Different milling parameters are known to affect the mechanisms and rates of product formation: milling frequency, milling time, filling degree of the milling jar, ball diameter and vessel size, degree of milling ball filling, and material of jars. The increasing interest in mechanochemistry is contrasted by a limited mechanistic understanding of the mechanochemical reactivity and selectivity. Different analytical methods and their combinations have been developed for the time resolved in situ monitoring of mechanochemical transformations, including powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray adsorption spectroscopy, NMR, Raman spectroscopy, and thermography. Here we will discuss our recent results investigating the formation of (poly-morphic) cocrystals[1,3], metal-organic compounds, and salts, thereby elucidating the influence of milling parameters and reaction sequences on the formation mechanism and kinetics. For the mechanochemical chlorination reaction of hydantoin normalizing the kinetic profiles to the volume of the milling ball showed clearly that milling reaction kinetics are conserved. Here physical kinetics dominate reaction rates in a ball-milling transformation. Attempting to interpret such kinetics in purely chemical terms risk misinterpreting the results. Our results indicate that time-resolved in situ investigation of milling reactions offer a new approach to tune and optimize mechanochemical processes. N2 - Historical plaster formulations represent an underexplored avenue for understanding advanced materials engineering in premodern cultures. In this contribution, we investigate two distinct historical gypsum plasters, Gach-e Koshteh from 14th century Persia and Gesso Sottile from 15th century Italy, both of which were essential for architectural decoration and fine art. By replicating these methods in a laboratory setting, we explore how traditional artisans manipulated gypsum microstructures without any additives, to optimize surface and mechanical properties for specific artistic and functional outcomes. Gach-e Koshteh employs a labor-intensive process involving kneading and mechanical treatment during hydration of bassanite to gypsum. This results in a plaster with a platelet-like crystal morphology and a pronounced alignment of the {010} faces, leading to a hydrophilic surface ideal for water-based decoration. These platelets form a compacted structure, reducing porosity while providing a smooth, workable surface for wall paintings. In contrast, Gesso Sottile relies on a slow recrystallization process in a large excess of water, yielding needle-like gypsum crystals that minimize hydrophilic surface area. This makes Sottile more suitable for oil-based panel paintings or as a substrate for gilding. Our study applies a combination of wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to reveal the microstructural and surface properties of these historical plaster recipes. We demonstrate that the mechanical treatment in the Koshteh method leads to a denser, better-packed plaster with enhanced wettability due to the increased exposure of hydrophilic crystallographic planes. Meanwhile, the extended treatment time and high dilution in the Sottile recipe promote larger, loosely packed needle crystals that create a more hydrophobic surface. These findings not only highlight the ingenuity of historical materials engineering but also provide valuable insights for modern restoration and preservation techniques. By understanding the role of microstructure in the durability and surface properties of historical plasters, we can improve the conservation of gypsum-based cultural heritage objects. This research also demonstrates the potential for sustainable materials engineering practices rooted in historical techniques, as these additive-free formulations exhibit long-lasting performance with minimal environmental impact. Based on covalent adaptive networks (CANs), vitrimers exhibit dynamic bon d rearrangements upon external stimuli, endowing them with unique properties such as shape memory, self healing, and recyclability. These pioneering materials combine the robust mechanical behavior of classic lightweight thermosets with the inherent mallea bility of thermoplasts, making them highly attractive for next generation sustainable material applications. This study explores the intricate interplay between the nature of CANs and the macroscopic properties of newly developed vitrimers. The investigated material is a bio based vitrimer consisting of a glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE) resin and a vanillin derived imine hardener (VA). This system represents an ideal biobased substitute for fossil derived epoxy resins and leverages a catalyst free imine metathesis mechanism to enable recycl ability. Despite the advantages of vitrimers, the molecular mechanisms governing their recyclability, particularly the dynamic exchange reactions, remain poorly understood. To gain deeper insights into these mechanisms, this study employs a combination of broadband dielectric spectroscopy , neutron scattering, mechanical spectroscopy, calorimetry, and dynamic thermal investigations. A systematic approach utilizing both standard and innovative characterization techniques is essential to unravel the synergistic relationship between molecular behavior, structure, and thermomechanical performance. T2 - 15. Nanoparticle function, interaction with biological species, and environmental fate are largely determined by surface functionalities. Reliable, reproducible, and