This is particularly true for the development of advanced materials with optoelectronic and biomedical applications. While a growing number of mechanically flexible crystalline molecular materials are being reported,1 they remain scarce. At present, most discoveries are serendipitous, as limited design strategies are currently known. Amongst these strategies Desiraju et. al. suggested that elastic materials must contain herringbone structures.2 For plastic crystals, the so-called ‘shape-synthon’ strategy has been developed, in which weak non-covalent interactions are introduced into structures to facilitate mobility of molecules.3 This includes formation of slip planes. Generally, these models have performed very well at predicting and rationalizing the mechanical properties of new materials. Recently, however, a family of one-dimensional covalent networks (coordination polymers; CPs) has been described, which show mechanical elasticity. With drastically different structural chemistry, these systems do not seem to adhere to the currently established rules. Herein, we present the first such system: a plastically bendable crystal of a 1D CP, [Zn(-Cl)2(3,5-Cl2Py)2]n (where 3,5-Cl2Py = 3,5-dichloro pyridine). This CP crystallizes in a tetragonal, and can therefore be bent over two major faces to acute angles without fracturing. We conducted bending and indentation experiments to quantify the mechanical properties of the CP crystal. This was complimented by Vibrational (Raman and Terahertz) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations for deeper understanding of molecular level structural deformation. State-of-the-art strategies rely on energy-intensive incineration, which releases greenhouse gases and smaller, volatile PFAS derivatives. Here, we present a fast, simple, and sustainable method for the complete degradation of PFAS leveraging mechanochemistry to break down the persistent carbon-fluorine bonds. Our findings indicate that liquid-assisted grinding conditions accelerate the degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid compared to neat grinding conditions, resulting in a significant reduction in energy consumption. Moreover, the fluoride released during the process binds to inorganic additives, allowing fluorine recovery as crystalline salts and preventing the formation of secondary toxic waste. The method has strong potential for scaling up and offers a green and viable solution for real-world application in PFAS decontamination. Phosphate, PO43-, and many transition metals e.g. Ni and Co are listed as critical raw materials (CRMs) due to their indispensable role in numerous industrial processes. However, these elements can also exert harmful environmental impacts, with phosphorus being a major contributor to anthropogenic eutrophication and transition metal ions acting as toxic pollutants, particularly in ground- and wastewaters. Typically, separate pathways have been considered to extract hazardous substances such as transition metals or phosphate, independently from each other. Here, we report the crystallization pathways of transition metal phosphate (TMP) compounds, M-struvite and M-phosphate octahydrate with M = Ni2+, Co2+, NixCo1-x2+, NH4MPO4∙6H2O, M3(PO4)2∙8H2O from aqueous solutions. The co-precipitation of these particular TMP compounds from industrial and agricultural wastewaters has high potential as a P- and 3d metal recovery route. For efficient extraction and transformation of the TMPs, a comprehensive understanding of their nucleation and crystallization pathways from aqueous solutions is required. While the crystallization mechanisms of magnesium or calcium phosphate-bearing phases have been researched for many decades (e.g. struvite, apatite), investigations into TMP materials are relatively scarce and often focus on the adsorption of transition metals on the surface instead of their actual incorporation in minerals. In our study, we investigated in detail the precipitation process of several Co and Ni phosphates using ex- and in-situ spectroscopic-, spectrometric- and diffraction-/scattering-based techniques. We show that the crystallization behavior of TMPs, indeed deviates from a classical crystallization paradigm and follows a non-classical multi-step pathway. Our work extends the understanding of TMP crystallization by elucidating the formation of amorphous precursors preceding the final crystalline phase This time-dependent transition of the transition metal precursor phases can be observed by electron-imaging/tomography depicting a progressively changing amorphous solids until their ultimate reconfiguration to a crystal (Figure 1). Here, the two-metallic NixCo1-x-mixtures deviated anomalously in their reaction kinetics, crystallization outcome and participation of both metals from their pure endmembers. By measuring the crystallization with in-situ X-ray scattering and pH using a flow-through setup geometry, a complex prolonged interplay among nucleating entities e.g. and amorphous or crystalline solids could be observed in the metal phosphate mixtures reaching equilibrium after almost two and a half hours (Figure 2). Our results provide a holistic perspective on the crystallization behavior of transition metal phosphate phases, shedding light on their unique nucleation and growth kinetics involving structural and chemical transformations of the intermediate phases. Thus, the generation of higher energy density fuel like hydrogen from renewable resources become the only way to solve the zero-emission energy system while avoiding the expensive batteries as an energy storage option. Therefore, water electrolysis cells to produce hydrogen and oxygen by storing of solar/wind energy in chemical bonds is a fruitful alternative for renewable and long-term energy generation. Thus, designing inexpensive water-splitting electrocatalyst material becomes a field of research of utmost importance. High entropy metal