N2 - In the past exothermic reactions in the industrial scale were repeatedly the cause of accidents. Therefore the knowledge of the potential hazards of an exothermic reaction for normal operations as well as for deviations is a precondition for a safe handling of the industrial process. With the release of the technical guide for identification and control of exothermic chemical reactions (“Technische Regel für Anlagensicherheit 410, Erkennen und Beherrschen exothermer chemischer Reaktionen (TRAS 410)“) in Germany 2001 there is a tool available, which is based on the art of safety engineering helps, to identify and to assess hazards and to derive measures to prevent failures. The main focus is pointed to the thermal process safety. A higher potential hazard possess exothermic reactions, in which, like in the present case, organic peroxides are involved. These type of compounds are well known for their thermal instability. In the thesis a two-phase, semi-batch reaction of tert-Butylhydroperoxide (TBHP) with pivaloyl chloride to tert-Butylperoxypivalate (TBPP) was investigated. Both TBHP, the formed intermediate and TBPP belong to the group of peroxide. The technical guide TRAS 410 was applied to assess the thermal process safety of the TBPP synthesis. The thermal stability of the involved substances was examined with screening methods and the reaction itself was characterised by calorimetric measurements. The technical application of the 100-Kelvin rule led to a limit temperature Texo of -36 °C, where a safe handling of all substances is firmed. Practically the process is not realisable at this temperature. Due to additionally studies and the determination of the activation energy and the Arrhenius factor of the decomposition of TBPP the lowest process temperature was set at 0 °C. As maximum temperature 20 °C was fixed. In line with the defined operating conditions the normal mode is assessed to be safe. The reaction is controlled by the feed velocity. No accumulation appeared. Because of a narrow gap between process temperature and the temperature, were the decomposition of TBPP starts considerably, only small deviations of process conditions are permitted. Otherwise the decomposition will run uncontrolled with temperature raise and gas production, definitely resulting in exceeding design limits of the process. To carry out the process several preventive measures like control engineering techniques have to be installed. Finally scale-up using dimensionless parameter is done to determine minimum and maximum reaction volume and feed time. Beside the so considered anisotropy also the grain as well as phase boundaries are of extreme importance for a whole string of properties, e.g. the strength of a material. On the example of the interface between fcc and bcc iron the discovered and derived models are discussed. Although the common models are based on the crystal lattice description, the atomic configuration on the interface is analysed. Since experimentally a wide spread of orientations data appears the consideration of the frequency distribution is proposed to find at least the main orientation relationship between fcc and bcc. High-indexed pole figures as well as the Euler subspace are introduced in order to increase the accuracy and to compare different measurements. For the sake of simplicity EBSD measurements on iron meteorites are used since they commonly consist of large fcc single crystals which transformed to a low and very specific number of bcc grains. This is due to the possibility of ion channeling along preferred crystal directions which effects the depth at which interaction between ions and specimen atoms takes place. As a result of channeling emission of ion induced secondary electrons (iiSE) and secondary ions (SI) as well as the sputter rate decreases. It has been found that the competitive grain growth in a starter block is determined by the crystallographic factor: rapidly growing grains with the axial orientation close to the [001] direction dominate in this part of the casting. For the competitive grain growth in a helicoidal separator, the geometric factor (the position of a grain at the input of the separator) is also important. The results obtained suggest that an appropriate geometry of the single-grain selector was chosen. In addition, the distribution of the orientations of columnar grains obtained by electron backscattered diffraction, can be used for approximate estimation of the yield of suitable (i.e., with the deviation of the axial orientation from the [001] direction within a specified tolerance) single-crystal blades. T1 - EBSD study of corrosion fatigue of austenitic-ferritic steel N2 - Fatigue crack propagation investigations have been performed in austenitic-ferritic duplex stainless steel H22N5M3 in air and during hydrogen charging, using various frequencies of loading. Strong differences of crack propagation velocity depending on the test conditions were noticed. Lower frequency with applied hydrogen charging led to the huge increase of crack propagation velocity compared to the tests performed in air. To understand such a behaviour in each case and characterize crack mode, the samples were observed using electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD). It was shown that in air, the fatigue crack propagation involved plastic deformation and the resulting cracks had ductile character. The presence of hydrogen led to more brittle mode of cracking. This effect was also connected with frequency of loading: lower frequency, which assured longer time for hydrogen-crack tip interaction, resulted in the highest crack propagation velocity and the brittle cracking mode with lower amount of plastic deformation. The performed observations indicated that the path of the crack went mostly transgranularly through both austenite and ferrite phases. Phase and grain boundaries were not the preferred paths for crack propagation. Unanimously topography formation and development in friction contacts are regarded of highest importance for understanding and modelling