Sowohl das Empfehlungsschreiben des damaligen Direktors als auch die Zustimmung zum zügigen Ankauf dürften Beleg dafür sein, dass man damals der festen Überzeugung war, ein etwa 250 Jahre altes, authentisches Silbergefäß erworben zu haben. Die aktuelle kunstwissenschaftliche Begutachtung des Innungspokals lässt begründete Fragen zum Alter und zur Originalität des Objektes, welches heute in der Sammlung des Grünen Gewölbes präsentiert wird, aufkommen. Die kunst-wissenschaftliche und kunsttechnologische Expertise reicht hier allein ftir eine gesicherte Altersbestimmung nicht aus und soll deshalb durch naturwissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zur Materialzusammensetzung unterstützt werden. Via direct and indirect electron transfer processes MRB are able to convert insoluble passive film species like Fe(III)-oxides to soluble Fe(II)-oxides and hydroxides. This weakening of the passive film not only leads to an acceleration of the general corrosion processes, but also increases the susceptibility of stainless steels to pitting corrosion. Electron transfer mechanisms are not yet fully understood and the role of bacteria in corrosion processes is controversially discussed in the literature. Moreover, recent research indicates that the secretion of electron shuttles like riboflavins by MRB also contributes to the extracellular electron transfer. This project aims at clarifying the chemical and electrochemical interaction mechanisms of MRB with stainless steel surfaces. To investigate the changes in the oxide chemistry on the stainless steel surface in the presence of biomolecules and MRB a new flow cell has been designed and constructed which enables the collection of XANES (X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure) spectra in fluorescence mode at the Fe K-edge and electrochemical analysis. Availability of oxygen and the pre-exposure of the MRB to Fe(III) during cultivation have been investigated as parameters with significant effect on the corrosion rates. XANES analysis is supplemented by ex-situ X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (FT-IRRAS) to complete the surface characterisation in terms of the oxide chemistry and the composition of organic residues. Complementary electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (e-QCM) measurements have been performed to quantify the kinetics of bacterial attachment and biofilm formation. Together with the frequency shift, the evolution of the dissipation signal has been analyzed to investigate the changes in viscosity and structure of the biofilm from initial stages up to maturation. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) has been used to study the structure and viscoelastic properties of the biofilms after e-QCM experiments. The presentation will summarize our results on the effects of individual surface and environment related parameters on the chemical/electrochemical interaction mechanisms of MRB leading to passive film degradation on stainless steel surfaces and provide useful insights from a fundamental aspect for the development of novel mitigation strategies for microbiologically influenced corrosion. T1 - The Colour X-ray Camera – Basics and Applications of a 2D X-ray Detector N2 - The Color X-ray Camera CXC or SLcam® is an energy-resolving X-ray camera capable of energy- and space-resolved measurements. It consists of a high-speed CCD detector coupled to a polycapil-lary optic that conducts the X-ray photons from the probe to distinct pixels onto the detector. The camera is capable of fast acquisition of spatially and energy resolved fluorescence images. A dedicated software enables the acquisition and the online processing of the spectral data for all 69696 pixels, leading to a real-time visualization of the elements distribution in a sample. It was developed in a joint project with BAM, IFG Berlin and PN Sensors. In this contribution we will mainly discuss the use of the CXC at our beamline, the BAMline at BESSY II and imaging applications of the CXC from different areas, like biology and archaeometry. T1 - Silver diffusion in low-melting alkali zinc borate model glasses studied by means of SNMS, TEM and XAS N2 - In many late-breaking research fields as in photovoltaics, microelectronics, nuclear waste glasses or at least mirror glasses silver diffusion in glasses is relevant to the issues of high-level functionality and recycling. The present study is focused on silver diffusion in innovative, low-melting alkali zinc borate glasses (X2O-ZnO-B2O3, X = Li, Na, K, Rb) potentially usable for silver metallization-pastes in solar cells. The glasses were coated with a thin metallic silver layer and heat treatments in air and nitrogen close to Tg at 470 °C for 2 h were performed. After heat treatment under air and nitrogen atmospheres the coating thickness, measured by a white light interferometer, was about 1.8 µm thick. Silver depth profiles determined by means of secondary neutral mass spectrometry (SNMS) indicate the fastest silver diffusion to a depth of 3.5 µm for Li2O-ZnO-B2O3 (LZB) glass. Nevertheless, the influence of the different alkali ions on the silver diffusion is small. The oxygen availability determines the silver diffusion into the glasses. The oxygen promotes the oxidation of the silver layer enabling Ag+ to diffuse into the glass and to precipitate as Ag0. Both species were detected by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The precipitated metallic silver particles in Na2O-ZnO-B2O3 (NZB) glass have a mean size of 5.9 nm ± 1.2 nm diameter, which was determined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Phase