These impact limiters shall ensure that the transport casks meet the mechanical and thermal IAEA regulatory test requirements. According to the accident conditions of transport it is mandatory to expose the specimens to a cumulative effect by mechanical and thermal impacts. The mechanical tests consist of a free drop from 9 m onto a flat unyielding target and a 1 m drop onto a puncture bar. After damage caused by mechanical test sequences the package has to withstand a severe fire scenario. Corresponding to the IAEA advisory material it is required that the impact attitudes for the 9 m drop test and for the puncture test have to be such as to produce maximum damage, taking into account the thermal test. Moreover, any damage, which would give rise to increased radiation or loss of containment or affect the confinement system after the thermal test, should be considered. During and following the thermal test, the specimen shall not be artificially cooled and any combustion of materials of the package shall be permitted to proceed naturally. Different works from the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) and BAM show that additional energy supply from a pre-damaged impact limiter to the cask could occur. This effect should be considered within the safety assessment of the containment. Thermal effects at the closure system of the cask, which might result in an elevated activity release, have to be excluded. BAM conducted small scale tests with wood filled metal buckets showing continuing combustion processes during the cooling down phase. These test results are presented. As not much is known about smouldering processes in wood filled impact limiters, it is highly complex to define pre-damage of impact limiters, which are conservative, regarding the maximum damaging energy flow from the impact limiter to the containment system. More research has to be done to develop models to examine the effects of smouldering impact limiters on the containment of packages for the transport of radioactive material. Aspects of assessment and its difficulties are shown. BAM as a competent authority for the approval of transport casks for radioactive material in Germany operates the test facilities to examine the issue of mechanical damage, combustion and heat transfer for such kind of package systems. For this purpose the knowledge from real drop tests with casks of a mass partly over 100 tons was transferred to a test application. A thermal test will take place with a wood filled test specimen with a diameter of about 2.3 meters. The aim is to understand the phenomena of smouldering under the consideration of relevant regulatory boundary conditions. The process of smouldering is described with regard to the requirements in the thermal assessment of safety of packages for the transport of radioactive material. Requirements concerning the pre-damage of packages for the maximum damage of impact limiters are discussed. Parameters influencing the smouldering process are identified. N2 - In Deutschland fallen aktuell pro Jahr über 5 Mio. Tonnen Hausmüllverbrennungs-aschen (HMVA) an. Eine Verwertung dieser Aschen und Schlacken ist in Deutschland möglich und findet überwiegend im Deponiebau statt. Für die Verwertung sind in der Ersatzbaustoffverordnung Eluatgrenzwerte für Schwermetalle und einige andere Parameter vorgesehen. Der Umgang mit HMVA könnte durch eine Einstufung als gefährlicher Abfall erschwert werden. Maßgeblich für die Einstufung eines Abfalls als gefährlich oder ungefährlich sind die gefahrenrelevanten Eigenschaften HP 1 bis HP 15 nach Anhang III der Richtlinie 2008/98/EG über Abfälle mit dort festgelegten Konzentrationsgrenzen. Für HMVA ist im Wesentlichen nur der Parameter HP 14 (Ökotoxizität) von Bedeutung. Dafür sind entscheidend die Gehalte an chemischen Verbindungen mit den Gefahrenhinweiscodes (hazard statement code, HSC) H400, H410, H411, H412 und H413. Eine detaillierte Diskussion zu den übrigen Gefahreneigenschaften bei HMVA findet sich in der Literatur. Die Einstufung als gefährlicher Abfall erfolgt nach festgelegten Rechenregeln. Die BAM bearbeitet ein durch das UBA gefördertes Forschungsprojekt zur Erfassung und Bewertung von Analysedaten zu Aschen und Schlacken aus Abfallverbrennungsanlagen. Die Ergebnisse des Vorhabens sollen bei der Weiterentwicklung des vorhandenen Konzeptes für eine bundeseinheitlichen Untersuchung und abfallrechtlichen Einordnung von Aschen und Schlacken aus deutschen Abfallverbrennungsanlagen unterstützend herangezogen werden. In Deutschland wird die Rostasche durch Nassentschlackungssysteme aus dem Feuerraum ausgetragen. Durch den