Der Fachbereich 7.2 Ingenieurbau der BAM befasst sich seit mittlerweise mehr als 25 Jahren mit der Entwicklung von Methoden und Verfahren dieser Form der Bauwerksüberwachung. Die damit verbundene Tätigkeit umfasst die Beschreibung theoretischer Grundlagen, die Entwicklung von Algorithmen zur Erfassung, Bearbeitung und Auswertung von Messsignalen, die Bewertung der Ergebnisse bezüglich Tragsicherheit, Gebrauchstauglichkeit und Restnutzungsdauer und nicht zuletzt die Untersuchung und Verifizierung der praktischen Anwendbarkeit. Dabei standen insbesondere die sogenannten dynamischen Verfahren im Blickpunkt der Aktivitäten. Ursprünglich zur Überwachung von rotierenden Maschinenkomponenten entwickelt und dann auch erfolgreich zur Überwachung von Bauteilen der Flugzeug-, Raumfahrt- und Automobilindustrie weiterentwickelt, weckten diese Verfahren weltweit das Interesse der sich mit der Sicherheit bestehender Baukonstruktionen befassenden Wissenschaftler und Ingenieure. Ein beachtenswertes Projekt der BAM in diesem Zusammenhang ist die Dauerüberwachung der Westendbrücke in Berlin, das Mitte der 90er Jahre von der damaligen Senatsverwaltung für Stadtentwicklung von Berlin (ehemals Bauen, Wohnen und Verkehr) in Auftrag gegeben und über viele Jahre gefördert wurde. Im Rahmen dieses Aufsatzes werden am Beispiel dieses Projektes, das sich wie ein roter Faden durch die Entwicklungsgeschichte des Monitorings an der BAM zieht, die Motivationen und Zielstellungen dargelegt, das Überwachungssystem vorgestellt und die gemachten Erfahrungen anhand einiger Ergebnisse erläutert. In einem weiteren Kapitel wird ein Ausblick auf die Zukunft des Monitorings mit angepassten Zielvorstellungen, neuen Methodiken und Strategien geworfen. N2 - Censorship of parts of written text was and is a common practice in totalitarian regimes. It is used to destroy information not approved by the political power. Recovering the censored text is of interest for historical studies of the text. This paper raises the question, whether a censored postcard from 1942 can be made legible by applying multispectral imaging in combination with laser cleaning. In the fields of art conservation (e.g. color measurements), investigation (e.g. Analysis of underdrawings in paintings), and historical document analysis, multispectral imaging techniques have been applied successfully to give visibility to information hidden to the human eye. The basic principle of laser cleaning is to transfer laser pulse energy to a contamination layer by an absorption process that leads to heating and evaporation of the layer. Partial laser cleaning of postcards is possible; dirt on the surface can be removed and the obscured pictures and writings made visible again. We applied both techniques to the postcard. The text could not be restored since the original ink seems to have suffered severe chemical damage. Dust cloud ignition is carried out using pyrotechnical igniters. Due to various disadvantages of such igniters the need for alternative ignition sources arises again and again. An alternative ignition source could be the so called 'exploding wire' or 'fuse wire'. The paper presents test results of a comparative study between both ignition sources for the determination of the safety characteristics Maximum Explosion Pressure and Maximum Explosion Pressure Rise of five selected dusts in the 20-L-sphere. This setup was designed to allow the determination of safety characteristics of nano powders under most critical circumstances (e.g. minimisation of the influence of oxidation before the test itself). The aim of this modification was to determine, whether or not the current setup and procedures underestimate the explosion violence and ignitability of nano powders. For this purpose, two different methods, the so called inerting method and the modified method (using a special nozzle called mushroom nozzle) are used. Both methods are described in the paper. The work includes experimental results of micrometer dusts to validate the modified method. Moreover first results of nanometer iron and aluminium dusts are presented, which were kept at inert conditions until shortly before the ignition. The tested nano iron was found to react pyrophoric, as soon as it gets in contact with air, while the tested nano aluminium did not generally show such behaviour. Tests with nano aluminium using the inerting method revealed a higher pressure rise in comparison to the standard test procedure. This could suggest a different extent of passivation. To investigate this effect more closely, further testes with more nano powders are required. T1 - Comparison of the operating life of tank containers, tank vehicles and rail cars for the carriage of dangerous goods in practice, analysis of causes of damage N2 - More than 400 Mt of dangerous materials are transported in Germany every year, of which 150 Mt are by road. Tank containers, tank vehicles and rail tank cars are used for the carriage of dangerous goods in large quantities. Data on the operating