separation in zinc-rich and zinc-poor phases with a mean diameter of 75 nm ± 20 nm occurred in NZB glass after heat treatment. Particles with aerodynamic diameters less than 10 μm (PM 10) and especially the fine fraction below 2.5 μm (PM2.5) are of particular importance, as they can enter the human respiratory system and cause acute and chronic respiratory or cardiovascular diseases. The mass distribution of airborne particles in dependence of their diameters is well-known, but also the abundance and temporal variation of trace elements in air (mass concentrations down to the pg/m³ range) are crucial. These elements originate from various natural (abrasion, erosion) and anthropogenic sources (combustion, road traffic), which complicate the discrimination between harmless and toxic emissions. Some new methods of investigation are therefore needed and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy has ascertained ist huge potential in this matter, thanks to the possibility to determine simultaneously, in a time-resolved manner, the mass concentrations of critical elements which can be considered as markers of a potential toxic source. A method for the quantitative Analysis of airborne particles directly collected on sample substrates (30 mm quartz reflectors and 1" Si wafers suited for total-reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis (TXRF) will be presented. Samplings were performed using a three- stage Dekati™ PM10 impactor (>10 μm, 2.5 to 10 μm and 1 to 2.5 μm) and a four-stage Sioutas Personal Cascade Impactor (>2.5 μm, 1 to 2.5 μm,0.5 to 1 μm and 0.25 to 0.5 μm) at indoor and outdoor sites at the Atominstitut (Vienna, Austria). Quantitative results of two outdoor test sampling campaigns (July 2016 and January 2017) will be presented and discussed. Low detection limits were assessed via TXRF and range from several 10 to several 100 pg/m³ depending on the element and particle size fraction. In this work, we automate the generation of such MLIPs in a Python code-based workflow, based on the automation tools atomate29 and pymatgen10 which combines the automatic DFT computations with the automated fitting of GAPs. A1 - Reinholz, Uwe A1 - Radtke, Martin T1 - Toxic metals in tattoo inks N2 - Tattooing practice is adopted worldwide and represents a socio-cultural phenomenon, but the injection into the skin of coloring agents, such as metals might pose a serious health problem. Tattoo ink compounds are in general not officially controlled. Moreover, the origins as well as the chemical and toxicological specifications of these coloring agents are hardly known by the producers, the tattooists and by the consumers. In this view, the aim of this study was to characterize the metal composition of tattoo inks available in the market and to draw attention to the associated risk for human health. A set of tattoo inks from the brand Kuro Sumi was analyzed by means of Synchrotron-based X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry (Sy-XRF) at BAMline @ BESSY II and Raman Spectroscopy using the XploRA confocal Raman microscope (785 nm laser). Carbon black, rutile, phtalo blue, phtalo green, helizarin red, helizarin yellow and dioxazine violet were respectively identified in black, white, blue, green, red, yellow and violet inks. However, a wide range of transition and heavy metals, potentially hazardous was revealed by Sy-XRF. A semi-quantitative evaluation has revealed, in some inks, amounts of Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb higher than the allowed according to the resolution adopted by the Council of Europe on the safety of tattoos and permanent make-up (PMU. Außerdem ist es einfach bearbeitbar und weitestgehend gegen chemische Einflüsse resistent. Die Untersuchungen von Gold mit synchrotronstrahlungsangeregter Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse sind zerstörungsfrei und geben Auskunft über die in der untersuchten Probe vorhandenen chemischen Elemente. Bei den hier vorgestellten Untersuchungen an der BAMline stehen Fragestellungen wie Herkunft, Herstellungsverfahren und Zusammengehörigkeit von Goldfunden im Vordergrund. These studies open up exciting opportunities to find new materials in a much faster way than based on experimental work alone. However, performing density functional theory calculations for several thousand materials can still be very time consuming. The use of, for example, faster chemical heuristics and machine-learned interatomic potentials would allow to consider a much larger number of candidate materials. In addition to DFT based high-throughput searches, the seminar will discuss two possible ways to accelerate high-throughput searches. Using data analysis on the structures and coordination environments of 5000 oxides, we were able to investigate a chemical heuristic – the famous Pauling rules – regarding its usefulness for the fast prediction of stable materials. We have also investigated how machine-learned interatomic potentials can be used to accelerate the prediction of (dynamically) stable materials. The use of these potentials makes vibrational properties accessible in a much faster way than based on DFT. Our results based on a newly developed potential for silicon allotropes showed excellent agreement with DFT reference data (agreement of the frequencies within 0.1-0.2 THz). T1 - Cr, Cu and Zn K-edge SR-TXRF-XANES of indoor aerosol samples at BESSY II and ELETTRA N2 - Airborne particulate matter is an issue of growing concern in industrialized countries. Particles with diameters of less than 10 μm (especially those smaller than 2.5 μm) can enter