Werden in der Schwingfestigkeitsbewertung Gesamtlebensdauern ermittelt, so sind es in der Bruchmechanik Restlebensdauern bei Vorhandensein eines größeren, d.h., bereits zerstörungsfrei auffindbaren Risses. Daneben gibt es seit längerem Bestrebungen, bruchmechanische Ansätze auch für die Ermittlung der Gesamtlebensdauer fruchtbar zu machen. Der besondere Wert einer solchen Kombination besteht darin, dass die Bruchmechanik die explizite theoretische Behandlung von Eingangsparametern (Kerben, Oberflächenrauhigkeit, Mittelspannung, etc.) erlaubt, die in den konventionellen Ansätzen mit vergleichsweise hoher Ungenauigkeit halbempirisch einbezogen werden. Der Beitrag stellt einen von den Autoren entwickelten bruchmechanischen Ansatz zur Ermittlung von Wöhlerkurven vor, der eine Reihe innovativer Merkmale wie die Anwendung der elastischplastischen Bruchmechanik auf kurze Risse, die Ermittlung der Ausgangsrissgröße aus Rissarrestbetrachtungen, die Beschreibung der transienten Entwicklung des Rissschließeffekts mit Hilfe zyklischer R-Kurven (Risslängenabhängigkeit des Schwellenwertes von der Risstiefe), die theoretische Erfassung von Mehrfachrisswachstum bei Lastniveaus oberhalb der Dauerfestigkeit und statistische Aspekte umfasst. Subsequently, considerable efforts have been made to optimize impact limiting structures aiming to reduce cask stresses and deformations. Though, their benefits can only fully be exploited, if the energy absorbing behavior is reliable simulated by numerical models which play an increasingly important role in safety assessments. BAM has had conducted the 5-years research project ENREA in order to overcome the problems caused by the use of simplified, not sufficiently validated or even defective computational concepts for damping materials. While major results of the just recently completed program will be presented, the focus is laid on the question whether these Outputs provide a solid foundation for approximating impact limiting structures in all relevant configurations. So far, material models have been implemented for spruce, Polyurethane foams and damping concrete based mainly on small and medium scale compression test results. The experimental program performed at BAM comprised likewise guided drop tests and, especially for concrete, penetration tests. Although the resulting numerical simulations showed good agreement with measured values, it turned out to be necessary to consider further effects with regard to e.g. multiaxial stress States, shearfailures of shock absorbing components and their interaction with enclosed or enclosing structures. These impact limiters shall ensure the transport cask meets the IAEA safety requirements. After damage caused by the mechanical tests the package has to withstand a severe fire scenario. According to the regulations during and following the fire test, the specimen shall not be artificially cooled and any combustion of materials of the package shall be permitted to proceed naturally. Due to results of the French institute IRSN it was shown that after the fire test an additional energy supply from a pre-damaged impact limiter should be taken into account. The combustion or smouldering of wood was of interest. BAM started a first test phase to examine the issue of combustion for such kind of package components. The goal was to understand the phenomena under the consideration of relevant regulatory boundary conditions. Several metal buckets were filled with wood and equipped with thermocouples. The test specimens have been prepared with different damage arrangements to take the influence of the mechanical tests into account. This paper shows the experimental Setup and the conduction of the tests. The first test shows that pre-damaged metal encapsulations can lead to smouldering of the wood and with this to a Supplement energy release after the end of the 30 minute fire. The consequence could be, to consider additional thermal loads of wood filled impact limiters to filled the IAEA regulations, if the conditions of the tests are transferable to the safety analysis of the package design. Photocatalysis is one opportunity to improve the indoor air quality by degrading VOCs ideally to carbon dioxide and water. Titanium dioxide (Ti02) in its anatase modification (band gap of 3.2 eV) is a common used UV-active photocatalytic coating. Because of the lack of UV light indoors Ti02 needs to be modified to be active under visible light too. This work focuses on the photocatalytic degradation of toluene, butyl acetate and limonene under UV LED light and blue LED light in emission test chambers under controlled climatic conditions. These compounds were selected due to their frequent occurrence in the indoor environment and their supply was done with a gas mixing System. Zusätzlich werden in weiteren Versuchen die während