Cavity growth rates have been calculated through a resolution procedure based on the use of holomorphic complex functions. Three dimensionless parameters have been identified that are responsible for the cavitation development. Parameter studies have been carried out in order to characterise the mechanisms that are responsible for the cavitation development. These studies have been used to develop a physically motivated, simplified model in order to describe the cavitation development of the simulations in terms of global state variables. The simplified model is able to reproduce the cavitation development for all considered combinations of the dimensionless parameters and allows the description of the thickening behaviour of a cavitating grain boundary. Comparison of nanoscale modelling with experiment N2 - Automotive brake pads consist of many components but it is still not entirely clear which role each of the elements of this complex composition plays to provide the specified regimes of sliding. This is due to the mutual interaction of multiscale mechanisms, realized during the friction. In this work we have attempted to partly answer this question using computer simulations. Since the simulation allows us to consider various combinations of the structure of the system being simulated ceteris paribus, it becomes possible to understand the role of each constituent sequentially. The main attention is paid to the structure and composition of the thin film that forms on the surface of both bodies as a result of compaction of the wear product, its chemical composition and oxidation. This layer, also named a third body or friction film, differs in composition and microstructure from the two first bodies. We considered a single contact for the steady state sliding when the structure and composition of friction films already are formed. As a modelling tool we used the method of movable cellular automata, which has well proven itself in solving of such tasks. We investigated the influence of modification of the structure and composition of the third body on the features of system behaviour at friction. To assess the adequacy of the numerical model, experimental studies with an artificial third body were also carried out. The Simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data. In the scanning electron microscope, the conventional signal of secondary electrons (SE, dc part) is separated from the signal response of the SE detector, which is correlated to the respective excitation frequency for vibration by means of a lock-in amplifier. The dynamic response is separated either into images of amplitude and phase shift or into real and imaginary parts. Spatial resolution is limited to the diameter of the electron beam. The sensitivity limit to vibrational motion is estimated to be sub-nanometer for high integration times. Due to complex imaging mechanisms, a theoretical model was developed for the interpretation of the obtained measurements, relating cantilever shapes to interaction processes consisting of incident electron beam, electron–lever interaction, emitted electrons and detector response. Conclusions drawn from this new model are compared with numerical results based on the Euler–Bernoulli equation. A modular control and data acquisition approach is described and the application of two different automated measurement devices is shown. The BetoScan System consists of a self-navigating mobile robot. The System is especially designed for the Investigation of reinforced concrete floors exposed to de-icing salts. The data acquisition of the OSSCAR System, a multi-sensor Scanner, is similar to the robot approach. These different applications are based on a similar kernel allowing the modular use of different contact and non-contact sensors. The described general concept of multi-sensor data acquisition and data analysis presented here is not limited to the field of civil engineering applications. Zu diesem Zweck wurde das BetoScan-System entwickelt. Um weitere Erfahrungen mit dem BetoScan-System zu erhalten, wurde ein langjährig genutztes Parkhaus aus Stahlbeton mit Gussasphaltfahrbahn als Untersuchungsobjekt ausgewählt. Bei der experimentellen Bauwerksuntersuchung wurden die Verfahren Wirbelstrom, Radar, Ultraschall und Mikrowelle zum Einsatz gebracht. Von der Anwendung des Systems und der Auswertung der Ergebnisse wird in diesem Beitrag berichtet. N2 - In recent years a variety of non-destructive evaluation methods are more and more used for the inspection of constructions. Increasing the information value of inspections and the economic aspects of applications leads to a combination of methods on an automated system. Therefore, the BetoScan robot was developed. Gaining more experience in applications was realized with the inspection of a car park which was unused for several years. The building was made of reinforced concrete with melted asphalt as floor coating. Within the frame of the inspections eddy current, radar, ultrasound and microwaves were used. The application of the BetoScan system and the results are presented in this article. OP test conditions were most damaging and needed the lowest strain amplitudes. Pure torsional tests were found in between uniaxial IP and OP tests. The non-proportional multiaxial OP test showed a lower lifetime at the same equivalent mechanical strain amplitude compared to the other types of tests. N2 - Intramedullary hip screws (IMHSs) are implanted for the fixture of pertrochanteric femoral fractures (thigh bone). The present work investigates the failure of an IMHS implant after the rehabilitation period which required a revision surgery where the upper femur had to be replaced by a hip endoprosthesis. Due to litigation the corresponding failure analysis was conducted at BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing and is the subject of this article. By order of the customer failure causes due to material and fabrication failures should be particularly investigated. Therefore, thorough fractographic, chemical as well as metallographic investigations were carried out. In order to assess possible fabrication failures selected dimensions of the components were compared with the technical drawings and the surface topography was analysed. The investigation revealed several causes for the fracture of the lag screw which is the implant component intended to fix the position of the femoral head. These are in descending order of relevance: (1) the screw was placed incorrectly and therefore had a smaller bending stiffness, (2) the femoral fracture zone was not stable, i.e., the lag screw 'moved out' of its proper position and (3) the laser marking on the lag screw was relatively large and led to a metallurgical notch at the now, because of the above mentioned points, severely stressed region. A material- or fabrication failure was not the root cause for the fracture of the lag screw. It was mainly due to its incorrect placement during surgery and the instability of the bone fracture. Furthermore, the implant geometry with 130° was not well-suited for the patient's anatomy. A 135°-IMHS might have been biomechanically preferable. Based on the determined failure causes and influences a relative lifetime estimation led to about 10% of the lifetime of a correctly placed 135°-IMHS assuming a sufficiently stable bone fracture zone. For this purpose, different modes of chromatography have been applied. Chromatographic runs were transferred to MALDI targets utilizing a combined air/electrospray deposition device. Due to very high air tightness and very low air exchange