T1 - Non-destructive evaluation of the contribution of polymer-fibre orientation and distribution characteristics to concrete performance during fire N2 - Although concrete itself is not a combustible material, concrete mixtures with high density, such has high-performance concretes (HPCs), are susceptible to significant damage during fires due to explosive spalling. Past research has shown that the inclusion of polymer fibres in high density concrete can significantly mitigate this fire damage. The exact mechanisms causing this increased spalling resistance are not yet fully under-stood, but it is thought that the fibres facilitate moisture transport during fire exposure, which in turn contributes to relief of internal stresses in the spalling-susceptible region. In this study, X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) was applied to observe the interaction between polymer fibres and cracking during thermal exposure. For this purpose, two concrete samples containing different polymer fibre types were subjected to incremental application of a defined thermal exposure. CT images were acquired before and after each thermal exposure and powerful image processing tools were used to segment the various material components. This enabled a detailed analysis of crack formation and propagation as well as the visualization and quantification of polymer fibre characteristics within the concrete. The results demonstrated that the orientation of both fibres and cracks in polymer-fibre reinforced concrete tend to be anisotropic. The results also indicated that crack geometry characteristics may be correlated with fibre orientation, with cracks tending to run parallel to fibre beds. Clear quantitative relationships were also observed between heating and increasing cracking levels, expressed in terms of both crack surface area and crack volume. After a short introduction, subsection 5.2 describes the main testing methods that were used in the analysed studies. Sub-section 5.3 collects and compares; the temperature-dependency of the compressive strength and modulus of elastici1ty of many experimental studies. The influence of parameters such as the initial compressive strength, the type of aggregate, the presence of additions, the W/C ratio, the moishrre content and the way the mechanical test was performed is analysed. Sub-section 5.4 presents the experimental results obtained under a constant temperature, i.e. creep tests at high temperature. Sub-section 5.5 presents experimental results obtained under increasing temperahrre. These results allow assessing the free thennal strain of concrete (when no mechanical load is applied) and the so-called "transient the1mal strain". Geometric inaccuracies caused by shrinkage and deformations can compromise the life and performance of additively manufactured components. Such deviations can be quantified using Digital Volume Correlation (DVC), which compares the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model with the X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) geometry of the components produced. However, accurate registration between the two modalities is challenging due to the absence of a ground truth or reference deformation field. In addition, the extremely large data size of high-resolution XCT volumes makes computation difficult. In this work, we present a deep learning-based approach for estimating voxel-wise deformations between CAD and XCT volumes. Our method uses a dynamic patch-based processing strategy to handle high-resolution volumes. In addition to the Dice score, we introduce a Binary Difference Map (BDM) that quantifies voxel-wise mismatches between binarized CAD and XCT volumes to evaluate the accuracy of the registration. Our approach shows a 9.2% improvement in the Dice score and a 9.9% improvement in the voxel match rate compared to classic DVC methods, while reducing the interaction time from days to minutes. This work sets the foundation for deep learning-based DVC methods to generate compensation meshes that can then be used in closed-loop correlations during the AM production process. Such a system would be of great interest to industry, as it would make the manufacturing process more reliable and efficient, saving time and material. This study investigates the compression of industrial X-ray computed tomography (XCT) data using deep learning autoencoders and examines how these compression algorithms affect the quality of the recovered data. Two network architectures with different compression rates were used, a deep convolution neural network (D-CNN) and a vector quantized variational autoencoder (VQ-VAE). The XCT data used was from a sandstone sample with a complex internal pore network as a good test case for the importance of feature preservation. The quality of the decoded images obtained from the two different deep learning architectures with different compression rates were quantified and compared to the original input data. In addition, to improve image decoding quality metrics, we introduced a metric sensitive to edge