A general overview of the approval process, the requirements and approaches BAM applies are described. It was found that at temperatures up to about 750°C the ultimate tensile strength of Co-Al-Ta-W alloys can be at the same level or even higher than of Ni-based superalloys. The IAEA safety requirements state that during and following the fire test, the specimen shall not be artificially cooled and any combustion of materials of the package shall be permitted to proceed naturally. Small scale fire tests with wood filled metal drums by BAM and works of the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) showed that pre-damaged steel encapsulated wooden structures could start smoldering initiated by the thermal test. These processes supply additional energy to the cask which should be considered within the safety assessment of the package. As not much is known about smoldering processes in encapsulated wooden structures with a reduced oxygen supply the need for a test was identified. To investigate the influence of a smoldering impact limiter concerning the amount of energy supplied to the cask in dependence of the time BAM conducted a large scale impact limiter thermal test. For that, a pre-damaged impact limiter with a diameter of 2,3 m was mounted on a water tank simulating a cask. A complex system of a regulated pump, a heater, a cooler, a slide valve, a flow meter and numerous thermocouples were installed and connected to a control unit to ensure all needed operating conditions. After a pre-heating compared to typical SNF decay-heat, the 30 min lasting fire phase of the thermal test was started. After that, the expected and initiated smoldering began. The results of the large scale test are presented in this poster. Systematic small scale tests will follow to identify the influence of different parameters, e.g. moisture content and scale effects. Local defects in the coating were marked using focused ion beam (FIB) technique and were inspected after exposition to hot flue gas atmosphere at 300, 800, and 1300 h, respectively. Local defects like agglomerated alumina sol particles tend to spall off from the coating uncovering the underlying dense chromia scale. Re-coating was found to restore the protection ability from oxidation when repeatedly treated with hot flue gas. Cracks and voids did not promote the local oxidation due to the formation of crystalline Mn/S/O species within and on top of the coating. T1 - Local growth and insulation of CIGSe islands for micro concentrator solar cells N2 - Thin film solar cells made of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGSe) suffer from high costs, since the rare elements indium and gallium are used for a multitude of technical applications. The concept of micro-concentrator CIGSe solar cells allows substantial material saving. Therefore a reliable bottom up process for the preparation of the absorber islands is required. In addition, this also results in an increase of solar cell efficiency. We show that the indium islands can be grown at predefined locations by novel methods of surface treatment before indium deposition. By this, regular island patterns with a well-defined morphology have been obtained. The controlled deposition of copper, followed by selenization in a PVD system, and selective etching of copper selenides yields polycrystalline CIGSe micro islands with promising material properties. For the samples, we proof ways to place a non-conducting layer in between CIGSe islands to insulate the front and back contact. This layer is obtained by spin-coating and curing a novolak based resist. At first, the photovoltaic active absorber islands is completely covered by the resin. The top of the islands can be stripped by plasma etching for front contacting. A characterization of the obtained devices provided evidence for their functionality. The supporting IAEA Advisory Material SSG-26 provides information how to do that. Up to now package designers in different countries use other load factors for the design of attachment points than those specified in the IAEA guidance material. In particular the acceleration values vary between different countries and lead to difficulties during the validation of foreign approval certificates. Therefore the IAEA started a discussion process to review the existing guidance text. An international working group was constituted in 2013. Representatives came from different stakeholders, e.g. transport operators, competent authorities and modal organizations. The discussions concluded especially on the transport conditions which has to be considered for stowage design, including on the one hand the relevance of the load factors used for strength and fatigue analysis and on the other hand the criteria which have to be considered for the attachment points. Another standard with relevance to the load attachment of packages is ISO 10276. This standard deals with trunnion design, manufacturing and operational aspects. The regular standard revision phase started in 2017. An expert group discussed new state-of-the-art technology and proposed revised text for the ISO standard for international discussion. Up to now package designers in different countries use other load factors for the design of attachment points than those specified in the IAEA guidance material. In particular the acceleration