friction processes. The frequently found running in behaviour of sliding contacts is—aside from the build up of reaction and transfer layers-at least partly caused by the topography development due to friction processes until a stable equilibrium state is reached. Experimental results of friction and topography measurements are presented which demonstrate the mutual modification of friction and contact topography. A special experimental set up with an AFM allowed to correlate the measured friction forces with the contact position and the topography at this point. In this way, friction force transitions and changes can be assigned to topography changes due to abrasion, adhesion and wear particle agglomeration. Contact surfaces with artificial regular structures have been prepared to avoid problems with topography and friction correlation due to the statistical nature of roughness on technical contact surfaces. The friction effects of roughness were simulated by etched ditches of defined width, depth and distance on silicon or metal surfaces. This allowed to explain the mutual influences of topography and friction. The effect of a single ‘asperity’ and of the 'roughness structures' could be demonstrated. Topography measurements with an AFM correlated with the friction force could help to understand friction changes without changing any parameter. The LiCl sensor has also a low uncertainty but exhibit a systematic deviation to higher values of dew-point. Capacitive polymer sensors can indicate also a dew-point, even down to -70 °C and have an uncertainty of about 1 to 2 K. The oxide sensor works in the dew-point range of -10 to 20°C and has a signal what exponential decreases with increasing gas pressure up to 10 MPa. T1 - Wear resistant alumina coatings produced by a sol-gel process N2 - Aluminium oxide films were prepared by a dip-coating procedure from solutions of hydrolysed aluminium-tri-sec-butoxide in methoxyethanol on austenitic steel as well as hard metal tools. The heat treatment was performed in an argon atmosphere or vacuum at temperatures up to 1100 °C. Characterisation of the coatings by SEM, showed nearly crack free coatings with a dense morphology which completely cover the substrate. The chemical composition of the coatings was investigated by ESCA, GD-OES and XRD measurements. This analysis detected a multi-layered arrangement of spinel phases, ?- and ?-alumina in the coatings. The scratch test showed sufficient adhesion of the coatings comparable to CVD layers. Pin-on-disc and oscillating sliding tests were carried out on sol–gel coated samples and also on uncovered reference samples. The determined wear rates and friction coefficients showed significant improvement in wear resistance of sol–gel coatings containing a corundum phase. The strong adhesion to the substrates is due to a layered assembly formation and gradient composition of the coating caused by an interdiffusion of metal cations and oxygen in the metal/oxide interface during heat treatment. Recently a new RIT, was equipped with a system that was designed, from the beginning, to employ a combination of these two techniques for non-destructive rail inspection. The eddy current technique has been developed to enable identification and evaluation of rolling contact fatigue (RCF) defects. The ultrasound technique is aimed at measurements in the rail bulk volume, which are not feasible using the eddy current technique. Experience gained from application has shown that clear improvement on rail inspection can be achieved. For example, following DB AG guideline defects which are classified as group 2 using ultrasound testing can be further labeled as "distinguished positions" if for example head checking can be identified in the same position using the eddy current technique i.e. the new technique is capable of identifying two fundamentally different types of defects occurring at the same location. Such defects can then be then classified as Group 1 equivalent according to the DB AG guideline. Furthermore,- problem cases in the past, such as the decision whether a weld or rail joint is present for a fishing table can be reliably determined using additional information from the eddy current technique. In this presentation examples will be provided to demonstrate application. T2 - ECNDT Berlin 2006, 9. Without early recognition systems, defect damage (e.g. cracks) in the rail, will in most cases, increase in size and can eventually lead to fracture of the rail. Special grinding trains are in general use for rail maintenance and are employed to machine down worn rails and prevent surface damage in an early stadium. The company SPENO INTERNATIONAL SA along with the BAM and other partners have integrated an eddy current instrument in the grinding train. The equipment has been developed for detection of Head Check type defects and provides information on defect position and depth. Initial experiments were presented at the DACH-conference 2004 in Salzburg. This system has been continually developed and as will be shown is ready for practical application. The main characteristics of this system are: - 4 channel measurement per rail. - Online monitoring and presentation of the results - Online protocol and after grinding, in reference to defect free control and presentation The actual measuring system and results will be presented. T1 - Estimation of LOC (Limiting Oxygen Concentration) of Fuel-Air-Inert Mixtures at Elevated Temperatures by means of Adiabatic Flame Temperatures N2 - The limiting values of fuel concentration in a flammable fuel–air mixture are the LEL (lower explosion limit) and UEL (upper explosion limit). The addition of an inert component to fuel/air mixtures determines the increase of LEL and decrease of UEL, until these values finally merge at the inerting point. The maximum oxygen amount of a non-flammable fuel–air–inert mixture is the LOC (limiting oxygen concentration), an important safety characteristics. The investigation of a comprehensive set of flammability data at elevated temperatures and ambient