Furthermore, computational methods are used to understand this configurational preference. Standard quantum chemical methods can predict the favored configurations by using minimum energy calculations on the potential energy landscape. However, the explicit role of the solvent is not revealed by this type of methods. In order to better understand its influence, classical mechanical molecular simulations are applied. H. A1 - Rücker, Werner T1 - Ultimate limit state model basis for assessment of offshore wind energy converters N2 - This paper establishes the model basis regarding the ultimate limit state consisting of structural, loading, and probabilistic models of the support structure of offshore wind energy converters together with a sensitivity study. The model basis is part of a risk based assessment and monitoring framework and will be applied for establishing the 'as designed and constructed' reliability as prior information for the assessment and as a basis for designing a monitoring system. The model basis is derived considering the constitutive physical equations and the methodology of solving these which then in combination with the ultimate limit state requirements leads to the specific constitutive relations. As a result finite element models based on shell elements incorporating a structural and a loading model are introduced and described in detail. Applying these models the ultimate capacity of the support structure and the tripod structure are determined with a geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element analysis. The observed failure mechanisms are the basis for the definition of the ultimate limit state responses. A probabilistic model accounting for the uncertainties involved is derived on the basis of literature review and measurement data from a prototype Multibrid M5000 support structure. In combination with the developed structural and loading models, sensitivity analyses in regard to the responses are performed to enhance the understanding and to refine the developed models. To this end, as the developed models necessitate substantial numerical efforts for the probabilistic response analysis predetermined designs of numerical experiments are applied for the calculation of the sensitivities using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient. With this quantification of the sensitivity of the random variables on the responses including nonlinearity the refinement of the model is performed on a quantitative basis. N2 - Regarding suspension towers of overhead transmission lines, wind is the most critical load case in design. Wind action on conductors significantly contributes to the overall loading of those supporting structures in case of wide spanning cables used in high voltage level. Hence it is inherent that loadbearing characteristic of conductor cables plays an important role for reliable design of new constructions or evaluation of reliability level of existing structures. Therefor extreme wind situations, a so-called 50-years wind event is of particular interest. Under such high wind velocities, mainly wind induced vibrations of conductor cables occur. Concepts employed for design purpose are mostly based on admittance functions in frequency domain. This implies linearization around the operating position of mean deflection, which is only valid for the assumption of small vibration amplitudes. Herein damping of the system becomes important. Structural damping of stranded wires is indeed negligible low, but in case of wind action aerodynamic damping increases significantly due to the relative velocity between acting wind flow and structure. The description of loadbearing characteristics in time domain allows considering nonlinear behavior of force admittance as well of large displacements. Relevant parameters for design can thereby be identified and necessary assumptions on wind action as well as quasi-steady force admittance can be validated. Just by that the behavior of overhead transmission line cables under extreme wind events which need to be extrapolated, can be simulated by means of the assumptions made. Models of admittance as well as a model in time domain are validated by means of field measurements at rather moderate wind speeds. Distributing wind sensors along an overhead transmission line, the lateral distribution of wind which is decisive for the loading of conductor cables can be captured. Existing assumptions for this are validated and extended. For calculations in time domain, a method for generation of a wind field will be extended in order to reproduce wind events adequately also in time domain. Aiming at a reliable design of overhead transmission lines under turbulent wind, so-called span reduction factors are derived and converted to other transmission line configurations which include the mechanics of overhead line conductors as well as the predominant characteristics of wind loading. T1 - Following adsorbed intermediates on a platinum gas diffusion electrode in H3PO3‑containing electrolytes using in situ X‑ray absorption spectroscopy N2 - One of the challenges of high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells is the poisoning of the Pt catalyst with H3PO4. H3PO4 is imbibed into the routinely used polybenzimidazole-based membranes, which facilitate proton conductivity in the temperature range of 120−200 °C. However, when leached out of the membrane by water produced during operation, H3PO4 adsorbs on the Pt catalyst surface, blocking the active sites and hindering the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The reduction of H3PO4 to H3PO3, which occurs at the anode due to a combination of a low potential and the presence of gaseous H2, has been investigated as an additional important contributing factor to the observed poisoning effect. H3PO3 has an affinity toward adsorption on Pt surfaces even greater than that of H2PO4 −. In this work, we investigated the poisoning effect of both H3PO3 and H3PO4 using a half-cell setup with