values vary between different countries and lead to difficulties during the validation of foreign approval certificates. Therefore the IAEA started a discussion process to review the existing guidance text. An international working group was constituted in 2013. Representatives came from different stakeholders, e.g. transport operators, competent authorities and modal organizations. The discussions concluded especially on the transport conditions which has to be considered for stowage design, including on the one hand the relevance of the load factors used for strength and fatigue analysis and on the other hand the criteria which have to be considered for the attachment points. Another standard with relevance to the load attachment of packages is ISO 10276. This standard deals with trunnion design, manufacturing and operational aspects. The regular standard revision phase started in 2017. An expert group discussed new state-of-the-art technology and proposed revised text for the ISO standard for international discussion. The description of the content, considering the UF6 origin, i.e. natural or reprocessed, shall be clearly justified especially when the UF6 isotopic composition exceeds the limits specified in ASTM standards. Concerning the containment of the UF6, the applicant shall demonstrate in all conditions of Transport the leak-tightness of the valve and plug of the cylinders filled with enriched UF6. In this regard, when justifications are based on numerical calculations, the absence of contact between These components of the cylinder and the internal surfaces of the overpack after the regulatory drop tests shall be shown. In particular, absence of contact between the valve and any other component of the packaging shall be confirmed to respect the current IAEA regulations [3]. If complementary calculations show a contact between the plug and the internal surfaces of the overpack, additional tests are required to confirm that the strength resulting from this contact will not affect the plug leak-tightness. It can be noticed that the future revision of the IAEA regulations will include additional provision in case of contact of the plug with any other component of the packaging. In addition, the applicant shall demonstrate that the melting temperature of the valve, including the tinned joint, will not be exceeded during the regulatory fire test. Following aspects have to be considered concerning the determination of an appropriate length of the bar to obtain maximum damage to the specimen: the design of the package, its drop orientation and the impact point as well as a pre-damage of the package resulting from a previous 9m drop test. According to the Regulations the minimum length of the bar is defined as 20 cm, which has to be adapted to the outer surface of the package, especially to packages with large impact limiters. In this context, two main aspects are important: First, the realisation of a maximum puncture load applied to the package while no other component of the package has contact with the impact target. Second, the reduction of the risk of buckling and maximising the stiffness of the bar by a length which is as short as possible. In order to optimize the bar length, finite element calculations are often done by simulating the global behaviour of the package during the puncture test. The LIPSS were fabricated in an air environment at normal incidence with different values of the laser peak fluence and number of pulses per spot. The morphology of the generated structures was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and Fast-Fourier transform analyses. Moreover, the material structure and the surface chemistry of the carbon fibers before and after laser irradiation was analyzed by micro Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Large areas in the cm2 range of carbon fiber arrangements were successfully processed with homogenously distributed high- and low-spatial frequency LIPSS. Beyond those distinct nanostructures, hybrid structures were realized for the very first time by a superposition of both types of LIPSS in a two-step process. The findings facilitate the fabrication of tailored LIPSS-based surface structures on carbon fibers that could be of particular interest for e.g. fiber reinforced polymers and concretes. Experimental results indicate a noticeable change of relevant sealing properties like seal force and usable resilience depending on time and temperature. In this study, the metal seals are treated as a homogeneous material block so that the identified decrease in seal force can be treated as a material relaxation effect. For the time-dependent behavior of seal force, an enhanced power-law model is introduced for the first time and is compared with the currently used power-law model. Additionally, regarding the influence of temperature, the timetemperature superposition principle is applied to metal seals for the first time with a clearly defined process. Thus, possible mistakes in the application of principle could be avoided. The introduced method is widely available for different applications regarding effects the principle with time and temperature. Heating up concrete is a highly nonlinear process since the vaporization of residual water consumes high amounts of thermal energy and produce vast amounts of steam. The device