The linkage between the core unit (CU), branching units (BU), and OSK rods relies on the CuAAC reaction between terminal alkynes and azides. Two different strategies of dendrimer synthesis were investigated and it was found that the convergent approach is clearly superior to the divergent one. SAXS measurements and MD simulations indicate that the obtained dendrimer features a globular structure with very low density. Obviously, the OSK rods stabilize a rather loose mass-fractal structure. The oxidation behaviour of two 9–12 % Cr steels T92 and VM12 was studied under dry oxyfuel environment in the temperature range of 580–650 °C for up to 1,000 h. The oxide structure and morphology were analyzed using various experimental techniques. A complex temperature dependence of oxidation rate is observed for both T92 and VM12 whereby the oxidation rate decreased with increasing temperature. This is attributed to increased Cr-enrichment in the inner scale with increasing temperature. T92 and VM12 alloys are also susceptible to carburization in an oxyfuel environment. Four PC/ABS blends were discussed, which satisfy different UL 94 classifications due to the competing effects of gasification, charring, flame inhibition and melt flow/dripping. For numerical investigation, the particle finite element method (PFEM) is used. Its capability to model the complex fire behaviour of polymers in the UL 94 is analysed. The materials' properties are characterised, in particular the additives impact on the dripping behaviour during thermal exposure. BDP is an efficient plasticiser; adding PTFE prevents dripping by causing a flow limit. PFEM simulations reproduce the dripping and burning behaviour, in particular the competition between gasification and dripping. The thermal impact of both the burner and the flame is approximated taking into account flame inhibition, charring and effective heat of combustion. PFEM is a promising numerical tool for the investigation of the fire behaviour of polymers, particularly when large deformations are involved. Not only the principal phenomena but also the different UL 94 classifications and the extinction times are well predicted. T1 - Transformation activity in ultrafine grained pseudoelastic NiTi wires during small amplitude loading/unloading experiments N2 - Martensitic phase transformations were studied in ultrafine grained Ni-rich pseudoelastic NiTi wires during cyclic deformation under small imposed strain amplitudes. Small strain variation tests were complemented by a thermographic analysis of the emerging temperature distributions in the specimens. The characteristics of the observed thermal profiles result from the specific phase transitions which take place at different stress levels. Homogeneous temperature changes, corresponding to a non-localized transformation activity along the specimen length, were observed throughout the whole range of applied stresses, starting from values as low as 100 MPa. This behavior is in line with previous literature reports for the stress-induced transformation from B2 austenite to R-phase as long as the critical stress for B19' martensite formation is not reached. In the present study, similar type of transformation activity could also be demonstrated at higher strains/stresses, even after the stress induced transformation to B19' was apparently completed. These findings suggest that transformation activity involving the B2 phase is present throughout the whole pseudoelastic stress–strain cycle; i.e., it is not restricted to the initial loading portion. Finally, non-localized transformation to or from B19' was identified during small amplitude strain variations in the plateau-like coexistence ranges of the pseudoelastic cycle. Die Feuerwehr Frankfurt hat eine Sammlung von Bränden, bei denen WDVS beteiligt waren, initiiert. Wertet man diese Sammlung hinsichtlich der Brandentstehung aus, fällt auf, dass von den insgesamt 57 Bränden 79 % (45 Brände) vor der Fassade begannen. 25 dieser 45 Brände wurden durch brennenden Müll oder Müllcontainer ausgelöst. Die meisten der gesammelten Brände (50) waren in den letzten fünf Jahren (2010 - 2014). Auf Grund dieser Erkenntnisse wurden an der BAM Müilcontainer (aus Plastik) hinsichtlich ihrer Entflammbarkeit und Wärmefreisetzung untersucht. Außerdem wurden im Auftrag der BMK Müllcontainer hinsichtlich ihrer Wärmefreisetzung und Brandentwicklung im Großversuch an der MFPA Leipzig untersucht. Mit Hilfe dieser Voruntersuchungen wurde eine Brandquelle identifiziert, die Zündquellen wie einen brennenden, Müllcontainer oder kleinere Ansammlungen von Sperrmüll repräsentiert: Es wurde eine 200 kg Holzkrippe gewählt, da die Holzkrippe bessere Ergebnisse hinsichtlich der Reproduzierbarkeit der Ergebnisse darstellt als z.B. ein Müllcontainer. Mit dieser Zündquelle wurden Großversuche an der MFPA Leipzig mit einem zugelassenen WDVS durchgeführt. Das WDVS zeigte unter diesen Prüfbedingungen ein nicht akzeptables Brandverhalten. Die folgenden zwei Versuche wurden mit Ertüchtigungsmaßnahmen durchgeführt, die eine signifikante Verbesserung des Brandverhaltens brachten. Zusätzlich wurde an der BAM eine Serie von Brandversuchen im Kieinmaßstab in der Single Burning Item (SBI) Prüfeinrichtung durchgeführt. Dabei wurde die auf das WDVS wirkende Wärmefreisetzungsrate variiert und der Einfluss von Grad und Größe von Beschädigungen der Putzschicht hinsichtlich des Brandverhaltens untersucht. Deutliche Unterschiede im Brandverhalten konnten sowohl quantitativ als auch qualitativ nachgewiesen werden. T1 - Challenges for fire safety in etic systems with polystyrene insulation N2 - Several fires involving external thermal insulating (ETIC) systems with polystyrene in Germany started an extensive discussion about fire safety of such systems. The Frankfurt fire service started to collect reports about real fire cases which involved ETICS with polystyrene two years ago. This collection shows that especially fires, which started in front of the buildings led to more severe fires of the facades than fires inside the buildings. In several fires the ignition sources were burning waste containers. Three of the real cases are discussed in more detail: a serious fire in Frankfurt on a building site and two fires of apartment buildings, which developed quite differently. Additionally the plastic waste containers, which started several fires are investigated regarding ignitability and heat release rates. The investigation shows that plastic waste containers are very effective as ignition source and that the usual placement directly in front of combustible facades can be a problem for fire safety. Moving these containers and unintentional contact with the facade can lead to damage of the facade coating. These damages were investigated qualitatively and quantitative on a wide collection of buildings. After classifying the damage intermediate scale tests were performed in a modified Single Burning Item (SBI) Test. The damage of the coating was varied as well as the power of the sand bed burner of the SBI apparatus. The damage significantly influenced the fire development on the specimen. In some tests the damaged rendering of the ETIC system collapsed and resulted in a sudden fire growth: after the collapse of the rendering the whole specimen was suddenly on fire. Several effects, which could be seen in the intermediate scale tests correspond to observations which were made in the real cases. As a consequence of the investigations challenges and possible measures to enhance fire safety of ETIC systems are discussed. Zu garantierende Kerbschlagarbeitswerte sind in Produktnormen weltweit festgelegt. Gleichwohl enthalten ganze Normenreihen für Stähle falsche Festlegungen zur Verwendung von Untermaßprobenergebnissen. Im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Studie stehen die Auswertung von KV-T-Daten und die Skalierung von Untermaßprobenergebnissen. Hierzu wurden