a gas diffusion electrode under ambient conditions. By means of in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, it was possible to follow the signature of different species adsorbed on the Pt nanoparticle catalyst (H, O, H2PO4 −, and H3PO3) at different potentials under ORR conditions in various electrolytes (HClO4, H3PO4, and H3PO3). It was found that H3PO3 adsorbs in a pyramidal configuration P(OH)3 through a Pt−P bond. The competition between H3PO4 and H3PO3 adsorption was studied, which should allow for a better understanding of the catalyst poisoning mechanism and thus assist in the development of strategies to mitigate this phenomenon in the future by minimizing H3PO3 generation by, for example, improved catalyst design or adapted operation conditions or changes in the electrolyte composition. T1 - Evidence for redox reactions during vanadium crossover inside the nanoscopic water-body of Nafion 117 using X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy N2 - A major source of capacity fade of the common vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is the vanadium ion transport through the separator. However, different transport models disagree significantly in the diffusion coefficient for the different V species and the influence of different transport mechanisms. The underlying hypothesis of this work is that reactions inside the membrane are partly responsible for these discrepancies. Accordingly, it was investigated if redox reactions inside the nanoscopic water body of Nafion 117 can occur. X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) was used to distinguish between the different V species inside hydrated Nafion 117 and novel PVDF-based membranes. It was validated that the speciation of vanadium can be performed using the pre-edge peak energy and intensity. The experiments were performed as follows: strips of the membrane were exposed from one site to a V3+ solution (green) and from the other site to a VO2+ solution (yellow). The ions could diffuse into the membrane from both sides. A change of color of the membrane strip was observed. The blue color in the middle of the strip indicated that VO2+ was formed where V3+ and VO2+ got in contact. Using XANES this reaction inside Nafion was proven. The sealing function of such repositories is depending on the ability of the applied construction materials to form and maintain a geotechnical barrier with the surrounding rock. Corrosion of the construction material can lead to leakage of radioactive compounds and must therefore be avoided or minimized. Since concretes based on conventional Portland cement have not been found suitable in this context, alternative binders must be evaluated. One such class of binders are hybrid cements, which are blends of low fractions of Portland cement or Portland clinker and high fractions of supplementary cementitious materials, such as blast furnace slag and fly ash, activated by an alkali salt. Besides a low heat of hydration and a sufficient early compressive strength [1], chemical similarities with ancient Roman concrete suggest an excellent durability in saline environments [2], which makes these cements potentially suitable for applications in nuclear waste repositories in evaporite rock, such as the Morsleben repository in Germany. In the present study, two previously designed and characterized [3] hybrid cements, an alkali-activated slag/fly ash blend, and an OPC paste were studied regarding their resistance against corrosion in an aggressive saline solution. The saline solution was designed by the Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS) [Association for Facility and Reactor Safety] as a reference representing a solution forming as the result of contact of surface water with evaporite rock. The cement pastes were exposed to the saline solution up to 70 days and characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and spatially resolved X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. In addition, thermodynamic modelling was performed to simulate the alterations of the phase assemblage with increasing exposure to the saline solution and, thus, provide indications on the long-term durability of the cement pastes. The experimental results revealed a correlation between the Portland clinker content of the cements and the resistance of the cement pastes against attack by the saline solution. This outcome was related to the formation of portlandite when sufficient clinker was available, which maintained the pore solution pH at ~12.5, and thus prevented the dissolution of cementitious phases. Once portlandite was consumed, C-N-A-S-H and ettringite dissolved and released calcium, aluminium, and hydroxide ions in the solution, maintaining the pH at ~10. In this pH range, the formation Cl-AFm phases was observed. At lower pH values, i.e., extended exposure durations, gypsum was the major corrosion product. The pH-dependent dissolution and formation of phases lead to pronounced zonation in the exposed cement pastes. Thermodynamic modelling indicated that the dissolved silicon from C-N-A-S-H reacts with magnesium ions in the saline solution to form M-S-H, and that long-term exposure eventually leads to a material rich in amorphous silica and brucite. N2 - Pseudocapacitance-type transition metal oxides have been extensively investigated as anodes materials for lithium-ion batteries. Currently, they are also emerging as promising anodes for sodium-ion batteries due to their low volume change and safety. However, the potential electrochemical performance in sodium energy storage is not fully achieved, primarily due to the larger radius of the Na+-ions. Here, we report for the first time an iron niobate with columbite structure as a high-performance sodium storage anode. The presence of iron in the structure is vital to trigger the loss of long-range order through disorder of the FeO6 octahedra local structure, subsequently allowing reversible Na storage in an amorphous phase. Simultaneously, the