To extend the lead time for risk treatment in such critical regions, reliable detection of gases within the shallow subsurface is required to observe critical gas accumulations before degassing into the atmosphere. A near real-time monitoring approach is introduced to determine the volumetric expansion of a leakinggas in the subsurface. Considering the pressure relaxation with the ambient air pressure, the approach enables the forecasting of the final size of a pressurized gas body in terms of characteristic lengths. According to theoretical basics, such a characteristic length, which enables us to perform a gas (safety) measurement based on a purely geometrical measure, behaves independently of subsurface properties,i.e., it enables a reliable quantification of the escaping gas irrespective of its heterogeneous or changingflow path distribution. A field test for a 10 l/min pinhole leakage injected into a 10 m long, 0.4 m wide, 0.95 m deep soil-filled trench that was equipped with linear sensors shows the lateral-vertical volumetric gas expansion along these sensors, and demonstrates the applicability of the characteristic length approach. They are often based on modern measurement and data communication technologies for which standards (or at least guidelines) do not exist yet. A lack in standardization, however, makes the establishment of new sensing and application technologies - and thus up-to-date SHM systems - substantially difficult. Successful commercialization and wide acceptance of SHM systems needs widely accepted standards and guidelines. Standards help to design SHM systems in an optimal way. Currently, standardization gets increasing attention in civil engineering field; there are some activities e.g. in ISHMII, IEC and ISO groups to develop standards for the most important components of SHM systems. The paper gives an overview on current activities in standardization to propose sound and safe procedures for assessment of the existing structure's behavior and for estimation of its residual life. Special attention is paid in this paper to newly developed standards for fiber-optic measurement systems; important aspects of such sensor systems are mentioned. The contribution is aimed at owners of structures that have to be assessed as well as at developers of sensors and monitoring systems who have to select appropriate effective sensing technologies. Using standards, both parties find recommendations how to proceed in development SHM systems to estimate the design or residual life, and how to find out the optimal maintenance strategy. A large number of SHM methods is based on ultrasonic waves, whose properties change depending on structural health. However, the wide application of SHM systems is limited due to the lack of suitable methods to assess their reliability. The evaluation of the system performance usually refers to the determination of the Probability of Detection (POD) of a test procedure. Up to now, only few limited methods exist to evaluate the POD of SHM systems, which prevent them from being standardised and widely accepted in industry. The biggest hurdle concerning the POD calculation is the large amount of samples needed. A POD analysis requires data from numerous identical structures with integrated SHM systems. Each structure is then damaged at different locations and with various degrees of severity. All of this is connected to high costs. Therefore, one possible way to tackle this problem is to perform computer-aided investigations. In this work, the POD assessment procedure established in NDT according to the Berens model is adapted to guided wave-based SHM systems. The approach implemented here is based on solely computer-aided investigations. After efficient modelling of wave propagation phenomena across an automotive component made of a carbon fibre-reinforced composite, the POD curves are extracted. Finally, the novel concept of a POD map is introduced to look into the effect of damage position on system reliability. In structural reliability, an estimate of the cumulative failure probability is obtained based on probabilistic Engineering models of the deterioration processes and structural performance. Information on the condition and the loading contained in inspection and monitoring data can be included in the probability estimate through Bayesian updating. Conditioning the probability of failure on the inspection or monitoring outcomes available at time t (e.g. detections or no detection of damages) can lead to a reduction in that probability. Such a drop in the cumulative failure probability might seem counterintuitive since the cumulative failure probability is a non-decreasing function of time. In this paper, we illustrate—with the help of a numerical example—that such a drop is possible because the cumulative probability before and after the updating is not based on the same information, hence not on the same probabilistic model. This analysis can be approached by approximation through a series of time-invariant reliability problems, which is a potentially effective strategy for cases where direct solutions of the time-variant reliability problem are challenging, e.g. for structural systems with many elements or arbitrary load processes. In this contribution, we thoroughly Review the formulation of the equivalent time-invariant reliability problems and extend this approximation to structures for which inspection and monitoring data is available. Thereafter, we present methods for efficiently evaluating the reliability over time. In particular, we propose the combination of sampling-based methods with a FORM (first-order reliability method) approximation of the series system reliability problem that arises in the computation of the lifetime reliability. Measurements which compare the damaged and the repaired status of the same track section at different times, or which compare a damaged and an intact track section at the same time, have been successfully performed at some sites in Germany. The loss of contact between the sleeper and the track plate, between the track plate and the base plate, and between the base plate and the base layer have been analysed. The soil properties of each site have been measured and have been used to establish realistic track-soil models. Theoretical results of the wavenumber domain and the finite-element boundary element method have been compared with the experimental results. The observed experimental and theoretical results, changes in the time histories of displacements and velocities due to train passages and in the transfer functions (receptances) due to hammer impacts, are encouraging that these measurements can be used to detect track damage. This paper argues that they should not only be understood as digital representations of physical structures but as a digital methodology that enhances the operation and maintenance of bridges through the integration of data collection, maintenance actions, data management, structural assessment, and decision support. In this context, it is emphasized that the