the human respiratory system and contribute to various diseases depending on their chemical composition and the chemical bonding state, in which elements are present. This chemical speciation can be obtained using X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis (XANES), which requires a tunable excitation source and therefore has to be carried out at synchrotron facilities. Our special interest lies on the analysis of indoor airborne particulate matter, as particle composition and health effects of outdoor particles have been studied abundantly. For this work, samples were collected in various office rooms in the Atominstitut (ATI) building. The BAMline at BESSYII features a double-multilayer monochromator (DMM) and a double-crystal monochromator (DCM). The DCM offers an energy resolution E/ΔE of around 103, which makes it suitable for XANES applications. The ATI SR-TXRF vacuum chamber, formerly located at HASYLAB, Beamline L, is now available at the BAMline. The chamber offers a sample changer for up to 8 quartz reflectors and a 30 mm² silicon drift detector (SDD) was used. Aerosol samples were produced using a modified three-stage Dekati™ impactor. For this work, only the coarse (2.5 to 10 μm) and the fine particle fraction (1 to 2.5 μm), were of interest. XANES results of Cr, Cu and Zn will be presented on this poster. The X-ray Fluorescence beamline at ELETTRA operates in partnership with the IAEA an ultra-high vacuum instrument with a 7-axis manipulator suitable for a variety of X-ray analytical techniques, such as grazing incidence and total reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis (GI-XRF and TXRF), X-ray reflectometry (XRR) and XANES. Samples were produced using a four-stage Sioutas Personal Cascade Impactor. With this impactor, it is possible to produce size-fractionated samples down to the sub-μm range (Stages: A > 2.5 μm, B 1 to 2.5 μm, C 0.5 to 1 μm and D 0.25 to 0.5 μm). Direct sampling was performed on siliconized 25 mm Si wafers suitable for TXRF. Cu-K edge SR-TXRF-XANES analysis was carried out for samples of all impactor stages. T1 - Sulfuric acid resistance of copper-doped and plain metakaolin-based alkali-activated materials studied by 29Si, 27Al and 1H MAS NMR, and Cu K-edge XANES spectroscopy N2 - Alkali-activated materials have been repeatedly reported to exhibit high acid resistance, but no generally accepted hypothesis regarding the underlying mechanisms has emerged yet. To contribute to this issue, K-waterglass-activated metakaolin specimens, with and without the addition of CuSO4·5H2O in the starting mix, were exposed to either a chemically aggressive sewer environment (mortars) or sulfuric acid (pastes). The mode of copper incorporation in the materials and the formation of copper phases in the corroded layers were studied by XANES at the Cu K-edge, and 29Si, 27Al and 1H MAS NMR was employed to understand the processes during acid attack. Copper was found as a spertiniite-like phase in the as-cured materials, while in the deterioration layers of the pastes it was present as copper sulfate. In the corroded regions of the mortars, unequivocal identification of Cu phases was not possible, but the results were reconcilable with the presence of copper carbonate hydroxide. The solid-state NMR results revealed virtually complete dissolution of the K-A-S-H gel and the formation of silica gel, interpreted to be a central mechanism determining the acid resistance. No significant differences between the microstructural alterations of the pastes with and without Cu addition on (chemical) sulfuric acid attack were observed. A1 - Reinholz, Uwe A1 - Radtke, Martin T1 - Assessment of heavy metals and hazardous substances in tattoo inks N2 - Tattooing practice is adopted worldwide and represents a socio-cultural phenomenon, but the injection into the skin of coloring agents, such as metals might pose a serious health problem. Tattoo ink compounds are in general not officially controlled. Moreover, the origins as well as the chemical and toxicological specifications of these coloring agents are hardly known by the producers, the tattooists and by the consumers. In this view, the aim of this study was to characterize the metal composition of tattoo inks available in the market and to draw attention to the associated risk for human health. A set of tattoo inks from the brand Kuro Sumi was analyzed by means of Synchrotron-based X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry (Sy-XRF) at BAMline @ BESSY II and Raman Spectroscopy using the XploRA confocal Raman microscope (785 nm laser) at the LIBPhys-UNL. Carbon black, rutile, phtalo blue, phtalo green, helizarin red, helizarin yellow and dioxazine violet were respectively identified in black, white, blue, green, red, yellow and violet inks. However, a wide range of transition and heavy metals, potentially hazardous was revealed by Sy-XRF. A semi-quantitative evaluation has revealed, in some inks, amounts of Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb higher than the allowed according to the resolution adopted by the Council of Europe on the safety of tattoos and permanent make-up. T1 - Zinc distribution in human bone: Sr-micro X-ray fluorescence imaging of osteoporotic samples N2 - Zn is known to be located in the reactive centers of various enzymes, which play a major role in the mineralization process at sites where new bone formation occurs. In addition, elevated Zn levels are supposed to increase the proliferation rate of osteoblasts [1] and may lead to a stimulation of bone formation in vitro and in vivo [2]. Consequently, Zn seems to play an