formation of short-range ordered zigzag-chain structures within the NbO6 planes creates a “skeleton” that offers abundant active sites for pseudocapacitive ion storage and enhanced ion diffusion pathways. These characteristics of FeNb2O6 make it an effective intercalation host, offering high capacity along with fast Na+ insertion and extraction, as demonstrated through operando and ex-situ characterizations. It leads to an applicable reversible capacity ( 300 mAh g-1) with a favorable average voltage of ca. 0.6 V and excellent rate capability (180.4 mAh g-1 at a current density of 2 A g-1). T1 - Calorimetry Study of the Influence of Portland Cement Content, Slag/Fly Ash Ratio, and Activator Type on the Early Hydration of Hybrid Cements N2 - Hybrid cements (cements composed of Portland clinker, supplementary cementitious materials and an alkaline activator) potentially combine advantages of conventional cements with those of alternative binders, such as low heat of hydration and improved durability in some environments. While fly ash-based hybrid cements have been studied in considerable detail, slag-dominated hybrid cements appear to have received less attention. Here, the latter materials have been studied by isothermal calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and strength testing. The heat of hydration of these cements was as low as ~50% of that of an ordinary Portland cement, while their strength after 28-day curing was in the range 31–61 MPa. The phase assemblages after 28-day curing depended on the activator, with Na2SO4 leading to ettringite and Na2CO3 leading to hemicarbonate formation, respectively, besides C–A–S–H, portlandite and hydrotalcite. The U phase was identified when a high Na2SO4 dose and/or fly ash was employed. Na2SO4 accelerated the early reaction of the Portland clinker, while Na2CO3 appeared to decrease the extent of reaction of the clinker and led to a shift of the second hydration peak (likely related to slag reaction) to later hydration times, as did substitution of slag by fly ash. Increasing Na2SO4 dose from 4 to 6% did not lead to further acceleration of hydration or improved strength. Real-time in situ studies are essential to understand the dynamic behavior of catalysts under operational conditions. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) offers a unique, element-specific probe of electronic and structural changes at the active sites of electrocatalysts during electrochemical reactions. At BAM, collaborative research efforts leverage the advanced capabilities of the BAMline at the Berlin Synchrotron BESSY-II to study electrocatalytic materials under realistic working conditions. As a dedicated materials research beamline, the BAMline enables in situ and operando XAS across different time and length scales, making it ideally suited for monitoring catalytic transformations in real time. This presentation highlights the analytical strengths and sample environments developed for electrochemical cells at BAM, showcasing their application to electrocatalysis for energy conversion (e.g., water splitting, CO₂ reduction). Emphasis will be placed on how these insights contribute to the rational design and real-time optimization of functional materials for a sustainable energy future. Efforts to improve the yield and selectivity of propyleneoxidation using Pd-based catalysts have been shown to be highlysensitive to applied potential, pH, and electrochemical cell design.Record efficiencies and yields were obtained by substitution ofPdO by 4d or 5d transition metals, including Pt, with thus far littlerationale regarding the origin for the improvement. Throughelectrochemical analysis, scanning transmission electron micros-copy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and surface-enhanced infraredabsorption spectroscopy, we investigated the mechanism ofpropylene oxidation on Pd-based catalysts. We demonstrate thatadsorbates forming on PdO, where Pd adopts a square-planar coordination [PdO4], differ from that forming on the surface ofoxidized metallic Pd catalysts with an oxo intermediate mediating propylene oxidation on PdO. We further show that Pt substitutionin PdO does not modify this oxo intermediate. Varying pH, we found that the onset for propylene oxidation is pH independent, indicating a potential-determining step where the proton is not involved in and similar reaction pathway in acidic and near-neutralconditions. Finally, our work undoubtedly demonstrates that high Faradaic efficiency toward propylene glycol and propylene oxideformation, such as those previously reported in the literature, can be achieved by means of electrode engineering and mastery ofmass transport and local pH. Notably, we achieved ≈100% faradaic efficiency for propylene glycol at 1.7 V vs RHE in acidic mediausing a Pt-substituted PdO catalyst loaded onto a gas diffusion electrode. T1 - Effect of Curing Temperature on the Alkali Activation of German Brown Coal Fly Ash N2 - Due to environmental concerns regarding the use of Portland cement as the principal binder material in concrete and mortar it is imperative to identify alternative materials that could reduce the carbon footprint of the construction industry. One alternative to address these issues is the use of alkali activated materials, in particular, when based on waste streams that currently have no or only limited industrial application. This paper reports a preliminary study into the synthesis of geopolymer mortar utilizing Brown Coal Fly Ash. The ash had a CaO content of ~39%, indicating that synthesis at ambient or low temperature may be feasible. The paper reports initial trials on the effect of curing temperature, ambient to 120 °C, on the mechanical properties of the mortars produced. The results showed that ambient cured mortar achieved a compressive strength of 6.5 MPa at 3 days. A curing temperature of 60 °C gave the optimum results with a compressive strength of almost 20 MPa and a flexural strength of 3.5 MPa obtained.