rates in new buildings concentrations of these harmful substances can increase considerably. To minimize the risk, emissions from building products should be identified and quantified. With the common standard method, this means Tenax® sampling followed by thermal desorption and GC-MS analysis, these acids could not be detected sufficiently. The aim oft this study is the comparison of two different methods for the determination of acetic and formic acid. The sampling of method one, which is usually used for identification and quantification of VOCs, is done in accordance with ISO 16000-6 and ISO 16017-1 on Carbotrap® 202 multi-bed thermal desorption tube by subsequent identification and quantification with GC-MS. Method two is based on sampling on 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) cartridges, derivatisation, elution, identification and quantification of the derivatives with LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry). N2 - Viele Konstruktions- und Baumaterialien, wie Holz, Kleber und Anstriche, sind mögliche Quellen für leicht flüchtige organische Verbindungen (VVOC) und flüchtige organische Verbindungen (VOC), wie Ameisen- und Essigsäure. Bedingt durch die hohe Dichtigkeit und den damit verbundenen niedrigen Luftwechsel in neuen Gebäuden können die Konzentrationen dieser gesundheitsgefährdenden Substanzen beträchtlich ansteigen. Um das Risiko zu minimieren, sollen Emissionen aus Bauprodukten identifiziert und quantifiziert werden. Mit der üblichen Standardmethode, die auf einer Luftprobenahme auf Tenax® und anschließender Analyse mittels GC-MS basiert, können diese Säuren nicht ausreichend detektiert werden. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist der Vergleich von zwei unterschiedlichen Methoden zur Bestimmung von Essig- und Ameisensäure. T1 - Domain formation in nano-patterned PZT thin films N2 - In this work, reactive magnetron-sputtered Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 thin films were used to fabricate well-ordered nanodot arrays by means of nanosphere lithography (NSL). NSL is based on a two-step etch process by means of, firstly adjusting the diameter of polystyrene spheres in the self-assembled polymeric nanosphere mask using reactive ion etching, and secondly transferring the mask to the substrate by ion milling with adjusted heights. Hence, structures with different aspect ratios can be fabricated. Piezoresponse force microscopy was used as the inspection tool on both non-patterned and patterned films. Both the topography and polarization out of plane and in plane was deduced in this mode. Grains of nanodots with low aspect ratio form domain structures comparable to domains in non-patterned films. In contrast to that, nanodots with a higher aspect ratio form particular structures. The in-plane amplitude images show mostly a bisectioned domain assembly, while the out-of-plane amplitude images show in some cases more complex structures like 'c'-shaped domains or multi-domains around a center domain. The patterning of the ferroelectric material was shown to affect the formation of ferroelectric domains. The initial polycrystalline, randomly-ordered films are re-oriented and show domain structures depending on nanodisc diameter and aspect ratio. This may enable tailoring of ferroelectric materials in their piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties by patterning. Eins der dafür entwickelten Konzepte ist das der thermischen Schutzschichten. Dabei kann durch den Auftrag einer keramischen Schicht die thermische Belastung der beschichteten Bauteile reduziert werden. In dieser Arbeit wird die Möglichkeit der Nutzung einer Laser-Thermoschock-Prüfeinrichtung zur Durchführung von thermo-zyklischen Versuchen an thermischen Schutzschichten untersucht. Die Probenerwärmung erfolgt hierbei durch einen fokussierten Laserstrahl, mit dem durch die gewählte Trajektoriengeometrie und Anpassung der Laserleistung eine homogene Temperaturverteilung auf der Oberflache erzeugt wird. Die für die Durchführung von zyklischen Versuchen notwendigen Erweiterungen der vorhandenen Prüfeinrichtung werden beschrieben, wozu die Entwicklung eines neuen Probenhalters und einer Test- und Auswerteroutine für die Experimente gehört. Zur Begutachtung der Entstehung und des Fortschritts von Schädigungen werden Schallemissionstechniken und thermografische Methoden eingesetzt, deren Möglichkeiten und Grenzen für die Nutzung im Rahmen der Experimente bestimmt werden. Außerdem umfasst die Arbeit eine umfassende temperaturabhängige Charakterisierung des für die thermische Schutzschicht verwendeten keramischen Materials. Hierbei ist besonders die Messung des E-Moduls mittels der dynamischen Resonanzmethode hervorzuheben, die eine selten genutzte Technik ist. Bei der Charakterisierung zeigen sich keine besonderen Abweichungen von den erwarteten Werten. Lediglich eine geringere Porosität als vom Hersteller erwartet und eine unveränderte Phasenzusammensetzung nach isothermer Auslagerung wurden beobachtet. Die bei den zyklischen Experimenten angestrebten Oberflächentemperaturen von über 1000 °C machen es nötig, die Absorption der Proben durch eine zusätzliche Beschichtung mit Magnetit zu erhöhen. Zur Messung der Temperaturverteilung auf der Probenoberfläche wird eine Infrarot- Kamera genutzt, die für diese Zwecke kalibriert wird. Die eingebaute aktive Druckluftkühlung der Probenruckseite erlaubt die Steuerung des Temperaturgradienten, besitzt aber noch Verbesserungspotenzial. Schon ohne aktive Kühlung der Proben ist ein Versuchsregime realisierbar, bei dem die thermischen Belastungen mit hoher Präzision reproduzierbar sind und mit dem die realen Einsatzbedingungen von keramischen Schutzschichten nachempfunden werden können. Die Entstehung und der Fortschritt von Schädigungen in Form von Delaminationen kann mit thermografischen Methoden und Schallemissionstechniken beobachtet werden. Bei der Ortung der Schallsignale zeigen sich die Grenzen der vorhandenen Ausrüstung. Eine relativ genaue Ortung der Quelle ist mit einer zeitaufwendigen manuellen Routine möglich, deren Ergebnis eine starke Abhängigkeit von der Signalqualität zeigt. Eine reduzierte Zonenortung mit einer automatischen Auswertung zeigt zufriedenstellende Ergebnisse. Eine Kombination der Ergebnisse der Zonenortung, der Analyse der Schallsignale und den thermografischen Analysen der Daten der Infrarot-Kamera ermöglicht eine sehr gute Visualisierung der Schädigungsentwicklung. Während erster Versuche konnten Delaminationsrisse in der keramischen Dammschicht erzeugt werden, die in der Nähe der Dammschicht-Haftschicht-Grenzschicht liegen. Dies entspricht einem Schadensbild, das durch eine hohe zyklische Belastung der Proben erreicht wird. Durch die Nutzung eines fokussierten Laserstrahls kommt es zu einer Temperaturüberhöhung im Bereich des Laserspots. Dies bewirkt, dass die thermozyklische Belastung der Proben noch um einen Thermoschockbeitrag erweitert wird. N2 - The finite nature of fossil fuel supply and the growing environmental awareness become increasingly stronger motivations for the development of efficient gas turbines and jet engines for power generation or as engines for land-, sea- and water-based vehicles. One concept developed for this purpose are thermal barrier coatings, where the thermal load of components is reduced by applying a ceramic coating onto the components. In this work the possibility to use a laser thermal shock facility for thermo-cyclic testing of thermal barrier coatings is examined. A focused laser beam is used for heating the sample and a homogeneous temperature distribution