It summarises the key breakthroughs achieved for various in situ investigation techniques, e.g. in situ experiments at the Synchrotron facility BESSY II (IR-SNOM and XRS), TEM and SMM instrumentation. The created experimental devices from diverse thin-film semiconductor materials paved the way to dynamic structural studies bearing the potential to determine nanoscale correlations between strain and electric fields and, moreover, for the fundamental development of new in situ capabilities. N2 - The thermodynamic behavior of thin PVME films including the irreversible adsorbed layer on the substrate is investigated. In a first step, the growth kinetics of the adsorbed layer was studied combining a leaching technique and atomic force microscopy. Further, it was shown that there is a critical initial film thickness for the formation of a surface-filling adsorbed layer. Additionally, spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements were carried out to investigate the influence of the adsorbed layer on the glass transition temperature of the thin films. For 30 nm films and below, the influence of the adsorbed layer percolates strongly to the bulk-like layer of the film. Finally, the molecular dynamics of the adsorbed layer was studied by broadband dielectric spectroscopy, employing nanostructured-electrode systems. One process was revealed, which was assigned either to molecular fluctuations taking place in a loosely-bounded the part of the adsorbed layer, or to the desorption/adsorption of segments at the substrate. Metal−dielectric−metal (MDM) structures are well known to support strong magnetic polariton resonances in the optical and near-infrared range. We extend the current understanding of such an MDM structure by specifically designing Au disc arrays on top of ZnS−Au−Si substrates and pushing their resonances to the mid-IR regime. Therefore, we combine fabrication via lift-off photolithography with the finite element method and an inductance−capacitance model. With this combination of techniques, we demonstrate that the magnetic polariton resonance of the first order strongly depends on the individual disc diameter. Furthermore, the fabrication of multiple discs within one unit cell allows a linear combination of the fundamental resonances to conceive broadband absorptance. Quite importantly, even in mixed resonator cases, the absorptance spectra can be fully described by a superposition of the individual disc properties. Our contribution provides rational guidance to deterministically design mid-IR emitting materials with specific narrow- or broadband properties. A1 - Meermann, Björn T1 - Understanding the Stability and Recrystallization Behavior of Amorphous Zinc Phosphate N2 - Zinc phosphate, an important pigment in phosphate conversion coatings, forms protective films on rubbing surfaces. We have simulated the underlying reactions under shear by ball-milling zinc phosphate and monitored the reaction of hopeite (Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O) and the retarded recrystallization of the amorphous reaction product by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and quantitative infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Abrasion of stainless steel was simulated by addition of pure 57Fe. The results provide insight into the chemistry of phosphate conversion coatings or during battery cycling of metal phosphates and give theoretical guidance for the preparation of amorphous phosphates. Thermal analysis revealed that the release of structural water is a key step during the reaction of hopeite under shear to ball-milled amorphous zinc phosphate. The back-reaction and associated recrystallization kinetics of amorphous zinc phosphate show a classical Langmuir behavior. Fe impurities inhibit the recrystallization of ball-milled amorphous zinc phosphate strongly. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and PXRD revealed that Fe is oxidized to Fe2+ and Fe3+ during ball-milling and incorporated locally at the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the structure. Ball-milled amorphous zinc phosphate is metastable as γ-Zn3−xFex(PO4)2. EPR studies showed the incorporation of Fe3+ to be coupled with the formation of Zn2+ vacancies. The Fe3+ defect sites bind water because of their higher Pearson hardness (compared to Fe2+ and Zn2+), thereby reducing water mobility and inhibiting further reactions like the recrystallization to hopeite. Our findings reveal the amorphization mechanism of Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O in stainless steel ball mills at the atomic scale and highlight how the reactivity of amorphous products is affected by impurities associated with the processing method. Over the course of several years, the ellipsometry lab at BAM has become an accredited testing lab according to ISO/IEC 17025 laying bare the need of better methods for accuracy and traceability. Despite its wide range of application in both research and development as well as industry, there have been no generally accepted standards dealing with model