Although considered as the third industrial revolution, one factor still limiting these processes to become completely autonomous is the often necessary build-up of support structures. Besides the prevention of lateral shifts of the part during the deposition of layers, the support assures quality and stability to the built process. The loose powder itself surrounding the built object, or so-called powder-bed, does not provide this sustenance in most existent technology available. Here we present a simple but effective and economical method for stabilizing the powder-bed, preventing distortions in the geometry with no need for support structures. This effect, achieved by applying an air flow through the powder-bed, is enabling an entirely autonomous generation of parts and is a major contribution to all powder-based additive manufacturing technologies. Moreover, it makes powder-based AM independent of gravitational forces, which will facilitate crafting items in space from a variety of powdery materials. If all mechanical parameters of the system were known, the displacement of the system subjected to this load could be easily calculated. If not all of the parameters are known, but the load and the displacement are measured at one location, an inverse problem exists. In the presented problem the nonlinear springs are unknown and have to be determined. At first glance a problem needs to be solved, which is underdetermined due to the number of unknown variables. However, evolutionary computing can be applied to solve this inverse, nonlinear and multimodal problem. Sometimes a prior knowledge exists on certain system properties, which is difficult to implement into analytical or numerical solver. This knowledge can play a decisive role in identifying the system properties and it can be easily included as boundary condition when applying evolutionary algorithm. To test whether the desiccation resistant, highly melanised cell walls would hinder protoplast formation, we treated a melanin-minus mutant of A95 as well as the type-strain with a variety of cell-degrading enzymes. Of the different enzymes tested, lysing enzymes from Trichoderma harzianum were most effective in producing protoplasts. This mixture was equally effective on the melanin-minus mutant and the type-strain. Protoplasts produced using lysing enzymes were mixed with polyethyleneglycol (PEG) and plasmid pCB1004 which contains the hygromycin B (HmB) phosphotransferase (hph) gene under the control of the Aspergillus nidulans trpC. Integration and expression of hph into the A95 genome conferred hygromycin resistance upon the transformants. Two weeks after plating out on selective agar containing HmB, the protoplasts developed cell-walls and formed colonies. Transformation frequencies were in the range 36 to 87 transformants per 10 µg of vector DNA and 106 protoplasts. Stability of transformation was confirmed by sub-culturing the putative transformants on selective agar containing HmB as well as by PCR-detection of the hph gene in the colonies. The hph gene was stably integrated as shown by five subsequent passages with and without selection pressure. The nanoparticle's influence on different flame-retarding systems and possible synergisms in pyrolysis, reaction to small flame, fire behavior and mechanical properties were determined. TRGO has a positive effect on the yield stress, which is decreased by both flame-retardants and acts as a synergist with regard to Young's modulus. The applicability and effects of TRGO as an adjuvant in combination with conventional flame-retardants depends strongly on the particular flame-retardancy mechanism. In the intumescent system, even small concentrations of TRGO change the viscosity of the pyrolysing melt crucially. In case of oxygen index (OI) and UL 94 test, the addition of increasing amounts of TRGO to PP/APP had a negative impact on the oxygen index and the UL 94 classification. Nevertheless, systems with only low amounts (≤1 wt%) of TRGO achieved V-0 classification in the UL 94 test and high oxygen indices (>31 vol%). TRGO strengthens the residue structure of MH and therefore functions as a strong synergist in terms of OI and UL 94 classification (from HB to V-0). Combined photon counting and energy discrimination is implemented in the electronic circuit of each detector pixel. The company XCounter developed detectors based on CdTe single crystals, which can be tiled to larger areas and have a pixel size of 100ìm. The largest area available in beginning of 2014 is 50x75 mm². These detectors have very promising properties, which make them very suitable for NDT applications: 1. A CdTe attenuation layer of 750 µm thickness allows efficient X-ray detection up to ca. 300 keV. In counting mode only photon noise is important; no other detector noise sources need to be considered. There is no Offset signal without radiation. 2. Each of the detector pixels has two energy thresholds. These can be used for dual energy imaging for materials separation. Also the suppression of scattered radiation by energy thresholding will improve the image contrast sensitivity. First experiments will be presented which demonstrate the advantages of this new detector technology over the conventional charge integrating detectors. A challenge is the development of a modified detector calibration procedure, which becomes critical at longer exposure times. In this study, the performance of digital detector systems, involving imaging plates (IP) and digital detector arrays (DDA), was evaluated with respect to the testing class B requirements as formulated in the standard EN ISO 17636-2. As a reference, traditional radiographic film and a Cobalt-60 source was used. With film exposures, testing class B was achieved with Co-60 and Betatron (7.5 MV) at longer exposure times. The preliminary results show that the testing class B was not obtained with the examined digital detector arrays (DDA) and the high resolution imaging plates (IP) , even at 40, 60 and 80 minutes exposure time with a 7.5 MV Betatron. Class A was achieved using high resolution imaging plates with optimized metal filters between object and IPs and a high resolution DDA with intermediate Cu filters. Class A was also achieved applying a DDA with lower basic spatial resolution than required by Table B.13 of EN ISO 17636-2, but using the compensation principle as described in this standard. The next generation of digital detector arrays might potentially be able to obtain class B performance with the expected spatial resolution and sensitivity improvements. However, the explicit role of the solvent is not revealed by this type of methods. In order to better understand its influence, classical mechanical molecular simulations are applied. Um den Teilchenstrahl auf seiner Kreisbahn zu halten, werden mit Hilfe supraleitender Spulen sehr starke Magnetfelder erzeugt. Die hierzu benötigten hohen Ströme werden über Verbunddrähte aus Niob-Titan und Kupfer geleitet. Die Drähte werden u.a. durch Ultraschallschweißungen miteinander verbunden. Eine mangelhafte Verbindung kann zur Erwärmung der Kontaktstelle und in Folge davon zum Zusammenbruch der Supraleitung führen. Auf Anfrage des CERN wurden an der BAM Untersuchungen zur Prüfbarkeit solcher Verbindungen bei Umgebungstemperatur durchgeführt. Es gelang, für einen Verbindungstypen einen Wirbelstromsensor für eine manuelle Prüfung zu entwickeln. Ein Prototyp des Sensors befindet sich beim CERN in der praktischen Erprobung. Insbesondere für Rohrleitungen und ausgedehnte Plattenstrukturen ist eine Vielzahl von auf geführten Wellen basierenden Verfahren in der Entwicklung und teilweise bereits im Einsatz. Aufgrund des komplexen Ausbreitungsverhaltens geführter Wellen werden numerische Verfahren (etwa die Finite Elemente Methode (FEM) oder die Randelementemethode (BEM)) zur Simulation der Wellenausbreitung sowie der Wechselwirkung mit Defekten in Wellenleitern angewendet. Diese Methoden sind für große Strukturen extrem rechenintensiv und umständlich in der Anwendung. Ein ungleich effizienteres Verfahren wurde kürzlich von den Autoren auf Grundlage der Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method entwickelt. Ein semi-analytischer Ansatz erlaubt die Modellierung beliebig ausgedehnter Strukturen bei extrem kurzen Rechenzeiten. Die Wechselwirkung geführter Wellen mit Rissen kann auf besonders elegante und exakte Weise beschrieben werden. Aufgrund der hohen sicherheitstechnischen Bedeutung gibt es hohe Anforderungen an die Leistungsfähigkeit, Dauerhaftigkeit und die Gütesicherheit. Mit einer zerstörungsfreien praxistauglichen Prüftechnik, die eine sichere Überprüfung der Integrität von Glas-Metall Klebverbindungen im Ingenieurhochbau