transition from reactive to predictive maintenance using digital twins can only be achieved if, in addition to the necessary diagnostic and prognostic condition analyses, methods for optimizing decisions on data collection and maintenance actions are also implemented. To illustrate this discussion, two key components of a digital twin for the operation and maintenance management of traffic bridges are demonstrated using a railway bridge as an example. First, it is shown how monitoring data can be systematically managed and made available for subsequent analyses through a data management system. Gleichzeitig erfordert die Anwendung der SEA tiefgehende spezialisierte Fachkenntnisse. Mit der zunehmenden Verbreitung und dem steigenden Interesse an dieser Methode ist auch der Bedarf an standardisierten Prozessen und Qualitätskontrollen gewachsen. N2 - Stress corrosion cracking confronts bridge operators with immense challenges, as it can lead to severe damage to the tendons while the methods for early damage detection and load-bearing capacity control are highly limited. In this context, Acoustic Emission Analysis (AEA) has established itself as an important method for detecting wire breaks. This technology offers unique advantages and can make a vital contribution to ensuring the continued operation of endangered structures. However, the application of AEA requires deep specialized expertise. With the increasing adoption and growing interest in this method, the need for standardized processes and quality controls has also grown. The DGZfP’s Acoustic Emission Testing Committee recognized this need and developed Guideline SE 05. T1 - An ultrasound monitoring system for concrete structures N2 - The research project "Ultrasonic Net for Concrete Monitoring (UNeCOM)" aims at developing a methodology for an embedded ultrasonic network for the condition assessment of infrastructure constructions. Civil engineering structures made of concrete, which are located in tectonically active regions or undergo special loading conditions, may require continuous monitoring. It is important to assess the condition of the building and its stability to recognise and classify the effect of a seismic event or evolving damage at early stages before failure occurs. Embedded ultrasonic sensors offer the possibility to detect changes in the material and degradation mechanisms from inside the structure in areas which are difficult or impossible to inspect otherwise. In contrast to conventional ultrasonic testing methods, where the concrete surfaces are scanned with ultrasound probes, this new approach uses sensors, which are embedded into concrete, eliminating the effect of variable coupling conditions between sensors and concrete. This method allows an integral detection of changes in the concrete structure, for example due to seismic activities, to detect mechanical impacts, as well as degradation of the material due to overloading. Such methods have great relevance especially for the monitoring of constructions like power plants, bridges, offshore structures and other structures with high technical safety requirements. The sensor network can be controlled remotely through the internet which is also being used for data transfer. The embedded sensor network is designed to monitor structural damage and concrete degradation globally with high sensitivity. The Identification and diagnosis of concrete components is a major task in the maintenance of critical infrastructure, for instance concrete bridges with heavy traffic volume. A feasibility study investigates the application of RFID sensor systems for this task. The second example reviews the transportation of dangerous goods. Using modern technologies enables promising possibilities to reduce accidents and to avoid non-conformity with transportation regulations. New sensor technologies such as fiber-optic sensors are often used; however, standards (or at least guidelines) are not yet available or internationally approved. This lack in standardization makes the acceptance of FOS technologies in complex SHM systems substantially difficult. A standard family for different FOS technologies is therefore being developed that should help to design SHM systems in an optimal way. International standardization activities take place in several standardization bodies such as IEC and ASTM, and within SHM societies such as ISHMII. The paper reports on activities in standardization of fiber-optic sensors, on results already achieved, and on newly started projects. Combined activities of fiber sensor experts and SHM experts from Civil Engineering are presented. These contributions should help owners of structures as well as developers of sensors and monitoring systems to select effective and validated sensing technologies. T1 - Online-detection of slipping soil areas by embedded fiber-optic sensing rods N2 - Movements in geological areas are often caused by shear zones deep in the underground or by hardly observable slipping zones. Detection of movements reaching critical values is of crucial importance to avoid losses and harms. Optical sensor fibers with gauge lengths of several meters or even distributed fiber-optic sensors with gauge lengths of hundreds of meters allow detecting deformation of such zones with quite good resolution. The paper presents a new technology of detecting deformations and movements in soil or rock massifs. The core part of the sensing system is a tiny pultruded rod with an outer diameter of 3 mm to 6 mm. It contains two fiber-optic sensor systems. One sensor system is used for permanent online measurement and provides integral strain information along the whole length of the rod; in case of critical deformations, it provides a warning signal. The second sensing system uses fiber-optic Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors located close to the expected shear zone. This measurement system will be activated after the warning signal has been initiated by the integral strain measurement system. The FBG strain sensor system records then resulting deformations in detail. The sensing rod containing both sensor systems can be installed in a borehole to detect beginning soil movements automatically. The electronic equipment is powered by a solar panel; the amount of deformation in soil or rock formations can be estimated from the strain change measured in the sensor fibers. The effectiveness of this warning system will be shown using the example of a critically sliding slope in an open brown coal pit in Germany. In the case of a dangerous goods accident, the available information about the type, amount and condition of the dangerous goods can be used to accurately inform the relief forces. Unavailable or inaccurate information represents a significant problem for the relief forces. This often leads to a delay in the rescue operation, because relief forces must be aware of the substances involved to protect themselves effectively against them. T1 - Zum Ansatz eines kritischen Chloridgehaltes bei Stahlbetonbauwerken N2 - Der Chloridgehalt, ab dem bei der Bewehrung im Beton mit Korrosion gerechnet werden muss, wird als kritischer Chloridgehalt bezeichnet. Die Höhe dieses kritischen Chloridgehaltes bestimmt in hohem Maße den Instandsetzungsumfang und damit die Instandsetzungskosten. Zahlreiche Labor- und Bauwerksuntersuchungen belegen, dass dieser kritische Chloridgehalt von einer Vielzahl von Parametern abhängt und deswegen kein fester Wert sein kann. Aus diesem Grund ist es sinnvoll, über Betrachtung von Korrosions- bzw. Depassivierungswahrscheinlichkeiten einen unteren kritischen Chloridgehalt zu bestimmen, bei dem bei gegebenen Randbedingungen nur mit einer geringen Wahrscheinlichkeit (z. B. 5%-Fraktilwert) Korrosion von Stahl in Beton zu erwarten ist. Die Auswertung von zahlreichen Untersuchungen zeigt, dass der Ansatz eines kritischen Chloridgehaltes von 0, 5 M.