Starting from an introduction into important basic questions of failure analysis and fracture mechanics, the authors specify what kind of questions in failure analysis can be effectively solved by fracture mechanics (and which can't). They illustrate their discussion with a number of 13 case studies from the literature. Much more pronounced than in the design stage the benefit of fracture mechanics in failure analysis depends on its accuracy. This is limited by both, intrinsic factors of the method and the availability and quality of the input information. The authors discuss the various aspects and provide the reader with some background information which, as they believe, will be helpful for better understanding the prospects and limitations of fracture mechanics in failure analysis and the conditions of its application. Here, the dynamic calorimetric glass transition of ultrathin films of a blend, which is miscible in the bulk, is directly investigated by specific heat spectroscopy. By a self-assembling process, a nanometer thick surface layer with a higher molecular mobility is formed at the polymer/air interface. By measuring the dynamic calorimetric Tg in dependence on the film thickness, it was shown that the Tg of the whole film was strongly influenced by that nanometer thick surface layer, with a lower Tg. Since the observed thickness dependence of the dynamic Tg is similar to the thickness dependence of the Tg for thin films of homopolymers, it is concluded that also for homopolymer a highly mobile surface layer is relevant for the widely observed Tg depression. In recent years, classical organic fluorophores have increasingly been displaced by luminescent nanoparticles. These consist of either polymer or silica based beads that are loaded with luminescent dyes, conjugated polymers, or inorganic nanomaterials such as semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots), colloidal clusters of silver and gold, or carbon dots. Among the inorganic materials, photon upconversion nanocrystals exhibit a high potential for application to bioimaging or biomolecular assays. They offer an exceptionally high photostability, can be excited in the NIR, and their anti-Stokes emission enables luminescence detection free of background and perturbing scatter effects even in complex biological samples. These lanthanide doped inorganic crystals have multiple emission lines that can be tuned by the selection of the dopants. This review article is focused on the applications of functionalized photon upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) to chemical sensing. This is a comparatively new field of research activity and mainly directed at the sensing and imaging of ubiquitous chemical analytes in biological samples, particularly in living cells. For this purpose, the particles have to be functionalized with suitable indicator dyes or recognition elements, as they do not show an intrinsic or specific luminescence response to most of these analytes (e.g. pH, oxygen, metal ions). We describe the strategies for the design of such responsive nanocomposites utilizing either luminescence resonance energy transfer or emission–reabsorption (inner filter effect) mechanisms and also highlight examples for their use either immobilized in sensor layers or directly as nanoprobes for intracellular sensing and imaging. Different sizes of brass and stainless steel (SS 304L) rods varying from 25.4 mm to 50.8 mm in length and 25.4 mm in diameter are used as specimens in this study. Experiments are conducted with each body inside a diesel pool fire of different diameters, namely 0.5 m, 0.7 m and 1.0 m. The temperature history of the body engulfed in a pool fire is measured to compute the thermal energy absorbed by the lumped body. Using an energy balance, the total energy is divided into three different components. The gas velocity in the flame is measured to be 1.53 m/s to 1.79 m/s for the diesel pool fires of 0.5 m to 1.0 m in diameter. The dominant mode of heat transfer in this study is radiative in nature. This simple model is reasonably able to predict the heat flux incident on to the lumped bodies engulfed by diesel pool fires using the measured temperature history. A three dimensional formulation for an axi-symmetric pool fire of a measured flame shape, flame temperature and a gray flame absorption coefficient is employed to predict the temperature of the body engulfed in pool fires. This formulation has to be modified to capture the absolute temperature values of the flame. Pluronic™) in optical imaging of pH values, local oxygen and temperature. The material is highly biocompatible and easy to handle. We also show that the material is well permeable to oxygen (thus making it a good choice for use in oxygen sensors), and is stable in liquid solution and at elevated temperature. We demonstrate its applicability in optical sensors for oxygen, pH and temperature. This was accomplished by incorporating appropriate luminescent probes in various kinds of microparticles (which act as hosts for the probes and prevent dye leaching and aggregation), and then dispersing the microparticles in the thermogelating polymer. The resulting sensor gels were deposited on the surface of interest via spraying at temperatures of <20 °C. At these temperatures, the gels adhere well to the target, even on uneven surfaces such as skin, wounds, and bacterial cultures. If temperature is risen to above 25 °C, the gels form a thin and soft but solid sensing layer which, however, can be simply removed from surface of interest by cooling and wiping it off, or by washing with water. Sprayable thermogelating sensors present obvious advantages over other sensors by not causing damage to the surface of interest. N2 - Transport and storage casks for medium and high level radioactive waste are subjected to extreme heavy loads during the accidental drop scenarios prescribed by IAEA regulations and national