An external magnetic field is applied in part of the system such that it permeates the channel and is characterized by a spatially varying magnetic field, i.e., the gradient of the magnetic field is nonzero. The beads are superparamagnetic; hence they can reach high level of magnetization in the presence of a magnetic field, and this magnetization disappears when the field is zero. Therein lies the attractiveness of these microbeads and the potential for applications because their motion can be controlled using an external magnetic field. The motion is governed by several factors, including the magnetic force acting on microbeads (particles), the drag force due to viscosity, the interaction between particles and the fluid, as well as the interaction between particles themselves. For a single particle case, the trajectory of the motion is determined by balancing the drag and magnetic forces acting on the particle, a calculation that in general requires numerical integration. For a system consisting of an ensemble of interacting particles, several regimes of motion dominated by one of the factors are identified. Of particular interest are the systems dominated by the large number of particles in the ensemble, i.e., high particle concentration, in which cases the wake influences the flow downstream. This effect is qualitatively investigated by considering the Navier-Stokes equation with and without the magnetic force contribution. All organisms must protect themselves from the harmful effects of light such as UV radiation, ROS accumulation, heat, and desiccation. Finally, light qualities and quantities can be used for decision making, timing and as guide for directed growth when they are sensed and transduced into intracellular signals. Botrytis cinerea and other plant pathogens infecting the sun-exposed parts of the plant must cope with the high light conditions the host plant seeks. Further they experience an altered light spectrum (‘green gap’) when they colonize shaded parts of the plant; it is depleted for blue and red light that is absorbed by the plant chlorophyll and enriched for green and far-red light that is reflected or transmitted by the plant tissue. As these ambient light conditions trigger the shade avoidance response in the plant, the pathogens may trigger their own ‘shading response’ such as the upregulation of virulence determinants and inoculum production. B. cinerea maintains a highly sophisticated light signaling machinery that senses different light qualities to trigger a variety of responses, that are protection, morphogenesis, positive and negative tropisms, and entrainment. These characteristics render B. cinerea a valuable model to enlighten the role of light in parasitic fungus-plant interactions and beyond. The vegetative mycelium – the core of all infection and developmental programs – is not visibly pigmented and thus considered to be sensitive to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the vegetative hyphae have a very limited half-life and are usually restricted to the invasive growth phase in which they are protected from light by the plant tissue. Fast colonization of host tissues and by this proper nutrient acquisition enables the rapid formation of long-lasting reproduction structures (melanized conidiophores with conidia, sclerotia) on the surfaces of rotted plant tissues. Depending on the light and temperature conditions, conidiation or sclerotial development is initiated. The plant pathogen Botrytis cinerea (Leotiomycetes) has a highly sophisticated photosensory and signalling system that helps to avoid light and to locate susceptible hosts. Nowadays, processing rates of up to m^2/min are enabling new industrial applications in medicine, optics, tribology, biology, etc. Depending on the specific type of LIPSS, their structural sizes typically range from several micrometers down to less than 100 nanometers – far beyond the optical diffraction limit – while their orientations exhibit a clear correlation with the local polarization direction of the laser radiation. Different milling parameters are known to affect the mechanisms and rates of product formation: milling frequency, milling time, filling degree of the milling jar, ball diameter and vessel size, degree of milling ball filling, and material of jars. The increasing interest in mechanochemistry is contrasted by a limited mechanistic understanding of mechanochemical reactivity and selectivity. Control over ball milling transformations is needed before the transformative potential of mechanochemical processing can be realized. Different analytical methods and their combinations have been developed for the time-resolved in situ monitoring of mechanochemical transformations, including powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, NMR, Raman spectroscopy, and thermography. Here we will discuss our recent results investigating the formation of polymorphic cocrystals thereby elucidating the influence of milling parameters (solvent, temperature, time) and reaction sequences on the formation mechanism and kinetics. For the mechanochemical chlorination reaction of hydantoin