standardized surface characterization methods are therefore vital for quality control of NPs, and mandatory to meet increasing concerns regarding their safety. Also, industry, regulatory agencies, and policymakers need validated traceable measurement methods and reference materials. Industry, e.g., must comply with various regulations, including the chemicals´ regulation REACH (2006/1907) and cosmetic products regulation (2009/1223), depending on the use. Therefore, standardization organizations such as the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) as well as industrial stakeholders, European Medicine Agency (EMA), and the nanosafety community responsible for guidelines for nanomaterial (NM) regulation like the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have expressed needs for standardized methodologies to measure NP surface chemical properties. Despite these needs, methodologies for determining NP surface properties, including the amount, chemical composition, and homogeneity of surface functionalities and coatings are largely non-standardized. Specifically, validated quantitative procedures for the measurement of thickness and composition of nanoparticle coatings and other surface functionalities are needed. Suitable methods for determining surface functionalities on ligand-stabilized core and core/shell NPs include advanced techniques such as traceable quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (qNMR) as well as X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS) and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), and simpler optical and electrochemical methods. The latter less costly methods are often used by SMEs, e.g., for quality control. To validate methods, establish measurement uncertainties, test reference materials, and produce reference data, international interlaboratory comparisons (ILC) on NP surface functionalization measurements are required. These needs have been addressed by us in two interlaboratory comparisons, that will be presented. In addition, the European metrology project SMURFnano will be briefly presented involving 12 partners from different National Metrology Institutes, designated institutes, and research institutes, two university groups as well as one large company and one SME producing NPs. In order to make optimal use of hydrogen as an energy carrier, the infrastructure for hydrogen storage and transport in particular, must meet high technical safety standards. The indispensable basis for such safety assessments are the material properties, which must be evaluated under operating conditions that are as real as possible. The conventional method for the assessment of the material properties in gaseous hydrogen is conducted by testing materials in high-pressure hydrogen gas in a pressure vessel (autoclave). It is an established method that allows to perform common standardized tests such as tensile, fatigue and crack growth tests under varying hydrogen conditions. However, this method is complex and entails high costs due to extensive safety regulations. The hollow specimen technique is a more efficient test method, which can be used to assess the mechanical properties of materials under high-pressure hydrogen gas. The procedure is conducted by enclosing high-pressure gas into a hole along the axis of the tensile test specimen. Recently, this method has been successfully performed at pressures up to 1000 bar and over a wide range of temperatures. Due to the low hydrogen volume needed, this method requires minimal safety regulation; therefore, the costs are reduced when compared to the conventional autoclave technique. This method is now in a standardization process, which has been initiated by Japan as a new working package in ISO (TC 164/SC 1/WG 9). The following contribution presents preliminary results obtained testing common grades of metastable austenitic stainless steel. For this purpose, the mechanical properties and fracture surface of solid and tubular specimens were assessed and compared using slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) test as part of the preliminary work at the Fraunhofer IWM. In a similar way, pipeline steels evaluated under hydrogen atmospheres using the geometry adapted by BAM will be presented. The use of UCNPs in fluorescent sensors allows non-invasive, highly sensitive, and selective detection methods, which are particularly beneficial in environments requiring minimal interference and high precision for analytes that can range from metal ions to biomolecules. In this lecture, an overview and the state of the art will be given, accompanied by examples of our recent contributions to key areas such as chronic disease diagnostics, bacterial sensing, and multifunctionally responsive nanoplatforms: (1) An Enhanced Luminescence Lateral-Flow Assay (ELLA) designed for rapid (< 15 min) and early detection of acute kidney injury biomarkers in urine samples, using a commercial cell phone camera, will be presented. The platform is based on Er³⁺- and Tm³⁺-doped UCNPs whose emissions intensities are 40-fold enhanced by an Au-coated mesoporous silica shell, enabling the accurate detection of KIM-1 and NGAL biomarkers with detection limits as low as 0.23 ng/mL; (2) Also, a multifunctional nanoplatform that combines Tm³⁺-doped UCNPs with a Cu(I) complex for applications in oxygen sensing, optical thermometry, and emission colour tuning will be presented. The platform utilizes Luminescent Resonance Energy Transfer (LRET) to achieve efficient energy