an ISO-V-Proben der Breiten 2,5; 5; 7,5 und 10 mm aus vier Baustählen im Streckgrenzenbereich von 235 bis 960 MPa dicht belegte KV-T-Kurven ermittelt. Es wurden unterschiedliche Vorgehensweisen zur Kurvenanpassung und Festlegung von Übergangstemperaturen wie auch der Hoch- bzw. Tieflagenarbeit untersucht. Die Ergebnisse unterstreichen unter anderem, dass die in festgelegte Vorgehensweise, nach der Untermaßprobenergebnisse proportional auf Normprobenmaße zu skalieren sind, nicht nur zu falschen, sondern auch nicht-konservativen Kerbschlagarbeitswerten führen kann. Das Ausmaß dieses Probenbreiteneffektes ist Werkstoff- und temperaturabhängig. Da die Kerbschlagarbeit als Abnahmekriterium verwendet wird, ergeben sich unmittelbare wirtschaftliche und sicherheitstechnische Konsequenzen. The particle formation was carried out by coprecipitation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) sulfate in a continuous aqueous process using a micromixer system. Aggregates containing 50 primary particles with sizes of 2 nm were formed at a reaction temperature of 30 °C. These particles aggregated further with time and were not stable. In contrast, stable single-core particles with a diameter of 7 nm were formed at 80 °C as revealed by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) coupled in-line with the micromixer for particle characterization. X-ray diffraction and TEM confirmed the SAXS results. X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) identified the iron oxide phase as maghemite. T1 - Impact of food components during in vitro digestion of silver nanoparticles on cellular uptake and cytotoxicity in intestinal cells N2 - Because of the rising application of nanoparticles in food and food-related products, we investigated the influence of the digestion process on the toxicity and cellular uptake of silver nanoparticles for intestinal cells. The main food components – carbohydrates, proteins and fatty acids – were implemented in an in vitro digestion process to simulate realistic conditions. Digested and undigested silver nanoparticle suspensions were used for uptake studies in the well-established Caco-2 model. Small-angle X-ray scattering was used to estimate particle core size, size distribution and stability in cell culture medium. Particles proved to be stable and showed radii from 3.6 to 16.0 nm. Undigested particles and particles digested in the presence of food components were comparably taken up by Caco-2 cells, whereas the uptake of particles digested without food components was decreased by 60%. Overall, these findings suggest that in vivo ingested poly (acrylic acid)-coated silver nanoparticles may reach the intestine in a nanoscaled form even if enclosed in a food matrix. While appropriate for studies on the uptake into intestinal cells, the Caco-2 model might be less suited for translocation studies. Moreover, we show that nanoparticle digestion protocols lacking food components may lead to misinterpretation of uptake studies and inconclusive results. Sliding tests were run against AISI 52100 steel and the worn surfaces as well as the transfer film were analyzed by means of SEM, EDX and Infrared Spectroscopy. Results indicate that the chemical structure of the polyimide has a major influence on the tribological behavior. While the friction of PI2 remains rather stable in all environments, PI1 showed very low friction in hydrogen without any lubricant. The lubricity of graphite was found to be more effective in hydrogen than in moist air. Die Experimente wurden bei 3,1 MPa Kontaktdruck und einer Gleitgeschwindigkeit von 0,2 m/s bzw. 1 m/s durchgeführt. Die verschlissenen Oberflächen und die Morphologie des Materialübertrags auf die Stahl-Gegenfläche wurden mittels Lichtmikroskopie, REM, TEM und FTIR untersucht. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass sowohl die Matrix als auch der Graphitanteil einen deutlichen Einfluss auf das Reibverhalten von Verbundwerkstoffen in Wasserstoffumgehungen haben können. N2 - The tribological behaviour of graphite filled polyimide composites against steel (AISI 521 00) was investigated in air, vacuum and hydrogen environment at different pressures (10³ Pa, 10⁴ Pa, and 10⁵ Pa). Composites consist of two polyimides filled with different types and amount of graphite. Friction and wear measurements were performed at 0.2m/s and 3.1MPa at ambient temperature. Wom surfaces and morphology of the material transfer on the steel counter-face were investigated by optical microscopy, SEM, TEM and FTIR analyses. Results reveal that both the polyimide structure and graphite can have an important influence on the friction behaviour of composites in hydrogen environment. T1 - Characterization and discrimination of saffron by multisensory systems, SPME-GC-MS and UV-Vis spectrophotometry N2 - Different electronic sensor systems coupled with multivariate data analysis were applied to characterize and classify seven saffron samples and to verify their declared geographical origin. The proposed electronic sensing consists of a low-cost electronic nose (E-nose) based on metal oxide semiconductor sensors and a voltammetric electronic tongue (VE-tongue) based on voltammetric sensors. The ability of multivariable analysis methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) and Support Vector Machines (SVMs) to classify the saffron samples according to their geographical origin have been investigated. Both PCA and HCA have shown an overlapping of E-nose responses. Moreover, the SVM analysis of the E-nose database reached a 66.07% success rate in the recognition of the saffron sample odour. On the other hand, good discrimination has been reached using PCA and HCA in the VE-tongue characterization case, besides a 100% accuracy in the saffron flavour recognition was attained. To validate the proposed electronic sensing systems, analytical chemical methods such as SPME-GC-MS and UV-Vis spectrophotometry were used. These analytical methods could be helpful tools to identify the composition of volatile compounds of the analysed saffron samples. Moreover, UV-Vis spectrophotometry was also used to determine the non-volatile profile of the samples from different geographic origins. It is demonstrated that the electronic sensing systems' findings are in a satisfactory correlation with the analytical methods. In the light of these results, we might say that the electronic systems offer a fast, simple and efficient tool to recognize the declared geographical origin of the saffron samples. The DMA characteristic parameters are storage modulus E', loss modulus E' and loss factor tanδ. These parameters are ideally suited to observe the vitrification, referred to as glass transition, resulting from the cross-linking reaction. Detection of the cure state may also be achieved by determining the momentary glass transition temperature of partially cured samples. The consequent use of a multi-frequency measuring regime was used to derive the apparent activation energy for the glass transition process. Different temperature programs were also applied to monitor the curing process directly, as well as to investigate the different states of incomplete cure reached in preceding curing steps. The intention was to provide better understanding of the consequences of an interrupted autoclave curing process and to use DMA to detect the cure state achieved. With DMA, the continuation of an incomplete curing process also can be monitored. Ein Arbeitsschwerpunkt ist die Bewertung der Lebensdauer von Metall- und Elastomerdichtungen in den Behältern im Hinblick auf die Anforderungen für langfristige Behältersicherheit (min. 40 Jahre in Deutschland). Um die Eigenschaftsänderungen der Elastomerdichtungen während einer beschleunigten Alterung über lange Zeiträume (bis zu fünf Jahre) untersuchen zu können, wurde ein Alterungsprogramm an ausgewählten Elastomeren (HNBR, EPDM, FKM) begonnen. Im Gegensatz zu