Das BAM-Teilvorhaben beinhaltet das Screening von Benchmark-Materialsystemen und die Validierung von Messstrategien. Im Ergebnis erfolgte eine Fokussierung auf das im Vergleich zur off Null Ellipsometrie (ONE) aussichtereichere Verfahren der referenzkompensierten Ellipsometrie(RKE), das marktstrategisch in RSE (referenced spectral ellipsometry) umbenannt wurde. Alle Materialsysteme der BAM-Unterauftragnehmer konnten mit IE visualisiert werden, mit dem RSE-System in wesentlich kürzeren Zeiten, auf größeren Flächen, bei vergleichbarer Empfindlichkeit und Auflösung, Komplementärverfahren waren für den schnellen Nachweis nano- und mikroskaliger Belegung nicht konkurrenzfähig, wobei zusätzliche Materialsysteme mit niedrigem Kontrast (SnO:Ni auf Glas bzw. Cr auf Chromstahl) in der BAM hergestellt wurden. Die öffentliche Präsentation des RSE-Prototyps erfolgte auf der ICSE-7 2016 mit der Publikation 2017 in Applied Surface Science. Zudem wurde im Rahmen dieser Arbeit ein Immunoassay entwickelt, mithilfe dessen zwanzig verschiedene Crosslinker in Hinblick auf ihre Fähigkeit Protein G zu funktionalisieren, untersucht werden konnten. Es konnten fünf Reagenzien identifiziert werden, die eine Derivatisierung von Protein G sowie eine anschließende Immobilisierung des Antikörpers auf dem Protein ermöglichen. Therefore, we have chosen porous glass filters that are available with different pore sizes as raw materials to prepare monolithic columns. We purchased VitraPOR 4 (10-16 μm pore size) and VitraPOR 5 (1.0-1.6 μm pore size) monolithic glass filters. The physical properties of these glass filters were characterized. The surface area, pore size distribution and the porosity were determined using mercury intrusion porosimetry and BET. These glass filters only exhibit flow through pores and therefore show no bimodal pore size distribution in the mercury intrusion curves. Due to their low permeability, the applied filters that exhibit an inner diameter of 8.0 mm and a length of 15.0±0.1 mm could be operated at flow rates more than 10 ml/min. High flow rates are favorable for fast separation experiments. With the availability of ultrashort laser pulses, LIPSS have gained an increasing attraction during the past decade, since these structures can be generated in a simple single-step process, which allows a surface nanostructuring for tailoring optical, mechanical, and chemical surface properties. In this study, the current state in the field of LIPSS is reviewed. Their formation mechanisms are analyzed in ultrafast time-resolved scattering, diffraction, and polarization constrained double-pulse experiments. These experiments allow us to address the question whether the LIPSS are seeded via ultrafast energy deposition mechanisms acting during the absorption of optical radiation or via self-organization after the irradiation process. Relevant control parameters of LIPSS are identified, and technological applications featuring surface functionalization in the fields of optics, fluidics, medicine, and tribology are discussed. Herein, we present the mechanochemical synthesis of three new cocrystals containing the API carbamazepine (cocrystals CBZ:Indometacin 1:1, CBZ:Benzamide 1:1, and CBZ:Nifedipine 1:1). The mechanochemical reaction was investigated in situ documenting a fast and complete reaction within one minute. Online NMR spectroscopy proved the direct influence of the dissolution behaviour of the coformers to the dissolution behaviour of the API carbamazepine. The dissolution behaviour of the organic cocrystals is compared to the behaviour of the pure drug indicating a general applicability of this approach for detailed cocrystal dissolution studies. In the present study, a super martensitic stainless steel sample was heated until complete austenitization and was subsequently cooled down to room temperature. The martensitic phase Transformation started at Ms = 190 °C. Using a monochromatic neutron beam with λ = 0.390 nm, the transmitted intensity was significantly reduced during cooling below Ms, since the emerging martensitic phase has a higher attenuation coefficient than the austenitic phase at this wavelength. It is shown that curves acquired on films of different thickness, at different rates and with different dwell times can be overlapped by rescaling the time or distance axis.When the time or distance axis is rescaled,the force depends only on the surface tension of perfluorpolyether and on geometrical properties of thetip (aperture and perimeter of the tip at a given distance from the apex). Hence, curves acquired with thesame tip overlap. By comparing curves acquired at different rates the dynamics of tip-wetting can be investigated. Fur-thermore, rescaled force-distance curves have been matched with the perimeter of cross sections ofthe tip, i.e. with the perimeter of the three-phase contact line. Such measurements pave the way for anon-destructive investigation of the tip shape. The approach includes (a) a concept for short crack propagation for which the common ΔK concept is not applicable and the crack closure effects are still being gradually build-up, (b) a method for determining fatigue life relevant initial crack sizes as they are needed