validation and measurement uncertainties. Based on the first German standard DIN 50989 – 1: 2018 Ellipsometry - Part 1: Principles (currently international standard ISO 23131: 2021) and under consideration of GUM [1] a series of standards for ellipsometry was developed. The entire 6-part series covers several model-based application cases. This standards series avoids having narrow and material specific application cases but instead classifies applications of ellipsometry according to the sample complexity. The concept of ellipsometric transfer quantities (Ψ and Δ or alternatively the elements of transfer matrices) is implemented in the series. For each application case a model-based validation strategy was developed. Thus, the standards are applicable to all materials, instruments and measuring principles. The uniform structure concept of the series facilitates its practical applicability for users. The standards include the model-based GUM-compliant determination/estimation of the measurement uncertainties. In addition, the appendices of the documents contain numerous measurement and simulation examples as well as recommendations for measuring practice. T1 - Layering misalignment and negative temperature dependence of interfacial free energy of B2-liquid interfaces in a glass forming system N2 - From molecular dynamics simulations and the capillary fluctuation method, the solid-liquid interfacial free energy has been computed for the B2-liquid interface in the Cu-Zr system. Consistent with previous results for the FCC-liquid interface in Cu-Zr and Al-Sm but atypical of most alloys, was found to increase as the temperature is lowered. In addition, the temperature dependence was obtained for model Lennard-Jones B2-liquid alloys. In all cases the unusual temperature dependence of is correlated with an atomic structure of the interfacial region characterized by a misalignment of the number density peaks between solvents and solutes. In cases where the number density peaks are aligned, the typical temperature dependence is observed. The results are discussed in terms of the Gibbs theory of the thermodynamics of interfaces. It is proposed that the unique interfacial structure and the atypical temperature dependence of are hallmarks of an easy glass forming alloy. The model considers the result of two combined mechanisms: (a) the dynamical diffraction of electrons emitted coherently from point sources in a crystal and (b) diffraction effects on incoherent diffuse intensity distributions. Using suitable parameter settings, the refined simulation model allows to reproduce various thickness- and energy-dependent features which are observed in experimental Kikuchi diffraction patterns. Excess-deficiency features are treated by the effect of gradients in the incoherent background intensity. Based on the analytical two-beam approximation to dynamical electron diffraction, a phenomenological model of excess-deficiency features is derived, which can be used for pattern matching applications. The model allows to approximate the effect of the incident beam geometry as a correction signal for template patterns which can be reprojected from pre-calculated reference data. As an application, we find that the accuracy of fitted projection centre coordinates in EBSD and TKDcan be affected by changes in the order of 10−3–10−2 if excess-deficiency features are not considered in the theoreticalmodel underlying a best-fit pattern matching approach. Correspondingly, the absolute accuracy of simulation-based EBSD strain determination can suffer frombiases of a similar order of magnitude if excess-deficiency effects are neglected in the simulation model. Die Vielfalt von chemischen Recyclingverfahren ist groß. Die Kapazitäten der Anlagen sind heute noch gering und die Wirtschaftlichkeit wird stark vom Ölpreis beeinflusst. In this context, a number of studies have already revealed that nucleation in the CaSO4-H2O system is non-classical, where the formation of the different crystalline phases involves several steps including a common amorphous precursor. In this contribution a holistic view of the formation mechanism of gypsum and bassanite from solution will be presented. In short, our in situ and time-resolved scattering data demonstrate that calcium sulfate precipitation starts with the formation and aggregation of well-defined sub-3 nm primary species. These species constitute building “bricks'' of an amorphous precursor phase. We characterised the “bricks” by combining information obtained at different length-scales accessible at the mesoscale (from small-angle scattering) and at the atomic-length-scale (wide-angle scattering and high-energy diffraction). From these scattering data we derived pair distribution functions of the clusters and restricted their external shapes and dimensions. This allowed us to propose a structure of the primary species and to explore their dynamic properties with unbiased MD simulations using polarizable force fields. The formation of the amorphous phase involves the aggregation of these small primary species into