Folgende Ergebnisse wurden u. a. erzielt: 1. N2 - Our research project had two aims in addressing the increased occurrence of ASR damage on German motorway sections built before 2005: firstly, to establish the cause of the darker discolouration around the joints of concrete road surface that occurs in conjunction with ASR damage. Secondly, based on the status and damage report, it aimed to comparatively evaluate the residual ASR damage potential of test samples from three federal motorway sections of one-layer and three of twolayer pavement, showing different levels of ASR damage. We obtained the following results (among others): 1. Dark discolouration Experimental evidence using non-destructive testing methods showing that dark discolouration of concrete road surfaces near joints is due to increased moisture in the concrete boundary zone: NDT findings successfully validated by weighing and drying test. 2. Condition of sampled motorway sections and evaluation of ASR test methods used: • discovery of horizontal cracks located near transverse contraction joint in all motorway sections with ASR damage, • determination of maximum mean penetration depth of sodium from 20 to 45 mm and of chloride from 15 to 60 mm in sample as extracted; no correlation with the ASR damage category of the relevant motorway section, • evidence of simultaneous occurrence of DEF on all ASR-damaged motorway sections in sample as extracted, • no significant reduction of splitting tensile strength due to increased ASR at slab edge, • increased ASR residual damage potential found on four of the six motorway sections tested primarily with ASR performance tests, • increased expansion found during performance tests on half shells consisting of upper and lower concrete compared to prisms taken separately from upper and lower concrete, • 40°C and 60°C concrete prism tests revealed no noticeable reactions in almost all existing concrete types that showed irregularities in the performance test. Suggested cause: high and deep levels of alkali leaching determined by LIBS. N2 - The following four aggregates (GK) of varying grades of alkali sensitivity were examined for their microstructure-dependent solubility behavior: • GK1 (EIII-S) gravel with high quarz content • GK2 (EIII-S) greywacke (crushed stone) • GK3 (EI-S) quarz-feldspar-porphyry (crushed stone) • GK4 (EI-S) gravel with high sandstone content Pore structure analysis was carried out both on single grains using comparative 3D-CT and BET tests, and on grain samples of individual grain fractions (excluding the 16/22 mm fraction) using water absorption and BET. A software tool for visualizing and quantifying the externally accessible surfaces of single grains was developed, tested and successfully applied. This enabled us, among other things, to prove that single broken grains of greywacke and rhyolite have a much smaller externally accessible surface than grains of gravel of the same aggregate fraction. Due to the 3D-CT’s limited spatial resolution of 11 to 16.5 μm, BET was used to determine a two to three powers of ten higher specific surface. In relation to the porosity tests of the grain samples, it should be noted that in some cases, counterdirectional trends between open porosity and specific surface were determined. This is of central importance in relation to the SiO2 and Al2O3 dissolved from the aggregate in the solubility tests in 1 M KOH with defined addition of NaCl. The solubility tests on the grain samples of specific fractions showed that the gradual increase of the NaCl content in the eluate from 0 to 10 M.-% resulted in increased SiO2 solubility and reduced leaching of Al2O3. It was striking in this context that the solubility of Al2O3 in GK4 with no or little addition of NaCl gives by far the highest values. The additional solubility tests carried out on single grains, that were previously subjected to CT testing, in 1 M KOH solution with 1 M.-% added NaCl showed that in the types of aggregate examined, a correlation between the SiO2 and Al2O3 in eluate and the absolute BET surface is only occasionally demonstrable. This is probably due to the fact that solubility behavior is decisively influenced by other parameters in addition to the surface (e.g. by the mineralogical composition of individual grains). The concrete tests according to ARS 04/2013 carried out parallel to the solubility tests showed that GK4’s alkali sensitivity in both concrete tests with added alkali must be evaluated differently. For example, independent of the prescribed pessimal road surface concrete formula, GK4 can only be classified as alkali sensitive under cyclic storage. However petrographic microscopy could not confirm the findings of very marked ASR in GK4. The same applies to the evaluation of alkali sensitivity in GK2 with the concrete tests according to the German Committee for Structural Concrete (DAfStb)’s Alkali Guidelines. In this case too, GK2 should not be classified as alkali sensitive in 60 °C concrete testing, but only in 40 °C concrete testing. The LIBS analyses carried out on the vertical cross-section of the test specimens after the various concrete tests showed that almost equally high sodium and chloride levels were found in the core area after the 60 °C concrete prism test with 10 % NaCl solution and after cyclic storage with NaCl application. Contrary to expectations, the surfaces of samples after NaCl application showed a decrease in sodium and an increase in chloride. In the 40°C and 60°C concrete prism tests, sodium was depleted up to a maximum depth of approx. 30 mm and 20 mm respectively. Subsequent correlative observations between the findings of the 60°C concrete prism test with alkali application, and the solubility tests on the samples of specific grain fractions in 1 M KOH solution with defined NaCl addition, are very promising. In the case of exposed aggregate concrete, for example, the fraction-specific weighted excess SiO2 to in the eluate after 56 days with added 0.5 M.-% NaCl unrelated to the BET surface results in the same classification of the four aggregates examined as the expansions in the 60 °C concrete prism test with 3% NaCl solution. In addition, the expansions found in the 60 °C concrete prism test with 10% NaCl solution correlated with the weighted excess SiO2 in eluate with added 2 M.-% NaCl without relation to the BET surface. Only in the case of the concrete test in accordance with the Alkali Guidelines did the relationship of the excess SiO2 in the eluate to the BET surface prove to be productive. Due to the potential of the solubility test with added NaCl for the evaluation of alkali sensitivity of aggregates in road surface concrete, we recommend continuing with comparative tests between solubility tests of grain samples of the various fractions and the concrete tests in accordance with ARS O4/13 with the greatest possible number of aggregates and a precisely defined investigation scope. This resulted in a significant reduction of suitable aggregates. Against this background, borderline alkali-sensitive aggregates are to be made usable by adding an internal water repellent agent during concrete casting. The ASR avoidance strategy is based on the significant reduction of the penetration of water and de-icing salt solution into the concrete pavement. Laboratory tests show that, with a suitable active ingredient, the ASR damage process can be significantly reduced with internal hydrophobisation. The disadvantage is that this is associated with a deterioration of the mechanical properties and the resistance to freeze-thaw with de-icing salt. The aim of the ongoing research is to reduce these disadvantages through targeted modification of the hydrophobising agent and air-entraining agent. T1 - Internal water-repellent treatment - a novel strategy for mitigating alkali-aggregate reaction in concrete pavements T2 - Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reaction in Concrete N2 - To prevent future alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) damage, which has occurred frequently in the Germanhighway network in recent years, a new regulation has been drafted. This regulation severely limits the use of alkali-sensitive aggregates by requiring that their suitability be verified by certified inspectors using newly developed AAR concrete tests that involve the external supply of alkali. This has led to a significant limitation in the number of aggregates usable for concrete pavements. A novel AAR avoidance strategy is now being pursued, which aims to enable the use of borderline alkali-sensitive aggregates through the application of an internal water-repellent treatment. The addition of water repellents during concrete production should significantly reduce the ingress of water and external de-icing salts into the concrete pavement, thus reducing the potential for AAR damage. This paper presents the results of laboratory tests to assess the suitability of this new AAR prevention strategy. Representative, highly AAR-susceptible road paving concrete made with an alkali- sensitive greywacke and various water repellents were used as the basis for these experiments. The tests for concrete suitability included determining the conventional fresh and hardened concrete properties as well as concrete prism tests with external alkaline supply. Building on these results, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyses of de-icing-salt intrusion as well as microscopic examinations for verification of the AAR characteristics were carried out. The results of the AAR concrete tests with external alkaline supply support the conclusion that, when hydrophobic agents containing a suitable active ingredient are used, the AAR damage process in road paving concrete can be sufficiently prevented. A1 - Weise, Frank T1 - Regression analysis of ASR expansions and silica dissolution in the presence of NaCl T2 - Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reaction in Concrete N2 - The durability of concrete structures due to alkali-silica-reaction (ASR) is usually been assessed by ASR concrete prism tests (CPT). Therefore, the expansion of concrete specimens indicates an alkalisensitivity. In Germany these tests are performed at 40°C or accelerated 60°C. Nevertheless, ASR prism tests are expensive, power and time-consuming. For these reasons, an alternative chemical test (“mod. BTU-test”) was developed in the past. The “mod. BTU-test” was correlated with German standard CPT. In this test, the solubility of silica and alumina in the liquid phase is measured by ICP-OES. For special requirements in concrete road construction, stricter test procedures are necessary. The specimens are repeatedly subjected to cyclic alternating storage in NaCl. On the one hand, the presence of NaCl increases the ASR expansion, on the other hand NaCl also changes the dissolution behaviour of silica and alumina. For now is not possible to correlate the solubilities of “mod. BTU-test” and ASR expansions influenced by NaCl. Therefore, four aggregates with different ASR sensitivities were chosen and ASR concrete prism tests (in addition with NaCl) have been performed. According to the “mod. BTU-test” the solubilities of silica and alumina in presence of different NaCl concentrations were measured. This paper is about the regression analysis of silica and alumina dissolution and ASR expansion tests in presence of NaCl. The regression analysis shows the influence of a quasi-continuous and an interrupted cyclic alternating storage. Additionally the effects of temperature and NaCl concentration are investigated. In the end, a suitable NaCl concentration of the “mod. BTU-test” for dissolution experiments is recommended. The “mod. BTU-Test” with NaCl might be a serious and reliable test method for ASR classification for concrete road construction. For these tests, the specimens are stored in an ASR-provoking environment, where the reaction is accelerated by elevated temperature and humidity. To measure the length change, the storage must be interrupted for at least a few minutes. Düring the 60 °C Concrete Prism Test (60 °C-CPT), the specimens are cooled down to 20 °C for 24 hours, to ensure the same hygrothermal conditions for every measurement. This limits the number of measurements during the test period and may lead to additional effects, that probably influence the expansion development. With a recently developed device, it is possible to continuously monitor the expansion ofprisms without interrupting the ASR-provoking storage. Due to the dense database of this automated test, the results can contribute to a better understanding of the ASR-process. This study compares results of the automated and conventional 60 °C-CPT. Tests of different aggregates showed, that the results of the automated and conventional test are consistent, but the expansions during the conventional test are generally higher. Preliminary results led to the conclusion, that the cooling for the measurements leads to additional expansions. Therefore, a modified threshold should be discussed for the automated 60 °C-CPT. N2 - In order to avoid the increasing ASR damage to concrete pavements in the German motorway network in the future, binding suitability tests for the exclusion of alkali-sensitive aggregates in new construction and maintenanee measures were introduced with ARS 04/2013. This led to a significant reduetion in the number of suitable aggregates. Against this background, borderline alkali-sensitive aggregates are to be made usable by adding an internal water repellent during concrete easting. The ASR avoidance strategy is based on the signifi-cant reduetion of the penetration of water and de-icing salt solution into the concrete pavement. In a research project carried out at BAM on behalf of the BASt, the performance of various hydrophobing agents for this application was thoroughly investigated. In this contribution, the performance of a suitable water repellent in an exposed aggregate concrete with a very alkali-sensitive greywacke is shown as an example. The spectrum of laboratory investigations ranges from ASR concrete tests with alkali supply and the microscopic investigations carried out to evaluate the ASR damage potential, to the analysis of the moisture and de-icing salt penetration, to the determination of the mechanical properties and the freeze-thaw resistance. Finally, the still existing need for research for the transfer of this new ASR prevention strategy into practice is shown. These intrinsic microporous polymers are characterized by large BET surface area values of several hundred m2/g and pore sizes between 0.5 and 2 nm. Detailed comparison is made to the archetype of polymers of intrinsic microporosity, PIM-1, and polynorbornenes also bearing a microporosity. Due to the wavelength of neutrons, the diffusion and vibrations can be addressed on microscopic length and time scales. From the inelastic neutron scattering experiments the low frequency density of states (VDOS) is estimated which shows excess contributions to the Debye-type VDOS known as Boson peak. It was found that the maximum frequency of the Boson peak decreases with increasing microporosity characterized by the BET surface area. However, besides the BET surface area, additional factors such as the backbone stiffness govern the maximum frequency of the Boson peak. Further the mean squared displacement related to microscopic motions was estimated from elastic fixed window scans. At temperatures above 175 K, the mean squared displacement PIM-EA-TB(CH3) is higher than that for the demethylated counterpart PIM-EA-TB(H2). The additional contribution found for PIM-EATB(CH3) is ascribed to the rotation of the methyl group in this polymer because the only difference between the two structures is that PIM-EA-TB(CH3) has methyl groups where PIM-EA-TB(H2) has none. A detailed comparison of the molecular dynamics is also made to that of PIM-1 and