T1 - CEQAT-DGHS interlaboratory tests for chemical safety: Validation of laboratory test methods by determining the measurement uncertainty and probability of incorrect classification including so-called “Shark profiles” N2 - Laboratory test results are of vital importance for correctly classifying and labelling chemicals as “hazardous” as defined in the UN Globally Harmonized System (GHS) / EC CLP Regulation or as “dangerous goods” as defined in the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. Interlaboratory tests play a decisive role in assessing the reliability of laboratory test results. Interlaboratory tests performed over the last 10 years have examined different laboratory test methods. After analysing the results of these interlaboratory tests, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1. There is a need for improvement and validation for all laboratory test methods examined. 2. To avoid any discrepancy concerning the classification and labelling of chemicals, the use of validated laboratory test methods should be state of the art, with the results accompanied by the measurement uncertainty and (if applicable) the probability of incorrect classification. This paper addresses the probability of correct/incorrect classification (for example, as dangerous goods) on the basis of the measurement deviation obtained from interlaboratory tests performed by the Centre for quality assurance for testing of dangerous goods and hazardous substances (CEQAT-DGHS) to validate laboratory test methods. This paper outlines typical results (e.g. so-called “Shark profiles” – the probability of incorrect classification as a function of the true value estimated from interlaboratory test data) as well as general conclusions and steps to be taken to guarantee that laboratory test results are fit for purpose and of high quality. T1 - Evaluation of electric conductivity and mechanical load capacity of copper deposits for application in large winding components for electrical high-voltage machines made with cold spray additive manufacturing N2 - In line with the industrial trend of additive manufacturing, cold spray as a non-laser-based process is becoming increasingly important for many fields of application. For the evaluation of additive manufacturing of winding components made of copper for large electrical high-voltage machines, material and component properties such as electrical conductivity, mechanical load capacity and the component size that can be produced are of particular importance. In this context, the cold spray process offers advantages over laser-based additive manufacturing processes such as laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) or laser cladding by using the kinetic energy of the copper powder particles to generate particle cohesion. To investigate the electrical conductivity as well as the mechanical load capacity of cold spray parts, specimens were machined out of cold sprayed bulk copper deposits. The characteristic values were obtained with regard to the direction of deposition, which is defined by the direction of the robot’s movement. Thus, for the investigation of the component properties, specimens were provided that had been produced both longitudinally and transversely as well as orthogonally to the direction of deposition. The results of the investigations show that both the electrical conductivity and the mechanical load capacity of the specimen have a strong preferential direction of the specimen orientation with respect to the direction of deposition. Furthermore, it could be shown that by increasing the deposition height, there is an increasing oxygen content in the sample material, combined with increasingly significant defect networks. These effects have a negative impact on the electrical conductivity as well as on the mechanical load capacity. As a conclusion, further need for investigation is identified in the optimization of the process parameters as well as in the deposition strategy for the additive manufacturing of large-volume components with cold spray. Emissions were higher in EN 16105 laboratory tests than from vertically installed test specimens exposed to weathering, and slower for microencapsulated biocides. Competing processes that cause losses of active substances can occur in both tests, but to a higher degree in field experiments. Emission curves related to runoff water were similar in repeated field experiments. Relative humidity, temperature and global radiation were identified as meteorological factors that affect leaching by