-% bezogen auf den Zementgehalt bei Einhaltung bestimmter Randbedingungen mit einer hinreichend geringen Korrosionswahrscheinlichkeit korreliert und somit auch in Übereinstimmung mit der Richtlinie 'Schutz und Instandsetzung von Betonbauteilen' des DAfStb als unterer kritischer Chloridgehalt unter Praxisbedingungen anzusetzen ist. Fiber-optic sensors have been established as a new and innovative measurement technology in very different fields, such as material science, civil engineering, light-weight structures, geotechnical areas as well as chemical and high-voltage substations. Very often, mechanical quantities such as deformation, strain or vibration are requested. However, measurement of chemical quantities in materials and structure components, such as pH value in steel reinforced concrete members also provides information about the integrity of concrete structures. A special fiber-optic chemical sensor for monitoring the alkaline state (pH value) of the cementitious matrix in steel-reinforced concrete structures with the purpose of early detection of corrosion-initiating factors is described. The paper presents the use of several fiber-optic sensor technologies in engineering. One example concerns the use of highly resolving concrete-embeddable fiber Fabry-Perot acoustic emission (AE) sensors for the assessment of the bearing behaviour of large concrete piles in existing foundations or during and after its installation. Another example concerns fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors attached to anchor steels (micro piles) to measure the strain distribution in loaded soil anchors. Polymer optical fibers (POF) can be — because of their high elasticity and high ultimate strain – well integrated into textiles to monitor their Deformation behaviour. Monitoring the webbing clothes moth Tineola bisselliella at thirteen outdoor stations in the broader area of Berlin give a first idea of their occurrence in an urban area and the hinterlands. The results demonstrate a seasonal abundance in the city and a missing of this species in the countryside. Data suggest a synanthropic occurrence of the webbing clothes moth rather than an invasion from natural reservoires. Possible molecular examinations on the species and subspecies level are presented to analyze the gene flow between populations and give an impression of species mobility as well as pathways of infestation. For reliable information on the actual horizontal distribution of the wind flow, 13 positions along two spans of an overhead electrical line of about 400 m length each are selected for wind measurements. Simultaneously, the structural response is measured at the towers. Preliminary analyses aim at the system identification of long span transmission lines exposed to gusty wind by derivation of a so called joint acceptance function which describes the admittance from wind velocity to the system's response. Zur Früh­erkennung und zur Populationsdichteüberwachung von Schädlingen nehmen Pheromonfallen eine zentrale Position im Konzept der ökonomischen Schadensschwelle und damit im integrierten Vorrats- und Materialschutz ein. Dies gilt vor allem für Sexuallockstoff-Fallen gegen paarungsbereite Männchen von vorratsschädlichen Motten aus den Gruppen der Zünsler (Pyralidae) mit Dörrobst-, Mehl- und Speichermotte und gegen Kleinschmetterlinge(Tineiden) mit Kleider- und Pelzmotte sowie gegeneinige Nagekäfer mit Brot-, Tabak- und Gemeiner Nagekäfer. Durch das sogenannte "Monitoring" können Bekämpfungsstrategien zunächst zeitlich und räumlich optimiert und anschließend auf Erfolg bewertet werden. Neben Sexualpheromonen sind bei einigen Käfern wie beispielsweise den Korn- und Reismehlkäfern auch Aggregationspheromone, die attraktiv auf beide Geschlechter wirken, verbreitet. Ihr Einsatz zur Bekämpfung, d.h. zum Massenfang von Individuen, wie dies im forstwirtschaftlichen Bereich gegen Borkenkäfer nutzbringend durch­geführt wird, hat sich aufgrund mangelnden Erfolgs im Nachernteschutz jedoch nicht etabliert. Neben einem wirtschaftlich orientierten Einsatz von Pheromonfallen kann deren Anwendung auch wertvolle allgemein biologische Informationen über Schadinsekten liefern. Wird das "Monitoring" z.B. im Freiland abseits von Lagerstätten für faunistische Erhebungen durchgeführt, können natürliche Vorkommen von Schädlings­arten ermittelt werden. Dies erlaubt Rückschlüsse auf ihre ursprünglichen Lebensräume und auf mögliche adaptative Szenarien beim Übergang zu einer synanthropen und damit für den Menschen schädlichen Lebens­weise. N2 - The application of pheromone baited traps to control pest insects in stored food or materials of use is well established since the past decades. The main pheromone components of all major stored-product and material pests have been identified. Pest monitoring with pheromone traps is a key factor in integrated pest management to estimate population density build-ups and to define economic threshold levels. Especially male attracting sex pheromones, e.g. for the stored-product pyralids, the clothes moths, and some anobiid beetles, function well in this aspect. Optimal control strategies in space and time are guided by pest population monitoring including efficacy evaluation of the undertaken control measures. Comparatively less successful is the application of aggregation pheromones, which are found in grain and flour beetles and which attract both sexes. Well functioningcontrol of bark beetles through mass-trapping with aggregationpheromones in the forest environment could for various reasons not be implemented for stored-product protection, respectively. Besides an economically driven adoption of pheromone traps, trapping results may also deliver useful information of a pest´s general ecology. The distribution of a pest species outside the synanthropic environment, its occurrence in hidden infestations out-doors can be estimated when monitoring tools are used out-doors, away from any storage facilities. The resulting auteco­logical data can be helpful to detect natural reservoirs of a pest and to possibly reconstruct adaptation scenarios to the men-made environment. T1 - Processing ultrasonic data by coda wave interferometry to monitor load tests of concrete beams N2 - Ultrasonic