preservation, which is crucial for three-dimensional data analysis. We showed that different architectures and compression rates are required depending on the specific characteristics needed to be preserved for later analysis. The findings presented here can aid scientists in determining the requirements and strategies needed for appropriate data storage and analysis. T1 - Particle Interactions in Silica Systems in Presence of Superplasticizer N2 - The flowability of cement paste is of great importance in today’s construction industry and is influenced by additives such as superplasticizers (SP). One type of SPs are polycarboxylate ether type SPs. These additives electrostatically bind with the negatively charged carboxylic groups at the backbone to the positively charged clinker phases. To model positively charged clinker phases with adsorbed SP, silicon Wafers are pre-coated with cationic polyethylenimine (PEI) and SP is adsorbed onto the coated surface (Si/PEI/SP). Two different polycarboxylate ether type (PCE) SP are compared – one for ready-mix concrete and one for precast concrete. In this preliminary study the interaction forces between Si/PEI/SP surface and a silica microsphere (colloidal probe) are investigated under mild physico-chemical conditions (pH *6, ion concentration <10−5 M) using Colloidal Probe Atomic Force Microscopy (CP-AFM). The interaction force between the model surfaces is attractive for low concentration of SP. The force changes from attractive to repulsive by increasing amount of SP. The force upon approach reveals a biexponential behavior. The exponential decay at large and short surface separations are attributed to electrostatic and steric interactions, respectively. The steric forces of the SP for ready-mix concrete show a steeper onset than the SP for precast concrete. The quantification of these interaction forces will be compared to rheological measurements of similar systems. Furthermore, the parameters will be changed to better approach the conditions in real systems, i.e. higher pH and ionic strength. This helps to understand how the forces on the nanoscale influence the macroscopic rheology. Each cementitious system provided different amounts and sizes of particles formed in the aqueous phase. The pastes were observed with and without polycarboxylate ether based superplasticizer. It was observed that the presence of particles causes higher PCE saturation dosages to achieve a minimum value, but the minimum value is only affected in the case of large particles. In all cases with and without PCE, the presence of small particles causes increased plastic viscosity. T1 - Contribution of the coarse aggregates to rheology - effects of flow coefficient, particle size distribution, and volume fraction N2 - In order to observe the effect of the aggregate phases between 2 mm and 16 mm without overlap with rheological effects induced by the cement hy-dration and without interactions with a threshold fine sand particle size that affects both, paste and aggregates, rheological experiments were conducted on a limestone filler based paste mixed with aggregates up to 16 mm. Vari-ous aggregate fractions were blended and mixed with the replacement paste in different volumetric ratios. The dry aggregates’ flow coefficients were determined and compared to yield stress and plastic viscosity values at different aggregate volume fractions. The results indicated that the flow coefficient is not a suitable parameter to predict the performance of the aggregates in the paste. It was shown that the yield stress of pastes is largely determined by the blend of different aggregate fractions, while the plastic viscosity to large extend depends upon the coars-est aggregate fraction. Based on the results, ideal aggregate composition ranges for minimised yield stress are presented. For the plastic viscosity no such grading curves to achieve minimum values could be found, but high viscosity curves are identified. T1 - Modeling Biogenic Weathering of Rocks from Soils of Cold Environments N2 - Morphologically simple and microbially dominated ecosystems termed “biofilms” have existed on Earth for a long period of biosphere evolution. A model biofilm combining one heterotroph and one phototroph component was used in a laboratory experiment to simulate biogenic weathering with two different specimens of basic rock samples from the soil profiles. The rocks fragments from the regions of cold environments of Eurasia, where abiotic physical processes, including rock disintegration initiated by freezing–thawing cycles, represent the most probable Scenario of rock weathering, were subjected to biological colonization. The rock Fragments were represented by dolerite and metagabbro amphibolites. Polished sections of the rock samples were inoculated with the model microbiological consortium of the oligotrophic fungus and the phototrophic cyanobacteria (biofilm). After 3 month runtime of the experiment the progress of rock weathering was derived from the growth of the biofilm on the rock surfaces. The model biofilm visualization