normalizing the kinetic profiles to the volume of the milling ball showed clearly that milling reaction kinetics are conserved. Here physical kinetics dominate reaction rates in a ball-milling transformation. Attempting to interpret such kinetics in purely chemical terms risk misinterpreting the results. Our results indicate that time-resolved in situ investigations of milling reactions offer a new approach to tune and optimize mechanochemical processes. As a result of continuous and prolific use, mainly in aviation firefighting foams, thousands of industrial and military installations have been found to contain contaminated soil, groundwater and surface water. Furthermore, because of the continuous contamination through PFAS containing commercial products, effluents and sewage sludge from WWTPs have been shown to be an important source of PFAS discharge into the aquatic environment. In the last few years, legacy PFAS (≥C4) have been found in various environments, including soil, water and wastewater, and their environmental pathways have been partly described. Several long-chain PFAS species, and their respective salts are considered as persistent organic pollutants by the United Nations Stockholm Convention. These pollutants have been linked to altered immune and thyroid function, liver disease, lipid and insulin dysregulation, kidney disease, adverse reproductive and developmental outcomes, and cancer. A significant shift in the chemical industry towards production of short (C4-C7) and ultrashort (C1-C3) alternatives was observed in response to recently intensified regulations and restrictions on the use of long-chain (≥C8) PFAS. PFAS analysis in environmental samples is currently mainly done by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This efficient method is conducted in a targeted fashion analyzing a small subset of PFAS. The US EPA method for analysis of PFAS using LC-MS/MS for example currently lists 40 PFAS (≥C4). However, to get a better overview of the amount of “total PFAS,” sum parameter methods like total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay and methods based on combustion ion chromatography (CIC) are in development. CIC results in data regarding the sum of absorbable organic fluorine (AOF) or extractable organic fluorine (EOF), which can also quantify other organically bound fluorine compounds such as fluorinated pesticides and pharmaceutical. Moreover, non-target and suspect screening mass spectrometry can be used to identify novel emerging PFAS and partly unknown fluorinated compounds in environmental samples. Furthermore, to analyze ultrashort PFAS (C1-C3), supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) are available, but further research is needed to develop reliable and accurate methods to quantify several ultrashort PFAS in environmental samples. They represent a (quasi-)periodic modulation of the surface topography in the form of a linear grating and are typically formed in a “self-ordered” way in the focus of a laser beam. Thus, they are often accompanying laser material processing applications. The structural sizes of LIPSS typically range from several micrometers down to less than 100 nanometers – far beyond the optical diffraction limit – while their orientations exhibit a clear correlation with the local polarization direction of the laser radiation. From a theoretical point of view, a controversial debate has emerged during the last decades, whether LIPSS originate from electromagnetic effects (seeded already during the laser irradiation) – or whether they emerge from matter-reorganization processes (distinctly after the laser irradiation). From a practical point of view, however, LIPSS represent a simple and robust way for the nanostructuring of solids that allows creating a wide range of different surface functionalities featuring applications in optics, tribology, medicine, energy technologies, etc. While the currently available laser and scanner technology already allows surface processing rates at the m^2/min level, industrial applications of LIPSS are sometimes limited by the complex interplay between the nanoscale surface topography and the specific surface chemistry. This typically manifests in difficulties to control the processing of LIPSS and in limitations to ensure the long-term stability of the created surface functions. This presentation reviews the currently existent theories of LIPSS. A focus is laid on the historic development of the fundamental ideas behind the LIPSS, their corresponding mathematical descriptions and numerical implementations, along with a comparison and critical assessment of the different approaches. Moreover, some unsolved scientific problems related to LIPSS are identified and the pending technological limitations are discussed. Time-resolved in situ investigations of milling reactions (Figure 1) provide direct insights into the underlying mechanisms. We recently introduced different setups enabling in situ investigation of mechanochemical reactions using synchrotron XRD and XAS combined with Raman spectroscopy and thermography. The presented setup allows the detection of