the microporous polynorbornene PTCNSi1. The manuscript focuses on the importance of vibrations and the localized molecular mobility characterized by the microscopic diffusion on the gas Transport in polymeric separation membranes. In the frame of the random gate model localized fluctuations can open or close bottlenecks between pores to enable the diffusion of gas molecules. T1 - Mechanical Characterization of Adobe Bricks T2 - Building Pathology and Rehabilitation, Structural Characterization and Seismic Retrofitting of Adobe Constructions, Experimental and Numerical Developments N2 - The mechanical characterization of adobe bricks is an important first step in the study of the behaviour of adobe masonry. For this reason, in the last decades, different authors have conducted research on the mechanical behaviour of adobes from various regions of the world. Despite the importance of mechanical characterization, there are still only a few standards and normative documents with clear indications for the mechanical testing of earthen materials and, in general, These indications are not thorough and vary among different countries. Consequently, authors tend to adopt different types of test specimens and procedures in their experimental work, thus obtaining results that are not directly comparable. The fact that the materials and procedures traditionally used are also not standardized, varying greatly from region to region, also contributes to the difficulty of comparing results from different studies. This chapter presents a review of the indications provided by codes, standards and other technical recommendations for the mechanical testing of adobe bricks, as well as a detailed review of procedures adopted, and results obtained by different authors regarding the mechanical characterization of traditional adobe bricks. This chapter focuses, in particular, on the behaviour of adobe bricks when subjected to simple compression. It provides an overview of the existing knowledge and identifies needs for future research and development. T1 - Mechanical Characterization of Adobe Masonry T2 - Building Pathology and Rehabilitation, Structural Characterization and Seismic Retrofitting of Adobe Constructions, Experimental and Numerical Developments N2 - The characterization of the mechanical properties and behaviour of adobe masonry is fundamental for the understanding of the structural behaviour of adobe constructions. Thus, in the last decades, experimental studies focused on this topic have been carried out by different authors. Many of the existing experimental works, however, were carried out aiming to support broader studies focused on the seismic behaviour of adobe constructions and are not very detailed. Moreover, authors tend to adopt different procedures in their experimental work, since there are few indications in existing standards for testing adobe masonry. The wide variety in materials used, both for the adobes and mortars, further complicates this work, making it difficult to compare results obtained in different studies. This chapter provides an overview of the indications given by standards and other technical recommendations for the mechanical testing of adobe masonry. It presents a review of existing research on the mechanical behaviour of adobe masonry, addressing studies that focus on: (i) compression behaviour, (ii) shear behaviour, (iii) joint shear behaviour. It provides a global analysis of the existing knowledge, suggesting improvements for normative documents and identifying future Research needs. The “late primary ettringite formation” promotes an increase in volume within the hardened concrete leading to cracks. To analyze the effect of substituting part of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) by a treated brown coal fly ash mortar bars were tested according to ASTM C452. This test method was originally developed to extrapolate from the internal to external sulfate attack and is based on the idea that by testing a concrete mixture containing sulfate the process of deterioration is accelerated because it does not have to diffuse into the concrete before reaction first. In addition to the samples prescribed in ASTM C452 further samples in the size of the German SVA procedure were tested also designed for accessing the external sulfate resistance. The results show that while the replacement of 25 % of cement by brown coal fly ash leads to length changes around the limit defined by ASTM, the substitution of 50 % cement exceeded the limit by a multiple. The progress of expansion is the very similar for the two geometries tested. In-situ XRD measurements confirmed that while for pastes made of OPC the formation of ettringite is completed after 20 hours, this is not true for the mixtures containing the brown coal fly ash. In a different study the effect of hydrothermal treatment on the phase composition of ultra-high-performance concrete was analyzed. (Un-)exposed AAM were tested regarding their physicochemical and microstructural properties, bioreceptivity and overall durability. Metal addition led to a retarding effect during alkali-activation reaction, as well as to an increase in open porosity of up to 3.0% and corresponding lower compressive strength of up to 10.9%. Reduced microbial colonization and diversity were observed on AAM with Cu, while Zn addition led to increased biodiversity. We propose that the observed higher durability of Cu-doped AAM is due to antibacterial effects and associated reduction of biogenic acid production, superseding overall negative effects of metal-dosage on physical material properties. Observed lower durability of Zn-doped AAM was related to combined negative physicochemical and microbial effects. The investigated poly(tricyclononenes) PTCNSi1 and PTCNSi2g both bear a high microporosity which makes them promising candidates for active separation layers for gas separation membranes. At least for larger gas molecules it is assumed that the pathways for diffusion require an enlargement of pre-existing micropores in terms of an activated zone. A low temperature relaxation process was found for both polymers by the performed neutron scattering experiments. This process was assigned to the methyl group rotation. It was analysed in terms of a jump diffusion in a three-fold potential. The analysis of the dependence of the elastic incoherent structure factor on the scattering vector yields the number of methyl groups which might be immobilized. For PTCNSi1 (3 methyl groups in the monomeric unit) it was found that all methyl groups take part in the methyl group rotation whereas for PTCNSi2g (6 methyl groups in monomeric unit) a considerable number of methyl groups are blocked in their rotation. This immobilization of methyl groups is due to the sterically demanding arrangement of the methyl groups in PTCNSi2g. Dabei können u. a. A1 - Böhning, Martin T1 - A phenomenological criterion for an optical assessment of PE-HD fracture surfaces obtained from FNCT JF - Polymer Testing N2 - The full-notch creep test (FNCT) is a common test method to evaluate the environmental stress cracking (ESC) behavior of high-density polyethylene (PE-HD), e.g. for container materials. The test procedure as specified in ISO 16770 provides a comparative measure of the resistance against ESC using the time to failure of PE-HD specimens under constant mechanical load in a well-defined liquid test environment. Since the craze-crack damage mechanism underlying the ESC phenomenon is associated with brittle failure, the occurrence of a predominantly brittle fracture surface is a prerequisite to consider an FNCT measurement as representative for ESC, i.e. a time to failure dominated by craze-crack propagation. The craze-crack propagation continuously reduces the effective residual cross-sectional area of the specimen during the test, which results in a corresponding increase of the effective mechanical stress. Thus, a transition to ductile shear