gewährleistet, kann sowohl ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Qualitätssicherung bei der Herstellung von Fassadenelementen aber auch bei der späteren Bauwerksüberwachung im Verlauf der Nutzungsdauer geleistet werden. Für eine Beurteilung der Qualität der Verbundfuge (z.B. bezgl. Standsicherheit) sind dabei Aussagen zur Homogenität der Verbundfuge, zum adhäsiven und kohäsiven Verbundverhalten gefordert. Hierzu besteht aktuell insbesondere Bedarf an zerstörungsfreien praxisgerechten, hoch ortsauflösenden und möglichst bildgebenden Untersuchungsverfahren. Es wird mit einem Matrixarray und mit konventionellen Winkelprüfköpfen eine Prüftechnik vorgestellt, mit der die Wechselwirkung zwischen Ultraschallwelle und Fehlstelle in der Klebefuge untersucht wird. Hierbei ist das erste Untersuchungsziel, mit einer angepassten Ultraschall-Prüftechnik mögliche Inhomogenitäten oder Schädigungsstellen in der geklebten Glas-Metall Verbindung zu detektieren. Über diese qualitativen Aussagen hinaus werden weiterführende Informationen über die flächenhafte Ausdehnung und den Ort einer mangelnden Klebung ermittelt. Dazu werden die Messwerte zusammen mit den Positionen des Ultraschallprüfkopfs aufgezeichnet. Mit Hilfe einer bildhaften Auswertung der gemessenen Ultraschallechos in Abhängigkeit vom Prüfkopfort werden die Möglichkeiten einer detaillierten Integritätsanalyse der Glas-Metall Klebschicht dargestellt. In diesem Beitrag werden experimentelle Prüfergebnisse vorgestellt, die im Sinne einer Verfahrensvalidierung an einem speziellen Beispielprobekörper zur Nachstellung einer SSG-Verglasung (ermittelt wurden und die Detektion fehlerhafter Klebestellen in einer Glas-Metall-Klebverbindung zum Ziel haben. The monolayer was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and angle-resolved near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) experiments and the decomposition of the azide upon irradiation with X-ray beams was investigated. Subsequently, various alkyne-functionalized host and guest molecules were attached to the azide by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. Die Anwendung dieser Verfahren ist aber begrenzt, wenn es sich um die Ortung tiefliegender Bewehrung (ab ca. 30 cm) oder um jungen Beton handelt. Grund ist die Schwächung der Radarpulse durch oberflächennahe Bewehrung oder durch die Betonfeuchte. Das bildgebende Ultraschallechoverfahren bietet den Vorteil, dass die Ultraschallpulse in diesen Fällen eine wesentlich höhere Eindringtiefe erreichen. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird eine Fallstudie vorgestellt, bei der mehrlagig eingebrachte Bewehrungseisen in einer nur einseitig zugänglichen 60 cm dicken Betonplatte geortet werden sollten, um eine Kernbohrung ohne Verkanten der Bohrkrone durchzuführen. Zur Ortung der Bewehrung wurde das Ultraschallechoverfahren mitScherwellen der Mittenfrequenz 50 kHz mit einem automatisch arbeitenden Bauwerksscanner eingesetzt. Aus den flächig aufgenommenen Messdaten wurde mit der Rekonstruktionsrechnung nach dem Prinzip der synthetischen Apertur (SAFT, Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) die Position der Bewehrungseisen bildhaft ortsgenau dargestellt. Dies gelingt mit einer Auswertungsoption, bei der die Phase der reflektierten Ultraschallpulse ermittelt und farbcodiert dargestellt wird (Phasenauswertung). Damit lassen sich Reflexionen der Bewehrung eindeutig von eventuellen Fehlstellen oder Rückwandechos unterscheiden. Die Kernfunktionen des Algorithmus', die wiederholte Auswahl und Gewichtung von Elementen einer Zwischenkonstruktion, werden beibehalten. Abgesehen von Sonderfällen der Röntgen- und Neutronentomographie tritt die MW-Restriktion (neben einer Vielzahl anderer) in Standardkonfigurationen der Elektronentomographie auf. Um den MW-Effekt isoliert zu untersuchen und beurteilen zu können, werden hier vollständige experimentelle Datensätze einer bekannten Porenstruktur um einen Sektor beschnitten sowie MW-Rekonstruktionen von Porenmodellen erzeugt. Die Ergebnisse werden mit zurzeit verbreiteten Algorithmen (Gefilterte Rückprojektion (FBP) und ART-Varianten) verglichen. Aus diesem Grund hat die Feuchtemessung in der Bauwerksdiagnose eine sehr hohe Bedeutung - und im Idealfall sollte sie natürlich alles können: schnell sein, wiederholbar und zerstörungsfrei anwendbar. Zwar gibt es eine Vielzahl an verfügbaren Feuchtemesstechniken, oft fällt es Anwendern aber schwer, einzuschätzen welches die richtige Prüfmethode für ihr Problem ist. Genormt sind nur direkte und zerstörende Verfahren, die zwar teils hochgenau, aber doch nur stichprobenartig Aussagen liefern können. This method is based on attenuation of continuous highenergy spectra. The developed experimental technique consists of a betatron as high-energy (up to 7.5 MeV) X-ray source and a matrix detector with high spatial resolution (400 ìm) for digital X-ray imaging. In order to evaluate the material discrimination capability using dual high-energy X-ray imaging, a test specimen is proposed, comprising step wedges of different low and high atomic number (Z) materials. The selected X-ray spectra for the dual-energy experiments correspond to 3 MV and 7.5 MV acceleration potential of the betatron. We evaluated the ratio between low- and high-energy X-ray attenuation coefficients quantitatively based on simulated poly-energetic high-energy X-ray source spectra and the detector sensitivity using the 'analytical Radiographic Testing inspection simulation tool' (aRTist) developed at BAM. The simulated effective attenuation coefficients are compared with corresponding experimental results in order to establish a method for identification of low- and high-Z materials in the container. Finally, important applications of the proposed technique in the context of aviation security are discussed. In contrast to personal luggage, cargo or structural components constitute a complexity that may significantly hamper the detection of a threat by conventional transmission radiography. A novel approach of interrogating a large object to a certain depth only with a single sided access will be presented. It consists of an X-ray backscatter camera with a special twisted slit collimator for imaging backscattered objects. The new X-ray backscatter camera is not only imaging the objects due to their densities but also by taking into account the influences of surrounding objects. Additionally, it does not only image illuminated features but also depicts shadows from absorbing materials. This is a unique characteristic of the developed X-ray backscatter camera. Experimental mock-ups are conducted imitating container with threats among a complex packing as they may be encountered in reality. At the end, the significant advantages of the presented X-ray backscatter camera in the context of aviation and port security will be discussed. They are generally made-up of thin aluminium (Al) metal sheets and are one of the key components in the aircraft wings. Any defects in the stringer leads to weakening of the stiffness of the whole wing structure and consequently, failures may occur. Hence, the structural integrity of the stringers should be evaluated using reliable non-destructive testing (NDT) methods. Due to the complex shaped structure of the stringer, the one-sided access NDT method such as X-ray backscatter technique is more preferable for the non-destructive imaging. In this paper, we present a new X-ray backscatter technique to image the internal sections of the stringer with only a single-sided access. The whole object was inspected by changing the viewing direction of the X-ray backscatter camera. For the first time, the X-ray backscatter measurements were conducted using high-energy (> 0.5MeV) X-rays and proved the applicability of the present technique to inspect thick carbon-fiber laminated components. In order to improve the inspection time and image quality of the backscatter image, we used high-resolution (180ìm) digital detector arrays (DDAs). At the end, important applications of the presented X-ray backscatter technique to the aerospace industry are discussed. Echomessungen zur Geometriebestimmung sind Stand der Technik. In der Wissenschaft gibt es zahlreiche Ideen, die Messmethodik und die Auswertung weiter zu verbessern sowie den Einsatzbereich zu erweitern. Erste eingebettete Ultraschallsysteme zum Langzeitmonitoring sind installiert, Mehrkanalgeräte ermöglichen immer größere Aperturen und Eindringtiefen, verbesserte Abbildungsverfahren zeigen immer mehr Details. Zusätzlich lassen sich Verfahren aus der Geophysik adaptieren, die weiteren Fortschritt versprechen. Die Seismische Interferometrie dient klassisch dazu, Materialeigenschaften des Erduntergrundes mittels