T1 - Graphene‑on‑gold surface plasmon resonance sensors resilient to high‑temperature annealing N2 - Gold films coated with a graphene sheet are being widely used as sensors for the detection of label-free binding interactions using surface plasmon resonance (SPR). During the preparation of such sensors, it is often essential to subject the sensor chips to a high-temperature treatment in order to ensure a clean graphene surface. However, sensor chips used currently, which often use chromium as an adhesion promoter, cannot be subjected to temperatures above 250 °C, because under such conditions, chromium is found to reorganize and diffuse to the surface, where it is easily oxidized, impairing the quality of SPR spectra. Here we present an optimized preparation strategy involving a three-cycle tempering coupled with chromium (oxide) etching, which allows the graphene-coated SPR chips to be annealed up to 500 °C with little deterioration of the surface morphology. In addition, the treatment delivers a surface that shows a clear enhancement in spectral response together with a good refractive index sensitivity. We demonstrate the applicability of our sensors by studying the kinetics of avidin–biotin binding at different pH repeatedly on the same chip. The possibility to anneal can be exploited to recover the original surface after sensing trials, which allowed us to reuse the sensor for at least six cycles of biomolecule adsorption. It is often unclear, if the signal in the spectrum is an unwanted contamination of the Field of View (FoV) or is it originated from outside. The reason is, that XPS-spectra are affected by beam shapes. Scheithauer proposed to measure Pt apertures of different diameters and normalize the Pt4f count rate by a second measurement on the Pt metal. It is based on the well-known isotope shift of approximately 15 pm for the electronic transition 22P←22S at around the wavelength of 670.8 nm, which can be measured by the state-of-the-art high-resolution continuum source graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. For isotope amount ratio analysis, a scalable tree boosting ML algorithm (XGBoost) was employed and calibrated using a set of samples with 6Li isotope amount fractions, ranging from 0.06 to 0.99 mol mol–1, previously determined by a multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS). The calibration ML model was validated with two certified reference materials (LSVEC and IRMM-016). The procedure was applied toward the isotope amount ratio determination of a set of stock chemicals (Li2CO3, LiNO3, LiCl, and LiOH) and a BAM candidate reference material NMC111 (LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2), a Li-battery cathode material. The results of these determinations were compared with those obtained by MC-ICP-MS and found to be metrologically comparable and compatible. The residual bias was −1.8‰, and the precision obtained ranged from 1.9 to 6.2‰. This precision was sufficient to resolve naturally occurring variations, as demonstrated for samples ranging from approximately −3 to +15‰. To assess its suitability to technical applications, the NMC111 cathode candidate reference material was analyzed using high-resolution continuum source atomic absorption spectrometry with and without matrix purification. The results obtained were metrologically compatible with each other. The freebase-porphyrin-sensitized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were tested for the degradation of the model pollutant Bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution, for the first time. MNPs with either cubic or spherical shape were synthesized using the sonochemical approach, followed by sensitizing with photoactive 4,4′,4′′,4′′′- (Porphine-5,10,15,20-tetrayl)tetrakis(benzoic acid) (TCPP). The resulted photocatalysts were characterized in detail by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, spectral techniques and vibrating sample magnetometry. The electron spin resonance experiments have confirmed the high activity of the photocatalysts through the efficient formation of singlet oxygen in solution. The optimum operational parameters for BPA degradation were established as follows: 1.0 μmol L−1 BPA, 1.0 g L−1 of photocatalyst, 100 μmol L−1 H2O2, under UVA irradiation. In these conditions, the results for both photocatalysts revealed that after only 10 min of reaction, over 64% and ca. 90% of BPA have been removed from solution in the absence and presence of H2O2, respectively. Whereas after 60 minutes of treatment, only 24% of BPA in real wastewater effluent samples were removed under UVA irradiation in the absence of H2O2, showing the high complexity of real wastewater. Moreover, both photocatalysts were successfully used for BPA removal in three consecutive runs, without significant loss of catalytic features. T1 - Quantitative assessment of the metabolic products of iron oxide nanoparticles to be used as iron supplements in cell cultures N2 - Iron nanoparticles (NPs) metabolism is directly associated to human health due to their use as anemia treatment and should be studied in detail in cells. Here we present a speciation strategy for the determination of the metabolic products of iron oxide nanoparticles coated by tartaric and adipic acids in enterocytes-like cell models (Caco-2 and HT-29). Such methodology is based on the use of SDS-modified reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separation using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) as Fe selective detector. Post-column isotope dilution analysis is used as quantification tool by adding Fe-57 as isotopically enriched standard. To assess the separation capability of the method, two different iron nanostructures: iron sucrose nanoparticles -Venofer®- used as model suspension and iron tartrate/adipate-modified nanoparticles, both of about 4 nm (core size) were evaluated. The two nanostructures were injected into the system showing good peak profiles and quantitative elution recoveries (>80%) in both cases. In addition, both nanoparticulate fractions could be based-line separated from ionic iron species, which needed to be complexed with 1mM citrate to elute from the column. Exposed cells up to 0.5mM of iron tartrate/adipate-modified nanoparticles were specifically treated to extract the internalized NPs and the extracts examined using the proposed strategy. The obtained results revealed the presence of three different fractions corresponding to nanoparticle aggregates, dispersed nanoparticles and soluble iron respectively in a single chromatographic run. Quantitative experiments (column recoveries ranging from 60 to 80%) revealed the presence of the majority of the Fe in the nanoparticulated form (>75%) by summing up the dispersed and aggregate particles. Such experiments point out the high uptake and low solubilization rate of the tartrate/adipate NPs making these