hydroxide organic frameworks (HE-MHOFs) are composed of high entropy hydroxide layer inside MOFs, resulting in a high degree of structural complexity and diversity than conventional MOFs. The concept of ‘high entropy’ refers to multiple types of metal ions (Metal = TM) in a near equimolar ratio in the same framework, creating a high degree of disorder and many possible structural configurations. Here, the HE-MHOF successfully synthesized by a conventional solvothermal process, crystallizes in the single phase with significant lattice distortion. A special-quasi-random (SQS) structure was simulated with equimolar compositions (~20% TM = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) and a comparison was made with the ICP-AES (inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy), XANES (X-ray absorption near edge structure) and XAFS (X-ray absorption fine structure) observations. Further, the elemental mapping (Energy dispersive Spectroscopy) of HE-MHOF shows the presence of all five different metals in the same crystallite to substantiate the ‘high entropy’ state of the MOF. The HE-MHOF offers improved thermal stability than mono-metallic MHOF and exhibit unique properties compared to traditional monometallic (Ni2+) MOF variants. Firstly, to elucidate the effect of the multimetallic system on the catalytic performance, we have performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate pre-redox cycles involved in the catalytic activation of HE (and Ni)-MOFs. HE-MHOF is further investigated as an electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to its special high entropy hydroxide layered structure and electronic properties. Our DFT results have examined the traditional proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) steps involving the single transition-metal site. The scrutiny of d-band centers and their behaviour in catalytic upgradation is investigated with density of states (DOS) analysis. It exhibits outstanding performance towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) comparable to the experimental findings, which is also comparable to state-of-the-art OER catalysts based on precious metals such as iridium oxide and platinum carbon. We have considered different electrolyte solutions to elucidate the fast kinetics oxygen evolution reaction in the presence of various external nucleophilic anions. In hydroxyl-based MOFs, electrolytes' influence can substantially enhance catalytic activities. Here, with the help of DFT simulations, we have investigated the effect of the nucleophilicity of anion on each elementary reaction involved in the PCET mechanism of OER. Different routes have been explored to achieve the large-scale production of ZIF-8. However, these synthetic procedures are often inconsistent with the principles of sustainable chemical manufacturing. Aimed at developing scalable and greener production of ZIF-8, we adapted our previously reported in-batch „mix and wait“ synthesis[2] to continuous extrusion. To optimize the process, in-situ Raman spectroscopy was applied. Finally, we developed a simple and comprehensive approach to evaluating the environmental friendliness and scalability of MOF syntheses in view of their large-scale production. The synthesis of ZIF-8 was performed using a twin-screw extruder ZE 12 HMI equipped with an automatic volumetric feeder ZD 12B (Three-Tec GmbH, Switzerland) and peristaltic pump BT-L (Lead Fluid, China). The process was monitored in six different zones using a Raman RXN1TM analyzer (Kaiser Optical Systems, France) with a non-contact probe head. PMMA screw-in parts, which are transparent to Raman laser radiation, were specially manufactured to provide the laser focus within the barrel. PXRD, TGA, N2 adsorption measurements, and SEM were used as complementary techniques to characterize the extrudates. The batch ‘mix and wait’ synthesis of ZIF-8, consisting of bringing solid basic zinc carbonate and 2-methylimidazole in contact in a closed vial, was successfully adapted to reactive extrusion. The crystalline ZIF-8 continuously forms in the extruder under the mixing of solid reagents in the presence of a catalytic amounts of H2O or EtOH. The temperature, type of liquid, feeding rate, and excess of linker were optimized using in situ Raman spectroscopy. Pure and highly crystalline ZIF-8 was isolated at 40 °C by adding a catalytic amount of EtOH and a linker excess of 25%. The resulting material has excellent porosity with the BET surface area slightly exceeding that of the reference Basolite® Z1200 (1816 vs. 1734 m2 g–1). The reaction could yield ~ 3 kg d–1 assuming a continuous operation, with a space-time yield of ca. 67,000 kg m–3 d–1. The present method was compared to the published pathways based on Green Chemistry principles and proved to have the highest potential for large-scale production of ZIF-8. Simvastatin is typically employed as a solid and it is well known that, in this case, the detection and characterization of polymorphism is of considerable importance. Polymorphs differ by their packing arrangements and also, occasionally, by the conformations of the molecules in the crystal lattice. These structural variations are normally reflected by differences in physical properties, such as solubility and dissolution rate in a given media, which may significantly affect the bioavailability of a drug. The lack of control of polymorphism can, therefore, play havoc with the safe use of a drug. The investigations of the crystallization process of paracetamol were performed with in situ analytical techniques and theoretical simulations to gain a comprehensive insight into processes, occurring intermediates, and required reaction conditions. While knowledge about measuring techniques, occurrence and exposure was improved substantially, questions on toxicological impact of MNP remained unclear. A major reason for that are the continued remaining knowledge gaps with