Normalterungsverfahren altern wir keine Normteile, sondern O-Ringe im unverpressten sowie verpressten Zustand. Diese Vorgehensweise ermöglicht die Bewertung des Einflusses der Verpressung auf die Alterung sowie die Untersuchung des Bauteilversagens mittels Leckageratenmessungen unter anwendungsnahen Bedingungen. Weitere Charakterisierungsmethoden sind Härtemessung, dynamisch-mechanische Analyse (DMA), Thermogravimetrie (TGA), Druckspannungsrelaxation, Druckverformungsrest (DVR), Dichtebestimmung und Zugversuch. Das Ziel ist, die Leckagerate mit anderen Eigenschaften bzw. Methoden zu korrelieren, um so ein aussagekräftiges und leichter zu bestimmendes Lebensdauerkriterium für elastomere O-Ringe abzuleiten. Während der Alterung können in Abhängigkeit von Material sowie Alterungsdauer und –temperatur Inhomogenitäten aufgrund von diffusionsbegrenzter Oxidation auftreten, durch die sich unterschiedliche Eigenschaften an der Oberfläche und im Volumen der Dichtung ergeben, was zu falschen Lebensdauerabschätzungen führen kann. Mittels Mikrohärtemessung über den Querschnitt werden diese Effekte charakterisiert und bei der Extrapolation mittels Zeit-Temperatur-Verschiebung und Arrheniusgraph berücksichtigt. Bisher liegen Daten von bis zu einem Jahr bei vier verschiedenen Temperaturen (75 °C, 100 °C, 125 °C und 150 °C) gealterten Proben vor. Nach 100 Tagen bei 150 °C weisen HNBR und EPDM schon einen DVR von über 80 % auf, aber noch keinen signifikanten Anstieg der Leckagerate. Diese sinkt zunächst während der Alterung, da die Permeabilität aufgrund von Vernetzungsreaktionen sinkt. However it is difficult to correlate the functional properties of TiO₂ nanomaterials to the properties at single nanoparticle level due to the high polydispersity in shape, size and surface properties of the currently available TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) Although intensive experimental and theoretical studies have been conducted on the reactivity of different surfaces of metal oxides such as TiO₂ [1,2] much less attention is paid on the dependence of functional properties, like photocatalytic activity, dye adsorption, open circuit potential and fill factor in dye sensitized solar cells, on crystal facets in different orientations [3]. One of the goal of SETNanoMetro is the development of design rules to tune crystal facets of TiO₂ NPs in order to optimize and control functional properties. By tuning the ratio of different facets, the functional properties would be correspondingly changed. In the present work we have developed a series of design rules in order to obtain sets of anatase TiO₂ NPs with low polydispersity and to tune their shape and their size though hydrothermal processing of Ti(IV)-Triethanolamine complex in presence of different shape controllers (OH-, triethanolamine, fluoride). Through a careful experimental design the influence of many process parameters (pH, temperature, shape controller type and concentration) on the synthesis outcome (size, shape and polydispersity), a predictive soft model was developed. The model is able to predict reasonably well the synthesis outcome allowing to tune the shape factor from 5 (prisms) to 1.5 (bipyramids) to 0.2 (platelets). In the present study, two types of surface-modified magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles, coated with non-hazardous naturally occurring agents—either tannic acid (TA) or dissolved natural organic matter—were evaluated as magnetic heterogeneous catalysts. Chemical synthesis (co-precipitation) was chosen to yield the nanocatalysts due to its well-established simplicity and efficiency. Subsequently, the properties of the final products were fully assessed by various characterization techniques. The catalytic activity in heterogeneous oxidation of aqueous solutions containing a model pollutant, Bisphenol A (BPA), was comparatively studied. The effect of operational parameters (catalyst loading, H2O2 dosage, and UV light irradiation) on the Degradation performance of the oxidation process was investigated. The optimum experimental parameters were found to be 1.0 g/L of catalysts and 10 mM H2O2, under UV irradiation. The highest mineralization rates were observed for Fe3O4-TA catalyst. More than 80 % of BPA was removed after 30 min of reaction time under the specified experimental conditions. The obtained results showed that the two catalysts studied here are suitable candidates for the removal of pollutants in wastewaters by means of heterogeneous reaction using a green sustainable treatment method. The sensitized nanomaterials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry, and used in the catalytic wet hydrogen peroxideoxidation (CWHPO) of RB5 and RY84, in laboratory-scale experiments. With the test setup, the compression of the tested seal can be reduced by a defined degree in a time period of less than 1 s. For the evaluation of the leak tightness, leakage rates can be determined. BAM-L200 is prepared from a cross-sectioned epitaxially grown layer stack of AlxGa1–xAs and InxGa1–xAs on a GaAs substrate. The surface of BAM-L200 provides a flat pattern with stripe widths ranging down to 1 nm. Calibration distances, grating periods and stripe widths have been certified by TEM with traceability to the length unit. The combination of gratings, isolated narrow stripes and sharp edges of wide stripes offers plenty of options for the determination of lateral resolution, sharpness and calibration of length scale at selected settings of imaging surface-analytical instruments. The feasibility of the reference material for an analysis of the lateral resolution is demonstrated in detail by evaluation of ToF-SIMS, AES and EDX images. In this paper we focus on the behaviour of elastomer seals below ambient temperatures after a fast partial release. Despite the primarily static application conditions of many seals their behaviour after partial compression release is of interest with regard to potential decrease of leak-tightness. For this investigation a special setup was designed which allows the partial release of compressed seal systems at different temperatures accompanied by leakage rate measurements. Additionally, the formation of photo-sensitized oxygen by spin-trapping using electron spin resonance is investigated. The catalytic activity of two model substrates (carbamazepine and bisphenol A) is also evaluated. The effect of operational parameters (catalyst and H2O2 concentration, UVA light) on the degradation performance of the oxidation process is investigated. The obtained reaction rates depend on the nature of the compound and increase with iron oxide shell thickness of the catalyst. Moreover, these materials show a significant activity during two consecutive tests. The optimum experimental parameters are found to be 1.0 g L−1 of catalysts, 10 mM H2O2, under UVA irradiation. More than 99% of both substrates are removed after 30 min of reaction time under the experimental conditions given above. The results obtained show that the catalysts are suitable candidates for the removal of pollutants in wastewaters by means of the Fenton heterogeneous reaction. This includes the investigation of elastomeric seals applied in the containers. Besides examining the low-temperature behavior of elastomeric seals, it is our goal to evaluate the service lifetime of the seals with regard to the requirements for long-term safety (40 years and more) of the containers. Furthermore, we deem it necessary to exceed the requirements given in the ageing standard DIN 53508 and take into account diffusion-limited oxidation (DLO) effects and non-Arrhenius behavior when making lifetime predictions. Therefore, we started an ageing programme with selected rubbers (HNBR, FKM and EPDM) which are oven-aged at four different temperatures (75 °C, 100 °C, 125 °C and 150 °C) in order to extrapolate the data to service temperature using different models and check which