complex interaction besides the amount of driving rain. Um potentielle Gefahren während der Verladung zu minimieren, wird energieabsorbierender Dämpferbeton in den Handhabungsbereichen nuklearer Lager eingesetzt. Zu einer umfassenden sicherheitstechnischen Analyse und Bewertung gehört die Berücksichtigung des Beanspruchungsverhaltens von Dämpferbeton. Hierfür ist ein numerisches Materialmodell notwendig, das in der Literatur bisher nicht vorlag. Die dafür notwendigen dynamischen Kennwerte sind in verschiedenen Druck- und Eindringversuchen ermittelt worden. Dazu wurden dynamische Druckversuche an würfelförmigen Prüfkörpern durchgeführt, sowie Eindringversuche mit unterschiedlichen Eindringkörpern und Dämpferbetonproben. Die experimentell ermittelten Kennwerte wurden verwendet, um ein Materialmodell für Dämpferbeton zu entwickeln und kritische Beanspruchungsszenarien numerisch zu berechnen. Um die Qualität des Materialmodells zu überprüfen, wurde ein realitätsnaher Fallversuch eines Behälters in Originalgröße auf ein lagertypisches Dämpferbetonfundament durchgeführt. In dem Beitrag sollen die unterschiedlichen Untersuchungen zur Ermittlung dynamischer Kennwerte sowie deren Ergebnisse dargestellt werden. The water either exists as obvious free water or it may be bound physically or chemically, e.g. as pore water. A water driven gas generation could occur by vaporisation and by radiolysis. Steam as the result of vaporisation causes an increasing pressure inside a package and can affect corrosion. Vaporisation and condensation processes itself change the thermal behavior of the content especially during strongly unsteady thermal situations like accident fire situations. Radiolysis changes the chemical composition of the content which could cause an unexpected interaction, e.g. hydrogen embrittlement. Besides the pressure build-up the radiolysis of water generates hydrogen and oxygen, which can be highly flammable respectively explosive. The gas generation caused by vaporisation and radiolysis must be taken into account during the design and the safety assessment of a package. Pressure build-up, a changed thermal behavior and content chemistry, and especially the risk of accumulation of combustible gases exceeding the limiting concentration for flammability has to be considered in the safety assessment. Arable land of some hectares in size show a broad range of different nutrient compositions. Because of this heterogeneity wrong fertilization can occur and can cause environmental pollution or lead to smaller harvests and this is simply a waste of resources. The goal of I4S (intelligence for soil) is to develop an integrated system for site-specific soil fertility management. The I4S consortium consists of 10 different institutions, which are testing various sensors for their suitability for the requested applications. Besides the preparation of reference materials, the main task of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in this project is the method development for online-XRF (x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy) and for online-LIBS (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) sensor systems. Both methods have the advantage that there is no or only little sample preparation necessary. Each method provides a fast and simultaneous multi-element analysis. Both measurement setups can be utilized for a mobile application which is fundamental for reaching the goals of I4S. Having finally a set of some reference materials, further work will focus on the online-XRF and online-LIBS methods in order to obtain useable calibration models. The exposure of tanks to direct fire is a condition that potentially involves catastrophic consequences. Studying the behavior of the contained fluid under these drastic circumstances, is critical to develop methods and techniques to mitigate the serious consequences of many mishaps. In this paper, the experimental potentials of a Particle Image Velocimetry data acquisition system are described, for providing experimental data that could be used to calibrate mathematical models. As an example of the situations that need to be modelled, an experiment is described concerning the effect of the boundary conditions and protecting devices, on the rate of variation of pressure and temperature of the fluid in a tank exposed to a direct fire. In this regard, the results emphasize the importance of equipping the vessels with both thermal insulation and safety valves. According with the IAEA regulations “the bar shall be of solid mild steel of circular section, 