on the sample surface is achieved by the used trajectory and radial adjusted laser power. The required improvements of the existing testing facility are explained, including the development of a new sample holder and of the testing and evaluation routines for the experiments. For the assessment of the initiation and evolution of damages, acoustic emission and thermographic methods are used. The possibilities and limits of these methods are assessed during the experiments. The work also includes an extensive temperature dependent characterisation of the ceramic material used for the thermal barrier coating. In this part, the measurement of the Young’s modulus by a dynamic method is to be highlighted, as this is a rarely used technique. The characterisations show the expected values, except for a lower porosity as expected by the manufacturer and no significant phase changes during isothermal heat treatments. To reach sample surface temperatures above 1000 °C, it is necessary to increase the absorption by an additional coating of magnetite. The temperature distribution on the surface is measured by an infrared camera, which is calibrated for this purpose. With the incorporated active air cooling of the sample backside, the temperature gradient can be controlled, but still leaves room for improvements. Already without cooling, experiments can be completed, where the thermal loads are highly reproducible and comparable to real operation conditions. The development and evolution of delamination damages can be observed by acoustic Emission and thermographic methods. Sound location using the acoustic emission data shows the limits of the applied equipment. Good sound location results can be achieved by a time-consuming manual routine, but the results are highly dependent on the signal quality. A reduced zone location algorithm with an automatic analysis shows satisfying results. A combination of the zone location results, the analysis of the acoustic emission data and the thermographic analysis of the infrared camera data allows a very good visualisation of the damage evolution. First experiments showed delaminations located in the ceramic layer near the topcoat-bondcoatboundary, which corresponds to a failure mode induced by high cyclic loads of the samples. The use of a focused laser beam results in a local hot spot at the laser spot during heating. This adds a thermal shock component to the thermo-cyclic load during the experiments. Die Verwendung von WPCs ist in den vergangenen Jahren stetig gestiegen. Vor allem in ihrem Hauptanwendungsgebiet als Bodenbeläge verzeichnen WPC Materialien einen großen Marktanteil. Bis jetzt existiert jedoch noch keine Flammschutzlösung, die alle nötigen Anforderungen im Bauwesen erfüllt. Flammgeschützte Materialien sind jedoch vor allem für Innenanwendungen und im Bereich von Fluchtwegen unabdingbar. In dieser Arbeit werden zum einen grundlegende Mechanismen über das Brandverhalten von WPCs aufgeklärt. Zum anderen werden die Wirksamkeit und die Wirkungsweise verschiedener Flammschutzmitteln in WPC Materialien untersucht. Ein spezielles Augenmerk wird dabei auch auf Endprodukte aus WPC Materialien gelegt. WPC wurde dabei in seiner Hauptanwendung als Fußbodenbelag untersucht. Das Brandverhalten wurde für Materialien und Produkte mit Hilfe von „Cone Calorimeter“ Untersuchungen und „Radiant Panel Tests“ bestimmt. Zudem wurden numerische Simulationen genutzt, um den Einfluss verschiedener thermischer Materialparameter auf das Brandverhalten zu erforschen. Desweiteren wurde das thermische Zersetzungsverhalten mittels thermogravimetrischer Methoden und spektroskopischen Untersuchungen ermittelt. Auf dessen Grundlage konnten Abbaumechanismen für WPC Materialen in Verbindung mit verschiedenen Flammschutzmitteln erstellt werden. WPCs zeigen das gleiche Brandverhalten wie Holz, auf Grund des polymeren Anteils ist jedoch die Wärmefreisetzungsrate während der Verbrennung stark erhöht. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass alle untersuchten Flammschutzmittel einen positiven Effekt auf das Brandverhalten von WPCs hatten. Beste Ergebnisse wurden durch Ammonium-Polyphosphat, Paxymer und expandierbaren Graphit erzielt. Expandierbarer Graphit war besonders in Verbindung mit rotem Phosphor sehr wirksam, da der Phosphor den gebildeten Rückstand stabilisierte. Neben dem Einfluss von Flammschutzmitteln konnte gezeigt werden, dass für WPC Fußbodendielen auch andere Einflussfaktoren, wie die Geometrie und der Feuchtigkeitsgehalt eine wichtige Rolle spielen. So weisen Hohlkammerprofildielen im Vergleich zu Vollprofilproben zwar eine verminderte Menge an brennbarem Material auf, die Flammenausbreitung ist jedoch stark erhöht. N2 - Up to now only little knowledge has been recorded about the fire behavior and flame retardancy of wood-plastic composites (WPCs). The use of WPCs has increased continuously in recent years. Especially in their main field of application as a decking material, WPCs present a big share of the market. To date no flame-retarded solution has been introduced for WPC materials that fulfils the necessary requirements. But flameretarded materials are indispensable, especially for indoor use and the protection of escape routes. In this study basic knowledge about the fire behavior of WPCs is investigated first. Second, the effectiveness and mode of action of different flame-retardant additives is investigated. Special attention is drawn to products made of WPC material. Therefore WPC was further investigated in its main field of application as decking boards. The fire behavior of materials and products was investigated by means of cone calorimeter measurements as well as radiant panel tests. Furthermore numerical simulations were carried out to study the effects of various thermal material properties on burning behavior. Thermal decomposition was studied using thermogravimetric methods and spectroscopic investigations. Against this background, models for thermal decomposition pathways were built for combinations of WPC material with different flame retardants. WPCs show burning behavior similar to that of pure wood samples with an increased heat release rate due to polymeric fractions. It is shown that all investigated flame retardants had a positive effect on the burning behavior of WPCs. The best results were achieved by the flame retardants ammonium polyphosphate, Paxymer and expandable graphite. Especially in combination with red phosphorus, expandable graphite was highly effective because red phosphorus stabilized formed residue. Apart from the influence of flame retardants, other influencing factors like geometry and moisture content also played an important role concerning the flame retardancy of WPC decking boards. Indeed, hollow decking boards offer a reduced amount of combustible material, but their flame spread is increased in comparison to solid samples. For low stresses, the contribution to cavity growth by dislocation creep of the suirounding material can be neglected. However, grain boundaiy diffitsion is mainly driven by the local normal stiess acting on the grain boundaiy. Under creep conditions, even under a constant extemal load, an individual grain boundaiy generally experiences a time-varying normal stress, due to stress redistributions within the polycrystalline stiuctuie. Indeed, a constrained cavitating grain boundaiy is relieved, since matter is transported to and deposited in the grain boundaiy plane, which causes the adjoining giains to drill apart. A Simulation proceduie based on the use of complex holomoiphic fiinctions for solving the