transmission measurements have been used for decades to monitor concrete elements, mostly on a laboratory scale. Recently, coda wave interferometry (CWI), a technique adapted from seismology, was introduced to civil engineering experiments. It can be used to reveal subtle changes in concrete laboratory samples and even large structural elements without having a transducer directly at the place where the change is taking place. Here, several load tests until failure on large posttensioned concrete beams have been monitored using networks of embedded transducers. To detect subtle effects at the beginning of the experiments and cope with severe changes due to cracking close to failure, the coda wave interferometry procedures had to be modified to an adapted step-wise approach. Using this methodology, we were able to monitor stress distribution and localize large cracks by a relatively simple technique. Implementation of this approach on selected real structures might help to make decisions in infrastructure asset management. A small-scale load test was carried out by a 16 ton truck to study the temperature and load influence on the bridge, as well as the performance of the embedded transducers. Ultrasonic coda wave interferometry technique, which has high sensitivity in detecting subtle changes in a heterogeneous medium, was used for the data evaluation and interpretation. The separation of two main influence factors (load effect and temperature variation) is studied, and future applications of wave velocity variation rate Φ for structural health condition estimation are discussed. As a preliminary research stage, the installation method and the performance of the ultrasonic transducer are recognized. Load- and temperature-induced weak wave velocity variations are successfully detected with a high resolution of 10−4%. The feasibility of the whole system for long-term structural health monitoring is considered, and further research is planned. This can include different chemical and physical treatments, such as thermal treatment for waste reduction, waste conditioning for homogenisation and waste immobilisation for stabilisation prior to packaging and interim storage. Ensuring the durability and safety of the waste matrices and packages through performance and condition assessment is important for waste owners, waste management organisations, regulators and wider stakeholder communities. Technical achievements and lessons learned from the THERAMIN and PREDIS projects focused on low- and intermediate-level waste handling is shared here. The recently completed project on Thermal Treatment for Radioactive Waste Minimization and Hazard Reduction (THERAMIN) made advances in demonstrating the feasibility of different thermal treatment techniques to reduce volume and immobilise different streams of radioactive waste (LILW) prior to disposal. The Pre-Disposal Management of Radioactive Waste (PREDIS) project addresses innovations in the treatment of metallic materials, liquid organic waste and solid organic waste, which can result from nuclear power plant operation, decommissioning and other industrial processes. Over the 4-year duration, this Euratom project of 47 partners from 17 Member States has worked in close collaboration with 25 End User industrial members to advance the technologies associated with predisposal issues. This has included characterisation followed by treatment, conditioning and processing of metallics, liquid organic and solid organic wastes as well as with digitalization technologies for assessing performance of concrete waste packages and pre-disposal storage. Long-term modelling and performance testing have been done to verify the safety and effectiveness of the new or enhanced solutions. Value Assessments were done for some of the new solutions to ensure implementors would have sufficient tools for making choices about the potential implementation. This included life-cycle assessment of quantitative sustainability indicators and life cycle-costing for economic indicators. This project addressed new guidance on Waste Acceptance Criteria and contributed with a revised Strategic Research Agenda to guide future predisposal activities, complimentary to the holistic waste management programme. Knowledge Management actions were also an integral part of the whole project to foster competence development and capturing knowledge. Actions included training, mobility, and guidance especially through online forums such as webinars and digital training. This paper provides a snapshot of some of the key outcomes and impacts from the project, from technical as well as strategic and knowledge perspectives. Hierfür ist eine Vielzahl von Methoden und Sensoren verfügbar. Das Portfolio weist aber insbesondere bei der Detektion langsamer, räumlich begrenzter Veränderungen Lücken auf. Hierfür sind bisher sehr aufwändige Untersuchungen oder Installationen notwendig. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden Sensoren und zugehörige Auswertemethoden für die Ultraschalltransmission vorgestellt, die sich für die zerstörungsfreie, dauerhafte Überwachung von Beton eignen. Direkt oder nachträglich in Betonkonstruktionen eingebaut, ermöglichen sie eine nicht nur lokale, sondern größere Raumbereiche umfassende Dauerüberwachung von Änderungen der Materialeigenschaften. Das Prinzip der Ultraschalltransmission und die verschiedenen Einflussparameter werden vorgestellt. Zu letzteren gehören neben der Belastung und Schädigung auch Umweltparameter wie Temperatur und Feuchte. Verschiedene Methoden zur Datenanalyse, wie z. B. die Codawelleninterferometrie, ermöglichen eine Detektion kleinster Veränderungen. Die in den Beton einzubettenden Ultraschallsensoren werden vorgestellt und ihr Einbau und Betrieb beschrieben. Various methods and sensors are used for this purpose. But the technologies available today have difficulties in detecting slowly progressing locally confined damages. Extensive investigations or instrumentations are required so far for this purpose. In this study we present new sensors and data processing methods for ultrasonic transmission, which can be used for non-destructive permanent monitoring of concrete. They can be mounted during construction or thereafter. Larger volumes can be monitored by a limited number of sensors for changes of material properties. The principles of ultrasonic transmission and influencing factors are presented. This latter include load, damages as well as environmental parameters as temperature or moisture. Various methods for data processing, e. g. coda wave interferometry are introduced. They allow the detection of very small changes in the medium. The embedded sensors are shown including mounting and operation. Application examples so far include small scale laboratory freeze-thaw experiments, localizing loads in larger concrete models and monitoring load effects on real structures. T1 - Monitoring von Querkraftversuchen an Spannbetondurchlaufträgern mit Ultraschall und Codawelleninterferometrie T1 - Monitoring of shear tests on prestressed