Kontakt mit Wasser setzen direkt hydraulische Reaktionen ein, die eine vollständige Abtrennung der Feinfraktion unmöglich machen. Das wurde bereits in den 1990er Jahren erkannt und führte zur Entwicklung des ABB InRec Verfahrens mit Trockenentaschung als ersten Verfahrensschritt. Auch damals war das Ziel eine möglichst inerte Rostasche für die Verwertung zu erzeugen. In den letzten Jahren wurden in der Schweiz Trockenentaschungssystem installiert, hier vor allem um die Rückgewinnung von elementaren Metallen auch in der Feinfraktion zu verbessern. Welche Potenziale sich dabei erschließen lassen, wurde in einem anderen UBA-Projekt untersucht. Im Rahmen unserer Arbeiten wurde versuchsweise trockene Rostasche an einer Anlage in Süddeutschland genommen und im Labor untersucht. Im Vortrag werden die Ergebnisse zum Auslaugverhalten und zur Gefahreneigenschaft HP14 (Ökotoxizität) vorgestellt. Es gibt Bemühungen, die Reststoffe kontrolliert bei Temperaturen zwischen 700 °C und 800 °C zu calcinieren, um dadurch direkt einen metakaolinhaltigen puzzolanisch wirkenden Zementbestandteil oder Betonzusatzstoff herzustellen. Üblicherweise erfolgt die Verbrennung der Papierreststoffe aber beim Papierrecycler bzw. –hersteller in dezentralen Heizkraftwerken, in denen mittels Kraft-Wärme-Kopplung Strom, Wärme und Dampf erzeugt werden. Der auf die Strom- und Wärmeerzeugung optimierte Prozess verläuft bei Temperaturen von 950°C bis 1000 °C. Dabei bilden sich aus dem amorphen Metakaolin bereits wieder inerte Verbindungen. Pro Tonne verbranntem Papierreststoff fallen etwa 240 kg Papierasche (PA) in Form einer Mischung aus Kessel- und Elektrofilteraschen an. Die Papierasche wird etwa zu 16 % in der Ziegelherstellung und zu 52 % in der Rohmehlproduktion der Zementindustrie kostenpflichtig entsorgt. Mit 26 % werden große Anteile der Papierasche deponiert. Mit den Zielen der Anhebung der Verwertungsquote der Papierasche, der Reduzierung der Entsorgungskosten und einer qualitativ höherwertigen Verwendung der Asche unter Ausnutzung ihrer spezifischen Eigenschaften, stehen Papieraschen im Mittelpunkt verschiedener Forschungsarbeiten. Die in den Untersuchungen verwendete Papierasche liegt als feinkörniges Material in einem breiten Kornband mit Partikelgrößen zwischen 0,5 µm und 100 µm vor. In Abhängigkeit von der Materialcharge beträgt die Feststoffdichte der Asche 2,63-2,67 g/cm³ und ihre spezifische Oberfläche liegt bei 2,6-5,0 m²/g. Die Papierasche kommt mit den Anteilen der Hauptoxide von 49-59 M.-% CaO, 22-28 M.-% SiO2 und 13-14 M.-% Al2O3 der Zusammensetzung eines Portlandzements nahe, sie ist jedoch etwas kalkärmer und tonerdereicher. In Abhängigkeit von der Herstellungs- und Lagerungshistorie enthält sie zwischen 3 M.-% und 15 M.-% Freikalk (CaO). Mittels Röntgenbeugungsanalyse werden Calcit (CaCO3), Gehlenit (Ca2Al(AlSi)O7), Portlandit (Ca(OH)2) und Belit (Ca2SiO4), Quarz (SiO2) und Talk Mg3Si4O10(OH)2 als Hauptmineralphasen der Papierasche identifiziert. In einigen PA-Chargen werden zusätzlich Freikalk (CaO), Tricalciumaluminat (Ca3Al2O6) und geringe amorphe Anteile gefunden. Aufgrund dieser Eigenschaften werden von der Papierasche auch hydraulische Eigenschaften erwartet, die eine Verwendung als Bindemittel allein oder Bindemittelkomponente im Gemisch mit Portlandzement oder anderen Zusatzstoffen nahe legen. Eine umfangreiche Studie befasste sich mit dem Einsatz von Papierasche als Bindemittel. Untersucht wurde die Mineralphasen- und Festigkeitsentwicklung nach einer Aktivierung mit Wasser oder 2 mol/l NaOH- bzw. KOH-Lösungen. In einer Arbeit zur Herstellung eines zementfreien reststoffbasierten Bindemittels wurde unter anderem die CaO-reiche Papierasche als Ausgangsmaterial ausgewählt. Durch eine hydrothermale Behandlung von PA-Wasser-Gemischen mit anschließender Calcinierung wird die Asche hydraulischen aktiviert. Dabei bildet sich als Zwischenprodukt Calciumsilcathydrat (CSH), das durch die nachfolgende Calcinierung zu hydraulisch aktivem Belit dehydratisiert. In einem anderen Anwendungspfad dient die Papierasche als alleiniger Ausgangsstoff oder als Kalklieferant im Gemisch Papierasche/Mauerwerkbruch zur Herstellung leichter Granulate mit Rohdichten von 1,5-2,0 g/cm³. Dabei erfolgt nach einer Granulierung des Ausgangsmehls eine Erhärtung in einem Autoklav bei 200 °C und 1,6 MPa in gesättigter Wasserdampfatmosphäre. Während des hydrothermalen Prozesses bilden sich CSH-Phasen, die die beim Granulieren vorgeprägte Mikrostruktur der Granulate weiter beeinflussen. Neben der Verwendung als leichte Gesteinskörnung wird auch eine Anwendung als Speicher-medium, Filtermaterial oder