einer Deflagration entstehende Gasmenge und die Gasentwicklungsrate bestimmt. Abschließend werden die Druck- und Gasentwicklungsraten miteinander verglichen. The validation of test results showed that the autoclave is suited for the performance of deflagration tests. In comparison to tests performed in an open system according to VDI 2263-1 the results are in good agreement. In the closed vessel same characteristics as in the open test were determined. In addition, pressure rise and rate of pressure rise have been determined and used to characterise deflagrations. The influence of sample weight, tube diameter, bulk density, initial pressure and temperature was investigated. Furthermore, the emerging gas amount and the rate of gas evolution were determined and compared with pressure curves. According to the regulatory requirements the orientation of the package in drop tests shall be such to cause the most damaged state in the components performing the safety functions. For the package Iid system a 9 m drop onto the unyielding target with Iid side downwards is often the most damaging orientation. The impact Ioads acting on the Iid in this orientation result mainly from interaction between Iid and internal content. In case of a movable content its impact onto the inner side of the Iid can cause additional Ioad peaks on the Iid and the Iid bolts. The intensity of the internal collision depends on the position of content relating to Iid at the time of package first contact with target. Due to physical limitations an axial gap, which could be set in "pre-drop" configuration of package or which could spontaneously appear during the drop test, usually does not cover the maximum size possible in specific package design. In this context, the combination of drop tests with post-test analysis can be helpful to better estimate the effect of internal impact. The paper summarizes some aspects of this issue based on the BAM experience in the design assessment of Type B(U) transport packages. Therefore frequently used sealing materials such as FKM (fluorocarbon rubber), FVMQ (methyl-fluoro-silicone rubber), VMQ (methyl-vinyl-silicone rubber), EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene rubber), CR (chloroprene rubber), CSM (chlorosulfonated polyethylene), IIR (butyl rubber), PA (polyamides), N8R (acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber) and PUR (polyester urethane rubber) were exposed to E1 0, diese I fuel with 5% biodiesel, non-aged and 2 year aged 810 (heating oil with 10% biodiesel), and for comparison to pure diese! fuel, standard heating oil and Super plus without bioethanol at 20 °C, 40 oc and 70 oc for 84 days. Mass, tensile strength and breaking elongation of the test specimens were determined before and after the exposure. The visual examination of some elastomer test specimens clearly showed the great volume increase until break or partial dissolution. Shore hardness A and D (for PA) were determined before and after exposure of the test specimens to the biofuels for 42 days. There is not determined a threshold for the reduction in tensile properties and Shore hardness in the international standards. Therefore a threshold of 15% was determined for the evaluation of the compatibility. The sealing materials FKM, EPDM, N8R, FMVQ, CSM and PA were evaluated on the basis of this threshold as resistant in E1 0 at 20 oc and 40 °C. FKM, FVMQ and PA were resistant at 40 oc , and none of the materials were resistant at 70 °C. FKM and FVMQ absorbed much less 810 and swelled less. CR, CSM, EPDM, IIR, N8R and VMQ were not resistant to 810 at all at 20 oc, 40 oc and 70 oc as the decrease in the tensile properties was significantly over 50%. FVMQ and PA could be evaluated as resistant in non-aged and two year aged 810 at 20 oc and 40 oc, whereas FKM was resistant up to 70 °C. FKM, PA and PUR were evaluated as resistant in standard heating oil and pure diese! fuel at temperatures up to 40°C, only FKM was resistant up to 70°C. FVMQ, FKM, N8R, VMQ, CR and IIR can be evaluated as resistant in premium grade fuel Super plus without ethanol at 20 oc. FKM, FVMQ, VMQ and IIR were still resistant at 40 °C. FKM and FVMQ were evaluated as resistant with restrictions at 70 °C. ln summary, it can be therefore stated that the chemical resistance of the fluoropolymers FKM and FVMQ in fuels and biofuels is the best one. However, a challenge is the positioning, both in terms of step detection, step length approximation as well as heading estimation, which must be accurate and robust, even when the use of the device is varied in terms of placement or orientation. In this paper, we propose a scheme for retrieving relevant information to detect steps and to estimate the correct step length from raw inertial measurement unit (IMU) data. This approach