diffiision problem has been used to investigate multiple cavity growth on a grain boundaiy subjected to a constant normal stress. Inherently, the spatial resolution of electron microscopy is higher than that of optical methods. In this paper we present vibration modes (eigenmodes) of two different SFM cantilevers. Their nonlinear behavior is also explored in order to depict their 2nd harmonics (twice the fundamental frequency). Mit der Thermografie steht eine schnelle und berührungslose Prüftechnik zur Verfügung, die nicht zuletzt wegen der rapiden Entwicklung auf dem Gebiet der Infrarotkameras in letzter Zeit große Aufmerksamkeit erfährt. Typischerweise werden thermografisch oberflächennahe, parallel zur Oberfläche ausgedehnte Defekte nachgewiesen. In dieser Arbeit werden zwei untypische Prüfprobleme gelöst. An Punktschweißverbindungen wird mit der Linsengröße eine Struktur in der Mitte der Probe mittels Blitzlichtthermografie indirekt vermessen. Hier können typische Fehlerbilder wie Klebverbindungen und Spritzer sicher erkannt werden, was statistisch abgesichert durch eine Serienmessung und den Vergleich mit zerstörender Prüfung gezeigt wird. Ein Beispiel für orthogonal zur Oberfläche orientierte Fehlstellen stellen Risse dar, wie sie beispielsweise in Schweißnähtenn häufig auftreten. Neben der Entwicklung eines Verfahrens zur Detektion von Rissen, welches auf kommerziell erhältlichen Geräten aufbaut, wurde in Experimenten und Finite-Elemente-Simulationen untersucht, inwieweit sich auch die geometrischen Eigenschaften bestimmen lassen. Mit einem Verfahren, das ebenso wie die Methode zur Prüfung der Schweißpunkte auf der Analyse zeitlich und räumlich integraler Größen basiert, die vom thermischen Widerstand abhängen, ist die gleichzeitige Bestimmung von Winkel und Tiefe möglich. N2 - Non-destructive evaluation is a task of utmost importance for both, the economic point of view and to guarantee the required safety and reliability of technical systems. Thermography is a fast and contactless technique which received continued attention not least through the significant price drop at the infrared camera market. It is typically used to detect near-surface defects which are expanded parallel to the surface. This thesis deals with two non-standard inspection tasks. With the weld lens diameter of spot welds, a feature in the sample's geometrical center is indirectly sized by ash thermography. The presented method is suitable to distinguish typical error classes like stick welds or expulsions. This fact is validated by statistical evaluations of thermographic and destructive test series. As an example for perpendicularly oriented imperfections, surface cracks are investigated, which can be a major problem at welding seams. A technique for detecting cracks entirely based on commercially available equipment is developed. In addition, the accessibility of geometric characteristics of cracks was examined by experiments and FEM-simulations. Similar to the method developed for assessing spot welds, an approach based on the analysis of spatial and temporal integral quantities which depend on the thermal resistance is used. In doing so, the simultaneous determination of crack angle and depth is possible. Organic-based friction materials have reached their limitations regarding higher power densities. Engineering ceramics such as alumina (Al2O3) or silicon carbide (SiC) offer a great potential since remarkably higher thermal and mechanical loading is possible. However, the tribological performance of these monolithic ceramics is still insufficient. The aim of the present study was to assess the potential of a laser-assisted surface modification process in order to improve the tribological performance with regard to the application in dry friction systems. Therefore, commercially available alumina was modified using a newly developed laser-assisted preheating process and subsequent melting of the ceramic’s surface using a CO2-laser and modification by additives such as TiC, TiN, B4C, WC, ZrB2, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Ti. A systematic variation of additives and process parameters led to different multiphase microstructures. Subsequently, these were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and surface analysis methods (wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). Finally, the tribological properties were investigated using a laboratory tribometer. The surface-modified ceramics were tested in unidirectional sliding motion against steel disks. The tribological results of the surface-modified ceramics were compared to those of monolithic Al2O3 and SiC ceramics and showed a reduced dependence of friction coefficient on sliding velocity. Moreover, the multi-phase ceramics possessed a higher wear resistance than the monolithic ones. To fix the ceramic powder we used a femtosecond laser, which causes a thin surface melting of the metal. It is a requirement to prove that the laser irradiation would not reduce the lifetime of implants. Here we present the results of mechanical stability tests, determined by the rotating bending fatigue strength of sample rods. After describing the sample surfaces and their modifications caused by the laser treatment we give evidence for an unchanged mechanical stability. This applies not only to the ceramic fixation but also to a comparatively strong laser ablation. Iron meteorites have been formed under unimaginable cooling rates of a few ten Kelvins per million years so that the observable transformation of the formerly huge Fe-Ni single crystals of taenite occurred under nearly-equilibrium conditions. Octahedrites (meteorites having a Ni content between 6...15%) are characterized by ribbons of the low-temperature Fe-Ni phase kamacite separated by rims of residual taenite. This very specific feature is known as Widmanstaetten structure and has been investigated by synchrotron radiation in order to cover a higher volume fraction for a statistically relevant description of orientation relationships. However, plessite – a microstructure mainly consisting of the same phases – reflects the orientation relationship between kamacite and taenite as well. For their characterization, a scanning electron microscope is very suitable in order to investigate crystal orientations or identify phases. Despite the apparently ideal formation circumstances of iron meteorites, Ni concentration profiles prove non-equilibrium conditions. Pinholes remained as permanent surface damage after removing the mildew mycelium. The extent of the damage differed in dependence of the kind of the coating. By tracing the images and profiles of the coating surfaces systematically over all phases of weathering and the subsequent cleaning procedure, a connection between formation of pinholes and mildew growth could be found. Outdoor weathering tests in other regions of Florida as well as in Europe and Australia showed that pinholes caused by mildew attack could also be found in all other locations, but always to a lower extent than in South Florida. The standardised mildew tests EN ISO 846 and MIL-STD 810F for laboratory exposure failed to reproduce the formation of pinholes. N2 - A series of MoS2 and combined MoS2/ta-C coatings were prepared by lasercontrolled arc evaporation (Laser-Arc) in order to study the tribological coating behaviour under vacuum and atmospheric conditions. Very low friction coefficients down to 0.005 were measured under high vacuum. By using a ta-C underlayer beneath the MoS2 a increased lifetime up to 5×105 load cycles could be obtained. This doping strengthens the