Most notable examples of ZIFs used for that purpose include ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 etc. Particularly ZIF-8 with its high surface area, defined pore structure and tunable particle size is widely utilized as a platform material to prepare so-called metal- and nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C) catalysts with M= Co, Fe, Ni, Zn etc., which are an emerging class of catalyst materials and consist of nitrogen-doped porous carbon matrix hosting atomically distributed active metal sites.[1, 2] The active sites in M-N-Cs ideally have M-N4 coordination resembling to metal centres in macromolecules such as porphyrins and phthalocyanines.[3] Most representative examples of M-N-Cs include Fe-N-Cs, Co-N-Cs and Ni-N-Cs etc. which are showing promising activities for a variety of electrochemical reactions e.g. oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The structures of M-N-C catalysts are quite complex and require a fine balance between morphological, electronic, and chemical properties to reach optimal electrocatalytic activities. In this talk, I will present our activities on (i) preparation of phase-pure M-N-C catalysts derived from ZIF-8 via active-site imprinting [4, 5] and highlight the benefits of our strategy to achieve high density of active sites and enhanced electrochemical performance levels [6] and (ii) feasibility of using gas physisorption techniques as a new approach to quantify active sites in M-N-Cs. The challenges of maximizing active site utilization and eliminating unfavourable mass-transport characteristics faced by ZIF-8 derived M-N-Cs in electrochemical energy devices e.g. fuel cells will also be briefly discussed. While experiments are performed in accordance with the IAEA regulations for selected drop scenarios, Finite-Element-Method (FEM) simulations are used to predict the most damaging case and to investigate additional drop positions. BAM as competent authority in Germany has performed different investigations of a welding seam for a typical large transport package made of A508 forged steel, where the bottom plate is welded to the cylindrical shell. The package has a mass of approx. 120 t. Results of physical drop tests with a full-scale model and accompanying preliminary FEM simulations are presented to determine the decisive stresses in the welding seam. A drop test only represents one set of a package and test parameters. A further parameter analysis is considered to account for allowable variations of packaging properties (e.g. resulting from the manufacturing process) and, based on IAEA requirements, the temperature dependence of the material behaviour. The results of the stress analyses from the drop test and the simulation form the basis and provide the input parameters for a fracture mechanics analysis. In addition to the IAEA specifications, further standards are taken into account for an in-depth investigation, see R6 [1], BS 7910 [2] and API 579-1/ASME FFS1 [3]. All the above-mentioned standards require a manufacturer-specific defect analysis with respect to size and position. Both result from the welding process and the following heat treatment regime. The maximum defect sizes are ensured with non-destructive test methods (such as ultrasonic or particle methods) as integral part of the manufacturing process of the welding seam. Another important parameter in the welding process is the residual stress (secondary stress). The combination of the primary and secondary stress determines the total stress in the welding seam. The most damaging case of the welding seam is determined and evaluated with help of the above-mentioned standards and taking into account the IAEA requirements with respect to defect sizes, material properties, primary and residual stress, yield strength etc. T2 - PATRAM 22 - The International Symposium on the Packaging and Transportation of Radioactive Materials CY - Juan-Les-Pins, France DA - 11.06.2023 KW - Welding KW - Fracture Mechanics KW - Transport Package PY - 2023 AN - OPUS4-57695 LA - eng AD - Bundesanstalt fuer Materialforschung und -pruefung (BAM), Berlin, Germany ER - TY - CONF A1 - Mair, Georg W. Regarding their safety behavior, the main challenge of LIB-cells remains the thermal runaway (TR) process. In situ/operando investigations of the TR on commercial cells is possible with radiographic and computer tomographic measurements. Nonetheless, high resolution visualization of the TR persists as a challenge due to the high progression speed of the TR-process itself. Generally, performing abuse tests at cryogenic temperatures allows to slow down or even prevent the TR. Nevertheless, not all abuse methods are suitable for TR investigations at low temperatures. Nail penetration is an appropriate option, however, contains numerous unknown parameters and therefore suffers regarding reproducibility. Herein, a self-developed high precision nail-penetration-setup is introduced, approaching the necessary mechanically reproducibility with controlled temperatures down to -190°C. The setup allows the preparation of critically abused, however, at cryogenic temperatures stable LIB-cells. These cells were controlled rethermalized to room temperature during synchrotron x-ray computer tomography (SXCT) with a pixel size up to 0.7 μm. During this measurement, the temperature and voltage of the cell is monitored allowing the visualization of the initial internal cell reactions. This study reveals the relation between internal reactions and cell voltage. Finally, the developed set-up enables in-depth analysis of thermal runaway behavior down to material level for various commercial battery cells in the future. A promising method to alleviate the greenhouse effect and thereby forming value-added chemicals or syngas as an energy carrier, is through the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). In this work, a bioelectrotechnological approach is developed, in which the CO2RR reaction products (CO and H2) are