essential role in bone formation and mineralization through various pathways. We thus expected Zn levels to be altered at sites of extensive bone formation like in the case of fracture healing. We measured the same areas on human bone samples with both a scanning confocal synchrotron radiation induced micro X-ray fluorescence (SR-μXRF) at the FLUO beamline (ANKA) and a full-field Color X-ray Camera at the BAMline (Bessy II) setup in order to find the ideal SR-μXRF imaging method to investigate trace element distributions in bone samples. As zinc is a trace element of special interest in bone, the setups were optimized for Zn detection. The setups were compared concerning count rate, required measurement time and resolution. We could show that the ideal method is depending on the element of interest. While for Ca (a major constituent of the bone with a low energy of 3.69keV for K) the Color X-ray Camera provided us with a higher resolution in the plane, for Zn (a trace element in bone) only the confocal SR-μXRF was able to sufficiently image the distribution. Biopsies of healing osteoporotic fractures (Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs)) were investigated in regard to their Zn distribution. The samples were measured with a confocal SR-μXRF setup with a 10 μm x 15 μm resolution at the FLUO beamline at ANKA. As we found increased Zn levels, which seemed to be accumulated in narrow structures between bone packages we also investigated thin cuts (4 μm thick) of two sample areas with a higher resolution of 1 μm x 1 μm (monochromatic beam with E= 17 keV) at B16 at Diamond SR facility. We will present the advantages and disadvantages of all three SR-μXRF setups (ANKA FLUO beamline, Bessy II BAMline, and Diamond B16) for imaging elemental distributions in bone with a focus on Zn. We will also show the distribution of Zn in healing VCFs. Metal reducing bacteria (MRB), for instance, are capable of utilizing various metallic compounds as electron acceptors. Besides chromium, uranium and manganese as well as many organic compounds, Fe(III) is converted to the soluble form Fe(II) during the bacterial metabolism. This could lead to a weakening of the protective passivation layer on stainless steel and thereby facilitate microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). Even tough the processes of electron transfer are not yet entirely explained, the contribution of flavins and other humic substances as electron shuttles is widely discussed in the literature. Moreover, the adsorption of organic thin films on steel surfaces can lead to surface preconditioning and thus to changes in adhesion behavior of bacteria. The aim of this work is to understand the chemical and electrochemical interaction mechanisms of MRB with steel surfaces by combining electrochemistry and surface-analytical techniques. The investigations primarily focus on the effect of pre-adsorbed thin organic films and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on the electron transfer processes between bacteria and steel surfaces. Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance (eQCM) studies have been performed to investigate the adsorption/desorption kinetics of organic films as well as the formation of biofilms on FeCr electrodes. Furthermore, the evolution of the biofilms on steel surfaces has been analyzed by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to support the QCM studies with information on structural changes during different stages of biofilm growth. Electron transfer and corrosion processes have been analyzed by means of square wave voltammetry (SWV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), respectively. The results of electrochemical studies are complemented with microscopic and spectroscopic characterisation of organic adsorbates and analysis of changes in the passive film chemistry and surface morphology. This presentation will summarize our results on the chemical and electrochemical interaction mechanisms of MRB on steel surfaces leading to passive film degradation. The role of flavins in accelerating corrosion processes will be elucidated in detail to provide useful insights from a fundamental aspect for the understanding of the initial stages of microbiologically influenced corrosion in the presence of MRB. T1 - Following Pt in gold Byzantine tesserae: towards provenance and chronology with SR-XRF N2 - Gold mosaics, made from gold and glass, are one of the best expressions of Late Antique Byzantine and Early Islamic art. The gold alloys, whose composition seems to indicate that gold coins were re-used to fabricate the tesserae, can be used to provide information on the mosaics chronology. Monetary Byzantine gold is in fact characterized by the presence of Pt, which contents in the gold alloy change over time, but Pt must be measured in 0.2-0.4 µm thickness gold leaves that were beaten to be sandwiched between two glass layers. To analyze this samples the D²XRF set-up at the BAMline at the BESSY synchrotron in Berlin was used. The combination of a crystal for wavelength dispersion and an energy resolving single photon counting pnCCD allows the realization of this very simple wavelength dispersive detection system. With this system an MDL of 1 μg/g for the determination of Pt in Au under optimal conditions can be reached. Gold leaf tesserae from nine archaeological sites, covering the period that goes from the 5th c. to the 8th c., were analyzed. The presence of Pt in the majority of the samples confirmed the re-use of coins. The Pt contents separate the samples in three groups, one of which having the same chemical