on the rock surface of polished sections illustrated their stronger development namely on dolerite in comparison with metagabbro amphibolite. The findings confirmed the higher sensitivity of dolerite to biogenic weathering due to (i) mineral association, in which quartz was absent and (ii) porosity providing higher specific surface area for biotic—abiotic interaction influenced by the occurrence of micro-porosity in the rock. A dynamic mixture of chitin, glucans, mannans, glycoproteins, glycolipids and pigments supports the success of all fungal life styles – from symbiotic to the free-living and pathogenic. Fungi are perfectly adapted to grow on surfaces and in porous environments, where they form medically and geochemically relevant biofilms. Fungal EPS are critical in adhesion to other fungi, other cells or substratum as well as in the following interaction with the host immune system or material they attack, degrade and deteriorate respectively. Characterisation of extracellular compounds and understanding of its function is necessary to limit damage caused by fungal activity. All necessary methodology from chemical characterization to complete genetic analyses has been developed for medically important fungi. Now it is time to apply this knowledge to the numerous, largely aerobic and very active organisms that occupy a wide range of atmosphere-exposed habitats in the upper lithosphere. One can expect that analogies between medically- and environmentally-relevant model fungal species will help us to address the dynamics of the fungal cell EPS matrix in much more efficient and widely applicable ways. T1 - Role of light in the life cycle of Botrytis cinerea N2 - The fungus Botrytis cinerea (Botryotinia fuckeliana) infects more than 500 plant species and causes a wide range of symptoms: soft rots, accompanied by collapse and water-soaking of tissues followed by the appearance of gray masses of conidia on leaves and soft fruits (gray mold), and spots that may turn brown to full-scale soft rotting on flower petals (Botrytis blight). In general, B. cinerea is responsible for severe economic losses that are either due to the damage of growing plants in the field or the rot of harvested fruits, flowers, and vegetables during storage under cold and humid conditions. B. cinerea has adapted to the plant host and its environment by evolving strategies to use plant tissues for proliferation in terms of a necrotrophic lifestyle, and to survive biotic stresses (host responses) as well as abiotic factors of the host’s environment such as sunlight and concomitant stresses. B. cinerea maintains a complex regulatory network of light-sensitive proteins and signal transduction pathways to use light for coordinating stress responses, virulence, and reproduction. Different light-controlled reproduction cycles enable B. cinerea to live in moderate climate zones by infecting and propagating in summer and resting in winter when green host tissues are unavailable. T1 - Influence of different accelerators on the rheology and early hydration of cement paste N2 - Special applications like pumping, spraying or printing of concrete require the precise adjustment of very specific rheological properties at different time steps during the casting process. Superplasticizers such as polycarboxylate ethers (PCE) can be used to obtain the required flowability, which, possibly in combination with additional rheology modifying admixtures, generate the required specified consistency. However, after the application, the concrete should change the rheological properties immediately in order to avoid deformations at rest. Therefore, the use of accelerators can be effective. Accelerators influence the hydration of cementitious materials, and thus the rheological properties over the course of time and the setting. In this paper, the influence of different accelerators on the rheology and early hydration of cement paste as well as the interaction of accelerator and PCE are presented. Methods like rheometry, needle penetration tests and practical Tests like spread flow were applied. The used accelerators showed accelerating behavior on the cement pastes without and in the presence of PCE. At the same time an influence on the rheology could be observed. This effect was less in the mixes with PCE, especially at the highest water/cement ratio (w/c). T1 - Rheological properties of silica beads in the presence of different polymers and electrolyte N2 - Properties of interstitial liquid phase in cement paste, including the species and concentrations of polymers and ion etc., play an important role for the rheological properties of cementitious materials. In order to better understand their effect, an inert model substance, spherical silica beads (SBs) with defined surface and granulometry were used in the presence of electrolytes (CaCl2) and/or different polymers, including polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). It was found the presence of Ca2+ greatly increases the viscosity and yield stress of silica beads paste (SBP), which is proportional