in any fracture mechanics analysis and (c) multiple cracking and crack coalescence at load levels higher than the endurance limit. The beamline BAMline at BESSY II, which is operated by the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, can provide a monochromatized beam in a photon energy range from 5 keV up to 80 keV with a bandwidth of 2%. Together with the microtomography setup, this enables differential tomography sensitive to any element with N >= 24 (Cr) by using an appropriate K- or L-edge in this range. Here, absorption edge tomography at the Yttrium edge is employed to perform a non-destructive 3D characterization of the microstructure of a high strength Mg-Y-Zn alloy. Initially, we consider utilization of QDs as agants in high-resolution bioimaging techniques that can provide information at the molecular levels. The deverse range of modern live-cell QD-based imaging techniques with resolution far beyond the diffraction limit of light is examined. In each technique, we discuss the pros and cons of QD use and deliberate how QDs can be further engineered to facilitate their application in the respective imaging techniques and to produce significant improvements in resolution. Then we review QD-based point-of-care bioassays, bioprobes, and biosensors designed in different formats ranging from analytic biochemistry assays and ELISA, to novel point-of-care smartphone integrated QD-based biotests. Here, a wide range of QD-based fluorescence bioassays with optical transduction, electrochemiluminescence and photoelectrochemical assays are discussedc. Finally, this review provides an analysis of the prospects of application of QDs in selected important Areas of biology. Herein, we present an in situ investigation of the mechanochemical cocrystal formation of pyrazinamide (PZA) with pimelic acid (PM) using synchrotron XRD. Two new polymorphs of PZA:PM (1:1) were synthesized by milling the starting materials in milling jars of different materials. While Form I is only obtained using a steel jar, Form II can be obtained purely in jars made of Perspex. In situ XRD experiments reveal a direct formation of Form II in Perspex and an intermediate formation of Form II in steel jars converting to Form I upon further grinding. Heating experiments and DFT calculations predict that Form II is the thermodynamically more stable polymorph. Therefore, the reaction progress in the steel jar contradicts Ostwald’s rules of stages as the more stable Form II converts into the metastable Form I. T1 - Assessment of additively manufactured lattice structures for gas turbine applications N2 - Additive Manufacturing (AM) allows for the unique combination of building highly complex parts with integrated functional design. One particular design feature is known as lattice structures, which provide opportunities for innovative applications in the high-temperature regime of gas turbines. These structures require the development of reliable manufacturing methods to produce dependable structural integrity and geometrical accuracy. Consequently, the subsequent validation of these thin structures must also be examined in depth and differently than with current approaches. In this study, a holistic assessment of Ni based high temperature lattice structures is pursued, utilizing a systematic design-follows-complexity approach. Single struts of different geometries and orientations are investigated first, then combined to a variety of unit cell types and finally multiplied to complex lattice structures. Initial test trials with these thin structures proved a dependency of geometrical accuracy, microstructure and structural properties to the AM process setup. The trials underlined the need for design guidelines and a distinction between bulk and thin structures, as they showed differences in microstructural and mechanical behaviour. By application of high resolution, non destructive characterization methods such as computer tomography (CT and µCT), evaluation of defects and the thin structures’ metrology has been performed. First results revealed a number of defects compromising the structural integrity and therefore limiting the lifing behaviour. This was confirmed in destructive testing (e.g. tensile and compression). Furthermore, it was proven that the distribution, the number, the size and the type of defects are also dependent on the AM process setup. While there are large potentials for use of lattice structures in gas turbine applications, the experiments indicate the strong need for an increased understanding of manufacturing and design for these complex structures and that this gap needs to be bridged. Here, we report on an ancient clade of intracellular, bacteriome-located Bacteroidetes symbionts that are associated with grain and Wood pest beetles of the phylogenetically distant families Silvanidae and Bostrichidae. In the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis, we demonstrate that the symbionts affect cuticle thickness, melanization and hydrocarbon profile, enhancing desiccation resistance and thereby strongly improving fitness under dry conditions. Together with earlier observations on Symbiont contributions to cuticle biosynthesis in