characteristics as the Byzantine gold could be compared to dated coins for chronology. These structural properties are essential (i) to understand underlying reaction mechanism and (ii) to further improve the design of efficient catalysts. This investigation is based on a newly developed XAFS setup comprising both time- and lateral-resolved XAFS information simultaneously in a single-shot (S2XAFS). The primary broadband beam is generated by a filter/X-ray-mirror combination (bandpass). The transmitted beam through the sample is diffracted by a convexly bent Si (111) crystal, producing a divergent beam. This, in turn, is collected by an area sensitive detector with a theta to 2 theta geometry. This facile, stable and scanningless setup was tested at the BAMline @ BESSY-II (Berlin, Germany). This contribution focuses on further experimental optimizations allowing the characterization of supported vanadium oxide (VOx) based catalysts at the lower hard X-ray regime (5 to 6 keV). First S2XAFS measurements of these catalysts are presented herein. Supported VOx catalysts show promising results in the oxidation of methane to formaldehyde. S2XAFS allows determining the structural composition of the metal (i.e. vanadium) based on a fast and smart setup. It is therefore an ideal tool to identify crucial roles of chemical compounds in catalytic reactions. The information on the used gilding technique might be crucial for the conservation and preservation of archaeological objects. Therefore, the main objective of this work is the detailed understanding of the behaviour of Hg under conditions of fire gilding. I.e. the understanding of the diffusion and evaporating behaviour of Hg, depending on parameters like substrate material (silver, copper, bronze, brass...), heating temperature and duration, and the resulting Hg depth profiles under these conditions. Secondary objective is the establishment of a measurement protocol for the unambiguous identification of different types of gilding, based solely on non-destructive methods, which can be applied to historical samples. In a first step, fire-gilded samples have been prepared on Cu and Ag sheet metal, respectively. Some of the gildings were produced by a professional goldsmith; another set of samples was produced under laboratory conditions. A dispersive element is placed behind the sample to investigate. The broadband incoming beam transmits the sample, is then dispersed and finally collected by a position sensitive detector. This allows the recording of a whole X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) or extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectrum in a single shot. The dispersive element is a Si(111) crystal, bent by means of a so called wafer bender, developed in house. Our setup is very flexible, easy to adjust and allows a time resolution down to one second which can be used to follow chemical reactions with dynamics on this time scale. We combined an energy dispersive array detector for X-rays with a coded aperture to get high resolution images. In coded aperture imaging, an object is projected through a mask, producing many overlapping images on the detector. To get the information about the investigated object out of the projected image, a decoding step is necessary. The first part of our project was to develop the decoding algorithms. We tested the reported reconstruction with an antimask and compared the results with the performance of self-written reconstruction programs based on an iterative and a genetic algorithm. First tests were performed with raytracing simulations. The next step was the collection of experimental data at the BAMline @ BESSY II (HZB). A test objects could be successfully reconstructed with our newly developed algorithm. Investigations of gold using synchrotron radiation excited X-ray fluorescence analysis are non-destructive and provide information about the chemical elements present in the sample under investigation. The investigations presented here at BAMline focus on questions such as the origin, manufacturing process, and association of gold findings. The different questions are explained by a number of examples ranging from the Viking treasure from Hiddensee to the Nebra Sky Disk and finds from Egypt. The find from Bernstorf is discussed in detail. A Bayesian treatment of the authenticity is shown. To increase the effectiveness and in preparation for BESSY III, algorithms from the field of machine learning are increasingly used. In this paper, several examples in the areas of beamline alignment and measurement time optimization based on Bayesian optimization (BO) with Gaussian processes (GP) are presented. BO is a method for finding the global optimum of a function using a probabilistic model represented by a GP. The advantage of this method is that it can handle high-dimensional problems, does not depend on the initial estimate, and also provides uncertainty estimates. After a short introduction to BO and GP, the first example is the automatic alignment of our double multilayer monochromator (DMM). To achieve optimal performance, up to three linear and two angular motor positions have to be optimized. To achieve this with a grid scan, at least 100^5 measurement points would be required. Assuming that all positions can be aligned independently, 100*5 points are still necessary. We show that with BO and GP less than 100 points are sufficient to achieve equal or better results. The second example is the optimization of measurement time in XRF scanning. Here we will show the advantage of the BO GP approach over point-by-point scanning. As can be seen