crystalline, amorphous, eutectic, and liquid intermediates. Furthermore, the chemical composition of the reaction mixture was found to be directly correlated with changes in the temperature profile of the reaction. The resulting deeper kinetic and thermodynamic understanding of milling processes is the key to future optimization of mechanochemical syntheses. In this contribution, we will discuss our recent results investigating the formation of (polymorphic) cocrystals and coordination polymers. Our results indicate that time-resolved in situ investigations of mechanochemical processes are key for tuning and optimizing mechanochemical syntheses allowing to unleash the potential of mechanochemistry for a green materials design. At BAM, we aim to facilitate the integration of research data management (RDM) strategies during the whole research cycle from the creation and standardized description of materials datasets to their publication in open repositories. To this end, we present the BAM Data Store, a central system for internal RDM that fulfills the heterogenous demands of materials science and engineering labs. The BAM Data Store is based on openBIS, an open-source software developed by the ETH Zurich that has originally been created for life science laboratories but that has since been deployed in a variety of research domains. The software offers a browser-based user interface for the digital representation of lab inventory entities (e.g., samples, chemicals, instruments, and protocols) and an electronic lab notebook for the standardized documentation of experiments and analyses. To investigate whether openBIS is a suitable framework for the BAM Data Store, we carried out a pilot phase during which five research groups with employees from 16 different BAM divisions were introduced to the software. The pilot groups were chosen to represent a diverse array of domain use cases and RDM requirements (e.g., small vs big data volume, heterogenous vs structured data types) as well as varying levels of prior IT knowledge on the users’ side. Overall, the results of the pilot phase are promising: While the creation of custom data structures and metadata schemas can be time-intensive and requires the involvement of domain experts, the system offers specific benefits in the form of a simplified documentation and automation of research processes, as well as constituting a basis for data-driven analysis. In this way, heterogeneous research workflows in various materials science research domains could be implemented, from the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials to the monitoring of engineering structures. In addition to the technical deployment and the development of domain-specific metadata standards, the pilot phase also highlighted the need for suitable institutional infrastructures, processes, and role models. An institute-wide rollout of the BAM Data Store is currently being planned. However, there is little evidence of dust-derived P-containing minerals in soils. Here we studied P forms along a well-described climatic gradient on Hawaii, which is also a dust deposition gradient. Soil mineralogy and soil P forms from six sites along the climatic gradient were analyzed with bulk (X-ray diffraction and P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure) and microscale (X-ray fluorescence, P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure, and Raman) analysis methods. In the wettest soils, apatite grains ranging from 5 to 30 μm in size were co-located at the micro-scale with quartz, a known continental dust indicator suggesting recent atmospheric deposition. In addition to colocation with quartz, further evidence of dust-derived P included backward trajectory modeling indicating that dust particles could be brought to Hawaii from the major global dust-loading areas in central Asia and northern Africa. Although it is not certain whether the individual observed apatite grains were derived from long-distance transport of dust, or from local dust sources such as volcanic ash or windblown fertilizer, these observations offer direct evidence that P-containing minerals have reached surface layers of highly-weathered grassland soils through atmospheric deposition. In order to make optimal use of hydrogen as an energy carrier, the infrastructure for hydrogen storage and transport in particular, must meet high technical safety standards. The indispensable basis for such safety assessments are the material properties, which must be evaluated under operating conditions that are as real as possible. The conventional method for the assessment of the material properties in gaseous hydrogen is conducted by testing materials in high-pressure hydrogen gas in a pressure vessel (autoclave). It is an established method that allows to perform common standardized tests such as tensile, fatigue and crack growth tests under varying hydrogen conditions. However, this method is complex and entails high costs due to extensive safety regulations. The hollow specimen technique is a more efficient test method, which can be used to assess the mechanical properties of materials under high-pressure