storage acceptance criteria. Subsequently, considerable efforts have been made to optimize impact limiting structures aiming to reduce cask stresses and deformations. Though, their benefits can only fully be exploited, if the energy absorbing behavior is reliable simulated by numerical models which play an increasingly important role in safety assessments. BAM has had conducted the 5-years research project ENREA in order to overcome the problems caused by the use of simplified, not sufficiently validated or even defective computational concepts for damping materials. While major results of the just recently completed program will be presented, the focus is laid on the question whether these Outputs provide a solid foundation for approximating impact limiting structures in all relevant configurations. So far, material models have been implemented for spruce, Polyurethane foams and damping concrete based mainly on small and medium scale compression test results. The experimental program performed at BAM comprised likewise guided drop tests and, especially for concrete, penetration tests. Although the resulting numerical simulations showed good agreement with measured values, it turned out to be necessary to consider further effects with regard to e.g. multiaxial stress States, shearfailures of shock absorbing components and their interaction with enclosed or enclosing structures. From the structural data (X-ray diffraction analysis and electron paramagnetic resonance, UV/Vis and IR spectroscopy), as the number of secondary amine groups of the macrocyclic ring substituted with propionic acid groups increases, the distortion from square pyramidal to trigonal bipyramidal increases, and this is expected to lead to relatively low complex stabilities. This is confirmed by in vitro studies with superoxide dismutase (SOD) and human serum challenge experiments as well as by biodistribution data with the 64Cu-labelled complexes. Tensile as well as shear strength can be measured for multiple test specimens simultaneously within a very short time. The experimental procedure is described from sample preparation, application of adhesives, sample mounting within the centrifuge to testing parameters and sequences. All requirements of DIN EN 15870 are fulfilled and, in addition, a higher throughput and a better reproducibility can be obtained. The experimental results are discussed regarding bonding strength development over time, comparison of tensile and shear strength and various testing conditions. Furthermore, an additional application field of centrifuge technology is described with respect to the determination of the adhesive strength of coatings. The novel centrifuge based technology provides the determination of bonding, adhesive and shear strength on a statistical basis under identical testing conditions for up to eight samples. Moreover, sophisticated two-sided sample clamping, necessary for a tensile testing machine, is replaced by a simple plug-in procedure. Its underlying fate mechanisms and influences on plant growth are still largely unknown. Our goal was to understand OMW organic matter (OMW-OM) degradation in soil and its phytotoxic effects. We hypothesized that OMW phytotoxicity decreased with degradation of its phenolic components. Methods In a 60 day incubation study, we monitored soil respiration, extractable total phenolic content (TPC) and carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) of OMW treated Israeli soil. The soil was extracted using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and its extracts were exemplarily analyzed for four phenolic substances by LC/MS. Phytotoxicity of soil and soil extracts were tested using a Lepidium sativum seed germination bioassay. Results Soil respiration was 2.5 times higher for OMW treated soil with two respiration maxima and indicated a degradation of up to 27 % of the added OMW-OM. Four phases of OMW-OM degradation were identified: (i) degradation of easily degradable OMW-OM and transformation of phenolic compounds, (ii) intermediate suppression of phytotoxicity, (iii) degradation of phytotoxic phenolic compounds and (iv) significant physical immobilization of phytotoxic compounds. Conclusion Environmental conditions during and after OMW disposal on soil ought to favor fast degradation of OMW-OM, minimizing their physical immobilization and phytotoxic effects. These impact limiters shall ensure the transport cask meets the IAEA safety requirements. After damage caused by the mechanical tests the package has to withstand a severe fire scenario. According to the regulations during and following the fire test, the specimen shall not be artificially cooled and any combustion of materials of the package shall be permitted to proceed naturally. Due to results of the French institute IRSN it was shown that after the fire test an additional energy supply from a pre-damaged impact limiter should be taken into account. The combustion or smouldering of wood was of interest. BAM started a first test phase to examine the issue of combustion for such kind of package components. The goal was to understand the phenomena under the consideration of relevant regulatory boundary conditions. Several metal buckets were filled with wood and equipped with thermocouples. The test specimens have been prepared with different damage arrangements to take the influence of the mechanical tests into account. This paper shows the experimental Setup and the conduction of the tests. The first test shows that pre-damaged metal encapsulations can lead to smouldering of the wood and with this to a Supplement energy release after the end of the 30 minute fire. This work focuses on the photocatalytic degradation of toluene, butyl acetate and limonene under UV LED light and blue LED light in emission test chambers under controlled climatic conditions. For the package Iid system a 9 m drop onto the unyielding target with Iid side downwards