larger disordered aggregates exhibiting “brick-in-the-wall” structure. The actual crystallisation occurs by the restructuring and coalescence of the “bricks” into a given calcium sulfate phase depending on the thermodynamic conditions of the solution. Importantly, these rearrangement processes by no means continue until a (nearly-)perfect homogeneous single crystal is obtained. Instead they come to a stop or at least significantly slow down. Such a process thus yields a final imperfect mesocrystal, composed of smaller domains rather than a continuous crystal structure, within which the domains are separated by an amorphous calcium sulfate phase. This surface engineering Technology enables the generation of dome-shaped, elevated and highly wear resistant microfeatures on tool surfaces in consequence of a localized dispersing of hard ceramic particles via pulsed laser radiation. As a result, the topography and material properties of the tool and thus the tribological interactions at the blank-die interface are locally influenced. However, a suitable selection of hard ceramic particles is imperative for generating defect-free surface features with a high share of homogenously disturbed particles. For this purpose, different niobium (NbB2 and NbC) as well as titanium-based (TiB2 and TiC) materials were embedded on hot working tool specimens and subsequently analyzed with regard to their resulting shape and mechanical properties. Während der Umformoperation treten jedoch hohe Reibungs- und Verschleißerscheinungen an den interagierenden Werkzeug- und Werkstückwirkflächen auf, die sowohl die Bauteilqualität als auch die Maschinenstandzeit nachhaltig beeinträchtigen. Um die bestehenden Verfahrensgrenzen zu erweitern, wird daher eine Modifikation der Presshärtewerkzeuge mittels Laserimplantation angestrebt. Hierbei werden in die Werkzeugoberfläche keramische Hartstoffpartikel anhand eines gepulsten Laserstrahles eingebettet, infolgedessen kuppelförmige sowie höchstfeste Strukturen im Mikrometerbereich entstehen. Die Auswahl geeigneter Hartstoffmaterialien stellt jedoch ein entscheidendes und bisweilen limitierendes Kriterium dar, um defektfreie sowie verschleißresistente Oberflächenmodifikationen zu generieren. In diesem Zusammenhang wurden im Rahmen dieser Arbeit unterschiedliche titanbasierte Hartstoffpartikel auf presshärtespezifische Werkzeugstähle laserimplantiert und anschließend mittels modifizierten Pin-on-Disk-Tests hinsichtlich ihres tribologischen Einsatzverhaltens untersucht. One possible goal is the development of electrochemical conversion processes using catalysts. Porous materials play an important role in such energy applications. The key to the development of improved catalysts is a better understanding of the relations between their performance, stability and physico-chemical properties. However, the complex morphology of such catalysts constitutes a challenge even for modern analytical techniques. Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) is a versatile method for studying material properties by using appropriate models (e.g. film thickness, optical and electronic properties). The fact that the material properties cannot be taken directly from the measured spectra, the developed models have to be validated. In a first step, the model for the ellipsometric fit studies of a calcination series of mesoporous iridium oxide films (300 – 600 °C) was investigated and validated with respect to their material properties. Moreover, the electronic structures of the catalysts reveal a direct correlation with electrochemical activities. The development of an environmental cell offers the possibility of investigations under real conditions. T1 - La invencíon del Sacromonte: How and Why Scholars Debated about the Lead Books of Granada for Two Hundred Years N2 - At the end of the sixteenth century, a number of relics and artefacts were discovered in Granada, Spain. They included what became known as the Lead Books of the Sacromonte, twenty-one written artefacts made of circular lead leaves engraved in archaic Arabic characters. The authorship was attributed to some Arab disciples of St James the Greater considered to be the first evangelisers of the Iberian Peninsula. The texts, the materiality and the circumstances of the discoveries fuelled a debate surrounding their authenticity that lasted more than two centuries, a debate so fierce and controversial that not even papal condemnation in 1682 was able to stop it. Soon after the discoveries were made public, scholars highlighted the many contradictions and errors of a historical, linguistic and theological nature present in the texts, identifying members of the local Morisco community as possible forgers. This article focuses on how the scholarly community of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries handled these findings and looks at the methods employed by the scholars to evaluate the authenticity of the artefacts. It will also look at how the particular interests of the various authorities involved influenced the acceptance or dismissal of