Moreover, the focus has shifted from fundamental research towards expanding the applicability of graphene-related 2D materials (GR2M) and to improve their competitiveness with established materials [2]. Significant advances have been made especially in applications regarding optoelectronics, energy storage materials, chemical additives, sensor applications etc. [3]. Composite products containing graphene and functionalized graphene such as inks and dyes have shown enhanced performance regarding longevity, wettability, and can be tailored for specific purposes through dedicated functionalization. For accurate physico-chemical characterization, GR2M products in their raw form or as part of composites present challenges in terms of sample preparation, choice of analytical method and evaluation of data. For instance, in the context of imaging, these challenges encompass: (a) the selection of images magnifications being representative for all the flakes ranging in size from hundreds of nanometers to micrometers; (b) the selection of representative flakes for adequate statistics, which may involve the separation of overlapping/agglomerating flakes by segmentation; and (c) the classification of diverse morphologies such as irregularly shaped/crumpled flakes, porous flakes and particulate features present in the sample. The complexity of the analytical task has needed the introduction of specific ontology for 2D materials to identify the proper descriptors characterizing confidently the morphological features of interest. Regarding light scattering techniques such as Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Multi-Angle Light Scattering (MALS) commonly used for process control in industry as a first measure, an alternative approach would be necessary. This is in part due to the use of the standard sphere-model for 2D materials as appearing to be inappropriate, whilst a disc-shape model potentially yields more suitable results. Standardization efforts are underway to establish a baseline for accurate characterization of aimed measurands with sufficient statistics. To date, the measurement methods recommended by standardization bodies for the morphological-structural characterization of GR2M’s are AFM, Raman Spectroscopy and SEM and/or TEM. The acquisition of statistically relevant numbers of flakes for a thorough characterization using TEM and AFM is particularly time-consuming. The size distribution of graphene oxide- and graphene-containing inks was investigated by using a correlative approach coupling Centrifugal Field-Flow Fractionation (CF3) [4] with MALS. Up to now, promising results for Field-Flow Fractionation have been achieved only with respect to the separation into size classes of GO samples as well as of graphene oxide mixed with graphene by Asymmetrical Field-Flow Fractionation (AF4) [5], [6]. Besides the online characterization by MALS, the eluting size fractions obtained by CF3 were also collected and subsequently measured by SEM. Successful separation into size fractions allows us to apply ensemble techniques such as MALS to samples that were previously not measurable according to best-practices. In this study, the following material sub-classes have been observed with SEM: (i) nano-graphite mixed with graphene flakes, (ii) graphene oxide few- and multi-layer flakes with diverse and highly complex morphology, and (iii) graphene oxide of well-defined size and shape with >95% single- and bilayer content were investigated. Data on the class size ranges was obtained by MALS after separation with CF3 and consideration of a disc-shape model. Significant effort was invested into the sample preparation for CF3 measurements to achieve a recovery rate of >80%, well above the recommended 70% by ISO/TS 21362:2018 for validation purposes. The material fractions collected after the CF3 measurement were separately deposited on a silicon wafer and the size results of the SEM analysis were correlated with the corresponding mean sizes obtained with MALS. The focus is on the AlCoCrFeNiTi alloy [3-5], synthesized by directional solidification, known for its exceptional strength and unique properties. Experimental investigations, including compression, and bending creep tests, were conducted at 750°C. Capitalizing on the inhomogeneous stress and strain distribution within a cantilever subjected to bending, we leverage this characteristic to extract multiple creep curves from a single test. Stresses at key points were determined using existing analytical solutions [5,6]. Uniaxial tests spanning 300 to 500 MPa initial stress were complemented by bending tests designed to induce similar stress levels. A detailed comparison between bending and uniaxial creep is presented, including the results of verification studies on additional alloys. This methodology not only expedites testing but also minimizes material usage, energy consumption, and manual labour. This research showcases a reliable and time-efficient approach to exploring the creep behavior of high-temperature materials. The technique is particularly advantageous for characterizing precious alloys with limited dimensions. Microstructural heterogeneity may exist in specimens tested under bending load, however, it can still be correlated to the mechanical properties with modern high-resolution characterization methods. Stress and resulting strain can be directly compared in a single specimen, ensuring uniform manufacturing, and heating history. This method eliminates the possible errors due to testing with different rigs, which could impair the accuracy of studies based on individual tests. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde eine Charakterisierung des Ermüdungsverhaltens von additiv gefertigten TiAl6V4 im Low-Cycle-Fatigue Bereich (niederzyklische Ermüdung) nach Norm ISO 12206 mit Dehnungsamplituden von 0.3 bis zu 1.0 % und bei Raumtemperatur, 250°C und 400°C durchgeführt. Die TiAl6V4 Proben wurden aus zylindrischen Halbzeugen gefertigt, welche durch Laser-Pulver-Auftragsschweißen mit einer optimierten Aufbaustrategie hergestellt wurden. Die optimierte Aufbaustrategie beinhaltet variierende Spurüberlappungsgraden, die die Fertigung der dünnen zylindrischen Körper ohne weitere Ausgleichslagen ermöglicht. Das Werkstoffverhalten wird anhand von Wechselverformungskurven sowie einer Darstellung der Lebensdauer in einem Wöhler-Diagramm beschrieben. Ein Fitting der Lebensdauer-Daten erfolgt anhand der Manson-Coffin-Basquin Beziehung. Eine Eingangscharakterisierung der mikrostrukturellen Merkmale inklusive Bindefehler aus dem Herstellungsprozess wird durch Lichtmikroskopie und hochauflösende Computertomographie (CT) durchgeführt. Der Versagensmechanismus während der Belastung wird anhand von Zwischenuntersuchungen mit CT und einem unterbrochenen Versuch mit ausgewählten Versuchsparametern beschrieben. Nach dem Versagen wurden die Proben am REM, mit Lichtmikroskopie und mit CT fraktographisch in Längs- und Querrichtung untersucht. Die erfassten Lebensdauern sind ähnlich zu denen aus herkömmlichen Studien und liegen unter derjenigen von dem konventionell hergestellten (geschmiedeten) Werkstoff. In dieser Arbeit wurden für den untersuchten Werkstoff bei anwendungs- und sicherheitsrelevanten Belastungszuständen (hohe Temperaturen, zyklische Plastizität) neue experimentelle Daten und Kennwerte ermittelt und Verständnis über das mechanische Verhalten und die Entwicklung der Mikrostruktur aufgebaut. Further chemical functionalization can enhance but also alter or reduce specific properties of the graphene. To reveal the nature of these materials a proper physico‑chemical characterization with different analytical techniques is crucial. Single-layer GO flakes provided by Graphenea (Spain) were prepared for systematic image analysis. These flakes were disposed on an alignment-marked SiO2 substrate and correlatively imaged by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and Raman spectroscopy. The high lateral resolution and/ or extreme surface sensitivity of the mentioned techniques is necessary to explore monolayers. The ToF-SIMS images match well with the SEM and AFM images and provide information about the chemistry. With 2D Raman spectroscopy it is possible to differentiate between the number of stacked single-layer flakes. This is visualized in a 3D image. Well-defined GO flakes could be used as a reference material for imaging of graphene-like structures but also of other types of 2D materials. In addition to these monolayer GO flakes, commercial graphene-containing inks (Haydale) with a more complex morphology were also correlatively imaged. ToF-SIMS and SEM images were merged to identify the origin of different chemical fragments. The findings correlate closely with the expectation that the specific functionalizations (with fluorine and nitrogen as marker elements) are present only on the graphene flakes as presumed from the SEM images. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) supports these results, yet with a much lower sensitivity compared to ToF-SIMS. The reliable quantification of the composition of graphene-related 2D materials as liquid suspensions is still a challenging task, which can hinder the commercialisation of the products. Specific parameters to be measured are defined, e.g. the oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) concentration ratio, the trace metal impurities, or the functional groups present [1], but reference protocols are still missing. One of the central methods for the quantification is X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as a rather expensive method. Therefore, the development of cheaper alternatives is highly desired. One attractive alternative of XPS is energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) which is usually coupled with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This combination is one of the most widely used methods in analytical laboratories. In this contribution the results of a systematic study on the capability of SEM/EDS to reliably quantify the O/C ratio in a well-defined and well-characterized graphene oxide material [2] are presented. The robustness of the SEM/EDS results obtained at various measurement conditions (various excitation energies) is tested by comparing the results to the established XPS analysis [3], which has been carried out on the same samples. It is demonstrated that for samples prepared by drop-casting on a substrate, both surface-sensitive XPS analysis and bulk-characterising EDS result in very similar elemental composition of oxygen and carbon for thick spots. Further, the effect of untight deposited material enabling co-analysis of the (silicon) substrate, is evaluated for both methods, XPS and EDS. The last results clearly show the influence of the substrate on the analysis of the results and stressed out the importance of the sample preparation. It was agreed to organize at a later stage a second inter-lab comparison with the nanoparticles distributed to the participants as a liquid suspension. Protocols for uniform nanoparticle deposition on suited supports developed and optimized within the EMPIR nPSize project are also prepared to be distributed. For this, we have chosen the VAMAS platform (www.vamas.org) which offers an excellent international infrastructure of laboratories with high competence in nanoparticle measurement. The VAMAS technical working area dedicated to nanoparticle measurement is TWA 34 ‘Nanoparticle