deformation is inevitable at later stages of the test, leading usually to a pronounced central ligament. Therefore, an optical evaluation of FNCT fracture surfaces concerning their brittleness is essential. An enhanced imaging analysis of FNCT fracture surfaces enables a detailed assessment of craze-crack Propagation during ESC. In this study, laser scanning microscopy (LSM) was employed to evaluate whether FNCT fracture surfaces are representative with respect to craze-crack propagation and ESC. Based on LSM height data, a phenomenological criterion is proposed to assess the validity of distinct FNCT measurements. This criterion is supposed to facilitate a quick evaluation of FNCT results in practical routine testing. Its applicability is verified on a sample basis for seven different commercial PE-HD container materials. In 2016, 10.4 Mt of BOFS were produced in the European Union (EU). The main part of BOFS is used in road construction, earthwork and hydraulic engineering. A smaller part is returned to the metallurgical circle, used as fertilizer or landfilled. However, it is also possible to produce higher value products from BOFS. For example, many researchers have investigated the possibility of producing Portland cement clinker and crude iron from BOFS by a carbothermal post-treatment. In this study, German BOFS was reduced in a small-scale electric arc furnace using petrol coke as reducing agent. The carbothermal treatment reduces the iron oxides in the BOFS to metallic iron, which accumulates at the bottom of the furnace by density separation. In addition to metallic iron, the process generates a mineral product rich in the tricalcium silicate solid solution alite. As the main constituent of Portland cement clinker, the hydraulic reactive mineral alite is of high economic importance. In previous studies, the hydraulic reactivity of the mineral product was investigated by testing the compressive strength of blends with 70 wt.% ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Recent investigations focused on the hydraulic properties of the pure mineral product from the reduced BOFS. The heat of hydration of the mineral product was measured by isothermal calorimetry and compared with the heat of hydration of a synthetic low-iron slag and OPC. In addition, the formation of hydration products was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) on freeze-dried samples after defined curing times. The results of the calorimetric measurements indicate that the mineral product produced less heat of hydration and its reaction was delayed compared to the synthetic low-iron slag and OPC. Hydration products such as portlandite and calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) formed later and in lower amounts. The production of a hydraulic material from BOFS by reductive treatment is of great interest to both the cement and steel industries. The substitution of cement clinker in OPC with a hydraulic material such as reduced BOFS leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from cement production. The steel industry benefits from an application for its by-products that avoids cost expensive landfilling and may even bring economic advantages. Furthermore, it may be possible to return the recovered crude iron to production. Besides its predominant use in road construction, earthwork, and hydraulic engineering, it is also possible to use BOFS as a source material for Portland cement clinker. The main difference in the chemical composition of BOFS from the chemical composition of Portland cement clinker is its high content of iron oxides (7-50 wt.%). In recent decades, many researchers have investigated the production of both Portland cement clinker and crude iron from BOFS via thermochemical reductive treatment. Carbothermal treatment of liquid BOFS causes reduction of iron oxides to metallic iron, which separates from the mineral phase due to its higher density. In this study, German BOFS was reduced in a small-scale electric arc furnace using petrol coke as reducing agent. The produced low-iron mineral product was chemically similar to Portland cement clinker and contained the most important Portland cement mineral alite (Ca3SiO5) as main component. Besides alite, the mineral product contained other Portland cement clinker constituents such as belite (β-Ca2SiO4) and tricalcium aluminate (Ca3Al2O6). The production of Portland cement clinker and crude iron from BOFS has economic and ecological benefits for both the cement and steel industry. Cement clinker from reduced BOFS may be used as a substitute for cement clinker from conventional cement production, thereby CO2 emissions will be reduced. The steel industry benefits from a high-value application for its by-products that avoids cost expensive landfilling and may even bring economic advantages. However, reductive treatment requires high temperatures and, for economic reasons, has to be carried out immediately after casting of the liquid BOFS, which is a logistical challenge for most steel plants. A cost-benefit analysis is therefore essential. Preferential orientation of the microstructure (polymer chains or crystallites) in a specific direction or plane often enhances the material properties, especially if the high-strength covalent bonds are primarily exposed to loads instead of the weaker van der Waals bonds. However, the orientation-dependent microstructure and its mechanical behavior is in general already well understood by many scientific studies [1-3]. Isotropic materials are frequently required for an intrinsic material characterization without prevailing processing-induced properties, as is the case for Full Notch Creep Test (FNCT) [4] addressing environmental stress cracking (ESC) in high-density polyethylene (PE-HD) [5, 6]. Since ESC is one of the major limiting issues for long-term performance of PE-HD pipes and containers [7], which in contrast have a production-related preferential orientated microstructure due to extrusion or extrusion blow molding, it is important to additionally investigate the ESC resistance of such anisotropic microstructure. Investigations of the slow crack growth (SCG) with respect to the molecular orientation generally obtain a factor of 1.2 up to 4.7 between crack growth perpendicular to the extrusion direction and crack growth parallel to the extrusion direction 8. Based on FNCT investigations with an aqueous detergent solution as environmental medium, hot pressed sheets with isotropic morphology are compared with extruded sheets from which specimens with different orientation angles are taken. However, the time to failure obtained by FNCT is also significantly influenced by the different cooling conditions under which the final morphology is formed. The tendency of the specimen to fail due to ESC is investigated as a function of environmental medium temperature. For a more detailed analysis of the affecting parameters in the manufacturing process, the ESC resistance is discussed considering the differences in crystallinity as revealed by thermal analysis. The resistance to environmental stress cracking (ESC) of the material is evaluated using the time to failure of the specimen in an aqueous solution of a detergent [2, 3]. Usually specimens made of sheets with isotropic material properties, manufactured by hot pressing, are employed in order to obtain intrinsic properties of the material in terms of ESC failure. In contrast, the processes used in manufacturing to form containers and pipes, such as extrusion blow molding or extrusion, impose anisotropic properties to the material. These are mostly due to a microstructural orientation (polymer chains or crystallites) [4]. Furthermore, the different cooling conditions significantly affect the size distribution of crystallites as well as the overall morphology. It is therefore essential to understand the influence of process-induced material characteristics on failure due to ESC. A large number of studies