is often the most damaging orientation. The impact Ioads acting on the Iid in this orientation result mainly from interaction between Iid and internal content. In case of a movable content its impact onto the inner side of the Iid can cause additional Ioad peaks on the Iid and the Iid bolts. The intensity of the internal collision depends on the position of content relating to Iid at the time of package first contact with target. Due to physical limitations an axial gap, which could be set in "pre-drop" configuration of package or which could spontaneously appear during the drop test, usually does not cover the maximum size possible in specific package design. However, its high cost and limited availability demand that IrO2 is utilized as efficiently as possible. We report the synthesis and OER performance of highly active mesoporous IrO2 catalysts with optimized surface area, intrinsic activity, and pore accessibility. Catalytic layers with controlled pore size were obtained by soft-templating with micelles formed from amphiphilic block copolymers poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(butadiene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide). A systematic study on the influence of the calcination temperature and film thickness on the morphology, phase composition, accessible surface area, and OER activity reveals that the catalytic performance is controlled by at least two independent factors, that is, accessible surface area and intrinsic activity per accessible site. Catalysts with lower crystallinity show higher intrinsic activity. The catalyst surface area increases linearly with film thickness. As a result of the templated mesopores, the pore surface remains fully active and accessible even for thick IrO2 films. Microcracks accelerate material failure and wear during this phase of heightened friction. With this in mind, the ultimate goal of this current work is to transfer the running-in phase into the final step of the mechanical finishing process through the targeted pre-conditioning of novel, high toughness steel bearings without thermo-chemical treatments and compare these to conventional, case-hardened steels. This pre-conditioning involved the targeted implementation of two specific lubricant packages, the first with CaCO3 as the active ingredient and the second with MoDTC as the active ingredient, to generate chemically reactive tribolayers (tribofilms) on twin disk testing rigs. Pre-conditioning was carried out up to 104 load cycles (approximately 25 min). The films generated in pre-conditioning were analyzed by SEM-EDX with Element-Mapping, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS to elucidate their molecular composition and concentration on the sample surfaces. The combination of these methods of analysis gave a clear indication that 104 cycles were sufficient to generate stable chemical tribofilms. CaO and CaCO3 were the main components of the tribofilm from the first lubricant package, while MoS2, MoO2 and MoO3 were the main components from the second lubricant package. Tribofilm-protected samples were then subjected to slip-rolling endurance testing (T=+120 °C, 10,000,000 cycles, approximately 19 days in a factory fill engine oil) to determine any changes in friction behavior or wear performance. Some significant reductions in coefficients of friction at the end of endurance testing were observed, though in certain cases, no definitive improvement was observed. In contrast, very strong reductions in wear were observed across the entire spectrum of materials and testing loads. In some cases, sample surface wear reduction from pre-conditioning via tribofilms reached over 90%. The observed improvements to friction behavior and wear performance are indicative of a technically simple, cost- and energy-efficient pre-conditioning method that may prove to be competitive with existing thermochemical treatments for steel alloys. Ein Großteil der Fertigungskosten in der Mikro- und Nanotechnik wird durch Reinräume und die Umsetzung ausgeklügelter Reinigungsstrategien zur Vermeidung von Restverschmutzungen und partikulären Belegungen verursacht, da diese unweigerlich zum Bauteilversagen führen. Die Validierung des Reinigungszustandes ist somit von zentraler Bedeutung für die Schichtqualität und Produktfunktionalität. Dies gilt in Abhängigkeit von der Applikation und den vertikalen Schicht- bzw. lateralen Strukturdimensionen sowohl für Fertigungsprozesse im Reinraum als auch für solche in robuster Umgebung. Therefore frequently used sealing materials such as FKM (fluorocarbon rubber), FVMQ (methyl-fluoro-silicone rubber), VMQ (methyl-vinyl-silicone rubber), EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene rubber), CR (chloroprene rubber), CSM (chlorosulfonated polyethylene), IIR (butyl rubber), PA (polyamides), N8R (acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber) and PUR (polyester urethane rubber) were exposed to E1 0, diese I fuel with 5% biodiesel, non-aged and 2 year aged 810 (heating oil with 10% biodiesel), and for comparison to pure diese! fuel, standard heating oil and Super plus without bioethanol at 20 °C, 40 oc and 70 oc for 84 days. Mass, tensile strength and breaking elongation of the test specimens were determined before and after the exposure. The visual examination of some elastomer test specimens clearly showed the great volume increase until break or partial dissolution. Shore hardness A and D (for PA) were determined before and after exposure of the test specimens to the biofuels for 42 days. There is not determined a threshold for the reduction in tensile properties and Shore hardness in the international standards. Therefore a threshold of 15% was determined for the evaluation of the compatibility. The sealing materials FKM, EPDM, N8R, FMVQ, CSM and PA were evaluated on the basis of this threshold as resistant in E1 0 at 20 oc and 40 °C. FKM, FVMQ and PA were resistant at 40 oc , and none of the materials were resistant at 70 °C. FKM and FVMQ absorbed much less 810 and swelled less. CR, CSM, EPDM, IIR, N8R and VMQ were not resistant to 810 at all at 20 oc, 40 oc and 70 oc as the decrease in the tensile properties was significantly over 50%. FVMQ and PA could be evaluated as resistant in non-aged and two year aged 810 at 20 oc and 40 oc, whereas FKM was resistant up to 70 °C. FKM, PA and PUR were evaluated as resistant in standard heating oil and pure diese! fuel at temperatures up to 40°C, only FKM was resistant up to 70°C. FVMQ, FKM, N8R, VMQ, CR and IIR can be evaluated as resistant in premium grade fuel Super plus without ethanol at 20 oc. FKM, FVMQ, VMQ and IIR were still resistant at 40 °C. However, a challenge is the positioning, both in terms of step detection, step length approximation as well as heading estimation, which must be accurate and robust, even when the use of the device is varied in terms of placement or orientation. In this paper, we propose a scheme for retrieving relevant information to detect steps and to estimate the correct step length from raw inertial measurement unit (IMU) data. This approach uses Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Networks (BLSTM-RNNs). Designed to take contextual information into account, the network can process data gathered from different positions, resulting in a system, which is invariant with respect to transformation and distortions of the input patterns. An experimental evaluation on a dataset produced from 10 individuals demonstrates that this new approach achieves significant improvements over previous attempts and increase the current state-of-the-art results even in the presence of variations and degradations. We achieved a mean classification rate of 98.5% and a standard deviation of 0.70 for 10000 different test sequences and an average error of 1.45% regarding the step length. Thus is the best result on the task gathered in the experiments compared with competing techniques. Our approach utilises an intermediate-scale test set-up (specimen size 500 × 500 mm) to apply realistic compressive loads and fully developed fires directly to one side of a carbon-fibre-reinforced sandwich composite. Three different intumescent coatings were applied to sandwich structures and compared to a bench-scale study. The results emphasise intumescent coatings as a promising method to sustain fire resistance, multiplying the time to failure. Nevertheless, the realistic intermediate-scale test using severe direct flame application underlines the extremely short failure times when the actual composite components are tested without any additional insulation. While the former were apparently free of defects (other than unavoidable point defects), the latter contained two domains separated by a grain boundary. Since atomic ordering can be modeled by space group symmetry descent considerations (Bärnighausen trees) that start with the space group of the known crystallographic phases of random (Mn,Ga)As alloys with specified chemical compositions, reasonable structure hypotheses have been derived for two atomically ordered Mn0.75Ga0.25As phases that we call the trigonal α' and the monoclinic β' phases. The implications of these structure hypotheses are in agreement with the results of a range of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and parallel illumination electron diffraction (ED) studies that include quantitative energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray spectroscopic imaging, as well nanobeam diffraction and high angle precession ED. The microstructure is characterised by elongated LPSO fibers along the extrusion direction within the magnesium matrix. Moreover, the magnesium matrix presents a bimodal grain structure with dynamically-recrystallized grains and deformed, elongated grains with the basal plane parallel to the extrusion direction. The beginning of plasticity depends on the volume fraction of deformed and DRX grains. Alloys with low volume fraction of LPSO phase (<10 vol%), with a high volume fraction of deformed grains, show the typical behavior of extruded magnesium alloys where yield stress in tension is higher than in compression. Die Norm umfasst die Versuchsdurchführung, die Versuchsauswertung sowie die Dokumentation von lastgeregelten Wöhlerversuchen im Zeit- und Langzeitfestigkeitsbereich. Mit DIN 50100 soll erreicht werden, dass die Wöhlerlinien verschiedener Prüfstellen miteinander vergleichbar und die wesentlichen Randbedingungen der Versuchsdurchführung dokumentiert werden. T1 - Needs for further developing monitoring- and NDT-methods for timber structures N2 - For the assessmentand for monitoring of timber structures there are numerous promising methods that enable the quantitative description of the current condition of construction elements or parts of a structure. This concerns material properties like modulus of elasticity, moisture content and density as well as structural properties like dynamic characteristics, localization of inhomogeneities, cracks, and biological attack. During the work in COST Action FP 1101, since 2012 the capability of experimental methods are discussed and compared. This covers electrical and electromagnetic wave methods (resistivity, microwave, Radar, X-Ray), elastic waves (ultrasound, pile testing) and mechanical testing (static and dynamic). Describing and collecting the use of the experimental methods for monitoring purposes was the objective of working group 3 "Monitoring of Timber Structures" of the COST Action. Monitoring capabilities will extend the use of timber structures to further applications in civil engineering. So far, no standard exists but collections of application examples and review papers representing the state of the art. From there needs for further developments regarding monitoring and NDT methods for timber structures can be identified and these are described in this paper.