seismischer Wellen zu bestimmen. Derzeitige Anwendungsbereiche sind die Verbesserung seismischer Abbildungsverfahren, Interpolation seismischer Spuren (A-Scans), Bestimmung von Quellparametern oder die Eliminierung unerwünschter Signale in passiven und aktiven Experimenten, hauptsächlich durch Kreuzkorrelation und Bestimmung Greenscher Funktionen. Diese Techniken können auch auf Ultraschalldaten, die an Betonkonstruktionen erfasst wurden, angewendet werden. Moderne Abbildungsverfahren benötigen eine möglichst hohe A-Scan-Dichte und eine genaue Kenntnis des Quellsignals. Beides ist nicht unbedingt gegeben, z. B. wegen der physischen Größe der Sensoren und wechselnder Ankopplungsbedingungen. In simulierten und realen Experimenten wurden interferometrische Methoden zur Lösung dieser Aufgabenstellungen evaluiert. Es zeigt sich, dass fehlende A-Scans kinematisch korrekt interpoliert werden können, wenn ausreichend viele Sender- und Empfängerpositionen genutzt wurden. Amplituden und Signalform sind verändert, können aber durch adaptive Filterung angepasst werden. Die Quellsignalform kann mit hoher Genauigkeit rekonstruiert werden. Die Ergebnisse können potentiell zu einer Verbesserung der Abbildung des Inneren der untersuchten Objekte genutzt werden. To assess the clinical need of rapid diagnostics for infectious diseases based on nucleic acid tests (NATs) we performed and analysed a questionnaire among laboratories participating in corresponding INSTAND ring trials for external quality assurance. The questions concerning new amplification technologies like isothermal nucleic acid amplification, potentially suited to significantly decrease turnaround times, were complemented by questions to evaluate the present status of NATs. Besides end-users, companies were also addressed by sending out a manufacturer specific questionnaire. Analysis of the answers from 48 laboratories in 14 European countries revealed that a much shorter turnaround time is requested for selected pathogens compared to about 2 h or longer when applying temperature cycling amplification, i.e. PCR. In this context, most frequently mentioned were MRSA, norovirus, influenza A and B viruses, cytomegalovirus (CMV) as well as hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). At present, 8% of the laboratories having participated in this survey apply isothermal amplification of nucleic acid to identify infectious pathogens. A1 - Bald, Ilko T1 - On the role of fluoro-substituted nucleosides in DNA radiosensitization for tumor radiation therapy N2 - Gemcitabine (2',2'-difluorocytidine) is a well-known radiosensitizer routinely applied in concomitant chemoradiotherapy. During irradiation of biological media with high-energy radiation secondary low-energy (<10 eV) electrons are produced that can directly induce chemical bond breakage in DNA by dissociative electron attachment (DEA). Here, we investigate and compare DEA to the three molecules 2'-deoxycytidine, 2'-deoxy-5-fluorocytidine, and gemcitabine. Fluorination at specific molecular sites, i.e., nucleobase or sugar moiety, is found to control electron attachment and subsequent dissociation pathways. The presence of two fluorine atoms at the sugar ring results in more efficient electron attachment to the sugar moiety and subsequent bond cleavage. For the formation of the dehydrogenated nucleobase anion, we obtain an enhancement factor of 2.8 upon fluorination of the sugar, whereas the enhancement factor is 5.5 when the nucleobase is fluorinated. The observed fragmentation reactions suggest enhanced DNA strand breakage induced by secondary electrons when gemcitabine is incorporated into DNA. T1 - Dehydration of xylose and glucose to furan derivatives using bifunctional partially hydroxylated MgF2 catalysts and N2-stripping N2 - The current furfural production yield is low due to the use of non-selective homogeneous catalysts and expensive separation. In this work, partially hydroxylated MgF2 catalysts, synthesized using different water contents, were screened during xylose dehydration in water–toluene at 160 °C. The different Lewis/Brønsted ratios on the MgF2 catalysts showed that under-coordinated Mg can isomerize xylose to xylulose, whilst the surface OH-groups were responsible for the dehydration reactions. The presence of glucose as a co-carbohydrate reduced the furfural selectivity from 86 to 81%, whilst it also led to high 5-hydroxymethylfurfural selectivity. The tests catalyzed by MgF2 in combination with simultaneous N2-stripping showed that a furfural selectivity of 87% could be achieved using low xylose loadings. Moreover, the catalysts regenerated by H2O2 showed high activity during the dehydration tests in water–toluene at 160 °C. Iron phosphate glasses are presently being considered as matrices for the storage of radioactive waste, even of those which cannot be vitrified using conventional borosilicate waste glass. In this study, a structural model of 60P2O5–40Fe2O3 glass is proposed. The model is based on the crystal structure of FePO4 which is composed of [FeO4][PO4] tetrahedral rings. The rings are optimized using the DFT method and the obtained theoretical FTIR and Raman spectra are being compared with their experimental counterparts. Moreover, the proposed model is in very good agreement with X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XANES/EXAFS) and Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements. According to the calculations the Fe3+ is in tetrahedral and five-fold coordination. The maximal predicted load of waste constituents into the glass without rebuilding of the structure is 30 mol%. Below this content, waste constituents balance the charge of [FeO4]- tetrahedra which leads to their strong bonding to the glass resulting in an increase of the chemical durability, transformation and melting temperatures and density. Aerodynamic damping is considered in the equation of motion by taking into account the relative velocity between the flow of the wind and the moving structure. The wind flow itself is simulated by wave superposition making necessary assumptions on the lateral correlation between the wind velocities along the cable length. As result from the simulation, the following conclusions can be drawn. The first natural frequency of generally used wide spanning cables lies well below 1 Hz where also most of the energy content of the wind excitation is to be expected. Aerodynamic damping is significant for the moving cables holding very low structural damping which leads to a suppression of resonant amplification. This is particularly of interest regarding the support reaction which is dominated by the mean value and the so called background response. The latter is mostly influenced by the randomness of the wind flow, especially lateral to the main wind direction. We demonstrate experimentally a technique which improves the temporal focus achieved at the source location. The experiment consists of propagating a signal from a transducer within a concrete block to a single receiver on the surface, and then applying time reversal or deconvolution to focus the energy back at the source location. The results show that we are able to generate a focus in time at the correct location. The proposed method is simple and proven to be robust. Additionally, its costs are negligible due to deconvolution being a preprocessing step to the recorded data. The technique can be applied for detailed investigation of the source mechanisms (e. g. cracks) but also for monitoring purposes. Ziel laufender Forschungsarbeiten ist es, die Abbildungsqualität zu verbessern. Mit der aus der Geophysik stammenden Reverse Time Migration, die bereits häufig in der Erdölexploration genutzt wird, lassen sich auch steilere Strukturen über 70° abbilden und somit auch die Unterseite von Einbauten oder Stufen in Bauteilen darstellen. Um die Leistungsfähigkeit des Algorithmus für die zerstörungsfreie Prüfung zu untersuchen, wurden verschiedene Simulationsrechnungen durchgeführt. Dabei wurden typische Prüfprobleme unterschiedlicher Komplexität zunächst in Polyamid nachgestellt. Die Schwerpunkte lagen bei der Darstellung senkrechter Grenzflächen und Hohlstellen. Die Rechnungen dienten neben der Evaluierung und Optimierung des Verfahrens auch der Planung von Experimenten an Probekörpern mit verschiedenen Einbauten. Die Simulationsergebnisse wurden an einem dem synthetischen Modell entsprechenden Polyamidprobekörper überprüft, an dem rauscharme Ultraschalldaten aufgenommen werden konnten. In einer Messreihe wurde in den Probekörper eine Bohrung eingebracht und schrittweise vergrößert. Mit diesen Messungen konnte die Leistungsfähigkeit der Reverse Time Migration auch an realen Ultraschalldaten nachgewiesen