directly fed to bacteria (acetogens), who use them as “reduction equivalents” to further metabolize CO2 to valuable carbon compounds. Therefore, a bio-electrochemical system consisting of a bioreactor coupled to a CO2 electrolysis cell will be established. Currently, scarce catalysts such as Ag and Au are used as for the CO2RR which may hamper the use of decentral CO2 conversion technology for cost reasons. The technological viability of the bacteria-assisted electrolysis depends on the usage of efficient, biocompatible, and selective electrocatalysts prepared from inexpensive precursors. Porous transition metal and nitrogen co-doped carbons (M-N-Cs) have emerged as precious-metal free electrocatalysts for the direct electrochemical reduction of CO2 into CO and are excellent candidates for scale-up and deployment in technological applications. Furthermore, Co/Ni/Zn functioning as the catalytically active sites will be used, as they are expected to depict non-bactericidal properties in contrast to Cu and Ag catalysts. The non-bactericidal property could e.g., allow for application within the hybrid device (bio-electrochemical system), without the need to separate bacteria and cathode catalyst. The MNCs with the most promising electrocatalytic activity and selectivity will be evaluated in abiotic conditions in the hybrid bio-electrochemical reactor system. In this work, a bio-electrocatalytical system (BES) consisting of a bioreactor coupled to a CO2 electrolysis cell is established. CO2 is first electrochemically converted to CO in electrolysis cell which is then directly fed to bacteria (acetogens) to further metabolize it to valuable carbon compounds such as acetate. The objective of this study is to develop cost-efficient, biocompatible and high activity electrocatalysts that can selectively convert CO2 to CO. Porous nitrogen-doped carbons containing atomically dispersed Ni and Co (Ni or Co-N-Cs) are prepared by active-site imprinting approach. First, synthesis of Mg- or Zn-N-C was carried out through pyrolysis of precursors in a salt melt followed by exchange with Ni or Co. N2-sorption porosimetry of the materials reveal a micro-mesoporous structure with high surface areas (> 1000 m2 g-1) and a mass-transport enabling pore system. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) reveal the existence of single atom sites with no formation of nanoparticles. A variety of Ni-N-Cs and Co-N-Cs were tested for CO2R activity in a rotating disc electrode (RDE) setup, showing high activity (Tafel slopes range from 77 – 130 mV/decade) and selectivity towards CO2R versus the competing HER. Before operation in the BES, first tests were performed in a single cell. Significantly increased current was detected in the CO2R test in CO2-saturated electrolyte vs. in N2 -saturated electrolyte indirectly proving formation of carbon monoxide (CO). Transfer of the electrolysis cell operation into the BES proved to be successful. For biotic operation, the BES was inoculated with Clostridium ragsdalei. Partial pressures pCO reached a maximum of 5.7 mbar and pH2 was 2.7 mbar after 30h. The reduction of partial pressures is interpreted as the consumption of the gases by C.ragsdalei. We report a specific exponential growth rate of 0.16 h-1, acetate formation rate of 1.8 mg L-1 h-1 and an acetate concetration of 0.103 g L-1 corresponding to acetate formation rate of 0.73 mmol d-1.In this work we successfully demonstrated an integrated bio-electrocatalytic system (BES) to convert CO2 into value-added chemicals. While CV can be used to study the kinetics of electron transfer reactions [1], DVA can visualise phase transitions by correlating the opencircuit voltage and exchanged charge [2]. Recently, DVA receives an increasing attention in the battery community for characterising full-cell setups. In contrast, CV is less prominent for batteries, yet the prevalently used technique for ex-situ characterisations of novel electrode materials in half-cell configuration. In this study, we have investigated the overdischarge process of LiFePO4 pouch cells – which is usually presumed to result in a decomposition of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and a corrosion of the copper current collector – in a complementary electrochemical analysis which uses both, CV and DVA in full-cell mode. For this purpose, CV consisting of three low sweep-rate scans and DVA of three low current rate cycles was performed. Degradation was traced by successive CV/DVA sequences during, pre- and post-overdischarge which allowed to pinpoint the features, the limitations, and similarities of both techniques. In this manner, we demonstrate that CV can successfully identify the dynamics of degradation processes, indicating that an irreversible side reaction starts at cell voltages below 0.55 V. For this reason, this study underlines that CV can be effectively used for spotting dynamic degradation mechanisms which are hardy seen in DVA. This may pave the way for further analysis which can be used for fingerprinting characteristic degradation. T2 - 124. Under current regulations, a mostly conservative strategy is employed, restricting the usage time of hydrogen pressure vessels without providing information on the real remaining lifetime. During the service life, pressure vessels are inspected periodically. However, no established method that can provide continuous monitoring or information on the remaining safe service life of the vessel. In this paper, we propose a sensor network for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of hydrogen pressure vessels where data from all sensors are collected and centrally evaluated. Specifically, we integrate three different SHM sensing technologies namely Guided Wave ultrasonics (GW), Acoustic Emission testing (AT), and distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (FOS). This integrated approach offers significantly more information and could therefore enable a transition from costly and time-consuming