and the corresponding software is the result of joint research of BAM, an ultrasonic instrument manufacturer and University of Kassel, Germany. It consists of 12 separate arrays of 32 point-contact shear wave transducers each, which can be deployed in flexible configurations. Each array is combined with battery and transmitter, receiver and wireless communication electronics. Three case histories are presented. First the system was deployed on a 5-m thick heavily reinforced foundation slab. The reflection of the slab’s bottom was imaged clearly. In addition, a multiple reflection was registered, thus giving hope that even thicker elements might be imaged by the instrument. Second, the LAUS was used to investigate a massive bridge girder where a heavy rainstorm during concreting had led to imperfections that were visible after removing the formwork was removed. The LAUS could image tendon ducts in 1.8m depth and the backwall closely behind them. Some limited areas showed blurred reflections and were checked by drill holes; these areas were affected by diffuse damage which could be repaired by injections. Third, a large retaining wall was checked for thickness. Meanwhile, the LAUS has been used in underground waste deposits (nuclear and other) for quality assurance of sealing plugs. A confirmed penetration depth of about 7 m has been reached. In this contribution, chemical, structural, and mechanical alterations in the formation of femtosecond LIPSS are characterized by a variety of surface analytical techniques, including energy dispersive X-ray analyses (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), micro Raman spectroscopy (µ-RS), and depth-profiling Auger electron microscopy (AEM). Alternative routes of electrochemical and thermal oxidation allow to qualify the relevance of superficial oxidation effects on the tribological performance in oil lubricated reciprocating sliding tribological tests (RSTT). During the manufacturing process, however, imperfections are often introduced, then further propagated due to harsh environmental conditions and a variety of loads. This leads to failure significantly before their projected 20-year lifespan. As replacement of entire blades can be a costly potential outcome, localized repair of the damaged region to restore structural integrity and thus lengthen its lifespan has become an important issue in recent years. Rotor blades are often repaired using a common technique for composite laminates: adhesively bonded structural repair patches. These methods involve replacing the lost load path with a new material that is joined to the parent structure, and include scarf or plug repairs. However, there currently do not exist any standardized repair procedures for wind turbine rotor blades, as comparisons of blade properties repaired with the existing methods have not been studied in depth. Namely, there is a lack of understanding about the effects of various repair methods on the fatigue life of the shells of rotor blades. This study therefore aims to begin to fill this knowledge gap by testing the influence of different repair patches on the blades’ mechanical properties. Manufactured with the vacuum-assisted resin infusion process, the test specimens are produced as a curved structure with GFRP sandwiching a polyvinyl chloride foam core to best represent a portion of a rotor blade shell. Scarf repairs are then introduced with varying layup techniques, and material properties are examined with cyclical fatigue tests. Crack growth and development is monitored during fatigue testing by various non-destructive testing methods, including passive thermography with an infrared camera system, and a 3D deformation analysis system with ARAMIS. Large deformation fields and detection of in- and out-of-plane deformations is thus possible in-situ. The mechanical behavior and development of defects in the various repaired specimens is compared to each other as well as to reference test specimens with no repair patches. In-situ test data is combined with further non-destructive testing methods, including laminography, and active thermography, to develop a robust understanding of the effects of repair concepts. Due to further treatment and measurements of the resulting three fractions 0–0.2 mm, 0.2–2 mm and 2–25 mm, the possible application in asphalt, concrete or cement has been investigated. One option could be the use of fresh BA which has been treated prior to the ageing processes. The preliminary results show the shifting of pollutants to the fine fraction but also components responsible for the ageing processes. Parts of the fine fraction hold the limit values for the cement plant of the project partner. On the other hand, the Contents of copper and zinc exceed the standard values for the process. The coarser fractions are free from mineral coatings and are not agglomerated in the case of the use of fresh BA. A following industrial separation step of glass has been successful. From the physical point of view an application in asphalt or concrete for the coarser fractions seems to be feasible. However, in leaching experiments a high release of different metals, especially copper, could be detected. This is probably due to the poorly conceived washing process but needs to be further investigated. N2 - Im Rahmen des Projekts OPTIMIN wurde eine