werden. The optimization of the process parameters was performed using the results of computer simulations. Welding tests were performed with up to 20 kW laser beam power. It was shown that the AC magnet with 3 kW power supply allows for a prevention of the gravity drop-out for full penetration welding of 20 mm thick stainless steel plates. For partial penetration welding it was shown that an0.5 T DC magnetic field is enough for a suppression of convective flows in the weld pool. Partial penetration welding tests with 4 kW beam power showed that the application of AC magnetic fields can reduce weld porosity by a factor of 10 compared to the reference joints. The weld surface roughness was improved by 50%. Polyethers have been demonstrated to be highly efficient in this respect on smooth surfaces. Here, we investigate the grafting of oligo- and polyglycerols to rough poly(ether imide) membranes as a polymer relevant to biomedical applications and show the reduction of protein and thrombocyte adhesion as well as thrombocyte activation. It could be demonstrated that, by performing surface grafting with oligo- and polyglycerols of relatively high polydispersity (>1.5) and several reactive groups for surface anchoring, full surface shielding can be reached, which leads to reduced protein adsorption of albumin and fibrinogen. In addition, adherent thrombocytes were not activated. This could be clearly shown by immunostaining adherent proteins and analyzing the thrombocyte covered area. The presented work provides an important strategy for the development of application relevant hemocompatible 3D structured materials. T1 - Thermally induced structural rearrangement of the Fe(II) coordination geometry in metallo-supramolecular polyelectrolytes N2 - Rigid rod-type metallo-supramolecular coordination polyelectrolytes with Fe(II) centres (Fe-MEPEs) are produced via the self-assembly of the ditopic ligand 1,4-bis(2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-4'-yl)benzene (tpy-ph-tpy) and Fe(II) acetate. Fe-MEPEs exhibit remarkable electrochromic properties; they change colour from blue to transparent when an electric potential is applied. This electrochemical process is generally reversible. The blue colour in the ground state is a result of a metal-to-ligand charge transfer at the Fe(II) centre ion in a quasi-octahedral geometry. When annealed at temperatures above 100 °C, the blue colour turns into green and the formerly reversible electrochromic properties are lost, even after cooling down to room temperature. The thermally induced changes in the Fe(II) coordination sphere are investigated in situ during annealing of a solid Fe-MEPE using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. The study reveals that the thermally induced transition is not accompanied by a redox process at the Fe(II) centre. From the detailed analysis of the XAFS spectra, the changes are attributed to structural changes in the coordination sphere of the Fe(II) site. In the low temperature state, the Fe(II) ion rests in a quasi-octahedral coordination environment surrounded by six nitrogen atoms of the pyridine rings. The axial Fe–N bond length is 1.94 Å, while the equatorial bond length amounts to 1.98 Å. In the high temperature state, the FeN6-site exhibits a distortion with the axial Fe–N bonds being shortened to 1.88 Å and the equatorial Fe–N bonds being elongated to 2.01 Å. Likewise, host behavioural changes can be a defence mechanism, counteracting the impact of pathogens on host fitness. We apply harmonic radar technology to characterize the impact of an emerging pathogen - Nosema ceranae (Microsporidia) - on honeybee (Apis mellifera) flight and orientation performance in the field. Honeybees are the most important commercial pollinators. Emerging diseases have been proposed to play a prominent role in colony decline, partly through sub-lethal behavioural manipulation of their hosts. We found that homing success was significantly reduced in diseased (65.8%) versus healthy foragers (92.5%). Although lost bees had significantly reduced continuous flight times and prolonged resting times, other flight characteristics and navigational abilities showed no significant difference between infected and non-infected bees. Our results suggest that infected bees express normal flight characteristics but are constrained in their homing ability, potentially compromising the colony by reducing its resource inputs, but also counteracting the intra-colony spread of infection. We provide the first high-resolution analysis of sub-lethal effects of an emerging disease on insect flight behaviour. The potential causes and the implications for both host and parasite are discussed. Sci., 2013, 611, L1). Changes of the NEXAFS spectra characteristic for physical (krypton) and/or chemical/physical modifications of the surface (bromine) upon plasma treatment were observed. Their molecular origin, however, remained elusive. In this work we study by density functional theory, the effects of selected point and line defects as well as chemical modifications on NEXAFS carbon K-edge spectra of single graphene layers. For Br-treated surfaces, also Br 3d X-ray Photoelectron Spectra (XPS) are simulated by a cluster approach, to identify possible chemical modifications. We observe that some of the defects related to plasma treatment lead to characteristic changes of NEXAFS spectra, similar to those in experiment. T1 - Comparison of acidic site quantification methods for a series of nanoscopic aluminium hydroxide fluorides N2 - Quantitative determination of acidic surface sites is highly important for the characterization of solid acids because the activity of a catalyst is often related to the concentration of these sites. A recently developed method using 15N Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR) for the quantification of acidic Lewis and Brønsted sites has been tested for a series of nanoscopic aluminum hydroxide fluorides. Comparison with other methods for the quantitative determination of acidic sites shows that this 15N NMR quantification method is a promising technique for the comprehensive investigation of acidic sites. Three different acidic sites, one Brønsted and two Lewis sites, can be distinguished by their 15N chemical shifts of pyridine and simultaneously quantified under conditions corresponding to catalytic reaction conditions. Determination of the individual concentrations of acidic sites allows further insight into the catalytic process. It was found that the concentration of Brønsted sites correlates with catalyzed conversion of citronellal to isopulegol in the investigated series of catalysts. Additionally, investigations indicate that one of the Lewis sites become blocked during the reaction of citronellal. Task-specific semi-organic crystals combine functions for three different purposes: the carbon and heteroatom source, a foaming agent (CO2) and an in situ generable template (NaCl). Insights to the decomposition pathway were gained through FTIR/MS coupled TGA and an ultrafast out-of-furnace heating procedure and the products were analysed with (HR)SEM/TEM, EELS, FTIR, and N2 sorption. The resulting macroporous carbon foams are excellent supports for metallic nanoparticles due to their hierarchical structure, high surface area and tuneable heteroatom contents. This was demonstrated for catalytically active copper or the magnetic CoNi alloy for water purification. In the first one, quick response (QR) code carriers, which were composed of poly(ester urethane) (PEU) and microencapsulated thermochromic pigments (T-PIGs), differing in color and color switching temperature (CST), were prepared. The obtained material systems exhibited machine-readable QR codes at 23 °C and a two-stage decolorization when heated, culminating in unreadable QR codes at temperatures above the highest CST of the employed T-PIGs. In the second scenario, information carriers were sealed with a dark, thermochromic PEU layer. As a result, the QR codes were hidden at 23 °C and became readable upon heating due to color fading. Beyond the characterization of the employed components, preparation methods, functionality analyses and durability investigations are reported. When heated after thermo-mechanical programming, pronounced shape memory properties could be verified. The thermo-responsiveness of such multifunctional material systems may qualify them for usage in anti-counterfeiting applications. However, the non-destructive three-dimensional elemental sensitive characterization of samples remains a challenge. We demonstrate the use of the so-called 'Color X-ray Camera' (CXC) for 3D measurements for the first time. The excitation of the sample is realized