concrete continuous beams using ultrasound and coda wave interferometry N2 - Zusammenfassung Im Rahmen eines Forschungsvorhabens an der RWTH Aachen wurden mehrere Spannbetondurchlaufträger bis zum Versagen belastetet. Neben umfangreicher konventioneller Messtechnik wurden zusätzlich innovative Messmethoden durch die Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und –prüfung (BAM) getestet. Darunter waren eingebettete Ultraschall-Transducer, deren Daten mit einer neuartigen Methode, der Codawelleninterferometrie (CWI), ausgewertet wurden. Dieses Verfahren detektiert auch kleinste Änderungen im Signal und in der Wellengeschwindigkeit gegenüber einer Referenzmessung. Hiermit können Belastungs- und Strukturänderungen sowie Schäden sehr viel sensibler angezeigt werden als bei konventionellen Ultraschallmessungen. Durch eine Modifikation des Verfahrens mit gleitender Referenz können aber auch starke Veränderungen im Material, wie sie bei Bruchversuchen auftreten, erfasst werden. In den Versuchen gelang es mit Netzwerken aus bis zu 20 Ultraschall-Transducern, Spannungskonzentrationen und Rissbildungen qualitativ zu detektieren und zu verfolgen, ohne dass die Sensoren direkt am Ort der Änderung angebracht sein müssen. N2 - Abstract In the framework of a research project at RWTH Aachen University, a set of large scale post-tensioned concrete continuous beams has been loaded until failure. In addition to conventional measurement techniques, innovative methods like embedded ultrasonic transducers have been applied by the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM). The data acquired with theses transducers has been processed with a novel method called coda wave interferometry (CWI). This technique is able to detect even very small changes in the ultrasonic signal and in wave velocity. Loads or structural changes as well as damages can be detected with a much higher sensitivity compared to conventional measurements. Using a modification of the technique with step-wise referencing larger changes in the material can be followed as well. In the experiments, networks of up to 20 ultrasonic transducers have been used. Stress concentrations and crack formation have been detected and monitored qualitatively, without having to place the transducers directly at the place of interest. Aus den Wellengeschwindigkeiten lassen sich dynamische Elastizitätsmoduln und – nach lokaler Kalibrierung – auch Druckfestigkeiten ermitteln. Zudem ergeben sich Hinweise auf Risse und andere Materialschwächungen. Der Einsatz erfolgt vor allem im Labor oder an der Bauwerksoberfläche. Neuerdings werden auch Monitoringsysteme mit eingebetteten Sensoren auf Ultraschallbasis erfolgreich getestet. Die Talsperre Eibenstock dient als größte Sperre in Sachsen der Trinkwasserversorgung und dem Hochwasserschutz. Hier wurden während der Bauphase im Jahr 1979 im Fußbereich des Mauerkörpers Ultraschallsensoren eingebracht, die in Verbindung mit einem Messoszilloskop eine Überwachung der Erhärtung des Mauerbetons ermöglichten. Der für die Sensorauswahl eingesetzte Messstellenumschalter wurde im September 2011 grundlegend instand gesetzt. Danach zeigte sich, dass die eingebetteten Sensoren selbst sowie die Verkabelung auch nach über fünfunddreißig Jahren in einwandfreiem Zustand sind. Eine nunmehr aufgelegte Messserie mit modernem Gerät von über einem Jahr mit ein- bis zweimonatigen Intervallen zeigte, dass die Wellengeschwindigkeit seit der Bauphase noch einmal um gut 10 % zugenommen hat, was für eine erhöhte Druckfestigkeit spricht. Innerhalb des Jahres zeigten sich auch bei Einsatz neuer, sehr sensibler Auswertemethoden (sog. Codawelleninterferometrie) nur geringfügige Schwankungen. Diese waren auch nicht zu erwarten, da sich die Füllhöhe zu den Messzeitpunkten nur gering unterschied, die Temperatur im Bauwerksinneren nur wenig schwankte und der Bauwerkszustand sehr gut ist. Die Aussagen zur Betongüte sind direkt vergleichbar mit den früheren Mess- und Untersuchungsergebnissen an der Talsperre Gottleuba, die im gleichen Zeitraum errichtet wurde und ebenfalls mit einem Ultraschallsystem ausgerüstet war. Die Experimente zeigten, dass ein Einsatz von Ultraschallsystemen für die Bauwerksüberwachung auch über Jahrzehnte möglich ist. Dies war im vorliegenden Fall nie geplant, aber durch den Einsatz der Mitarbeiter vor Ort und der Herstellerfirma möglich. Bei zukünftigen Systemen ist eine langfristige Planung unter Einbeziehung aller Beteiligten sowie eine Einbindung in Überwachungs- und Wartungspläne notwendig, damit die qualitätsgesichert gewonnen Daten gewinnbringend genutzt werden können. Under 980 nm laser excitation, intense upconversion emission peaks of Tm3+ and Er3+ were observed for all samples. By doping Tm3+ and Er3+ with core–shell partitioning, not only a significant increase in fluorescence intensity could be achieved, but also simultaneous temperature measurements on multiple thermocouple energy levels could be realised. In addition, the temperature sensing performance of different thermocouple energy levels was also investigated, and it was found that the 3 F3 → 3 H6 and 1 G4 → 3 F4 thermocouple energy level pairs of Tm3+ were the best, with maximum absolute sensitivity and maximum relative sensitivity of up to 0.0250 K−1 and 2.155% K−1 respectively, higher than the sensitivity of other thermocouple energy levels. It has a temperature resolution of less than 0.0139 K, which is lower than that of most materials available today. By using this material as a probe to build a fiber optic temperature sensor platform, it was found to have reliable temperature measurement performance. The physical phase, morphology, structure, and fluorescence properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ζ potential analysis, and fluorescence spectroscopy. It was found that the material has a hexagonal structure with good hydrophilicity and emits intense fluorescence under 980 nm pump laser excitation. The non-contact temperature sensing performance of nanoparticles was evaluated by analyzing the upconversion fluorescence of Tm3+ (1G4 → 3F4 and 3F3 → 3H6) in the temperature range of 284−344 K. The absolute and relative sensitivities were found to be 0.0067 K−1 and 1.08 % K−1, respectively, with high-temperature measurement reliability and good temperature cycling performance. More importantly, its temperature measurement in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution is accurate. In addition, the temperature of the cells can be increased by adjusting the laser power density and laser irradiation time. Therefore, an optical temperature sensing platform was built to realize the application of real-time monitoring of cancer cell temperature and the dual function of photothermal therapy. Aiming at a better understanding of the role of tricalcium Aluminate (C3A) in cement hydration, we assessed the potential of optical spectroscopy in combination with a water-soluble fluorescent organic reporter dye (S0586) to monitor the early hydration of C3A in the presence of 26 wt% CaSO4.2H2O (C3A26G-S) with and without PCE. As