laminates, whose original properties are weaker than those of prepregs. Besides the shear strength, compression strength and the damage tolerance, the mode of action of the nanoparticles in resin and in CFRP is also analyzed. It thereby reveals that the hydroxyl groups and even more a taurine modification of the boehmites' surface alter the elementary polymer morphology. Consequently a new flow and reaction comportment, lower glass transition temperatures and shrinkage, as well as a changed mechanical behavior occur. Due to a structural upgrading of the matrix (higher shear stiffness, reduced residual stress), a better fiber-matrix adhesion, and differing crack paths, the boehmite nanoparticles move the degradation barrier of the material to higher loadings, thus resulting in considerably upgraded new CFRP. Although the process is well known, it is ambiguously either assumed that magnetite or maghemite is obtained. The first part of our study clarifies this question using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. For further processing of the nanoparticles, i.e., for giving them a surface functionality or incorporating them into composites, it is important to break the agglomerates and individualize the particles at first. This can effectively be done with nitric acid treatment. The influence of this process on the particles chemistry and structure was analyzed in great detail using X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption, and smallangle X-ray scattering. In contrast to our expectation, no oxidation from magnetite (Fe3O4) to maghemite (γ- Fe2O3) was found; the formal valence of the particles in any case is magnetite (Fe3O4). Instead, an increase in the particles' surface disorder was discovered from X-ray absorption analyses and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The acid treatment roughens and distorts the surface of the nanoparticles which is connected with an increased spin disorder. Die Stickstoffverfügbarkeit ist für diesen Abbau entscheidend, und diazotrophe Bakterien können durch Fixierung von atmosphärischem N2 Stickstoff auf Holz anreichern. Der gemeinsame Abbau durch Basidiomyceten und Diazotrophe könnte zu hohen Abbauraten führen, da N2-Fixierung große Mengen an ATP benötigt, welche durch Celluloseabbau regeneriert werden. In dieser Arbeit wurde diese Interaktion durch Messungen des Stickstoffanteils sowie der δ15N-Werte in der Biomasse untersucht. Außerdem wurde die Aktivität der Basidiomyceten unter Einfluss unterschiedlicher Stickstoffquellen bestimmt. Die Messungen des Stickstoffanteils in der Biomasse der Basidiomyceten Oligoporus placenta und Trametes versicolor bewiesen die Aufnahme organischen Stickstoffs, sogar wenn nur Spuren verfügbar waren. Darüber hinaus förderten Harnstoff und Ammoniumchlorid das Wachstum von T. versicolor. In Experimenten unter einer 15N2/O2-Atmosphäre wurde ermittelt, dass die diazotrophen Bakterien Azotobacter croococcum, Beijerinckia acida und Novosphingobium nitrogenifigens etwa 1– 13% ihres Stickstoffbedarfs durch N2-Fixierung decken. Wurden Diazotrophe und Basidiomyceten gemeinsam kultiviert,konnte nur von B. acida N2 fixiert und an beide Basidiomyceten übertragen werden. A. croococcum und N. nitrogenifigens wiesen keine Aktivität auf. Die Effekte der drei Stickstoffquellen, organischer Stickstoff im Medium, organischer Stickstoff in Splintholz sowie N2 aus der Luft, auf die Biomasse der Basidiomyceten wurden in Experimenten nach einem statistischen Versuchsplan bestimmt. Organischer Stickstoff als Medienbestandteil förderte das Wachstum beider Basidiomyceten signifikant. In zwei weiteren Versuchsreihen wurde die Stickstoffquelle im Medium durch das Bakterium B. acida ersetzt. Luftstickstoff begünstigte das Bakterienwachstum, so dass die Biomassen der Basidiomyceten gegenüber N2-freien Bedingungen verringert wurden. Das Vorhandensein von B. acida hatte einen geringfügig fördernden Effekt auf die Biomasse von T. versicolor aber keinen Effekt auf die Biomasse von O. placenta. Im Gegensatz zu den zuvor genannten Organismen kommen Hypholoma fasciculare und einige, teils isolierte und charakterisierte Proteobakterien gemeinsam in der Natur vor. Das Wachstum der Biomasse von H. fasciculare und von Proteobakterien wurde durch organischen Stickstoff, Harnstoff und Ammoniumchlorid gefördert. Die N2-Fixierung der Proteobakterien war zwar signifikant jedoch geringfügig, so dass sie mit Adsorption an Stelle von Nitrogenaseaktivität interpretiert wurde. Die Konkurrenz von H. fasciculare und Proteobakterien um die gleichen Stickstoffquellen wurde als wahrscheinlicher betrachtet als die Stickstoffanreicherung durch Diazotrophie. N2 - Saprotrophic basidiomycetes decompose wood in aerobic environments and can cause economic damage. The availability of nitrogen is determining for decomposition, and diazotrophic bacteria might enhance the nitrogen availability by fixation of atmospheric N2. Simultaneous decomposition by basidiomycetes and diazotrophs may intensify decomposition, because N2 fixation requires ATP, which could be provided during cellulose decomposition. In this study, the interaction was analysed by measurements of the nitrogen content and the δ15N values in biomass. Besides, the activity of basidiomycetes, influenced by different nitrogen sources, was determined. The analysis of the nitrogen content in biomass of Oligoporus placenta and Trametes versicolor proved the efficient uptake of organic nitrogen by wood-decomposing fungi even if only traces were available. In the presence of urea and ammonium chloride, the growth of T. versicolor was intensified. At cultivations in a 15N2/O2 atmosphere, the diazotrophic bacteria Azotobacter croococcum, Beijerinckia acida and Novosphingobium nitrogenifigens covered 1 to 13% of the nitrogen in their biomass by N2 fixation. If basidiomycetes and diazotrophs were co-cultivated, only B. acida fixed N2 and transferred it to both fungi. A. croococcum and N. nitrogenifigens did not coexist with the fungi. The effects of the nitrogen sources, i.e., organic nitrogen in the medium, organic nitrogen in sapwood and N2 from air, on the biomass of the mentioned basidiomycetes were determined in experiments according to full-factorial experimental plans. Organic nitrogen in the medium increased the growth of both basidiomycetes significantly. In additional experiments, the nitrogen source in the medium was replaced by an inoculum of B. acida. Then, atmospheric N2 supported the bacterial growth, which caused a significant decrease of basidiomycetal biomass compared to N2-free conditions. The presence of B. acida increased the biomass of T. versicolor to a low extent, but had no effect on the biomass of O. placenta. In contrast to the previously mentioned organisms, Hypholoma fasciculare and proteobacteria occur together in nature. In experiments, the growth of biomass of H. fasciculare and proteobacteria was supported by organic nitrogen, urea and ammonium chloride. The N2 fixation of the bacteria was significant but amounted to a low extent and was therefore explained by adsorption and not by nitrogenase activity. Competition between H. fasciculare and proteobacteria for the same nitrogen sources appeared more probable than N enrichment by diazotrophic activity. As an example of such components the bolted trunnion system of heavy packages are analysed in this paper. According to the German guideline BAM-GGR 012 created by the BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing for analysis and assessment of bolted lid and trunnion Systems, the finite element (FE) method is to be