with a thin sheet-beam. The stepwise movement of the sample allows getting the elemental distribution for each layer with one measurement. These layers can be combined to a full 3D dataset for each element afterwards. Since the information is collected layer by layer, there is no need to apply reconstruction techniques, which quite often are the reason for artifacts in the results achieved by computed tomography (CT). The field of applications is wide, as the 3D elemental distribution of a material contains clues to processes inside the samples from a variety of origins. The technique is of special interest and well suited for biological specimens, because their light matrix minimizes restricting absorption effects. Measurement examples of a hornet and the teeth of a Sorex araneus are shown. Hier werden unter Anwendung von 3D Computertomographie (CT) und verschiedenen Techniken, die auf der Röntgenrefraktion basieren, die Porosität und die Porenorientierung in keramischen Cordierit-Dieselpartikelfiltern bewertet. Dabei werden zur Auswertung der Tomogramme die Fouriertransformierten sowie eine neu entwickelte richtungssensitive Bildanalyse (DIVA, directional interface variance analysis) angewandt. Sowohl die genannten Messtechniken als auch der statistische Ansatz gestatten die Extraktion optional ortsaufgelöster oder gemittelter Werte. Es ergeben sich sehr gute Übereinstimmungen der experimentell ermittelten Porositätswerte mit Ergebnissen aus Quecksilberintrusionsversuchen als auch der ermittelten Porenorientierung im Vergleich zu publizierten Angaben zur kristallographischen Textur. The "NanoDefiner" eTool will guide potential end-users, such as concerned industries and regulatory bodies as well as enforcement and contract laboratories, to reliably classify if a material is nano or not. To achieve this objective, a comprehensive inter-laboratory evaluation of the performance of current characterisation techniques, instruments and software is performed. Instruments, software and methods are further developed. Their capacity to reliably measure the size of particulates in the size range 1-100 nm and above (according to the EU definition) is validated. Technical reports on project results are published to reach out to relevant stakeholders, such as policy makers, regulators, industries and the wider scientific community, to present and discuss our goals and results, to ensure a continuous exchange of views, needs and experiences obtained from different fields of expertise and application, and to finally integrate the resulting feedback into our ongoing work on the size-related classification of nanomaterials. By combining the two imaging modes (upper and in-depth observation) complementing each other a better characterisation by a more comprehensive interpretation of the 'consistency' of the challenging specimens, e.g. including details 'hidden' beyond the surface or the real specimen shape at all, has been attained. Static tensile tests were repeatedly interrupted at various predetermined states of strain and the magnetic information was measured by the MO system. But surprisingly, the availability of suitable certified standard reference materials is scarce. Only a few sources were found. For example, BAM provides the database Nanoscaled Reference Materials at http://www.nano-refmat.bam.de/en/ in cooperation with the ISO/TC 229 Nanotechnologies. In addition, two publications from 2013 on nanoscale reference materials are available. This study shows that a simple quaternary ammonium salt combined with urea or glycols forms effective modifiers that produce flexible plastics with good mechanical properties that are comparable to some polyolefin plastics. The processing conditions are shown to significantly affect the structure of the polymer which has a concomitant effect upon the mechanical and physical properties of the resulting plastic. Using a glycerol based modifier results in a totally sustainable and biodegradable material which can be injection moulded. A1 - Schönhals, Andreas T1 - Vibrational density of states of triphenylene based discotic liquid crystals: dependence on the length of the alkyl chain N2 - The vibrational density of states of a series of homologous triphenylene-based discotic liquid crystals HATn (n = 5, 6, 8, 10, 12) depending on the length of the aliphatic side chain is investigated by means of inelastic neutron scattering. All studied materials have a plastic crystalline phase at low temperatures, followed by a hexagonally ordered liquid crystalline phase at higher temperatures and a quasi isotropic phase at the highest temperatures. The X-ray scattering pattern for the plastic crystalline phase of all materials shows a sharp Bragg reflection corresponding to the intercolumnar distance in the lower q-range and a peak at circa 17 nm-1 related to intracolumnar distances between the cores perpendicular to the columns as well as a broad amorphous halo related to the disordered structure of the methylene groups in the side chains in the higher q-range. The intercolumnar distance increases linearly with increasing chain length for the hexagonal columnar ordered liquid crystalline phase. A similar behaviour is assumed for the plastic crystalline phase. Besides n = 8 all materials under study exhibit a Boson peak. With increasing chain length, the frequency of the Boson peak decreases and its intensity increases. This can be explained by a self-organized confinement model. The peaks for n = 10, 12 are much narrower than for n = 5, 6 which might imply the transformation from a rigid system to a softer one with increasing chain length. Here, we report that fluorine, present in the form of a single fluoroalkyl amino acid side chain in the P1 position of the well-characterized serine-protease inhibitor BPTI, can fully restore inhibitor activity to a mutant that contains the corresponding hydrocarbon side chain at the same site. High resolution crystal structures were obtained for four BPTI variants in complex with bovine b-trypsin, revealing changes in the stoichiometry and dynamics of water molecules in the S1 subsite. These results demonstrate that the introduction of fluorine into a protein environment can result in “chemical complementation” that has a significantly favorable impact on protein–protein interactions. Boron mass fractions varied from 9.8 mg/kg in the fruits to 70.0 mg/kg in the leaves. Boron (B) isotope ratios reported as δ11B ranged from -11.0‰ to +16.0‰ (U ≤ 1.9‰, k=2) and showed a distinct trend to heavier δ11B values the higher the plant compartments were located in the plant. A fractionation of Δ11Bleaf-roots = 27‰ existed in the studied bell pepper plant, which represents about about 1/3 of the overall natural boron isotope variation (ca. 80‰). Two simultaneous operating processes are a possible explanation for the observed systematic intra-plant δ11B variation: 1) B is fixed in cell walls in its tetrahedral form (borate), which preferentially incorporates the light B isotope and the remaining xylem sap gets enriched in the heavy B isotope and 2) certain transporter preferentially transport the trigonal 11B-enriched boric acid molecule and thereby the heavy 11B towards young plant compartments which were situated distal of the roots and typically high in the plant. Consequently, an enrichment of the heavy 11B isotope in the upper young plant parts located at the top of the plant could explain the observed isotope systematic. The identification and understanding of the processes generating systematic intra-plant δ11B variations will potentially enable the use of B isotope for plant metabolism studies. Moreover, this interpretation could be confirmed by manipulation experiments of individual molecules on and off a single gold atom. T1 - Tuning the surface properties of novel ternary iron(III) fluoride-based catalysts using the template effect of the matrix N2 - Sol–gel prepared ternary FeF3–MgF2 materials have become promising heterogeneous catalysts due to their porosity and surface Lewis/Brønsted acidity (bi-acidity). Despite the good catalytic performance, nanoscopic characterisations of this type of material are still missing and the key factors controlling the surface properties have not yet been identified, impeding both a better understanding and further development of ternary fluoride catalysts. In this study, we characterised the interaction between the bi-acidic component (FeF3) and the matrix (MgF2) on the nano-scale. For the first time, the formation pathway of FeF3–MgF2 was profiled and the template effect of MgF2 during the synthesis process was discovered. Based on these new insights two novel materials, FeF3–CaF2 and FeF3–SrF2, were established, revealing that