one is appropriate. Samples are examined at different times up to 5 years. In order to be able to compare between compressed and relaxed rubber, they are aged in two conditions: the undeformed O-ring state as well as compressed between plates with a compression of 25 % corresponding to the actual compression during service. Additionally, we are ageing samples in flanges that allow leakage rate measurements which is the central performance criterion. Analysis methods include hardness as a quick indicator, compression set and compression stress relaxation as measures reflecting the actual properties of a compressed seal. Additionally, we are applying classical polymer analysis methods like dynamic mechanic analysis and thermogravimetric analysis which show changes in the polymeric structure due to chain scission and crosslinking. Furthermore, we are testing the leakage rate of the O-rings in order to correlate the changes in physical properties to the actual performance of the seal. First results of samples aged up to 100 days show a strong increase in hardness for HNBR, a moderate increase for EPDM and hardly a change for FKM. A similar result is seen in the compression set of samples aged 100 d at 100 °C in compression as HNBR has reached 60 %, EPDM 25 % and FKM 15 % compression set. However, after ageing at 150 °C, EPDM shows a worse performance with 95 % compression set compared to HNBR with only 80 %. This is probably due to DLO effects in HNBR that appear because of the fast ageing and low oxygen permeability in HNBR. This leads to a deficit of oxygen in the center of the sample which is thus protected from ageing and can retain elastic properties. The full paper shall discuss the changes in material properties observed to date and the impact on the performance of elastomeric seals. The SEM analysis in transmission mode (T-SEM) of NPs on thin film supports has many benefits when compared to the analysis of NPs on bulk substrates. The enhanced material (mass - thickness) contrast of the T-SEM imaging mode is well suited for in-depth and, particularly valuable, to very accurate, traceable, lateral dimensional measurements of NPs. Compared to samples prepared on bulk substrates, T-SEM with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) achieves a drastically improved spatial resolution of the emitted X-rays. The poor signal-to-noise ratio of the X-ray spectra emitted by a single nanoparticle (NP) can be improved by the use of high-sensitivity (high collection solid angle) silicon drift (SDD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometers (EDS). The EDS spectral imaging of a single NP with a spatial resolution below 10 nm has become possible. This is demonstrated by means of various examples of nanostructures. Advanced data processing of T-SEM/EDS results sets the stage for the automated classification of NPs by feature analysis. Depending on the area of use, the rubber materials have to demonstrate proper sealing performance with regard to mechanical, thermal, and environmental conditions as well as irradiation during the entire operation period. Concerning DPC, degradation effects should be limited in a way that, for example, effects from potentially released decomposition elements may not harm e.g. metal barrier seals. Leakage rate measurements should be possible also after long interim storage periods prior to subsequent transportation. During continuous cooling, the material behaviour of elastomers changes in the rubber-glass transition temperature ränge from rubberlike entropy-elasticity to stiff energy-elasticity, allowing for almost no strain or retraction. Hence rubbers are normally used above their rubber-glass transition but the minimum limit at which they work has not been defined precisely. For the investigations, fluorocarbon (FKM) and ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) rubbers were selected, as they are often used in radioactive waste Containers. The elastomers were studied using several thermoanalytical methods and compression set. The results were compared with component tests to determine the temperature at which the sealing function of O-rings made of eiastomer breaks down. In addition to these results, under static conditions we designed a new measurement set-up which allows for a small deflection of the flange and simultaneous leakage rate measurement at low temperatures. To develop a feasible model for the prediction of densification during that process, master sintering curves (MSCs) for the commercial LTCC DP951 were generated from thermomechanical analysis (TMA) data in the pressure regime from 2 to 500 kPa. Strain mainly related to creep deformation of the LTCC was identified by evaluation of the strain rate and was discarded for the determination of MSC parameters. It was found that no creep occurred at any pressure up to a relative density of 0.9. Different pressure levels can be modeled with the same activation energy of 400 kJ/mol. Densification curves predicted by the model were in good agreement with experimental data. Based on MSCs, the pressure-assisted master sintering surface was compiled to illustrate the influence of pressure on densification. The results show that the MSC approach is a suitable method to feasibly predict the densification of LTCC during PAS. T1 - X-ray compton line scan tomography N2 - The potentials of incoherent X-ray scattering (Compton) computed tomography (CT) are investigated. The imaging of materials of very different atomic number or density at once is generally a perpetual challenge for X-ray tomography or radiography. In a basic laboratory set-up for simultaneous perpendicular Compton scattering and direct beam attenuation tomography are conducted by single channel photon counting line scans. This results in asymmetric distortions of the projection profiles of the scattering CT data set. In a first approach, corrections of Compton scattering data by taking advantage of rotational symmetry yield tomograms without major geometric artefacts. A cylindrical sample composed of PE, PA, PVC, glass and wood demonstrates similar Compton contrast for all the substances, while the conventional absorption tomogram only reveals the two high order materials. Comparison to neutron tomography reveals astonishing similarities except for the glass component (without hydrogen). Therefore, Compton CT offers the potential to replace neutron tomography, which requires much more efforts. Die Bestimmung von Formabweichungen und die innere Struktur von Objekten, einschließlich Defekten, ist für die Industrie von besonderem Interesse. Die Möglichkeit der XCT, ein Objekt mit seinen inneren und äußeren Strukturen gleichzeitig abzubilden, führt auch zu einer zunehmenden Anwendung der XCT in der dimensionellen Messtechnik einschließlich der Bestimmung der Messunsicherheit. Die experimentelle Ermittlung der Unsicherheit durch wiederholte XCT-Messungen ist kosten- und zeitintensiv. Die Simulation der XCT eröffnet die Möglichkeit, die aufgabenspezifische Messunsicherheit ressourceneffizient numerisch zu ermitteln. Es gibt bereits mehrere Softwarelösungen, die XCT-Systeme simulieren können, wie z. B. aRTist. Sobald ein XCT-System virtuelle nachgebildet wurde, muss seine Genauigkeit quantitativ im Vergleich zu den XCT-Messungen bewertet werden. Simple and efficient procedures for the synthesis of the magnetic catalysts were employed, their properties being fully assessed by various characterization techniques. The catalytic activity in heterogeneous oxidation of aqueous solutions containing Bisphenol A (BPA) over the catalysts was comparatively studied. The optimum experimental parameters were: 1g/L of catalysts, 10 mM H2O2, under UV irradiation. The highest mineralization rates were observed for Fe3O4-TA catalyst. More than 80% of BPA were removed after 30 minutes of reaction time under the specified experimental conditions. T1 - CCQM pilot study P-140: Quantitative surface analysis of multi-element alloy films N2 - A pilot study for the quantitative surface analysis of multi-element alloy films has been performed by the Surface Analysis Working Group (SAWG) of the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance (CCQM). The aim of this pilot study is to ensure the equivalency in the measurement capability of national metrology institutes for the quantification of multi-element alloy films. A Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) film with non-uniform depth distribution was chosen as a representative multi-element alloy film. The atomic fractions of the reference and the test CIGS films were certified by isotope dilution - inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry. A total number counting (TNC) method was used as a method to determine the signal intensities of the constituent elements, which are compared with their certified atomic fractions. The atomic fractions of the CIGS films were measured by various methods, such as Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis and Electron Probe Micro Analysis (EPMA) with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDX). Fifteen laboratories from eight National Metrology Institutes (NMIs), one Designated Institute (DI) and six non-NMIs participated in this pilot study. Although the average atomic fractions of 18 data sets showed rather poor relative standard deviations of about 5.5 % to 6.8 %, they were greatly improved to about 1.5 % to 2.2 % by excluding 5 strongly deviating data sets from the average atomic fractions. In this pilot study, the average expanded uncertainties of SIMS, XPS, AES, XRF and EPMA were 3.84%, 3.68%, 3.81%, 2.88% and 2.90%, respectively. These values are much better than those in the key comparison K-67 for composition of a Fe-Ni alloy film. As a result, the quantification of CIGS films using the TNC method was found to be a good candidate as a subject for a CCQM key comparison. Rotating around an axis parallel to the grid lines of the phase grating changes the grating’s shape and thereby the initial distribution of phase shifts. This yields high visibilities for shorter propagation distances than derived from box shapes. Tilting the grating in the scattering plane allows continuous tuning of the grating’s height that corresponds to an ideal phase shift for a particular photon energy. As rubbers are used as main sealing materials for Containers for low and intermediate level radioactive waste and as additional component to metal seals in spent fuel and high active waste Containers, a comprehensive elastomer investigation program is run at BAM. This program comprises investigations of elastomer overall performance, durability, influence of gamma irradiation and low temperature behaviour. In this paper we focus on the behaviour of elastomer seals at low temperatures with regard to potential decrease of leak-tightness as material properties of rubbers are strongly temperature dependent. But additionally to the investigation presented in the past which considered the material properties of new materials and the seal behaviour under purely static conditions [1, 2] we now focus on irradiated materials and on the sealing performance after a fast partial release of the compressed seal. For the investigations different materials were used, e.g. fluorocarbon (FKM) and ethylenepropylene-diene (EPDM) rubber. To determine the effect of gamma irradiation some samples were irradiated and studied by several thermo-analytical methods and compression set. For the investigation of the seal performance under non static conditions we decided to design a new measurement setup which allows for a small flange deflection and simultaneous leakage rate measurement at low temperatures. T1 - Lebensdauerberechnung von Aluminium-Radialverdichterrädern unter Berücksichtigung der Werkstoffalterung [Zwischenbericht über das Vorhaben Nr. 1172 (IGF-Nr. 17734)] N2 - Aluminiumlegierungen mit besonders hoher Festigkeit werden vor allem in der Luft- und Raumfahrt sowie der Automobilindustrie eingesetzt. Ein Anwendungsbeispiel im Fahrzeugbereich sind Radialverdichterräder von Abgasturboladern. Der hierfür untersuchte Werkstoff ist die Legierung 2618A. Die hohe Festigkeit wird durch Ausscheidungshärtung erreicht. Es scheiden sich hierbei durch eine entsprechende Wärmebehandlung Al-Cu-Mg-Teilchen in die Aluminium-Matrix aus. Diese Teilchen stellen Hindernisse für die Bewegung von Versetzungen dar und haben im Fall der Legierung 2618A stabförmige Geometrie. Durch Einsatz bei Betriebstemperatur von etwa 160 °C bis 190 °C vergröbern die Teilchen im Verlauf der Einsatzzeit (Ostwaldreifung) und die Festigkeit nimmt ab. Der Zwischenbericht soll einen Überblick über die bisherigen experimentellen und theoretischen Ergebnisse geben. Es konnten Brinell-Härteverläufe nach Auslagerung bei 160 °C, 180 °C und 190 °C bis 8.760 h Auslagerungszeit gemessen werden. Erste TEM (Transmissionselektronenmikroskopie )-Untersuchungen der Mikrostruktur liegen vor. Anhand dieser Untersuchungen wurden erste Simulationen und Berechnungen der AI-Cu-Mg-Teilchengrößenentwicklung (Vergröberung) durchgeführt. Auswirkungen dieser Vergröberung der AlCu-Mg-Teilchen auf die Fließgrenze bei Raumtemperatur wurden berechnet. Weitere Ergebnisse sind Kriechversuche an Proben im Ausgangszustand T61 der Legierung 2618A bei den Temperaturen 160 °C, 180 °C und 190 °C. Um das zyklische visko-plastische Verhalten des Werkstoffes und den Einfluss der Alterung zu untersuchen, wurden LCF-Ermüdungsversuche an verschiedenen Auslagerungszuständen durchgeführt. The lubricated tribological testing was carried out with fully formulated as well as with non-formulated synthetic base oil. It was possible to analyze individual particles with dimensions as small as about 5–30 nm which are likely the 'primary' wear particles. A majority of the particles, however, are agglomerated and, thus, lead to the formation of larger agglomerates of up to a few micrometers. Chemical analysis led to the conclusion that most of the observed particles generated in formulated oil, especially the larger ones, are composed of the additives of the lubricant oil. In non-formulated base oil, the primary particles are of similar dimensions but contain only iron, chromium and oxygen, but most likely stem from the mating materials. This finding points to the fact that the main wear mechanism under lubricated conditions with fully formulated oil is more like a continuous shearing process rather than a catastrophic failure with the generation of larger primary particles. When the oil is non-formulated, however, several wear mechanisms act simultaneously and the wear rate is increased significantly. Generated larger primary particles are milled down to the nanoscale. When the oil is fully formulated, wear mainly takes places at the additive layer or tribofilm; thus, the steel surface is protected. Therefore it is important to be able to define an end-of-lifetime criterion and to judge the lifetime of elastomeric seals. For this reason, we started an aging program on three kinds of rubbers (HNBR, EPDM, FKM), monitoring the change of properties at four different aging temperatures over extended periods up to five years. Die hohe laterale Auflösung dieser modernen Methoden ermöglicht eine morphologische Charakterisierung der Verschleißpartikel bis in den nm-Bereich. Die hochauflösende Elementanalyse erlaubt eine Interpretation der Zusammensetzung und damit Rückschlüsse auf die Verschleißpartikelbildung. Die tribologischen Untersuchungen sind an einem Modell-Verschleißtribometer nach DIN 51834-2 geschmiert, aber ohne Ölkreislauf, durchgeführt worden. Die Präparation der Verschleißpartikel über eine Entnahme und Übertragung einer geringen Schmierstoffmenge mit einer Mikropipette auf eine TEM-Trägerfolie ist mit einem geringen Aufwand möglich. Der präparative Aufwand ist relativ gering. Das