used preferably in the analysis of such kind of structures to obtain more accurate and detailed Information about their stressing. The FE model of a trunnion System should include the trunnion itself, the bolts and an appropriate part of the packaging wall with necessary contact conditions on all interfaces between these components. The use of solid finite elements, which is generally recommended in the BAM-GGR 012 guideline, leads to local stress and strain fields as a result of the calculation. The modelling strategy, e.g. the way of modelling interaction between the components of the trunnion System, has an essential impact on these local values. The effect of different assumptions in a FE model is demonstrated in this paper using the calculation results for a reference trunnion System. The approaches for preparation and Interpretation of results in connection with local or nominal assessment criteria are discussed as well. Numerically, the pressure field is determined by a matrix method based on the Rayleigh integral that take into account the multiple wave reflections that occur between the transducer and the reflector. The numerical pressure field is compared with the acoustic pressure measured by an earplug microphone, that is connected to a hollow needle. The tip of the needle is moved by a µm translation stage through the field and the signal is recorded using a lock-in amplifier locked to the levitator frequency. The pressure field obtained numerically show good agreement with that obtained experimentally. T1 - Osteocytes characterization using synchrotron radiation CT and finite element analysis N2 - Since a correlation between osteocyte number and their morphology with bone aging or its response to pharmacological treatment appears to exist, a methodology to characterize osteocytes from bone biopsies becomes important. In this chapter, the usage of synchrotron measurements, algorithms for image analysis (Amira, ZIB), and the finite element method using parallelized computational resources for topological analysis of osteocytes is explained and discussed. Different routines normally applied for material characterization of network-like structures (skeletonization) have been adapted to visualize osteocytes along bone cement lines at high resolution (2.174 µm). The different steps concerning to counting osteocytes and analyzing the mechanical behavior of bones are illustrated with an example. Our findings showed a clear alignment of the osteocytes along the cement lines. Interestingly, at the regions near the bone surface with reduced mineralization grade, osteocytes were mainly aligned along the close to high mineralized region. Apparently, not only osteocytes number is reduced with aging but their size increases and they become sparely distributed in comparison with the healthy bone samples from the human mandible. Automatic tetrahedron mesh generation using the "tetragen" tool from Amira worked adequately for meshing the biopsies with a resolution of 20 µm, but meshing biopsies with osteocytes embedded on the bone matrix from the SR-CT samples consumes an enormous amount of time, due to necessary adjustments for avoiding intersections and conserving model closeness. The resulting CH2OH and CO2H- terminated polylactones were subjected in situ to azeotropic polycondensations. With Bi-triflate and temperatures, the polycondensations were not much successful and involved side reactions. With ZnCl2, and especially SnCl2, considerably higher molar masses were achieved. The substitution of toluene for chlorobenzene for refluxing gave better results. The polycondensations broadened the molar mass distribution of the ROP-based prepolymers, and polydispersities between 1.4–1.8 were obtained. The MALDI–TOF mass spectra revealed that the polycondensations significantly enhanced the fraction of rings due to efficient 'end-biting' reactions. By comparison with copolymerization experiments and Sn methoxide-initiated polymerizations, it was demonstrated that equilibration reactions, such as the formation of rings by 'back-biting,' did not occur. A scanning electron microscope with an attached energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM/EDX) is highlighted as a powerful tool for the advanced characterization of such complex fire residues, since it offers high resolution in combination with both good depth of field and analysis of chemical composition. Two examples are presented: First, comprehensive SEM/EDX investigation on a complex structured fire residue of glass fibre reinforced polyamide 6,6 (PA 66-GF) flame retarded by diethylaluminium phosphinate, melamine polyphosphate and some zinc borate. A multilayered surface crust (thickness ~ 24 µm) covers a rather hollow area stabilized by GF glued together. The resulting efficient thermal insulation results in self-extinguishing before pyrolysis is completed, even under forced-flaming combustion. Second, sophisticated, quasi online SEM/EDX imaging of the formation of residual protection layer in layered silicate epoxy resin nanocomposites (LSEC). Burning specimens were quenched in liquid nitrogen for subsequent analyses. To obtain a highly controlled mixing process for the polymer/THF- and the water-phase, we employed micro mixers with different mixing geometries. The high impact of this preparation method on the self-assembling process was verified by TEM and DLS characterization of the obtained structures. Spherical micelles, vesicles and worm-like micelles were found depending on the parameters of mixing. By additional parameter adjustment in the vesicle regime, the size of the assembled vesicles was controlled between 45 and 100 nm. For such a comparison, special properties of real Vibration data introduce uncertainties, such as low signal-to-noise ratios, non-stationary or nonwhite ambient excitation, non-linear behavior and many more. Recently, Statistical damage detection algorithms based on stochastic subspace Identification have been proposed that take into account the uncertainties in the data. Building upon the uncertainty modeling, the next step in the view of the authors is to utilize damage detection algorithm information in the context of the structural reliability theory. Therefore, this paper introduces an approach for the updating of the structural reliability with damage detection algorithm information. Two steps are described namely the determination of a probability of detection (PoD) distribution function for damage detection algorithms accounting for the relevant uncertainties and the concept of Bayesian updating of the structural reliability. T1 - Synergistic use of talc in halogen-free flame retarded polycarbonate/Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene blends N2 - Pyrolysis, flammability, fire behavior, melt viscosity, and gas diffusion of bisphenol A polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS) were investigated, with bisphenol A bis(diphenyl phosphate) (BDP), with 10 wt.% talc and with BDP in combination with 5, 10 and 20 wt.% talc, respectively. Compared to PC/ABS, PC/ABS + BDP results in an increased decomposition temperature of PC, a higher char yield, a significantly increased LOI, a V-0 classification in UL 94, a reduced peak heat release rate (pHRR), and a reduced total heat release (THR) in the cone calorimeter. This efficient flame retardancy is due to mechanisms in both the gas and condensed phases. PC/ABS + 10 wt.% talc shows a decrease in the PC decomposition temperature. The fire behavior is improved in part compared to PC/ABS, with an increased LOI and reduced pHRR. PC/ABS + BDP + 10 wt.