weevils, our findings indicate that convergent acquisitions of bacterial mutualists represented key adaptations enabling diverse pest beetle groups to survive and proliferate under the low ambient humidity that characterizes dry grain storage facilities. Here we investigate whether dietary choice of macronutrients also plays a role in immunity in the omnivorous cockroach: Blatta orientalis. After challenging individual cockroaches with a common entomopathogenic soil bacterium, Pseudomonas entomophila, we conducted food-choice experiments using two artificial diets differing in their relative protein to carbohydrate ratio. We show for the first time that cockroaches are able to self-select a protein-enriched diet as a response to bacterial infection. This is driven by a sharp decline in carbohydrate intake rather than an increase in protein intake. Additionally, infected cockroaches reduced their overall nutrient intake, which is consistent with an illness-induced anorexia-like response. The feeding pattern of bacteria-challenged individuals returned to normality approx 4 days after challenge. We also investigate whether cockroach survival and hemolymph immunity are enhanced in individuals when restricted to a protein-rich vs. carbohydrate-rich diet. Overall, our findings demonstrate that macronutrient preferences follow a general pattern independent of pathogen type. We shall answer the question whether preferred orientation of surface crystals is the result of oriented nucleation or caused by other orientation selection mechanisms acting during early crystal growth. In both cases, crystal orientation may be caused by the orientation of the glass surface itself or the anisotropy and orientation of active surface nucleation defects. New techniques of experimental characterization of surface-crystallized glasses shall be applied to find answers to the questions posed above. Based on a controlled preparation and annealing of the glass sample surfaces, that includes the defined creation of active nucleation defects, and followed by the microstructural characterization especially during the very early growth stages of separated surface crystals, the orientation relations between defect and initiated surface crystal will be analyzed. T1 - Surface water-induced broadening of crack initiation probability of zinc aluminosilicate glasses N2 - The crack generation probability by Vickers indentation of glass surfaces is known to be influenced by the atmospheric conditions under which the Vickers experiment is performed [1]. However, the effect of surface water due to preparation and storage of the glass surfaces prior to the indentation is less understood. Therefore, zinc aluminosilicate glasses of perzinc, peraluminous as well as nominally NBO-free meta-aluminous composition were prepared by melt quenching. Surfaces of cut and polished specimens of these glasses were either stored for seven days under constant atmosphere (50 °C; 55% RH) or etched (HF: 20vol%; 20 min) shortly before indentation. The obtained results show a strong variation of crack initiation behavior depending on chemical composition of the glasses as well as sample preparation. All experiments were performed in dry nitrogen gas to minimize the influence of atmospheric humidity during indentation. While the regular glass surfaces exposed to humid air prior to Vickers indentation show a broad distribution of crack initiation probability, this distribution narrows down if etched glass surfaces are tested. SNMS depth profiling shows a water enriched layer at the surface (150 μm) for the non-etched and stored specimens leading to the conclusion that surface water causes broadening of the crack initiation probability of glass surfaces. Die hier entwickelten Bauteile sind oft nicht nur multiaxialen mechanischen Belastungen, sondern auch hohen klimatischen Beanspruchungen ausgesetzt. Einsatztemperaturen zwischen -60°C und 100°C bei 10-90% relativer Feuchte sind keine Seltenheit, in der Raumfahrt sind die thermischen Belastungen sogar noch extremer. Die Auswirkungen einer Wechselwirkung extremer klimatischer Beanspruchungen mit multiaxialen mechanischen Belastungen wurden bisher kaum betrachtet. Das Ziel des Projektes ist die Untersuchung des Ermüdungsverhaltens der Faser-Kunststoff-Verbunde in Abhängigkeit von multiaxialer mechanischer Belastung, Temperatur und Feuchte. Dazu werden umfangreiche experimentelle Untersuchungen an Flach- und Rohrproben sowie numerische und analytische Berechnungen durchgeführt. Für die Durchführung der Experimente werden zunächst Glasfaser-Preforms in einem an der BAM entwickelten Haspelverfahren ohne nominelle Ondulation hergestellt. Aus diesen Preforms werden anschließend in einem vakuumunterstützten Resin Transfer Molding (RTM)-Prozess die GFK-Probekörper gefertigt. Bisher wurden die thermoelastischen Eigenschaften und die Festigkeiten des Faser-Kunststoff-Verbundes und der Matrix mit Zug- und Druckversuchen unter paralleler Temperaturlast im Bereich von -60°C bis +80°C ermittelt. Auf der Basis eines Konzeptes zur Berechnung der Matrixbeanspruchung wurde ein Modell zur Bestimmung des Schädigungsbeginns von Laminaten unter quasistatischer thermomechanischer