populations’. For this type of nanoparticles, the size and shape distributions are the primary parameters to be reported. Due to the good deposition protocols developed, an automated image analysis is enabled (in contrast to the manual analysis of irregular TiO2 nanoparticles. In parallel with the TiO2 nanoparticle exercise, two spherical SiO2 nanoparticle samples with bi-modal size distributions (nominal relative number concentrations of 1:1 and 10:1) are prepared for a second VAMAS inter-lab comparison. Here, the nanoparticle concentration is the primary parameter to be measured. For the imaging methods it is targeted to measure the relative nanoparticle concentrations of the two modes. For the absolute nanoparticle concentration to be measured by imaging methods it is necessary to control the volume of the liquid suspension deposited on the substrate and to obtain such a homogeneous nanoparticle deposition on the substrate which allows to count (or extrapolate) all the deposited particles. Defence strategies against such harmful threats led to a variety of molecular mechanisms, ecological shifts, and genetic innovations. Gene families underlying the molecular basis of the immune responses have evolved within the boundaries given by the species ecology. Here, we explore the evolution of some emblematic immune gene families throughout the Insecta phylum shedding light on remarkable genetic events such as gene duplication or gene loss. We followed a workflow based on the Hidden Markov model to search for immune genes in 55 high-quality genomes of insects. We highlight the emergence of group defence in social species as an ecological shift that released selection pressure on immune gene families notably in Blattodea. Further, we draw attention to certain gene families and the link between their diversity and the specificities of the species’ microbiota. Overall, we report data on immune gene diversity in insects. We sought to address this by sequencing near-chromosome-quality genomes from the major solitary, subsocial and social lineages of termites and their nearest blattodean relatives. We present findings from a comparative analysis of the sequenced genomes, where we explore the molecular underpinnings of termite sociality, and seek to understand the evolutionary origins of termite castes. At a broader scale, we test the extent to which a two-step process involving an initial expansion of genomic elements in cockroaches followed by extensive genome rearrangements in termites, may have acted as an important mechanism of evolutionary change. We then ask whether specific genomic processes may have facilitated evolutionary novelty, for example, through the analysis of transposon-host gene associations across the social gradient. We also report on findings that combine genomes with brain transcriptomics to explore the mechanistic basis of termite phenotypic plasticity, thereby enabling a first large-scale comparative genomic analysis of the evolutionary origins of termite sociality. We sought to underpine the complexity of this evolutionary transition at the transcriptomic level. We present the gene co-expression network analysis of 305 RNA-seq samples from the brains of 15 species of cockroaches and termites from different instars and castes. With this dataset, we investigate how the network of gene evolved between solitary cockroaches, sub-social cockroach and eusocial termites. Moreover, we investigate the emergence of the two most striking evolutionary innovations in termites, the appearance of the soldier caste, common in nearly all termites and thought to have evolved once and subsequently lost in some species, and the true worker caste, the sterile workforce of the colony thought to have derived from the totipotent false worker caste in four different lineages of termites independently. However, graphene has not been yet implemented into the industrial market, in particularly due to the difficulty of properly characterizing this challenging material. As most of other nanomaterials, graphene’s properties are closely linked to its chemical and structural properties, such as number of layers, flake thickness, degree of functionalisation and C/O ratio. For the commercialization, suitable procedures for the measurement and characterization of the ultrathin flakes, of lateral dimensions in the range from µm to tens of µm, are essential.Surface chemical methods, especially XPS, have an outstanding role of providing chemical information on the composition. Thereby, one well-known problem for surface analytical methods is the influence of contamination on the composition as in the case of adventitious carbon. The differentiation between carbon originated from the contamination or from the graphene sample itself is often not obvious, which can lead to altered results in the determination of the composition. To overcome this problem, Hard Energy X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES) offers new possibilities due to its higher information depth. Therefore, XPS measurement obtained with Al Kα radiation (E = 1486. 6 eV) were compared with analyses performed with a Cr Kα (E = 5414. 