optical methods, steady-state fluorescence and diffuse reflectance (UV–VisDR) spectroscopy were employed. Phase characterization and particle size distribution were performed with in-situ X-ray diffraction (in-situ XRD) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Our results show that fluorescence and UV–VisDR spectroscopy can be used to monitor the formation of metastable phases by the disaggregation of the dye S0586 in a cement paste as well as changes in ettringite formation. Addition of PCE slowed down the disaggregation of the dye as reflected by the corresponding changes of the dyes absorption and fluorescence. This prolonged induction period is a well-known side effect of PCEs and agrees with previous reported calorimetric studies and the Inhibition of gypsum dissolution observed by in-situ XRD. This demonstrates that fluorescence and UV–VisDR spectroscopy together with a suitable optical probe can provide deeper insights into the influence of PCE on C3A-gypsum hydration which could be e.g., utilized as screening method for comparing the influences of different types of PCEs. The metrology methods such as laser scanning, though accurate, are costly and less flexible for monitoring of layer-wise deposition. Photogrammetry is an optical measurement technique to reconstruct a 3D geometry using a series of 2D images in different orientations to ensure complete coverage. We propose here a novel attempt for rapid dimensioning of the deposit geometry using smartphone-based photogrammetry for wire arc directed energy deposition (DED-Arc). The recorded images from multiple viewpoints are used for feature extraction and matching and triangulation-based 3D reconstruction of the deposit geometry using open-source software. The reconstructed deposit surface is compared with the original CAD geometry to compare the dimensional consistency of parts during the DED-Arc process. Experimental validation is performed on both simple (cuboid) and complex (hollow cylindrical) aluminum geometries, as well as a steel deposit against laser scanning data. The results demonstrate that the smartphone-based photogrammetry can capture the layer-wise geometry variations with the maximum height deviations well within 15% of the laser scan measurements. Although reconstruction and post-processing times are slightly longer in photogrammetry, the approach provides a flexible, accessible, and cost-effective alternative for part profile monitoring. The expected utilities are calculated accounting for the probabilistic performance of a system in conjunction with the associated structural integrity and risk management actions throughout the life cycle, the associated benefits, structural risks, and costs and when performing SHM, the SHM information, their probabilistic outcomes, and costs. Recycling of multi-component materials containing mixed metals typically consists of three parts: liberation, separation, and recovery. In our study (RESOLVED – an EU Demonstration Project) the focus is on liberation and separation. The converting layer (CdTe) was liberated (removed) from the glass carrier by sandblasting and separated subsequently from the blast material (e.g. corundum) and other components using stepwise different separation techniques. Both the glass substrate and CdTe are subject to re-use. The overall feasibility of the recycling process is primarily governed by the efficiency of the procedure applied to the separation of CdTe from the rest (blasting material, glass residues, etc.). This was performed by water-based flotation. Several flotation procedures were studied regarding their separation yields. The distribution of CdTe in the phases involved (flotate, water, residue) was measured using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRS) intended for future routine application and by instrumental large-volume photon activation analysis (IPAA) as a reference procedure. Sewage sludge is the pollutant sink of wastewater treatment and thus loaded with contaminants that might pose environmental hazards. Incineration degrades organic pollutants efficiently, but since the ash is currently mostly disposed of, all valuable component like phosphorus (P) and technologically relevant metals present in the sewage sludge ash (SSA) are removed from the economic cycle entirely. We conducted a complete survey of SSA from German mono-incineration facilities and determined the theoretical recovery potential of 57 elements. German SSA contains up to 19,000 t/a P which equals approximately 13% of phosphorus applied in the German agriculture in form of phosphate rock based mineral fertilizers. Thus, SSA is an important secondary resource of P. However, its P-solubility in ammonium citrate solution, an indicator for the bioavailability, is only about 26%. Treatment of SSA is recommended to enhance P bioavailability and remove heavy metals before it is applied as fertilizer. The recovery potential for technologically relevant metals is generally low, but some of these elements might be recovered efficiently in the course of P recovery exploiting synergies. Parameters explored from the UCNP side included particle size, morphology, surface chemistry or coating, luminescence properties, and concentration in different cement mixtures. From the cement side, the influence of the mineral composition of the cement matrix was representatively examined for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and its constituents tricalcium aluminate (C3A), tricalcium silicate (C3S), and gypsum at different water to cement ratios. Based on reflection and luminescence measurements, enabling online monitoring, which were complemented by XRD and isothermal heat-flow calorimetric measurements to determine whether the incorporation of these particles could impair cement hydration processes, well suited lanthanide particle reporters could be identified as well as application conditions. In addition, thereby the reporter influence on cement hydration kinetics could be minimized while still preserving a high level of information content. The best performance for the luminescence probing of changes during early stage cement hydration processes was observed for 25 nm-sized oleate (OA)-coated UCNPs added in a concentration of 0.1 wt %. Higher UCNP amounts of 1.0 wt % delayed cement hydration processes size- and surface coatingspecifically in the first 24 h. Subsequent luminescence stability screening studies performed over a period of about one year support the applicability of UCNPs as optical authentication tags for construction materials. A novel methodology is proposed where changes in the member condition due to an increase in the earthquake-type loading of a full-scale column-foundation specimen are correlated with changes in the recorded ultrasonic waveforms. The discussed preliminary analysis of the ultrasonic signals is based on wave propagation velocity, changes in the coda wave portion, and maximum amplitude of the signals. Thus ambitious energy programs have been initiated aiming at the establishment of renewable energies