The contact angle of a water drop in a compressed CO2 atmosphere is analyzed on an X70 pipeline carbon steel and compared to that on a martensitic steel S41500 to elucidate the effect of corrosion process on active wetting behaviour. The measurements are performed with liquid CO2 at 278 K and pressures ranging from 5 to 20 MPa. The results show that the contact angle (CA) increases with pressure from 132 ° to 143 ° for S41500 and from 117 ° to 137 ° for X70 and decreases with drop age by 20 ° to 24 ° regardless of the pressure and of the fact that corrosion only occurs on X70, which is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, element mapping and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS) analysis. At higher pressure, the contact angles on both materials converge. Further, related properties like density and interfacial tension were determined. CO2 - saturated water has a higher density than pure water: At 5 MPa saturated water reaches a density of 1017 kg⋅m^(-3) and at 20 MPa 1026 kg⋅m^(-3) compared to pure water with a density of 1002 kg⋅m^(-3) and 1009 kg⋅m^(-3), respectively. In this pressure range the IFT drops from 33 mN⋅m^(-1)at 5 MPa to 23 mN⋅m^(-1) at 20 MPa. Using the equimolar CrCoNi alloy, we observe significant metal dissolution in a corrosive electrolyte (0.1 M NaCl, pH 2) concurrently with the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the transpassive region despite the absence of hysteresis in polarization curves or other obvious corrosion indicators. We present a characterization scheme to delineate the contribution of OER and alloy dissolution, using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) for OER-onset detection, and quantitative chemical analysis with inductively coupled-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and ultraviolet visible light (UV-Vis) spectroscopy to elucidate metal dissolution processes. In-situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM) revealed that the transpassive metal dissolution on CrCoNi is dominated by intergranular corrosion. These results have significant implications for the stability of MPEAs in corrosion systems, emphasizing the necessity of analytically determining metal ions released from MPEA electrodes into the electrolyte when evaluating Faradaic efficiencies of OER catalysts. The release of transition metal ions not only reduces the Faradaic efficiency of electrolyzers but may also cause poisoning and degradation of membranes in electrochemical reactors. N2 - Multi-Hauptelement-Legierungen (MPEAs) gewinnen in der Korrosions- und Elektrokatalyseforschung aufgrund ihrer elektrochemischen Stabilität über einen breiten pH-Bereich und der Vielfalt der möglichen chemischen Zusammensetzungen zunehmend an Interesse. In unseren Untersuchungen mit der äquimolaren CrCoNi-Legierung in einem sauren Elektrolyten (0.1 M NaCl, pH 2) beobachteten wir eine signifikante Metallauflösung, die mit der Sauerstoffentwicklungsreaktion (OER) im transpassiven Bereich einhergeht, obwohl in zyklischen Polarisationskurven keine Hysterese auftrat oder andere offensichtliche Korrosionsindikatoren vorlagen. In diesem Artikel wird ein Charakterisierungskonzept eingeführt, dass die Beiträge der OER und der Legierungsauflösung differenziert. Hierfür kommt die elektrochemische Rastermikroskopie (SECM) zum Nachweis des Beginns der OER und die quantitative chemische Analyse mit induktiv gekoppelter Massenspektrometrie (ICP-MS) und UV/Vis-Spektrometrie zur Aufklärung der Metallauflösungsprozesse zum Einsatz. All experiments were performed in the laboratory using autoclaves at 150 ◦C and 1 MPa in deaerated condition for 1 and 7 days. Results showed that the pH of geothermal waters is the most detrimental factor in the transformation of ɣ-Al2O3 and its protective abilities. Delaminations were found in the Coating exposed to geothermal brines with pH 4. FTIR spectra indicated a transformation of ɣ-Al2O3 to boehmite AlOOH after exposure to pH 4 and 6, and bayerite Al(OH)3 was formed after exposure to pH 8. Different Crystal structures of the hydrated Al2O3 also contribute to the stability of the coatings, observed by the SEM- EDX of the surface and cross-section of coatings. As the basis for an optimization of CO2 purity over the whole CCS chain, impacts of different impurities were investigated at key steps including studies on (i) corrosion of metallic materials in CO2 streams and brine, (ii) fluid and interfacial properties as a function of pressure, temperature and CO2 stream composition and their implications for CO2 transport, injection and geological storage, (iii) costs of different pipeline design options, (iv) geochemical alterations at typical reservoir conditions and their implications for geomechanical rock properties. Major findings are synthesized for two exemplary single source-single sink CCS chain scenarios involving CO2 stream compositions typical for pre-combustion capture and oxyfuel combustion. Recommendations for material selection for compression, transport and injection were derived for various CO2 stream compositions. To reliably control corrosion, a limitation of water contents to 50 ppmv is recommended for pipeline transportation of all CO2 streams. At geological storage conditions, the presence of either O2, NOx or SO2 only weakly affected fluid-mineral/rock interactions that still impacted geomechanical rock properties. Peel tests under humid conditions indicated an increased interaction between