transfer, enabling red emission from the Cu(I) complex while allowing the use of the UCNP’s original emissions for thermometry. The dual functionality allows sensitive O2 detection and temperature measurements, with relative sensitivities of up to 1% K⁻¹; (3) The critical challenge of rapid bacterial detection and differentiation was addressed by the development of a novel UCNP-based sensor. By functionalizing UCNPs with the antibiotics - vancomycin for Gram-(+) and polymyxin-B for Gram-(-), and using Au nanoparticles as intensity quenchers, the sensor leverages a ratiometric "turn-on" mechanism for selective detection of the bacteria, through changes in the green/red (G/R) ratio for Er-UCNP@PEG4-Van, and blue/red (B/R) ratio for Tm-UCNP@PEG4-Poly. By this approach, differentiation was possible over a wide concentration range of bacteria (0.05 to 5 x 105 CFU/mL) with high correlation with actual bacterial counts (r = 0.99 for S. aureus, r = 0.91 for E. coli); (4) Recently, we have demonstrated a water dispersable ratiometric pH-nanosensor based on host-guest interaction of Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped UCNPs functionalized with b-cyclodextrin (b-CD) and a pH-responsive nitrobenzoxadiazol dye modified with adamantane (NBD-Ad). The sensor shows a ratiometric emission response (blue/red) over a pH range of 8.0 – 11.0 with high reproducibility, excellent reusability and selectivity, even in the presence of interferents. Together, the presented examples highlight the versatility and potential of UCNPs to develop novel sensors, offering measurable advances in diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and beyond. However, the laser processing may be accompanied by the generation of unwanted X-rays. Small doses per laser pulse can accumulate to significant dose levels at high laser pulse repetition rates. Moreover, burst mode processing increases the X-ray dose rates compared to single pulse use and results in X-ray photon energies up to 40 keV for tungsten targets. For laser treatment of human teeth, clearly noticeable X-ray skin dose rates can be found. Additionally, biomolecules can be detected indirectly by using metal-tagged antibodies. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is, besides the cells, an important component of all body tissues. The macromolecular network of the ECM consists of structural proteins (e.g., collagen, elastin) and proteoglycans composed of highly negatively charged carbohydrates, the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which are covalently linked to a protein core. Many diseases, including inflammatory processes and tumors, are associated with characteristic ECM changes at an early stage. Recent studies have shown that contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which are based on gadolinium containing chelate complexes or iron oxide nanoparticles, can bind themselves to ECM components. Various milling parameters, including milling frequency, time, filling degree of the milling jar, ball diameter, vessel size, degree of milling ball filling, and material of jars, are recognized influencers on the mechanisms and rates of product formation. Despite the growing interest in mechanochemistry, there exists a gap in understanding the mechanistic aspects of mechanochemical reactivity and selectivity. To address this, diverse analytical methods and their combinations, such as powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, NMR, Raman spectroscopy, and thermography, have been developed for real-time, in situ monitoring of mechanochemical transformations. This discussion centers on our recent findings, specifically investigating the formation of (polymorphic) cocrystals and metal-organic frameworks. Through these studies, we aim to unravel the impact of milling parameters and reaction sequences on the formation mechanism and kinetics. Meeting future demand will therefore require next-generation LIBs—an ambition that hinges on a deeper understanding of the degradation processes that limit performance and lifetime. Because LIBs are chemically and physically complex systems, capacity fade stems from multiple degradation phenomena that act concurrently as cells age.4 In particular, the formation and growth of interfacial layers at the electrodes during repeated charge–discharge cycling make a substantial contribution to component degradation.5 Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry (GD-MS) offers depth-resolved elemental and isotopic analysis of battery electrodes and has proven to be a powerful tool for tracking degradation in LIBs. Using a ASTRUM Swift GD-MS spectrometer, we identified degradation pathways in both cathodes and anodes across various cell chemistries, linking electrochemical behavior with changes in structure and elemental distributions. They represent a (quasi-)periodic modulation of the surface topography in the form of a linear grating and are typically formed in a “self-ordered” way in the focus of a coherent laser beam. Thus, they are often accompanying laser material processing applications. The structural sizes of LIPSS typically range from several micrometers down to less than 100 nanometers – far beyond the optical diffraction limit – while their orientations exhibit a clear correlation with the local polarization direction of the laser radiation. From a theoretical point of view, a controversial debate has emerged during the last decades, whether LIPSS originate from electromagnetic effects (seeded already during the laser irradiation) – or