and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfon (DGEBA/DDS) and to a similar system based on the structurally comparable non-reactive DOPO-based compound (DGEBA/DDS/1). Additive 1 changed the decomposition characteristics of the epoxy resin only slightly and phosphorus was released. Incorporating 2 induces two-step decomposition and most of the phosphorus remains in the residue. Furthermore, the fire behaviour of neat epoxy resin systems and a representative carbon fibre-reinforced composite based on DGEBA, DDS and 2 (DGEBA/DDS/2) were examined and compared to that of the analogous composite systems based on DGEBA/DDS and DGEBA/DDS/1. Based on different flame retardancy mechanisms both the reactive compound 2 and the additive compound 1 improve flammability (increase in LOI >13% and achieving V-1 behaviour) of the epoxy resin and composites. Under forced flaming only the flame inhibition of the additive compound 1 acts sufficiently. Lastly, the superior key mechanical properties of the epoxy resin and composite based on 2 are sketched. Their thermal behavior and pyrolysis are characterized using thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimeter, oscillatory shear rheology, and dynamic mechanical analysis. The flammability is addressed using LOI and UL 94; the fire behavior, with a cone calorimeter using different irradiation. With increasing MWNT content the storage modulus is increased (10-20%) and melt viscosity increases by several orders of magnitude, particularly for low shear rates. The melt flow, dripping, and deformation during fire are hindered, which influences UL 94 and cone calorimeter results. The peak heat release rate is reduced up to 40-50% due to an improved barrier for small amounts (2 wt%) of MWNT and for low irradiation, whereas the effect is reduced for increasing irradiation and nearly vanishes for increasing filling. Adjuvant but also deleterious mechanisms result in the complex dependency on the MWNT content. Significant flame retardancy effects are specific and limited to only some fire properties. This study allows the materials' potential for implementation in different fire scenarios and tests to be assessed and provides insight into active mechanisms. Other activities refer to inter-laboratory comparisons for selected layer/substrate systems and analytical methods including ellipsometry [4] and the development of combined standards for thickness d and step height h [5]. Generally, precision of ellipsmetry in terms of raw data Ψ and Δ meets the major demands for all ellipsometric principles (RPE, RAE, PME, RCE, NE). As a result, fingerprint capabilty is al-most perfect for various layer/substrate systems. However, this is not true for accuracy in terms of physical quantities such as thickness d, optical (n, k) and dielectric constans (ε1, ε2,) as modelling is required. Hence, the layer/substrate and material dependent validation of models is nowadays a key issue. In contrast to the sub-nanometer sensi-tivity in vertical direction, the effective lateral resolution of almost all ellipso-metric principles except for imaging null ellipsometry is rather poor, usually be-yond 100 µm. Hence, nanometer-scaled homogeneity testing and the measurement of micro- and nanopatterned structures is not feasible by standard configurations. With this technique, small amounts of liquid and solid samples can be measured without the need for sample supports or containers, which often limits signal acquisition and can even alter sample properties due to interactions with the support material. We demonstrate that, because of the small sample volume, fluorescence measurements at high concentrations of an organic dye are possible without the limitation of inner-filter effects, which hamper such experiments in conventional, cuvette-based measurements. Furthermore, we show that acoustic levitation of liquid samples provides an experimentally simple way to study distance-dependent fluorescence modulations in semiconductor nanocrystals. A two steps thermal treatment based on 1. mono-incineration of sewage sludge under destruction of organic pollutants and 2. thermochemical treatment of the resulting ashes to remove heavy metals and increase P-bioavailability is suggested by the authors. The process aims at P-fertilisers production from sewage sludge. Seven sewage sludge ashes of different origin and composition and one residue from gasification of sewage sludge were thermochemically treated. The raw ashes were mixed with a chlorine donor (e.g. MgCl2) and thermally treated in a gas tight lab-scale rotary furnace. The distributions of the heavy metals between solid and gas phase were determined. The heavy metals concentrations of the treated ashes matched the legislative limits in most cases. The products from thermochemical treatment are suited raw materials for P-fertiliser production. Newly formed U-phosphate minerals were detected by ESEM/EDX and XRD in samples with high U content indicating either a dissolution-precipitation mechanism or sorption onto the apatite surface followed by alteration of the structure. Therefore, the internal shear strength of the GCL depends on the strength of reinforcing fiber bundles or yarns and their anchoring strength in the cover and carrier geotextiles. When used on long and steep slopes and covered with thick soil layers, the GCL is permanently exposed to a combined action of compressive and shear stress. Such load conditions are characteristic