pressure taken from literature sources was made for systems containing nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water(vapour) as inert components, at 100°, 200° and 250 °C. The adiabatic flame temperatures at LEL (CAFTLEL) and LOC (CAFTLOC) were calculated by taking into account the dissociation of gases within the flame. A linear correlation of CAFTLOC versus CAFTLEL was empirically derived for the examined systems. The slope and intercept of the correlation are dependent on temperature and on nature of the inert gas. The correlation allows the development of a simple procedure for estimating LOC, when the LEL of fuel–air and the equivalence ratio of the fuel–air–inert mixture at the inerting point are known. Knowing the scarce information concerning the flammability of fuel–air–inert mixtures at temperatures higher than ambient, the proposed procedure brings about an useful tool for estimation of LOC. The chemical reaction sub-model includes solid fuel decomposition and the combustion of char, carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The model has been validated against lab-scale self-ignition and smouldering propagation experiments and then applied to predictions of fire scenarios in a lignite coal silo. Predicted reaction temperatures of 550 K and propagation velocities of the smouldering front of about 6 mm/h are in good agreement with experimental values derived from lab-scale experiments. A vertical cylindrical explosion chamber of approximately 100 l volume and a length-to-diameter ratio (l/d) of 4.7 consisting of a steel bottom segment and three glass sections connected by steel flanges was used to perform the experiments. Sixteen small fans evenly distributed within the chamber produced turbulent fluctuations from 0 to 0.45 m/s. A Laser-Doppler-anemometer (LDA) was used to measure the flow and turbulence fields. During the experiments the pressure and in the case of dust explosions the dust concentration were measured. In addition, the flame propagation was observed by a high-speed video camera. A propane/nitrogen/oxygen mixture was used for the gas explosion experiments, while the dust explosions were produced by a cornstarch/air mixture. It turned out that the reduced explosion pressure increased with increasing turbulence intensity. This effect was most pronounced for small vents with low activation pressures, e.g. for bursting disks made from polyethylene foil. In this case, the overpressure at an initial turbulence of 0.45 m/s was twice that for zero initial turbulence. T1 - Fe3+-assisted formation of alpha-Al2O3, starting from sol-gel precursors N2 - The role of Fe3+ ions in the transformations from boehmites and pseudoboehmite xerogels via transition aluminas to corundum was studied here. Especially, the active iron species responsible for the decrease of the temperature of transformation to corundum were looked for. To enable the formation of various Fe3+ and Fe2+ species, samples were subjected to thermal treatments in different atmospheres as well as mechanically activated. Thermal analysis and ESR spectroscopy served to follow the processes and to characterise the resulting products. It was found that (i) isolated Fe3+ ions can indicate local structural changes but have (almost) no influence on the temperature of corundum formation, (ii) the temperature of corundum formation decreases in the result of action of small α-Fe2O3 particles and (iii) during thermal treatments Fe3+ ions are distributed between different phases or precursors thereof: transition aluminas, corundum, Fe2O3, and a Fe3+ pool. Layer thicknesses from below the optical penetration depth to above the thermal diffusion length (60 nm–13 µm) were examined. After correction of the damage-threshold values for the fraction of energy effectively absorbed by the material, the damage threshold was found to increase linearly with the layer thickness, also for film thicknesses below the optical penetration depth of a-C:H. The threshold fluence reached the bulk value for a layer thickness equal to the thermal diffusion length. The thermal diffusion coefficient was obtained from fitting the experimental data. Several phenomena like graphitization, blistering, exfoliation, and ablation were observed for different fluence regimes and film thicknesses. A1 - Frunza, Stefan A1 - Schönhals, Andreas T1 - Molecular dynamics of 4-n-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl in partially filled nanoporous SBA-type molecular sieves N2 - The molecular dynamics of 4-n-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) confined to the nanopores of new SBA-type molecular sieves was investigated in a wide temperature range using broadband dielectric spectroscopy (10-2–109 Hz). One molecular sieve has a hexagonal structure of the pores while the other is a cellular nanoporous material. To explore the extent of surface interaction effects a high and a low filling degree were considered. For the molecular sieves with a high filling degree two relaxation regions were observed: a bulk-like relaxation process related to molecules, which behave as mesophase, located in the centre of the pores. The second relaxation process has a much lower relaxation rate than the former and is assigned to molecules located in a surface layer. The temperature dependence of its relaxation rates follows the Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann law, characteristic for glassy dynamics. For samples with a low filling degree only one relaxation process due to the surface layer was observed. Moreover, especially at the temperatures lower than the melting point of bulk 8CB, its relaxation rate is situated between the characteristic frequencies of the two relaxation processes observed for the pores with a high filling degree. This behaviour gives a measure of the extension of the influence of the wall on the neighbouring 8CB molecules. In addition, the differences revealed by the molecule dynamics inside the two types of nanoporous materials are related to both surface interactions and geometrical constraints.