in Fig. 1, the number of points required and thus the measurement time can be reduced by a factor of 50, while the loss in image quality is acceptable. The advantages and limitations of this approach will be discussed. Mittlerweile sind Prüfmethoden an Bauwerken wirtschaftlich einsetzbar und auch so leistungsfähig, dass die für die Tragfähigkeit und Gebrauchstauglichkeit wesentlichen Parameter identifiziert werden können. Ein wesentlicher Punkt ist hierbei die Integration derartiger Messergebnisse in Rechenmodelle, die für die Nachrechnung des Bauwerks verwendet werden. Dies können sowohl semiprobabilistische Rechenmodelle als auch vollprobabilistische Modelle sein. In the past, methods for quality evaluation and concepts for validation expanded into NDT-CE to improve the objectivity of measured data. Thereby, a metrological foundation was developed to collect statistically sound and structurally relevant information about the inner construction of structures without destructive interventions. More recently, the demand for recalculations of structural safety was identified. This paper summarizes a basic research study on structural analyses of bridges in combination with NDT. The aim is to use measurement data of nondestructive testing methods as stochastic quantities in static calculations. Therefore, a methodical interface between the guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement and probabilistic approximation procedures (e.g. FORM) has been proven to be suitable. The motivation is to relate the scientific approach of the structural analysis with real information coming from existing structures and not with those found in the literature. Compared to the new building design, safety reserves can be used in the evaluation of such existing structures, since uncertainties that may arise during the design, construction and previous Service time are better known or no longer present. A1 - Ebell, Gino A1 - Völker, Tobias T1 - Testing to reasses - Corrosion activity assessment based on NDT using a prestressed concrete bridge as case study N2 - Corrosion of concrete reinforcement is one of the major damage mechanisms affecting both the load-bearing capacity and the serviceability of reinforced concrete structures significantly. The challenge of detecting corrosion is that the corrosion process in its various forms is not immediately visible, especially in the corrosion initiation phase inside the concrete. When externally discernible damages are observed during visual inspections on the structure, the extent of the damage inside the concrete is often already significant. Corrosion caused by carbonation often leads to severe discoloration of the surface or even large-area spalling of the concrete cover. In contrast, chloride-induced corrosion is usually difficult to observe visually, but can cause much more serious damage in less time. The effect occurs locally and can lead to weakening of the cross-section of the reinforcement. This, in turn, can cause sudden structural collapses without prior notice. Therefore, it is important to investigate whether there is protection against corrosion of the reinforcement in the concrete and to detect active corrosion in the structure at an early stage. In the meanwhile, various non-destructive and minimally invasive testing methods are available to evaluate the resistance to penetration of corrosion-promoting pollutants and to detect active corrosion. In this paper, a bridge crossing the river Regen (Germany) is used as a case-study to demonstrate how the information obtained applying different testing methods can be combined and evaluated in the context of structural reassessments. Both the results of the permeability testing (Torrent tester) and the electrical resistance measurement (Wenner probe) are considered, as well as active corrosion areas are localized using the half-cell potential mapping combined with the concrete cover measurement with the eddy current method and ground penetrating radar (GPR). The results are evaluated using drill cores and in addition laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was applied to obtain information about possible ion transport in the concrete. The current and urgently required efforts to increase sustainability and protect the environment will likely result in extended service lives up to 100 years. To achieve such objectives, it is required to assess structures over their entire lifecycles. Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods can reliably support the assessment of existing structures during the construction, operational, and decommissioning phases. One of the most important and safety-relevant components of a prestressed concrete structure are the tendons. NDT methods such as the ultrasonic echo method are suitable for both the detection and the localization of the tendons, i.e., the measurement of their geometrical position inside the component. The uniqueness of structures, concrete heterogeneity, and varying amounts of secondary components such as the reinforcement represent obstacles in the application of these methods in practice. The aim of this contribution is to demonstrate a practicable procedure, that can be used in the field to determine the parameters required for the measuring data analysis without extensive knowledge about the investigated components. For this purpose, a polyamide reference specimen is used to show which steps are required to obtain reliable imaging information on the position of tendons from the measurement data. The procedure is then demonstrated on a concrete test specimen that covers various