for landfill covers and the slope stability of the overall cover system in the long run strongly depends on the long-term internal shear strength of the GCL. A new test method was developed to study this long-term shear behavior. The focus was not only on creep, as it is normally done, but on aging effects. The shear test devices allow the measurement of creep curves and times-to-failure at elevated temperatures in different media (tap water and de-ionized water). In this publication, the main findings of the experiments on needle-punched GCLs with and without thermal treatment are summarized. Tap water as a test medium was essential to ensure sodium to calcium ion exchange in the bentonite layer. Under this condition extremely long test durations without failure were achieved. Sliding failure occurred when de-ionized water was used. Two failure modes were observed: brittle failure of the GCLs with thermal treatment and slow disentanglement of fiber bundles for untreated GCLs. Short-term shear strength (e.g. peel strength) is unrelated to the actual long-term shear strength, i.e. to the times-to-failure achieved in long-term shear strength test. Hence, short-term shear strength alone will not provide reliable dimensioning data for product design and choice of resins. Therefore, the often suggested approach, namely, restriction to short-term tests only and application of factors of safety, is challenged by these results. The aim of this work is to probe the possibilities of X-ray fluorescence with high energy synchrotron radiation (SR-XRF) at the BAMline at BESSY II to determine the concentration of Pt in ancient gold alloys. A HP-Ge detector was used to measure the Pt K-lines excited with an incident energy of 79.5 keV. Data processing was done by subtraction of a Pt free gold standard spectrum from the spectrum of the sample. Depending on the sample composition, the MDL ranges between 40 and 90 ppm. The first results obtained for a small set of gold alloys of different thickness, size and composition showed that high energy SR-XRF is a significant method for the non-destructive determination of Pt in gold. Electrochemical methods, e.g. potential mapping, provide information whether the steel reinforcement is still passive or depassivation has been initiated. By applying such techniques no information on the type of corrosion, its extent and distribution of corrosion products is available. Particular the corrosion progress is a significant problem. Especially in the case of element corrosion in reinforced concrete structures, the development at the anode can not be separated into corrosion damage causing by element corrosion or self-corrosion. Until now also in laboratory tests it is impossible to collect such information without destroying specimens after electrochemical testing was performed place. To overcome this problem it was tried to study the steel surface within the mortar specimens by X-ray tomography (CT). Within the scope of these investigations it could be shown, that X-ray tomography is suitable to make corrosion pits visible which are embedded in a mortar with a cover thickness of about 35 mm. In this publication the corrosion damage of reinforced steel is documented timedependent by X-ray tomography. The objectives of this study are the more recent organic pigments typically present in paintings and other art works from the 20th century. More than 20 organic synthetic pigments from different chemical classes could be identified by Raman spectroscopy using different excitation wavelengths (457.9, 476.5, 487.9, 514.5, 632.8, and 1064 nm). To evaluate the performance for real paint samples, varying paint mixtures of the Hansa Yellow pigment PY 3 and the binding medium Mowilith, a polyvinyl acetate (PVAC) compound, were characterised; PY 3 was determined at a 1 wt% level in the binder. In addition, commercial tube paints containing the quinacridone violet PV 19 were studied. The pigment was clearly identified in all of these more complex oil and acrylic paints. Finally, alizarin (PR 83) and a green copper phthalocyanine pigment (PG 7) could unambiguously be identified by Raman microscopy in the painting Woman with mandolin in yellow and red of Max Beckmann dating 1950. The discovery of a red naphthol AS pigment by Raman spectroscopy in a sample from the Three field workers by Georg Baselitz (1964/1965) demonstrated that in some cases complementary chromatographic methods are needed for a comprehensive identification of the organic pigments. Hierarchical cluster analysis of spectra from fresh pollen samples of 15 species partly related at the genus level and family level indicates separation of species based on the complete Raman spectral signature and yields classification in accord with biological systematics. Wolfbeis, T1 - Need for and metrological approaches towards standardization of fluorescence measurements from the view of national metrology institutes N2 - The need for standardization in fluorescence measurements to improve quality assurance and to meet regulatory demands is addressed from the viewpoint of National Metrology Institutes (NMIs). Classes of fluorescence standards are defined, including instrument calibration standards for the determination and correction of instrument bias, application-specific standards based on commonly used fluorescent labels, and instrument validation standards for periodic checks of instrument performance. The need for each class of standard is