with decreasing the atomic numbers (from Sr to Mg), the ternary fluorides exhibited increasing surface acidity and surface area but decreasing pore size. These systematic changes gave rise to a panel of catalysts with tuneable surface and bulk properties either by changing the matrix alkaline earth metal fluoride or by adjusting their ratios to Fe or both. The template effect of the alkaline earth metal fluoride matrix was identified as the most probable key factor determining the surface properties and further influencing the catalytic performance in ternary fluoride based catalysts, and paves the way to targeted design of next-generation catalysts with tunable properties. The cold neutron beam provides a wavelength range which is suitable for phase-and diffraction-contrast imaging such as grating interferometry and Bragg edge mapping. The instrument is well suited for high resolution imaging due to the high efficiency of the very thin scintillators that can be used for the detection of cold neutrons. The twelve units are attached to the concrete surface using a vacuum case which holds them in place during operation. Each LAUS unit can be placed individually depending on the surface condition and optimal ultrasonic condition, e.g. rebar position. Air pressure is supplied to each unit through an air hose. However without post-manufacture HIPing the fatigue life of SEBM parts is currently dominated by the presence of porosity. In this study, the size, volume fraction, and spatial distribution of the pores in model samples have been characterised in 3D, using X-ray Computed Tomography, and correlated to the process variables. The average volume fraction of the pores (b0.2%) was measured to be lower than that usually observed in competing processes, such as selective laser melting, but a strong relationship was found with the differentbeamstrategies used to contour ,and infill by hatching, a part section. The majority of pores were found to be small spherical gas pores, concentrated in the infill hatched region; this was attributed to the lower energy density and less focused beam used in the infill strategy allowing less opportunity for gas bubbles to escape the melt pool. Overall, increasing the energy density or focus of the beam was found to correlate strongly to a reduction in the level of gas porosity. Rarer irregular shaped pores were mostly located in the contour region and have been attributed to a lack of fusion between powder particles. The gas mixing pump allows filling the syringe with different gas compositions; the automated syringe drive allows matching to modulate the signal profiles to those of real samples. The system was designed and its experimental potential explored. The resulting calibration curves were comparable to those obtained by calibration using solid materials of sufficient purity and stoichiometry. However smaller uncertainties and lower limits of quantification (i.e. 0.5 µg and 0.6 µg for O and N, respectively) were found using the gas calibration device. A1 - Pelkner, Matthias T1 - GMR-Streufluss-Prüfsystem zur Detektion verdeckter Fehler in Feinblechen N2 - BAM und TATA Steel untersuchen gemeinsam, ob sich die Prüfung von ferritischen Feinblechen mit einer Stärke von etwa 0,2 mm während der Fertigung durch den Einsatz von GMR-Sensorik verbessern lässt. Hierzu wurde eine Vorstudie an Feinblechen mit eingebrachten Mikronuten durchgeführt. Diese Nuten variieren in ihrer Tiefe zwischen 5 μm und 60 μm und wurden verdeckt mit ZfP-angepassten GMR-Sensorarrays geprüft. Die Ergebnisse der Vorstudie zeigten, dass bei verdeckter Prüfung schon kleinste Defekte mit einer Tiefe von 10 μm - gleichbedeutend mit einer Restwanddicke von 90 % – mit einem SNR > 6 dB detektiert werden konnten, wobei der Abstand der Prüfsonde zur Oberfläche bis zu 500 μm betrug. Zudem wurden in der Vorstudie Untersuchungen zur Prüfgeschwindigkeit und Praxistauglichkeit durchgeführt. Basierend auf den hier gewonnenen Ergebnissen wird ein erster Demonstrator für eine zuverlässige Prüfung eines Teilbereiches von 50 mm des Feinbleches innerhalb einer Produktionslinie aufgebaut. Zum Einsatz kommen Prüfsonden mit jeweils 24 GMR-Sensorelementen. Hierbei wird das Ziel einer umfassenden Prüfung des Feinblechs über die gesamte Breite von 1200 mm angestrebt. Eine besondere Herausforderung stellt dabei die hohe Anzahl von mehr als 1000 Sensorelementen dar. Das hierfür entwickelte Prüfkonzept umfasst neben einer angepassten Erzeugung des Magnetfeldes die Entwicklung einer geeigneten schnellen und sicheren Elektronik für die neuen Mehrkanalprüfköpfe. Rectangular technical iron block samples showed blistering due to intense hydrogen charging and the tomographic method revealed in situ the spatial distribution of hydrogen and cracks. Hydrogen accumulated in a small region around cracks and the cracks are filled with hydrogen gas. Cracks close to the surface contained no hydrogen. Hydrogenous tensile test samples of supermartensitic steel were pulled until rupture and showed hydrogen accumulations at the notch base and in the plastically deformed region around the fracture surface. This paper is the first to illustrate how to assess whether nanoparticle test materials meet the requirements of a "reference material" (ISO Guide 30, 2015) or rather those of the recently defined category of "representative test material (RTM)" (ISO/TS 16195, 2013). The NanoChOp test materials were investigated with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and centrifugal liquid sedimentation (CLS) to establish whether they complied with the required monomodal particle size distribution. The presence of impurities, aggregates, agglomerates, and viable microorganisms in the suspensions was investigated with DLS, CLS, optical and electron microscopy and via plating on nutrient agar. Suitability of surface functionalization was investigated with attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) and via the capacity of the nanoparticles to be fluorescently labeled or to bind antibodies. Between-unit homogeneity and stability were investigated in terms of particle size and zeta potential. This paper shows that only based on the outcome of a detailed characterization process one can raise the status of a test material to RTM or reference material, and how this status depends on its intended use. Die Steigerung der Duktilität kann durch die Zugabe von Kurzfasern erreicht werden. Im Falle einer Rissbildung in der Zementsteinmatrix überbrücken die Fasern den Riss, nehmen die Spannung vollständig auf und stoppen lokal das Risswachstum. Bei weiterer Steigerung der Last reißt die Matrix an anderer Stelle. Auf diese Weise wird die Rissbildung fein verteilt und es werden große Dehnungen erreicht, bevor das Bauteil versagt. Zur Optimierung der Festbetoneigenschaften müssen die Matrixfestigkeit und die Faserart sowie deren Gehalt aufeinander abgestimmt werden. Dabei sind auch die Verarbeitungseigenschaften des Frischbetons zu berücksichtigen. Anhand der Schallemissionen kann die Rissbildung in der Matrix und die Interaktion mit den Fasern analysiert werden. So konnte in ersten Zugversuchen gezeigt werden, dass sich Schallereignisse dem Versagen der Zementsteinmatrix bzw. dem Auszug der Fasern aus der Matrix zuordnen lassen. Damit steht zur Beurteilung des mechanischen Verhaltens von hochduktilem Beton neben der Spannungs-Dehnungs-Linie ein weiteres Verfahren zur Verfügung. T2 - 20. Special attention was drawn to the AF4 membrane. For monitoring possible silver depositions on the membrane, imaging laser ablation coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was used. Our results show that the sample residue on the membrane was below 0.6% of the total injected amount and therefore could be almost completely avoided at low sample concentrations and optimized conditions. By investigation of the AF4 flows using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), we found the recovery rate in the detector flow under optimized conditions to be nearly 90%, while the cross-flow, slot-outlet flow and purge flow showed negligible amounts of under 0.5%. The analysis of an aqueous ionic Ag standard solution resulted in recovery rates of over 6% and the ionic Ag content in the sample was found to be nearly 8%. Therefore, we were able to indicate the ionic Ag content as the most important source of sample loss in this study. Weiterhin sollten diese Untersuchungen als Methodenvalidierungsstudie die Richtigkeit und Präzision der Blitzthermografie nachweisen und Vergleichsinformationen unterschiedlicher Geräteausstattungen liefern. Im Normausschuss NA 062-08-27 AA „Visuelle und thermografische Prüfung“ des DIN werden die Ergebnisse die Erarbeitung eines Normentwurfs