whether they emerge from matter-reorganization processes (distinctly after the laser irradiation). From a practical point of view, however, LIPSS represent a simple and robust way for the nanostructuring of solids that allows creating a wide range of different surface functionalities featuring applications in optics, tribology, medicine, energy technologies, etc. The presentation provides an overview of current theories on LIPSS and the quest to achieve ever smaller surface nanostructures. The historical development of the fundamental ideas behind LIPSS is presented, together with experimental approaches that make it possible to distinguish between the various LIPSS formation scenarios. Time-resolved experimental methods are required to investigate the dynamics of their formation. The presentation focuses on ultrafast time-resolved optical (pump-probe) techniques that can be used for localized point measurements or microscopic imaging, utilizing the reflection, diffraction, or coherent scattering of the probe radiation at the emerging LIPSS, while simultaneously capturing information about rapid melting, ablation, and solidification phenomena. However, given the sub-micrometric spatial periods of LIPSS, their analysis using optical radiation employed in far-field techniques remained a challenge. Therefore, short wavelengths of the probe beam in the UV range or even below are required to overcome the diffraction limit imposed in the optical spectral range. Fourth-generation light sources, namely short-wavelength (XUV or X-ray) short-pulse free-electron lasers (FELs), offer new and fascinating possibilities for resolving laser-induced structure formation on surfaces in the sub-micrometer to nanometer range and in time domains from picoseconds to several nanoseconds with a resolution in the sub-picosecond regime. On laser-irradiated semiconductor surfaces, this unique spatio-temporal resolution enables the detection of early signs of coherent/plasmonic electromagnetic scattering effects, followed by the excitation of hydrodynamic capillary waves – providing new insights into the above-mentioned debate. Recent experiments at the European XFEL used fs-time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (fs-SAXS) and even fs-time-resolved grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (fs-GISAXS), combined with grazing-incidence diffraction (fs-GID), to reveal the dynamics of the formation of nanometric LIPSS on metals. For decades, dislocation activity has been treated as a homogeneous, smooth continuous process that relies on well-average quantities. However, it is now recognized that plasticity can be determined by long-range correlated and intermittent collective dislocation activity, known as avalanches. These abrupt plastic fluctuations often exhibit pure power-law scaling or truncated power-law scaling, which indicates at least some degree of scale-free dislocation behavior. Intriguingly, such statistical signatures can persist across scales exceeding those of the material’s microstructure, raising the question of what relationship there may be between structure and long-range correlated dislocation activity that underlie power-law scaling. In this talk, we address this question by highlighting examples in which a transition from scale-free to scale-dependent plastic deformation is observed either due to changing external testing conditions (stress-state or temperature) or by tuning the microstructure. In particular, we will focus on the details of the temperature-driven change, that demonstrates how scale-free intermittent flow in body-centered cubic Nb is progressively quenched out with decreasing temperature. The plastic response of Nb is shown to be bimodal across the studied temperature regime, with conventional thermally-activated smooth plastic flow coexisting with sporadic bursts controlled by athermal screw dislocation activity, thereby violating the classical notion of temperature-dependent screw dislocation motion at low temperatures. An abrupt increase of the athermal avalanche component is identified at the critical temperature of the material. We combine the experimental observations with 3D dislocation dynamics simulations, identify a possible origin to athermal screw activity, and discuss the co-existence scale-free and scale-dependent plasticity. An analytical proxy is needed to report these reactions and accelerate product development, quality control, and recycling. Here, we demonstrate that subtle shifts in the natural 7Li/6Li ratio accurately record the two decisive stages of cell aging, solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and field-driven aging, which can be detected using multi-collector ICP-MS. Because Li is easily stripped from digested electrodes or electrolyte in a one-step cation-exchange column, high-purity solutions reach the spectrometer in minutes. A streamlined MC-ICP-MS run yields a δ7LiLSVEC precision of 0.4 ‰, enabling dozens of battery fractions to be analyzed per day. Applying the workflow to LiCoO2 coin cells as models, sampled from pristine to 700 cycles, reveals a clear isotopic narrative. During the first ≈45 cycles, 7Li leaves the LiCoO2 lattice, dissolves into the electrolyte, and is locked in the SEI on graphite, driving cathode δ7Li from +8 to –10 ‰ and raising the anode to +13 ‰ while capacity drops by 10 %. After the interphase matures, the electric field takes over: the lighter 6Li migrates faster to the anode, 7Li accumulates in the contracting Li1-xCoO2 lattice, and the bulk separation factor