uses Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Networks (BLSTM-RNNs). Designed to take contextual information into account, the network can process data gathered from different positions, resulting in a system, which is invariant with respect to transformation and distortions of the input patterns. An experimental evaluation on a dataset produced from 10 individuals demonstrates that this new approach achieves significant improvements over previous attempts and increase the current state-of-the-art results even in the presence of variations and degradations. We achieved a mean classification rate of 98.5% and a standard deviation of 0.70 for 10000 different test sequences and an average error of 1.45% regarding the step length. Thus is the best result on the task gathered in the experiments compared with competing techniques. T1 - Specification of the limit temperature Texo for a peroxide synthesis using different estimation methods N2 - A major item of thermal process safety, concerning the industrial realisation of exothermic reactions, is the determination of a temperature, where a reaction can be carried out without risk for humans, environment, and of economic loss. The so-called limit temperature Texo is a safety parameter for the reaction process and should not be mixed up with the Self Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT). The last one refers to a temperature value for safe transportation including specific conditions like transport time and type of containment. In Germany a technical guide (Identification and Control of Exothermic Chemical Reactions, TRAS 410, 2012) specifies three approaches for determining Texo. In this work, all these approaches were applied to specify Texo for the synthesis of three tert-Butyl peroxycarboxylic esters. Peroxycarboxylic esters are a subdivision of organic peroxides, known for their high hazardous potential. Results differed partly significant. Anyhow, all of the used techniques and evaluation methods led to Texo values, which were on the safe side – taken the Texo value estimated by the heat release criterion as reference. The installation was constructed from plastic pipes, the hot water tank from stainless steel. A source for the lead contamination was not obvious, cleaning of the tank and the pipes did result in low lead levels after the cleaning but these rose again after short Operation times. Water samples and samples from the installation were taken and analysed. The high lead values for hot water circulation were confirmed, the cold water System showed no detectable lead values. Metallographie investigations showed selective corrosion of various pipe fittings from dezincification resistant brass. The cause of the lead contamination was the selective corrosion of brass combined with a long retention time of the hot water in the circulation System. Ultrashort pulse lasers offer the possibility to process bulky transparent materials in three dimensions, suggesting that direct laser writing will play a decisive role in the development of integrated micro-optics. At the present time, applications such as 3D long term data storage or embedded laser marking are already into the phase of industrial development. However, a quantitative estimate of the laser-induced refractive index change is still very challenging to obtain. On another hand, several microscopy techniques have been recently developed to characterize bulk refractive index changes in-situ. They have been mostly applied to biological purposes. Among those, spatial light interference microscopy (SLIM), offers a very good robustness with minimal post acquisition data processing. In this paper, we report on using SLIM to measure fs-laser induced refractive index changes in different common glassy materials, such as fused silica and borofloat glass (B33). The advantages of SLIM over classical phase-contrast microscopy are discussed. In addition, the microstructure and mechanical properties of HPNbCl and NbC bonded with 8 vol.-% and 12 vol.-% cobalt were determined as well. The tribological data obtained were benchmarked with different ceramics, cermets, hard metals and thermally sprayed coatings, where the NbCs bonded with 8% and 12% Co presented above 7 m/s the lowest wear rates so far in such a bench mark. HP-NbCl, NbC-8Co and NbC-12Co exhibited low wear rates under dry sliding associated with PV high load carrying capacities. The tribological profile established revealed a strong position of NbC bearing materials under tribological considerations and for closed tribo-systems against traditional references. Durch eine Vorkonditionierung mittels modifizierter Schmierstoffe oder durch Kaltverfestigung kann der Verschleiß in Wälzkontakten signifikant erniedrigt werden. Bislang ausgeblieben ist eine deutliche Reibungsminderung, aber es wurde keine Reibungserhöhung gemessen. Die