on material properties as a function of microstructural preferential orientation have already been conducted [5-7]. However, effects on ESC as the major failure mechanism of containers and pipes are still rather unexplored [8, 9]. The most important factor is whether primarily intramolecular high-strength covalent bonds or the substantially weaker intermolecular van der Waals forces are predominantly loaded. In addition to the widely established classification by time to failure, the strain or crack opening displacement (COD) provides valuable information about the evolution and progression of damage as a function of time [10, 11]. Optical strain measurement using digital image correlation allows the differences in COD for isotropic and different angles of orientation of anisotropic specimens to be discussed. Also, a post-fracture surface analysis provides clarification on the craze-crack mechanism of the ESC. These different ESC-related properties of extruded and hot-pressed specimens have been investigated at different environmental medium temperatures and different initial stresses to provide a broad characterization of the fracture behavior of PE-HD. In this study, we applied a carbothermal reduction of BOFS in a technical-scale electric arc furnace and characterised the clinker-like products. Those clinker-like non-metallic products (NMPs) had a chemical and mineralogical composition comparable to clinker for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and contained large elongated alite crystals as major component. The pure NMPs reacted more slowly and achieved a lower degree of hydration compared with commercial OPC. If the reactivity of the products can be further increased by employing specific adaptations, it can be used as a full clinker substitute for OPC. Nevertheless, it is also an option to use the material without further modifications as a cement component or concrete addition, which contributes to the strength development in both cases. Nevertheless, service conditions in geothermal facilities are in many cases extreme in terms of corrosion due to the chemical composition of hydrothermal fluids and temperatures. Therefore, materials selection based on preliminary material qualification is essential to guarantee a secure and reliable operation of the facilities. During operation of a geothermal research facility in Groß Schönebeck copper and lead effects have been found downhole. Occurring mechanisms and measures to prevent precipitation or scaling needed to be investigated as well as potential influences of such precipitates on corrosion resistance of metallic materials used for equipment. This contribution deals with the evaluation of the corrosion behavior of carbon steel and corrosion resistant alloys in copper and/or lead containing artificial geothermal water, simulating the conditions in the Northern German Basin. The behavior of these materials in an artificial geothermal water obtained by electrochemical measurements and exposure tests are presented. While carbon steel exhibits precipitation and deposition, higher alloyed material shows different response to such species and a higher resistance in saline geothermal water. Basing on these results the suitability of the investigated corrosion resistant alloy is given for use in such conditions, whereas carbon steel creates difficulties due to its susceptibility to Cu- and Pb-precipitation. Critical material specific properties were determined by static exposure and electrochemical tests in artificial geothermal water with high salinity and low pH, containing Cu/Pb. It could be shown that significant Cu- resp. Pb-deposition and precipitation only occurred in combination with carbon steel. Corrosion resistant alloys (e. g. Cr- and Ni-dominated stainless steels) prevent the disturbing Cu-agglomeration resp. Pb-deposition. Therefore, they are suitable to be chosen for future design of geothermal piping system, either in massive or in cladded form. Regarding corrosion, formation of crevices with non-metallic materials shall be avoided. So, in addition to its already known limited corrosion resistance, carbon steel shall not be used when copper or lead species are content of the geothermal brine. Otherwise precipitation and/or deposition of metallic copper resp. lead must be expected, increasing the susceptibility of clogging the piping system. From the interactions and pitting corrosion point of view, corrosion resistant alloys (preferably Ni-rich) seem to be most favorable when selecting materials for applications in such geothermal brines. Characterizing the corrosion protectiveness of these new coatings, however, should not be underestimated. While exposure tests are time intensive, cyclic tests can only be used for a very limited field of application. Thus, electrochemical measurements provide both an efficient and an effective alternative. Conventional aqueous bulk electrolytes influence the surface layers of a tested zinc coating and are therefore not reliable. Gel electrolytes, however, have evolved over the last few years, are minimally invasive and provide reliable results. This work describes experiments with gel electrolytes made of agar. Unlike previous work, it proposes a composition of gel electrolyte for minimally invasive description of the protective power of naturally formed oxide layers on zinc and zinc coatings. Therefore, as a first part, the gel electrolyte made of agar is verified as a method for zinc and zinc-coated samples. Afterwards, this paper introduces the corrosion product layer resistance RL as a promising parameter to evaluate the protective power of zinc coatings. Results are verified with EIS and FTIR measurements. An example on a representative zinc coating demonstrates the practical application. These model liquids are established in German regulations for the approval of dangerous goods containers and consist of typical admixtures used for crop protection products but without biological active ingredients. This study is performed with the standardized method of Full Notch Creep Test, adapting the media temperature to 40 °C according to the usual conditions where these test liquids are applied. The two model liquids differ into a water-based solution and a composition based on different organic solvents which are absorbed by the material up to significant levels. Therefore, extensive sorption measurements are performed. Many works of art are UV- and light-sensitive. It is well known that especially UV radiation causes damage and discoloration in paintings, textiles, plastics, wood and other materials. In particular, the wavelengths between 280 and 410 nm cause color changes, embrittlement or destruction of e.g. plastics over time. Therefore, strongly UV-absorbing glasses are advantageous for architecture and are necessary for the protection of cultural assets. As restorers in all disciplines become more and more aware, the demands placed on buildings and their furnishings in terms of climate are becoming increasingly detailed and precise. The aim in each case is to preserve the valuable artwork. For some years now, the industry has been offering the protection of cultural objects by installing special UV-protective glasses. Currently, UV protection for church buildings is realized by laminated safety glass equipped with appropriate UV-protective plastic films. Technically, this always means a second pane of glass in front of the windows, which is installed outside the building. This creates climatic gaps that are difficult to control and deterioration due to ageing effects can be expected. At the same time, this protective glazing is not invisible and has a considerable aesthetic influence on the interior and exterior appearance of the building. Meanwhile, the preservation of historical monuments accepts such aesthetic cuts on buildings in order to protect the artwork in the interior from UV light. To this day, however, the long-term durability of UV