Belastung weiterentwickelt und experimentell validiert. Im weiteren Verlauf des Projekts wird das Verhalten von Glasfaser-Kunststoff-Verbunden unter schwingender Belastung und paralleler Temperaturlast untersucht. Hier wurden bereits Experimente bei Raumtemperatur durchgeführt. Mit dem Verfahren der Grauwertanalyse ist es dabei möglich, in-situ die Schädigung des Werkstoffs zu messen. The new structures were determined ab initio from the powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data. Both compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21 /c as two-dimensional coordination polymers (2D-CPs). The determined structures were validated by extended X-ray absorption (EXAFS) data. Compounds 1 and 2 show different thermal stabilities. The fluorinated CP 1 is decomposed at 300 °C while the nonfluorinated CP 2 transforms into a new phase after thermal treatment at 400 °C. The two hydrated CPs exhibit small surface areas which increase after the thermal posttreatment for 1 but remains unchanged for the dehydrated sample of 2. Dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) experiments indicate that both the dehydrated and hydrated samples of 2 depict no significant differences in their adsorption isotherms. The DVS of water indicates that the phase transition after thermal posttreatment of 2 is irreversible. Here, the thickness dependence of the thermal glass transition temperature of thin films of a PVME/PS blend is investigated by ellipsometry. Its thickness dependence was compared to that of the dynamic glass transition (measured by specific heat spectroscopy), and the deduced Vogel temperature (T0). While and T0 showed a monotonous increase, with decreasing the film thickness, the dynamic glass transition temperature () measured at a finite frequency showed a non-monotonous dependence that peaks at 30 nm. This was discussed by assuming different cooperativity length scales at these temperatures, which have different sensitivities to composition and thickness. This non-monotonous thickness dependence of disappears for frequencies characteristic for T0. Further analysis of the fragility parameter, showed a change in the glassy dynamics from strong to fragile, with decreasing film thickness. Today they are used in a high variety of products, which ranges from food containers over children toys and textiles. Therefore, research on the toxicological potential of silver in a nanoscale form becomes increasingly important for a high amount of studies. Unfortunately the results of these studies are extremely diverse and do not lead to a consistent evaluation of the toxicity of silver nanoparticles. The central problem lies in the use of a wide range of silver nanoparticles, which show a broad size distribution. To overcome this problem we report on the synthesis of ultra-small silver nanoparticles and their quantitative characterization by small-angle X-ray scattering. The particles are highly stable and show no aggregation for more than six months. SAXS analysis via a Monte Carlo data evaluation procedure reveal a narrow size distribution of the silver cores with a mean volume weighted radius of 3.0 nm and a distribution width of 0.6 nm. Dynamic light scattering provides a hydrodynamic radius of 10.0 nm and a PDI of 0.09. The particles are stabilized with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) forming a shell with a thickness of 7.0 nm. It is foreseen to use these thoroughly characterized particles as reference material to compare the catalytic and biological properties of functionalized silver nanoparticles. As a first step the particles are used in the first world-wide inter-laboratory comparison of SAXS. This study reveals that SAXS shows highly reproducible results for particles in the sub-20 nm region independently on the type of instrument used. Furthermore, the stabilizing ligand PAA can be easily exchanged by biomolecules to modify the surface functionality. Replacements of PAA with glutathione (GSH) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) have been performed as examples. With this flexible system first applications regarding biological application in an artificial digestion procedure have been performed. The coefficient of thermal expansion is determined for neat resin and unidirectional reinforced specimens. The dependence of the resin’s thermomechanical properties on the ambient temperature is shown. The point of damage onset at which first cracks appear within the matrix under quasi-static loading is investigated by means of optical grey scale analysis. The correlation between damage onset and effective matrix stress at different ambient temperatures is identified. An approach for the calculation of thermomechanical loads and the prediction of the damage onset by means of inverse calculations is presented. The impact of the strain blocking effect of the matrix is considered as well as residual thermal stresses due to curing and resin shrinkage. Mass, tensile properties and Shore hardness A/D (for polyamide) of the test speci-mens were determined before and after the exposure for 84/42 days in the aged and non-aged fuels of different age. Biodiesel fuels are easily oxidized and contain