periodic inspections to more efficient and modern predictive maintenance strategies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based evaluation. This does not only have a positive effect on the operational costs but enhances safety through early identification of critical conditions in the overall system in real-time. We demonstrate an experimental set-up of a lifetime test where a Type IV Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessel (COPV) is investigated under cyclic loading instrumented with AT, FOS, and GW methods. We acquired data from the sensor network until the pressure vessel failed due to material degradation. The data collected using the three different SHM sensor technologies is planned to be evaluated individually, using data fusion, and AI. In the future, we aim to integrate the measurement setup into a hydrogen refueling station with the data stream implemented into a digital signal processing chain and a digital twin. In case a gap exists between the contents and the lid, it can result in a delayed impact of the content onto the lid system during a vertical drop test. The kinematic energy transmitted to the lid in such cases can be significant due to the stiffness of the impact, leading to high stresses in the bolts compared to a configuration without a gap. In the past, IRSN and BAM have individually investigated the modelling of the delayed impact phenomenon. BAM has examined the effects of the delayed impact phenomenon for spent fuel packages in a comparative analysis between experiments and simulations, which was presented at SMIRT 2013. Meanwhile, IRSN’s has developed a simple numerical tool that can quickly evaluate the influence of various parameters before considering a more complex finite element numerical calculation. This tool was presented at PATRAM 2022. In 2023, BAM and IRSN (now ASNR – French nuclear safety and radiation protection authority) decided to jointly pursue their study on the delayed impact phenomenon, incorporating damping effects, by developing new insights and techniques. To this end, a controlled and simplified set of experiments needs to be developed to calibrate and validate the simplified model. These experiments will record velocity, position of parts, strain and accelerations. The parameters and configurations necessary for the development of the mock-up, as well as the placement and quantity of sensors, are determined through extensive pre-calculations using both complex finite element models and the simplified approach. A key challenge involves precisely controlling the drop of the mock-up to accurately replicate the theoretical contact and damping conditions. Advanced sensor technologies will be employed to acquire reliable and sufficient data. The tests are designed and conducted at BAM's TTS drop test facility in collaboration with ASNR. The leak tightness of the DPC and resulting containment is one of the most important aspects. Additional encapsulations are required for damaged spent nuclear fuel (DSNF) to guarantee safe handling and a separate tight closure. Due to the general design of DPCs for standard fuel assemblies should special requirements be considered for the design of the encapsulations for DSNF to ensure the loading in existing package designs. The absence of a replaceable sealing in the tightness barrier is the main difference for the encapsulations for damaged spent nuclear fuel. Instead, they are welded shut with a lid. The leak tightness of the encapsulation shall be proven in the design approval process for all transport conditions. This is especially valid for accident conditions of transport, where high internal impact forces may occur. BAM as German competent authority is responsible for the safety assessment of mechanical and thermal design, retention of radioactive material and quality assurance aspects of manufacturing and operation. BAM carried out a comprehensive safety assessment concerning the mechanical package design. As there are no representative standards for verifying the leak tightness of a welded lid, two approaches were being pursued. Established German standards may be used for verifying the leak tightness of a weld - but limited to low stresses. Therefore, physical tests were required for higher impact loads. Representative drop tests and highly sensitive leakage tests were performed. The paper presents an overview of the containment assessment by BAM and points out the main findings for the design of welds regarding leak tightness. Both verification procedures are described, on one hand with German standards for lower loads and on the other hand with physical tests for higher impact loads. The leak tightness of the encapsulation weld could be approved based on leakage tests and a corresponding evaluation for all transport conditions. Damaged LIBs pose the risk of a so-called thermal runaway (TR), a strongly exothermic reaction with the formation of gases, flames or even an explosion of the battery. The relevance of this issue is underlined by the number of fires that have occurred at recycling centers in the recent past. One solution to circumvent a TR is given by thermal passivation (i.e. deep-freezing) of batteries. Practically, this method is already used and temperatures below -60 °C are considered safe. In this talk, the parameter battery safety is revisited under the premise of heat-transfer and activation energies. At first, mechanically initiated TRs are compared for different cell chemistries, cell sizes, and temperatures, revealing that the threshold of thermal passivation is vastly system specific. Combining these results with differential scanning calorimetry underlines that the hazard potential of a battery is not necessarily eliminated by freezing the electrolyte. Instead, the potential for a TR needs to be regarded as a multivariant function of energy content, cell-voltage, chemical stability, and electrokinetic performance. Since the latter parameter is known to be vastly temperature-dependent, it