Fraktionierung von Rostasche in verschiedene Korngrößenverteilungen mit integriertem Waschschritt durchgeführt. Aufgrund der weiteren Behandlung und Analyse der resultierenden drei Fraktionen 0–0,2 mm, 0,2–2 mm und 2–25 mm wurde die mögliche Verwertung in Asphalt, Beton oder Zement untersucht. Eine Option könnte die Verwendung von frischer Rostasche sein, die vor dem Einsetzen von Alterungsprozessen behandelt wird. Die vorläufigen Ergebnisse zeigen die Verlagerung von Schadstoffen in die Feinfraktion, aber auch von Anteilen, die für die Alterungsprozesse verantwortlich sind. Teile der Feinfraktion halten die Grenzwerte für das Zementwerk des Projektpartners ein. Andererseits übersteigen die Gehalte an Kupfer und Zink die Vorgabewerte für den Prozess. Die gröberen Fraktionen sind frei von mineralischen Anhaftungen und agglomerieren bei der Verwendung von frischer Rostasche nicht. Die nachfolgende Abtrennung von Glas war erfolgreich. Aus bauphysikalischer Sicht erscheint eine Anwendung in Asphalt oder Beton für die gröberen Fraktionen möglich. In Auslaugtests konnte jedoch eine hohe Freisetzung verschiedener Metalle, insbesondere Kupfer, nachgewiesen werden. Dies ist wahrscheinlich auf den schlecht konzipierten Waschprozess zurückzuführen, muss jedoch weiter untersucht werden. T1 - Dielektrische Diagnose von 110kV-Gasaußendruckkabelprüflingen unter Betriebsbedingungen mit faseroptischer Temperaturerfassung N2 - Es wurde ein Messaufbau realisiert, der die Betriebsedingungen von hydraulisch- pneumatischen Gasdruckkabelsystemen nachbildet und in dieser Veröffentlichung vorgestellt. Mit seiner Hilfe können im Labor diagnostische Messungen und beschleunigte Alterung der Isolierung bei variablen Temperaturen, Druckstufen, Spannungen und Frequenzen durchgeführt werden. Zur Temperatureinstellung wurde im Messaufbau eine Kurzschlussschleife verwendet, die stabile Heizströme über 700 A bei 50 Hz ermöglicht. Der Prüfspannungsbereich während der Verlustfaktor- und Teilentladungsmessungen lag zwischen 1 kV bis 25 kV mit einem Frequenzbereich zwischen 0,1 Hz bis 60 Hz. Um die örtliche und zeitlich lastabhängige Temperatur entlang des Messbelags bestimmen zu können, wurde eine optische Faser (Loose tube) um den Prüfling gewickelt, so dass eine ortsaufgelöste Temperaturermittlung über den Prüflingsmantel erreicht wurde. Aus den erhaltenen Temperaturmessdaten wurde ein einphasiges, planares thermisches Modell erzeugt, das das thermische Verhalten des Prüflings in Abhängigkeit von Laststrom, Raumtemperatur und Materialdaten nachbildet. Dieses wurde mit den aufgenommenen Messdaten verglichen. Aus den Erkenntnissen des einphasigen thermischen Modells soll ein dreiphasiges Modell entstehen, mit dessen Hilfe die Diagnosetemperatur und das Abkühlverhalten von erdverlegten Gasdruckkabeln abgeschätzt werden können. Dadurch kann zukünftig der Temperatureinflusses bei der Interpretation von Vor-Ort-Messungen hinzugezogen werden. Usually, these casks consist of a thick-walled monolithic cask body and a bolted double barrier lid System equipped with metal seals (consisting of an inner helical spring and two outer metal layers with a total cross-section diameter between 5 and 10 mm) to ensure the long-term safe confinement of the radioactive inventory. Based on analytical and experimental studies, such metallic Systems have been qualified of storage periods of up to four decades so far as long as proper manufacturing and assembling conditions are met. More than 20 years of Operation experience with a permanently increasing number of casks has shown full compliance with the expectations. In the meantime many countries have to face a significant delay of establishing a high-level radioactive waste repository what leads to Need for extending interim storage periods for probably 60, 80 or 100 years. Detailed questions have to be answered to clarify whether and to what extent salinization of the surface has an influence on the adhesion and durability of coatings in repairing applications and on pitting occurrence on stainless steels under atmospheric conditions. The questions arise which degree of salinization is reached after which period of time and how a defined and reproducible salinization can be simulated in the laboratory for further systematic investigations. Damit soll es, Betreibern von Offshore-Windparks ermöglicht werden, im Rahmen periodisch durchgeführter messtechnischer Überwachungsmaßnahmen mit einem gegenüber wiederkehrender Inspektionen wesentlich geringen Aufwand auftretende Schäden an der Struktur zuverlässig zu delektieren. Das untersuchte und implementierte Verfahren basiert auf der Methode der stochastischen unterraumbasierten Schadensdetektion. Dabei erfolgt eine statistische Analyse des wiederkehrend messtechnisch aufgenommenen dynamischen Antwortverhaltens des mechanischen Systems. Mittels statistischem Test werden signifikante Änderungen in dessen Eigenstruktur und damit Schäden delektiert. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden umfangreiche experimentelle als auch numerische Untersuchungen zur Sensitivität und Robustheit des beschriebenen Schadensindikators durchgeführt. Dazu sind zunächst an einem Labormodell mittels künstlich und reversibel eingebrachter Schäden grundlegende Analysen zu den Einflüssen signal- und verfahrensinhärenter Kenngrößen durchgeführt worden. Auf der Basis dieser Ergebnisse wurde im Anschluss mittels numerischer Analysen das Antwortverhalten von OWEA simuliert und der entwickelte Algorithmus zur Schadensdetektion an den so realisierten Datensätzen angewendet. Anhand der Ergebnisse der Arbeit wird aufgezeigt, dass, vorausgesetzt die Windenergieanlage befindet sich in Parkposition, eine Detektion von schon geringen Schäden an Gründungs-strukturen mit dem beschriebenen Verfahren, auch unter Einsatz weniger Messaufnehmer, zuverlässig möglich ist. N2 - The present work describes the adaptation of a global, vibration-based procedure for an early detection of structural damage to foundation-structures of offshore wind turbines (OWT). It is intended to enable operators of offshore wind farms to reliably detect structural damage by periodic measurement with a once installed monitoring System. The analyzed and implemented procedure is based on the method of stochastic subspace- based damage detection. This involves a Statistical analysis of the of the periodically measured dynamic response behavior of the mechanical System. By means of a Statistical test, significant change in its eigenstructure and thus damage is detected. Within the present work extensive experimental as well as numerical investigations on the sensitivity and robustness of the described damage indicator were conducted. For this purpose, fundamental analyzes of the effects of signal- and process-inherent Parameters on the detection results has been performed at a laboratory model structure by means of artificially and reversibly applied damage. Based on these results, the response behavior of OWT structures was then simulated numerically and the developed algorithm for damage detection was finally applied to the thus achieved data sets. Based on the results of the work it is shown that, assuming the wind turbine Stands in parking position, a detection of already small damage at foundation structures is reliably possible with the described method, even using only a limited number of sensors. T1 - Mechanism of vortex perturbation via unsteady pitching N2 - Experiments indicate that vortices trailing finite wings can be perturbed by periodic wing pitching, leading to rapid dissipation and bursting. To illustrate the perturbation mechanism, Betz vortex rollup relations are combined with the Theodorsen theory for unsteady lift response. A sinusoidal pitch motion on a rigid elliptic planform wing is computed in this study as one example. Pitching modifies the instantaneous lift due to the planform variations, via the reduced frequency, and the rollup relations are applied to low-frequency experimental conditions. The combined Betz–Theodorsen theory shows that relatively large spanwise perturbations of the vortex centers can be achieved and may accelerate the exponential growth associated with the Crow instability. In fact, 84.2% of the displacement of the unsteady trailing vortices due to unsteady pitching is oriented in the direction of the Crow instability. Furthermore, the axial velocity in the vortex center, calculated based on the Batchelor method, varies on the order of the flight speed. This forms two types of stagnation points produced by approaching and retreating axial core velocities; in the former case, conservation of mass leads to observations of “bursting.” This observation can be explained adequately on the basis of quasi-steady considerations. Im Rahmen des Aufsatzes werden Einflüsse diskutiert, die eine Herabsetzung der Schraubentragfähigkeit verursachen könnten. Diese Einflüsse, vornehmlich geometrische Imperfektionen, werden systematisch untersucht und ergänzend in praxisrelevanten Beispielen bewertet. Die somit gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden für die abschließende Beurteilung der großen Schrauben in Ringflanschverbindungen herangezogen. Global trend has shifted towards offshore energy, which can be obtained from either carbon intensive or renewable options, hence requiring structures such as rigs, platforms, and monopiles. Most of these structures adopt easily installable construction techniques, where lower foundation need to be connected with the super structure by mean of grouted composite joints. Generally, these composite connections have exterior sleeve, interior pile and infill grout. Being located in remote offshore conditions, connections can experience considerable adverse loading during their lifetimes. Degradations were reported inside similar connections, which were installed in last three decades. Besides, grouting in the offshore sites may often be proven difficult, which eventually leads to reduced capacity of connections in the long run. Thus, repair and rehabilitation of such connections should be planned ahead to minimize operational delays and costs in the future. This study aims at characterizing the nature of crack generation in grouted connections and thereby identifying the potential of repair using suitable repair material. Scaled grouted joints were manufactured using a novel mold, and connections were loaded under static load to visualize the main failure pattern. The failure mechanism and loading capacity are found compatible to previous results from earlier literature. Grouted connection was then repaired using cementitious injectable grout. The effectiveness of the repair system is also discussed.