as a main contributor to the energy mix in the next decade. Like no other renewable energy, the offshore wind energy possesses a high potential and constitutes the main contributor to this aim. The development of large scale wind parks is one of the major challenges in the offshore industry today while the first wind parks of significant size and in considerable water depths are being built. In preparation for the next step, this thesis aims to contribute to the efficient and cost effective operation of wind parks. It specifically addresses the support of the inspection and maintenance activities of offshore wind turbines by the development of methods for the assessment and monitoring of support structures. The essential finding of this thesis is that the operation efficiency of wind turbine structures can be significantly enlarged by monitoring based assessment procedures. It is found that a substantial expected life-cycle benefit for the operation can be achieved by the conceptual integration of structural monitoring techniques in the structural reliability theory. The integration should be bidirectional in the sense that the generic design decisions for structural monitoring systems are based on a structural reliability assessment and that simultaneously a possible reduction of the uncertainty associated with the condition is utilized for the structural reliability assessment and thus for the inspection and maintenance planning. The thesis covers the issues of (I) the integration of monitoring data in the framework for structural reliability assessment of the Joint Committee on Structural Safety (JCSS), (II) the issue of the consistent determination of the measurement uncertainties utilizing all available information of the measurement process, (III) the issue of the application of monitoring techniques for structural integrity management and (IV) the establishment of a full probabilistic performance model basis for the support structure of an offshore wind turbine. To cover these issues the thesis comprises (1) the development of probabilistic structural, loading and limit state models, (2) a response surface algorithm for a multiple component reliability analysis, (3) a reliability analysis of an offshore wind turbine support structure applying the model basis, (4) a framework for the determination of measurement uncertainties utilizing process and observation data and (5) concepts for utilizing monitoring data in a structural reliability analysis as well as for the risk based inspection planning. The starting point of this thesis is the development of the model basis containing the models for the structural performance of a reference case, namely a support structure of an offshore wind turbine. The model basis comprises the structural, loading and probabilistic characterization of the ultimate, fatigue and the serviceability limit states and is derived considering the constitutive physical equations. The introduced models for the structural performance and loads account for design, production and execution information. A sensitivity study is performed on the basis of a non-linear coefficient of correlation. The process of establishing and analyzing these models contributes to an enhanced understanding of the performance of the structure and is documented in detail. The reliability analysis of an offshore wind turbine support structure builds upon the developed model basis. In order to facilitate the reliability analysis with such complex multiple component models, an adaptive response surface algorithm is developed. This algorithm utilizes clustered experimental designs in combination with an efficient augmentation scheme for these designs. The results of the reliability analyses comprise the system reliabilities and the probabilities of failure for the components in the individual limit states. With these results critical components are identified. A comparison with the target reliabilities specified in DIN EN 1990 (2002) shows that the target reliabilities are met. A novel contribution, as mentioned above, constitutes a new approach for the determination of measurement uncertainties in the context of the structural reliability theory. This approach builds upon two types of measurement uncertainties (as defined in the ISO/IEC Guide 98-3 (2008a)), namely the uncertainty based on a statistical analysis of observations and the uncertainty derived from a process equation describing physically the measurement process. Both types of measurement uncertainties are utilized for the derivation of a posterior measurement uncertainty by Bayesian updating. This facilitates the quantification of a measurement uncertainty using all available data of the measurement process. The measurement uncertainty models derived are analyzed through a sensitivity study and are discussed in detail resulting in an identification of the most relevant sources of measurement uncertainties. For the utilization of monitoring data in a structural reliability analysis the approach for the determination of measurement uncertainties data is applied. Monitoring data can be interpreted in two ways, namely as probabilistic loading model information and as probabilistic resistance model information, i.e. proof loading. For both ways the influence of the measurement uncertainties on the structural reliability is shown and how the specific modeling of monitoring data in a reliability analysis can result in a reduction of uncertainties and as a consequence in an increase of the reliability. The proof loading concept is developed further to account for probabilistic proof loading information, i.e. information subjected to measurement uncertainties. In conjunction with an alternative proof loading concept utilizing Bayesian updating techniques, a criterion to facilitate a consistent choice of the appropriate proof loading method is developed. The developed approaches and the findings are applied in a life-cycle cost-benefit analysis comprising the expected costs of failure, of inspection, of repair and of the monitoring system as well as its operation. Here, concepts for the design decision support of monitoring systems are introduced by formulating the life-cycle cost-benefit analysis as an optimization problem. On this basis, it can be determined which components should be monitored to achieve a life cycle benefit. Furthermore, an approach for the reduction of monitoring period is introduced. The most significant result of the cost-benefit analysis is that a substantial expected life-cycle benefit is achievable by the application of the developed concepts. Am Beispiel von Rohrleitungen, sollen im Rahmen des Projekts AGIFAMOR an der Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), im Sinne einer Machbarkeitsstudie die Verfahren der verteilten akustischen und faseroptischen Sensorik zur kontinuierlichen Überwachung und Detektion potentiell gefährlicher Veränderungen in Industrieanlagen erprobt und qualifiziert werden. Dabei sollen die Applikation der optischen Sensorfasern hinsichtlich der Signalübertragung auf