life of tanks are only available, in practice, to a minor degree. They are only partly published, mainly after accidents. The BAM-List - Requirements for Tanks for the Carriage of Dangerous Goods, which has compatibility evaluations of metallic and polymeric materials, has been the basis for substance-related prototype approvals for tank containers and portable tanks designed for the carriage of dangerous goods by the BAM since publication of the first edition in 1989. These data are also used for the approval of rail tank cars and road tank cars and are used as a source of knowledge not only in Germany but also worldwide. Tank leakages caused by tanks or rail tank cars being made of tank and sealing materials which are not resistant to the fill goods are avoided by using the material resistance data of the BAM. Corrosion damage is among the main causes of damage. Uniform and non-uniform area corrosion without mechanical stress in aqueous substances is one of the most frequent types of corrosion during the transport of chemicals in tanks. Much damage by pitting corrosion occurs during the transport of substances containing chlorides or substances which separate chloride ions in the presence of moisture. Operational stresses are caused by the effects of both the road and the dangerous goods being transported. Mechanical damage often results from long-term overstressing and occurs after longer operating times. Operational failures cause damage which may appear during the service of tank containers, road tank cars or rail tank cars. The damage results from the inattention of employees when opening and closing the valves. Traffic accidents also cause damage to tanks and frames. Many cases of damage are due to weld area cracks resulting from four basic errors in construction, material, manufacturing and operation. Manufacturing errors can be undetected and the starting point of cracks which only grow under service conditions. Manufacturing errors result from variations in measurement and design, fittings, state of surface (hardness, abrasiveness) and mechanical surface damage (scratches, cracks). Incorrectly welded joints and errors during mechanical deformation are typical mistakes when installing the component parts. Variations in the wall thickness or combinations of different materials lead to manufacturing errors too. A lot of tanks are not used for the transport of dangerous goods before the end of their service life as they do not fulfil the revised technical safety requirements in the Dangerous Goods Regulations. Predictions in the BAM-List based on literature data and corrosion test results are reflected in the service (operating) life. Rail tank cars made of carbon steel, for example, which are mainly used for the transport of petroleum products, can achieve a service life of 40 – 50 y. Rail tank cars produced of austenitic CrNi- or CrNiMo-steel can reach an operating life of at least 30 y, whereby the corrosiveness of the transport substances plays an important role. The combination of cyclic load and corrosive aqueous environment leads to corrosion fatigue of pipes and components (e.g. pumps) and thus inevitably to the reduction of the lifetime of these components. To estimate the reliability of components from adjusted in-situ-laboratory experiments a corrosion chamber was designed and tested with CO2 saturated corrosive aqueous media flowing at a steady rate. Unique feature of this special chamber is its installation directly onto the sample and thus providing flexible usability in almost every testing machine. This allows simultaneous mechanical loading of the sample, operation at temperatures up to 100 °C and exposure to fluid flow of corrosive liquids and gases. The lifetime reduction of AISI 420C (X46Cr13, 1.4034) is demonstrated at T=60 °C, geothermal brine: Stuttgart Aquifer flow rate: 9 l/h, CO2. S-N plots, micrographic-, phase-, fractographic- and surface analysis were applied to obtain sustainable information on the corrosion fatigue behavior. Maximum number of cycles (here 12.5 x 106 cycles to failure) is reached at σa =173 MPa. No typical fatigue strength exists and passive corrosion fatigue may be identified as failure cause. Low-active radioactive materials are transported in such packages e.g. in the medical and pharmaceutical industry and in the nuclear industry as well. Decommissioning of NPP’s leads to a strong demand for packages to transport low and middle active radioactive waste. According to IAEA regulations the “non-competent authority approved package types” are the Excepted Packages and the Industrial Packages of Type IP-1, IP-2 and IP-3 and packages of Type A. For these types of packages an assessment by the competent authority is required for the quality assurance measures for the design, manufacture, testing, documentation, use, maintenance and inspection (IAEA SSR 6, § 306). In general a compliance audit of the manufacturer of the packaging is required during this assessment procedure. Their regulatory