protection provided by inserted plastic films is still controversial. To date the only available alternative on the market is a mouth-blown UV protection glass which uses a so-called overlay to provide UV protection. This shows that UV protection can also be achieved by glasses without plastic films thus realizing an exclusive inorganic protection which normally is more stable than a polymeric one. So far there are not enough studies to prove long-term durability. The aim of this project is to provide existing glazing or new glazing to be created with a highly transparent layer that ensures this UV-protective filter function below 400 nm. The glass coating is to be applied to the glass over a large area and fired into the surface like a classic ceramic enamel paint with the same technics. In addition, it should be long-term durable in its function. It means, that the glass has to be fused at temperatures below 630 °C during the firing process, its chemical durability has to be high, its coefficient of thermal expansion has to be as close as the one of the substrate (usually float glass) and the glass has to absorb the UV-radiation within a thin thickness (thinner as 100 µm). In this project, the long-term durability of commercial UV-protective glasses is examined. New low melting glasses containing UV-absorbing ions are being developed. Their UV-absorption as a thin layer is analyzed as well as their chemical durability and their thermal properties. Recently Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIMs) have been in a great interest because of their outstanding BET surface area larger than 700m2/g and pore size smaller than 1 nm. PIMs are a promising candidate in gas separation with high permeability and appealing selectivity due to their inefficient packing derived from a combination of ladder-like rigid segments with sites of contortion. However, it is recognized this class of polymers suffer from decrease in performance with time due to physical aging. The initial microporous structures approach a denser state via local chain rearrangements, leading to a dramatic reduction in permeability. As chain packing during film casting and physical aging are the key factors determine the performance in separation applications, characterization of the molecular mobility in these materials has been proved to provide valuable information. In recent research on PIM-1 the archetypal PIM, a molecular relaxation process with high activation energy together with a significant conductivity in the glassy state has been found and explained with the formation of local intermolecular agglomerates due to interaction of π-electrons in aromatic moieties of the polymer backbone. In this work, the dielectric behavior of the polymeric films and their response upon heating (aging) were measured by isothermal frequency scans during different heating/cooling cycles in a broad temperature range down to 133K for the first time. Multiple dielectric processes following Arrhenius behavior were observed. Local fluctuations, Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars (MWS) polarization and structural relaxations were discussed correlating to structural-properties of PIM-1. Up to now, no other work has studied the role of porosity and thermal history of PIM-1 film in dielectric processes. The goal is by eliminating thermal history and considering storing conditions provide better understanding on aging and plasticizing in high free volume glassy polymer PIM-1. A recently introduced AM process is laser-induced slip casting of lithium aluminate/microsilica slurries, which yields parts with excellent mechanical strengths. To clarify the underlying mechanisms, μ-Raman spectroscopy was applied to parts produced by the process, and the dissolution and hydration of lithium aluminate was studied inter alia using conventional and in-situ X-ray diffraction. The results show that significant dissolution of lithium aluminate occurs, particularly at increased temperatures during laser interaction, which leads to an increase of pH and precipitation of an akopovaite-like Li-Al-CO3 layered double hydroxide. The increase of the pH is likely to induce dissolution of the microsilica and possibly formation of a hydrous lithium aluminosilicate gel. These observations explain the strength evolution of the studied parts and can also aid the development and improvement of related AM methods. While for the thermal treatment the increase in strength is attributed to an intensified pozzolanic and hydraulic reaction, for the hydrothermal treatment previous studies accredited it mostly to the formation of tobermorite. In the presented study thermal and hydrothermal treatment of UHPC samples was systematically varied and the phase formation analysed related to the strength development of a reference sample cured for 28 days in water. For the thermal treatment the results show that the strength increase depends on the protection against desiccation and can be ascribed to an improved pozzolanic reaction of the siliceous fillers. To achieve a significant enhancement of strength, a pre-storage time of few days and a long dwell time at elevated temperature/pressure are required. For the hydrothermal treatment already heating the specimens up to 185 °C in saturated steam followed by an immediate cooling leads to a substantial increase in compressive strength. Pre-storage time did not affect the result as far as a minimum of several hours is guaranteed. The improved performance is due to an increase in the pozzolanic and hydraulic reaction. Surprisingly, tobermorite was only found within a very thin layer at the surface of the sample, but not in the bulk. Sulphate and aluminium stemming from the decomposition of the ettringite are bound in the newly formed phases hydroxylellestadite and hydrogarnet. Considering high temperatures and aggressive mediums exist in geothermal systems, Al2O3 can be a potential coating candidate to protect steels in geothermal applications. In this study, γ-Al2O3 was used as a coating on martensitic steels by applying AlOOH sol followed by a heat treatment at 600 °C. To evaluate the coating application process, one-, two-, and three-layer coatings were tested in the artificial North German Basin (NGB), containing 166 g/L Cl−, at 150 °C and 1 MPa for 168 h. To reveal the stability of the Al2O3 coating in NGB solution, three-layer coatings were used in exposure tests for 24, 168, 672, and 1296 h, followed by surface and cross-section characterization. SEM images show that the Al2O3 coating was stable up to 1296 h of exposure, where the outer layer mostly transformed into boehmite AlOOH with needle-like crystals dominating the surface. Closer analysis of cross-sections showed that the interface between each layer was affected in long-term exposure tests, which caused local delamination after 168 h of exposure. In separate experiments, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed at 150 °C to evaluate the changes of coatings within the first 24 h. Results showed that the most significant decrease in the impedance is within 6 h, which can be associated with the electrolyte penetration through the coating, followed by the formation of AlOOH. Here, results of both short-term EIS measurements (up to 24 h) and long-term exposure tests (up to 1296 h) are discussed. T1 - Provenancing of cement using elemental analyses and isotope techniques – The state-of-the-art and future perspectives JF - Journal of analytical atomic spectrometry N2 - With the aim of identifying the origin and the manufacturer of a cement, a reliable procedure that provides unambiguous results is needed. Such procedure could resolve practical issues in damage research, liability issues and forensic investigations. A substantial number of attempts for fingerprinting of building materials, including cement, has already been carried out during the last decades. Most of them were based on concentration analysis of the main