addressed and on-going efforts by NMIs and others are described. Several certified reference materials (CRMs) that have recently been developed by NMIs are highlighted. These include spectral correction standards, developed independently by both NIST and BAM (Germany), and fluorescence intensity standards for flow cytometry, developed by NIST. In addition, future activities at both institutes are addressed such as the development of day-to-day intensity standards. In the ablative regime close to the ablation threshold, transient surface reflectivity patterns are observed by fs microscopy on a ps to ns time scale as a consequence of the complex spatial density structure of the ablating material (dynamic Newton fringes). At higher fluences, exceeding six times the ablation threshold, optical breakdown causes another, more violent ablation regime, which reduces the energy deposition depth along with the time of significant material removal. As a consequence, ablation lasts longer in a ring-shaped region around the region of optical breakdown. This leads to the formation of a crater profile with a central protrusion. In the melting regime below the ablation threshold, the melting dynamics of indium phosphide has been quantified and subsequent superficial amorphization has been observed upon solidification on the ns time scale leading to amorphous layer thicknesses of the order of a few tens of nanometers. In PBT/GF, dosages of 13-20% of the halogen-free flame retardant aluminum phosphinate or aluminum phosphinate in combination with MC fulfill the requirements for electrical engineering and electronics applications (UL 94 = V-0; LOI > 42%), whereas the use of the same amount of zinc phosphinate or zinc phosphinate in combination with MC does not improve the fire behavior satisfactorily (UL 94 = HB; LOI = 27-28%). The performance under forced flaming conditions (cone calorimeter) is quite similar for both of the metal phosphinates. The use of aluminum and zinc salts results in similar flame inhibition predominantly due to the release of the phosphinate compounds in the gas phase. Both metal phosphinates and MC interact with the polymer changing the decomposition characteristics. However, part of the zinc phosphinate vaporizes as a complete molecule. Because of the different decomposition behavior of the metal salts, only the aluminum phosphinate results in a small amount of thermally stable carbonaceous char. In particular, the aluminum phosphinate-terephthalate formed is more stable than the zinc phosphinate-terephthalate. The small amount of char has a crucial effect on the thermal properties and mechanical stability of the residue and thus the flammability. A1 - Rademann, K. T1 - Tracing Coffee Tabletop Traces N2 - Crystallization processes under different conditions are of fundamental interest in chemistry, pharmacy, and medicine. Therefore, we have studied the formation of micro- and nanosized crystals using water-caffeine (1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione) solutions under ambient conditions as a relevant model system. When droplets of an aqueous caffeine solution evaporate and eventually dry on surfaces (glass, polystyrene, and polyester), stable “coffee tabletop” rings with a perimeter of typically 3 mm are formed after 20 to 50 min. Using a micro focus X-ray beam available at the BESSY µSpot-beamline, the fine structure of different caffeine needles can be distinguished. Unexpectedly, both crystal modifications (α- and β-caffeine) are present, but locally separated in these rings. Furthermore, AFM studies reveal the presence of even smaller particles on a nanometer length scale. To eliminate influences of surface irregularities from the crystallization process, acoustic levitation of liquid samples was employed. Such levitated droplets are trapped in a stable position and only surrounded by air. The solvent in an ultrasonically levitated drop evaporates completely, and the resulting crystallization of caffeine was followed in situ by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. In this case, the diffraction pattern is in accordance with pure α-caffeine and does not indicate the formation of the room temperature polymorph β-caffeine. Hence, our investigations open new vistas that may lead to a controlled formation of cocrystals and novel polymorphs of micro- and nanocrystalline materials, which are of relevance for fundamental studies as well as for pharmaceutical and medical applications. T1 - Gold Nanolenses Generated by Laser Ablation-Efficient Enhancing Structure for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Analytics and Sensing N2 - Nanoaggregates formed by metal spheres of different radii and interparticle distances represent finite, deterministic, self-similar systems that efficiently concentrate optical fields and act as “nanolenses”. Here we verify experimentally the theoretical concept of nanolenses and explore their potential as enhancing nanostructures in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Self-similar structures formed by gold nanospheres of different sizes are generated by laser ablation from solid gold into water. These nanolenses exhibit SERS enhancement factors on the order of 109. The “chemically clean” preparation process provides several advantages over chemically prepared nanoaggregates and makes the stable and biocompatible gold nanolenses potent enhancing structures for various analytical and sensing applications.