Adsorptions- bzw. Puffermittel getestet. Im Vortrag werden die wesentlichen Ergebnisse der Forschungsarbeiten vorgestellt und die Einsatzmöglichkeiten der Papierasche als Baustoff im Hinblick auf ihre technologische und nachhaltigkeitsbezogene Eignung bewertet. High accuracy ICP OES determination of 1 g/kg mercury solutions N2 - To establish the SI traceability of the element content w(Hg) of a gravimetrically prepared 1 g/kg mercury solution, the latter was compared to a primary reference solution by means of high accuracy inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) measurements. For this purpose, the ICP OES bracketing method previously described [1] was improved to yield a relative expanded uncertainty of the mercury element content of Urel(w(Hg)) = 0.5 % (with k = 2) associated with the comparison of two monoelemental solutions. In case of mercury, such a small uncertainty was achieved for the first time. Before, in general, such small uncertainties were only reported applying isotope dilution methods performed with MC-ICP-MS. However, for mercury solutions at this concentration range, several dilution steps are necessary to prepare the samples for ID-MC-ICP-MS. The sum of the uncertainty contributions stemming from the dilution steps, as well as the intrinsic difficulties of measuring mercury at low concentrations, result in an overall uncertainty of the ICP-MS measurements, which is comparable to or even larger than those, achieved with the ICP OES method applied. We will present details of the sample preparation as well as of the dedicated ICP OES measurement approach, which were crucial to achieve such a small measurement uncertainty. The newly developed method was successfully applied in the context of the development and production of elemental solution chemical reference standards (CRS), which are distributed by the EDQM. The CRS are intended to support measurements required by the European Pharmacopoeia, which has recently incorporated a new international guideline for the control of elemental impurities in medicinal products. With radiographic simulations, virtual component models can be scanned as in a computed-tomography scanner. In modern radiography, simulation has become an important tool to minimize cost- and time-intensive measurements. It is increasingly used to optimize techniques for complex applications, to support the method developments, and for educational purposes. With Artistlib, we have started the development of a programming interface to support use cases where the interactive use of the graphical user interface is not suitable. The open-source Python library is intended to remote control and automate the radiographic simulator aRTist. The computer program aRTist can generate synthetic radiographs from a virtual RT test set-up. In the field of industrial radiology simulation is used, e.g. to optimize techniques for complex applications, to support the preparation of written procedures, and for education purposes. The simulator aRTist combines analytical and Monte Carlo methods to efficiently model the radiation transport. The program comes with a graphical user interface written in Tcl/Tk. In combination of Tcl/Tk and the 3D capabilities of the visualization toolkit (VTK) a practical and convenient simulator has been realized. This will be illustrated by discussing application scenarios of classical radiography, X-ray computer tomography, and X-ray backscatter imaging. Additionally, some insight to the software implementation of the simulator will be given. The current conventional characterization and identification of pollen is performed by time-consuming microscopic examinations on the basis of the genus-specific pollen shape and size. These examinations are in need of proficient researchers, are not statistically validated, and additionally rely on relatively inaccurate observations of the pollination process. A variety of new analytical approaches have been proposed in order to develop a fast and reliable pollen identification using specific molecular information. Recently, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was initially applied for the rapid investigation of such complex biological samples. The combination of the obtained patterns of pollen mass spectra and multivariate statistics provide a powerful tool for identifying taxonomic relationships. Here promising results obtained by the reduction and optimization of sample preparation prior to MALDI-TOF MS mapping are presented. Based on a novel application of conductive carbon tape as target, the signal information of the species-specific mass peak patterns of pollen