acids and water. The sealing materi-als: acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, butyl rubber, chloroprene rubber, chlorosulfonated polyethylene and ethylene-propylene-diene rubber and were generally not resistant to biodiesel and heating oil with 10 % biodiesel. Fluorocarbon rubber, fluorosilicone rubber and polyamide were the most resistant materials in all tested fuels up to 70 °C. The degree of damage to the sealing materials increased with higher test temperatures and the age of the fuels. The probabilistic, signal-response model, introduced in 1980s, was developed with experimental observation of eddy-current inspections of flat plate samples, containing surface breaking cracks. A linearity between the peak voltage measured by the testing system, and the crack depth was observed. The influence of the crack depth was therefore seen as the major influencing factor for the POD, whereas other factors merely caused the variability in the measurement. This model has proven itself valid for those inspection cases where there is only one main influencing factor on the POD (usually the flaw size) and other factors have a lesser influence. But with increasing requirements to quantify the capability of NDT systems in complex inspection situations, where several factors have a major influence on the POD, it has become clear that the applicability of this simple model has reached its limits. In disregard to its limitations, this model is regularly applied to those situations in which its fundamental assumptions are invalid, forcing evaluators and NDT researchers into attempts to fit the data to an unsuitable model, instead of fitting an appropriate model to the data. The multiparameter POD model, developed in the early 2010s, enables more factors that influence detection to be simultaneously analysed, making the POD a function of multiple factors. The model is based on the inspection’s physical model, to describe the influence of different factors on the response signal. Measurement variability is obtained from the experiment. Using this model assisted determination of the POD, the necessary number of flaws for evaluation is reduced and a more comprehensive understanding of the inspection is obtained. The gold mosaics examinded originate mainly from germany from 1880 to 1920 and are composed of three parts. They consist of a matching support glass, the gold or silver layer and a cover glass. By examining the morphology and layer thicknesses with the ESEM, and using chemical analysis with the EDX, the relationship of glass composition and damage patterns was established. The glass analysis provided quantitative composition data and made it possible to determine its chemical stability. It supplied the basis for calculating glass characteristics and was referred to when casting suitable historical mosaic glass. The analysis of the qualitative composition of the gold and silver layers also served as a model for reconstruction. After testing selected reconstructed gold mosaics in the climate chamber, the ESEM was used for capturing leaching and other process data and the glass composition was optimized accordingly. Over 100 predominantly historical gold mosaics were analyzed and the results entered into a database which can now be consulted for comparative investigations to determine both origin and date. Hierzu werden verschiedene silikatische Füllstoffe untersucht und in ausgewählte Glasklebstoffe eingearbeitet. Die Zugabe der Füllstoffe ermöglicht eine gezielte Eigenschaftssteuerung von z.B. Viskosität oder Härte. Die eingesetzten Füllstoffe werden hinsichtlich ihrer Zusammensetzung und Korngröße charakterisiert und mikroskopisch betrachtet. Die optimale Dispergierung der Füllstoffe in die Klebstoffe wird ermittelt und in Testreihen überprüft. Die angefertigten gefüllten Klebstoffe werden durch Farb- und UV-VIS Messungen charakterisiert. REM-Aufnahmen geben Aufschluss über die Verteilung der Füllstoffe im Klebstoff. Tests zur Biegefestigkeit sowie die Durchführung dynamisch-mechanischer Analysen (DMA) ermöglichen Aussagen zum Alterungsverhalten der Klebstoffe. Dazu werden die Prüfkörper vor und nach der Alterung im Klimaprüfschrank untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich durch die Beimischung von Füllstoffen Eigenschaften wie Festigkeit, Elastizität und auch Vergilbungsbeständigkeit beeinflussen lassen. Im Praxisbetrieb in den Restaurierungswerkstätten ist es jedoch schwierig, eine optimale Mischung der Komponenten zu erreichen. For petrophysical applications there are several different NMR laboratory devices commercially available varying over a wide range of e.g. magnetic field strength / frequency (2 MHz to 30 MHz), applicable measurement protocols (T1, T2, T1-T2, T2-D, etc.) and sample sizes (2.5 cm to 10 cm in diameter). In this work we present NMR measurements, layed out in a round robin like manner, on a set of 20 sandstone samples. We use three different NMR devices containing two standard setups with homogenous magnetic fields (LIAG and RWTH) and one single-sided setup with gradient field (BGR) to measure T1 and T2 relaxation data. In our evaluation we especially focus on the comparison of the individually