15.0 ± 0.5 cm in diameter and 20 cm long, unless a longer bar would cause greater damage…”. The most damaging puncture bar length can be estimated by iterative processes in numerical simulations. On the one hand, a sufficient puncture bar length has to guarantee that shock absorbers or other attachments do not prevent or reduce the local load application to the package, on the other hand, a longer and thus less stiff bar causes a smaller maximum contact force. The contrary influence of increasing puncture bar length and increasing effective drop height shall be taken into account if a shock absorber is directly placed in the target area. The paper presents a numerical approach to identify the bar length that causes maximum damage to the package. Using the example of two typical package masses the sensitivity of contact forces and puncture bar deformations to the initial length are calculated and assessed with regard to the international IAEA package safety requirements. CT scans were done for complete samples, and 3D images of internal dissolution patterns were built. Each 3D image consists of submillimeter-size voxels to capture fine details of individual wormholes. The obtained 3D images of acidized blocks allow us to observe from various angles the details of the wormholes obtained in the three experiments, which demonstrated wide pore-volume-to-breakthrough (PVBT) range with three different injection rates. Also, variation of the CT number reveals the presence of depositional layers in all block samples, and the obtained CT images were used to interpret the effect that rock layers might have on wormhole penetration at different injection rates. Further, the built voxel models were used to calculate the radial distributions of dissolved rock volume, which otherwise are not obvious for such complex branched structures as wormholes. We observed how varied experimental conditions affected those distributions. The radial distributions were found very similar across the samples, which suggested the way to detect the effective wormhole penetration depth. T1 - Application of Elastic Reverse Time Migration to Ultrasonic Echo Data in Civil Engineering N2 - To improve ultrasonic imaging of concrete structures, we transferred a seismic migration technique, the Reverse Time Migration (RTM), to non-destructive testing. A 2D elastic RTM algorithm was tested on synthetic ultrasonic echo data. Compared to the typically used synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) as well as our acoustic RTM algorithm, the presented elastic RTM results show an enhancement in imaging vertical reflectors and complex features inside the 2D numerical concrete model. Conversely, during the operational phase, the combined influence of ground motion and moving loads from vehicles can significantly impact the structural health monitoring (SHM) of bridges. This study aims to evaluate the simultaneous effect of vertical earthquake vibrations and moving vehicle loads on simply supported bridges. The research employs a practical methodology based on the eigenfunction expansion method to analyze change of deflection due to the effect of these concurrent forces under seven different earthquake records. It is shown that within a realistic range of vehicle mass and velocity, the average of changing the maximum deflection at the mid-span of the main beam (denoted as M_n) reaches up to 163% under various scenarios. Subsequently, the seismic parameters influencing this phenomenon are identified through a statistical analysis of set of 100 different earthquake records with unique features. A linear regression equation is presented to predict the M_n based on the earthquake specific properties. Additionally, to control the vertical vibration of bridge systems, a novel vibration suppression system utilizing steel pipe dampers is introduced, and its reliability is examined across a broad spectrum of bridge flexural rigidity. The results indicate that the system's efficiency depends on M_n and the soil type of the bridge construction, enabling a reduction in structural sections (up to 27%) while achieving the same maximum target deflection in the initial state. This efficiency leads to a more economical design solution, emphasizing the potential benefits of the proposed system for practical application. Die Gesamthöhe dieser Schichten umfasst in der Regel maximal 10 cm. Inhaltsstoffe können durch Regenwasser mobilisiert und mit dem Sickerwasser in den Boden und in das Grundwasser eingetragen werden. Durch eine Kombination von Elutionstests