hydrogen gas. The procedure is conducted by enclosing high-pressure gas into a hole along the axis of the tensile test specimen. Recently, this method has been successfully performed at pressures up to 1000 bar and over a wide range of temperatures. Due to the low hydrogen volume needed, this method requires minimal safety regulation; therefore, the costs are reduced when compared to the conventional autoclave technique. This method is now in a standardization process, which has been initiated by Japan as a new working package in ISO (TC 164/SC 1/WG 9). The following contribution presents preliminary results obtained testing common grades of metastable austenitic stainless steel. For this purpose, the mechanical properties and fracture surface of solid and tubular specimens were assessed and compared using slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) test as part of the preliminary work at the Fraunhofer IWM. In a similar way, pipeline steels evaluated under hydrogen atmospheres using the geometry adapted by BAM will be presented. Fluorine detection is enabled upon the addition of a molecule forming agent – Ga turned out being the most sensitive one. Furthermore, the injection as well as temperature program was optimized, and appropriate solid phase extraction (SPE) phases were identified for PFAS extraction. However, due to the increasing consumption of metals and corresponding waste production, an elevated release of metals from buildings and consumer goods into the environment takes place. Furthermore, metals in direct contact with the environment undergo corrosion processes which leads also to a release of metals into the (aquatic) environment. Besides this immediate metal release, the lifespan of products/buildings are substantially reduced – hence unnecessary economic costs arise. Thus, research in this regard is needed within the force field of metal/material  environment. However, to evaluate the environmental impact of materials as well as developing “safe” materials, new analytical methods are highly needed. The increasing interest in mechanochemistry is contrasted by a limited mechanistic understanding of mechanochemical reactivity and selectivity. Control over ball milling transformations is needed before the transformative potential of mechanochemical processing can be realized. Different analytical methods and their combinations have been developed for the time-resolved in situ monitoring of mechanochemical transformations, including powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, NMR, Raman spectroscopy, and thermography. Here we will discuss our recent results investigating the formation of polymorphic cocrystals thereby elucidating the influence of milling parameters (solvent, temperature, time) and reaction sequences on the formation mechanism and kinetics. For the mechanochemical chlorination reaction of hydantoin normalizing the kinetic profiles to the volume of the milling ball showed clearly that milling reaction kinetics are conserved. Here physical kinetics dominate reaction rates in a ball-milling transformation. Attempting to interpret such kinetics in purely chemical terms risk misinterpreting the results. Dies steht im Gegensatz zu den immer komplexer werdenden Verbundwerkstoffen und Strukturen in der Mineralbaustoffindustrie. Die manuelle Sortierung birgt viele Risiken und Gefahren für das ausführende Personal und basiert lediglich auf offensichtlichen, visuell erkennbaren Unterschieden zur Trennung. Eine automatisierte, sensorgestützte Sortierung dieser Baustoffe könnte diese Praxis ergänzen oder ersetzen, um die Verarbeitungsgeschwindigkeit, die Recyclingquoten, die Sortierqualität und die gesundheitlichen Bedingungen zu verbessern. Ein gemeinsames Projekt von Partnern aus Industrie und Forschungseinrichtungen nähert sich dieser Aufgabe, indem es die Kombination von Laser-induzierter Breakdown-Spektroskopie (LIBS) und VIS/NIR-Spektroskopie untersucht und testet. Durch die gemeinsame Verarbeitung der Informationen soll die Sortierqualität verschiedener Materialien wie Beton, Hauptmauerwerksbaustoffe, organische Bestandteile usw. deutlich verbessert werden. Darüber hinaus könnten Verunreinigungen wie SO3-haltige Baustoffe (Gips, Porenbeton usw.) erkannt und getrennt werden. Wir stellen aktuelle Fortschritte und Ergebnisse der Entwicklung eines Prüfstands vor, der LIBS mit NIR-Spektroskopie und visueller Bildgebung kombiniert. The circularity is still low so that enhanced use of secondary building material is required to close loops. Three different secondary building materials are discussed based on exemplary research results: construction and demolition waste (C&D waste), soil-like material and incineration bottom ash (IBA). Focus was laid on the environmental compatibility of the materials examined mainly by standardized leaching tests. C&D waste was investigated after a wet treatment using a jigging machine, soil-like material and IBA were characterized with respect to their material composition. The environmental compatibility in particular was studied using standard leaching tests (batch tests and column tests). It was concluded