inverted relaxation time distributions to quantify the differences arising from different laboratory setups. Diverging results can be deduced on the one hand to the inherit differences between homogeneous and gradient fields but on the other hand also due to quality differences between the two homogeneous setups. T1 - Spontaneous periodic ordering on the surface and in the bulk of dielectrics irradiated by ultrafast laser: a shared electromagnetic origin N2 - Periodic self-organization of matter beyond the diffraction limit is a puzzling phenomenon, typical both for surface and bulk ultrashort laser processing. Here we compare the mechanisms of periodic nanostructure formation on the surface and in the bulk of fused silica. We show that volume nanogratings and surface nanoripples having subwavelength periodicity and oriented perpendicular to the laser polarization share the same electromagnetic origin. The nanostructure orientation is defined by the near-field local enhancement in the vicinity of the inhomogeneous scattering centers. The periodicity is attributed to the coherent superposition of the waves scattered at inhomogeneities. Numerical calculations also support the multipulse accumulation nature of nanogratings formation on the surface and inside fused silica. Laser surface processing by multiple laser pulses promotes the transition from the high spatial frequency perpendicularly oriented nanoripples to the low spatial frequency ripples, parallel or perpendicular to the laser polarization. The latter structures also share the electromagnetic origin, but are related to the incident field interference with the scattered far-field of rough non-metallic or transiently metallic surfaces. The characteristic ripple appearances are predicted by combined electromagnetic and thermo-mechanical approaches and supported by SEM images of the final surface morphology and by time-resolved pump-probe diffraction measurements. T1 - Detection of the electronic structure of iron-(III)-oxo oligomers forming in aqueous solutions N2 - The nature of the small iron-oxo oligomers in iron-(III) aqueous solutions has a determining effect on the chemical processes that govern the formation of nanoparticles in aqueous phase. Here we report on a liquid-Jet photoelectron-spectroscopy experiment for the investigation of the electronic structure of the occurring iron-oxo oligomers in FeCl3 aqueous solutions. The only iron species in the as-prepared 0.75 M solution are Fe3+ monomers. Addition of NaOH initiates Fe3+ hydrolysis which is followed by the formation of iron-oxo oligomers. At small enough NaOH concentrations, corresponding to approximately [OH]/[Fe] = 0.2–0.25 ratio, the iron oligomers can be stabilized for several hours without engaging in further aggregation. Here, we apply a combination of non-resonant as well as iron 2p and Oxygen 1s resonant photoelectron spectroscopy from a liquid microjet to detect the electronic structure of the occurring species. Specifically, the oxygen 1s partial electron yield X-ray absorption (PEY-XA) spectra are found to exhibit a peak well below the onset of liquid water and OH (aq) absorption. The iron 2p absorption gives rise to signal centered between the main absorption bands typical for aqueous Fe3+. Absorption bands in both PEY-XA spectra are found to correlate with an enhanced photoelectron Peak near 20 eV binding energy, which demonstrates the sensitivity of resonant photoelectron (RPE) spectroscopy to mixing between iron and ligand orbitals. These various signals from the iron-oxo oligomers exhibit Maximum intensity at [OH]/[Fe] = 0.25 ratio. For the same ratio, we observe changes in the pH as well as in complementary Raman spectra, which can be assigned to the Transition from monomeric to oligomeric species. At approximately [OH]/[Fe] = 0.3 we begin to observe particles larger than 1 nm in radius, detected by small-angle X-ray scattering. T1 - Structural water as an essential comonomer in supramolecular polymerization N2 - Although the concept of structural water that is bound inside hydrophobic pockets and helps to stabilize protein structures is well established, water has rarely found a similar role in supramolecular polymers. Water is often used as a solvent for supramolecular polymerization, however without taking the role of a comonomer for the supramolecular polymer structure. We report a low–molecular weight monomer whose supramolecular polymerization is triggered by the incorporation of water. The presence of water molecules as comonomers is essential to the polymerization process. The supramolecular polymeric material exhibits strong adhesion to surfaces, such as glass and paper. It can be used as a water-activated glue, which can be released at higher temperatures and reused many times without losing its performance. T1 - Enhanced properties of martensitic stainless steel due to austenite reversion N2 - The novel heat treatment concept of “Quenching and Partitioning” (Q&P) enables producing low alloyed martensitic steels with high strength and formability. Therefore austenite, retaining from a quenching temperature between Mf and Ms, is stabilised by carbon diffusion. This stabilised austenite