rises to α≈1.045 by 700 cycles. The δ7Li curve flattens roughly 70 cycles before capacity falls to 80%, providing an early warning of end-of-life. Isotopic gradients scale linearly with impedance growth, SEI thickness, and crack density confirmed by LA-ICP-MS mapping, FIB-SEM, XANES, and EXAFS. Although each data point requires one cell, lithium-isotope fractionation provides direct, element-specific, and structural fatigue insight unavailable from non-destructive tests. Especially industries with high relevance for the future like transport and energy benefit from optimized designs and novel materials. However, a reliable in-situ quality assurance for metal AM is still missing while process optimization is slow. This directly hinders the huge potential of metal AM technologies. A promising method to counteract this issue is the investigation of the emitted thermal radiation. It is optimal for monitoring and understanding the thermal history of the high-temperature AM process. The thermal history holds virtually all information about the properties and the quality of the manufactured components. The thermal information is also highly valuable for tuning and validating numerical simulations to gather further insights into the process. Despite this importance, the usage of thermal radiation in commercial AM machines is only marginal (like simple pyrometry or long-time exposure for optical tomography (OT) at a single wavelength). Based on this deficit and potential, this work gives an overview of the research in division “8.3 Thermographic Methods” at the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in Berlin, Germany. Different wavelengths of the thermal radiation are investigated: the visible range (VIS), the short-wave infrared (SWIR), and the mid-wave infrared (MWIR) with their respective optimal field of application. Focus lies on laser powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M), but directed energy deposition with laser beam (DED-LB/M) is investigated as well. The presented research is performed not only on commercial AM machines, but also on an in-house developed PBF-LB/M research system specifically designed for sensor testing. This ensures an exciting mélange of applied research for industrial applications, and fundamental research for process understanding and validation. Therefore, a crucial contribution to industrial and scientific insights of metal AM is given. A low-pressure glow discharge plasma is applied in this system, which ‘sputters’ and promotes the sample atoms to a higher energy state. When the atoms return to their ground state, they emit light with characteristic wavelengths, which a spectrometer can detect. Thus, GD-OES combines the advantages of ICP-OES with solid sampling techniques, which enables it to determine the bulk elemental composition and depth profiles. However, direct solid sampling methods such as glow-discharge spectroscopy require reference materials for calibration due to the strong matrix effect. Reference materials are essential when the accuracy and reliability of measurement results need to be guaranteed to generate confidence in the analysis. These materials are frequently used to determine measurement uncertainty, validate methods, suitability testing, and quality assurance. In addition, they guarantee that measurement results can be compared to recognized reference values. Unfortunately, the availability of certified reference materials suited to calibrate all elements in different matrix materials is limited. Therefore various calibration strategies and the preparation of traceable matrix-matched calibration standards will be discussed. Machine learning is an essential component of the growing field of data science. Through statistical methods, algorithms are trained to make classifications or predictions, uncovering key insights within data mining projects. Therefore, it was tried in our work to combine GD-OES with machine learning strategies to establish a new and robust calibration model, which can be used to identify the elemental composition and concentration of metals from a single spectrum. For this purpose, copper reference materials from different manufacturers, which contain various impurity elements, were investigated using GD-OES. The obtained spectra information are evaluated with different algorithms (e.g., gradient boosting and artificial neural networks), and the results are compared and discussed in detail. However, the lack of specific algorithms and software tools presents a major bottleneck for analyzing data from host-virus samples. For example, accurate species- and strain-level classification of a priori unidentified organisms remains a very challenging task in the setting of large search databases. Another prominent issue is that many existing solutions suffer from the protein inference issue, aggravated because many homologous proteins are present across multiple species. One of the contributing factors is that existing bioinformatic algorithms have been developed mainly for single-species proteomics applications for model organisms or human samples. In addition, a statistically sound framework was lacking to accurately assign peptide identifications to viral taxa. In this presentation, an overview is given on current bioinformatics developments that aim to overcome the above-mentioned issues using algorithmic and statistical methods. The presented methods and software tools aim to provide tailored solutions for both discovery-driven and targeted proteomics for viral diagnostics