It was shown that mass burning rates, flame temperatures and thus the Surface Emissive Power (SEP) of OP exceed to that of hydrocarbons considerably. These facts lead to further investigations of even dangerous worst case scenarios i.e. related to storage and transportation. A metal drum containing 200 l of DTBP (Di-tert-butyl peroxide) is investigated under a surrounding wood fire. Due to a higher heat flux to the substance, the mass burning rate reaches multiples of an equivalent pool fire and results in several fireballs. The analyses of thermographic camera images and radiometer measurements show higher flame lengths, higher temperatures and therefore increased thermal radiation compared to OP pool fires. The resulting greater safety distances for a DTBP fireball event are discussed. Concrete as an example is a highly heterogeneous material with 1/7 cement (major component CaO) and 6/7 aggregates (SiO2) with different grain sizes. Due to a scanning procedure a two dimensional element distribution of a concrete surface can be measured. T1 - Comparative study on the performance of the standardized test method for detonation flame arrestors N2 - Detonation flame arresters are widely used as protection systems in industrial applications to avoid damage from incidental gas explosions, by preventing the propagation of the ongoing explosion from one section of a plant to another. Numerous processes in the chemical and petrochemical industry are taking place under non-atmospheric conditions (e.g. increased pressure and/or temperature) in order to optimize the production capabilities. The suitability of detonation flame arresters is verified and examined according to the DIN EN ISO 16852 standard, which is only based on findings from experiments under atmospheric conditions. In some instances, differing results are obtained by the different institutes using the current standardized test procedure, especially for instable detonations as well as for detonations at elevated pressures before ignition. The primary objective of this study is to develop an improved test method for detonation flame arresters, which offers a higher reproducibility and moreover, an applicability under non-atmospheric conditions. For this aim, the project partners (PTB, BAM, Braunschweiger Flammenfilter GmbH and IBExU GmbH) jointly conduct an interlaboratory comparison on the performance of in-line flame arresters for stable and instable detonations. The experiments are performed according to the test method regulated in the DIN EN ISO 16852 standard for different pressures before ignition and for different explosion groups (IIA, IIB, IIC). The interlaboratory comparison points out potential ambiguities of the standardized test procedure that might lead to the differing results at the different institutes. Based on these experimental findings, an improved test method for detonation flame arresters will be developed, which will ensure a greater safety at process plants while handling combustible liquids and gases. The contribution shows some evaluation methods, experimental results and some modelling and theoretical results. Simple evaluation methods have been developed for single and coupled floors. Two coupled beams have been measured in good agreement with the theory. A more complex coupling model has been found for a large wooden floor in a castle consisting of six floor bays which correlates well with the measurements. Damaged and intact poles have been tested by their natural frequencies and damping values, and a fair correlation between the degree of damage and the shift of the frequency. Road bridges have been analysed in detail and some examples are presented. Railway bridges and trains are studied for resonant excitation. The risk of resonance can be estimated in frequency domain by using axle-sequence spectra of the train and the natural frequencies of the bridge. A measurement example shows the amplification, but even stronger the cancellation of the subsequent axle responses. Several high-speed trains and freight trains have been analysed for their potential resonance amplification. Despite these regulations, in practice concrete structures often show severe damage during their service life. One of these damages is pitting corrosion of the reinforcement, which can be caused by chloride ingress into the structure. Therefore, determining the distribution and depth of chloride ingress is important in predicting the service life. LIBS provides an alternative method to conventional wet chemistry in civil engineering. Despite many advantages, the use of LIBS has been severely limited due to a lack of regulations. Together with project partners from research and industry, we are currently working on a leaflet that will regulate chloride analysis in civil engineering using LIBS. This year, an international round robin test was organized to evaluate the performance of LIBS for chloride analysis in cement pastes.