was enhanced. This leads to a clear separation in a subsequent pattern analysis, which is important when analyzing pollen grains in natural species mixtures. As a proof-of-concept, artificial pollen mixtures were investigated by MALDI imaging and evaluated by innovative multivariate data analysis strategies, to assign individual pollen species in the mixtures. Our results can be used to improve the taxonomic differentiation and identification of pollen species and might be useful for the development of a routine method to identify pollen based on mass spectrometry. The present study focused on plastic leachates of polystyrene (PS) and polylactic acid (PLA), which were derived from alternating stress by hydrolysis and UV radiation. Test specimen of PS, PLA or PS/PLA blends (each 50 %) were alternatingly maintained in water at 45 °C for five days and UV radiated at 45 °C for two days, for in total six weeks. Ecotoxicological effects of potentially generated degradation products of plastic materials in the storage water (mineral water, pH: 7.2) were detected by algae growth inhibition tests with Desmodesmus suspicatus and photosystem II inhibition tests with Raphidocelis subcapitata. Results clearly indicate inhibitory effects on algae growth by contaminants in the storage water of stressed plastic materials with increasing growth inhibition of proceeding hydrolysis and UV stress times. Here we train neural networks to use raw measurement data as input and immediately return the desired output parameters. We discuss the example of X-ray reflectivity measurements of ultrathin films, which contain reciprocal space information and must traditionally be fitted with dynamic scattering theory. Instead, we train the neural network with simulated X-ray data of multilayer structures and then apply it to measurement data. The neural network yields high accuracy results, is robust against noise, and performs significantly faster than fitting algorithms in real-time experiments. The presented neural network data analysis is becoming increasingly attractive, because free software has become very accessible and specialized computer chips (NPU) are currently being rolled out. This paper presents recent advances from two projects that use Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to address the challenges of automation and performance-efficient realizations of MS and NMR. In the first part, a complete toolchain has been developed to develop simulated spectra and train ANNs to identify compounds in MS. In the second part, a limited number of experimental NMR spectra have been augmented by simulated spectra to train an ANN with better prediction performance and speed than state-of-theart analysis. These results suggest that, in the context of the digital transformation of the process industry, we are now on the threshold of a possible strongly simplified use of MS and MRS and the accompanying data evaluation by machine-supported procedures, and can utilize both methods much wider for reaction and process monitoring or quality control. Therefore, many studies focus on investigations regarding their toxicological potential. This includes investigations concerning uptake, distribution and excretion of the particles. So far, little attention was paid to changes of physical and chemical properties in the human body. During processes like digestion, the question arises whether they can pass this barrier in a nanoscale form. In this study we analytically monitored the changes in the size distribution of colloidal silver during an artificial digestion process with the help of small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). Therefore, we synthesized polyacrylic acid stabilized ultra-small silver nanoparticles with a radius of 3 nm and a size distribution width of 18%. The artificial digestion process mimics the gastro-intestinal passage and simulates the oral, gastric and small intestinal conditions. Additionally, food components like oil, starch, glucose and skimmed milk powder are used to provide a preferably realistic environment. In absence of any food components the low pH initiates aggregation of the particles in the stomach. However, the particles unexpectedly stabilize in a defined cluster form with a mean radius of 12 nm. By the use of the food components oil and starch we observed that the particles are dispersed again. Now we found a bimodal size distribution of primary particles and aggregates. In contrast to that, with skimmed milk powder only a slight aggregation occurs in the stomach. In the gastric tract the particle distribution is stabilized at a mean volume