is addressed in detail by a low-temperature electrokinetic study of different types of LIB. In this context, it is demonstrated that batteries are kinetically active even at temperatures well below the freezing point of the electrolyte and that their instantaneous power output is resembled sufficiently via Arrhenius´ law. To get a detailed understanding of cell-specific heat release during and prior to a TR, data from accelerated rate calorimetry will be discussed for various cell types at different state of charge and state of health. This will eventually provide a conclusive picture how a cell-internal TR-propagation takes place and which parameters need to be deliberately tuned under the premise of battery safety. T2 - 26. The theoretical treatment of such structures is, however, challenging since their voltammetric profile is a convolution of the time-dependent current with an inherently random mass-transfer function. Since the latter quantity has no analytical solution, the classical convolutive techniques cannot be applied. Therefore, simulations have been based on severe simplifications of the diffusion space [1,2] or were performed by means of digital simulation. Unfortunately, the latter approach becomes computationally prohibitive when a large and/or highly resolved, three-dimensional diffusion space needs to be considered. To mitigate these problems, we introduce the digital simulation, deconvolution, convolution (DSDC) algorithm, consisting of four successive steps [3]. Firstly, the three-dimensional image of the electrode under investigation is extracted via micro X-ray computed tomography (µ-CT) or atomic-force microscopy (AFM). Subsequently, the purely mass-transfer controlled current of this spatial template is generated by means of digital simulation. In the third and fourth steps, the mass-transfer function is extracted for a set of discrete points in time by numerical deconvolution and finally used for classical convolutive simulations. Early reports on such materials date back to the 1960´s, when Jasinski pioneered the research based on tetrapyrrolic phthalocyanine macrocycles which were inspired by natural transition metal porphyrin complexes present in enzyme active-sites. For decades, the selective synthesis of these catalysts was complicated by the formation of side phases due to the harsh reaction conditions facilitating side phase formation. In 2018, we introduced a mild procedure, which is conservative toward the carbon support and leads to atomically dispersed Fe-N4 site formation at temperatures as low as 80 °C in a wet-chemical step, essentially decoupling the preparation of the nitrogen-doped carbon (NDC) backbone from the preparation of the active-sites. The key concept therein is the so-called active-site imprinting into the NDC backbone using pyrolytic template ion reactions, allowing for high concentrations of N4 sites resulting in more than 3 at.% of Fe in atomically dispersed phase. Using the same precursor that is used for the preparation of phthalocyanines, we were able to produce tetrapyrrolic NDCs as a materials platform to synthesize atomically-dispersed single-site Fe-N-Cs comprising tetrapyrrolic FeN4 complexes by ion-exchange reactions. The tetrapyrrolic Fe-N-C derivatives are highly active and extraordinary selective electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in acidic. The mere tetrapyrrolic NDC are likewise highly active ORR-catalysts in alkaline. The well-defined and homogeneous active-site structure allows to quantify the intrinsic catalytic activity of the materials in acid and base, reveal insights into the electrocatalytic mechanism and to reveal distinct degradation mechanism upon storage and electrochemical cycling. Herein, the general synthetic strategy will be discussed mainly based on Zn-ion templating towards Fe-N-C catalysts. The catalytic active-sites will be discussed regarding structure and potential as fuel cell catalyst. Hydrogen can be well integrated into the electrical energy infrastructure, and its production and use is free of direct GHG emissions. However, tanks are needed for worldwide storage and transportation, which need to be further developed and up-scaled. In the EU-funded NICOLHy project, BAM investigates a novel insulation concept based on Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIP) that enables the safe, cost- and energy-efficient storage of large quantities of LH2. Such large-scale LH2 storage technology is necessary to build tanks with capacities of 40.000 m³ to more than 200.000 m³ of LH2, as it is in application for LNG today. However, new design concepts are needed because the currently available technologies used in small and medium storages today are not suitable for up-scaling. The main problems prohibiting up-scaling are the long production time due to the process chain, the low failure tolerance, and the spherical shape of the tank, which reduces the payload in technical applications by up to 50% compared to other shapes. The novel concept will change these conditions by a system which is modular, open-form, time-and cost-efficient during production, operation and service, multi-failure tolerant and applicable for onshore and offshore applications. The NICOLHy consortium is ideally suited for this ambitious project. It brings together experts from the fields of thermodynamics, cryogenics, marine, chemistry, process, and safety engineering. Thereby, NICOLHy will accelerate the integration of hydrogen into the European energy economy and industry, which is necessary to be in line with the European Green Deal and to build trust of society in the policy and the technology. Liquefied gases of great importance to the energy transition are Liquefied Hydrogen (LH2) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which can be liquefied at temperatures below 160°C. Systems for storing these gases typically must be overpressure resistant and require thermal super insulations (TSI) to hold cryogenic