Comparative investigations with synchrotron technique on CFRP and grey-scale analysis on glass fibre-reinforced-plastics (GFRP) confirm these results. Moreover it was found that the fracture mechanical properties of the matrix system influence damage nucleation and propagation in the laminate during static and fatigue loads. Single-step fatigue tests were carried out on Laminates with RIM135 and LY556 matrix systems made from non-crimped fabric (NCF) or twill weave in different fibre orientations. The damage to the LY556 laminates was characterized by laminate cracks growing rapidly over the whole specimen width, whereas the damage on the RIM135 laminates was characterized by an earlier onset of micro-cracking followed by laminate cracks. The specimens were fatigued up to 108 (very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime) load cycles. S-N-curves of damage initiation were drawn and boundaries were identified for endurance within the VHCF regime. A phenomenology based model focusing on matrix stress was applied to reproduce the first inter-fibre failure (IFF) under static and fatigue loads. During the build-up process, high cooling rates occur. Thus, L-PBF AlSi10Mg alloys exhibit a Si-nanostructure in the as-built condition, which leads to superior mechanical properties compared to conventional cast materials. At the same time, such high thermal gradients generally involve a deleterious residual stress (RS) state that needs to be assessed during the design process, before placing a component in service. To this purpose post-process heat treatments are commonly performed to relieve detrimental RS. In this contribution two low-temperature stress-relief heat treatments (SRHT) are studied and compared with the as-built state: a SRHT at 265°C for 1 hour and a SRHT at 300°C for 2 hours. At these temperatures microstructural changes occur. In the as-built state, Si atoms are supersaturated in the α-aluminium matrix, which is enveloped by a eutectic Si-network. At 265°C the Si precipitation from the matrix to the pre-existing network is triggered. Thereafter, above 295°C the fragmentation and spheroidization of the Si branches takes place, presumably by Al–Si interdiffusion. After 2 hours the original eutectic network is completely replaced by uniformly distributed blocky particles. The effect of the heat and the microstructure modification on the RS state and the fatigue properties is investigated. Energy dispersive x-ray and neutron diffraction are combined to investigate the near-surface and bulk RS state of a L-PBF AlSi10Mg material. Differences in the endurance limit are evaluated experimentally by high cycle fatigue (HCF) tests and cyclic R-curve determination. The aim is to assess their impact on the fatigue behavior. Therefore, a combination of methods, including image processing of micro‐computed tomography (CT) scans, fatigue testing, and machine learning, was applied. A workflow was established to contribute to the nondestructive assessment of component quality and mechanical properties. Additionally, this study illustrates the application of machine learning to address a classification problem, specifically the categorization of pores into gas pores and lack of fusion pores. Although it was shown that internal defects exhibited a reduced impact on fatigue behavior compared with surface defects, it was noted that surface defects exert a higher influence on fatigue behavior. A machine learning algorithm was developed to predict the fatigue life using surface defect features as input parameters. The primary challenge for the simulation of structural fatigue failure is caused by the enormous computational costs due to cycle-by-cycle temporal integration throughout the whole loading history, which is in the order of 103–107 cycles. As a consequence, most approaches circumvent this problem and use empirical methods such as Wöhler curves. They are well suited for approximating the lifetime, but they are not capable to capture a realistic degradation of the material including redistribution of stresses. The main objective of the paper is to provide a technique for finite element (FE) simulations of structures under fatigue loading while reducing computational costs. A Fourier transformation-based temporal integration (FTTI) scheme is proposed, which adapts the conventional FE method for modeling the viscoplastic deterioration in a structure subjected to cyclic loading. The response fields are represented by a Fourier series which assumes a temporal scale separation: a microchronological (short time) scale arises from the oscillatory loading and a macrochronological (long time) scale is due to the slow material relaxation resulting from yielding and damage evolution. The original dynamic boundary value problem (BVP) is approximated by the stationary BVP on the microchronological scale. Alternation of the displacement field on the macrochronological scale is correlated with evolution of the history variables by means of a high order adaptive cycle jump method. Performance and significant acceleration of the FE simulations is demonstrated at different loading scenarios for a constitutive damage model where the progressive damage accumulation is driven by viscoplastic yielding. N2 - The main objective of this thesis is the fatigue behavior of concrete under high-cycle compressive loadings. Current knowledge about fatigue behavior of concrete is still incomplete. This concerns especially the process of fatigue which is preceding the fatigue failure. The leak of knowledge about fatigue behavior is opposed to the steady growing importance of this topic within the practice in civil engineering. Therefore, within this thesis a systematic and comprehensive investigation of the process of fatigue itself was done. This contributes to the better understanding of the progression of damage and the corresponding processes within the material. The experimental investigation consisted mainly of experiments with constant amplitude loadings in compression with cylindrical specimen made of normal strength concrete. Two differed