level in the IAEA regulations is not comparable with the “regulatory density” for packages requiring competent authority package design approval. Practices in different countries lead to different approaches within the assessment of the quality assurance measures in the management system as well as in the quality assurance program of a special package design. To use the package or packaging in a safe manner and in compliance with the regulations a management system for each phase of the life of the package or packaging is necessary. The relevant IAEA-SSR6 § 801 requires documentary verification by the consignor concerning package compliance with the requirements. T1 - Mass burning rate of a large TBPB pool fire - experimental study and modeling N2 - Data and prediction for the mass burning rate of a tert-butyl-peroxy-benzoat (TBPB) pool fire (pool diameter = 3 m) is presented. The mass burning rates of TBPB fires are up to six times higher and less dependent on pool diameter compared to hydrocarbon pool fires caused by an additional heat release rate due to exothermic decomposition reaction in the liquid phase. This heat release rate is calculated using a 1st order reaction kinetic obtained from micro calorimetric measurements. A new model is derived considering the heat release rate due to the decomposition reaction which is shown to be 100 % of the heat release rate radiated to the pool surface. With the presented model, including also physical quantities, especially the limiting fuel concentration for upward flame propagation, it is possible to predict the mass burning rates of large TBPB pool fires. The predicted values are in very good agreement with the experiments. T1 - Progress on the research into the influence of dustiness on dust explosions N2 - In practice, occurring explosive dust/air mixtures are usually not homogeneous and in many cases do not spread over the whole enclosure. For the safety measure explosion venting, a smaller venting area might be sufficient as calculated according to venting standards (EN 14491 'Dust Explosion Venting Protective Systems'). The tendency of bulk materials to form dust clouds is not taken into account so far. To optimize the design of explosion protection measures, a new safety characteristic the so-called 'dustiness' (see VDI 2263 part 9 'Determination of Dustiness of Bulk Materials'.) could be useful. Dustiness means the tendency of dust to form dust clouds. There are six dustiness groups (DG) from one to six (one means little tendency to stay airborne, six the opposite). The paper describes first results on the reasons for different dustiness and on dust explosion venting for several dusts of different dustiness. A 75 L vertical tube apparatus for vented dust explosion experiments was created. Pressure, pressure rises and flame speeds were measured to evaluate the course of the dust explosions. In addition the paper includes CFD simulations (ANSYS CFX) about the possibilities to model the dust/air mixtures with the Euler/Lagrange approach. In order to simulate the settling of dust clouds more realistic the particle surface area was adjusted and the particle size distribution was taken into account. Results were compared to experimentally determined terminal velocities. A basic design criterion is the ability to withstand a horizontal drop without impact Binders onto a foundation representative for the real ground of a storage facility. The increasing use of more cost-effective material compositions requires optimized cask geometries to reduce stresses and strains in the cask structure. For example, a non-uniform wall thickness was introduced to reduce maximum wall bending stresses. As a result, the load characteristics changed from line load to point load at bottom and lid side under horizontal drop fest conditions. Hereby, the position of highest stress inside the structure has shifted significantly. This was the reason for a systematic investigation of effects caused by small design changes or small variations of fest conditions. It led to a better understanding of the positions of high local stresses, their time history and maximum value for cylindrical casks under horizontal drop test conditions. Hence, the paper presents the lessons learnt from modeling and simulating such scenarios considering an impact without limiters onto a realistic target. N2 - In March 2004 with the position paper “Maintaining and improving competence in safety engineering” of the DECHEMA/GVC Research Committee "Safety Engineering in Chemical Plants", an initiative came up against the tendency that more and more process and plant safety (PPS) orientated professorships turn to other more fashionable research topics. The Research Committee was concerned that PPS in both academic teaching and research could suffer a negative development - despite of its importance. In 2009 a corresponding Dutch initiative followed. To bring these both and other similar initiatives together, within the 8th European Congress of Chemical Engineering