elements/components. This review provides an overview of provenance studies of cement and the main approaches commonly used. Provenance studies of cement via isotope techniques are also presented and discussed as representatives of the state-of-the-art in the field. Due to the characteristic properties and the occurrence of carefully selected isotope ratios, unique fingerprints of different kinds of materials can be provided by these methods. This property has largely been explored in various scientific fields such as geo- and cosmochemistry, food forensics, archaeology, geochronology, biomedical studies, and climate change processes. However, the potential of isotope techniques in cement and concrete research for provenance studies has barely been investigated. Therefore, the review outlines a suitable approach using isotope ratios, which could lead to reliable provenancing of cementitious materials in the future. Within CLUSTER, we investigated potential impacts of CO2 streams with different and temporally variable compositions and mass flow rates along the whole CCS chain. Investigations included, amongst others, impacts on: Corrosion of pipeline steel, pipeline network design and related transport costs, alteration of well bore cements, pressure evelopment and rock integrity, geochemical reactions, and petrophysical and geomechanical rock properties. All investigations are based on a generic CCS chain scenario. In this scenario, CO2 streams are captured from a spatial cluster of eleven emitters and collected in a regional pipeline network. Emitters comprise seven fossil fuel-fired power plants equipped with different capture technologies, two cement plants, one refinery and one integrated iron and steel plant. In total, 19.78 Mio t CO2 (including impurities) are captured in the emitter cluster annually. The combined CO2 stream is transported in a trunk line with a length of 400 km (100 km of these offshore) and is injected into five generic storage structures. The storage reservoirs are saline aquifers of the Buntsandstein. The investigations revealed beneficial and deteriorating impacts of different impurities and combinations thereof. Overall, no fundamental technical obstacles for transporting, injecting and storing CO2 streams of the modelled variable compositions and mass flow rates were observed. Based on the results, the CLUSTER project team recommends not to define “minimum composition thresholds” for CO2 streams as strict threshold values for eachindividual impurity in the stream. Instead, CO2 stream compositions and variabilities for specific CCS projects should be constrained with regard to a set of parameters including i) the overall CO2 content, ii) maximum contents of relevant impurities or elements, iii) acceptable variability of CO2 stream composition, and iv)impurity combinations to be avoided. Since the 1980s, the reclaimed asphalt has been recycled achieving a reuse rate of around 90% and thus a very high value in the last years. In the future, instead of the amount, the quality of the reclaimed asphalt will be more important because the recycled asphalt will be reused again and again. Thus, these asphalt mixes are in the second or even third cycle of reuse. Concerning this situation, the question arises if asphalt can be reused several times without any loss in quality. An important factor affecting the asphalt quality is the binder bitumen. During the production, construction and service life, the ageing of this binder occurs causing a hardening of the bitumen. To compensate this hardening, additives for the reclaimed asphalt in terms of rejuvenation agents (rejuvenators) gain in importance. With these rejuvenators, the physical properties of bitumen can be modified e.g. the hardness and the stiffness reduced. However, the mechanism of the rejuvenation agents and the effects of the bitumen chemistry are largely unknown because the composition of the products varies very strongly. But with growing knowledge about these mechanisms and effects of the rejuvenation agents, the chemical composition and thus the physical and ageing behavior of bitumen can be targeted modified by the use of suitable rejuvenators. In this work, the actual results of the project Postcarbone road should be presented including investigations about the chemical and physical mechanisms as well as the efficiency of different rejuvenators. Further, a model for the cyclic reuse of bitumen should be developed. Based on this model, the choice of a suitable rejuvenation agent for the considered bitumen or rather asphalt should be possible. JF - Construction and building materials N2 - Compared with most common construction materials, fiber reinforced cementitious materials are well known to exhibit better physical, working and mechanical properties. In this study, three fibers were selected: polypropylene fiber (PPF) and polyvinyl alcohol fiber (PVAF), which represented synthetic fibers, and sisal fiber (SF), which represented natural fibers. Effects of these fibers on the flowability, rheological properties, and adsorption behavior of the cement paste with polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) were investigated. Furthermore, the above experimental results were verified by measuring the contact angle of the fiber with water and PCE solution and the apparent morphology of the fiber. Results revealed that the addition of fibers significantly reduces the fluidity of the cement paste, while the yield stress and plastic viscosity of the cement paste increase with the addition of fibers. From the contact angle and scanning electron microscope, the surface of SF was relatively rough, and the contact angle of SF with water or PCE solution was the smallest. It can be concluded that the plant fiber has a significant influence on the fluidity and rheology of cement paste. Therefore, they pose a major challenge to geothermal power-plants, which are mostly built of low alloyed steels, e.g., carbon steel. Carbon steel is susceptible to uniform and localized corrosion when exposed to geothermal brines having acidic-saline properties. To overcome this limitation, geothermal power plants should be built by either high alloyed materials or by integrating protection systems on carbon steel, such as coatings and inhibitors. We studied a coating system containing polyaniline/silicon dioxide basing on locally available resources that provides protection against corrosion of carbon steel and enhance the thermal resistance in geothermal environments. Here, exposure and electrochemical tests of coated carbon steels were performed in an artificial geothermal brine. The solution had a pH of 4, with the composition of 1,500 mg/L of chlorides, which is based on the chemical analysis of geothermal brine found in Sibayak, Indonesia. All exposure tests were conducted using autoclaves at 150 °C with a total pressure of 1 MPa, which was performed for up to six months to evaluate the durability of the coating system. Post-experimental analyses were performed by assessing the surface of specimens using optical and electron microscopes. On the other hand, electrochemical tests were performed for seven days at 25 °C and 150 °C to investigate the kinetics of electrochemical reactions by measuring open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectra. Electrochemical tests indicated that there was no significant change in the Ecorr between the coated and uncoated carbon steel at room temperature. At 150 °C, the coated carbon steel has a lower potential than that of carbon steel, indicating that the coating is protecting carbon steel cathodically or slowing down the corrosion reaction. Finally, a long-term exposure test confirmed that the PANI/SiO2 modified coating successfully protects the carbon steel in the Sibayak artificial geothermal water up to 150 °C for 6 months. The resulting poly-(DOPO-HQ/THPPO-terephthalate) (PDTT) is implemented as a flame retardant into an epoxy resin (EP) at a 10 