conditions and minimize boil-off losses from evaporation. TSI with vacuum and MLI or perlites are suitable for many applications involving LNG and LH2. Such systems are typically double-walled structures where the inner wall is in contact with the cryogenic liquefied gas. MLI or perlites are located in the gap between the inner and the outer wall, that is kept under vacuum conditions. This combination of insulations strongly reduces the heat transfer between the environment and the cryogenic liquefied gas. From an economic point of view the systems are well sophisticated. However, knowledge of the behavior of this kind of systems in a typical event such as a fire is limited, but necessary to evaluate the safety of the increasing number of applications. The objective of the research is to determine how TSI behaves at different fire temperatures during fire exposure and afterwards. Special attention is paid to changes in the heat flux, the material properties and vacuum state over time. For this purpose, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) studies have been carried out. In addition, a test rig was developed that allows testing of TSI at temperatures up to 1000°C under realistic integration conditions and subsequent analysis of the TSI samples. In the test rig the double-wall with vacuum and MLI or perlites inside is simulated. The fire conditions are simulated on one side of the double-wall by adjustable electrical heating elements. This process allows the implementation of repeatable heat flows of up to 100 kW/m². On the other side of the double-wall, cold or cryogenic conditions are simulated with a heat exchanger through which water or the vapor of liquid nitrogen (approx. -196°C) flows. The heat exchanger is also used to determine the heat flux through the double-wall. Thus, the test rig allows thermal loading and performance analysis of TSI samples at the same time. Compared to tests with real cryogenic systems, tests with this experimental setup have the advantage that, first, the instrumentation is easier to realize, and a higher repeatability is ensured. Second, the local heat flow can be determined over time, and the sample of a TSI can be taken non-destructively and thus analyzed. Third, the tests are less risky as well as time+ and material intensive, so that more tests and variants can be investigated with the same budget. Preliminary results obtained considering several types of MLI under vacuum show that all observed typs of MLI can be damaged under strong thermal loading. The damages observed were outgassing, melting, shrinkage, cracking, lump formation, and concomitant local loss of the MLI's function as a radiation shield. However, the study also shows that a damage does not always have an extreme effect on the insulating performance. Dual purpose casks are used for the packaging of the materials to ensure transportability at any time during long-term interim storage and fulfilling both requirements from interim storage as well as transport. Germany’s 2011 decision to phase out utilization of nuclear energy has led to a high demand for casks for decommissioning power plants as quickly as possible. Cask serial production will continue at a high level for the next few years. In the process, a system of quality assurance measures ensures that every cask reliably complies with design specification according the transport approval certificate and storage license. When the first casks were manufactured in Germany about 40 years ago, quality assurance was oriented towards pressure vessel and general nuclear manufacturing. The system was continuously adapted to the state of the art. In particular serial production, globalization of manufacturing and deep supplier chains had to be taken into account. The system of quality assurance measures applied today for cask manufacturing shall be presented here. The quality assurance measures can be categorized as system-related and design-related. With respect to transport regulations for example, they are independently approved and monitored by the competent authority BAM and its authorized inspection experts. The qualification of the applicant is reviewed first in the context of the design approval procedure and then periodically. The qualification of component and cask manufacturers is also checked at the start of manufacturing and then periodically. Before the start of manufacturing documents such as quality plans are pre-assessed. Manufacturing and inspection are then performed according to the pre-assessed documents. Cask manufacturing is completed by a final inspection before commissioning. Periodic inspections during operation ensure preservation of the properties specified in the approval certificate over package life time. The type and the time interval of periodic inspections depend on the use of the package. For transport after interim storage a system of specific tests and inspections is prescribed. Herein non-precious iron-coordinated nitrogen doped carbons (Fe-N-Cs) as well as metal-free nitrogen-doped carbons (NDCs) are very promising alternatives for Pt-based cathode catalysts. The early reports on the application of such materials date back to the 1960´s when Jasinski demonstrated that - similar to natural porphyrins - N-coordinated transition metal complexes can be active sites for the ORR.1 The preparation of Fe-N-Cs was strongly optimized over the years; still they typically remain with harsh reaction conditions that complicate the selective formation of active FeN4 sites. Until recently, the employment of pyrolytic temperatures was a dogma for the synthesis of FeN4 sites, however coming with unfavorable side reactions. To avoid those harmful side reaction a limit of maximum ≈3 wt.