relevant academic results. Under fatigue loading condition, the material in the vicinity of the tip of a propagating crack repeatedly deforms plastically, leaving microscopic marks on the crack surface, commonly known as fatigue striations. Counting and measuring fatigue striations is a method in estimating the number of loading cycles a component went through until fracture. Some studies suggest a one-to-one relation between the number of fatigue striations and the number of load cycles, but this relation is still debatable, given that there are many factors influencing the formation of those striations. The main purpose of this work is to analyze the influence of microstructure and mechanical strength on the formation of fatigue striations in structural steels, in order to understand how these material properties are related to the fatigue crack behavior. For such, standard Charpy-V samples were subjected to hardness, fatigue and impact testing. Metallography was performed to characterize the microstructure, and a fractographic analysis by using optical and scanning electron microscopy was carried out to investigate the fracture surface. This study shows that steels with higher ductility have a closer one-to-one relation than those with a higher tensile strength. Above a certain level of tensile strength, fatigue striations do form rarely or completely disappear. N2 - Weit unterhalb der Streckfestigkeit des Werkstoffs kann es durch Schwingbruch zum Bauteilversagen kommen. Unter Schwingbeanspruchung wird der Werkstoff in der Nähe der Spitze eines sich ausbreitenden Risses wiederholt plastisch verformt. Dabei entstehen allgemein als Schwingstreifen bekannte mikroskopische Spuren. Das Zählen und Vermessen von Schwingstreifen ist ein Verfahren zum Schätzen der Anzahl von Belastungszyklen, denen ein Bauteil bis zum Bruch ausgesetzt war. Einige Studien legen hier eine 1 : 1-Beziehung zwischen der Anzahl von Schwingstreifen und der Anzahl von Lastspielen nahe. Dies erscheint angesichts der zahlreichen, die Bildung solcher Streifen beeinflussenden Faktoren allerdings fraglich. Hauptziel dieser Arbeit ist die Untersuchung der Auswirkungen des Gefüges und der mechanischen Festigkeit auf die Bildung von Schwingstreifen in Baustählen, um Zusammenhänge zwischen diesen Werkstoffeigenschaften und dem Schwingbruchverhalten verstehen zu können. Dafür wurden an Standard-Charpy-V-Proben Härte- sowie Schwing- und Schlagprüfungen durchgeführt. Zur Gefügecharakterisierung wurden die Proben metallographisch untersucht. Die Bruchfläche wurde zur Analyse fraktographisch licht- und rasterelektronenmikroskopisch untersucht. Die vorliegende Untersuchung zeigt dabei auf, dass Stähle mit einer höheren Duktilität näher an eine solche 1 : 1-Beziehung herankommen als solche mit einer höheren Zugfestigkeit. The façade elements presented are made of a shell of UHPC filled with blocks of aerated autoclaved concrete as insulating material. Self-cleaning properties were realized amongst others by imprinting a microstructure into the surface during casting. The paper focuses on selected technological aspects of the manufacturing process of prototypes which had to be performed in two concreting sections. Furthermore the challenges faced when upscaling the self-cleaning properties are addressed and the strategy to assess the self-cleaning properties by measuring the contact and the roll-off angel is presented. The results show that a successfull upscalaing process requires detailed planning and that the best results can often be achieved with a moderate work effort or material use. In the field of tribology, renowned institutions combine their testing and analytical capabilities to provide the respective services. The later will be offered in Europe via a Single-Entry Point (SEP). Due to this combination of services, a testbed is created consisting of more than 100 tribometers. Thus, a large variety of testers exists, either commercially available or in-house built. Each tester is optimised to simulate a specific tribological contact situation. Currently, there is no standard available for the design of such testers. Especially, the way forces (normal load, friction force) and distances (e.g. stroke, linear wear) are measured, recorded and pre-processed differs from type to type. These forces and distances are essential for the determination of wear/ wear rates and coefficients of friction (COF), the core results of tribo-tests. This matter is complicated by the fact that e.g. for reciprocating motion, there are at least four different ways to determine COF. Depending on the testing conditions, these ways can lead to considerably different results. Currently, it is not obligatory to specify the method used for determining the COF. In order to make data comparable, there is a need for measures which ensure that each tribometer is delivering similar, at best the same results under the same test conditions, irrespective of its manufacturer, design, location, determination method and even operator. The way forward are improved Round-Robin tests. First results and