regard to mechanistical understanding of MNP effects. Our work aimed at investigating MNP properties, protein interactions, and cellular effects in combination. Therefore, we characterized MNP-protein- adsorption, changes in protein structure, cellular uptake and cellular modes of action. In a first study, we studied the molecular interactions of β-lactoglobulin, a serum and storage protein, with different MNP materials1. We identified structural changes, depending on physicochemical MNP properties, using FTIR- and fluorescence spectroscopy. Furthermore, we investigated cellular uptake of MNP individually and as a complex with β-lactoglobulin and studied the effects on cell growth and viability, using colorimetric MTT testing, flow cytometry, and cell impedance measurements. MNP material properties, especially hydrophobicity, had an impact on protein folding and consequently also on cellular interactions. In a second study, we applied α-amylase, an extracellular digestive protein with enzymatic activity. Here, in addition, we investigated the influence of MNP binding on enzyme activity, using a colorimetric starch degradation assay. We observed for the most MNP, that adsorption processes resulted in a decrease of enzyme activity. Furthermore, we used Alexa633 staining to visualize MNP uptake with and without the presence of α-amylase. Taken together, this work aims to close data gaps regarding mechanistical effects of MNP on cells by investigating direct MNP-protein-interactions. Mechanistic knowledge is crucial for understanding toxicological effects of MNP, and therefore, also for the risk assessment of possible hazards on human health. T2 - 92. Combined with universal, automat-ed data correction pipelines, as well as our analysis and simulation software, this led to more than 40 papers2 in the last 5 years with just over 2 full-time staff members. While this approach greatly improved the consistency of the results, the consistency of the samples and sample series provided by the users was less reliable nor necessarily reproducible. To address this issue, we built an EPICS-controlled, modular synthesis platform to add to our laboratory. To date, this has prepared over 1200 additional (Metal-Organic Framework) samples for us to meas-ure, analyse and catalogue. By virtue of the automation, the synthesis of these samples is automat-ically documented in excruciating detail, preparing them for upload and exploitation in large-scale materials databases alongside the morphological results obtained from the automated X-ray scat-tering analysis. Having developed these proof-of-concepts, we find that the consistency of results are greatly im-proved by virtue of their reproducibility, hopefully adding to the reliability of the scientific findings as well. Additionally, the nature of the experiments has changed greatly, with much more emphasis on preparation and careful planning. This talk will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this highly integrated approach and will touch upon upcoming developments. This method finds optimal parameters of a scattering model composed of analytical expressions. SASfit represents such a classical curve fitting toolbox: it is one of the mature programs for small-angle scattering data analysis and has been available and used for many years. The latest developments [1] will be extended by improving the interoperability of the extensive data base of models with third-party analysis software. An updated format of model definitions is also presented, which allows model function plug-ins to be used with the Python language. To complement the classical curve fitting method, the user-friendly opensource Monte Carlo regression package McSAS was developed. Most importantly, the form-free Monte Carlo approach of McSAS means that it is not necessary to provide any further mathematical restrictions to the Parameter distribution. Future developments include separating the core optimization from the GUI (allowing 'headless' integration), as well as parallel computing which reduces the computing time proportional to the number of available computing cores. The headless mode is presented by an example of Operation within interactive programming environments such as a Jupyter notebook. The promising results of Monte Carlo based data analysis for determining form-free Parameter distributions motivated the evaluation of the method with dynamic light scattering (DLS) data. For this purpose, the method was adapted for analyzing correlation curves such as those from multi-angle dynamic light scattering (DLS) data. The development of McDLS intends to overcome limitations of existing methods at reliably determining the modality of size distributions. An example of Monte Carlo based data analysis of multimodal DLS measurements will be presented. A central focus of our work has been the development and application of time-resolved in situ monitoring techniques for mechanochemical processes. Our research on real-time synchrotron X-ray diffraction has enabled unprecedented insights into reaction pathways and kinetics. Recently, we have successfully applied energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction for time-resolved in situ monitoring of reactive extrusion, marking a significant step towards ‘lighting up’ industrial-scale mechanochemistry. Small, often isobaric heterogeneities in topology or microstructure can usually not be simply separated chromatographically or distinguished by any common detector. Nowadays a wide range of different analytical separation techniques and multi-detection possibilities are available. The challenge consists in a clever combination of these techniques with a specific approach of data analysis. In this presentation different liquid chromatographic separation modes were combined with Electrospray Time-of-Flight mass spectrometry. The online coupling allows the analysis of reconstructed ion chromatograms (RIC) of each degree of polymerization. While a complete separation often cannot be achieved, the derived retention times and peak widths lead to information on the existence and dispersity of heterogeneities in microstructure or topology, that are otherwise inaccessible This method is suitable to detect small differences in e. g. branching, topology, monomer sequence or tacticity and could potentially be used in production control of oligomeric products or other routinely done analyses to quickly indicate deviations from set parameters. Based on a variety of examples e.g. the topology elucidation of branched EO-PO copolymers, the possibilities and limitations of this approach were demonstrated. Currently the characterization and identification of pollen is time-consuming since it mainly relies on the microscopic determination of the genus-specific pollen morphology. A variety of new analytical approaches, like Raman - and fluorescence spectroscopy have been proposed in order to develop fast and reliable pollen identification. Recently matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was initially applied for the rapid investigation of such complex biological samples. Taxonomic differences and relations of single pollen grains could be identified. Both commercially available lyophilized pollen and fresh pollen acquired from biological samples collected in parks and in the Botanical Garden Berlin in the years 2013-2015 were investigated. The samples were prepared by formic acid extraction in the gas phase and spotted with HCCA matrix. A variety of new approaches, like a newly developed MALDI target with micrometer sample spots sizes, were tested for their suitability. The obtained mass spectral data were investigated by principal component analysis (PCA). The applicability of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for the classification of pollen according to their taxonomic relationships was proven. Specifically, chemical differences in the mass spectra at the levels of plant order, genus and in many cases even of species could be identified. Based on these results, further investigations have been undertaken to optimize the sample preparation for the classification of single pollen grains in mixtures of pollens. A novel MALDI-target design was developed to enhance the phenotypic information of pollens in their mass spectra. The combination of mass spectral patterns and multivariate statistics provide a powerful tool for the investigation of structural correlations within mixtures. The results can be used to improve the reconstruction of taxonomic relations of single species in various mixtures and might be useful for the development of a fast routine method to identify pollen based on mass spectrometry. This study addresses the structural characterization of PC-PDMS-copolymers using different liquid chromatographic techniques, including two dimensional combinations, hyphenated to MALDI-mass spectrometry and FTIR. A variety of spectroscopic and spectrometric approaches have been proposed to develop a fast and reliable pollen identification using specific molecular information. Amongst them, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) shows a high potential for the successful investigation of such complex biological samples. Based on optimized MALDI sample preparation using conductive carbon tape, the application of multivariate statistics (e.g. principal components analysis, PCA) yields an enormous improvement concerning taxonomic classification of pollen species compared to common microscopic techniques. Since multivariate evaluation of the recorded mass spectra is of vital importance for classification, it’s helpful to implement the applied sequence of standard Matlab functions into a graphical user interface (GUI). In this presentation, a stand-alone application (GUI) is shown, which provides multiple functions to perform fast multivariate analysis on multiple datasets. The use of a GUI enables a first overview on the measured dataset, conducts spectral pretreatment and can give classification information based on HCA and PCA evaluation. Moreover, it can be used to improve fast spectral classification and supports the development of a simple routine method to identify pollen based on mass spectrometry. T2 - 12. To overcome these limitations, we present a scalable solid-state method for producing MOF-based biocomposites via continuous reactive extrusion. The process begins with rapid model reactions using hand-mixing[2] to encapsulate a variety of biomolecules into zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), including proteins, carbohydrates, and enzymes, thereby enabling rapid screening and optimization of reaction conditions. The mild synthesis conditions preserve the catalytic activity of glucose oxidase, confirming the suitability of the method to sensitive biomaterials. Building on this, we translated the batch protocol to twin-screw extrusion,[3] enabling continuous and scalable synthesis of biocomposites such as bovine serum albumin (BSA)@ZIF-8 with tunable protein content. The extrusion process yielded highly crystalline, porous materials with protein loadings of up to 26 wt% and encapsulation efficiencies as high as 96%. The production rate reached 1.2 kg d⁻¹, significantly exceeding previously reported continuous methods.[4] To demonstrate the industrial viability of the method, we extended the approach to produce shaped ZIF-8 monoliths loaded with hyaluronic acid (HA) in a single-step extrusion. These monoliths retained their structural integrity during washing and released HA without measurable degradation, as confirmed by size-exclusion chromatography. Our study opens new avenues for the industrial implementation of MOF biocomposites and establishes reactive extrusion as a robust platform for their scalable synthesis and shaping, expanding the toolkit for drug delivery and biocatalytical applications.