und numerischer Modellierung kann das Mobilisierungs- und Transportpotential ermittelt werden, um eine Boden- und Grundwassergefährdungsabschätzung auf Basis einer Sickerwasserprognose vorzunehmen. Für visuelle ZfP-Techniken, wie die in dieser Studie verwendete Risslumineszenz-Methode, ist die Automatisierung der Fehlererkennung durch KI-gestützte Computer-Vision-Systeme ein logischer nächster Schritt. Findet dies als kontinuierliche Überwachung statt, entwickeln sich solche Systeme zu einer KI-gestützten SHM-Methode. Die Implementierung dieser Technologien in sicherheitskritischen Anwendungen erfordert jedoch einen robusten Nachweis ihrer Zuverlässigkeit, der durch diese Weiterentwicklung an Komplexität gewinnt. Während etablierte Standards für Probability of Detection (POD)-Studien in ZfP-Systemen existieren, fehlen entsprechende Normen für SHM-Systeme, insbesondere solche, die KI einsetzen. Obwohl statistische Methoden für SHM-Systeme verfügbar sind, um Datenabhängigkeiten zu berücksichtigen, ist ein ganzheitlicher POD-Ansatz notwendig, um beeinflussende und variable Störfaktoren umfassend zu adressieren und die Alterung des SHM-Systems zu berücksichtigen. Diese Arbeit demonstriert Fortschritte bei der Entwicklung einer maßgeschneiderten Methodik, die auf die spezifischen Anforderungen zugeschnitten ist, um die Zuverlässigkeit eines KI-gestützten SHM-Systems auf Basis der Risslumineszenz nachzuweisen. Dabei bleiben Prozessrückstände wie Deinkingschlämme, Sortierrückstände und Faserreststoffe übrig. Zusammengefasst als Papierschlamm verwerten die Recycler diesen Reststoff thermisch in dezentralen Heizkraftwerken. Die dabei anfallende Papierasche hat mit den Anteilen der Hauptoxide von 59 M.-% CaO, 22 M.-% SiO2 und 13 M.-% Al2O3 eine ähnliche chemische Zusammensetzung wie Portlandzement, wobei sich die Mineralphasen unterscheiden. Durch eine Aktivierung der Papierasche können jedoch hydraulisch aktive Phasen wie Mayenit (C7A12) und Belit (C2S) erzeugt werden. Die Mineralphase Mayenit reagiert schnell mit Wasser zu Calciumaluminathydraten, wodurch der Bindemittelleim schnell ansteift. Die festigkeitsbildenden Calciumsilicathydrate (CSH) in Bindemittelleimen entstehen bei einer späteren Reaktion von Belit mit Wasser. Zur Aktivierung dient eine hydrothermale Calcinierung. Dabei wird Papierasche mit einer Aktivatorlösung (Wasser oder KOH) gemischt und bei 200 °C hydrothermal behandelt, wobei sich Hydratphasen ausbilden. Diese Zwischenprodukte dehydratisieren durch eine anschließende Calcinierung zu reaktiven Calciumsilicaten und Calciumaluminaten. Wie sich die Parameter des Aktivierungsprozesses auf die Mineralphasen auswirken, war Fokus der Untersuchungen. Mit thermogravimetrischen Analysen der Zwischenprodukte konnten die Reaktionsprodukte nach dem hydrothermalen Prozessschritt bestimmt werden. Den größten Einfluss auf den Mineralphasenbestand hat hierbei die Alkalität der Aktivatorlösung. Im zweiten Prozessschritt, der Calcinierung, ist die Temperatur der wesentliche Faktor für die Ausbildung reaktiver Phasen. Die Ergebnisse kalorimetrischer Untersuchungen an Leimen aus den calcinierten Proben dienten der Auswahl der optimalen Calcinierungstemperatur. Die gesamte Reaktionswärme war für die Proben, welche bei einer Calcinierungstemperatur zwischen 700-800 °C hergestellt wurden, am höchsten. They are promising candidates to obtain enhanced image contrast from weakly absorbing micro and nano structures. They are based on X-ray refraction and near-field diffraction using the Talbot effect. At the expense of taking multiple images, Talbot-Lau grating interferometry allows separating the absorption, refraction, and scattering contributions by analysing the disturbances of a phase grating interference pattern. Contrary to other refraction enhanced methods, this technique can be applied using conventional X-ray tubes (divergent, polychromatic source). This makes it attractive to solve typical non-destructive testing problems. We investigated the efficiency of phase gratings, i.e. the visibility (the amplitude of oscillations) upon variation of propagation distance and phase grating rotation around an axis parallel to the grid lines. This grating rotation changes the grating shape (i.e. the distributions of phase shifts). This can yield higher visibilities than derived from rectangular shapes. Our study includes experimental results obtained from synchrotron radiation, as well as simulations for monochromatic radiation. BAM is involved in most of the cask licensing procedures and is responsible for the evaluation