other challenges faced by creating comparable tribological data will be considered in the present contribution. These dependencies make a non-destructive estimation of an elastic constant possible. This preliminary study investigates the sensitivity of dispersion curves caused by a change in elastic constants. The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method is used to compute special dispersion curves, which show the sensitivity value of the frequency and group velocity as a colour value. This representation allows for easy identification of patterns and local effects. Two sets of dispersion curves are presented, one set for a steel plate and the other set for a plate made of a carbon fibre reinforced polymer. In general, we notice that the sensitivity often increases with the frequency and that higher-order modes seem to be more suitable for material characterisation. Moreover, specific modes respond to material changes while others are relatively unaffected, which must be taken into consideration for material characterisation. Part II: Modeling of osmium-platinum system at high pressure/high temperature N2 - In Part I of this paper, we have described a modification brought to the model of Lu (X.-G. Lu et al., Comput. Coupling Phase Diagr. Thermochem. 29 (2005) 49–55) in order to avoid extrapolation problems at high pressure and temperature. We now extend this approach to the study of a binary system: Os–Pt. For this, a complete description (equation of state) of Os at high pressure/high temperature is provided including the liquid phase. The thermodynamic assessment of the system Os–Pt has been carried out at ambient pressure by the Calphad method. All this study has been supported by first principles, special quasi-random structure (including under high pressure) and phonon calculations. Finally, using the high pressure description of metastable structures (hcp Pt and fcc Os), we have been able to obtain by extrapolation a complete description of Os–Pt system up to 500 GPa. Recent experimental data for Os–Pt system obtained up to 50 GPa at various temperatures up to 2300 °C may us allow to validate our modeling approach. A three-step thermal decomposition mechanism of (NH4)2[PtCl6] in the inert atmosphere with the intermediate products Pt(NH3)2Cl2 and PtCl2 has been found instead one-[G.Meyer, A.Möller, J. Less. Common. Met. 170 (1991) 327–331] and two-step one [Q.Kong, F.Baudelet, J.Han, S.Chagnot, L.Barthe, J.Headspith, R. Goldsbrough, F.E.Picca, O.Spalla, Sci. Rep. 2 (2012) 1018–1025] considered early. In the reducing atmosphere, the thermal decomposition is a two-step process with the formation of the intermediate PtCl2. The best approach to determining the number of thermal decomposition steps turned out to be the express-analysis of QXAFS spectra offered in the papers, based on the simultaneous presentation of the most important parameters extracted from X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) and Fourier transformed Extended XAFS (EXAFS). This express-analysis was tested by comparison with results of various approaches such as conventional EXAFS fitting, linear combination fit (LCF), Multivariate Curve Resolution Alternating Least Squares method (MCR ALS). T1 - Time-resolved study of Pd-Os and Pt-Os nanoalloys formation through thermal decomposition of Pd(NH3)(4) OsCl6 and Pt(NH3)(4) OsCl6 complex salts N2 - The formation mechanisms of Pd-Os and Pt-Os alloys in the course of thermal decomposition of iso-formular and isostructural complex salts [Pd(NH3)4][OsCl6] and [Pt(NH3)4][OsCl6] in an inert atmosphere have been studied by in-situ QXAFS, XPS and PXRD. The mechanisms of thermal decomposition of the precursors are found to differ from each other, but the detected intermediate products show no significant effect on the local atomic structure around Os, Pt/Pd in their final products. A crystalline beta-trans-[Pd(NH3)2Cl2] intermediate of the first step of thermal decomposition of [Pd(NH3)4][OsCl6] makes the anion [OsCl6]2− transform differently than that of [Pt(NH3)4][OsCl6]. It transforms into a short-lived [Os(NH3)xCl6-x] (2≤x≤4), and then to a distorted octahedron [OsCl6]2−, similar to the high-temperature modification of OsCl4. In case of [Pt(NH3)4][OsCl6], the intermediate [Os(NH3)2Cl4] modifies into four chlorine coordinated Os,{OsCl4}0/1−. Consecutive reduction of Pd(II)/Pt(II) and Os(IV) to the metals defines the homophilic atomic order with the fcc-Pd covered by a random Pd-Os alloy layer and Os on the surface, that is supported by High-Resolution Transmission Electron Mictroscopy (HRTEM) and Scanning TEM (STEM) energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) data, and the diffusion direction going from the surface (hcp-Os) to bulk (fcc-Pd/Pt). As a result, the heterogeneous alloys are formed with a very similar electronic and local atomic structure of Os and Pd/Pt. Upon alloying, the Os 5d5/2,3/2 and Pt 5d5/2,3/2 levels are depleted in the Pt-Os alloys compared to dispersed hcp-Os, fcc-Pt, and Pt foil. This is an unusual behaviour for Os and Pt, calling into question the versatility of d-band theory in bimetallic Os-alloys. The spin-orbit effect at the Os site has been found for both the Pd-Os and Pt-Os alloys, but it is about 4 times less compared to the complex salts. The obtained values for the complex compounds are comparable with those for the iridates, proposed as materials with spin-orbit-induced properties. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis of eight single crystals, the parameters of the hexagonal unit cell (space group P–31c, Z = 2) vary in the following intervals: a = 9.2332(3)–9.2566(6); c = 9.9512(12)–9.9753(7) Å with the Mo/W ratio changing from 0.513(3)/0.487(3) to 0.078(4)/0.895(9). The thermal decomposition of [NiEn3](MoO4)0.5(WO4)0.5 individual crystals obtained by co-crystallisation was performed in He and H2 atmospheres. The ex situ X-ray study of thermal decomposition products shows the formation of nanocrystalline refractory alloys and carbide composites containing ternary Ni–Mo–W phases. The formation of carbon–nitride phases at certain stages of heating up to 1000 °C were shown. We prepare the first example of a single-phase hexagonal high-entropy alloy. Heat treat- ment up to 1500 K and compression up to 45 GPa do not result in phase changes, a record temperature and pres- sure stability for a single-phase high-entropy alloy. The alloys show pronounced electrocatalytic activity in methanol oxidation, which opens a route for the use of high-entropy alloys as materials for sustainable energy conversion. Die Bauteilfestigkeit wird wesentlich durch das Materialgefüge bestimmt und kann über die Prüfung der Härte des Grundwerkstoffes lokal erfasst werden. Bei Bauteilverbindungen (z.B. Schweißnähte) ist zudem der Übergangsbereich zwischen den Fügeteilen von besonderem Interesse, bei Passungen oder Gleitlagern sind zudem geringe Rauheiten erforderlich, die oft durch mechanische Oberflächen-bearbeitung realisiert werden. Leichtbauweisen können sowohl über hochfeste Stahllegierungen bei geringem Materialeinsatz als auch über Aluminiumlegierungen realisiert werden. Für unterschied-liche Grundwerkstoffe (X2CrNiMo18-14-3, Co-Cr-W-Ni, AlSi10Mg, X5CrNi1810, ferritische Schweiß-nähte) werden an Quer- und Oberflächenschliffen Änderungen im Gefüge, morphologische Besonderheiten, Härteverläufe sowie Änderungen in den Rauheitskennwerten betrachtet, wie sie im Ergebnis mechanischer Oberflächenbearbeitung, bedingt durch den Herstellungsprozess, die Beanspruchung oder den Fügeprozess auftreten. Durch Vergleiche mit bereits vorliegenden Bildern werden qualitativ Bruchmechanismen ermittelt. Grundlage sind zumeist zweidimensionale Bilder aus licht- und elektronenoptischen Verfahren. Quantitative Aussagen beziehen sich bislang beispielsweise auf makroskopische Anteile von Bruchmechanismen oder die Ausmessung von Schwingstreifen. In jüngerer Zeit gibt es vermehrt Ansätze, Computer-Algorithmen einzusetzen, die in der Lage sind, unterschiedlich strukturierte Bruchmerkmale zu finden und zu klassifizieren. Im hier vorgestellten IGF-Vorhaben „iFrakto“, IGF Vorhaben Nr.: 21477 N, werden licht- und elektronen-optisch Topographie-Bilder erzeugt und die gewonnenen 3D-Informationen zusammen mit den klassischen 2D-Bildern ausgewertet. Analytische Algorithmen und Machine Learning werden eingesetzt, um Bruchmerkmale zu analysieren, zu bewerten und mit Informationen aus einer fraktographischen Datenbank zu verknüpfen. The in situ visualization of austenitization upon welding and subsequent α’-martensite formation during cooling could be achieved with a temporal resolution of 2 s for monochromatic imaging using a single neutron wavelength and of 0.5 s for polychromatic imaging using the full spectrum of the beam (white beam). The spatial resolution achieved in the experiments was approximately 200 µm. The transmitted monochromatic neutron beam intensity at a wavelength of λ = 0.395 nm was significantly reduced during cooling below the martensitic start temperature Ms since the emerging martensitic phase has a ~10% higher attenuation coefficient than the austenitic phase. Neutron imaging was significantly influenced by coherent neutron scattering caused by the thermal motion of the crystal lattice (Debye–Waller factor), resulting in a reduction in the neutron transmission by approx. 15% for monochromatic and by approx. 4% for polychromatic imaging. T1 - Effect of Elevated Temperatures on the Mechanical Properties of a Direct Laser Deposited Ti-6Al-4V N2 - In the present work, the mechanical properties of the DLD-processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy were obtained by tensile tests performed at different temperatures, ranging from 20 °C to 800 °C. Thereby, the process conditions were close to the conditions used to produce large-sized structures using the DLD method, resulting in specimens having the same initial martensitic microstructure. According to the obtained stress curves, the yield strength decreases gradually by 40% when the temperature is increased to 500 °C. Similar behavior is observed for the tensile strength. However, further heating above 