ungesättigten TMP-Ester + 1 Gew% DBDS zeigten eine um 45% geringere Reibung als PAO + ZnDTP (Referenz) und die Reibung PPG + DBDS war immerhin 30% niedriger. N2 - 3 different base-stocks (poly-a-olefin, polypropylene glycol and unsaturated TMP ester) and these blended with 2 different additives (1wt% ZnDTP or 1wt% dibenzyl disulfide(DBDS)) were used as lubricants to evaluate the tribological properties of AA6061-T6 treated by means of plasma electrolytic oxidation in a SRV tribometer (Toi|=80 °C, Fn = 50N, v= 50 Hz, 2mm stroke, 2hrs). The base oils of PPG and the TMP-ester had better lubricities than the PAO with/without the additives. ZnDTP tend to reduce wear, but when added to PAO and PPG increased the friction. Die Verschleißkoeffizienten der DLC-Dünnschichten lagen im Bereich von kleiner als 10~7 mm3/Nm bis herunter zu 10"9 mm3/Nm. N2 - This paper presents a dry sliding tribo-couple (DLC/monolithic oxide ceramics), where the tribological quantities are more or less in a wide ränge independent of the sliding speed. The DLC film is composed of a specific mixture of sp3 /sp2 hybridized carbon. Self-mated ceramic/ceramic couples of MgO-Zr02, alpha-AI203 or SSiC are with their coefficients of friction above 0.45 not so lubricious, whereas the coefficients of friction of the tribocouples MgO-Zr02/DLC and alpha-AbOVDLC ranged between 0.075 and 0.15 under dry sliding. The coefficients of friction for these tribo-couples tend to decrease with increase sliding speed from 0.03 m/s to 6 m/s. Typically, slim circular solid sections (CSS) are used for such tension members. However, sufficient knowledge about the performance of reactive fire protection systems (RFPS) applied to solid steel tension members has so far been missing. The application of RFPS on such members was not covered by national German approvals (abZ) as well as European technical assessments (ETA) and therefore only possible by approvals in individual case by the building authority. This paper describes the world’s first scientifically investigated fire tests of RFPS applied to steel tension members with CSS. The influence of various parameters such as profile geometry, dry film thickness of the RFPS, level of the load utilization as well as member orientation was tested. In addition, the foaming and cracking behaviour and thermal protection of the RFPS used are investigated and failure mechanisms are identified. To measure the steel temperature of the tension member without weakening the cross-section a special method for the application of thermocouples was developed. The fire tests show that an application of RFPS on steel tension members with solid section is generally possible. However, due to the slim cross-sections and the missing possibility of load distribution within the tension member, high requirements are placed particularly on the effectiveness and reliability of the RFPS. In particular, the testing of mechanically loaded tension members is essential, since the necessary three-dimensional foaming results in the highest stress level for the RFPS. The findings obtained from the performed fire tests are of general nature. Recommendations for the testing and assessment of RFPS applied to steel tension members with solid section are briefly described in this paper and explained in detail in [1] and [2]. Based on this research, the German building authority (DIBt) has defined national approval guidelines for the testing and the assessment of RFPS applied to tension members with solid section. The radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) of a commercial PF-POF based on Cytop material is measured in the visible spectral region. The fiber RIA shows strong wavelength dependence with rapid increase towards the blue side of the spectrum. The wide range of radiation sensitivities is available via careful selection of appropriate monitoring wavelength. The accessible sensitivities span from 1.6 ± 0.2 dBm-1/kGy measured at 750 nm to 18.3 ± 0.7 dBm-1/kGy measured at 420 nm. The fairly high radiation sensitivity as well as its wide tunability makes the fiber a promising candidate for a broad range of applications. N2 - Experimentelle Untersuchungen zu streifenden Schlägen mit verschiedenen Edelstahlsorten in explosionsfähigen Atmosphären, jeweils bestehend aus Wasserstoff, Acetylen, Ethylen bzw. Propan mit Luft, haben gezeigt, dass deren Zündwahrscheinlichkeit sowohl von der Art des Brenngas-Gemisches als auch der Höhe der kinetischen Schlagenergie abhängt. Ein Einfluss des Chromgehaltes im Edelstahl auf die Zündwahrscheinlichkeit durch mechanisch erzeugte Schlagvorgänge konnte in dem untersuchten Bereich des Chromgehaltes nicht nachgewiesen werden, obwohl ein steigender Chromgehalt die Oxidationsfähigkeit abgetrennter Partikel erhöhter Temperatur tatsächlich senkt. Ferner haben weitere