wt% loading. The effects on EP are compared with those of the monomer DOPO-HQ and triphenylphosphine oxide (OPPh3) as low molar mass flame retardants. The glass transition temperature, thermal decomposition, flammability (reaction to small flame), and burning behavior of the thermosets are investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, pyrolysis combustion flow calorimetry, UL 94-burning chamber testing, and cone calorimeter measurements. Although P-contents are low at only 0.6 wt%, the study aims not at attaining V-0, but at presenting a proof of principle: Epoxy resinswith PDTT show promising fire performance, exhibiting a 25% reduction in total heat evolved (THE), a 30% reduction in peak heat release rate (PHRR) due to flame inhibition (21% reduction in effective heat of combustion (EHC)), and an increase in Tg at the same time. This study indicates that rigid aromatic hyperbranched polymeric structures offer a promising route toward multifunctional flame retardancy. High loadings of aluminum trihydroxide (ATH) and carbon black (CB) are the most used FRs and reinforcing additive, respectively, in rubbers. To reduce loading without losing mechanical properties, partial substitution of ATH as well as CB by low amounts of multilayer graphene (MLG) nanoparticles is investigated. The high aspect ratio MLG is made of ten graphene sheets. In polybutadiene/chloroprene (BR/CR) nanocomposites 3 phr MLG replaced 15 phr CB and/or 3 phr ATH. Material and mechanical properties as well as fire behavior of the nanocomposites are compared to BR/CR with 20 phr CB both with and without 50 phr ATH. MLG appears as a promising nanofiller to improve the functional properties: replacement of CB improved rheological, curing, and mechanical properties; substitution of ATH improved nanocomposite properties without affecting flame retardancy. T1 - Toward sustainability in the built environment: An integrative approach JF - Resources, Conservation & Recycling N2 - The built environment significantly impacts the health of individuals and populations in various ways. The health and durability of the built environment are intertwined with availability ofnaturally occurring and man-made resources and their supply chains. Therefore, resource con servation is a key to ensure sustainability of built environments. Many industrial wastes can be turned into valuable resources for reuse in construction of the built environment. For instance, biowaste (woody/ leafy biomass and animal waste) have been used to make construction adhesives (Fini et al., 2011), some urban wastes have been used in road construction (Poulikakos et al., 2017; Schmidt et al., 2021), end of life plastics and polymers have made their way to roadway construction, bio-oils and algae harvested from wastewater treatment plants has been used to make antiaging for outdoor building elements to mitigate UV aging (Kabir et al., 2021); sulfur has been used as an extender in asphalt and recycled mineral powders such as silica and alumina have been used to increase strength and durability against acidic compounds (Fini et al., 2019). These are just a few examples of recycling venues with beneficial uses in the built environment. The construction and operation of the built environment and the traffic that it attracts or facilitates significantly contribute to the emis sion of greenhouse gasses (GHG) and cause air pollution. The direct and indirect impacts of GHG and air pollutants on the environment and so cieties have been weil established. The built environment can be used as a powerful platform not only for recycling and resource conservation but also to remove near-ground gaseous contaminants. This can be done via tailored design and engineering of adsorptive construction materials via recycling of waste materials. For instance, advanced sorbent systems can be made for removing C02, H2S, and formaldehyde from air. This re quires tailored sorbent design, topology optimization, and catalytic conversion of collected gaseous compounds to name a few. This special issue covers innovative materials, methods, and man agement practices which aim to simultaneously address durability ofthe built environment, air quality, resource conservation, and supply chain resilience. Such innovative materials, methods, and management prac tices will transform the built environment into not only an active contributor to no waste, no pollution for healthy environment, but also a medium that converts the waste and pollution into beneficial products for use in the built environment, thereby promoting resource conser vation. Followings are examples of topics that the special issue is interested in: • Venuses to advance resource conservation specifically via novel ap proaches in the built environment. • Innovative construction materials for passive or active adsorption of harmful gaseous emissions to conserve air, energy, and water. • Advanced materials, methods, and management practices to pro mote well-being of the built environment. • Smart buildings to promote resource conservation. • Research convergence in the built environment for zero waste, zero pollution economy. N2 - The requirement that the flame retardancy of plastics is still effective to the required degree not only at the time of manufacture of the respective products, but also over the entire period of use, is a major challenge in view of the very long periods of time involved. In addition, the requirement is new for many products in practice, as up to now the influence of flame retardants on the stability of the polymer materials has been investigated, but not the stability of the flame retardant itself. The long-term behaviour of halogen-free systems has been little studied to date, especially because phosphorus- and nitrogen-based systems seem to have a much smaller influence on the oxidative stability of polymers than halogene containing flame retardants. The question of how reliable flame retardancy is when plastic products have been in use for several years indoors and outdoors and have been exposed to a wide range of climatic stresses has only been investigated in isolated cases. Possible effects of weathering on flame-retarded polymer materials are that the flame retardants themselves degrade, migrate or are washed out, or that their effect diminishes through interaction with other additives used or with the ageing products of the polymer matrix. At this point, there was a great need for research in order to reach the point where the stability of the flame retardant properties of a product can be reliably guaranteed over its entire service life. This question is taken up by the research project carried out. The aim of the research project was the systematic investigation of the long-term stability of the flame-retardant effect of halogen-free flame-retardant polymer materials under various weather conditions. For this purpose, the predominant damage mechanisms of the polymers and the flame retardants as well as the interactions occurring were analysed in order to develop an understanding of the processes taking place and to work out recommendations for reducing ageing. Subject of the investigations were different applicationrelevant flame retardant concepts, which were compared with each other. The development of structure-property relationships enabled the description of the specific sensitivities and the comparison between the different systems. Based on this, specific guidelines for the optimisation of the long-term stability of the flame retardants were developed for the different flame retardants. Besides the type and properties of nanoparticles, their dispersing in the elastomeric matrix and the stability of this dispersion through all processing steps are the main factors for the resulting performance of the produced material. Therefore, a preparation chain via latex premixing to a highly filled masterbatch, followed by conventional technical processing is to be developed.