zur Blitzthermografie unterstützen. In diesem Beitrag werden die Ringversuche beschrieben und ausgewählte Ergebnisse präsentiert. Entsprechend steigen die Anforderungen an zerstörungsfreie Prüfsysteme zur Gewährleistung des sicheren Betriebes von Komponenten und Strukturen bestehend aus Verbundwerkstoffen. Im Rahmen des EU-Projekes VITCEA (Validated Inspection Techniques for Composites in Energy Applications) wird das Ziel verfolgt, neue Prüfverfahren für moderne Verbundwerkstoffe zu entwickeln und zu validieren. Im Vordergrund steht hierbei als Applikation im Industriesektor Energieversorgung die Prüfung von sicherheitsrelevanten Komponenten von onshore und offshore Windkraftanlagen, wie z.B. deren Rotorblätter und tragende Strukturen. Eine Teilaufgabe innerhalb des Projektes stellen der Vergleich und die Validierung verschiedener Ultraschallprüfmethoden bezüglich ihrer Fähigkeit zum Nachweis der typischen Herstellungs- und betriebsbedingten Materialschädigungen von CFK und GFK dar. Neben verschiedenen konventionellen Ultraschall-Prüftechniken, werden die Phased-Array-Prüfung, insbesondere die Prüfung mit Matrixarrays, sowie die Untersuchung mit berührüngsloser Luftultraschalltechnik bezüglich ihrer Nachweisgrenzen und der Möglichkeiten zur Fehlercharakterisierung an Faserverbundwerkstoffen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse werden mit Untersuchungen mit thermographischen Methoden und Mikrowellentechnik verglichen. N2 - Applications of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites in modern industries are increasing due to their considerable advantages such as light weight and excellent mechanical properties. Accordingly, importance of operational safety of modern structures made of advanced composites by ensuring the material quality has led to increasing demands for development of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) systems. In the context of a European-project entitled 'Validated Inspection Techniques for Composites in Energy Applications' (VITCEA), the aim is to develop and validate traceable procedures for novel NDE techniques with contrasting damage detection capabilities in energy related applications such as wind and marine turbine blades, nacelles, oil and gas flexible risers. As a part of VITCEA, the present study focuses on application of ultrasonic tests (UTs) including conventional, matrix array, immersion and air-coupled, for quantitative defect detection and quality characterization of FRP structures. Results of UTs are subjected to be compared with other NDE approaches which are applicable for inspection of FRPs such as thermography and microwave techniques. Within the present report, the initial results obtained from conventional and immersion UTs are presented and their capabilities as well as limitations are discussed. In order to validate theoretical predictions and simulation results, further experimental tests will be performed in the framework of the project using reference defect artefacts in which the defect sizes and locations are well defined and controlled. Ein wesentlicher Nachteil ist jedoch die begrenzte Energie, die pro Blitz genutzt werden kann. Es stellt sich die Frage, ob sich durch mehrere kurz hintereinander ausgeführte Blitze eine Verbesserung des Energieeintrags erreichen lässt. Zur experimentellen Untersuchung dieser Frage wurde ein Versuchsstand mit vier Blitzlampen so umgerüstet, dass die Blitzlampen zeitgleich oder nacheinander mit einer regelbaren Verzögerung ausgelöst werden können („Multiblitz“). Als Probekörper dienten Platten aus CFK, an deren Rückseite Flachbodenbohrungen (FBB) eingebracht worden waren. Betrachtet wurde jedoch nur der absolute Temperaturhub am ungestörten Material. Die Experimente zeigen relativ geringe Effekte im Prozentbereich, wie sie auch gemäß einer quantitativen Abschätzung zu erwarten sind. Interessanterweise vergrößerte sich der Einfluss der Multiblitzanregung auf die Energieeinkopplung deutlich bei einem etwas vergrößerten Abstand zwischen Blitzlampen und untersuchter Oberfläche. Die Ursache für diesen Effekt ist derzeit unklar, vermutet werden eine Temperaturabhängigkeit und/oder eine Abstandsabhängigkeit des Wärmübergangskoeffizienten im Konvektionsterm. Insbesondere eignet sich Luftultraschall für die Prüfung von Faserkunststoffverbunden und hybrider Werkstoffverbunde, die ihre Anwendung in der Automobilindustrie und Luftfahrt finden. Für den Bau von marktüblichen Luftultraschall-Wandlern werden Piezokomposite mit Anpassschichten versehen. Ihre Herstellung ist allerdings sehr anspruchsvoll und die erreichbaren Signal-Rausch-Abstände sind für viele Prüfprobleme als noch nicht ausreichend einzustufen. Zwecks gesteigerter Effizienz beim Schallübertrag in die Luft wurden Luftultraschall-Sender und -Empfänger aus zellulärem Polypropylen entwickelt. Dieses piezoelektrische Material ist aufgrund seiner geringer Dichte und seiner sehr geringen Schallgeschwindigkeit an die niedrige akustische Impedanz der Luft deutlich besser angepasst, als die üblicherweise verwendeten Anpassschichten. Letztere können bei Polypropylen-Wandlern daher gänzlich vermieden werden. In diesem Beitrag wird Luftultraschall-Prüfung an zwei verschiedenen CFK-Testkörpern vorgestellt: an einer Platte mit T-Stringern aus dem Seitenleitwerk eines Flugzeugs und an einer Platte mit künstlich eingebrachten Fehlern. Es wurde mit unterschiedlichen planaren und fokussierenden Wandlern geprüft. Marktübliche Wandler mit Anpassschichten wurden mit den selbstentwickelten Wandlern aus zellulärem Polypropylen verglichen. Der Signal-Rausch-Abstand und die laterale Auflösung wurden sowohl im Prüfaufbau mit senkrechter Einschallung als auch mit Schrägeinschallung gemessen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Schrägeinschallung zwar den Signal-Rauschabstand erhöht, aber die laterale Auflösung verschlechtern kann. Die Definition der Parameter von Prüfköpfen und entsprechende Methoden zu deren Überprüfung sind in der DIN EN 12668-2 geregelt. Von der BAM werden für diese Aufgaben Richtcharakteristikmessplätze eingesetzt. Um auf die gestiegenen Anforderungen hochauflösender Prüfungen zu reagieren wurde der Richtcharakteristikmessplatz modernisiert. Für den Einsatz moderner und komplexer Rekonstruktionsverfahren bildet jedoch die Kenntnis über Schallfeldgeometrie, insbesondere die Lage und Ausdehnung der Fokusbereichs und die Empfindlichkeit des verwendeten Prüfkopfs in Abhängigkeit zum Schallweg, eine entscheidende Rolle für die Datenrekonstruktion und die abschließende Bauteildiagnose. Für die automatisierte Bestimmung der wichtigsten Kenngrößen (bspw. Lage und Länge des Fokuspunkts bzw. The assessment of the concrete microstructure or microstructural changes like chemical alterations or the formation of microcracks, e.g. due to material aging, freeze-thaw cycles, alkali-silica reaction and ettringite, is not in the focus of ndt research though. Concrete moisture and enhanced salt contents, which usually trigger all chemical microstructural changes, are other material properties, lacking reliable ways of measuring. But, the assessment of such material properties, on the long term also in a depth resolved manner, is definitely important, when the sustainability of our concrete infrastructure buildings shall be evaluated. New consideration like the potential use of ndt, in particular the combination of different methods and alternate ways of data analysis are subject of research currently undertaken at BAM. These approaches involve for example working towards (i) a deeper understanding of how to measure moisture distributions reliably and follow transport phenomena, (ii) the use of stray phenomena in radar and ultrasound to locate material inhomogeneities or (iii) the application of LIBS for the delineation of diffusion and migration processes but also (iv) the use of new tools for data analysis like data fusion. This includes a dispersion of a spherical quantum dot (QD) with an ideally isotropic emission, a solution of a common small organic dye in a fluid solvent as well as dispersions of elongated quantum dot rods (QDR) with an anisotropic luminescence and a small organic dye in a rigid polymeric matrix, as ideally anisotropic emitter. Our results show that for instruments lacking polarizers, anisotropy-related measurement uncertainties of relative photoluminescence quantum yields can amount to more than 40%, with the size of these systematic errors depending on the difference in emission anisotropy between the sample and the standard. The catalytic reduction of uranine was conducted in aqueous solution using AuNPs as nanocatalyst and sodium borohydride as reducing reagent, which was monitored by fluorescence and UV-vis