% of Fe (depending on the precursor) was reached, which was also limiting the progress in catalyst performance for this class of materials.2, 3 Since 2006 it was shown that nitrogen doped carbons (NDCs) act as an inexpensive and highly active non-metal catalyst in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).4 Both, NDCs and Fe-N-Cs nowadays show the potential to reach performances of practical need, where NDC seem to be promising only for alkaline conditions, while Fe-N-Cs show promise independent of the pH.5, 6 For both PGM-free catalysts, high performance requires advantageous porosity, which typically means high surface area and mass transport pores as well as the control over the chemistry of catalytically active sites. Results and Discussion My group is developing novel synthetic strategies e.g. using molten salts or molten acids as unconventional reaction medium for the preparation of carbons materials.7, 8 Carbon materials with tunable very high surface area of ~2800 m2 g-1 and pore volumes, up to four times as high as in commercial activated carbons, are obtained. Fig. 1: Scheme of the porogenesis mechanism for NDCs by phase separation in of molten salt carbonization (a) to obtain tunable high surface area and porous carbon materials with varying nitrogen content (b). It turned out that such NDCs synthesized in presence of Mg2+ or Zn2+ give rise to a high degree of pyridinic and pyrrolic sites and outstanding ORR activity in alkaline conditions. The salt cations Mg2+ or Zn2+ act as template ions, which results in tetrapyrrolic functional groups embedded into the carbon structure. Based on this, we recently introduced a mild procedure to synthesize Fe-N-C, which leads to active-site formation at low temperatures due to coordination of Fe ions to the tetrapyrrolic functional groups of NDCs.2, 3 Figure 2: Scheme of the Active-Site Imprinting Strategy. A pyrolytic template-ion reaction forms a tetrapyrrolic functional group within the carbon framework (first step). Exchange of the template ion T (with T=Mg2+ or Zn2+) with Fe results in tetrapyrrolic Fe-N-C. The synthesis strategy of active-site imprinting and transmetalation is decoupling the preparation of NDCs from the preparation of the active sites and therefore breaks with the dogma of Fe-N-Cs preparation, circumventing the limitation to 3 wt.% of Fe.9 After a thermal activation step the Fe-N-Cs derived from active site imprinting show very good performance of ORR in acidic conditions, both on the half-cell (rotating disc electrode) and full-cell (5cm2 PEM single cell) level. Figure 3: a) Rotating disk electrode measurements show the large increase in ORR activity and low amount of peroxide formed by exchange of Zn to Fe coordinated to tetrapyrrolic NDC, especially when followed by a second heat treatment. b) Single cell PEMFC H2-O2 tests show a peak power density above 0.4 W cm-2 at a catalyst loading of 2 mg cm-2. Active-site imprinting is currently used by many groups worldwide, successfully pushing the performance of Fe-N-Cs forward, with higher Fe loadings and improved porosities.10-12 Challenges are the moderate turnover frequency (0.24 e- s-1 at 0.8 VRHE) of tetrapyrrolic Fe-N4 sites, 13 and a moderate shelf-life of tetrapyrrolic Fe-N-Cs in atmospheric conditions.14 Besides improvements of electrode engineering and optimization of fuel cell management, an improved synthetic control, leading to more active and stable catalytic environments are needed to tackle the need of sustainable electrocatalysts for future energy conversion technology.15 T2 - International Conference on Materials and Systems for Sustainability (ICMaSS2023) CY - Nagoya, Japan DA - 01.12.2023 KW - PGM-free catalysts PY - 2023 AN - OPUS4-61937 LA - eng AD - Bundesanstalt fuer Materialforschung und -pruefung (BAM), Berlin, Germany ER - TY - CONF A1 - Karapanagiotis, Christos T1 - Structural health monitoring of hydrogen pressure vessels using distributed fiber optic sensing N2 - We report on distributed fiber optic sensing-based monitoring of hydrogen composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV) to simultaneously increase the operational lifespan and mitigate maintenance costs. Our approach represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first application of distributed fiber optic sensing for COPV Type IV monitoring, where the sensing fibers are attached to the surface, rather than integrated into the composite material. Specifically, we attach an optical fiber of 50 m to the pressure vessel's surface, covering both the cylindrical and dome sections. We note that our fiber optic sensing technique relies on swept wavelength interferometry providing strain information along the entire length of the optical fiber with high spatial resolution even at the millimeter scale. When the vessel is pressurized, the sensing optical fiber shows a linear strain response to pressure at every position along the fiber. After thousands of load cycles, the vessel finally fails with the optical fiber detecting and precisely localizing the damage in the vessel’s blind dome area. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of state-of-the-art signal processing methods and machine learning for advancing predictive maintenance. This could reduce the number of regular inspections, mitigate premature maintenance costs, and simultaneously increase the vessel’s remaining safe service life. We believe that the structural health monitoring of hydrogen pressure vessels with fiber optic sensors can enhance trust in hydrogen technology contributing to the energy transition in the future. While the engineering safety factors of the pressure vessels are kept high, the periodic inspection and the limited lifetime are making the application very costly considering manpower, time, money, and material waste. The development of an integrated structural health monitoring system can allow an easy transition from the current situation to cost-effective predictive maintenance. Hence, we propose to integrate three different SHM systems into hydrogen pressure vessels, namely guided wave ultrasonics, acoustic emission, and fibre optic sensing, to continuously monitor the condition and integrity. In this work, we evaluated the condition of a