TY - JOUR A1 - Becker, Roland A1 - Koch, Matthias A1 - Lehnik-Habrink, Petra A1 - Nehls, Irene T1 - Quantification of polychlorinated biphenyls in plastic granulates from the recycling of cables - Reference materials and interlaboratory comparison N2 - A procedure for the quantification of the PCB marker congeners 28, 52, 101, 138, 153, 180 in plastic waste form the recycling of cables in the range of content between 0.1 mg kg-1 and 20 mg kg-1 was validated. Representative reference materials for laboratory analyses were produced using granulates from different recycling processes. The method development included aspects of grinding, sieving, homogenising as well as the comparison of extraction methods and chromatographic conditions. The validated procedure foresees grinding of the technical sample to an upper particle size limit of 0.50 mm followed by extraction with an unpolar solvent such as n-hexane and gas chromatographic determination. LOD and LOQ for individual congeners ranged between 0.01 mg kg-1 and 0.08 mg kg-1. Electron capture detection (ECD) and mass selective detection (MS) were equivalent if chromatographic conditions were appropriately selected. The application of MS was advantageous in presence of significant amounts of interfering components which have been found in some cables. Three reference materials containing the marker congeners in the range of 0.1 mg kg-1–5 mg kg-1 were submitted to a final validation intercomparison with 23 selected field laboratories using the developed method. Relative reproducibility standard deviations varied between 15% and 33%. Biphenyl-Type Sensor Molecules with Protonation-Induced Anti-Energy Gap Rule Behavior N2 - On the basis of biphenyl (b) type molecules bpb-R substituted with a 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine acceptor (bp) and either amino-type donor receptors (R = dimethylamino (DMA), A15C5 = monoaza-15-crown-5) or nonbinding substituents (R = CF3, H, OMe) of various donor strengths, we developed a family of charge transfer (CT) operated monofunctional and bifunctional fluorescent sensors for protons and metal ions. These molecules are designed to communicate the interaction of an analyte with the acceptor and the donor receptor differing in basicity and cation selectivity by clearly distinguishable spectral shifts and intensity modulations in absorption and in emission as well as in fluorescence lifetime. From the dependence of the fluorescence spectra, fluorescence quantum yields, and fluorescence lifetimes of bpb-R on solvent polarity and proton concentration, the photophysics of bpb-R and their protonated analogues can be shown to be governed by the relaxation to a CT state of forbidden nature and by the switching between anti-energy and energy gap law type behaviors. This provides the basis for analytically favorable red shifted emission spectra in combination with comparatively high fluorescence quantum yields. Accordingly, bpb-H and bpb-OMe are capable of ratiometric emission signaling of protons. bpb-DMA reveals a protonation-induced ON-OFF-ON switching of its emission. For this purpose three ways are selected, (i) oxygen plasma treatment followed by wet-chemical reduction of O functional groups to OH groups, (ii) plasma bromination for introducing C - Br groups and (iii) coating by deposition of thin plasma (co-) polymerized layers of functional groups-bearing monomers with OH, NH2, COOH, epoxy etc. functionalities. Subsequently, these groups were used as anchoring points for chemical grafting of spacer molecules, oligomers, prepolymers, fluorescent labels, ionic and nucleic acid residues, employing different chemical routes. The yield in monosort functional groups at polymer surfaces ranged from 10–14 (process i), 20–40 (process ii) and 18–31 groups per 100 C atoms (process iii) as measured by XPS after derivatization. The consumption of functional groups amounted to 40–90% of all functionalities present at the surface and depended on the dimensions of grafted molecules. For infinitely variably tuning the number of functional groups process iii was performed as copolymerization of a functional group-carrying comonomer with a non-functionalized (“chain-extending”) comonomer. This first set of traceable fluorescence standards, which links fluorescence measurements to the spectral radiance scale in the spectral range of 300–770 nm and has been optimized for spectrofluorometers, can be employed for different measurement geometries and can be adapted to different fluorescence techniques with proper consideration of the underlying measurement principles. The balance between the molar fractions of the nucleobase monomer (leading to intermolecular H-bonding) and DMA (soluble moiety in chloroform) in the polymer chains was found to be the parameter that principally influences the self-organization. DMA-rich copolymers are molecularly soluble in chloroform, whereas nucleobase-rich copolymers are insoluble in this solvent. Copolymers possessing an equimolar comonomer composition self-assemble into micrometer-sized particles physically cross-linked by intermolecular H-bonds (either thymine-thymine or adenine-adenine interactions, depending on the studied copolymer). Nevertheless, when mixed together, thymine- and adenine-based colloids fuse into thermodynamically stable microspheres cross linked by adenine-thymine interactions. T1 - Maghemite Nanoparticles Protectively Coated with Poly(ethylene imine) and Poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(glutamic acid) N2 - Superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (SPIO) of maghemite were prepared in aqueous solution and subsequently stabilized with polymers in two layer-by-layer deposition steps. The first layer around the maghemite core is formed by poly(ethylene imine) (PEI), and the second one is formed by poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(glutamic acid) (PEO-PGA). The hydrodynamic diameter of the particles increases stepwise from Dh = 25 nm (parent) via 35 nm (PEI) to 46 nm (PEI plus PEO-PGA) due to stabilization. This is accompanied by a switching of their -potentials from moderately positive (+28 mV) to highly positive (+50 mV) and finally slightly negative (-3 mV). By contrast, the polydispersity indexes of the particles remain constant (ca. 0.15). Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed that the iron oxide, which forms the core of the particles, is only present as Fe(III) in the form of superparamagnetic maghemite nanocrystals. The magnetic domains and the maghemite crystallites were found to be identical with a size of 12.0 ± 0.5 nm. The coated maghemite nanoparticles were tested to be stable in water and in physiological salt solution for longer than 6 months. In contrast to novel methods for magnetic nanoparticle production, where organic solvents are necessary, the procedure proposed here can dispense with organic solvents. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) experiments on living rats indicate that the nanoparticles are useful as an MRI contrast agent. T1 - Effect of grain refinement on the strength and corrosion of AZ31 magnesium alloy following severe plastic deformation N2 - Gas tungsten arc welds made on wrought magnesium AZ31 plate have been characterized for corrosion in saline solution (3.5% NaCl). Microstructural changes induced by the welding process resulted in different environmental behaviour of each zone (BM-base metal, HAZ-heat affected zone and FZ-fusion zone). The faster kinetics of corrosion in FZ and especially HAZ are attributed to (a) the coarse microstructure, consisting of large grains, and (b) very small amounts of ß-phase in the grain boundaries. Also, hardness traverses have shown that these zones are weaker than the base metal. Based on the significant effect of grain size on strength in magnesium alloys, the weld metal grains have been systematically refined using controlled oscillation during welding, and by adding a grain refiner to the weld pool. Detailed microstructure analyses have been carried out and the relationships between corrosion behaviour, mechanical properties and microstructure (grain refinement and second-phases formation) are highlighted. A1 - Cross, Carl Edward A1 - Böllinghaus, Thomas T1 - Hydrogen trapping in beta-21S titanium alloy N2 - Different characteristics of hydrogen's absorption/desorption behavior and trapping in ß-21S titanium alloy are studied by means of thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). Spectra analysis is supported by data from variety of other experimental techniques, such as LECO hydrogen determinator, XRD and microstructure investigations by means of optic and electronic microscopy. In contrast to many past considerations, the complex process of hydrogen evolution has been found to be significantly affected by the way hydrogen introduction into the alloy. The different trapping sites, as well as phase transformations, have to be considered as the reasons for the different hydrogen evolution behavior.