transforms in martensite (TRIP effect) under mechanical loading. Current investigations on the Q&P heat treatment of martensitic stainless steels reveal a further enhancement of mechanical properties due to higher amounts of austenite. Thus a tensile strength of 1.800 MPa and a maximum elongation of 20 % are possible, while mechanical properties under compression are much higher due to a distinct SD effect. The presentation aims to gain a further understanding of the Q&P heat treatment and the resulting mechanical properties for the steel X46Cr13, especially the mechanical behaviour under dynamic mechanical loading condition. Results of drop work and Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar test confirms the findings of quasi static compression test. Furthermore, Charpy impact tests show higher impact toughness compared to the common heat treatment of quenching and tempering (Q&T). Complementary investigations indicate a higher corrosion resistance of Q&P compared to Q&T. T1 - Einfluss thermischer und optischer Materialeigenschaften auf die Charakterisierung von Fehlstellen in Faserverbundwerkstoffen mit aktiven Thermografieverfahren T1 - Influence of thermal and optical material properties on the characterization of defects in fiber reinforced composites with active thermography methods N2 - In diesem Beitrag werden zerstörungsfreie Untersuchungen mittels aktiver Thermografie an Probekörpern aus CFK und GFK mit unterschiedlichen künstlichen Fehlstellen vorgestellt. Dabei wird die zeitliche und örtliche Temperaturverteilung nach der Erwärmung mit Blitzlampen oder mit einem Infrarot-Strahler mit einer Infrarot-Kamera erfasst. Zur späteren Rekonstruktion der Messdaten wurde ein numerisches Modell entwickelt. Dazu war die Bestimmung der thermophysikalischen und optischen Materialeigenschaften erforderlich, was in diesem Beitrag ebenfalls beschrieben wird. Die Ergebnisse der numerischen Modellierung werden mit den experimentellen Untersuchungen der aktiven Thermografie verglichen. Weiterhin werden die experimentellen Untersuchungen hinsichtlich der beiden Materialsysteme CFK und GFK und unter Berücksichtigung der Teiltransparenz des GFK-Materials sowie der unterschiedlichen Anregungsquellen bewertet. N2 - This paper presents results of the non-destructive evaluation of CFRP and GFRP test specimens with various artificial defects using active thermography. After heating the specimens with flash lamps or with an infrared radiator, the temporal and spatial resolved temperature distribution is recorded with an infrared camera. For the reconstruction of the experimental data, a numerical model was developed. For the numerical simulations, the thermal and optical material parameters had to be determined, which is described in this contribution as well. The results of numerical modelling are compared to experimental data of active thermography. Additionally, the experimental results are assessed related to the two materials CFRP and GFRP by considering the partial transmissivity of the GFRP material, and to the different excitation sources. T1 - Mimicking bug-like surface structures and their fluid transport produced by ultrashort laser pulse irradiation of steel N2 - Ultrashort laser pulses with durations in the fs- to ps-range were used for large area surface processing of steel aimed at mimicking the morphology and extraordinary wetting behaviour of bark bugs (Aradidae) found in nature. The processing was performed by scanning the laser beam across the surface of initially polished flat sample surfaces. A systematic variation of the laser processing parameters (peak fluence, scan velocity, line overlap) allowed the identification of different regimes associated with characteristic surface morphologies (laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS), grooves, spikes, etc.). Additionally, we show that different laser processing strategies, varying laser wavelength, pulse duration and repetition rates, allowed to achieve a range of morphologies that resemble different structures found in bark bugs. For identifying the ideal combination of parameters for mimicking bug-like structures, the surfaces were inspected by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Complementary to the morphology study, the wetting behaviour of the surface structures for water and oil was examined intensively in terms of philic/-phobic nature and fluid transport. With these results in hand, tribological tests were carried out investigating the wear resistance of the laser-induced nano- and microstructures. Our results demonstrate a route towards reproducing complex structures inspired by nature and their functional response in technologically relevant materials. Within this work, different types of steel were irradiated at optimized conditions for the processing of large surface areas. For these nanostructured surfaces, the coefficient of friction (COF) using different lubricants was determined and the corresponding wear tracks were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Our experiments provide a qualification of the tribologicalperformance of the fs-LIPSS on different steel surfaces, which are relevant for technical applications.