% talc shows a strong synergism in LOI, a V-0 classification, and a decrease in pHRR, whereas THR is slightly increased compared to PC/ABS + BDP. Talc decreases the gas diffusion and enhances the flow limit for low shear rates, both of which influence the pyrolysis and flammability results. Further, talc improves the protection properties of the fire residues. Nevertheless it also partly suppresses flame inhibition and the charring effect of BDP. The synergism between BDP and talc in LOI is obtained even for low talc loadings in PC/ABS + BDP + talc, whereas for higher loadings saturation is observed. Some of these calculations are denoted as "filtering". Filtering is always a trade-off between an enhancement of data quality and a loss of information. The standard reconstruction technique for CT data is the filtered back-projection. Additionally to the high-pass filter inherent to this technique, a suppression of high-frequency noise is in most cases also necessary. Many different possible filter algorithms are found in the literature. Although their effect on the signal-to-noise ratio and the spatial resolution is well-studied, it is not obvious how the different filters affect the determination of the object's surface in the reconstructed data and, thus, the results of dimensional CT measurements. We compare the results of industrial dimensional CT measurements obtained at the same data set of a calibrated reference standard – a calotte cube – when using different filters and discuss the implications. Mit der vorliegenden Arbeit ist deshalb das Ziel verfolgt worden, dass Materialverhalten repräsentativer Elastomerwerkstoffe in Abhängigkeit von der Temperatur zu verstehen und daraus dann abzuleiten, bis zu welcher Temperatur eine daraus hergestellte Dichtung unter Berücksichtigung der jeweiligen Einsatzbedingungen ihre Funktion noch sicher erfüllen kann. Ausgehend von der in der Literatur beschriebenen Aussage, dass eine Dichtung auch unterhalb der „Glasübergangstemperatur“ funktionsfähig ist, wurde der Einfluss des Glas-Gummi-Übergangs auf das Dichtungsversagen untersucht. Zunächst wurden dazu die Glasübergangstemperaturen an einer Vielzahl von Elastomeren mit gebräuchlichen Verfahren bestimmt, um diese mit dem Verhalten der Dichtung vergleichen zu können. Weiterhin wurde im Rahmen der Arbeit eine neue Charakterisierungsmethode des Tieftemperaturverhaltens von Elastomeren entwickelt, die die bisher für Dichtungen eingesetzte Normprüfung des Druckverformungsrests nachstellt. Mit dieser Methode ist im Vergleich zur Normprüfung jedoch eine deutlich schnellere und automatisierbare Untersuchung des Materialverhaltens gegeben. Darüber hinaus ist durch eine modellgestützte Auswertung eine Extrapolation der Messdaten auf zusätzliche Temperaturen möglich, wodurch der experimentelle Aufwand weiter reduziert wird. Zur temperaturabhängigen Charakterisierung des Versagensvorgangs an realen Bauteilen wurde deren Dichtverhalten mittels eines dafür entwickelten Versuchsstandes untersucht. Die festgestellte Abhängigkeit der Versagenstemperatur vom Verpressgrad konnte unter Verwendung der Ergebnisse aller angewandten Charakterisierungsmethoden für die hier untersuchten statisch beanspruchten Dichtungen erklärt werden. Zudem lassen sich aus dem mit Hilfe des Zeit-Temperatur- Superpositionsprinzips gewonnenen Informationen zur Zeitabhängigkeit der Materialeigenschaften auch Aussagen zum Verhalten von dynamisch beanspruchten Dichtungen ableiten. Mit dem Ergebnis der Arbeit zum Verständnis des Verhaltens von Elastomerdichtungen bei tiefen Temperaturen wird die gezielte Beurteilung und Auswahl von sicherheitsrelevanten Dichtsystemen in Zukunft vereinfacht. N2 - Elastomeric seals are of high importance as machine parts and construction elements, but in spite of this the low temperature limit for the use of a seal was not fully understood. Hence, the required safety relevant evaluation of the lowest acceptable operating seal temperature is difficult. Therefore the presented work was aimed to understand the temperature dependent material behaviour of representative elastomers and to conclude from this knowledge the low temperature limit down to which such seals could safely fulfil the desired requirements. Starting with the published statement that a seal can safely work below its glass Transition temperature the influence of the glass-rubber-transition was investigated. At first the glass-rubber-transition temperatures of the selected elastomers were determined applying several techniques to allow a comparison with the behaviour of the seals during component tests. Furthermore a new method to characterise the low temperature behaviour of elastomers was developed that emulates the key features of the standardised compression set test used for seal materials. In comparison to the standardized test this new method allows a much faster measurement that can be automatically performed. Using a model based data analysis an extrapolation of the results to different temperatures can be performed and therefore the necessary measuring expenditure can be additionally reduced. For the temperature dependent characterisation of the failure process of real seals a measurement setup was designed and the materials behaviour was investigated. By use of the results of all applied characterisation techniques the observed dependence of the failure temperature on the degree of compression could be explained for the investigated seals under static load. Additionally information about the behaviour of such seals under dynamic load could be gained from the time dependent material behaviour by use of the time temperature superposition relationship. By application of the gained insight into the behaviour of elastomeric seals at low temperatures the evaluation and selection of safety relevant seal systems will be simplified in the future. Based on different examples of our work over the last 10 years, it is shown that innovation and co-operation are used to tackle actualtasks and opportunities, and that multi-methodical approaches and key experiments are sufficient to generate a deep understanding of phenomena as well as systematic investigations and comprehensive assessments. This needs a great technical effort for reliable electrical contact and sufficient sound coupling of the ultrasonic probes for fast scans. An adaption for different bore diameters is realised by replacement of the whole probe holder. The presented technique works with a rotationally Symmetrie array whose transducer elements are arranged at a cone and which is centred placed in the bore. The refracted angle is defined by the cone angle and the ratio of the sound velocities in the couplant and in the shaft body. The rotation of the sound beam is mainly realised by an electronic scan of the active aperture without a mechanical movement. Small steps of the rotational angle and the beam forming are realised by electronic control of the active element group. Thus the inspection time for a shaft is reduced and the complex and trouble-prone RF-signal transmission via a commutator ring is not required. The conical probe is applicable for a wide ränge of bore diameters (e.g. 30 - 70 mm). The adaption is exclusively realised by the different diameters of the blinding for the coupling area. The benefit of the new approach are the shorter inspection time, the reduced maintenance effort for the testing System and the applicability of the conical phased array probe for different bore diameters. Die akustischen Methoden im Bereich des Niederfrequenz-Ultraschalls nehmen hierbei eine zentrale Rolle ein. Mit der Einführung von kontaktmittelfrei arbeitenden Prüfköpfen gelang es schließlich, eine breite Akzeptanz für diese Untersuchungsmethode in der Praxis zu erzielen. Bedingt durch die oft großen Untersuchungsflächen, rückte die Dauer der Messdatenaufnahme unter wirtschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten immer mehr in den Fokus der Forschung. Eine Optimierung der Messzeit durch den Einsatz von vollautomatischen Scannern oder von parallel arbeitenden Prüfköpfen ist nur einem begrenzten Umfang möglich. In der Grundlagenarbeit „Luftgekoppeltes Ultraschallecho-Verfahren für Betonbauteile“ zeigt Herr Dr.