load levels were used which resulted in numbers of cycles to failure of 10⁶ and 10⁷ as well as 10³ and 10⁴. The experiments were done in combination with different types of nondestructive and destructive testing methods like strain measuring, deformation of surface, ultrasonic signals, acoustic emissions, optical microscopy and also scattering electron microscopy. To access some parameters of influence in relation to the fatigue behavior additional creep tests and also several tests with different scales of specimen were done. The fatigue process of concrete is determined as an evolution of damage that starts from the beginning of the loading process. This evolution has manifold and different influences on the different material properties of concrete. In this relation a major finding was that fatigue related damage leads to a transformation of the complete stress-strain-relationship. This relationship is also subjected to an evolution process. Due to the authors observations it could not be determined that the investigated changes in macroscopic material behavior are caused by a development of micro cracks within the material structure. The results of the investigation indicated that rather the fatigue related changes in material behavior are mainly a result of viscous processes in cement stone especially in phase I and II of the fatigue process. Furthermore, it was observed that creep in concrete leads to similar but lesser changes in material behavior of concrete. Beside this, tests with different scales of specimens have shown an appreciable effect of size on the resulting material behavior under static and cyclic loadings respectively. From these experimental findings a detailed description was derived about the processes which take place within the material structure during the fatigue loading and also leads to the observed macroscopic changes in material behavior. In this context, the tests have shown that relating to stiffness reduction a scalar value could not capture the damage effect on the stress-strain-relationship caused by fatigue. A following consideration gives an overview about applicability of the different measured parameters for the detection of the degree of fatigue damage with regard to a reliable damage indicator. Finally an approach is presented which is able to describe the investigated developments of significant values within the observed fatigue process. The number of input data depends essentially on the complexity of the models employed and on the level of accuracy of the analysis. It is common practice to use safety factors in design to account for the scatter of the input parameters. Nevertheless, overly-conservative factors lead often to unrealistic estimations of fatigue life. This work presents a fracture mechanics-based model for the structural integrity assessment of welded joints under constant amplitude fatigue loading, in which the local geometry at the weld toe and the fatigue crack growth properties are considered statistically distributed. N2 - Wind turbines often exhibit cracks in the blade shells after only a few years in service, significantly before their expected 20 to 30 year design lifespan. This leads to complicated repairs on difficult to reach rotor blades, and can cause a cost-intensive standstill of the turbine. A possible source of these defects in the rotor blade shells are the imperfections which occur during production. In order to investigate the effect of these imperfections on the fatigue behavior of rotor blades, a test rig was developed at the BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung) upon which intermediate scale static and cyclic-fatigue testing could be performed. The complementary sandwich shell specimens developed and investigated with the test rig are representative of the outer shell of wind turbine rotor blades in terms of materials and manufacturing processes, as well as structural mechanics. The specimens were built with reproducible imperfections, including laminate overlaps in the face sheets and gaps of varying size in the foam core. The damage condition was monitored during cyclic-fatigue testing under realistic load cases using a combination of in-situ passive thermography and strain field measurement. The cyclic testing and parallel non-destructive structural health monitoring of the shell specimens showed the imperfections to significantly influence the damage initiation and decrease the component service life. The results can be used accordingly as recommendations for operationally more reliable design of sandwich structures. N2 - Due to their superior lightweight properties, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials are well established in various fields, such as sports equipment, aerospace or wind energy structures. These structures are not only subjected to mechanical loads, but also to a broad spectrum of thermal environments. However, the impact of temperature on the fatigue life of thermomechanically loaded FRP structures is barely investigated to-date. In the scope of this work, the influence of temperatures in a range of 213 K to 343 K on a glass fiber reinforced epoxy polymer is experimentally examined. An extensive thermo-mechanical characterization of the static properties of the material is performed. The neat resin and Fiber material are investigated, as well as the composite. In addition, the impact of thermal loads on the damage evolution under quasi-static as well as cyclic fatigue loading is investigated for different multi-angle laminates. Based on the experimental data, a correlation is shown between damage and matrix effort of the unidirectional layer. The matrix effort is calculated according to a micromechanical model considering thermal residual stresses. Particularly under transverse loading, the damage Evolution can be predicted as a function of the dilatational strain energy of the matrix. Using the concept of the matrix effort presented in this work, a prediction of the fatigue life of the investigated material at different ambient temperature conditions can be performed.