den Sensor optimiert und die Erkennung der für dieses Anwendungsgebiet relevanten Schallsignaturen entwickelt werden. Mithilfe eines solchen Messsystems können mit geringem Aufwand ausgedehnte Strukturen, auch unter erschwerten Bedingungen (z.B. hohe Temperatur, Einfluss von Chemikalien) kontinuierlich überwacht werden. They can be installed during construction or thereafter. Large volumes of concrete can be monitored for changes of material properties by a limited number of transducers. The transducer design, the main properties as well as installation procedures are presented. It is shown that compressional waves with a central frequency of 62 kHz are mainly generated around the transducer's axis. The transducer can be used as a transmitter or receiver. Application examples demonstrate that the transducers can be used to monitor concrete conditions parameters (stress, temperature, …) as well as damages in an early state or the detection of acoustic events (e.g., crack opening). Besides application in civil engineering our setups can also be used for model studies in geosciences. Information on a deteriorating structure obtained through inspection or monitoring is included in the reliability assessment through Bayesian updating of the system deterioration model. The updated system reliability is then obtained through coupling the updated deterioration model with a probabilistic structural model. The underlying high-dimensional structural reliability problems are solved using subset simulation, which is an efficient and robust sampling-based algorithm suitable for such analyses. The approach is demonstrated in two case studies considering a steel frame structure and a Daniels system subjected to high-cycle fatigue. Environmentally relevant exposure data are still essential for a realistic risk assessment of the harmful health potential of microplastics in freshwater systems. This study addresses a large data set of MP concentrations analyzed and processed under statistical aspects and provides mass concentrations as well as associated size fractions of the detected MP. Over a 12 month period, samples were collected at three locations and analyzed across three particle size fractions (100−500 μm, 50−100 μm, and 10−50 μm) using thermalextraction desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TED-GC/MS). The most prevalent polymers identified were polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), styrene−butadiene rubber (SBR), and natural rubber (NR). Statistical analyses, including principal component and cluster analysis, revealed size-dependent patterns,minor seasonal variation and spatial variations. These findings are particularly significant for ecotoxicological research and regulatory development, especially regarding tire abrasion a rarely quantified but potentially harmful MP source. Robust and fast analytical methods are the basis of legal regulations. Currently, only macro- and large microplastic contents (>1 mm) are measured. Microplastics (1–1,000 µm), are not yet monitored. Thermal analytical methods are suitable for this purpose, which can determine the mass content and can also be operated fully automatically in routine mode. Thermal extraction desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TED-GC/MS) allows the identification of polymers and the determination of mass contents in solid samples from natural environments. In accordance with the German or European Commission (EC) Fertiliser Ordinance, composting plants should be monitored for microplastic particles with this method in the future. In this context a compost plant was sampled. At the end of the rotting process, the compost was sieved and separated in a coarse (>1 mm) and a fine fraction (<1 mm). The fine fraction was processed using density separation comparing NaCl and NaI as possible salt alternative and screened for microplastic masses by TED-GC/MS with additional validation and quality assurance experiments. With TED-GC/MS total microplastics mass contents of 1.1–3.0 μg/mg in finished compost could be detected with polyethylene mainly. What differs much to the total mass of plastics in the coarse fraction with up to 60 μg/mg, which were visually searched, identified via ATR-FTIR and gravimetrically weighted. The concentration of sulphate is a crucial factor for the formation of secondary phases and phase transitions of cement hydrates due to sulphate ingress into the microstructure. The sulphate attack on building materials for high and low sulphate concentrations was monitored by laboratory experiments. Hardened cement paste consisting of ordinary Portland cement (CEM I) were exposed to aqueous solutions of sodium sulphate for 18 months. Three sample compositions were used for this research, including different supplementary cementitious materials (SCM). The phase composition was determined for different time spans by high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Cross sections of exposed cement prisms were investigated as a representation of the microstructural profile. Based on the data, a temporal and spatial determination of the stages of the sulphate attack and the deterioration course was possible. Cement matrices blended with slag showed the highest resistance against sulphate attack. Die Ursachen dafür sind oft technisches, aber auch menschliches Versagen. Nicht zu unterschätzen ist die ständig wachsende Anzahl von Gefahrguttransporten auf deutschen Straßen. Waren 2002 noch 126 Mio. t Fracht mit Gefahrguttransporten im Straßenverkehr unterwegs, stieg die Frachtmenge im Jahr 2008 bereits auf 171 Mio. t. In den letzen Jahren ereigneten sich nach Angaben des statistischen Bundesamtes etwa 300 schwere Unfälle, an denen Gefahrguttransporte beteiligt waren. The fundamental principle thereby is that the dissolved contaminants are absorbed through water by the roots. Inside the plant the substances move upwards with the sap current into the trunk or stem and then into the leaves. Using an increment borer, tree cores can then be taken from the trunks of trees and analysed in the laboratory for pollutants. The measured contents can then provide us with insights into the subsurface contamination of a particular site. The scientific literature refers to this semi-quantitative procedure as “phytoscreening” (Sorek et eil., 2008). The suitability of phytoscreening for investigation or monitoring purposes could already be undoubtedly proven for some pollutants, particularly those in the group of chlorinated solvents. Das grundlegende Prinzip dabei ist, dass die gelösten Schadstoffe mit dem Wasser über die Wurzeln aufgenommen werden. Innerhalb der Pflanze werden die Stoffe mit dem Saftstrom nach oben in den Stamm oder in den Stängel und weiter in die Blätter verlagert. Mit einem Bohrer können Holzproben aus dem Stamm von Bäumen entnommen und im Labor auf Schadstoffe analysiert werden. Die gemessenen Gehalte geben dann Hinweise auf die Untergrundbelastung des Standortes. In der wissenschaftlichen Literatur wird dieses semiquantitative Verfahren als Phytoscreening bezeichnet.