Type IV composite overwrapped pressure vessel using ultrasonic guided wave propagation. We mounted fifteen piezo-electric wafers on the composite cylinder by shaping three rings containing five sensors each. We acquired data from the sensor network following different boundary conditions with artificial damages on the selected locations. The data were evaluated with guided wave tomography techniques using ultrasonic features (amplitude, frequency, etc.) as well as artificial intelligence (AI). The results suggest that both traditional guided wave fusion techniques and AI-based characterization methods can detect artificial damages. In future work, it is planned to integrate acoustic emission and fibre optic sensing. Moreover, the measurement and the test results will be implemented into a digital twin to derive trends and make predictions on the damage propagation as well as the remaining useful lifetime. Yet, under accidental scenarios such as fire exposure, MLI can degrade rapidly—leading to increased heat ingress and potential hazards like BLEVE or jet fires. Activated carbons are increasingly considered also for electrochemical applications e.g. supercapacitors and metal-ion hybrid capacitors. Those devices usually employ activated carbon electrodes, where ions are stored by means of adsorption/desorption.[1] Meanwhile, in lithium-sulfur batteries, sulfur is loaded within activated carbon pores to confine insoluble intermediates.[2] The activation is normally proceeded in top-down or bottom-up strategies. Therein pore formation (porogenesis) occurs by reaction with steam, CO2, KOH, or the use of acidic agents. It is generally accepted, that the porogenesis mechanism is chemical leaching of carbon atoms. Recently, the sol-gel type synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon in molten acids was presented, questioning the general validity of a leaching activation mechanism.[3] The protocol using inorganic salt melts (MgCl2 or ZnCl2) and organic precursors additionally generated N-functionalities. Interestingly, it can be noticed that the imprinting cations play a crucial role towards chemical structure of nitrogen-doped carbon framework. The analogous phenomenon may be observed when using H3PO4 and H3BO3 agent via sol-gel chemistry.[4] Herein, the carbonization of mixtures of organic compound with H3PO4 and H3BO3 is investigated. Therefore, associated effects regarding the presence of P and B atoms within resulting nitrogen-doped carbons as well as the porogenesis mechanism are discussed. Essentially any electroanalytical experiment involving an electrode with a surface which is not perfectly smooth will be subjected to more or less severe effects of roughness. This includes any circumstance where electrodes are decorated with micro- or nanoparticles and is therefore relevant for a plethora of experimental scenarios. Since the roughness-related gain in surface area scales the reaction rate – and thus the current – it is an inherently non-straightforward task to assess intrinsic electrode kinetics from experimental data of rough structures. In other words, a significant overestimation of kinetic constants may arise when rough electrodes are employed and kinetics are analyzed under the assumption of perfectly planar surfaces. For this reason, it is fundamentally interesting to approach electrode roughness from a purely theoretical point of view, since surface roughness and kinetics can be tuned in a deliberate manner for separating their individual contributions. In this study, we propose a strategy for the simulation of the most common electroanalytical technique – cyclic voltammetry – at mesoscopically rough surfaces. For this purpose, our previously introduced digital simulation - deconvolution - convolution (DSDC) algorithm [1] is employed. By modifying, the Douglas--Gunn algorithm, which is used in the digital simulation step to operate on an arbitrarily incremented spatial grid, a high numerical resolution near the electrode/electrolyte boundary and a larger spatial discretization in the bulk of the electrolyte can be used. This provides a fine resolution of artifacts of surface roughness and efficiently utilizes computational power. As a consequence, simulations can be performed on real-space data of rough electrodes which is obtained from atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is demonstrated that for an ideally reversible reaction the effects of electrode roughness on the CV response are insignificant. In contrast, for practically relevant scenarios with electrochemically irreversible or quasi-reversible kinetics, the apparent rate constants are allegedly upscaled by the area-ratio Arough/Aplanar up to a certain threshold. Qualitatively, this manifests in a lower peak-to-peak separation without a distortion of the shape of the voltammetric profile. As soon as the surface profile becomes much deeper than wide, a distortion of the CV response occurs which is associated with an increasingly finite diffusion domain. This behavior is finally explained in terms of convolution-sums and mass-transfer functions and provides a quantitative interpretation of roughness effects. This contribution shows how an improvement in the measurement data situation can improve the significance and comparability of outdoor exposures. Photooxidative ageing is calculated using sample polymers for which the corresponding modelling data (Exposure Response Functions, ERF) is available. The mean square deviations are estimated, which result from using different spectral irradiances and different spectral sensitivities, both of the sensors and the polymers. It will be shown here how the significance of the irradiance values increases with increasing approximation of the spectral sensitivities of the sensor and polymer. Also, the mean square deviations are estimated, which result from using different activation energies and surface temperatures. A selection of different variables to describe the weathering exposure