T1 - Topical collection: Analytical methods and applications in the materials and life sciences N2 - Current trends in materials and life sciences are flanked by the need to push detection limits to single molecules or single cells, enable the characterization of increasingly complex matrices or sophisticated nanostructures, speed up the time of analysis, reduce instrument complexity and costs, and improve the reliability of data. This requires suitable analytical tools such as spectroscopic, separation and imaging techniques, mass spectrometry, and hyphenated techniques as well as sensors and their adaptation to application-specific challenges in the environmental, food, consumer product, health sector, nanotechnology, and bioanalysis. Increasing concerns about health threatening known or emerging pollutants in drinking water, consumer products, and food and about the safety of nanomaterials led to a new awareness of the importance of analytical sciences. Another important driver in this direction is the increasing demand by legislation, particularly in view of the 17 sustainable development goals by the United Nations addressing clean energy, industry, and innovation, sustainable cities, clean water, and responsible consumption and production. In this respect, also the development of analytical methods that enable the characterization of material flows in production processes and support recycling concepts of precious raw materials becomes more and more relevant. In the future, this will provide the basis for greener production in the chemical industry utilizing recycled or sustainable starting materials. This makes analytical chemistry an essential player in terms of the circular economy helping to increase the sustainability of production processes. In the life sciences sector, products based on proteins, such as therapeutic and diagnostic antibodies, increase in importance. These increasingly biotechnologically produced functional biomolecules pose a high level of complexity of matrix and structural features that can be met only by highly advanced methods for separation, characterization, and detection. In addition, metrological traceability and target definition are still significant challenges for the future, particularly in the life sciences. However, innovative reference materials as required for the health and food sector and the characterization of advanced materials can only be developed when suitable analytical protocols are available. The so-called reproducibility crisis in sciences underlines the importance of improved measures of quality control for all kinds of measurements and material characterization. This calls for thorough method validation concepts, suitable reference materials, and regular interlaboratory comparisons of measurements as well as better training of scientists in analytical sciences. The important contribution of analytical sciences to these developments is highlighted by a broad collection of research papers, trend articles, and critical reviews from these different application fields. Special emphasis is dedicated to often-overlooked quality assurance and reference materials. M. ED - Gluth, Gregor T1 - Topical issue: Geopolymers N2 - Geopolymers have gained very much momentum in recent years, in science and in industry. These highly promising and versatile materials have been researched with a view to applications as diverse as fire-resistant/refractory materials, as precursors for ceramics, in waste stabilization/immobilization, and as novel building materials. The great interest in these materials is reflected, inter alia, by the installment of a session on geopolymers at the 92nd Annual Meeting of the Deutsche Keramische Gesellschaft (DKG; German Ceramic Society) in March 2017. Therefore this Special Issue is dedicated to disseminating some of the recent findings on these materials. In addition, it contains reviews by highly experienced researchers in the field, highlighting very different aspects such as fiber reinforcement and synchrotron-based characterization methods. Partly due to the interest from very different fields, the term „geopolymer“ is used with two different meanings. Sometimes it is used in the sense to denote the ceramic-like materials produced by activation of metakaolin with alkali silicate solutions, and closely related materials. On the other hand, sometimes it is used in a much broader sense to refer to any material that is produced by alkali-activation of many different aluminosilicate precursors, such as fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag waste materials, often serving as a cementitious binder. The present issue focusses on applications and materials that may be classified as ceramic, but also contains a review on the use of alkali-activated materials as construction materials to make the reader familiar with this approach too. Additionally, some of the materials described in this issue may be regarded as being „on the borderline“ between ceramics and cements, which is something that can be said about many studies in the geopolymer field. The editors are very grateful to each of the authors of the articles in the present issue, as all of them have contributed high quality research based on their extensive experience. In particular, the historial perpectives on the origins and developments of geopolymers and of alkali activated materials have been authoritatively documented in contributions, by Joseph Davidovits and Pavel Krivenko. Dr. Krivenko was the Ph.D. student of Viktor D. Glukhovsky who first introduced alkali activated cements in 1957. It is hoped that the readers of this issue will enjoy reading it as much as the editors enjoyed putting it together, and that the issue will stimulate more high quality studies of geopolymers, perhaps even from research groups that have not yet been active in this area. These new materials can play an important role in mitigating climate change and promoting a circular economy, which is one of the reasons why they are being actively researched in many laboratories around the world. Open Ceramics, the official, peer-reviewed, Open Access journal of the European Ceramic Society, is dedicated to foster this research and is compiling a Special Issue with the title “Alkali-activated and geopolymer materials in ceramics and various applications”. The aim of this Special Issue is to promote new applications, the use of previously underused raw materials, and in particular a better understanding of the chemical and mechanical behavior of these materials. Severe facade fires in different parts of the world as well as activities in many countries regarding the testing of facades show the urgency of the fire safety challenges in façade fires. The need for knowledge and a wide Archive of work in this area has become evident after recent incidents which involved extensive facade fires. These include the tragic fires in Dubai and Grenfell Tower in 2017 in the United Kingdom. In many cases, the widespread live news coverage of the events and size of These fires has emphasized the need for progress in the understanding of the processes involved in these fires and put pressure upon the fire safety engineering community to find effective solutions. Having attended the Interflam conference, all Fire and Materials Journal editors who attended realised the importance of this topic. T1 - Special issue: Recent developments in thermo-mechanical fatigue N2 - Components in the Aerospace, Power and Automotive engineering sectors are frequently subjected to cyclic stresses induced by thermal fluctuations and mechanical loads. For the design of such components, reliable material property data are required which need to be acquired using well accepted and reproducible test procedures for thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) loading. There is limited availability of proven TMF data indicating there is need for further research and testing. The TMF behaviour of materials is often desired to be simulated in models which describe the cyclic stress-strain behaviour, the fatigue life and the cyclic crack growth behaviour. There is a continuous need for the development and amendment of such models. Models can be validated by using materials in industrial applications which are subjected to TMF loading. The 3rd Workshop on Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue was held on 27–29 April 2016 at BAM, Berlin, Germany. The workshop was attended by 90 attendees coming from 17 countries in the world. 38 presentations including five poster presentations were held. The following topics were covered by the workshop: – TMF of materials coated with Thermal Barrier Coatings. – Thermal Gradient Mechanical Fatigue. – TMF crack growth. – TMF + High Cycle Fatigue. – TMF Modelling and Lifetime Prediction. – TMF Properties of steels, cast iron, Al-, Mg- and Ni-alloys – Advanced TMF Testing Techniques. – Industrial Applications. A panel discussion was held regarding the present state of TMF testing standards (ISO and ASTM) and their potential for improvement. The discussion and contributions were summarized and forwarded to the standard committees. The 3rd TMF-Workshop ensured the continuation of international exchange of knowledge providing a forum to present and discuss all recent developments in the field of thermo-mechanical fatigue. The current special issue publishes eleven selected papers of the 3rd TMF-Workshop 2016. The papers were peer reviewed by a number of experts in the Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue sector.