held in Berlin in September 2011 a two days Special session on PPS competence was jointly organized by EFCE, ProcessNet and EPSC. All presentations and conclusions drawn by the organizers (the authors of this paper) are electronically available. The paper addresses the before mentioned initiatives, highlights views and results from the ECCE 8’s special session on PPS competence, and indicates steps necessary to be taken and recent developments. Die Bestimmung der Spurenfeuchte erfolgt mit neuentwickelten planaren Sensoren (HUMItrace-Sensoren) nach dem coulometrischen Messprinzip im Frostpunkttemperaturbereich von -80 °C bis -30 °C mit der Kalibriereinrichtung THG11 durch Mischen von trockenen und befeuchteten Teilgasströmen kalibriert. Die Gasfeuchte von Luft kann in diesem Bereich mit den HUMItrace-Sensoren mit einer erweiterten Unsicherheit von 2 K bestimmt werden. Die Sensoren können aber auch zur Gasfeuchtemessung in Wasserstoff, Stickstoff und Distickstoffmonoxid eingesetzt werden. Das hier vorgestellte Projekt beinhaltet die Entwicklung eines Verfahrens der zerstörungsfreien Prüfung über weite Entfernungen (bis zu 100 m), das zum Einsatz in automatisierten Messsystemen bzw. zur Integration in Langzeitüberwachungssysteme geeignet ist. Grundlage des Verfahrens ist die gezielte Anregung und Auswertung von Lamb-Wellenmoden, wodurch eine effektive Unterscheidung von Fehler- und Formanzeigen sowie eine Klassifizierung unterschiedlicher Fehlertypen möglich werden. Der Vorteil der Nutzung geführter Wellen für die zerstörungsfreie Prüfung liegt in ihrer vergleichsweise guten Ausbreitungsfähigkeit über weite Entfernungen. Die sich daraus ergebenden Möglichkeiten der Untersuchung großer bzw. schwer zugänglicher Bereiche einer Struktur bieten innovative Ansätze für die Entwicklung robuster Structural-Health-Monitoring-Systeme (SHM). Erst durch die Verfügbarkeit leistungsfähiger Rechentechnik wird ein breiter Einsatz derartiger Verfahren möglich. Die Technik kann zur Materialcharakterisierung an ebenen bzw. zylindrischen, dünnwandigen Flächen aus Metall oder auch CFK genutzt werden. Adressierte Anwendungsfelder sind z.B. die Untersuchung von Flugzeugtragflächen oder Pipelines. Des Weiteren wird der Einsatz solcher Verfahren zur Überwachung sicherheitsrelevanter Bauteile z.B. aus Laminaten angestrebt, wie sie verstärkt in der Luft- und Raumfahrt Anwendung finden. Im Rahmen des Projekts wurde auf Grundlage vorhandener Technik (Wellenanregung mittels Ultraschall-Gruppenstrahlprüfköpfen) ein umfassendes Verständnis für die Technologie und anwendungsrelevante Parameter (Probenmaterial und -dimensionen, Welleneigenschaften, Anregungs-, Transmissions-, Reflektionscharakteristika) gewonnen und Algorithmen zur Erkennung von Schädigungsbildern (z.B. Riss, Loch, Verdünnung) entwickelt. Neben der Algorithmusentwicklung zur Detektion und Analyse von Schadstellen, lag ein Projektschwerpunkt in der Entwicklung einer geeigneten Gerätetechnik. Als sensorisches Elemente wurde Ultraschall-Gruppenstrahlertechnik eingesetzt. Besondere Anforderungen werden an die Technik zur Anregung der Wellenmoden unter Verwendung geeigneter Piezoaktoren gestellt. In diesem Bereich existiert bislang keine kommerziell erhältliche Gerätelösung, weshalb eine Neuentwicklug der Anregetechnik realisiert wurde. Speziell für die hohe Anzahl an Aktorkanälen, die benötigt wird, um unterschiedliche Moden und Wellenformen anzuregen, wurde eine äußerst leistungsfähige Anregeeinheit entwickelt. T2 - 16. Therefore, precise measurements are of growing importance to ensure their quality. This contribution describes the measurement of gears of a micro planetary gear set with a tactile probe, a tactile-optical probe, an optical sensor, and computed tomography (CT). For the tactile measurements, a high precision piezoresistive microprobe was used. A so-called fiber probe was applied for tactile-optical measurements. This probe applies image processing to determine the position of the tactile probing element. For all tactile and tactile-optical measurements, single point probing was used. The optical measurements were carried out with an imaging sensor based on focus variation. Due to limited accessibility, on some gears not all regions could be measured by the optical sensor and the tactile-optical probe. In contrast to this, with CT the whole part could be measured with high point density. We used a micro-CT system and carried out measurements with Synchrotron-CT. All the sensors used deliver measurement data in Cartesian coordinates. It is a challenge to transfer these data into coordinates in which gear parameters are defined. For this, special attention must be paid to the determination of the gear axis and to the orientation of the teeth. The applied procedures are detailed for different micro gears. The comparison between data of different measurements was carried out successfully. The deviations between the CT data and the tactile or tactile-optical data lie in the range of only a few micrometers.
