T1 - Electric field driven separation of oil-water mixtures: Model development and experimental verification N2 - Electrocoalescence of aqueous droplets in oil emulsions is commonly contemplated for enhancing separation. High voltage electric fields can induce charges to Drops evoking merging of adjacent droplets. The newly formed larger Drops then sink faster in gravitational common settlers. Therefore, separation performance of an electrostatic coalescer is strictly linked to characteristics of the electric field and properties of the liquid−liquid system. In this work, the coalescence Performance of water droplets sinking in dodecane at a pulsed DC electric field is investigated. An experimental setup allowing the simultaneous injection of similar sized drops, setting of voltage and pulsation frequency, and particle tracking at high frame rate and resolution is designed. The generated data are used to check the validity of modeling approaches for drag, dipole−dipole forces, and film-thinning. Furthermore, CFD simulations are carried out using a volume of fluid method tracking the interfaces between the two phases. A1 - Bartholmai, Matthias T1 - Tomographic reconstruction of soil gas distribution from multiple gas sources based on sparse sampling N2 - A monitoring method is introduced that creates twodimensional (2D) maps of the soil gas distribution. The method combines linear gas sensing technology for in-situ monitoring of gases in soil with the mapping capabilities of Computed Tomography (CT) to reconstruct spatial and temporal resolved gas distribution maps. A weighted iterative algebraic reconstruction method based on Maximum Likelihood with Expectation Maximization (MLEM) in combination with a source-by-source reconstruction approach is introduced that works with a sparse setup of orthogonally-aligned linear gas sensors. The reconstruction method successfully reduces artifact production, especially when multiple gas sources are present, allowing the discrimination between true and non-existing so-called ghost source locations. Experimental validation by controlled field experiments indicates the high potential of the proposed method for rapid gas leak localization and quantification with respect to Pipeline or underground gas storage issues. A1 - Piechotta, Christian T1 - Determination of moderately polar arsenolipids and mercury speciation in freshwater fish of the River Elbe (Saxony, Germany) N2 - Arsenic and mercury are frequent contaminants in the environment and care must be taken to limit their entrance into the food chain. The toxicity of both elements strongly depends upon their speciation. Total amounts of As and Hg as well as their species were analyzed in muscle and liver of 26 fishes of seven freshwater fish species caught in the River Elbe. The median concentrations of As were 162 mg kg-1 w.w. in liver and 92 mg kg-1 w.w. in muscle. The median concentrations of total Hg were 241 mg kg-1 w.w. in liver and 256 mg kg-1 w.w. in muscle. While this level of Hg contamination of the freshwater fish in the River Elbe is significantly lower than 20 years ago, it exceeds the recommended environmental Quality standard of 20 mg Hg kg-1 w.w. by a factor of 5e50. However, the European maximum level of 500 mg Hg kg-1 for fish for human consumption is rarely exceeded. Arsenic-containing fatty acids and hydrocarbons were determined and partially identified in methanolic extracts of the fish by HPLC coupled in parallel to ICP-MS (element specific detection) and ESI-Q-TOF-MS (molecular structure detection). While arsenobetaine was the dominant As species in the fish, six arsenolipids were detected and identified in the extracts of liver tissue in common bream (Abramis brama), die (Leuciscus idus), asp (Aspius aspius) and northern pike (Esox lucius). Four arsenic-containing fatty acids (AsFA) and two arsenic-containing hydrocarbons (AsHC) are reported in freshwater fish for the first time. With respect to mercury the more toxic MeHgþ was the Major species in muscle tissue (>90% of total Hg) while in liver Hg2þ and MeHgþ were of equal importance. The results Show the high relevance of element speciation in addition to the determination of total element concentrations to correctly assess the burden of these two elements in fish. Since little is known about their toxicity, there is a significant concern about their health risk. Here we report the synthesis of two new AsL and their identification in fish by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled simultaneously to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and to high resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS). The molecular structure was elucidated on the basis of their exact mass and their product ion mass spectra. One of the synthesized AsL has been already identified in fish samples, meanwhile, the other arsenolipid is reported here as a natural product in fish. T1 - Biocide leaching during field experiments on treated articles N2 - Background: Biocidal products can be sources of active substances in surface waters caused by weathering of treated articles. Marketing and use of biocidal products can be limited according to the European Biocidal Products Regulation if unacceptable risks to the environment are expected. Leaching of active substances from treated articles was observed in field experiments to obtain information on leaching processes and investigate the suitability of a proposed test method. Results: Leaching under weathering conditions proceeds discontinuously and tends to decrease with duration of exposure. It mainly depends on the availability of water, but is also controlled by transport processes within the materials and stability of the observed substances. Runoff amount proved to be a suitable basis to compare results from different experiments. Concentrations of substances are higher in runoff collected from vertical surfaces compared to horizontal ones, whereas the leached amounts per surface area are higher from horizontal surfaces. Gaps in mass balances indicate that additional processes such as degradation and evaporation may be relevant to the fate of active substances in treated articles. Leached amounts of substances were considerably higher when the materials were exposed to intermittent water contact under laboratory conditions as compared to weathering of vertically exposed surfaces. Conclusions: Experiences from the field experiments were used to define parameters of a procedure that is now provided to fulfil requirements of the Biocidal Products Regulation. The experiments confirmed that the amount of water which is in contact with exposed surfaces is the crucial parameter determining leaching of substances. T1 - Towards the standardization of biochar analysis: the COST action TD1107 interlaboratory comparison N2 - Biochar produced by pyrolysis of organic residues is increasingly used for soil amendment and many other applications. However, analytical methods for its physical and chemical characterization are yet far from being specifically adapted, optimized, and standardized. Therefore, COST Action TD1107 conducted an interlaboratory comparison in which 22 laboratories from 12 countries analyzed three different types of biochar for 38 physical–chemical parameters (macro- and microelements, heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pH, electrical conductivity, and specific surface area) with their preferential methods. The data were evaluated in detail using professional interlaboratory testing software. Whereas intralaboratory repeatability was generally good or at least acceptable, interlaboratory reproducibility was mostly not (20% < mean reproducibility standard deviation < 460%). This paper contributes to better comparability of biochar data published already and provides recommendations to improve and harmonize specific methods for biochar analysis in the future. The potential of diverse fluorophore–antibody conjugates, being chemisorbed onto low-cost gold nanoparticulate SEIRA substrates, has been explored with respect to their spectral discriminability. These novel biolabels deliver molecular SEIRA fingerprints that have been successfully analyzed by both uni- and multivariate analyzing tools, to discriminate their multiplexing capabilities.