weighted radius of 5 nm. Hence, skimmed milk powder acts as a colloidal stabilizer. For comparison we also used silver nitrate as a control substance. Surprisingly, we observed a formation of nanoparticles already in the saliva. During the digestion process the distribution narrows and finally in the intestine it shows a stable distribution with a mean volume weighted radius of 3 nm and a small fraction of aggregates. These results indicate that the silver nanoparticles can pass the digestion process in a nanoscale form but undergo a transformation in the size distribution. However, even from pure silver nitrate nanoparticle formation can be observed. This sketches a complex mechanism in which not only food components but also silver ions cause changes in nanoparticle size and aggregation. T1 - Artificial digestion of aluminium-containing nanomaterials and their effects on the gastrointestinal tract in vitro N2 - Although aluminium is one of the most common elements in the biosphere, up to now little is known about its impact on human health. aluminium and its chemical derivatives are highly abundant in food, food contact materials and consumer products. Humans are exposed to aluminium via the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract). Exposition can change substantially due to consumer behavior since aluminium is also a compound of numerous food additives. Recently, aluminium exposition is increasingly considered to cohere with cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Lately, due to an increasing attentiveness on this topic, limiting values for food additives have been tightened by the EFSA. However, cellular effects of aluminium and especially aluminium-containing nanomaterials, that represent a significant part of chemicals found in food products, are widely unknown and in the focus of our research activities, for example in the bilateral SolNanoTOX project. We established an in vitro simulation system of the GI tract, where nanomaterials undergo the different physiological, chemical and proteinbiochemical conditions of saliva, gastric juice and the intestine. The artificially digested nanomaterials, as well as soluble aluminium chloride as ionic control substance, were subjected to several analytical and biochemical methods to characterize their change of appearance and their cytotoxic effects on intestinal cellular models. We observed the fate of the nanomaterials during typical pH-values of saliva, gastric and intestinal juice with Dynamic light scattering measurements and ICP-MS in the single particle mode. After observable disappearance at pH 2 the particles recovered in the simulated intestinal fluid. The simulation of the GI tract, mainly the change of pH settings, can lead to a certain chemical activation of aluminium that can increase bioavailability in the intestine after oral uptake of aluminium-containing food products. In vitro assays like CTB, MTT and cellular impedance measurements showed that there were no acute cytotoxic effects measurable after a period up to 48h after incubation, comparable to undigested particles. In contrast, high amounts of aluminium ions showed synergistic effects on cell viability compared to non-digested aluminium ions. Although toxicological potential of Al ions to healthy tissue appears to be low, increased hazardous potential cannot be ruled out to pre-damaged tissue and can have a relevance in risk assessment for special consumer groups with for example chronical intestinal inflammation or dietary eating behavior combined with high exposure to Al-containing food products. T1 - Array-Prüfköpfe für luftgekoppelte Ultraschallprüfung N2 - Seit Jahren stellt die luftgekoppelte Ultraschallprüfung eine etablierte Alternative zur konventionellen Prüfung von Leichtbaukomponenten aus den Bereichen Luft- und Raumfahrt sowie Automotive dar. Im Gegenteil zur flüssigkeitsgekoppelten Prüfung in Kontakt oder im Tauchbecken ist sie weniger invasiv und bietet daher zeitliche und finanzielle Anreize. Normalerweise wird die luftgekoppelte Prüfung mit Einzelelementschwingern in Durchschallung realisiert, wohingegen die Gruppenstrahlertechnik bereits Industriestandard im Bereich der Kontakttechnik darstellt. Die damit verbundenen Vorteile wie die aktive Fokussierung oder, die gezielte Manipulation des Einschallwinkels zur Anregung von geführten Wellen, finden im Bereich der luftgekoppelten Prüfung dabei noch wenig Anwendung. Im Rahmen dieses Beitrags stellen wir die ersten Zwischenergebnisse des geförderten Projektes „PALUP – Phased- Array-Technik für Luftultraschall-Prüfungen“ vor. Ziel des Projektes ist die