and taxonomic sample profiling. Materials data are generated, transferred, and introduced at each step along the complete life cycle of a component. A reliable materials data space is therefore crucial in the digital transformation of an industrial branch. Therefore, the “Innovation Platform MaterialDigital (PMD) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), aims to develop a sustainable infrastructure for the standardized digital representation of materials science and materials engineering. With its partners (KIT, Fraunhofer IWM, FIZ, Leibnitz IWT, BAM, MPIE), the PMD is committed to build up a materials science data space. To achieve this the PMD provides a prototypical infrastructure for the digitalization of materials implemented by decentralized data servers, standardized data schemas and digital workflows. Following the FAIR principles, it will promote the semantic interoperability across the frontiers of materials classes. Standards, methods, and tools developed within the platform are deployed and consolidated within the context of currently near 20 BMBF-funded academic and industrial research consortia and made available to the material science community in general. In this context scientific workflows represent a major focus area, represented within the platform by the workflow frameworks pyiron and SimStack. In consequence, the platform is building up a digital library in form of a workflow store along with common standards for the definition and representation of digital workflows. In this phase trust is essential for the commercial success of these products, between the individual partners of the product value chain, and between the manufacturer and the consumer. Standards are an important tool for building this trust. The first steps have been taken in standardisation, e.g. in terminology and the characterization of raw materials. But there are still some challenges to overcome such as bringing the standards to the factory floor and real-world products. For the validation of new protocols and methods there is a need of reference data and materials. But not only the measurement should be reproducible, the whole analytical workflow from sample storage and preparation to data analysis should be reproducible. Another important issue is the establishment of credible structure-activity relationships which allows the prediction of the properties of the GR2M, but also of the biological activity including the safety for the human health and the environment. Such relationships can be used for read-across and grouping and can facilitate the regulation of the advanced materials. In addition, 2D materials beyond graphene should also be considered and can benefit from the experience from the standardisation of graphene and graphene oxide. What uncertainty do we add by our human diversity in thoughts and approaches, and is this significant compared to the uncertainty from the instrumental measurement factors? After our previous Round Robin on data collection, we know that many laboratories can collect reasonably consistent small-angle scattering data on easy samples. To investigate the next, human component, we compiled four existing datasets from globular (roughly spherical) scatterers, each exhibiting a common complication, and asked the participants to apply their usual methods and toolset to the quantification of the results (https://lookingatnothing.com/index.php/archives/3274). Accompanying the datasets was a modicum of accompanying information to help with the interpretation of the data, similar to what we normally receive from our collaborators. More than 30 participants reported back with volume fractions, mean sizes and size distribution widths of the particle populations in the samples, as well as information on their self-assessed level of experience and years in the field. While the Round Robin is still underway (until the 25th of April, 2022), the initial results already show significant spread in the results. Some of these are due to the variety in interpretation of the meaning of the requested parameters, as well as simple human errors, both of which are easy to correct for. Nevertheless, even after correcting for these differences in understanding, a significant spread remains. This highlights an urgent challenge to our community: how can we better help ourselves and our colleagues obtain more reliable results, how could we take the human factor out of the equation, so to speak? In this talk, we will introduce the four datasets, their origins and challenges. Hot off the press, we will summarize the anonymized, quantified results of the Data Analysis Round Robin. (Incidentally, we will also see if a correlation exists between experience and proximity of the result to the median). Lastly, potential avenues for improving our field will be offered based on the findings, ranging from low-effort yet somehow controversial improvements, to high-effort foundational considerations. The theoretical treatment of such structures is, however, challenging since their voltammetric profile is a convolution of the time-dependent current with an inherently random mass-transfer function. Since the latter quantity has no analytical solution, the classical convolutive techniques cannot be applied. Therefore, simulations have been based on severe simplifications of the diffusion space [1,2] or were performed by means of digital simulation. Unfortunately, the latter approach becomes computationally prohibitive when a large and/or highly resolved, three-dimensional diffusion