the acidic pre-treated surface and the adhesive. The main goal of the present study was to evaluate the corrosion behavior of three different steel grades (low alloy steel UNS G41300, stainless steel UNS S31603 and high-alloyed stainless steel UNS N08031) by means of exposure and electrochemical tests in static conditions at 100 °C (100 kPa) and 175 °C (800 kPa). The research was carried out in a synthetic geothermal fluid (1,500 mg/L chlorides, 20 mg/L sulphates, pH 4), simulating the conditions present at the geothermal field Sibayak, North Sumatra (Indonesia). Different test setups were performed in order to investigate the most common corrosion types present in geothermal systems; uniform, pitting and crevice corrosion. According to the obtained results at 100 °C, stainless steel could represent an option to be used in the designed geothermal application due to its excellent performance in terms of corrosion resistance, compared to alloy UNS G41300, and lower cost, compared to alloy UNS N08031. However, for 175 °C, a higher alloyed material should be evaluated or appropriate material protection methods should be considered, since none of the investigated materials provided absolutely satisfying results. Corrosion behavior of Al-SiO2 composites before and after exposure in 1M NaCl solution was examined using potentiodynamic polarization (Tafel curve analysis). The study was also equipped with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations. Before exposure, Al-SiO2(T) exhibited the best corrosion resistance. Performance improvement was indicated by Al-SiO2(B) up to 10 times better than Al-SiO2(T) after exposure. The increased SiO2 content did not significantly enhance the corrosion resistance of the composites. The Al-SiO2 composites with 5% SiO2 content showed very high corrosion resistance (as the optimum composition). Furthermore, pitting corrosion was observed in the Al-SiO2 composites, indicated by the formation of corrosion products at grain boundaries. The product was affected by the presence of SiO2 in the Al matrix and the NaCl environment at 90 °C (approach to synthetic geothermal media: Na+, Cl, H+, OH-). Our study revealed the presence of γ-Al2O3, γ-Al(OH)3, and Al(OH)2Cl as the dominant corrosion products. T1 - Influence of the BF3·O(C2H5)2 on the corrosion resistance of hybrid silica sol-gel coatings deposited on flash-PEO-treated Mg alloy N2 - Achieving highly cross-linked sol-gel coatings to provide effective corrosion protection of Mg alloys remains a challenging task. The aim of this work is to evaluate the effect boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BF3·O(C2H5)2) as catalyst to epoxy group in a GPTMS/TEOS/SiO2 sol and assesses its effect on the structure and corrosion resistance properties of Flash-PEO coated pre-treated Mg alloy. 29Si MAS NMR and 13C CPMAS-NMR demonstrated that (BF3·O(C2H5)2) efficiently promotes the epoxy polymerization of the GPTMS and the formation of a hybrid silica network. However, the amount of (BF3·O(C2H5)2) should be optimized to minimize the formation of undesirable byproducts such as ethyl ether terminal units. Therefore, GPTMS/TEOS/SiO2 sols containing different amounts of (BF3·O(C2H5)2) were synthesized and deposited onto the Flash-PEO coated Mg alloy, leading to bilayer systems with a total thickness of ⁓8 μm. The corrosion behavior of the bilayer coatings in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Scanning Kelvin probe microscope (SKPFM). The results revealed that the barrier properties of the coatings with enhanced cross-linked structure showed impedance modulus (│Z│f:0.1 Hz) approximately four orders of magnitude higher than the bare magnesium alloy and two orders of magnitude higher than the F-PEO coated sample. A suitable compromise between (BF3·O(C2H5)2) amount and sol-gel film structure is required to obtain a more durable barrier coating capable to extend the protective lifespan of the magnesium alloy. By using SECM‐based tip substrate voltammetry (TSV) in combination with the chemical analysis of the electrolyte, we were able to differentiate between anodic metal dissolution and oxygen evolution in the transpassive range. Our investigations have shown that CrCoNi has a significantly higher corrosion resistance compared to CrMnFeCoNi. In the studied alkaline environment, a transpassive oxide film is formed on the surface of CrCoNi during secondary passivation. This transpassive oxide film appears to play a significant role in oxygen evolution, as the increase in TSV currents at the microelectrode coincides with the corresponding current density plateau of the voltametric current trace. The formation of the transpassive oxide film was not observed in previous studies conducted in acidic environments. Moreover, the alkaline electrolyte induced a positive hysteresis and mild pitting corrosion, in addition to intergranular corrosion, which was the sole corrosion process observed at acidic pH levels. These findings enhance the understanding of the processes governing the transpassivity of CrMnFeCoNi and CrCoNi MPEAs in alkaline environments and have potential implications for the development of application‐tailored corrosion‐resistant MPEAs. The book provides eight of nine chapters in which the author discusses technical aspects of assessment and repair of steel‐reinforced concrete structures. To sum up, this book is recommended for students and people involved with the assessment and repair of reinforced‐concrete