Entwicklung von Mehrelementschwingern auf Basis von zellulären Kunststoffen, die Entwicklung einer dedizierten Pulserstufe im Kilovoltbereich, sowie die nötige rauscharme messtechnische Auswertung jedes Einzelelements. The aminated aroyl-S,N-ketene acetals are emissive in the solid state and in the aggregate, but not in solution, thus, they are AIEgens (aggregation induced emission chromogens). Aggregation is induced by fractional alternation of the solvent mixture, here by increasing the water fraction of ethanol/water mixtures. For most derivatives, the emission upon induced aggregation stems solely from the aroyl-S,N-ketene acetal chromophore, regardless whether excitation occurs at the absorption maximum of the triarylamine or the aroyl-S,N-ketene acetal. Therefore, a pronounced energy transfer from the triarylamine donor to the aroyl-S,N-ketene acetal acceptor can be inferred. The color of the emission can be controlled by choosing the para-aroyl substituent. A partial energy transfer could also be observed for some bichromophores, leading to aggregation-induced dual emission (AIDE). In addition, four examples of aminated diaroyl-S,N-ketene acetals were added to the compound library. The electron-withdrawing properties of the additional aroyl group provide a bathochromic shift of the emission band of the aroyl-S,N-ketene acetal. These bichromophores also show AIDE and in one case even aggregation-induced white light emission as a result of additive color mixing. This way, truffles can be harvested faster, cheaper and more efficiently compared to the current method using dogs. For this purpose, suitable marker substances in the aroma of ripe truffles were identified using analytical-chemical methods. The collected data was used to create aroma profiles of different truffle species. The specificity of possible marker substances was confirmed with a truffle dog study. The hypothesis “If trained truffle dogs recognize the substances as supposed truffles in the context of an experiment, they can be regarded as specific” was made. The results show that the truffle aroma is mainly characterized and perceived by dogs by dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide. For the concentration measurement of these markers in the ambient air, we are currently building our own detector. The Challenge is to get a fast measurement with a very low limit of detection at the same time. The device will resemble a metal detector in terms of shape and handling and be particularly suitable for mobile use. The R&D cooperation project between the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and sglux GmbH thus enables truffles to be harvested professionally and systematically. This brings the technical advances that have revolutionized agriculture over the last hundred years to truffle cultivation for the first time. N2 - In the last decade, applications of X-rays to the study of manuscripts significantly spread in both diversity and extent. They range from writing material analysis, mostly with X-ray fluorescence (XRF), permitting non-invasive characterization of inks and pigments used, to the investigation of the origin of writing supports. In addition, XRF mapping has proved to be an invaluable tool for recovering erased text. Finally, computed-tomography (CT) has shown potential in virtually unrolling rolls, making text readable without using-damaging mechanical methods. Despite their growing use, little attention has been paid to the side effects of such analytical tools. We observed irreversible parchment colour changes during some experiments on dead-sea scrolls with synchrotron radiation sources. Furthermore, partial photo-reduction of iron under high intensity beam during X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) measurements of iron-gall ink on paper has been reported several times [5,6]. Such phenomena have mostly been overlooked so far, although there is an increasing awareness of the necessity to study them. We conducted experiments at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) facilities to investigate X-ray induced structural alteration of paper and parchment to see whether the presence of absorption centres (ink and pigments) has an impact. In addition to better understanding degradation processes, we are aiming to define an appropriate methodology of analysis of manuscripts with a tolerable risk of damage. The first results concerning X-ray induced damage of cellulose materials have already been presented at the Synchrotron Radiation and Neutrons in Art and Archaeology (SR2A). We are focusing here on the results on parchment materials.