spectroscopy. The reaction rate was highly dependent on the concentration, size and dispersion state of AuNPs. When AuNPs aggregated, their catalytic ability decreased, and thereby a label-free fluorescent assay was developed for the detection of melamine, which can be used for melamine determination in milk. In addition, a fluorescent immunoassay for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) was established using the catalytic reaction for signal amplification based on target-induced concentration change of AuNPs, where AFB1-BSA-coated magnetic beads and anti-AFB1 antibody-conjugated AuNPs were employed as capture and signal probe, respectively. The detection can be accomplished in 1 h and acceptable recoveries in spiked maize samples were achieved. The developed fluorescence system is simple, sensitive and specific, which could be used for the detection of a wide range of analytes. For this purpose, two series of 100 nm-sized polymer nanoparticles stained with different concentrations of the fluorescent dyes DY555 and DY680 were prepared, absorbing/emitting at around 560 nm/590 nm and 695 nm/715 nm, respectively. SAXS measurements of these particle series and a corresponding blank control (without dye) revealed similar sizes of all particles within an uncertainty of 1 nm. DLS measurements carried out at three different laboratories using four different DLS instruments and two different laser wavelengths, i.e., 532 nm and 633 nm, revealed also no significant changes in size (intensity-weighted harmonic mean diameter, ZAverage) and size distribution (polydispersity index, PI) within and between the two dye-stained particle series and the blank sample. Nevertheless, a significant decrease of the detected correlation coefficients was observed with increasing dye concentration, due to the increased absorption of the incident light and thus, less coherent light scattering. This effect was wavelength dependent, i.e. only measurable for the dye-stained particles that absorb at the laser wavelength used for the DLS measurements. The width of the magnetic domains wasanalyzed at different locations within the crystal. Magnetic domains close to the tip of the wedge are much smaller than in the bulk. In several small-scale fire tests addressing the ignition of a defined specimen with a small ignition source, well-adjusted melt flow and dripping are usually beneficial to pass the test. The presence of flame retardants often changes the melt viscosity crucially. The influence of certain flame retardants on the dripping behaviour of four commercial polymers, poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), polypropylene (PP), polypropylene modified with ethylene-propylene rubber (PP-EP) and polyamide 6 (PA 6), is analysed based on an experimental monitoring of the mass loss due to melt dripping, drop size and drop temperature as a function of the furnace temperature applied to a rod-shaped specimen. Investigating the thermal transition (DSC), thermal and thermo-oxidative decomposition, as well as the viscosity of the polymer and collected drops completes the investigation. Different mechanisms of the flame retardants are associated with their influence on the dripping behaviour in the UL 94 test. Reduction in decomposition temperature and changed viscosity play a major role. A flow limit in flame-retarded PBT, enhanced decomposition of flame-retarded PP and PP-EP and the promotion of dripping in PA 6 are the salient features discussed. Various methods and sensors are used for this purpose. But the technologies available today have difficulties in detecting slowly progressing locally confined damages. Extensive investigations or instrumentations are required so far for this purpose. In this study we present new sensors and data processing methods for ultrasonic transmission, which can be used for non-destructive long term monitoring of concrete. They can be mounted during construction or thereafter. Larger volumes can be monitored by a limited number of sensors for changes of material properties. The principles of ultrasonic transmission and influencing factors are presented. This latter include load, damages as well as environmental parameters as temperature or moisture. Various methods for data processing, e. g. coda wave interferometry are introduced. They allow the detection of very small changes in the medium. The embedded sensors are shown including mounting and operation. Application examples so far include small scale laboratory freeze-thaw experiments, localizing loads in larger concrete models, monitoring load effects on real structures as well as detecting acoustic events. Some sensors are operating already for several years. The sensors can be used as transmitter or receivers or switched between both roles. While most of the previous experiments have been active (at least one sensor serving as transmitter), new studies show that the sensors are useful as well for passive measurements, e. g. in acoustic emission or time reversal experiments. Besides application in civil engineering our setups can also be used for model studies in geosciences. Moisture penetrates inside the structure and transports adverse chemicals. The paper presents an investigation about the reliability of available commercial non-destructive evaluation techniques to reliably estimate the depth of surface-breaking cracks in reinforced concrete structures. Aim of the study was the investigation of surface-braking cracks under laboratory conditions. Commercial acoustic devices as impact echo equipment, single ultrasonic transducers and arrays were applied even if they have not been developed for this purpose. The commercial software and descriptions for application was followed strictly to compare the function, precision and repeatability of the measurements. Both, perpendicular notches and cracks have been considered. The study was completed with a discussion about reference specimens. The study was the basis for formulation of gaps in research. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has initiated and funded a Project. T1 - Data aggregation for improved honeycomb detection in concrete using machine learning-based algorithms N2 - We present the results of several machine learning (ML)- inspired data fusion algorithms applied to multi-sensory nondestructive testing (NDT) data. Our dataset consists of Impact-Echo (IE), Ultrasonic Pulse Echo (US) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data collected on large-scale concrete specimens with built–in simulated honeycombing defects. The main objective is to improve the detectability of honeycombs by fusing the information from the three different sensors. We describe normalization, feature detection and optimal feature selection. We have used unsupervised and supervised ML, i.e., classification and clustering, for data fusion. We demonstrate the advantage of data fusion in reducing the false positives up to 10% compared to the best single sensor, thus, improving the detectability of the defects. The methods were evaluated on a concrete specimen. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was demonstrated on a separate full-scale concrete specimen. The results indicate the transportability of the conclusions from one specimen to the other. A validated mobile LIBS-system for on-site application on building materials is under development at BAM in cooperation with industrial partners (system developers and companies), who will use this technique for investigation on building structures like bridges and parking decks. The system is designed to measure the content of harmful species like chlorine, sulfur or alkalis, to give the engineer a tool for the estimation of the condition of concrete structures and for quality assurance during concrete repair work on-site. In these work results of on-site measurements on a chloride contaminated bridge are shown. Further work will focus on providing guidelines to establish LIBS as a standard procedure for chemical investigations of building materials. However, for its application outdoors it is necessary to analyse unavoidable influences, such as weather. Therefore an ultrasonic monitoring system with 40 ultrasonic sensors (20 transmitters, 20 receivers; 25 kHz central frequenzy) has been implemented on a concrete specimen (4×5×0.8m3), that is exposed to weather conditions. Data from 400 sensor combinations was collected over a period of six months with an interval of two hours. The data was evaluated by both qualitative (correlation techniques) and quantitative (ultrasonic velocity changes via Coda Wave Interferometry and time of flight method) evaluation methods and compared to the temperature changes caused by weather.