structures, who want to get a quick introduction into the different aspects of the field. Readers also learn much about the economic interactions besides the topic. However, for experienced technicians and corrosion experts, this book may not be exact enough in both the electrochemical description of deterioration processes and the practical aspects of repair and control methods. In the recent literature, some indications are presented that repassivation occurs after a certain time of polarisation. Therefore, the investigations discussed in this paper aim to clarify, to what extent the re-passivation of carbon steel due to cathodic polarisation occurs, and if the ennoblement of OCP is a sufficient indication for repassivation. In a first step, the corrosion state of five nominal equal test specimens was determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). After determining the initial corrosion state by evaluating the charge transfer resistance and the polarisation resistance, respectively, the specimens were polarised cathodically. Impedance data were recorded before, during and after polarisation. The impedance data were evaluated by equivalent circuit fitting with special attention to charge transfer resistances and the impact of diffusion on the corrosion and polarisation behaviour. The results indicate that the reduction of oxides and oxygen diffusion during cathodic polarisation has strong impact on the systems behaviour and that repassivation effects occur after switching off the polarisation current and during depolarisation, respectively. For indoor applications it is possible to produce decorated glass by using enamel colours and glass painting techniques without any problems. However, this is more limited for applications out of doors. Humidity and environmental pollution attack the surface of the coating and can damage it. There are only a few colours on the market which are resistant towards acids and bases until now. Additionally, most of those colours are opaque. To extend the colour palette, chemically resistant low melting coloured glasses are being developed which are transparent and intensively toned even in thin coating thicknesses. To achieve such an ambitious aim, many parameters have to combine and act in a complex manner. New compositions of lead borosilicate, zinc borosilicate and lead-zinc borosilicate glasses were produced and milled as powder. The thermal properties as well as the environmental stability were analysed. The influence of PbO and ZnO on the thermal properties and the environmental stability were investigated. Evaluation of the fusing results shows that the production and mixture of transparent vitreous enamels for the exterior side of glasses is possible. The tests made it clear that the original materials for making the vitreous enamels must be excellently ground and prepared to achieve a satisfactory result. The method to produce durable vitreous enamels for exterior application also seems to allow the production of glass colours. How extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) perform this protective role was investigated by following development of the model microcolonial black fungus Knufia petricola A95 grown as a sub-aerial biofilm. Extracellular substances were extracted with NaOH/formaldehyde and the structures of two excreted polymers studied by methylation as well as NMR analyses. The main polysaccharide (~ 80%) was pullulan, also known as α-1,4-; α-1,6-glucan, with different degrees of polymerisation. Αlpha-(1,4)-linked-Glcp and α-(1,6)-linked-Glcp were present in the molar ratios of 2:1. A branched galactofuromannan with an α-(1,2)-linked Manp main chain and a β-(1,6)-linked Galf side chain formed a minor fraction (~ 20%). To further understand the roles of EPS in the weathering of minerals and rocks, viscosity along with corrosive properties were studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The kinetic viscosity of extracellular K. petricola A95 polysaccharides (≈ 0.97 × 10-6 m2 s-1) ranged from the equivalent of 2% (w/v) to 5% glycerine, and could thus profoundly affect diffusion-dominated processes. The corrosive nature of rock-inhabiting fungal EPS was also demonstrated by its effects on the aluminium coating of the AFM cantilever and the silicon layer below. One of the alternative renewable fuels is biomass but it is a difficult fuel because of its diversity and complexity. It can contain high percentages of K and Cl responsible for corrosion together with sand that have additionally an abrasive effect during combustion. Because of permanently extending the surface reaction due to abrasion the corrosion of the materials increases. In particular in power plants, the superheater tubes are exposed to a corrosive abrasive attack that is one of the main sources of concern. The development of new alloys for multilayer surface, which combines corrosive and abrasive resistance is therefore of high importance. Those new technical approaches must be at the same time cost-effective to be an alternative to conventional materials. This paper presents the principle of experimental methods developed for the investigations of high temperature corrosion combined with abrasion in thermochemical processes with high hydrochloric acid concentrations like during biomass combustion. The aim of the presented investigation methods it to test and develop suitable alloys for coatings for the super heater tubes of biomass power plants.