benötigte Schmierstoffvolumen beträgt wenige Mikroliter (0,001 ml). Die Untersuchung zeigt die geringe geometrische Größe der Verschleißpartikel und bestätigt indirekt die These der Reaktionsschichtbildung mit einer geringen Schichtdicke, die ständig verschleißt und sich stetig neu bildet. Die beschriebenen Verschleißprozesse sind in der Modell-Verschleiß-Prüfung mit sehr hohen Pressungen am Versuchsbeginn nachweisbar. Diverse raised and lowered structures including rings, grids, and characters were fabricated. It was found that de-airing of mold cavities is crucial for the molding of embossments. De-airing is possible through pore channels in the LTCC if embossing is performed at intermediate temperatures. The influence of LTCC viscosity on the mold filling behavior during the formation of raised structures is discussed. For accurate molding and proper densification of the LTCC, hot embossing with 0.41 MPa at 775 °C and subsequent heating under load to 850 °C is proposed. Embossing of precise, 40 µm deep circular cavities and 50 µm high raised bars and characters is demonstrated. We show that X-ray refraction techniques are suitable for the detection of pores, cracks, and in general defects. Indeed, the deflected X-ray intensity is directly proportional to the internal specific surface (i.e., surface per unit volume) of the objects. Although single defects cannot be imaged, the presence of populations of those defects can be detected even if the defects have sizes in the nanometer range.We present several applications of X-ray refraction techniques to composite materials:- To visualize macro and microcracks in Ti-SiC metal matrix composites (MMC);- To correlate fatigue damage (fibre de-bonding) of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) to X-ray refraction intensity;- To quantify the impact damage by spatially resolved single fibre de-bonding fraction as a function of impact energy in CFRP laminates.An example of classic high-resolution computer tomography of an impact-damaged CFRP will also be presented, as a benchmark to the present state-of-the-art imaging capabilities. DP951 showed very good moldability, but also unwanted material displacement due to evaporating lead. A high displacement capacity but uneven heights of embossed structures were observed on CT707 samples. SEM investigations proved the precise transfer of surface contours from the mold to the LTCC. Dubov reported the phenomenon of the spontaneous emergence of weak magnetic fields in ferritic structural steel and pipelines, which originate due to heterogeneous mechanical and / or thermal stresses. This observation is not associated with induced phase transformations by deformation and appears to be a promising tool for the prior characterization of damage in ferromagnetic steels. To provide a better understanding of the physical bases of the process, the magnetic microstructure of such materials and a change of magnetic domains after undergoing plastic deformation were studied. A colloidal solution with paramagnetic particles in the nanometer range (ferrofluid), which allowed, through the Bitter technique, not only to observe a change in size of the magnetic domains of the material, but also changes in their morphology. The focus of this research was set to evaluate the suitability of carbon steel API Q125 as a construction material on the geothermal sites Sibayak and Lahendong, Indonesia. The investigations were performed in the artificial geothermal brines under stagnant conditions by means of short-term electrochemical methods (Tafel extrapolation) and long-term exposure tests (up to 6 months). Furthermore, the influence of different parameters on the steels performance (temperature 70 °C, 100 °C and 175 °C, salinity 20 mg/L and 1,500 mg/L chlorides, pH 2 and 4) was assessed as well to ensure a “safer operating window” of a power plant. The results showed carbon steel API Q125 could be suitable for application in stagnant geothermal brines up to temperatures of 175 °C and a chloride concentration of 1,500 mg/L. Its applicability is limited in highly acidic environments (pH 2). AE is a non-destructive technique to monitor the development of structural damage due to external forces. The main objective of this research was to characterise the cracking behaviour in SHCC in direct tensile and flexural tests by using AE. A better understanding of the development of microcracks in SHCC will lead to a better understanding of pseudo strain-hardening behaviour of SHCC and its general performance. ARAMIS optical deformation analysis was also used in direct tensile tests to observe crack propagation in SHCC materials. For the direct tensile tests, SHCC specimens were prepared with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibre with three different volume percentages (1%, 1.85% and 2.5%). For the flexural test beam specimens, only a fibre dosage of 1.85% was applied. It was found that the application of AE in SHCC can be a good option to analyse the crack growth in the specimens under increasing load, the location of the cracks and most importantly the identification of matrix cracking and fibre rupture or slippage. Die Wirkungsweise von ST ist sehr stark von p und der Gegenwart von FM abhängig. Nowadays the research areas on earthen construction focus from one side on the improvement of the materials for new buildings, on the other side on the Conservation of existing architectural heritage. Historical earthen buildings are often damaged by static or dynamic loads in form of extensive cracking. All too often these cracks are insufficiently or inappropriately repaired, if at all, because of lack of knowledge and/or technology. In particular, the behaviour of crack repair by grouting poses a challenge in earthen materials and demands specific requirements for the grouting mortar, such as low water content, good water retention, low shrinkage, etc. Cracks in earthen construction can be repaired by grouting to re-establish structural continuity, and can also be used to consolidate voids and gaps, or as a complement to other strengthening techniques such as the introduction of tie-rods. In the framework of earthen materials for new constructions, the major drawback is that traditional earthen materials are typically considered as non-standard. In addition to these traditional building materials, earthen panels have been developed. Earthen panels are a composite layered material, comparable to Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC). Most products contain an inner layer of reed tubes which improve the tensile strength and reduce the weight. The design parameters for the mixture composition of concrete have significantly increased from strength based towards overall or specific performance based. As a result the variety of concrete has increased yielding a number of special concrete technologies such as Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC), High-Performance Concrete (HPC), Strain Hardening Cement Based Composites (SHCC), and many others. Due to their complex mixture compositions and a multitude of possible interactions between constituents, these concrete types are preferably composed of special components like well-defined powders and sophisticated chemical admixtures. This makes such concrete technology expensive and limits their application to regions with the required material supply chains. The paper puts focus on materials, which are less well studied in conjunction with high performance concrete, but which are available in many developing countries, and in particular sub-Saharan Africa. The paper shows how sec can be designed without polycarboxylate ether superplasticizer and well defined fillers, but with lignosulphonate, cassava starch and rice husk ash. The positive effect of well processed rice husk ashes is demonstrated. Furthermore results are presented of SHCC where typical components like polyvinyl