Werkstoffeigenschaften wie die Wärmeleitfähigkeit, spezifische Wärmekapazität, Dichte und Härte einen Einfluss auf die Zündwahrscheinlichkeit mechanischer Edelstahl-Schlagvorgänge bei Wasserstoff/Luft-Gemischen. Mit steigender Wärmeleitfähigkeit des Edelstahls sinkt die Zündwahrscheinlichkeit. Für die spezifische Wärmekapazität, Dichte und Härte konnte kein Einfluss nachgewiesen werden. Für Schlagvorgänge wurden in der Norm EN 13463-1:2009 Grenzwerte für die maximale kinetische Schlagenergie festgelegt, unterhalb derer die Entstehung einer wirksamen Zündquelle als unwahrscheinlich angenommen werden kann. Dabei wurde zwischen Schlagvorgängen mit funkenarmen Metallen, wie z. B. Kupfer, Messing, und Schlagvorgängen mit sogenannten „sonstigen Werkstoffen“ unterschieden. Die Grenzwerte dieser sonstigen Werkstoffe resultieren aus Versuchen der BAM mit unlegiertem Baustahl. Bei solchen Schlagvorgängen wird von Oxidationsprozessen einzelner Partikel mit dem Luftsauerstoff ausgegangen, die das Gasgemisch aufgrund des hohen Temperaturanstiegs entzünden. In industriellen Anwendungen wie zum Beispiel der chemischen Industrie wird jedoch statt ferritischem Stahl überwiegend Edelstahl verwendet. Im Allgemeinen gilt mit Chrom hochlegierter Edelstahl bei Schlagvorgängen gegenüber ferritischem Stahl als funkenärmer, da die Oxidationsfähigkeit von Edelstahlpartikeln mit steigendem Chromgehalt abnimmt. Aufgrund der abnehmenden Oxidationsfähigkeit postulierte Voigtsberger, dass abgetrennte Edelstahlpartikel mit einem Anteil von 18,11 % Chrom nicht mehr oxidieren können. Bei den eigenen Schlagversuchen der BAM konnte zwar eine sinkende Oxidationsfähigkeit der Partikel, aber keine abnehmende Zündwirksamkeit von Edelstählen mit steigendem Chromgehalt beobachtet werden. T1 - Selbstentzündungsverhalten von Feststoffen: Validierung der Extrapolation von Labortests mithilfe halbtechnischer Versuche bis 1 m3 N2 - Vorgestellt wird ein 2018 gestartetes Projekt zur Überprüfung der Extrapolation von im Labormaßstab ermittelten Selbstentzündungstemperaturen auf technisch relevante Volumina. Für die Ermittlung reaktionskinetischer Daten von Feststoffschüttungen stehen eine Reihe von Untersuchungsmethoden zur Verfügung. Dies sind thermische Analysen wie z. B. die differential scanning calorimetry DSC sowie Mikrokalorimetrie zur hochgenauen Messung von Wärmeströmen, bei denen sehr geringe Probenmengen zum Einsatz kommen. In der Regel wird das Selbstentzündungsverhalten jedoch mithilfe von isoperibolen oder adiabaten Warmlagerungsversuchen beurteilt, hier liegen die Probenvolumina üblicherweise im Bereich von ca. 100 cm3 bis zu einigen Litern. Die Extrapolation über mehrere Größenordnungen auf technische Volumina birgt Unsicherheiten, da mit Zunahme des Lagervolumens veränderte Start- und Randbedingungen vorliegen können. Zudem besteht die Möglichkeit, dass bei in technischen Lagern vorherrschenden niedrigen Temperaturen Reaktionen ablaufen, die in Standard- Laborversuchen nicht erfasst werden, aber einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf das Selbstentzündungsverhalten aufweisen können. Hauptziel des Projektes ist es daher, die im Labormaßstab vorhandenen Prüfeinrichtungen durch einen Versuchsstand zur Untersuchung von Probengrößen von bis zu 1000 dm3 zu erweitern, die Eignung (oder Nichteignung) der etablierten Methoden nachzuweisen und im Labormaßstab nicht erfassbare Einflussgrößen zu ermitteln. The cask body is made of ductile cast iron and closed by two bolted lid systems with metal seals. The material of the lids is stainless steel. On each end of the cask the wood-filled impact limiters are installed to reduce impact loads to the cask under drop test conditions. In the cavity of the cask a basket for five spent fuel elements is arranged. This design has been assessed by the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in view to the mechanical and thermal safety analyses, the activity release approaches, and subjects of quality assurance and surveillance for manufacturing and operation of the package. For the mechanical safety analyses of the package a combination of experimental testing and analytical/numerical calculations were applied. In total, four drop tests were carried out at the BAM large drop test facility. Two tests were carried out as a full IAEA drop test sequence consisting of a 9m drop test onto an unyielding target and a 1m puncture bar drop test. The other two drop tests were performed as single 9m drop tests and completed by additional analyses for considering the effects of an IAEA drop test sequence. The main objectives of the drop tests were the investigation of the integrity of the package and its safety against release of radioactive material as well as the test of the fastening system of the impact limiters. Furthermore, the acceleration and strain signals