is created. The potential of either individual values or data pairs is evaluated in terms of significance or correlation to the calculated photooxidative ageing. Recording hourly data also enables subsequent evaluations of individual test specimens, adapted to the respective colour or to determine activation energies. An accumulated value, calculated from PIT-radiometer irradiance and a suited surface temperature, can provide a comparison of different outdoor exposures over different locations or years. Thus, a characterisation of the weathering exposure would be related to a reference spectral sensitivity (much closer to a polymer than that of a common UV radiometer), one reference activation energy, and different surface temperature scenarios with, on the one hand, graded solar absorptions (white / grey / black) and, on the other hand, different thermal couplings (coated metal / thick plastic). This results in three values each for plastic samples and coated metals (light / grey / dark). It will never be possible to accurately predict the weathering tests for individual samples (with their specific sensitivities), but the proposed approaches can go a long way towards the comparability of outdoor weathering exposures. Thus, the objective is to employ analytical methods to establish a link between the structure and the electrochemical attributes of HC materials. This has been a challenge, partly due to the non-stoichiometric nature of the sodium storage mechanism and the disordered structure of HCs. To address the challenges mentioned above, our approach is to explore whether a core-shell structure can separate sodium storage and SEI-formation. This way, we can investigate and fine-tune storage capacity and irreversible losses, independently. The strategy involves the synthesis of various porous carbon structures to serve as the core material and their combination with sodium-conductive structures to core-shell materials. Herein, we will present different synthesis routes towards tailor-made carbon core materials. Moreover, different coatings concepts will be introduced, and the electrochemical performance of the core and core-shell materials compared. To elucidate the storage mechanism, the results of advanced analytical methods such as operando NMR and -SAXS will be presented. Generally, these core-shell anodes promise to enable high capacities accompanied with low irreversible losses due to optimized SEI-formation. For an economically and ecologically desirable reuse of aged batteries in second-life applications, a guarantee for safe and reliable operation is urgently required. However, the assessment of the state of safety (SOS) is not straightforward, as multiple abuse cases, variables and interactions need to be considered [1]. Therefore, defining safety parameters and test procedures, as well as determining the SOS requires a plethora of aged cells to be tested. In this study, a novel method of greatly accelerating the ageing process of lithium-ion batteries is proposed. Overcharging and overdischarging are embedded in cyclic ageing, continuously employing a depth of discharge larger than 100 %. Different electrical abuse conditions (overcharge, overdischarge, high current rates) are applied on lithium-ion NMC and LFP pouch cells in a preliminary test series. In this manner, the cells are stressed until a cell failure or a thermal runaway is induced. Thus, the critical state in proximity to a cell failure is spotted for individual and combined stress parameters. Based on this knowledge, a test protocol for strongly accelerated ageing with cell-specific, abusive electrical parameters is developed. The aging dynamics under these critical conditions are monitored by systematic capacity, open circuit voltage and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. This enables an assessment of the degradation mechanisms induced by overdischarge and overcharge cycling. A special focus is set on the comparative assessment of the electrical behaviour, following conventional vs. greatly accelerated ageing. This novel method is suitable for providing cells with a defined SOH at a reasonable timescale. Furthermore, the results are of high relevance for the evaluation to which degree cyclic ageing can be accelerated without changing the characteristic degradation mechanisms of lithium-ion batteries. As background information details on the question how to choose a suitable salvage pressure receptacle (SPR) are provided. This leads to the need for deleting the volume limitation for SPRs and to the discussions in 2014 and 2016 on this issue. As an adequate substitution for deleting the volume limit for SPRs it is proposed to limit the pressure receptacles to be stored in by a maximum pressure-volume-value of 1.5 Mio bar-litres. After some explanations to standardisation projects currently also tackling this pV-limit, some risk-based safety criteria for a limitation are mentioned with the focus of the consequence level and the general avoidance of catastrophic worst case scenarios. However, the integrity of such tanks can be jeopardized by fire. In such a scenario, MLI materials degradation can occur, leaving the tank unprotected from the fire heat flux, with consequent rapid pressurization and a high risk of failure. This study presents an assessment of aluminum-based MLI for liquid hydrogen cryogenic tanks under fire exposure based on the estimation of the time to mechanical failure of the equipment. This is calculated through an innovative model that simulates the thermomechanical response of the tank, including the MLI thermal degradation and the pressure-relief valve (PRV) operation. The application to several case studies that consider a typical LH2 tank featuring a wide range of MLI configurations demonstrated the likelihood of failure in case of exposure to a hydrocarbon pool fire, providing also comprehensive insights into the impact of the insulation characteristics and operating conditions on the time to failure.