alcohol fibres and fluy ash are replaced by sisal fibres and limestone filler, respectively. The results point out that high performance concrete applications do not have to be limited to a boundary framework with availability of well-defined raw material supply structures and sophisticated admixtures or fibres. Best concrete practices always has to be found locally and regionally based on raw materials, supply chains, and construction needs, but it can be inspired by other regions. In order to tackle the future challenges and build more innovative with concrete, we need to enhance interdisciplinary engineering skills and create networks between future decision makers. Therefore, the KEYS symposia series offers a platform whereby young African scientists can get together with peers from Germany as well as with experienced academic engineers, industry specialists and scientists from across the globe for better implementation of research analysis in their respective fields of study. The results show that starches have stronger influence on the rheology at high particle volume fractions than diutan gum. At lower particle volume fractions this trend is inverted. Experiments with aggregates sizes up to 16 mm (0.63 in.) indicate that stabilizing agent influences on the effects of aggregates on yield stress were small; however up to 1.0 mm (0.04 in.), a significant effect on the plastic viscosity could be observed, which levelled off at larger diameters. T1 - Suitability of Nickel-based alloys and titanium for applications in acids at 200 °C N2 - In the literature there are not much data available to describe the corrosion behavior of titanium, nickel alloys and special stainless steels in acids at high temperature, in particular above the boiling point. Therefore, a laboratory testing program was performed with two titanium alloys (grade 2 - UNS R50400 and grade 12 - UNS R53400) to obtain corrosion data in formic acid, acetic acid, phosphoric acid, polyphosphoric acid, p-toluene sulfonic acid and lactic acid at 200 °C. Results were compared to previously published ones obtained on alloy 31 (UNS N08031), alloy 59 (UNS N06059) and B-2 (UNS N10665). From the results it can be concluded that titanium does not always Show better corrosion resistance than Ni-based alloys, Alloy 59 was the best choice for formic and acetic acids at temperatures of 200°C. Both Ti-alloys are resistant in acetic acid. Some slight differences were observed for formic acid, where Ti grade 2 is only resistant up to a 20 % solution and grade 12 in concentrated acid too. The phosphoric acid is extremely corrosive and none of the investigated materials was resistant. In the diluted acid (5 %) only Ti grade 12 is resistant, whereas in 1 % solution all investigated materials withstand. Alloy B-2 and alloy 59 showed the best behavior in polyphosphoric acid. In 30 % concentrated p-toluene sulfonic acid at 200 °C all alloys tested were unsuitable. In very diluted acid (0.1 %) both Ti-alloys and the other three alloys behaved well. In lactic acid at 180 °C increased corrosion underneath deposits was detected; the best performance was observed for alloy 59 and Ti grade 2. Because of their acidic origin the corrosion resistance of pipeline steels used for CCS (carbon capture and storage) technology might be limited. Over the last years it has become clear that the amount of water and acid building constituents in the CO2 stream has to be controlled very well. In this work, condensates formed in experiments using gaseous CO2 containing high amounts of water, NO2 and SO2 were analyzed, replicated, and used for extensive electrochemical experiments. These highly acidic condensates were enriched with CO2 and then applied to characteristic steels planned to use in the CCS transport chain. Even high alloy steels are susceptible to localized corrosion under these conditions. Although several countries already recycle high amounts of CDW, the use as secondary raw materials is often limited by inferior building material properties. Specific characteristics, like high porosity and low density are caused by hardened cement paste in crushed concrete and the content of mortar and plaster in brick debris. Impurities like wood or gypsum and also harmful substances like organic pollutants may be a major problem for a reuse and should be minimized. Therefore unwanted materials and impairing substances have to be separated from the secondary building material stream. This can be done during the demolition process by using techniques for selective dismantling or during the subsequent treatment of the resulting rubble. Düring the experiment backside temperatures are recorded and the growth of the char is observed with a custom made high temperature endoscope. Second is a testing apparatus based on a propane-oxygen-bumer for direct severe flame impingement of coated samples, reaching temperatures far above 1500 °C. Our small scale samples are coated Steel plates of a size of 75 x 75 x 2 mm3. The structure-propertyrelation between additives, thermal properties and morphology of the char were examined using a well determined series of samples consisting of basic composition mixed with different additives. With the burner-testing-apparatus we studied the behavior of a high performance coating, which shows a transformation of the carbonaceous char into a ceramic foam at temperatures as high as 1600 °C. Nondestructive micro-computed tomography was used to characterize the morphology of the char. According to the structure of the foams we used different analytic methods like cell-detection or wallthickness-analysis. Additional scanning electron and optical microscopy were performed. The combination of the CT-data with the measured backside temperatures of the different samples provides us a deep understanding of the interaction between isolating properties and morphology of intumescent chars. Experiences from the electrochemical characterization of materials in aqueous solutions are transferred to molten salts, providing a good addition to common exposure tests at temperatures from 450 0C to 600 0C. The formation of the protein corona has a significant impact on the biodistribution and clearance of nanoparticles in vivo. Therefore, the ability to influence the formation of the protein corona is essential to most biomedical applications, including drug delivery and imaging. In this study, we investigate the protein adsorption on nanoparticles with a hydrodynamic radius of 30 nm and a coating of thermoresponsive poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) in serum. Using multiangle dynamic light scattering (DLS) we demonstrate that heating of the nanoparticles above their phase separation temperature induces the formation of agglomerates, with a hydrodynamic radius of 1 µm. In serum, noticeably stronger agglomeration occurs at lower temperatures compared to serum-free conditions. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) revealed a high packing density of agglomerates when serum was not present. In contrast, in the presence of serum, agglomerated nanoparticles were loosely packed, indicating that proteins are intercalated between them. Moreover, an increase in protein content is observed upon heating, confirming that protein adsorption is induced by the alteration of the surface during phase separation. After cooling and switching the surface back, most of the agglomerates were dissolved and the main fraction returned to the original size of approximately 30 nm as shown by asymmetrical flow-field flow fractionation (AF-FFF) and DLS. Furthermore, the amounts of adsorbed proteins are similar before and after heating the nanoparticles to above their phase-separation temperature. Overall, our results demonstrate that the thermoresponsivity of the polymer coating enables turning the corona formation on nanoparticles on and off in situ. As the local heating of body areas can be easily done in vivo, the thermoresponsive coating could potentially be used to induce the agglomeration of nanoparticles and proteins and the accumulation of nanoparticles in a targeted body region. Therefore, this paper aims to present a new strategy for the shaping of a bioglass-ceramic with controlled geometry and properties starting from a glass powder combined with a preceramic polymer, i.e. a silicon resin, and reactive fillers. The powder-based three-dimensional (3D)-printing of wollastonite (CaSiO3)-based silicate bioceramic parts was demonstrated in this work. The resin plays a dual role, as it not only acts as a non-sacrificial binder for the filler powders in the printing process but it also reacts with the fillers to generate the desired bioceramic phases. The mechanical and physical properties, i.e. ball-on-three-balls test, density, porosity and morphology, were evaluated in 3D-printed discs. These samples possessed a total porosity around 64 vol% and a biaxial flexural strength around 6 MPa. The raw materials used in this work also enabled the 3D-printing of scaffolds possessing a designed multi-scale porosity, suitable bioceramic phase assemblage and a compressive strength of 1 MPa (for cylindrical scaffolds with total porosity ~80 vol%). Solubility in TRIS/HCl and in vitro assays, i.e. viability, cytotoxicity and apoptosis assays, were also performed. In vitro tests indicated good cell viability and no cytotoxicity effect on the cells. Since silver salts can cause severe problems, such as cluster formation, fragmentation of polymer chains and end group cleavage, their substitution by alkali salts is highly desirable. Methods The influence of various cations (Ag+, Cs+ and Rb+) on the MALDI process of polystyrene (PS) mixtures and high mass polystyrenes was examined. The sample preparation was kept as straightforward as possible. Consequently, no recrystallization or other cleaning procedures were applied. Results The investigation of a polystyrene mixture showed that higher molecular polystyrenes could be more easily ionized using caesium, rather than rubidium or silver salts. In combination with the use of DCTB as matrix a high-mass polymer analysis could be achieved, which was demonstrated by the detection of a 1.1 MDa PS. Conclusions A fast, simple and robust MALDI sample preparation method for the analysis of ultra-high molecular weight polystyrenes based on the use of DCTB and caesium salts has been presented. The suitability of the presented method has been validated by using different mass spectrometers and detectors. T1 - Sintering and piezoelectric properties of K0.5Na0.5NbO3 glass microspheres N2 - Laser-fused K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN) powder of 75% transparent fraction has been sintered by pressureless sintering, spark plasma sintering (SPS), and hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The laser-fused KNN has a fictive temperature of 503 °C and an onset crystallization temperature of around 529 °C. The results have shown that sintering of the laser-fused KNN powder utilizing the viscous flow of the transparent microspheres (amorphous content)–at the kinetic window (26 °C)–is possible. The highest yield relative density is around 83% at a sintering temperature of 525 °C and at a sintering pressure of 280 MPa. Limited density has been reached because of formation of crystalline surface layers around the amorphous areas. The samples hipped at 525 °C have low piezoelectric coefficient d33 of 5 pC/N because of the residual porosity that led to early dielectric breakdown during the polarization. The sintering behavior, the resulting microstructure as well as the measured properties will be discussed. T1 - Recent experiences on suitability of titanium and high alloyed materials in acids at 200°C N2 - In the literature there are not much data available to describe the corrosion behavior of titanium, nickel alloys and special stainless steels in acids at high temperature, in particular above the boiling point. Therefore, a laboratory testing program was performed with two titanium alloys (UNS R50400 and UNS R53400) to obtain corrosion data in formic acid, acetic acid, phosphoric acid, polyphosphoric acid, p-toluene sulfonic acid and lactic acid at 200 °C. Results were compared to previously published ones obtained on UNS N08031, UNS N06059 and UNS N10665. From the results it can be concluded that titanium does not always show better corrosion resistance than Ni-based alloys. UNS N06059 was the best choice for formic and acetic acids at temperatures of 200 °C. Both Ti-alloys are resistant in acetic acid. Some slight differences were observed for formic acid, where UNS R50400 is only resistant up to a 20 % solution and UNS R53400 in concentrated acid too. The phosphoric acid is extremely corrosive and none of the investigated materials was resistant. In the diluted acid (5 %) only UNS R53400 is resistant, whereas in 1 % solution all investigated materials performed satisfactory. UNS N10665 and UNS N06059 showed the best behavior in polyphosphoric acid. In 30 % concentrated p-toluene sulfonic acid at 200 °C all alloys tested were unsuitable. In very diluted acid (0.1 %) both Ti-alloys and the other three alloys behaved well. In lactic acid at 180 °C increased corrosion underneath deposits was detected; the best performance was observed for UNS N06059 and UNS R50400. These high-molecular weight polymer layers were used as adhesion promoters in carbon fiber–epoxy resin composites. Within the ESI process, the carbon fibers were completely enwrapped with polymer in the upper 10 plies of a carbon fiber roving. As identified with scanning electron microscopy also shadowed fibers in a bundle as well as backsides of fiber rovings were pinhole-free coated with polymers (‘electrophoretic effect'). Under the conditions used, the layers have a granular structure. Residual solvent was absent in the deposit. PAA and PHEMA films did not show any changes in composition and structure in comparison with the original polymers as analyzed by X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Single-fiber pullout tests of coated fibers embedded in epoxy resin showed significantly increased interfacial shear strength. Inductively coupled plasma-MS measurements were used to estimate a maximum of 10% of the crude sample by mass was the 2-arm Eu-PEG complex, supporting evidence of selective ionization of Eu-PEG complexes using the new MAI matrix, 1,2-dicyanobenzene. Multiply charged ions formed in MAI enhance the IMS gas-phase separation, especially relative to the singly charged ions observed with MALDI. Individual components are cleanly separated and readily identified, allowing characterization of the 2-arm Eu-PEG conjugate from a mixture of the 1-arm Eu-PEG complex and unreacted starting materials. Fungi were an important component of these biofilms; very few phototrophs were found. Major microorganisms detected were melanised meristematic ascomycetes and pigmented bacterial genera Arthrobacter and Tetracoccus. While diverse algae, cyanobacteria and bacteria were identified in biofilms at 6 and 12 months, diversity at a later stage was reduced to that typical for SAB: the only fungal group detected in 18 month biofilm was the meristematic Dothideomycetes and the only phototrophs Ulothrix and Chlorella. Photovoltaic modules showed significant power reductions after 6, 12 (both 7%) and 18 (11%) months. The lack of difference in power reduction between 6 and 12 months reflects the dual nature of soiling, which can result from the deposition of particulates as well as from SAB fouling. Although 12-month old SAB demonstrated an almost 10-fold increase in fungal colonization and a higher organic content, the larger non-microbial particles (above 10 µm), which were important for efficiency reduction of lightly-biofilmed panels, were removed by high rainfall just before the 12-month sampling.
