T1 - Characterization of a THz SLM and its application for improved high resolution THz imaging N2 - Spatial light modulators (SLM) can be used for many applications, including imaging and beam steering. With the emergence of THz SLMs being able to control thousands of pixels, the aforementioned applications become feasible for the THz region. The degree of control that can be exerted with a SLM and in turn its usefulness directly depends on the light pattern it creates. The resulting light patterns can be quite different from the intended light patterns, due to systematic and random non-uniformities, especially for large THz wavelengths. Here we present results on the performance of a Germanium based THz SLM. These results enable the efficient application of Compressed Sensing techniques in THz SLM imaging settings. It seems important for performance demonstration trials - especially those including the underclad area - to use reflector types as close as possible to the real cracks to be detected. For different detection approaches, reflectors representing underclad cracks should have a reduced diffraction at the crack tip areas in order to check their potential to detect the indication based on surface reflections of the ultrasonic waves. T1 - The effects of intermittent unsaturated wetting on the release of constituents from construction demolition debris N2 - When used in highway applications, granular materials are submitted to changing environmental conditions. While column testing can provide a closer approximation to field percolation conditions than batch testing, there is still a need to develop column testing procedures that more closely approximate realistic conditions. Current column studies are conducted under continuously saturated conditions, without considering unsaturated intermittent flow conditions that exist in the field in response to precipitation events. This study evaluates the effect of different types of column flow on the release of constituents from a granular material. Two different types of intermittent unsaturated flow were studied and compared to continuously saturated flow. Leaching data, including pH, conductivity, and constituent release was compared from the three types of columns. Results showed that there is no difference between the two types of intermittent unsaturated flow, nor is there a significant difference between these two flows and continuously saturated flow, other than higher initial concentrations of salts in intermittent unsaturated flow column testing at low LS ratios. However, this difference is not significant after a LS ratio of 2mL/g. Release of constituents was similar in all three cases. Also, all three cases show that after a LS ratio of 5mL/g there is no significant change in the pH, conductivity or release of constituents. The multi-method characterization using optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed the surface morphology of the ablated craters. This allowed us to characterize precisely the lateral and vertical dimensions of the laser-ablated craters for different laser pulse energies and pulse numbers at each spot. Based on the obtained information, we quantitatively determined the ablation threshold fluence for the fs laser irradiation when different pulse numbers were applied to the same spot by using two independent extrapolation techniques. We found that in case of NIR femtosecond laser pulse irradiation, the ablation threshold significantly depends on the number of laser pulses applied to the same spot indicating that incubation effects play an important role in this material. In case of VUV ns laser pulses, the ablation rate is significantly higher due to the high photon energy and the predominantly linear absorption in the material. These results are discussed on the basis of recent models of the interaction of laser pulses with dielectrics. Simultaneously, the orientation distribution functions have been calculated from pole figures obtained by X-ray diffraction. Different stages of texture development could be assigned to typical microstructures. A1 - Kühn, Gerhard T1 - Plasma-based introduction of monosort functional groups of different type and density onto polymer surfaces. Part 1: Behaviour of polymers exposed to oxygen plasma N2 - Several approaches were investigated to produce monosort functionalized polymer surfaces with a high density and homogeneity of functional groups: (i) Plasma oxidation followed by wet-chemical reduction, (ii) formation of radicals and grafting on of functional group carrying molecules, (iii) plasma bromination followed by (iv) Williamson or Gabriel-like synthesis of spacer molecules, and (v) a pulsed plasma polymerization of functional groups bearing monomers or (vi) their copolymerisation with other comonomers. The formation of hydroxyl (OH), primary amino (NH2), and carboxyl (COOH) groups was studied in detail. The oxygen plasma treatment (i) in a low-pressure non-isothermal glow discharge results in the formation of a wide variety of O functional groups, polymer degradation and crosslinking. Low power densities and short exposure times (0.1 to 2 s) are required to functionalize a surface while preserving the original polymer structure. Carbonate, ester, and aromatic groups are rapidly degraded by an oxygen plasma treatment leading to scissions of polymer backbones and loss in molecular weight. Also the formation of macrocycles and C=C bonds was observed in a region of around 4 nm in depth. The investigated polymers could be classified by their degradation behaviour on exposure to the oxygen plasma.___TAGSTART___BR___TAGEND___ In order to maximize the process selectivity for OH groups, the variety of oxygen functionalities formed by the oxygen plasma was wet-chemically reduced by diborane, vitridetrade (Na complex), and LiAlH4. Typical yields were 9 to 14 OH groups per 100 carbon atoms.___TAGSTART___BR___TAGEND___ Plasma bromination (iii) (40 Br per 100 C atoms) of polymers, followed by grafting of spacer molecules (iv), has been proved to be a highly selective reaction.