A1 - Wetzig, K. A1 - Steers, E.B.M. T1 - Investigations of the effect of hydrogen in an argon glow discharge N2 - Clear evidence of the effects caused by hydrogen, introduced in different forms in an analytical glow discharge source (GDS) operated with argon, is presented for the different matrix elements copper, stainless steel, titanium, aluminium and silicon. When hydrogen is present even in small quantities in argon, not only are there significant changes in the emission line intensities of most elements (analyte and plasma species), but also new spectral features, such as emission bands of new compounds (hydrides of sputtered sample constituents) and a continuous background in the range ~220–440 nm. Moreover, the discharge current (the dependent parameter in our experiments) decreases with increasing hydrogen concentration. Different modes of hydrogen introduction, externally in gaseous form or sputtered as a sample constituent, cause very similar effects in terms of discharge current, line intensity (of analyte and plasma gas) and emission continua, which implies similar changes in the discharge processes in the two cases. The excitation of the hydrogen continuum appears to quench the population of the argon metastables (11.55 and 11.72 eV) and, consequently, other elementary processes in the plasma in which the argon metastables take part, but to a different extent for each analyte. T1 - Emission spectra of copper and argon in an argon glow discharge containing small quantities of hydrogen N2 - The influence of hydrogen contained in a sample or otherwise introduced into a glow discharge source (GDS) is here extensively experimentally presented for the case of copper as a sample by means of the addition of small quantities of molecular hydrogen (<1% relative partial pressure) to the argon carrier gas. The progressive addition of molecular hydrogen causes different intensity changes particular to the individual lines of different species such as atomic (Cu I) and ionic (Cu II) copper, and also atomic (Ar I) and ionic (Ar II) argon. Some interesting features of the emission spectrum of hydrogen such as its line, band and even continuum spectrum are observed. It was also found that the depth resolution becomes worse even at very low concentrations of hydrogen. Whereas the complexes with paramagnetic ions and HgII are non-fluorescent, ZnII and CdII form highly fluorescent complexes, their coordination geometries depending on the solvent proticity and hydrogen-bond donating ability. Through a comparative study with the corresponding chelates of 2,2-bipyridyl (bipy), N,O-coordination in a six-membered ring chelate has been found to be the dominant binding mode in both the ZnII and CdII complexes in the protic solvents water and ethanol. Only for ZnII and BPOH is exclusive N,N-chelation found in acetonitrile. NMR measurements on BP(OH)2, BPOH, and bipy in the presence of ZnII and CdII in acetonitrile confirmed these findings. The donor–acceptor (D–A) biphenyls I and II being planar in the CT excited state are most suitable as pH-sensitive fluorescent probes. T1 - Generation and stimulated decay of paramagnetic centres in laser excited glasses N2 - Direct coupling of an excimer laser to the cavity of an X-band ESR spectrometer enabled in situ observation of ultraviolet irradiation (248 nm) induced effects in aluminosilicate glasses. Under these conditions the radiation was absorbed by iron traces present in the glasses and finally electron/hole pairs were formed. The trapping and detrapping of electrons and holes, e.g. generation and decay of paramagnetic defects, could be followed in dependence on repetition rate of the laser (1–20 Hz), temperature during irradiations (4·2–300 K) and composition of the glasses. The holes were trapped at Si–O and Al–O–Si sites. Zn2+ and Cd2+ ions (likely as parts of Zn–O or Cd–O aggregates) as well as Fe3+ ions served as effective electron traps. Additionally, changes of the dielectric properties of the samples during and after ultraviolet irradiations could be monitored directly. These are large if relatively mobile ions (e.g. Na+) are present in the sample. Comparison of ultraviolet to -irradiated samples shows that the type of traps present in the samples mainly depends on the glass composition. However, the relative amounts of stabilised holes and electrons essentially depend on the conditions and parameters of irradiation.