structures highly suitable as Fe supplements in oral anemia treatments. A1 - Unger, Wolfgang T1 - A new test specimen for the determination of the field of view of small-area X-ray photoelectron spectrometers N2 - Small-area/spot photoelectron spectroscopy (SAXPS) is a powerful tool for the investigation of small surface features like microstructures of electronic devices, sensors or other functional surfaces, and so forth. For evaluating the quality of such microstructures, it is often crucial to know whether a small signal in a spectrum is an unwanted contamination of the field of view (FoV), defined by the instrument settings, or it originated from outside. To address this issue, the d80/20 parameter of a line scan across a chemical edge is often used. However, the typical d80/20 parameter does not give information on contributions from the long tails of the X-ray beam intensity distribution or the electron-optical system as defined by apertures. In the VAMAS TWA2 A22 project “Applying planar, patterned, multi-metallic samples to assess the impact of analysis area in surface-chemical analysis,” new test specimen was developed and tested. The here presented testing material consists of a silicon wafer substrate with an Au-film and embedded Cr circular and square spots with decreasing dimensions from 200 μm down to 5 μm. The spot sizes are traceable to the length unit due to size measurements with a metrological SEM. For the evaluation of the FoV, we determined the Au4f intensities measured with the center of the FoV aligned with the center of the spot and normalized to the Au4f intensity determined on the Au-film. With this test specimen, it was possible to characterize, as an example, the FoV of a Kratos AXIS Ultra DLD XPS instrument. T1 - Cooperation in publicly funded reference material production N2 - The meeting was organised by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre and held at the JRC-Geel site on 22–23 February 2018. It was a follow-up of a similar meeting held in 2009. The objective of the meeting was to exchange information about ongoing publicly funded reference material (RM) production, identify areas of interest for future specific RMs, including certified reference material (CRM) developments, investigate potential areas of collaboration, and to identify areas which may be of a lower importance in the future for a specific RM producer. The benefit of exchanging such information is to avoid duplication of efforts in RM production, make better use of public funds by potentially matching competencies, and to address problems that are common to publicly funded RM producers. However, drawbacks of these methods include the high costs for instruments and their operation, experienced operators and elaborate chromatographic sample preparation which are time consuming. We propose a lower-cost and faster optical alternative for the analysis of isotope ratios of selected elements: high-resolution continuum source molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-MAS). Stable isotope amount compositions of boron (B) and magnesium (Mg) were determined based on the absorption spectra of in-situ generated mono-hydrides and halide (MH and MX) using graphite furnace HR-CS-MAS. The use of a modular simultaneous echelle spectrograph (MOSES) helps to find the maximal isotope shift in the diatomic molecular spectra produced in a graphite furnace by using isotopic spike solutions. Isotopes of boron (10B and 11B) were studied via their hydrides for the electronic transition X 1Σ+ → A 1Π. The spectrum of a given sample is a linear combination of the 10BH molecule and its isotopologue 11BH. Therefore, the isotopic composition of samples can be calculated by a partial least square regression (PLS). For this, a spectral library was built by using samples and spikes with known isotope composition. Boron isotope ratios measured by HR-CS-MAS are identical with those measured by mass spectrometric methods at the 0.15 ‰ level. Similar results were obtained for a multiple isotope system like Mg (24Mg, 25Mg, and 26Mg), where isotope shifts of their isotopologues can be resolved in the MgF molecule for the electronic transition X 2Σ → A 2 Πi. The extension of this methodology to other elements like Li, Ca, Cu, and Sr is discussed. T2 - 13. Symposium „Massenspektrometrische Verfahren der Elementspurenanalyse“ zusammen mit dem 26. The properties of the PE frit meet the requirements for isotope dilution LA-ICPMS which are porous material, thermal and chemical resistance and high absorption efficiency. The breakthrough, however, as a support material, is the low sulphur blank, which is only two times of the gas flow blank (2.3-4.0 x 10⁴ cps). Additionally, the porosity of the frit was considered, as it directly affects the absorption efficiency for the sample solution, which is present in the cavities of the frit. The absorption efficiency was studied by loading sulphur standards with varying sulphur amounts (0 - 80 µg S) onto the frits. The remaining sulphur which was not absorbed by the frit was rinsed off and was measured by ICP-MS. This indirect method shows that more than 99.5 % of the loaded sulphur was absorbed by the frit. The so prepared frits with increasing sulphur amount were measured by LA-ICP-MS showing a good linearity between 0 µg S and 40 µg S with a coefficient of determination, r2 of 0.9987 and a sensitivity of 3.4x10⁴ cps µgˉ¹ for 32S. Three copper reference materials produced by BAM (BAM-M376a, BAM-228 and BAM-227) were selected to develop and validate the LA-ICP-IDMS procedure. The IDMS technique was applied to these samples as follows: the samples were spiked, dissolved, digested and then the digested solution was absorbed on the frits. The dried frit samples were then analyzed by LA-ICP-IDMS and it could be demonstrated that the sample solution dispersed on the frits did not influence the 32S/34S ratio significantly even though the sulphur intensities were fluctuating along the scan lines. Relative standard deviations of the isotope ratios were below 5 % in average between 3 lines (except for the pure spike solution and procedure blank). The measurement results were validated by comparing them with the results obtained by conventional ICP-IDMS. Plotting the mass fraction of sulphur in copper obtained by LA-ICP-IDMS versus those obtained by ICP-IDMS yields a linear curve with a correlation coefficient of 0.9999 showing a strong agreement between both techniques. The metrological traceability to the SI for the mass fraction of sulphur in copper is established by an unbroken chain of comparisons, each accompanied by an uncertainty budget. Thus, the measurement results are considered reliable, acceptable and comparable within the stated measurement uncertainty. The metrological traceability chain from the kg down to the final mass fraction in the samples obtained by LA-ICP-IDMS is illustrated in this presentation.