8 eV) excitation on functionalized graphene samples. Differences are discussed in terms of potential carbon contamination, but also of oxygen on the composition of the samples. Measurements are performed on O-, N- and F-functionalized graphene. Different preparation procedures (powder, pellet, drop cast from liquid suspension) will be also discussed, correlation of the results with the flakes morphology as well as their validation with other independent methods are in progress. In this work, the evolution of various types of laser-induced micro- and nanostructures emerging on titanium or titanium alloys upon irradiation by near-infrared ultrashort laser pulses (925 fs, 1030 nm) in air environment is studied for various laser fluence levels, effective number of pulses and at different pulse repetition rates (1 – 400 kHz). The morphologies of the processed surfaces were systematically characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy (OM, SEM). Complementary white-light interference microscopy (WLIM) revealed the corresponding surface topographies. Chemical and structural changes were analysed through depth-profiling time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The results point towards a remarkable influence of the laser processing parameters on the surface topography, while simultaneously altering the near-surface chemistry via laser-induced oxidation effects. Consequences for medical applications are outlined. The alloy PBF-LB/M/316L features a fully austenitic microstructure with hierarchical characteristics— such as fine dislocation structures, segregated elements, low-angle grain boundaries, and nano-dispersed silicates—that enhance strength and ductility. Additionally, it includes metallurgical defects and residual stresses. Apart from process control, heat treatments (HTs) are used to tailor the microstructure for specific loading conditions. This study investigate the effects of post-processing HTs on the hierarchical microstructure and tensile properties of PBF-LB/M/316L at room and high temperature. The heat treatments, ranging from 400 °C to 900 °C for 1 to 4 hours, focus on sub-recrystallization temperatures to preserve the microstructural hierarchy. The HTs applied had minimal impact on the grain shape, size, or texture of PBF-LB/M/316L. However, significant modifications occurred in the solidification cellular substructure after HTs at 800 °C and 900 °C, when compared to a heat-treated condition at 450 °C. HTs at 800 °C notably decreased dislocation density and enlarged cellular structures, though they remained partially intact. After 1 hour at 900 °C, the cellular substructure dissipated, correlating with a further reduction in dislocation density. These microstructural changes resulted in a decreased yield strength and increased work hardening capacity at both room and high temperature, highlighting the critical link between HT parameters, microstructural evolution, and mechanical performance. Prinzipiell können diese Verfahren in zwei Gruppen eingeteilt werden - die statischen und die dynamischen Prüfverfahren. The storage licenses were granted for up to 40 years. Due to the delay in identifying a final repository site for such radioactive waste, the storage periods are to be extended significantly. The objective of our research work is to collect additional material data for metal seals in order to be able to better assess the long-term safety of the sealing system of the casks for a period of up to 100 years. A principal safety consideration for the DPCs is the long-term performance of bolted lid sealing systems utilizing metal seals to ensure the safe enclosure of the radioactive inventory during interim storage. To assess the sealing behavior, it is necessary to examine the aging-dependent residual restoring force for the metal seals and the usable resilience. By investigating the change in these values as a function of time and temperature, further insight can be gained into the assessment of long-term safety for extended interim storage. In the present study, the restoring force of metal seals with an outer aluminum jacket and a torus diameter of 9.9 mm was measured continuously. For this purpose, a specially designed device equipped with a load cell was used under isothermal conditions. As part of the investigation, the level and rate of decrease of the restoring seal force were recorded over test periods of one and two months. The seal temperature was set to 35 °C, 75 °C, 100 °C, 125 °C, and 150 °C, respectively. A direct correlation was observed between the temperature of the seal, the level of the restoring force after compressing and heating the seal, and the drop-off characteristics of the restoring force. It was found that in our test device the force level immediately after reaching the respective temperature is lower for higher seal temperatures, while the drop rate of the restoring force is higher. This paper describes the experimental setting and discusses first results in comparison with our long-term discontinuous measurements. Strain controlled push/pull tests were performed between room temperature and 600 °C. The PBF‑LB/M/316L exhibits an initial cyclic hardening, followed by a cyclic softening. The grade of softening decreases (i) with increasing test temperature and (ii) after a partial dissolution of its dislocation substructure through heat treatment. The deformation behavior and its dependency on test temperature and heat-treated/microstructural condition are attributed to the slip character and related changes. With either a partially dissolved dislocation substructure or increasing test temperature the material exhibits typical wavy slip characteristics. In the opposite case, the deformation mechanism seems to be rather planar dislocation slip as the formation of slip planes spanning through entire grains was observed, seemingly acting as pathways of easy dislocation movement. The scope of the material preparation work is the thermal reduction of residual fluorides from HF (capping agent) induced during the synthesis of TiO2 nanosheets by calcination at 873K. The analytical task consists of detection and localization of fluorine present at the surface and/or in the bulk of TiO2 nanosheets before and after calcination by SEM/EDX, Auger electron spectroscopy and ToF-SIMS.