- Ing. B. Gräfe das Potenzial der berührungslos arbeitenden Schallanregung hinsichtlich der Verringerung der Messzeit auf. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, grundlegende Fragestellungen für eine baupraktische Anwendung des luftgekoppelten Ultraschallecho-Verfahrens zu beantworten. Die sich ausbildenden Wellenarten hängen maßgeblich vom Winkel, unter dem der Schallimpuls aus der Luft auf die Oberfläche auftrifft und dem Abstand des Prüfkopfes zum Bauteil ab. Ein zentraler Punkt ist daher die genaue Kenntnis der Eigenschaften der angeregten Schallfelder unter Berücksichtigung dieser Randbedingungen. Mit der physikalischen Beschreibung des Schallfeldes ist es möglich, das Messverfahren hinsichtlich der verschieden gestellten Prüfaufgaben zu optimieren und Auswertungs- algorithmen zur sicheren Interpretation der Messdaten zu entwickeln. Recherchen zum Thema der Schallfeldanalysen in Festkörpern im Niederfrequenz-Bereich ergaben, dass auch die Kenntnisse zu den bereits weitverbreiteten Kontaktprüfköpfen nicht in einem ausreichenden Umfang messtechnisch abgesichert waren. Daher wurden diese ebenfalls in das Messprogramm aufgenommen. Für die Bestimmung der Kennwerte des Schallfeldes von Ultraschallprüfköpfen wurde ein Prüfstand geplant und gebaut. Das Konzept des Prüfstandes ist so ausgerichtet, dass neben der räumlichen Erfassung des Schallfeldes zusätzlich die stofflichen Einflüsse des durchschallten Mediums erfasst werden. Dies wird durch die Messung an halbkugelförmigen Probekörpern mit unterschiedlichen Durchmessern erreicht. Der Schwerpunkt der Untersuchungen liegt auf dem Werkstoff Beton. Bei dem Probenmaterial handelt es sich um einen selbstverdichtenden Beton, dessen Zusammensetzung geringe schallschwächende Eigenschaften aufweist. Die Rezepturen für diese Betone wurden an der Technischen Universität Berlin entwickelt. Es wurden Serien von jeweils vier Probekörpern unterschiedlicher Materialeigenschaften hergestellt. Variiert wurde bei den Serien der Probekörper die Größe der Gesteinskörnung, um eine erste Einschätzung des Einflusses der Materialzusammen- setzung auf das Schallfeld vornehmen zu können. Die Messdaten werden mit einer eigenständig entwickelten Software aufgezeichnet und ausgewertet. Aus den experimentell gewonnenen Kennwerten werden anschließend erstmalig räumliche Schallfelder für den Niederfrequenz-Bereich im Beton berechnet. Die Verifikation der Messergebnisse erfolgte durch den Einsatz unterschiedlicher Simulationsverfahren, die durch Partnerinstitute durchgeführt wurden. Im baupraktischen Teil der Arbeit werden die Erfahrungen aus realen Schadensanalysen präsentiert. Hierauf aufbauend wurden im Rahmen einer parallel laufenden Forschungsarbeit Probekörper hergestellt, an denen erste Untersuchungen mit einer luftgekoppelten Schallanregung durchgeführt wurden. Zu diesem Zweck wurden neben den Schallfeldanalysen Parameterstudien zu den optimalen Bedingungen der Schallanregung notwendig. Insbesondere die Oberflächenwellen und deren störender Einfluss wurden hierbei systematisch untersucht. Neben der Präsentation erfolgreicher Ergebnisse werden auch die gegenwärtigen Grenzen des Verfahrens aufgezeigt. N2 - Using intensive practical research, the spectrum of non-destructive testing methods has been able to be clearly extended in civil engineering over recent decades. Low frequency ultrasound plays a central role in the acoustic methods in this sector. Finally, with the introduction of contact agent-free testing heads, success was achieved in gaining wide acceptance for this Investigation method in practice. Conditioned by the often large surfaces, the duration of the measuring data itself came ever more into focus of the research, with regard to an economic point of view. An optimisation of the measuring time with the application of fully automatic scanners or from in-parallel working test heads is possible only to a limited extent. In the basic underlying work, qualified engineer Mr. B Gräfe shows with his work "Luftgekoppeltes Ultraschallecho-Verfahren für Betonbauteile“, the potential of contact agent-free clangour with regard to the reduction of overall measuring time. It is the aim of this work to provide answers to the basic questions regarding practical construction problems of the air-coupled ultrasonic echo procedure. The resulting waves depend on the angle at which the sound impulse meets the surface, as well as the distance of the test head to the component itself. A central criteria is the precise knowledge of the qualities of the animated sound fields whilst taking into consideration these Framework conditions. Using a physical description of the sound field it is possible to optimise the test results with regard to the various measuring procedures and develop evaluation algorithms for secure interpretation of the measuring data. Research on the subject of sound field analyses in solid states in low frequency Areas proved that the knowledge regarding widespread contact test heads has not been sufficiently metrologically secured. For this reason, these were also considered in the measuring programme. For regulation of the sound field core values for the ultrasonic test heads, a test bench was planned and constructed. The test bench concept was so targeted that, in addition to the spatial capture of the sound field, the seismic influence of the material could also be registered. This was achieved using hemispherically-shaped test bodies with differing diameters. The main focus of the investigation was on concrete. The test material was self-compacting concrete, and ist composition displayed low sound-proofing qualities. The recipes for this concrete were developed at the University of Technology in Berlin. These were developed as a series of four test bodies, in each case. The variable introduced were a size variety of coarse aggregate in order to obtain an initial idea of the influence of the material composition on the sound field. The measuring data was recorded on independently developed software and evaluated. Using the data gleaned from the experimental stage, initial calculations for spatial sound fields were made to assess low frequency response in concrete. The verification of these measuring results occurred via the application of a variety of simulation procedures which were carried out by partner institutes. In the practical construction section, experiences from genuine damage analyses are presented. Building on these results, test bodies were constructed in a parallel-running research project, whose initial investigations were carried out using an air-coupled sound source. For this purpose, parameter studies to ascertain the optimum conditions of the sound source became necessary, in addition to the sound field analyses. In particular, surface waves and their annoying influence were systematically examined. As well as the presentation of successful results, the present borders of the procedure have also been indicated.