to the [Ca2+]. For the effect of PCE, the addition of PCE is beneficial to the flowability of SBP, but a high dosage of PCE leads to a reversal effect. Furthermore, the yield stress firstly increases and then decreases with increasing [Ca2+] under the same dosage of PCE. The addition of PEG always increases the yield stress of SBP, regardless of the ion concentration and the presence or not of PCE. T1 - Global relations between the Redox cycles of carbon, iron, and sulfur N2 - Solar energy has been transformed into useful redox differences or disequilibria within the Earth´s crust since the onset of anoxygenic and oxygenic photosynthesis in the Precambrian. Inorganic oxidized carbon is transformed into reduced carbon compounds by capturing and storing solar energy. During this process, many different organic compounds are formed including carbohydrates, proteins, hydrocarbons, and various other complex organic metabolic products and their diagenetic polymerization products (melanin, humic substances, petroleum, coal, and kerogen). Many of these solar energy-enriched compounds, however, are oxidized immediately or during the diagenetic transformation of sediments. The oxidation agents are oxygen, sulfate, iron, and other oxidized compounds, which in turn are partly enriched with the original solar energy. On a global biogeochemical scale, however, sulfur and iron are the most important elements. Geological evidence shows that biogeochemical cycles tend to yield stable ratios between the most oxidized forms of carbon (carbon dioxide and calcium/magnesium carbonate) and the most reduced forms (diamond, coal, methane, and hydrocarbons). Throughout the Earth’s history and evolution, this equilibrium ratio is around 1:4, maximally 1:5. When too much carbon is stored in the crust in the form of reduced compounds or vice versa, climatic and biogeomorphogenetic consequences upset the equilibrium. The biosphere reacts in a way to return to the optimal ratio. Excellent examples for this fluctuating equilibrium are the Carboniferous (too much organic carbon stored), the Permian (too little organic carbon stored), and the Tertiary with a generally equivalent production of hydrocarbons and carbonates. At present, we are in a period in which there is a global biogeochemical need to oxidize reduced carbon compounds as fast as possible in order to avoid even more dramatic global climate shifts. The highly evolved human genome seems to be the tool for this shift. Enormous amounts of reduced carbon are turned into the oxidized form as carbon dioxide, which by various biogeochemical pathways is quickly transformed into carbonate, another oxidized form of carbon that can be stabilized and stored in the sedimentary record. Fast recycling of excessively stored solar energy may enable the survival of a global biosphere under highly stressed conditions. This doping strengthens the laminates, whose original properties are weaker than those of prepregs. Besides the shear strength, compression strength and the damage tolerance, the mode of action of the nanoparticles in resin and in CFRP is also analyzed. It thereby reveals that the hydroxyl groups and even more a taurine modification of the boehmites' surface alter the elementary polymer morphology. Consequently a new flow and reaction comportment, lower glass transition temperatures and shrinkage, as well as a changed mechanical behavior occur. Due to a structural upgrading of the matrix (higher shear stiffness, reduced residual stress), a better fiber-matrix adhesion, and differing crack paths, the boehmite nanoparticles move the degradation barrier of the material to higher loadings, thus resulting in considerably upgraded new CFRP. In this chapter, the usage of synchrotron measurements, algorithms for image analysis (Amira, ZIB), and the finite element method using parallelized computational resources for topological analysis of osteocytes is explained and discussed. Different routines normally applied for material characterization of network-like structures (skeletonization) have been adapted to visualize osteocytes along bone cement lines at high resolution (2.174 µm). The different steps concerning to counting osteocytes and analyzing the mechanical behavior of bones are illustrated with an example. Our findings showed a clear alignment of the osteocytes along the cement lines. Interestingly, at the regions near the bone surface with reduced mineralization grade, osteocytes were mainly aligned along the close to high mineralized region. Apparently, not only osteocytes number is reduced with aging but their size increases and they become sparely distributed in comparison with the healthy bone samples from the human mandible. Automatic tetrahedron mesh generation using the "tetragen" tool from Amira worked adequately for meshing the biopsies with a resolution of 20 µm, but meshing biopsies with osteocytes embedded on the bone matrix from the SR-CT samples consumes an enormous amount of time, due to necessary adjustments for avoiding intersections and conserving model closeness.