relevant and practice-oriented test scenarios, such as varying tendon depths and component thicknesses. Ein wesentlicher Vorteil bei der Nachrechnung besteht gegenüber dem Neubauentwurf in der Möglichkeit, Informationen über den tatsächlichen Zustand der Bauwerke zu erheben – im Idealfall ohne wesentliche destruktive Eingriffe in die Bausubstanz. Deren Verwendung bei der Zuverlässigkeitsanalyse dient der Zuschärfung von Berechnungsmodellen und ermöglicht realitätsnähere Bauwerksbeurteilungen. Die Einbeziehung von Messdaten bei der Zuverlässigkeitsbewertung setzt jedoch voraus, dass die Qualität der gemessenen Informationen bekannt und deren Vergleichbarkeit sichergestellt ist. Darüber hinaus sollte die Relevanz der messbaren Informationen beziffert werden, um wirtschaftliche Inspektionen am Bauwerk gezielt durchführen zu können. In diesem Beitrag wird am Beispiel von Ultraschall- und Radarmessungen an einer Spannbetonbrücke gezeigt, wie ZfP-Ergebnisse bei der Zuverlässigkeitsbewertung von Bestandsbauwerken mit probabilistischen Methoden genutzt werden können. Betrachtet werden innere geometrische Abmessungen wie die Lage der Bewehrung oder von Spanngliedern. Die Relevanz der messbaren Informationen wird anhand von Sensitivitätsanalysen beziffert. Messunsicherheitsbetrachtungen dienen der Bezifferung der Qualität der gemessenen Informationen und der Gewährleistung deren Vergleichbarkeit. The material used in these barriers must be adapted to the host rock parameters. Shrinking and cracking must be avoided to provide a barrier with almost zero permeability. For repositories in salt rock environments, several types of salt concrete (SC) are possible construction materials. Within the project SealWasteSafe, we compared the behavior of an innovative alkali-activated material (AAM) with standard SC in their hydration and hardening phase. To monitor the microstructural changes within the two materials SC and AAM, acoustic emission (AE) signals have been recorded for up to ~250 days on 340-liter-cubic specimens. The phenomenon of AE is defined as the emission of elastic waves in materials due to the release of localized internal energy. Such energy release can be caused by the nucleation of micro-fracture, e.g., in concrete while curing or when exposed to load. The occurrence of AE events gives first rough indications of microstructural changes and potentially occurring cracking and thus, provides insights for structural health monitoring (SHM). The results show, that for the first 28 days after casting, less AE activity was detected in the AAM compared to SC. After 61 days, in the AAM material, the number of AE events exceeded those observed in the SC. However, the majority of the AE detected and located in AAM was related to surface effects, and not to microstructural changes or occurring cracks within the bulk volume. Additionally, the source location analysis indicated, that despite lower activity in SC, we observed some clustering of the events. In contrast, in AAM, the activity inside the specimen is randomly distributed over the whole volume. The monitoring results help to estimate the material’s sealing properties which are crucial to assess their applicability as sealing material for engineered barriers. Within the SealWasteSafe project, we compared the performance of an innovative alkali-activated material (AAM) and standard salt concrete (SC), as potential materials for sealing structures for nuclear waste repositories. Two 340-liter-cubic specimens were studied for up to ~250 days by a multisensory monitoring setup. Specifically, the long-term acoustic emission monitoring aimed to analyze the development of microstructural changes within materials. The monitoring analysis showed fewer acoustic emission events in AAM compared to SC in the first 61 days. After approximately two months of monitoring, the number of AE events in AAM significantly exceeded the number of events in SC. The analysis showed, however, that the increased AE activity was mainly caused by surface effects of the AAM material and not by the formation of cracks within the material. This contribution presents the use of acoustic emission analysis, both in the time and frequency domains, for monitoring and characterization of materials with potential use as engineering barriers for nuclear waste repositories. Compared to more traditional light sources, e.g. flash or halogen lamps, their output power can be easily modulated at high rates, allowing a wide variety of complex excitations to be realized. Although their total optical output power can be theoretically scaled to arbitrary values, the maximum output power is practically limited by many factors: the maximum power that the sample under test can absorb without altering the lighted surface itself, the trade-off between power density and inspected area, the cost of the laser system, etc. Furthermore, when working with spatial modulator systems, the output power could be limited to avoid provoking any damages on such devices. Nevertheless, to guarantee sufficient heating even for highly thermally conductive materials and/or deeply buried defects, the heating times can be extended, e.g., either by using step heating, long pulse thermography, or by lock-in thermography with a continuously modulated heating. However, for all these approaches, the ranging capabilities of the thermographic defect detection are reduced due to the limited frequency content of the excitation. To tackle this problem, i.e. to increase the excitation energy while preserving its frequency content, new approaches have been developed in the last two decades, among