measured during the tests were used for the verification of finite-element (FE) models applied in the safety analysis of the package design. For this purpose, a measurement setup with interchangeable layers is developed to vary the screed material (cement or anhydrite) and insulation material (glass wool, perlite, expanded and extruded polystyrene), as well as the respective layer thickness. The evaluation of the 2 GHz common-offset radar measurements is focused on the extraction of distinctive signal features that can be used to classify the underlying case of damage without any further information about the hidden materials or layer thicknesses. In the collected dataset, we analyze the horizontal distribution of A-scan features in corresponding B-scans to detect water in the insulation layer. Furthermore, possible combinations of these features are investigated with the use of multivariate data analysis and machine learning (logistic regression) in order to evaluate the mutual dependencies. In this study, the combination of an amplitude- and frequency-based feature achieved an accuracy of 93.2 % and performed best to detect a damage in floor insulations. Dabei können Schweißnahtabweichungen auftreten, die aus Änderungen der Prozessrandbedingungen und der hohen Prozessdynamik resultieren. Hier ist die Kontrolle von Schmelzbad- und Schweißnahtgeometrie für die Sicherung der Nahtqualität bedeutsam. Durch den Einsatz optischer Sensorsysteme können mit hoher zeitlicher Auflösung in-situ Informationen des Prozesszustands ermittelt werden. Dabei stellen die rauen Prozessbedingungen und die hohe Strahlungsintensität des Lichtbogens eine Herausforderung für die optischen Komponenten dar. Forschungsarbeiten am Institut für Schweißtechnik und Fügetechnik der RWTH Aachen haben gezeigt, dass durch den Einsatz einer HDR-Kamera in Kombination mit einer strukturierten Laserbelichtung gezielt geometrische Informationen des Lichtbogens und des Schmelzbads aus den Prozessaufnahmen gewonnen werden können. In dieser Arbeit wird eine parallele Schweißnaht- und Schmelzbadbeobachtung durchgeführt, wobei geometrische Informationen durch die Anwendung von Bildverarbeitungsalgorithmen extrahiert werden. Dabei wird ein nachlaufendes Sensorsystem eingesetzt, welches aus einer HDR-Kamera und einer Laserbeleuchtung besteht. Es werden diffraktive optische Elemente (DOE) zur Erzeugung von verschiedenen Laserprojektionsmustern verwendet, um sowohl eine unidirektionale als auch eine multidirektionale Prozessbeobachtung durchführen zu können. Aus den geometrischen Informationen werden Kenngrößen berechnet, anhand derer der Prozesszustand beurteilt werden kann. Encapsulations are needed to guarantee a safe handling and a tight closure, separated from the package enclosure. These encapsulations shall be durable and leak-tight for a long storage period, because they are usually not accessible within periodical inspections of the DPC. Due to the general design of DPCs for standard fuel assemblies, specific requirements have to be considered for the design of encapsulations for DSNF to ensure the loading in existing package designs. Especially the primary lid system of a DPC is designed for maximum loads due to the internal impact of the content during drop test conditions. The main difference of encapsulations for damaged spent nuclear fuel is that they have usually a much higher stiffness than standard fuel assemblies. Therefore the design of an internal shock absorber, e.g. at the head of an encapsulation is required to reduce mechanical loads to the primary lid system during impacts. BAM as part of the German competent authority system is responsible for the safety assessment of the mechanical and thermal package design, the release of radioactive material and the quality assurance of package manufacturing and operation. Concerning the mechanical design of the encapsulation BAM was involved in the comprehensive assessment procedure during the package design approval process. An internal shock absorber was developed by the package designer with numerical analyses and experimental drop tests. Experimental drop tests are needed to cover limiting parameters regarding, e.g. temperature and wall thickness of the shock absorbing element to enable a detailed specification of the whole load-deformation behavior of the encapsulation shock absorber. The paper gives an overview of the assessment work by BAM and points out the main findings which are relevant for an acceptable design of internal shock absorbers. The physical drop tests were planned on the basis of pre-investigations of the applicant concerning shape, dimension and material properties. In advance of the final drop tests the possible internal impact behavior had to be analyzed and the setup of the test facility had to be validated. The planning, performance