of cask-related long-term safety issues. Elastomeric seals are widely used as barrier seals for containers for low and intermediate level radioactive waste. In addition they are also used as auxiliary seals in spent fuel storage and transportation casks (dual purpose casks (DPC)). To address the complex requirements resulting from the described applications, BAM has initiated several test programs for investigating the behavior of elastomeric seals. These include experiments concerning the hyperelastic and viscoelastic behavior at different temperatures and strain rates, the low temperature performance down to -40°C, the influence of gamma irradiation and the aging behavior. The first part of the paper gives an overview of these tests, their relevant results and their possible impact on BAM’s work as a consultant in the framework of approval and licensing procedures. For the variability of its physical properties it is still an engineering challenge to meet all necessary requirements for the prediction of dynamic effects under impact loading. In this paper, investigations are shown within the scope of quantifying and evaluating the damage caused by an impact. The experimental investigations are performed in the field of low- and medium-velocity impact. The chosen flat nose shape results in small penetrations on the top side and scabbing on the bottom side. The plate is scanned with an adapted planar tomographic examination after the impact, and the damage is analysed, afterwards. Cracks and spalling are made visible with a reconstruction. The numerical model validated on the tomographic results justifies the application for further predictions of the damage description. T1 - Machine learning assisted characterization of a Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic (LTCC) module measured by synchrotron computed tomography N2 - The 5G technology promises real time data transmission for industrial processes, autonomous driving, virtual and augmented reality, E-health applications and many more. The Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics (LTCC) technology is well suited for the manufacturing of microelectronic components for such applications. Still, improvement of the technology such as further miniaturization is required. This study focuses on the characterization of inner metallization of LTCC multilayer modules, especially on the vertical interconnect access (VIA). Critical considerations for this characterization are delamination, pore clustering in and at the edge of the VIA, deformation, and stacking offset. A LTCC multilayer consisting of a glassy crystalline matrix with silver based VIAs was investigated by synchrotron x-ray tomography (CT). The aim of this study is to propose a multitude of structural characteristic values to maximize the information gained from the available dataset. Data analysis has been done with the open source software ImageJ as well as several additional plugins. The high-resolution CT data was evaluated through 2D slices for accessibility reasons. The segmentation of all 2000 slices to assess the different regions e.g. pores, silver and glass ceramic was done by a supervised machine learning algorithm. A quantitative evaluation of shape, deformation, and porosity of the VIA with respect to its dimensions is presented and the suitability of the characterization approach is assessed. T2 - 54. T1 - Analyse von Humboldt Codices aus Mizquiahuala im Vergleich zu Fragmenten in Mexiko und Paris N2 - Unter den von Humboldt in Amerika erworbenen Schriftstücken der Kolonialzeit findet sich eine Tributliste aus dem Jahr 1569, die der Otomí Bevölkerung aus dem Ort Mizquahuala im Staat Hidalgo/ Mexiko zugeordnet wird. Sie ist in Form eines Kalenders ausgeführt, Wochentage und verschiedene Produkte lassen sich unterscheiden. Eduard Seler beschreibt dieses Manuskript zusammen mit einer weiteren Tributliste, die in Inhalt und Zeichnung anders gestaltet ist, jedoch ebenfalls aus dieser Region stammt. Mit den für die Analyse von Manuskripten bewährten Untersuchungsmethoden werden Papier und Farbmittel identifiziert. Hierzu zählen Raman-, FTIR-, Röntgenfluoreszenz- und VIS- Spektroskopie. Charakteristisch für die Herstellung von schriftlichen Dokumenten in der Kolonialzeit von Amerika ist die Verwendung von indigenem Material wie Papier aus Baumrinde und Pflanzenfarben zusammen mit den aus Europa bekannten Materialien. Geklärt wird, welche Auswahl von Farbstoffen zur Herstellung der Dokumente genutzt wurde, die diese als Gruppe klassifizieren könnte. Die den beiden