___TAGSTART___BR___TAGEND___ Another way to produce high densities of monosort functionalities was the pulsed plasma polymerization of functional group bearing monomers such as allylamine, allylalcohol or acrylic acid (v). The retention of chemical structure and functional groups during plasma polymerization was achieved by using low power densities and the pulsed plasma technique. The maximum yields were 30 OH, 18 NH2, and 24 COOH groups per 100 C atoms. To vary the density of functional groups a chemical copolymerization with ''chain-extending'' comonomers such as butadiene and ethylene was initiated in the pulsed plasma (vi). Additionally, the often-observed post-plasma oxidations of such layers initiated by reaction of trapped radicals with oxygen from the air were successfully suppressed by using NO gas as radical quencher. Part 2: Pulsed plasma polymerization N2 - This new functionalization method consists of the deposition of very thin plasma polymer layers (20 to 100 nm) of functional group bearing monomers in pulsed plasma. With allylalcohol, a maximum of 30 OH groups per 100 C atoms was measured with a selectivity of about 90% and a significant stability at long-time exposure to air. Allylamine was used to produce primary amino groups, with a maximum of 18 NH2 groups per 100 C atoms. Side reactions were observed during the storage in air, such as oxidation of the amino groups. Carboxylic groups could be produced using acrylic acid with a maximum concentration of 24 COOH groups per 100 C atoms. The most prominent side reaction was the decarbonylation/ decarboxylation of the acid group during plasma deposition.___TAGSTART___BR___TAGEND___ The variation of the density of functional groups using the pulsed-plasma polymerization of functional-group-bearing monomers was possible by the chemically-initiated radical copolymerization with either a chain-extending monomer, such as ethylene, or a cross linker, such as butadiene, in plasma. The density of functional groups could be adjusted continuously (0 to 30 OH, 0 to 18 NH2 and 0 to 24 COOH groups per 100 C atoms).___TAGSTART___BR___TAGEND___ The successful application of these densely functionalized polymer surfaces for producing biocompatible surfaces and for use in metal–polymer composites is proposed. In order to achieve this ultrasound sensors are incorporated into compression, injection and RTM (resin transfer) mould. For many commercial products imprints or any surface markings upon the moulded product are undesirable. Due to its physical properties ultrasound has a large advantage over other techniques for similar applications. The sound wave can pass through the wall of the mould and direct contact with the moulded part is not required. In this particular case one fundamental problem is a good coupling of the sensors to the mould wall. Several mediums came into question but because of the high technical (e. g. temperature and long time stability) and practical demands, it was decided that dry (non-fluid) coupling would be the most promising candidate. A handful of coupling foils suitable also at high temperatures and for long time application under industrial conditions were tested and are presented in this paper. T1 - Determination of energy release rate in carbon fiber - Thermoplastic composites and comparison of crack propagation in amorphous and crystalline interface by single fiber pullout test N2 - The fracture toughness in the fiber-matrix composite by means of the single fiber pull-out test can be achievable, if it is possible to measure the compliance of partial debonded fiber, which necessitates a stable crack propagation and the determination of the corresponding crack length. A combination of high stiff test equipment and a simultaneous monitoring of the photo-elastic pattern of the embedded fibers with the help of polarization microscope enables to measure crack length and determination of Gc [Hampe, A and Marotzke, C. (1997). The Energy Release Rate of the Fiber/Polymer Matrix Interface: Measurement and Theoretical Analysis, J. Reinf. Plast. and Compo., 16: 341-352.]. This method is well-known for glass fiber-amorphous polymer composite. In this investigation, we tried to implement the same technique to C-fiber with amorphous and semi-crystalline polymer composites. The energy release rate (ERR) of the fiber-matrix interface was evaluated for the carbon fiber-reinforced in polycarbonate (PC) by interfacial crack propagation arising in the single fiber pullout test. Further, the crack propagation at the fiber-matrix interface with different matrix morphology was discussed with the use of photo-elastic pattern observed with the aid of polarization microscope. The maximum concentrations of functional groups were 31 OH, 18 NH2 or 24 COOH groups per 100 C atoms using allyl alcohol, allylamine or acrylic acid respectively as the monomer. The measured peel strengths of aluminium deposits increased linearly with the concentration of functional groups. Near the maximum concentration of OH (>27 OH/100 C atoms) or at moderate concentrations of COOH groups (>10 COOH/100 C atoms), constant (maximum) peel strengths were measured due to the mechanical collapse of one component in the composite (cohesive failure). Interface failures in Al-PP composites were found with COOH, NH2 and OH groups and cohesive failures were seen when higher concentrations of COOH groups were applied (>10 COOH/100 C atoms). The influence of the external plasma parameters on the secondary ion mass spectra of plasma-deposited polystyrene films was investigated. From these data, information on the chemical character of the plasma polystyrene films was derived. In the range of deposition conditions applied in this study, the fragmentation of styrene is a minor process. The main process is probably the radical chain propagation to polymers. All the polystyrene plasma polymers, relying on ToF-SIMS, seem to be rather similar to a reference polystyrene oligomer sample. When the plasma polymers are exposed to air, extensive oxygen incorporation occurs. Oxygen uptake was found to alter the emission probabilities of secondary ions. A relation between the regularity of the plasma polymers and the amount of oxygen incorporation was found. The result was that the chemical regularity of the plasma polystyrene decreases when the effective power in the plasma is increased.