space needs to be considered. To mitigate these problems, we introduce the digital simulation, deconvolution, convolution (DSDC) algorithm, consisting of four successive steps [3]. Firstly, the three-dimensional image of the electrode under investigation is extracted via micro X-ray computed tomography (µ-CT) or atomic-force microscopy (AFM). Subsequently, the purely mass-transfer controlled current of this spatial template is generated by means of digital simulation. In the third and fourth steps, the mass-transfer function is extracted for a set of discrete points in time by numerical deconvolution and finally used for classical convolutive simulations. In this manner, any simplification of the diffusion domain becomes obsolete and the advantages of digital simulation and convolutive modelling are most favourably combined. Finally, this DSDC-algorithm provides an interdisciplinary connection of ex-situ imaging and in-situ electrochemistry which results in excellent agreement of simulated and experimentally acquired data. This lecture illuminates the increasing prevalence of fraudulent scientific work (e.g. faked data, manipulated images, paper mills) with plenty of examples and sources. The second section expands on the driving forces that caused this phenomenon to emerge, largely driven by pressures from management, peers and the researcher themselves. The third section expands on methods and tools that can be used to educate and arm oneself against this phenomenon. The 2023 edition includes new examples of larger fraudulent bodies of work emerging, and the problems posed by the arrival of LLMs. T2 - Lecture series on "Information management" CY - Berlin, Germany DA - 27.11.2023 KW - Research fraud KW - Scientific misconduct KW - Paper mills KW - Metrics-driven science KW - Image manipulation KW - Faked research PY - 2023 AN - OPUS4-58925 LA - eng AD - Bundesanstalt fuer Materialforschung und -pruefung (BAM), Berlin, Germany ER - TY - CONF A1 - Rethmeier, Michael A1 - Artinov, Antoni A1 - Meng, Xiangmeng A1 - Bakir, Nasim A1 - Üstündag, Ömer A1 - Bachmann, Marcel A1 - Gumenyuk, Andrey T1 - The bulging effect and its relevance in high power laser beam welding N2 - The present work deals with the recently confirmed widening of the weld pool interface, known as a bulging effect, and its relevance in high power laser beam welding. A combined experimental and numerical approach is utilized to study the influence of the bulge on the hot cracking formation and the transport of alloying elements in the molten pool. A technique using a quartz glass, a direct-diode laser illumination, a high-speed camera, and two thermal imaging cameras is applied to visualize the weld pool geometry in the longitudinal section. The study examines the relevance of the bulging effect on both, partial and complete penetration, as well as for different sheet thicknesses ranging from 8 mm to 25 mm. The numerical analysis shows that the formation of a bulge region is highly dependent on the penetration depth and occurs above 10 mm penetration depth. The location of the bulge correlates strongly with the cracking location. The obtained experimental and numerical results reveal that the bulging effect increases the hot cracking susceptibility and limits the transfer of alloying elements from the top of the weld pool to the weld root. At BAM, we aim to facilitate the integration of research data management (RDM) strategies during the whole research cycle from the creation and standardized description of materials datasets to their publication in open repositories. To this end, we present the BAM Data Store, a central system for internal RDM that fulfills the heterogenous demands of materials science and engineering labs. The BAM Data Store is based on openBIS, an open-source software developed by the ETH Zurich that has originally been created for life science laboratories but that has since been deployed in a variety of research domains. The software offers a browser-based user interface for the digital representation of lab inventory entities (e.g., samples, chemicals, instruments, and protocols) and an electronic lab notebook for the standardized documentation of experiments and analyses. To investigate whether openBIS is a suitable framework for the BAM Data Store, we carried out a pilot phase during which five research groups with employees from 16 different BAM divisions were introduced to the software. The pilot groups were chosen to represent a diverse array of domain use cases and RDM requirements (e.g., small vs big data volume, heterogenous vs structured data types) as well as varying levels of prior IT knowledge on the users’ side. Overall, the results of the pilot phase are promising: While the creation of custom data structures and metadata schemas can be time-intensive and requires the involvement of domain experts, the system offers specific benefits in the form of a simplified documentation and automation of research processes, as well as constituting a basis for data-driven analysis. In this way, heterogeneous research workflows in various materials science research domains could be implemented, from the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials to the monitoring of engineering structures. In addition to the technical deployment and the development of domain-specific metadata standards, the pilot phase also highlighted the need for suitable institutional infrastructures, processes, and role models. An institute-wide rollout of the BAM Data Store is currently being planned.