Fragmenten zugeordneten Farbmaterialien sowie formale und inhaltliche Aspekte lassen vermuten, dass zwei weitere Schriftstücke der Berliner Sammlung `Manuscripta Americana´, deren Herkunft nicht bekannt ist, mit ihnen in Beziehung gebracht werden können. Stilistisch gleiche Fragmente befinden sich zudem in Mexiko, Paris und den USA. Im Vergleich dieser Fragmente untereinander wird diskutiert, inwieweit die über die Materialanalyse identifizierten spezifischen Farbstoffe einen Hinweis auf eine gemeinsame lokale Herkunft zulassen. T1 - Effect of the Time Dependent Loading of Type IV Cylinders Using a Multiscale Model N2 - The Reduced Volume Method (RVM) has been used to evaluate the multiscale fibre break model developed at Mines ParisTech. It allows the model to be assigned only at certain part of the structures without necessarily compromising the final prediction. An attempt to model a simple unidirectional composite structure has also been carried out and gave a satisfying result. This paper deals with the application of the RVM to real scale type IV composite cylinders, where its stacking sequence was evaluated through micro-CT scans conducted with the collaboration of the University of Southampton. Two modelling geometries were evaluated and compared with the corresponding experimental results. T1 - The effects of SHM system parameters on the value of damage detection information N2 - This paper addresses how the value of damage detection Information depends on key Parameters of the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system including number of sensors and sensor locations. The Damage Detection System (DDS) provides the information by comparing ambient vibration measurements of a (healthy) reference state with measurements of the current structural system. The performance of DDS method depends on the physical measurement properties such as the number of sensors, sensor positions, measuring length and sensor type, measurement noise, ambient excitation and sampling frequency, as well as on the data processing algorithm including the chosen type I error for the indication threshold. The quantification of the value of Information (VoI) is an expected utility based Bayesian decision analysis method for quantifying the difference of the expected economic benefits with and without information. The (pre-)posterior probability is computed utilizing the Bayesian updating theorem for all possible indications. If changing any key parameters of DDS, the updated probability of system failure given damage detection information will be varied due to different indication of probability of damage, which will result in changes of value of damage detection information. The DDS system is applied in a statically determinate Pratt truss bridge girder. Through the analysis of the value of information with different SHM system characteristics, the settings of DDS can be optimized for minimum expected costs and risks before implementation. A1 - Kühne, Hans-Carsten T1 - Investigations on one-part geopolymers synthesized from different silica sources N2 - One-part geopolymers, synthesized from three different silica sources and sodium aluminate, were investigated regarding their microstructure and the evolution of their compressive strength on curing at slightly elevated temperatures. The effect of thermal treatment was studied up to 1000 °C and for the investigation of the chemical durability specific samples were treated with sulfuric acid (H2SO4, pH = 1). Depending on the silica feedstock, different degrees of reaction were observed. One of the silicas had a significantly higher reactivity. For two of the silicas, significant amounts of zeolites occurred as reaction products besides geopolymeric gel, whereas the more reactive silica source lead to the formation of a rather fully condensed geopolymeric network. The composites indicated promising behavior on heating in so far as no distinct shrinkage step occurred in the temperature range of dehydration. Up to 400 °C the residual strength of those mixes increased. Above 800 °C the samples underwent new phase formation. After exposure to sulfuric acid (pH 1; 70 d) specimens showed a residual compressive strength of about 77 % of the reference, indicating high acid resistance. Voraussetzung für die Durchschlagfestigkeit ist ein geringer Wasserdampfgehalt. Viele aktuelle Feuchtigkeitssensoren zeigen jedoch eine Querempfindlichkeit gegenüber CO2. Diese Richtlinienarbeit zielt darauf ab, den aktuellen Stand der Technik zu erweitern und neue Erkenntnisse zu gewinnen.