which the use of coded excitations combined with pulse-compression, and the use of multiple lock-in analysis or of a frequency modulated excitation signal. The challenges of such temporally structured heating techniques are manifold, for example, the DC component inherent in optical heating must be taken into account. In general, a wider frequency bandwidth or greater variability of the frequency components also means greater complexity for signal generation and data processing. Using immersion makes it possible to test these objects with standard ultrasonic linear array probes. Here, the probe positions and orientations provided by the robot are used for merging the locally acquired image data into a 3D-reconstruction. The quality of this reconstruction is highly dependent on the alignment of the tool center point (TCP) of the physical probe with the TCP used in the digital model. For common industrial tools, the TCP is usually acquired using geometric features of the tools. However, for ultrasonic arrays in immersion, there is a water standoff between the probe and the test object, therefore the TCP is in free space in front of the array and cannot be acquired with the common method. To overcome this challenge, we propose a method that allows the robotic ultrasonic system to automatically self-adjust the positioning of the UT probe using a test block made of steel with defined geometric features as a target for referencing. For each of the six degrees of freedom, a scan and adjustment routine are established using the data acquired by the UT probe to update the TCP’s position and orientation in the robot control. Given a coarse pre-definition of the TCP and the known target test block, no human interaction is required while the system determines the optimum tool position and orientation. Part of this work will be used to improve and extend standards for robotic ultrasonic test systems, e.g. ISO 24647. Es wurde ein Roboterarm verwendet, der ein lineares Ultraschallarray in Tauchtechnik führt und Prüfdaten aufnimmt, die mit einer adaptierten TFM (Total Focusing Method) zu Rekonstruktionen der Außen- und Innenoberfläche verarbeitet werden. In der aktuellen zweiten Projektphase wird die Methode für Werkstoffe erweitert, die anisotrope akustische Eigenschaften aufweisen. In diesem Beitrag wird eine Methode vorgestellt, wie sich die Kristallausrichtung bzw. die richtungsabhängige Schallgeschwindigkeit mittels eines linearen Ultraschallarrays bestimmen lässt. Für den Sendefall eines Randelements in Kontakttechnik können dabei Wellen identifiziert werden, die sich parallel zur Prüfkopfapertur im Prüfobjekt ausbreiten und mit der richtungsabhängigen Schallgeschwindigkeit skalieren. Die ermittelte Schallgeschwindigkeitsverteilung kann dann verwendet werden, um die lokale Wanddickenbestimmung für die Anisotropie zu adaptieren. T2 - 6. Since the 1960´s with the development of glass lasers, and more recently, within the search for efficient W-LEDs, sensors and solar converters, this class of materials has experienced extreme research progress. In order to tailor a material for such applications, it is very important to understand and characterize optical properties such as refractive index, transmission window, absorption and emission cross sections, quantum yields, etc. These properties can often be tuned by appropriate compositional choice and post-synthesis processing. In this lecture we will discuss the optical properties of glasses and glass ceramics, relevant to that end. T1 - Holistic, reliable and practical Characterization Framework for Graphene Family Materials, a correlated approach including Imaging based techniques N2 - ACCORDs is an Horizon Europe project working in the development of an imaging-based characterization framework (ACCORDs framework) for the holistic correlative assessment of Graphene Family Materials (GFMs) as a representative of 2D nanomaterials (NMs) to assess and predict 2D NMs health and environmental risks. The ACCORDs framework will operationalise safe and sustainable by design (SSbD) strategies proposed in past or ongoing H2020 projects or within OECD by correlating low-, medium-, and high-resolution physico-chemical-biological imaging-based methods with non-imaging methods in a tiered approach. ACCORDs will deliver the ACCORDs framework and user guidance, new imaging-based characterisation methods, reference in vitro tests, new reference 2D NMs for different matrices, a new minimum information reporting guideline for FAIR data sharing and reuse of images as well as an atlas with reference images for diagnostics of compromised safety of GFMs/GFM products. The new guidelines and standard proposals will be submitted to standardisation bodies to allow creation of regulatory ready products. The novelty of ACCORDs is in translating the principles of medical imaging-based diagnostics to 2D material hazard diagnostics. ACCORDs will accelerate industrial sectors in the area of aviation, marine construction, drone production, flexible electronics, photovoltaics, photocatalytics and print inks-based sensors. The value ACCORDs proposes to the graphene industry are practical, easy, imaging-based tools for GFM quality monitoring next to the production line with a possibility to be correlated with advanced highresolution imaging characterization methods in case hazard i.e. deviation from controls (benchmark values) are diagnosed. The ACCORDs framework and tools will contribute to the European Green Deal by addressing the topic: “Graphene: Europe in the lead” and to a new European strategy on standardization, released on 2nd February, 2022.