500 °C leads to a significant increase in the softening rate. It was found that the DLD-processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy had a Young’s modulus with higher thermal stability than conventionally processed alloys. At 500 °C, the Young’s modulus of the DLD alloy was 46% higher than that of the wrought alloy. The influence of the thermal history on the stress relaxation for the cases where 500 °C and 700 °C were the maximum temperatures was studied. It was revealed that stress relaxation processes are decisive for the formation of residual stresses at temperatures above 700 °C, which is especially important for small-sized parts produced by the DLD method. The coefficient of thermal expansion was investigated up to 1050 °C. Especially the hot stamping process that is used as a resource efficient process for manufacturing geometrical complex and high-strength structures, exhibits severe wear and high friction during the forming operation. The laser implantation process addresses this problem by combining two different approaches (surface modification and surface structuring) in surface technology by creating elevated, highly wear-resistant micro-features to influence the tribological performance. Pure TiB2 implants have shown to reduce tool-sided wear significally and improve the part formability by reducing local necking in deep drawing tests. Within the scope of this work, TiB2-TiC and TiB2-TaC hard material mixtures are implanted on X38CrMoV5-3 hot work tool steel. The aim is to investigate how the implant material properties can be influenced by the application of different mixing ratios of hard material mixtures under the specific variation of the process parameters. Distinct implant formations are tested on a novel test apparatus to examine the influence on the tribological properties. From the analyses of the implant properties by hardness measurements, light microscopic images, EDX and XRD analyses process parameter ranges are identified to produce defect-free dome- and ring-shaped implants. The specific process parameters (pulse power, pulse duration, mixing ratio and coating thickness) can be used for the determination of the implant geometry (height, width and depth). The tribological tests exhibit improved friction and wear properties. Based on these results, a tribosystem manufactured by this additive surface treatment technology shows great potential to enhance the effectiveness of the hot stamping process. A framework for inspecting X-ray emission hazards during laser material processing has yet to be developed. One requirement for conducting radiation protection inspections is using a reference scenario, i.e., laser settings and process parameters that will lead to an almost constant and high level of X-ray emissions. To study the feasibility of setting up a reference scenario in practice, ambient dose rates and photon energies were measured using traceable measurement equipment in an industrial setting at SCHOTT AG. Ultrashort pulsed (USP) lasers with a maximum average power of 220 W provided the opportunity to measure X-ray emissions at laser peak intensities of up to 3.3 × 10^15 W/cm^2 at pulse durations of ~1 ps. The results indicate that increasing the laser peak intensity is insufficient to generate high dose rates. The investigations were affected by various constraints which prevented measuring high ambient dose rates. In this work, a list of issues which may be encountered when performing measurements at USP-laser machines in industrial settings is identified. T1 - Unraveling the Role of Structural Dynamism in Metal Organic Frameworks (MOF) for Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) Driven Water Sensing N2 - Ligand based modification has been performed to synthesize a pair of mixed ligands d10 MOF based materials related to a previously published compound as a base material. The previous compound was a Zn(II)-MOF, {[Zn(4-bpdh)(H2dht)](MeOH)(H2O)}n (1) [N,N′-bis(1-pyridin-4-yl-ethylidene)hydrazine = 4-bpdh and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid = H4dht], which is a five-fold interpenetrated framework and highly dynamic in nature. In the first synthetic modification, the central metal is replaced by Cd(II), which has the same framework formula as the base material, but this is a rigid compound and also there is no interpenetration in the framework. In the second modification, along with the metal center, the 4,4′- coordinating N,N′-donor ligand is replaced by an isomeric 3,3′-coordinating N,N′- donor linker. In this compound, the dynamism is regenerated. The dynamic nature can be realized by the extensive PXRD studies and characteristic “step-shaped” gas/solvent adsorption behavior for CO2, water, and ethanol. Furthermore, all these 3D MOFs show excited-state intramolecular proton transfer phenomena and water sensing properties in different organic solvents. Here excitingly, the ease of water sensing property is directly related to the dynamic behavior of the framework which has been studied thoroughly in terms of structural correlation.