that soil-like material can mostly be utilized even when the precautionary limit values set are exceeded by a factor of less than 2. For C&D waste the fine fraction below 2 mm and the content of brick material is problematic. IBA fulfills quality level HMVA-2 following German regulation. Higher quality levels of utilization might be achievable with better treatment technologies. Ensuring their sustainable and safe use in hydrogen technologies is a key factor in the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy. This requires extensive materials qualification, however, most of the accepted, and standardised test methods for determining the influence of gaseous hydrogen on metallic materials describe complex and costly procedures that are only available to a very limited extent worldwide (e.g., autoclave technique). In den letzten Jahren wurden an der BAM positive Ergebnisse beim ultraschallunterstützten Fräsen (USAM) von schwer spanbaren Werkstoffen wie z.B. Ni-/Co-Legierungen oder Eisenaluminid für den Leichtbau erzielt aber auch die Finishbearbeitung von schweißtechnisch generierten Bauteilen (AM) bspw. aus FeNi36 konnte hinsichtlich erreichbarer Werkzeuglebensdauer sowie Oberflächenintegrität zur Verbesserung der Komponentensicherheit beitragen. Die mittels USAM erzeugten Oberflächen erscheinen homogener und weisen weniger Defekte infolge des Materialabtrags auf, was sich ebenfalls in verringerten Rauheitskennwerten abbildet. Durch die geringere thermo-mechanische Belastung der Bauteiloberfläche sind Eigenschaftsdegradationen zusätzlich reduziert. Besonders großes Zukunftspotenzial besitzt das ultraschallunterstütze Fräsen durch die Erzeugung von erwünschten Druckeigenspannungen bis unter die Bauteiloberfläche, was auf die oszillierende Wirkung der Werkzeugschneide - vergleichbar mit einem Strahlprozess - zurückzuführen ist. Druckeigenspannungen tragen maßgeblich zur Risssicherheit hochbelasteter Komponenten bei wie sie bspw. in Turbinen vorzufinden sind und können somit zum Leichtbau und zur Ressourceneffizienz beitragen. Different milling parameters are known to affect the mechanisms and rates of product formation: milling frequency, milling time, filling degree of the milling jar, ball diameter and vessel size, degree of milling ball filling, and material of jars. The increasing interest in mechanochemistry is contrasted by a limited mechanistic understanding of the mechanochemical reactivity and selectivity. Different analytical methods and their combinations have been developed for the time resolved in situ monitoring of mechanochemical transformations, including powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray adsorption spectroscopy, NMR, Raman spectroscopy, and thermography. Here we will discuss our recent results investigating the formation of (poly-morphic) cocrystals[1,3], metal-organic compounds, and salts, thereby elucidating the influence of milling parameters and reaction sequences on the formation mechanism and kinetics. For the mechanochemical chlorination reaction of hydantoin normalizing the kinetic profiles to the volume of the milling ball showed clearly that milling reaction kinetics are conserved. Here physical kinetics dominate reaction rates in a ball-milling transformation. Attempting to interpret such kinetics in purely chemical terms risk misinterpreting the results. Our results indicate that time-resolved in situ investigation of milling reactions offer a new approach to tune and optimize mechanochemical processes. As a result of continuous and prolific use, mainly in aviation firefighting foams, thousands of industrial and military installations have been found to contain contaminated soil, groundwater and surface water. While liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is commonly used technique to characterize targeted PFAS in environmental samples, there are more than 10,000 different PFAS known, which have various headgroups and properties. Therefore, several analytical techniques are available to analyse various groups or pools of PFAS or “all” PFAS as a sum parameter. Current decontamination strategies of PFAS-burdened soils mainly consist of adsorption methods using adsorbents for fixation of PFAS in the ground. A second option is the utilization of a “pump and treat” process, cycling polluted soils through a washing plant leading to the concentration of the pollutants in the fine fraction. Both approaches are cost-intensive and not intended for the direct decomposition of all PFAS contaminants. Hence, there is a great demand for innovative developments and chemical treatment technologies, dealing with new strategies of tackling the PFAS problem. Previously, mechanochemical treatment of polychlorinated organic compounds in soils showed an efficient dechlorination. Thus, we investigated mechanochemical treatment of PFAS contaminated soils with various additives in a ball mill and analyzed the PFAS defluorination with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), respectively, as well es the fluoride mineralization by ion chromatography (IC) and fluorine K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy.
