T1 - Hierarchical composites reinforced with carbon nanotube grafted fibers: The potential assessed at the single fiber level N2 - The feasibility of reinforcing conventional carbon fiber composites by grafting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the fiber surface has been investigated. Carbon nanotubes were grown on carbon fibers using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Iron was selected as the catalyst and predeposited using the incipient wetness technique before the growth reaction. The morphology of the products was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which showed evidence of a uniform coating of CNTs on the fiber surface. Contact angle measurements on individual fibers, before and after the CNT growth, demonstrated a change in wettability that can be linked to a change of the polarity of the modified surface. Model composites based on CNT-grafted carbon fibers/epoxy were fabricated in order to examine apparent interfacial shear strength (IFSS). A dramatic improvement in IFSS over carbon fiber/epoxy composites was observed in the single fiber pull-out tests, but no significant change was shown in the push-out tests. The different IFSS results were provisionally attributed to a change of failure mechanism between the two types of tests, supported by fractographic analysis. In search of clues for a dose-response relation - i.e. upon a connection between the emission rate of SO2 and NOx on one hand and the degree of damage to mainly plaster having a lime component on the other - it has been of interest to what extent their structural characteristics including pore space are modified and so consequently also physico-technical properties and chemical composition. For determining corresponding criteria, a widely diversified spectrum of test methods such as to obtain data concerning porosity and moisture transport, mechanical behaviour, and chemistry as well is available. A description of the manufacture of plate-shaped rendering specimens with lime putty, industrially hydrated lime and dolomitic hydrate (the last two also having a cement admixture) and also hydraulic lime as binding agents is included. First deposition velocity and absorption rate for SO2 were determined in laboratory tests on these materials in dry and moist states. After their exposure on outdoor racks at six locations in the Berlin region with differing SO2 atmospheric contents over at least 5 years, the samples of course show timedependent modifications of chemical and physical qualities which are especially reflected in the form of profiles of structure, strength and concentration, e.g. for sulphate. Local climatic differences, however, partly exert a greater influence on material than emissions. Similar investigations were performed on samples of comparable composition exposed 4 and 17 years. But the real surprise is furnished by the renderings’ behaviour depending upon orientation and upon height at a building. Since weathering behaviour and moisture transport (absorption, storage, release) are directly interdependent, further criteria are necessary for a critical assessment of a plasters’ pore structure. Starting from sands, plasters were characterized. The structural parameters were lastly influenced by the respective contents of sand, binder and mixing water. These results and those gained from bricks naturally find their expression in masonry sections manufactured there from, and above all in their capillary and evaporative behaviours, and also when applying different test liquids. The material combination was α-alumina as upper specimen and steel 100Cr6 as lower specimen. For each of the contact geometries 5 independent measurements were carried out and evaluated independently. The agreement between the single results of coefficient of friction and the coefficient of system wear as well as between the different groups and conditions are good. Largest scatter of the results were found in the dry air regime where both friction and wear depend strongly on the relative humidity. However, comparison of the absolute values of the coefficient of wear between the ball on disk contact geometry on one side and the 2 crossed cylinder contact geometries on the other side reveals a significant difference in that the ball on disk results are lower by about a factor of two. The results document also a high degree of repeatability of single wear tests. N2 - The data book "Safety Characteristic Data" is published in two volumes. In the first volume "Flammable Liquids and Gases", the safety characteristics of pure substances in mixture with air have been published. In Volume 2 "Explosion Regions of Gas Mixtures", the properties of gaseous fuel/inert gas/oxidiser mixtures are in the centre of interest. For the first time, complete data sets of the explosion regions of gaseous mixtures are available in a printed format as needed by authorities and industry. Dangerous explosive compositions can be detected by such explosion diagrams. Therefore, they are the basis for primary explosion protection, e. g. to prevent explosive mixtures by inertisation. The explosion diagram data sets mainly come from the CHEMSAFE database, 2008. This database is published by Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e. V. (Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, DECHEMA), Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, BAM) and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). It contains evaluated safety characteristics. Traditionally, the characteristics of flammable liquids are evaluated by experts of PTB, and those of flammable gases and dusts as well as explosion diagrams by experts at BAM, who is the publisher of this second volume.