and evaluation of the final drop tests were witnessed and assessed by BAM. In conclusion it could be approved that the German encapsulation system for damaged spent nuclear fuel with shock absorbing components can be handled similar to standard fuel assemblies in existing package designs. As it has happened in many historical occasions, after an earthquake, earthquakeinduced rupture of gas piping, failure of electrical systems, etc. may trigger fire. The structural fire performance can deteriorate because the fire acts on a previously damaged structure. In addition, the earthquake may have damaged fire protection elements and the fire can spread more rapidly if compartmentation walls have failed. This is particularly relevant for steel structures as the high thermal conductivity of elements with small thickness entails quick temperature rise with consequent fast loss of strength and stiffness. EQUFIRE studied a four-storey three-bay steel frame with concentric bracings in the central bay. The structure was designed for reference peak ground acceleration equal to 0.186g, soil type B and type 1 elastic response spectrum according to Eurocode 8. Tests were performed at the ELSA Reaction Wall and at the furnace of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM). The experimental activities at the ELSA Reaction Wall comprise pseudo-dynamic tests on a full-scale specimen of the first storey of the building, while the upper three storeys are numerically simulated. The aim is to study the response of the structure and fire protection elements, including their interaction, under the design earthquake and for different configurations: bare frame without fire protection, specimen with three fire protection solutions (conventional and seismic-resistant boards, and vermiculite sprayed coating) applied on the bracing and one column, and with conventional and seismic-resistant fire barrier walls built in the two external bays of the specimen. The testing programme at BAM included fire tests of five columns (two specimens without fire protection elements and three specimens with the types of fire protection mentioned above). Before the fire test, each column was subjected to a horizontal and vertical displacement history resulting from the seismic action. During the fire tests, the effect of the surrounding structure was simulated by limiting the axial thermal expansion. The experimental results will serve to study the response of structural and non-structural components to fire following earthquake scenarios, with a view to improving existing design guidelines and future standards. The response of the regular homogeneous and irregular soils has been calculated by the finite-element method in frequency domain. The superposition of the impulse responses yields the quasi-static component of the ground vibration which is restricted to very low frequencies and to the close near-field of the track. In case of an irregular soil or ballast of which the stiffness varies randomly in space, a mid-frequency ground vibration component is generated by the scattering of the axle impulses. Measurements will be shown which prove the existence of the mid-frequency ground vibration component and the unique explanation by the scattered axle impulses: many international measurements with a raised mid-frequency component, axle-box measurements with a too low mid-frequency dynamic load, amplitude-speed dependencies which are incompatible with irregularity-induced dynamic loads, and ground vibration reductions due to stiff track elements. T1 - Natural frequencies and modes of poles, beams, floors, road and rail bridges N2 - In the last three decades, the vibrations of many floors and bridges have been measured. The contribution shows some evaluation methods, experimental results and some modelling and theoretical results. Simple evaluation methods have been developed for single and coupled floors. Two coupled beams have been measured in good agreement with the theory. A more complex coupling model has been found for a large wooden floor in a castle consisting of six floor bays which correlates well with the measurements. Damaged and intact poles have been tested by their natural frequencies and damping values, and a fair correlation between the degree of damage and the shift of the frequency. Road bridges have been analysed in detail and some examples are presented. Railway bridges and trains are studied for resonant excitation. The risk of resonance can be estimated in frequency domain by using axle-sequence spectra of the train and the natural frequencies of the bridge. A measurement example shows the amplification, but even stronger the cancellation of the subsequent axle responses. Several high-speed trains and freight trains have been analysed for their potential resonance amplification.
